Welcome to Books of the Book, I'm Pastor Mark Howard and 00:00:22.31\00:00:25.05 the director of the Emmanuel Institute of Evangelism for 00:00:25.09\00:00:27.68 Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventist a training 00:00:27.71\00:00:30.27 school to train people how to share their faith, 00:00:30.31\00:00:33.03 as well as the Pastor of the Gobels Seventh-day Adventist 00:00:33.06\00:00:35.49 church in Gobels Michigan. 00:00:35.53\00:00:37.19 I'm here with my co-host, my brother Jim. 00:00:37.23\00:00:39.75 Yes my name is Jim Howard and I am also a Pastor in 00:00:39.79\00:00:42.88 Michigan Conference of the Detroit Metropolitan and South 00:00:42.92\00:00:46.07 Lyon Seventh-day Adventist church and I'm excited to 00:00:46.10\00:00:48.72 study the book of Galatians with you today. 00:00:48.75\00:00:50.48 Today we are, as Jim has mentioned, we have been studying 00:00:50.51\00:00:55.10 the book of Galatians. 00:00:55.13\00:00:56.39 In our last study together we were talking about the Seed 00:00:56.42\00:01:01.52 of Abraham and what it means to understand and receive 00:01:01.55\00:01:05.61 the Seed of Abraham, actually to become sons of God. 00:01:05.64\00:01:09.66 That was the point that Paul was getting to. 00:01:09.70\00:01:13.24 We are going to pick up on that today. 00:01:13.28\00:01:15.72 I want to tell you today of all the topics Jim in the 00:01:15.76\00:01:20.02 book of Galatians, this is one of the most precious as it 00:01:20.06\00:01:24.28 really brings out the heart of our own spiritual 00:01:24.32\00:01:28.27 experience and the affection of not only God, 00:01:28.30\00:01:32.22 for us but us for God. 00:01:32.26\00:01:33.83 We're talking about being slaves or sons today. 00:01:33.86\00:01:37.91 So what we are going to do is begin in Chapter 4, 00:01:37.95\00:01:41.75 but we are going to recap in Chapter 3 of Galatians. 00:01:41.79\00:01:44.61 If you have your Bibles with you I would encourage you 00:01:44.64\00:01:47.43 to turn with us, we are in the book of Galatians. 00:01:47.47\00:01:49.61 You go to the New Testament Scriptures Matthew, Mark, 00:01:49.64\00:01:51.75 Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 00:01:51.79\00:01:53.36 1 and 2 Corinthians and then the book of Galatians. 00:01:53.40\00:01:57.13 In Galatians were going to Chapter 3:26 and the apostle 00:01:57.16\00:02:02.17 writes, "for you are all sons of God through faith in 00:02:02.21\00:02:06.78 "Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized 00:02:06.81\00:02:10.82 "into Christ have put on Christ. And there is neither 00:02:10.85\00:02:14.83 "Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, 00:02:14.86\00:02:17.69 "there is neither male nor female; for you are all 00:02:17.73\00:02:21.35 "one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then 00:02:21.39\00:02:24.98 "you are Abraham's seed, 00:02:25.02\00:02:26.77 "and heirs according to the promise. " 00:02:26.80\00:02:28.93 The idea here is Paul talking about how we can become 00:02:28.96\00:02:32.86 sons of God through faith in Jesus. 00:02:32.89\00:02:36.09 There is a lot to the sons of God that can really 00:02:36.12\00:02:39.63 make a world of difference, the world of difference, 00:02:39.67\00:02:42.56 in our own spiritual experience and I think that is 00:02:42.59\00:02:45.45 where we are going to go here. 00:02:45.49\00:02:46.77 Yes that is exactly right. 00:02:46.81\00:02:48.03 Right after this passage, and the news and we need 00:02:48.06\00:02:50.63 to review this is because after the end of chapter 3 00:02:50.67\00:02:53.11 the apostle uses an illustration to talk about 00:02:53.15\00:02:56.25 the importance of being sons. 00:02:56.29\00:02:58.09 So what we are wanting to do is to keep reading. 00:02:58.13\00:03:01.04 Let's read verses 1-7 together and that will be the 00:03:01.08\00:03:03.95 framework from which we will study today. 