Welcome back to Books of the Book we have been studying 00:00:06.14\00:00:08.16 the book of Galatians and we are talking today about 00:00:08.19\00:00:11.15 the Seed of Abraham and we left off at the break 00:00:11.19\00:00:14.08 talking about the Seed not being Isaac but being Christ. 00:00:14.11\00:00:17.90 Jim I think we were going to pick up right there. 00:00:17.94\00:00:21.59 Yes, verse 16 of Galatians 3 we read where it says, 00:00:21.63\00:00:24.95 "now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. 00:00:24.98\00:00:28.27 "He does not say, And to seeds, as of many, 00:00:28.30\00:00:30.81 "but as of one, 'And to your Seed', who is Christ. " 00:00:30.85\00:00:34.78 We made the point that the Seed is not Isaac, the Seed 00:00:34.82\00:00:38.87 it's not the lineage, the Jewish heritage as it were. 00:00:38.90\00:00:42.65 The Seed is not that which circumcision brings you into 00:00:42.69\00:00:46.41 connection with, but rather the Seed is Christ. 00:00:46.44\00:00:49.04 They were connected to Isaac, but if they weren't connected 00:00:49.08\00:00:52.21 to Christ they weren't going to be recipients of the promise. 00:00:52.24\00:00:56.03 This verse right here, if you look in your Bible there is 00:00:56.07\00:00:59.55 quotations around it because he is actually quoting from 00:00:59.59\00:01:03.04 the book of Genesis. 00:01:03.07\00:01:04.68 That's right and I think it is important for us to note 00:01:04.72\00:01:08.89 we miss a lot when we fail to realize or we forget that 00:01:08.93\00:01:13.07 all of the New Testament writers taught 00:01:13.11\00:01:15.60 from the Old Testament. 00:01:15.63\00:01:17.91 They preach the gospel from the Old Testament. 00:01:17.95\00:01:20.17 The Bible Jesus used was the Old Testament Scriptures. 00:01:20.21\00:01:23.44 Sometimes people get the idea that the Old Testament is 00:01:23.48\00:01:26.54 not gospel centered, we only stick with the New Testament. 00:01:26.58\00:01:30.05 But Jesus Himself told the disciples on the road to Emmaus 00:01:30.09\00:01:33.53 who didn't basically receive all that the prophets 00:01:33.56\00:01:37.41 had wrote or spoken. 00:01:37.44\00:01:39.33 He said you fools and slow of heart to believe all that 00:01:39.36\00:01:42.13 the prophets have spoken. 00:01:42.16\00:01:43.70 So Jesus said your foolish if you are not taking in what's 00:01:43.73\00:01:47.19 written in the Old Testament because that is the 00:01:47.23\00:01:49.15 foundation, that gives you the background of a lot of what 00:01:49.18\00:01:52.60 is being taught in the New Testament. 00:01:52.64\00:01:54.63 The apostle Paul well understood the Old Testament Scriptures. 00:01:54.66\00:01:56.95 That is what he was using so when he is writing and 00:01:56.98\00:02:01.07 quoting it is important for us to go back and find out 00:02:01.11\00:02:05.16 what the setting was, what the message was, 00:02:05.20\00:02:08.82 what the story was that he was quoting from and it will 00:02:08.85\00:02:12.29 fill out the picture for us and give us the real context 00:02:12.32\00:02:15.72 of what is being communicated. 00:02:15.76\00:02:17.76 That's right, if you look at this particular situation 00:02:17.80\00:02:20.42 we do learn something very significant by going back 00:02:20.45\00:02:23.04 to where he is quoting from. 00:02:23.07\00:02:24.97 It is in Genesis 22:18 it says, "in your seed" and again 00:02:25.01\00:02:31.32 it is the singular seed and that is what Paul is saying. 00:02:31.36\00:02:36.46 Not seeds but seed, "in your seed all the nations of the 00:02:36.49\00:02:41.56 "earth shall be blessed, because 00:02:41.60\00:02:44.45 you have obeyed My voice. " 00:02:44.48\00:02:47.54 Now I find that fascinating, it says that Abraham 00:02:47.58\00:02:50.94 received this inheritance by promise and we think it's 00:02:50.97\00:02:55.56 the promise of faith and not obedience, not anything 00:02:55.59\00:02:59.43 to do with the law, it is just faith, but yet you go 00:02:59.47\00:03:03.49 back to the exact place where God makes that promise and 00:03:03.53\00:03:07.52 it says the reason I am giving you this promise is 00:03:07.55\00:03:10.03 because you have obeyed My voice. 00:03:10.07\00:03:12.08 It only makes sense because true obedience, the kind that 00:03:12.12\00:03:15.63 has the Spirit of Christ with it is an obedience 00:03:15.66\00:03:19.76 that stems from faith. 