Welcome back to our study of the book of Galatians. 00:00:07.75\00:00:10.31 Before the break Mark, we were talking about this idea 00:00:10.35\00:00:12.87 drawn out by the apostle Paul in Galatians of the 00:00:12.91\00:00:15.99 two covenants, so we spent some time talking about the 00:00:16.03\00:00:19.18 old and new covenants. 00:00:19.21\00:00:20.55 We were in the book of Hebrews 8 where we discussed 00:00:20.59\00:00:24.24 the new covenant that was given to Israel. 00:00:24.28\00:00:27.89 Given to Israel, but given to all of us because we are 00:00:27.93\00:00:31.51 part of spiritual Israel. 00:00:31.54\00:00:32.81 As we look at that we recognized that the problem with 00:00:32.85\00:00:37.23 the old covenant was with the people. 00:00:37.26\00:00:39.61 The people have made promises that they weren't able to 00:00:39.65\00:00:42.77 keep, the problem was never with the agreement God had 00:00:42.81\00:00:45.42 given the law, because the law is at the heart of the 00:00:45.46\00:00:48.03 new covenant as well. 00:00:48.07\00:00:49.22 - that's right, it's interesting that some people say 00:00:49.25\00:00:51.12 the mistake was that those people said all that the 00:00:51.15\00:00:52.95 Lord spoken we will do, they should have never said that. 00:00:52.99\00:00:55.30 That was the problem! That is not what we find. 00:00:55.33\00:00:57.70 The problem was they said that and stayed apart from God. 00:00:57.74\00:01:01.64 We will look at that more in just a moment. 00:01:01.68\00:01:03.49 What I would like to do briefly to bring us into our 00:01:03.53\00:01:06.85 next section is to look back to Deuteronomy 5 to show 00:01:06.88\00:01:10.72 God's intent was never what the children of Israel were 00:01:10.76\00:01:14.56 doing in the old covenant. 00:01:14.60\00:01:16.70 Let's go to Deuteronomy 5:28 where Moses is recounting 00:01:16.74\00:01:21.18 this experience the children of Israel went through. 00:01:21.21\00:01:25.58 Beginning with the Ten Command- ments and the old covenant. 00:01:25.62\00:01:29.19 It says, "then the Lord heard the voice of your words 00:01:29.23\00:01:32.01 "when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me; I have 00:01:32.05\00:01:34.60 "heard the voice of the words of this people which they 00:01:34.63\00:01:37.40 "have spoken to you. " And they said all that the Lord 00:01:37.44\00:01:39.69 has said we will do. And this is what he says about it. 00:01:39.72\00:01:41.94 - he says it right before in verse 27. - right. 00:01:41.97\00:01:44.20 Oh yes, that's right, we didn't read that part. 00:01:44.24\00:01:46.97 "27. You go near and hear all that the Lord our God 00:01:47.00\00:01:50.15 "many say, and tell us all that the Lord our God says 00:01:50.18\00:01:53.29 "to you, and we will hear and do it. " 00:01:53.33\00:01:54.72 So Lord heard all of that and it says in the middle of 00:01:54.75\00:01:58.20 verse 28, "they are right in all that they have spoken. " 00:01:58.23\00:02:02.09 Then he says in verse 29 and this is the key "oh, that 00:02:02.12\00:02:05.93 "they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me 00:02:05.97\00:02:09.15 "and always keep all My commandments, that it might be 00:02:09.19\00:02:11.98 "well with them and with their children for ever!" 00:02:12.01\00:02:14.74 God wanted to bless them, He wanted to give that to them. 00:02:14.77\00:02:18.10 He knew that they didn't have the heart in them to do 00:02:18.13\00:02:21.43 what they were promising to do. 00:02:21.46\00:02:22.69 Only if they came close to Him and found the Spirit of God 00:02:22.72\00:02:25.51 to enter into their experience could they have that heart. 00:02:25.54\00:02:28.30 That is absolutely true so we are coming back to 00:02:28.33\00:02:31.42 Galatians 4:22, and again we read this before and we are 00:02:31.46\00:02:35.54 reviewing it, "for it is written that Abraham had two 00:02:35.57\00:02:39.92 "sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a free woman. 