00:03:03.99\00:03:06.23 Verse one says, "Now I say that the heir, as long 00:03:06.26\00:03:10.26 "as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, 00:03:10.29\00:03:13.15 "though he is master of all, but he is under 00:03:13.19\00:03:16.14 "guardians and stewards until the time appointed 00:03:16.17\00:03:19.28 "by the father. Even so we, when we were children, 00:03:19.31\00:03:22.27 "were in bondage under the elements of the world. 00:03:22.31\00:03:25.49 "But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent 00:03:25.52\00:03:28.80 "forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 00:03:28.84\00:03:32.01 "to redeem those who were under the law, that we might 00:03:32.04\00:03:35.48 "receive the adoption as sons. And because you are 00:03:35.52\00:03:39.05 "sons, God has set forth the Spirit of His Son into 00:03:39.09\00:03:43.24 "your hearts, crying out, 'Abba Father!' Therefore you 00:03:43.27\00:03:47.60 "are no longer slave but a son, and if a son, then an 00:03:47.64\00:03:51.93 "heir of God through Christ. " 00:03:51.97\00:03:54.18 Now this is a powerful passage of Scripture and he is 00:03:54.22\00:03:57.82 contrasting hear Mark, the idea of a slave with a son. 00:03:57.85\00:04:00.67 He is trying to tell the Galatians you want to be sons, 00:04:00.71\00:04:03.49 and it is not just a suggestion. 00:04:03.53\00:04:06.46 That is something we will draw how right from the start. 00:04:06.49\00:04:08.86 If you look at that last verse 7, it says, 00:04:08.89\00:04:12.07 "therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a 00:04:12.11\00:04:15.92 "son, then an heir of God through Christ. " 00:04:15.96\00:04:19.32 This seems to be a tradition of being an heir of God 00:04:19.35\00:04:23.23 through Christ. - that's right! 00:04:23.26\00:04:25.05 If we are a slave you are not an heir. 00:04:25.09\00:04:28.98 The only way to become an heir is to be a son so this 00:04:29.02\00:04:33.12 is very critical to understand. 00:04:33.16\00:04:34.53 What is the difference between being a slave and being 00:04:34.56\00:04:36.55 a son? And how is it that we can be a son? 00:04:36.58\00:04:39.83 One aspect of this I just think about how 00:04:39.86\00:04:43.04 meaningful it is, it touches my heart to think about the 00:04:43.07\00:04:47.27 fact that Jesus, when referring to God said we should 00:04:47.30\00:04:51.47 pray our Father who art in heaven. 00:04:51.50\00:04:54.69 I mean when you think about other religions, world 00:04:54.73\00:04:59.13 religions and their deities, you don't see the same 00:04:59.17\00:05:03.50 bond of affection that God is asking us to call Me Father. 00:05:03.54\00:05:07.99 Call Me Father, it denotes that there is more than just a 00:05:08.02\00:05:12.43 servile relationship here, it denotes there is an 00:05:12.47\00:05:15.82 affection here, there is a bond, a union and God is 00:05:15.85\00:05:18.84 calling us to that union in this passage of Galatians. 00:05:18.87\00:05:22.17 Absolutely, we are going to unpack this, these 7 verses 00:05:22.20\00:05:25.46 are so full of instruction. 00:05:25.50\00:05:28.07 I want to go back to verse 1 and look at the first few 00:05:28.11\00:05:31.63 verses here, Paul is making a point of what happens 00:05:31.67\00:05:35.12 in the growth of the Christian so let's start in verse 1 00:05:35.15\00:05:37.62 and then I'll comment. 