00:03:19.79\00:03:21.68 Abraham had that faith that obeyed. 00:03:21.72\00:03:24.24 That's right in so we went through some of this before. 00:03:24.27\00:03:28.27 So we are going to go to Galatians 3:19 and continue on 00:03:28.30\00:03:33.21 where it says, "what purpose then does the law serve? 00:03:33.24\00:03:37.28 "It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed 00:03:37.31\00:03:40.54 "should come to whom the promise was made; and it was 00:03:40.57\00:03:44.43 "appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. " 00:03:44.47\00:03:48.29 So Paul was just making the point here that the purpose 00:03:48.32\00:03:52.08 the law was given was not to cancel out that promise. 00:03:52.12\00:03:55.33 It wasn't contradictory to the promise, it actually was 00:03:55.37\00:03:58.54 working in conjunction with the promise. 00:03:58.58\00:04:00.33 The commandment was to help bring the people to 00:04:00.36\00:04:03.51 a realization of their transgression because they have 00:04:03.54\00:04:06.36 forgotten their true condition and they have forgotten 00:04:06.39\00:04:09.63 their need of the righteousness outside of themselves. 00:04:09.67\00:04:12.37 That's right and it picks up really clearly on that in 00:04:12.41\00:04:14.91 verse 23 and we have already been through these verses. 00:04:14.95\00:04:17.42 It is the foundation for where we are headed. 00:04:17.46\00:04:20.06 In verse 23 it says, "but before faith came, we were 00:04:20.09\00:04:22.93 "kept under guard by the law, For the faith which would 00:04:22.96\00:04:26.03 "afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor 00:04:26.06\00:04:29.09 "to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified 00:04:29.12\00:04:32.00 "by faith. But after faith has come, 00:04:32.04\00:04:35.26 we are no longer under a tutor. " 00:04:35.29\00:04:36.60 So again the law was serving as that tutor that was 00:04:36.63\00:04:40.23 showing us that we were outside the will of God. 00:04:40.26\00:04:43.79 Showing us that being outside of the will of God gave us 00:04:43.82\00:04:46.91 a certain penalty of death and giving us motivation 00:04:46.94\00:04:50.24 to go to Christ to find what we needed. 00:04:50.27\00:04:53.50 That something we needed was through faith the promise 00:04:53.53\00:04:57.79 of the Spirit, we read that in verse 14 of chapter 3. 00:04:57.83\00:05:01.04 You receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. 00:05:01.08\00:05:05.18 So through faith we are born of the Spirit, born-again. 00:05:05.21\00:05:09.03 This is a significant point and what it means is that 00:05:09.06\00:05:12.84 the Spirit of God writes His law on our hearts. 00:05:12.88\00:05:16.22 Then it says no longer do we need a tutor. 00:05:16.26\00:05:19.21 In other words, once the Spirit of God comes in we don't 00:05:19.25\00:05:24.47 need someone to say don't commit adultery. 00:05:24.51\00:05:27.52 We are not going to want to commit adultery. 00:05:27.55\00:05:30.50 - that's right. We don't need to say be sure and keep 00:05:30.53\00:05:34.15 the Sabbath, we're going to desire to do God's will 00:05:34.19\00:05:37.78 and to keep the Sabbath. 00:05:37.81\00:05:38.84 No longer is the wall serving in that purpose. 00:05:38.88\00:05:41.02 We have now come to a point where we agree with God 00:05:41.05\00:05:44.55 and because of that in verse 26 it makes this beautiful 00:05:44.58\00:05:48.22 statement, "for you are all sons of God through faith in 00:05:48.26\00:05:51.87 "Christ Jesus. " We become sons through faith. 00:05:51.90\00:05:55.85 That seed experience of being a part of the family of 00:05:55.88\00:05:58.49 Abraham happens through faith. 00:05:58.53\00:06:01.03 So what we need to grasp about that, that is when we are 00:06:01.07\00:06:03.51 talking about the seed and our viewers may not be grasping 00:06:03.55\00:06:05.96 the terms, some Bibles will say descendents. 00:06:05.99\00:06:09.00 The whole idea is this, the Jewish nation under stood 00:06:09.03\00:06:12.20 that through the descendent of Abraham that it was through 00:06:12.23\00:06:16.28 Abraham that the whole nation would be blessed. 