00:02:39.95\00:02:44.27 "But he who was up a bondwoman" that was Ishmael, 00:02:44.30\00:02:47.46 "was born according to the flesh. " Remember the devising, 00:02:47.49\00:02:50.50 the plan of Abraham and Hagar and Sarah? 00:02:50.53\00:02:53.00 They work together, even though God had promised that 00:02:53.04\00:02:55.72 Abraham would have a child and intended for Sarah to 00:02:55.75\00:02:58.40 be the mother of that child. 00:02:58.44\00:02:59.67 They thought maybe God wants us to work it out and they made 00:02:59.70\00:03:01.99 their own plan instead of submitting to God's plan. 00:03:02.02\00:03:04.71 So it was of the flesh, it was their own plan. 00:03:04.75\00:03:07.76 It says, that child Ishmael "was born according to the 00:03:07.80\00:03:11.03 "flesh, and he of the free woman through the promise, which 00:03:11.07\00:03:14.06 "things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: 00:03:14.09\00:03:16.94 "the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, 00:03:16.98\00:03:20.37 "which is Hagar - for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, 00:03:20.40\00:03:23.76 "and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, 00:03:23.79\00:03:26.72 "and is in bondage with her children. " 00:03:26.75\00:03:29.15 Now that is a powerful statement right there and it is 00:03:29.18\00:03:31.22 offensive in fact to a lot of people. 00:03:31.25\00:03:33.16 Paul stated in his day the same goes today that 00:03:33.19\00:03:36.30 the nation of Israel is not equated to the new covenant, 00:03:36.33\00:03:40.18 the old covenant to bondage and not salvation 00:03:40.21\00:03:43.92 agreement or covenant at this point with God. 00:03:43.95\00:03:47.58 Then it says, "26. But the Jerusalem above is free, 00:03:47.62\00:03:52.78 "which is the mother of us all. For it is written: 00:03:52.81\00:03:56.53 "rejoice, old barren, You who do not bear! Break forth 00:03:56.56\00:03:59.56 "and shout, You who are not in labor! For the desolate 00:03:59.60\00:04:02.41 "has many more children than she who has a husband. " 00:04:02.45\00:04:05.29 So the whole idea we are getting here is there are these 00:04:05.32\00:04:08.22 two covenants and he equates them to these experiences. 00:04:08.25\00:04:12.02 You have Hagar the slave girl of Abraham who has a son 00:04:12.05\00:04:15.78 Ishmael and those correspond to the old 00:04:15.82\00:04:20.28 covenant given at Sinai. 00:04:20.32\00:04:22.12 You have Sarah who was promised the child Isaac in an 00:04:22.16\00:04:26.36 impossible situation where they had to put faith 00:04:26.40\00:04:29.81 in the promises of God. 00:04:29.84\00:04:31.23 Isaac's birth equates to a new covenant and the Jerusalem 00:04:31.26\00:04:37.98 above which is the mother of us all. 00:04:38.02\00:04:39.73 That's right, and you can see here the apostle Paul is 00:04:39.77\00:04:42.46 simply using another illustra- tion to draw out the same 00:04:42.49\00:04:45.14 truths he has been doing. 00:04:45.18\00:04:46.62 He talked about the slave verses the son, and now he's 00:04:46.65\00:04:49.81 talking about these two covenants. 00:04:49.85\00:04:51.62 They are touching on the same issue of the flesh 00:04:51.66\00:04:53.86 and the spirit and we will talk more about that 00:04:53.89\00:04:56.05 in a future episode. 00:04:56.09\00:04:57.57 Right now we will touch on a for a moment, this idea 00:04:57.61\00:05:00.65 that Ishmael was born of the flesh. 00:05:00.68\00:05:03.63 This is symbolically talking about the fact that we 00:05:03.66\00:05:07.61 cannot of the flesh, without being born again, without 00:05:07.65\00:05:12.04 union with Christ, we cannot produce anything good. 00:05:12.07\00:05:16.40 Even what we do outwardly that is good has wrong motives. 