00:05:37.66\00:05:39.36 " Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, 00:05:39.39\00:05:42.56 "does not differ at all from a slave, 00:05:42.59\00:05:44.91 "though he is master of all 00:05:44.94\00:05:46.63 "though he is master of all," so here you have a son, 00:05:46.66\00:05:48.83 but he is in the same relation as a servant would be. 00:05:48.86\00:05:51.37 Paul is going to talk about what that means as we go 00:05:51.41\00:05:54.39 to verse 2 where he says, "does not differ at all from 00:05:54.43\00:05:57.04 "a slave, even though he is master of all," because he is 00:05:57.08\00:06:00.16 heir of what his father owns, "but he is under guardians 00:06:00.19\00:06:03.82 "and stewards until the time appointed by the father. " 00:06:03.86\00:06:08.57 And then he says in verse 3, "Even so we, 00:06:08.60\00:06:13.23 so he compares us, our experience from slave to son. 00:06:13.27\00:06:17.89 He compares us to this child who is under guardians and 00:06:17.92\00:06:21.72 stewards and says, "Even so we, when we were children, 00:06:21.75\00:06:25.65 "were in bondage under the elements of the world. " 00:06:25.69\00:06:29.55 - what's that talking about? 00:06:29.59\00:06:31.01 And these elements of the world, it's beneficial to 00:06:31.05\00:06:34.37 us as the apostle Paul uses the exact same language 00:06:34.41\00:06:38.14 in the book of Colossians so if we go forward past 00:06:38.18\00:06:41.41 the book of Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians and 00:06:41.45\00:06:46.71 Colossians 2:20 we are going to see a similar 00:06:46.74\00:06:50.63 illustration that will help us to grasp what he 00:06:50.66\00:06:54.51 is pointing out. 00:06:54.54\00:06:56.24 Colossians 2:20, notice what Paul says here. 00:06:56.28\00:06:59.52 "Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic 00:06:59.55\00:07:03.61 "principles of the world," now I know in Galatians it said 00:07:03.65\00:07:07.01 elements, but in the Greek language these are the exact 00:07:07.05\00:07:10.38 same terms that are a being used here. 00:07:10.42\00:07:12.85 Some Bibles will even say rudiments. 00:07:12.89\00:07:15.26 A rudiment in the Greek are talking about the very basic 00:07:15.29\00:07:18.69 building blocks of learning, your ABCs if you will. 00:07:18.72\00:07:22.29 So basic principles of the world he says. 00:07:22.33\00:07:27.69 Let's start in verse 20 again, "therefore, if you died 00:07:27.73\00:07:30.58 "with Christ from the basic principles of the world, 00:07:30.61\00:07:33.15 "why, as though living in the world, do you subject 00:07:33.18\00:07:35.65 "yourselves to regulations - Do not touch, do not taste, 00:07:35.69\00:07:39.63 "do not handle, which all concerns things which perish 00:07:39.66\00:07:43.57 "with the using-according to the Commandments and 00:07:43.60\00:07:46.30 "the doctrines of men?" 00:07:46.34\00:07:48.11 Now you know Paul is talking about how when we are 00:07:48.15\00:07:51.01 children in Galatians and were under these elements of 00:07:51.04\00:07:53.87 the world until the time appointed by the Father. 00:07:53.90\00:07:56.77 What some people have done unfortunately, not grasping 00:07:56.81\00:07:59.90 what he is trying to say is that they have read into 00:07:59.94\00:08:02.77 this and said all oh yeah, do not taste or touch but what Paul 00:08:02.81\00:08:05.46 is saying that when you come to Christ you shouldn't 00:08:05.49\00:08:08.57 have any regulations, you don't need to obey God's 00:08:08.61\00:08:12.13 commands anymore, you are led by the Spirit as if the 00:08:12.17\00:08:15.66 two would be conflicting or contrary. 00:08:15.69\00:08:17.80 What he is trying to say, let's take a practical example. 00:08:17.83\00:08:20.89 I have children Jim, you have two children and I have two 00:08:20.93\00:08:24.81 children and when our children, you viewers at home, some 00:08:24.85\00:08:27.92 of you have children, or you are children and what a child 00:08:27.96\00:08:30.94 is under his parents, but parent as that child is growing 00:08:30.98\00:08:33.93 up makes certain regulations. 00:08:33.97\00:08:35.60 Do not taste, do not touch, right? Don't touch that! 00:08:35.63\00:08:39.61 Don't eat that! Right? The basic elements when you are 00:08:39.64\00:08:42.94 growing up you have certain restrictions and regulations. 