00:06:16.32\00:06:19.16 They understood that blessing was them. 00:06:19.19\00:06:21.21 Anybody who was born through the line of Abraham. 00:06:21.25\00:06:24.16 Anybody who was a descendent, a literal descendent of 00:06:24.19\00:06:27.14 Abraham even unto this day Jim, there are many Christians 00:06:27.18\00:06:30.86 who understand that the nation of Israel has this special 00:06:30.89\00:06:34.77 place in God's heart because of their natural lineage. 00:06:34.81\00:06:38.17 They don't take into account certain places and things 00:06:38.20\00:06:42.34 for example in the New Testament book of John chapter 8 00:06:42.37\00:06:46.20 Jesus is talking to the religious leaders and He tells 00:06:46.24\00:06:50.52 these Jewish leaders, natural born Jews, if you were 00:06:50.55\00:06:54.18 Abraham's children you would do the works of Abraham. 00:06:54.21\00:06:57.16 If you were Abraham's children? What's that about? 00:06:57.19\00:06:59.73 They were Abraham's children, but the point Jesus was 00:06:59.76\00:07:02.27 making is the point Paul is making right here. 00:07:02.30\00:07:05.62 That the understanding of the Jews was that their 00:07:05.66\00:07:08.91 inheritance was going to be based on being natural born 00:07:08.94\00:07:11.95 descendents of the line of Abraham. 00:07:11.99\00:07:15.24 Whereas, when Paul says Abraham's seed was not his 00:07:15.28\00:07:19.32 descendent, that the promise was made not through not Isaac, 00:07:19.36\00:07:24.16 but long after Isaac's line, Jesus Christ and all who would 00:07:24.19\00:07:28.96 be born of Him instead of born of Isaac. 00:07:28.99\00:07:32.42 I want to look at that real quickly in a couple of 00:07:32.45\00:07:36.81 passages, we are going to go to Romans 5:18, 19. 00:07:36.85\00:07:41.14 Romans 5:18, 19 the Bible says, "therefore, as though one 00:07:41.18\00:07:47.41 "man's offense, judgment came to all men" this is talking about 00:07:47.45\00:07:51.26 Adam, it was Adam's sin that pasted sin onto the human race. 00:07:51.30\00:07:55.07 It goes on to say, "resulting in condemnation, 00:07:55.11\00:07:58.70 "even so through one Man's righteous act. " 00:07:58.73\00:08:01.88 that would be Jesus, "the free gift came 00:08:01.91\00:08:04.99 "to all men, resulting in justification of life. 00:08:05.03\00:08:08.08 "For as by one man's disobedience many were made 00:08:08.12\00:08:11.38 "sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many 00:08:11.42\00:08:14.64 "will be made righteous. " 00:08:14.68\00:08:16.12 So it puts a contrast here between Jesus and Adam. 00:08:16.15\00:08:22.14 We see Paul doing that again in 1 Corinthians 15:22 00:08:22.18\00:08:29.30 it says, "for as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all 00:08:29.34\00:08:35.10 "all shall be made alive. " And then in verse 45 it says, 00:08:35.13\00:08:39.91 "and so it is written, the first man Adam became a living 00:08:39.95\00:08:44.69 "being. The last Adam became a life-giving Spirit. " 00:08:44.72\00:08:48.41 So here he actually applies this term last Adam to Jesus. 00:08:48.45\00:08:51.49 He is comparing the two and this is what he is saying. 00:08:51.52\00:08:54.82 Just as Adam was the progenitor of the human race. 00:08:54.85\00:08:58.08 We all descended from Adam, in the same way, and because 00:08:58.12\00:09:01.99 we descended from Adam we received what Adam passed on 00:09:02.02\00:09:05.19 to us, the nature of Adam, for fallen nature of sin. 00:09:05.23\00:09:09.20 So in the same way, those who received the nature of the 00:09:09.23\00:09:12.81 second Adam, one who came in Adam's place and lived the 00:09:12.85\00:09:16.39 perfect life that Adam failed to live. 00:09:16.43\00:09:19.46 That last Adam becomes the progenitor of the new race. 00:09:19.49\00:09:24.07 In other words, those who accept Jesus and are born of 00:09:24.11\00:09:28.92 Christ, of His Seed born of the Spirit become a member 00:09:28.96\00:09:33.74 of that Seed, that new family. 00:09:33.77\00:09:36.86 So the problem with the thinking of the Jews of 00:09:36.89\00:09:41.64 Christ's day and Paul's day where he is trying 00:09:41.68\00:09:43.75 to address them, is that their understanding was that 00:09:43.78\00:09:47.37 the blessing came from being born, and as I said many 00:09:47.40\00:09:51.05 Christians today that the blessing came from being born 00:09:51.08\00:09:54.70 of the nation of Israel instead of being born of 00:09:54.73\00:09:58.93 the true Israel, Jesus Christ. 