00:05:16.43\00:05:20.03 So many people think that they are a good person and 00:05:20.06\00:05:23.42 that is the natural thought some of them but the reality 00:05:23.45\00:05:26.78 is that the motives give us away. 00:05:26.81\00:05:29.18 It makes me think of the words of Jesus to Nicodemus, 00:05:29.22\00:05:32.15 that which is born of flesh is flesh, that which is born 00:05:32.19\00:05:34.82 of Spirit is spirit, the spirit can't produce the flesh, 00:05:34.86\00:05:37.46 the flesh can't produce the Spirit. 00:05:37.49\00:05:39.22 In Isaiah 64:6 I think it where it says, all our 00:05:39.25\00:05:42.98 righteousness's are as filthy rags. 00:05:43.01\00:05:45.93 The best we can do, even when we are doing our very best 00:05:45.97\00:05:50.41 without that changed heart of humility, love and that 00:05:50.45\00:05:54.48 which is unselfish, the best we can do is filthy rags. 00:05:54.51\00:05:58.59 So this idea of the old covenant that is described here, 00:05:58.62\00:06:02.92 is related to this Sinai experience where they made an 00:06:02.96\00:06:07.22 attempt to fulfill God's requirements without 00:06:07.26\00:06:10.53 union with Christ, which is totally futile. 00:06:10.56\00:06:13.76 Jesus makes this point in John 15 and I thought we should 00:06:13.79\00:06:16.48 look at that briefly. 00:06:16.52\00:06:17.97 John 15:5 Jesus was speaking to His disciples and He said, 00:06:18.01\00:06:24.26 "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me 00:06:24.29\00:06:29.91 "and I in him, bears much fruit for without Me you can do 00:06:29.94\00:06:34.24 nothing. " So He is the vine and the only way for us to 00:06:34.27\00:06:38.75 have anything truly good produced out of us, is to have 00:06:38.79\00:06:43.23 an intimate union. 00:06:43.27\00:06:44.70 You think about a vine and branches they are connected. 00:06:44.74\00:06:46.54 The life of one flows into the other. 00:06:46.58\00:06:49.24 More than that though, the life of the branch doesn't flow 00:06:49.28\00:06:51.87 into the vine, it's a vine that gives life to the branch 00:06:51.90\00:06:54.46 or the branch can't exist. 00:06:54.49\00:06:55.70 That was his point, if you are not connected with Me, 00:06:55.74\00:06:58.62 you can do how much? - nothing - absolutely. 00:06:58.65\00:07:01.38 Absolutely nothing. So here we have this picture of the 00:07:01.42\00:07:04.51 old covenant where it is a futile attempt to fulfill 00:07:04.54\00:07:07.57 God's requirements when we are not connected to Christ. 00:07:07.60\00:07:11.18 There's lots of people who go to church, they live a good 00:07:11.22\00:07:14.76 moral life, they don't have devotional time. 00:07:14.80\00:07:17.89 They don't spend time in prayer and pleading for purity 00:07:17.93\00:07:21.07 oh their soul, they don't spend time reading the word 00:07:21.10\00:07:23.86 and allowing the Lord Jesus to speak to their heart and 00:07:23.90\00:07:26.67 point out those rough spots drawing them into union 00:07:26.71\00:07:29.45 with Him, it's a futile attempt. 00:07:29.48\00:07:32.39 They may be going through the motions, others may look 00:07:32.43\00:07:35.17 at them as sincere Christians, but the reality is that 00:07:35.21\00:07:38.35 lack of vital life force from Christ is causing them 00:07:38.38\00:07:41.48 to only have filthy rags. 00:07:41.52\00:07:43.31 Jim the reality is, I've been there, you've been there, 00:07:43.35\00:07:45.48 you used to think you are good person and I thought I 00:07:45.52\00:07:47.62 was a good person before I came to Christ. 00:07:47.66\00:07:49.09 The reality is our standard of righteousness is very 00:07:49.12\00:07:52.98 low and we may put on our act, and we may think we are 00:07:53.01\00:07:56.87 good people, but the fact is we have issues that God 00:07:56.90\00:07:59.89 allows to come into our lives to test our character 00:07:59.93\00:08:02.85 and to prove us and show that we are not made up to what 00:08:02.89\00:08:06.69 we would be. 00:08:06.73\00:08:08.16 We may have something happen we just blow up and lose 00:08:08.20\00:08:10.35 our temper and say things we regret and then we say, 00:08:10.38\00:08:12.51 I don't know what happened I'm usually a pretty patient 00:08:12.54\00:08:15.04 person, but the fact is and what is being revealed is 00:08:15.08\00:08:17.54 my heart is corrupt. 