00:08:42.98\00:08:45.91 For example, this one is probably fairly common for a 00:08:45.94\00:08:48.90 parent is I don't want you playing out in busy traffic. 00:08:48.94\00:08:52.63 That is pretty easy and a no-brainer to a parent, however; 00:08:52.67\00:08:56.33 I know with my children and maybe with your children, 00:08:56.36\00:08:57.74 sometimes the children say, but why? 00:08:57.77\00:09:00.55 Why can't I go out and play in the road? 00:09:00.59\00:09:02.87 They don't understand what I understand. 00:09:02.91\00:09:05.12 They don't understand the danger we as parents understand. 00:09:05.16\00:09:07.57 So we make these restrictions and regulations. 00:09:07.61\00:09:11.38 Now here's the question, is that for the purpose of my 00:09:11.42\00:09:15.98 regulation don't play in the traffic, but why my child 00:09:16.02\00:09:20.71 becomes of age, my son turns 18 I can say hey content 00:09:20.75\00:09:25.40 yourself, play in busy traffic all you want. 00:09:25.44\00:09:26.99 Go get hit by a car for all I care. 00:09:27.02\00:09:28.74 Is that the idea? No! The reality is what I am hoping 00:09:28.77\00:09:32.82 for is that those basic principles that I lay out as a 00:09:32.85\00:09:37.83 parent will become a part of his reasoning process so when 00:09:37.87\00:09:42.05 the child matures, instead of having to be told what to 00:09:42.09\00:09:45.91 do all the time, it will be in his heart what to do. 00:09:45.95\00:09:49.38 And this is what the Bible is trying to express here 00:09:49.42\00:09:52.82 with these basic elements of the world. 00:09:52.85\00:09:55.50 One other thing I want to see there and Colossians 2 00:09:55.54\00:09:58.68 he says in verse 21 again, " Do not touch, do not taste, 00:09:58.71\00:10:01.25 "do not handle, which all concerns things which perish 00:10:01.29\00:10:03.79 "with the using-according to the Commandments 00:10:03.83\00:10:05.94 and "doctrines of men?" 00:10:05.98\00:10:07.44 And then in verse 23 he says, "these things indeed have 00:10:07.47\00:10:11.05 "an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false 00:10:11.09\00:10:14.64 "humility, and neglect of the body," 00:10:14.67\00:10:17.74 Now he is talking about those things in the spiritual life 00:10:17.78\00:10:21.19 having using certain outward and regulations. 00:10:21.22\00:10:25.02 It is not outward religion and we will talk about that. 00:10:25.05\00:10:26.71 Outward religion is part of inward religion, 00:10:26.75\00:10:28.71 but there are those who can have outward religion 00:10:28.75\00:10:30.77 with no inward religion. 00:10:30.81\00:10:32.20 And here he says, they have an appearance of wisdom, 00:10:32.23\00:10:37.10 but he says, "but are of no value against the 00:10:37.14\00:10:41.87 "indulgence of the flesh. " 00:10:41.90\00:10:43.71 So here Paul is saying, I don't have an issue with outward 00:10:43.74\00:10:46.68 regulations, but problem is that your outward regulations 00:10:46.71\00:10:49.62 are not addressing the real issue. 00:10:49.65\00:10:51.77 That is your heart is uncir- cumcised and you are carnal. 00:10:51.80\00:10:54.36 That's right, you can't just do things because someone is 00:10:54.40\00:10:57.26 telling you to do them, you are going to have to embody 00:10:57.30\00:10:59.84 it yourself. - that's right and we have seen it and I 00:10:59.88\00:11:02.42 have done it, I'm a child who my parents try to raise 00:11:02.46\00:11:04.97 right, and what happened I grew up. 00:11:05.00\00:11:07.91 I had those principles growing up, but what did I do when 00:11:07.95\00:11:10.76 I got older? I said I don't think it's important that I 00:11:10.79\00:11:13.56 do those things and it wasn't in my heart to do them. 00:11:13.60\00:11:16.33 I went against what my parents had taught me to do. 00:11:16.37\00:11:19.03 Exactly, exactly and you know. - and that's what's going 00:11:19.07\00:11:22.07 to happen when it's not in your heart. 00:11:22.11\00:11:23.08 Umm Hmmm and back in Galatians 4 there is another passage 00:11:23.09\00:11:26.28 that touches on this idea of the elements of the world. 00:11:26.32\00:11:29.48 I thought maybe we can look at that too. 00:11:29.51\00:11:30.94 Galatians 4:8 it says, "but then, indeed, when you did 00:11:30.98\00:11:36.31 "not know God," so he is talking to these Gentiles 00:11:36.34\00:11:41.61 believers, there was a time when they didn't know God and 00:11:41.64\00:11:44.43 "served those which by nature are not gods. " 00:11:44.47\00:11:46.71 They were into idolatry, pagan religion. 00:11:46.75\00:11:48.92 vs. 9. "But now after you have known God, or rather are known 00:11:48.95\00:11:52.58 "by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and 00:11:52.62\00:11:55.50 "beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in 00:11:55.54\00:11:58.56 "bondage? You observe days and months and seasons and 00:11:58.59\00:12:01.58 "years. I am afraid for you, 00:12:01.61\00:12:03.60 "lest I have labored for you in vain. " 00:12:03.63\00:12:06.08 Now to think about this idea of serving other gods, these 00:12:06.11\00:12:11.55 Gentile believers at one time believed in gods that were 00:12:11.58\00:12:18.12 idols of wood and stone and planets or whatever else. 00:12:18.16\00:12:24.15 The Sun, so when they thought about serving God it was 00:12:24.19\00:12:30.15 all from a servile relationship. 00:12:30.19\00:12:32.84 They had a fear over war relationship with God. 00:12:32.88\00:12:36.42 They did things out of fear, or they do things only for 00:12:36.46\00:12:38.97 the reward that will come from serving. 00:12:39.01\00:12:41.17 So what they did and everything they did as a way of 00:12:41.21\00:12:43.48 appeasing god, nothing in the heart, no affection for their 00:12:43.52\00:12:49.22 god they just had to do with their god had to say, 00:12:49.25\00:12:51.50 or what their god told them to do. 00:12:51.54\00:12:55.29 So what he is saying here is do you want to go back to 00:12:55.32\00:12:58.29 that? Do you want to go back to a servile relationship. 00:12:58.33\00:13:01.26 The apostle Paul is not here against the idea of 00:13:01.30\00:13:04.26 observing things, like you were saying a moment ago. 00:13:04.29\00:13:07.72 But the idea of observing things whether it is days or 00:13:07.76\00:13:11.16 months or seasons or years or anything else as a 00:13:11.19\00:13:13.95 replacement for a genuine heart religion with Christ and 00:13:13.99\00:13:18.62 with God, so some people try to say this is saying that 00:13:18.65\00:13:23.25 the Sabbath is unimportant. 00:13:23.28\00:13:24.81 I don't think that is the case. 00:13:24.84\00:13:26.30 Well that's not even in the context of all. 00:13:26.33\00:13:29.13 The apostle Paul no problem with the observances 00:13:29.17\00:13:32.42 because he observe the Sabbath and we today observe the 00:13:32.46\00:13:35.83 communion, we observe baptism we have of observances and 00:13:35.87\00:13:39.21 there's nothing wrong with observances. 00:13:39.25\00:13:40.81 Yep we get focused on the observances in this passage we 00:13:40.84\00:13:43.71 are missing his point. 00:13:43.74\00:13:44.84 That's right, and it will take us away from the 00:13:44.87\00:13:47.28 understanding that a servile relationship is what the 00:13:47.31\00:13:49.61 apostle Paul was speaking against. 00:13:49.64\00:13:51.18 We need to dig into this a little bit deeper, 00:13:51.22\00:13:53.18 but before we do we have to take a break. 00:13:53.22\00:13:56.06 So right now take a couple minutes and 00:13:56.09\00:13:58.90 we will be right back with you. 00:13:58.94\00:14:00.27