00:08:17.57\00:08:18.98 You know when you think about it this happens often times 00:08:19.01\00:08:23.49 from a sense of self-confidence. 00:08:23.53\00:08:25.49 We begin to do what's right and making good choices and we 00:08:25.53\00:08:29.57 are close to Christ and then we leave off spending time 00:08:29.60\00:08:33.42 with Him and gradually, I've had it happen in my own 00:08:33.46\00:08:37.21 experience, those old traits of character, that flesh starts 00:08:37.25\00:08:41.19 to come out and I start acting out what I use to act 00:08:41.23\00:08:45.17 out, but I had since moved past because I did not have 00:08:45.20\00:08:49.10 that union with Christ. 00:08:49.14\00:08:50.66 So that is the vital principle that is 00:08:50.70\00:08:52.56 being spoken of here. 00:08:52.60\00:08:53.67 Well let's look further in Galatians Chapter 4:28 00:08:53.70\00:08:57.53 for a moment, it says, "now we, brethren, as Isaac was," 00:08:57.56\00:09:01.58 "are children of promise. But, as he who was born 00:09:01.62\00:09:05.37 "according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born 00:09:05.40\00:09:07.88 "according to the Spirit, even so it is now. " 00:09:07.92\00:09:10.32 I mean if you look at the different examples in the Bible, 00:09:10.36\00:09:13.24 you will find, take Jesus and the Pharisees. 00:09:13.28\00:09:16.27 Jesus was born of the Spirit and the Pharisees persecuted 00:09:16.31\00:09:21.35 Him, they couldn't stand how principled and loving 00:09:21.38\00:09:24.72 Jesus was. - He exposed their iniquity. - exactly! 00:09:24.76\00:09:28.88 If they couldn't stop Him from teaching they had to 00:09:28.92\00:09:32.40 ultimately crucified Him, or urge for His crucifixion. 00:09:32.44\00:09:35.25 They had to get rid of him so that conviction would be 00:09:35.28\00:09:37.75 removed, the same thing happened from a story we mentioned 00:09:37.78\00:09:40.21 in a previous episode of Cain and Abel. 00:09:40.25\00:09:42.13 Abel was just doing what was right, but just being around 00:09:42.17\00:09:46.23 that bothered Cain and he persecuted him because it was 00:09:46.26\00:09:50.29 pointing out his lack, his weakness. 00:09:50.32\00:09:53.01 You may find that sometimes and I know my own experience 00:09:53.05\00:09:55.87 that sometimes you come in the presence of someone who is 00:09:55.91\00:09:58.70 not a Christian and they feel a little awkward. 00:09:58.73\00:10:01.63 You are not trying to do anything to bring any 00:10:01.67\00:10:04.50 condemnation but there is a sense of awkwardness they feel 00:10:04.53\00:10:08.33 and maybe a little bit of envy and what have you because they 00:10:08.37\00:10:12.14 know that they are not exactly where the Lord wants them 00:10:12.17\00:10:14.55 to be, that conviction is being given to them so they 00:10:14.59\00:10:16.94 might turn to Lord. 00:10:16.97\00:10:18.15 They tell themselves they are good people all the time 00:10:18.18\00:10:20.98 until they come into contact with somebody who is good, 00:10:21.02\00:10:23.78 not because of their goodness, but they have been 00:10:23.81\00:10:26.22 transformed by Christ and it is evident. 00:10:26.26\00:10:28.17 - Yeah, that is right, it's exactly right. 00:10:28.21\00:10:30.06 What we want to go ahead into verse, you asked me Jim 00:10:30.09\00:10:33.24 about this and it really hits me to continue on is 00:10:33.28\00:10:36.50 in verse 30 where he says, "nevertheless what does the 00:10:36.54\00:10:39.77 "Scripture say? Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for 00:10:39.80\00:10:42.62 "the son of the bondwoman shall not be in heir with the 00:10:42.66\00:10:45.44 "son of the free woman. " 00:10:45.48\00:10:46.56 The whole idea is that just as Hagar gave birth to a slave 00:10:46.59\00:10:49.00 child, she couldn't give birth to anything else because 00:10:49.03\00:10:51.40 she was a slave. 00:10:51.44\00:10:52.55 So the flesh gives birth to fleshly reasoning. 00:10:52.59\00:10:56.63 What the Bible is saying here is the flesh can't have part 00:10:56.66\00:11:01.81 in the salvation experience, flesh has to be removed. 00:11:01.85\00:11:04.79 So the bondwoman is like flesh, the son has all the 00:11:04.83\00:11:07.73 devisings of the flesh, all those human excuses we make. 00:11:07.77\00:11:11.46 For example, I think of the types of things that people do 00:11:11.49\00:11:14.80 when for example the Scripture calls upon them to forgive 00:11:14.84\00:11:18.38 somebody and they say, I know I should forgive them, but 00:11:18.42\00:11:21.92 you don't know what they have done to me. 00:11:21.96\00:11:24.32 Or somebody marrying outside of the faith, I know 00:11:24.36\00:11:28.31 I shouldn't marry outside the faith, I know that is what 00:11:28.34\00:11:31.11 God says, what the Bible teaches, but the person really 00:11:31.14\00:11:33.44 seems interested and they might be willing to study. 00:11:33.47\00:11:36.49 We make excuses, even though God is clear about what 00:11:36.53\00:11:40.62 His will is, we choose to do it in our own way and yet 00:11:40.66\00:11:44.72 still profess to be following Him. 00:11:44.75\00:11:46.32 We put our reasoning above His reasoning. 00:11:46.36\00:11:49.07 So Lord is saying cast out the bondwoman, cast out 00:11:49.11\00:11:52.28 those reasoning's, those excuses we so often give. 00:11:52.31\00:11:55.43 I want to go back and close with this passage here in 00:11:55.47\00:11:58.55 verse 27, or 26 and 27 because this is powerful. 00:11:58.59\00:12:01.81 The apostle Paul says, "but the Jerusalem above is free, 00:12:01.84\00:12:05.56 "which is the mother of us all. For it is written: 00:12:05.60\00:12:08.51 "rejoice, O barren, you who do not bear! Break forth 00:12:08.54\00:12:11.26 "and shout, you are not in labor! For the desolate," 00:12:11.30\00:12:13.98 speaking of Sarah, "has many more children than 00:12:14.01\00:12:17.61 "she who has a husband. " 00:12:17.65\00:12:19.45 - that's right and he is quoting actually right from 00:12:19.49\00:12:22.03 Isaiah 54 where are he says, "Sing O barren you who have 00:12:22.06\00:12:25.49 not borne" like Sarah she was barren, 00:12:25.52\00:12:28.44 "break forth with singing and cry aloud 00:12:28.47\00:12:31.32 "you who have not labored with child! For more are the 00:12:31.35\00:12:33.02 "children of the desolate than the children of the 00:12:33.06\00:12:34.85 "married woman, says the Lord. Enlarge the place of 00:12:34.89\00:12:36.79 "your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of 00:12:36.82\00:12:38.96 "your dwellings; do not spare: lengthen your cords, and 00:12:39.00\00:12:41.20 "strengthen your stakes. " We are expanding the house here 00:12:41.24\00:12:43.42 "For you shall expand to the right and to the left, and 00:12:43.45\00:12:46.62 "your descendents will inherit the nations, and make the 00:12:46.66\00:12:49.79 "desolate cities inhabited. " 00:12:49.83\00:12:51.48 So Sarah, by giving birth to Isaac, she was desolate but 00:12:51.51\00:12:54.99 been through God's promise Isaac was born and through 00:12:55.02\00:12:59.29 Isaacs line Christ came and through all these not only 00:12:59.32\00:13:03.20 Jews but Gentiles who believed in Christ so it's in time 00:13:03.24\00:13:06.47 to enlarge the tent because all are welcome into the 00:13:06.51\00:13:09.71 family of God. 00:13:09.74\00:13:10.95 This is a powerful truth and we just hope that you too 00:13:10.98\00:13:13.46 will be willing to accept Christ and enter into 00:13:13.50\00:13:16.31 the family of God. 00:13:16.34\00:13:17.75