00:09:58.97\00:10:01.60 That was the name that was given to Jacob once 00:10:01.63\00:10:03.50 he became a spiritual man and an overcomer. 00:10:03.54\00:10:05.34 It was a spiritual name that was pointing forward to 00:10:05.37\00:10:07.61 the true Israel, Jesus Christ who is going to be the head 00:10:07.65\00:10:10.81 of a new race and would pass on His nature to humanity 00:10:10.84\00:10:13.97 and then bring them into the family of God. 00:10:14.00\00:10:16.37 Amen, amen and you know when he continues in the book 00:10:16.41\00:10:19.91 of Galatians, he makes that point pretty strongly. 00:10:19.95\00:10:23.38 If we look back and Galatians 3 and I'll pick up in verse 00:10:23.42\00:10:27.53 26 so that we can catch the sense of what he was saying. 00:10:27.57\00:10:31.65 It says, "for you are all sons of God through faith 00:10:31.68\00:10:36.81 "in Christ Jesus. " Not to be honest that was something of 00:10:36.85\00:10:40.97 a heretical statement for Him to be making to them. 00:10:41.01\00:10:44.01 What? All sons of God! They believed that only the 00:10:44.05\00:10:47.02 circumcised were sons of God. 00:10:47.06\00:10:49.17 Only those that were of the direct lineage of Abraham. 00:10:49.21\00:10:52.08 If you weren't of the direct lineage Abraham then you needed 00:10:52.11\00:10:54.44 to be circumcised. - so much so that it didn't even 00:10:54.47\00:10:57.46 matter so much how you lived as long as you were 00:10:57.50\00:11:00.42 circumcised, against circum- cision became a substitute. 00:11:00.45\00:11:02.91 - a substitute for obedience, a substitute for genuine 00:11:02.94\00:11:06.47 faith and so he is making the point no, if you want to be 00:11:06.50\00:11:09.99 part of the family, you have to have the faith of Abraham 00:11:10.03\00:11:14.37 that brings this Spirit thereby being born of Christ. 00:11:14.41\00:11:18.72 Born of the Spirit of God. 00:11:18.75\00:11:20.79 It says in verse 27, "For as many of you as were baptized 00:11:20.83\00:11:25.10 "into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew 00:11:25.13\00:11:28.61 "nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is 00:11:28.64\00:11:32.08 "neither male nor female; for you are all one in 00:11:32.12\00:11:35.02 "Christ Jesus. " Now the part that really stung to some 00:11:35.06\00:11:39.68 was probably that first part. 00:11:39.72\00:11:42.01 There is neither Jew nor Greek. 00:11:42.04\00:11:44.26 I mean here Paul was saying there is no distinction, 00:11:44.29\00:11:46.99 you are all equal heirs to salvation, 00:11:47.02\00:11:50.73 the new birth question and in verse 29 he says, 00:11:50.77\00:11:54.48 "And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, 00:11:54.52\00:11:58.88 "and heirs according to the promise. " 00:11:58.91\00:12:01.88 Isn't that powerful? - It's powerful to me because I'm not 00:12:01.92\00:12:04.05 and natural born descendent of Abraham, but I'm 00:12:04.08\00:12:05.93 a heir of that inheritance. 00:12:05.97\00:12:08.83 And there is another place where it says this and 00:12:08.87\00:12:10.81 I thought it would be valuable for us to look at it 00:12:10.85\00:12:12.96 Because the New Testament is not silent on this point. 00:12:13.00\00:12:19.32 If you look at Romans 2:28 it was either earlier or 00:12:19.36\00:12:23.69 perhaps in our last episode where we were touching on 00:12:23.72\00:12:28.02 verses 25 and 26. 00:12:28.05\00:12:29.67 But in verse 28 it says, "for he is not a Jew who is 00:12:29.70\00:12:33.98 "one outwardly, nor is circum- cision that which is outward 00:12:34.02\00:12:38.10 "in the flesh. But he is a Jew who is one inwardly and 00:12:38.14\00:12:42.13 "circumcision is that of the heart. In the Spirit not 00:12:42.16\00:12:46.04 "in the letter whose praises not from men but from God. " 00:12:46.08\00:12:50.15 So when you look at this passage is pointing out that 00:12:50.19\00:12:54.46 it's the Spirit ultimately and not the letter that 00:12:54.49\00:12:58.73 makes us children of Abraham. 00:12:58.76\00:13:00.73 So the Spirit here is speaking about inwardly religion 00:13:00.76\00:13:03.78 that finds its way into the letter, into the outside, 00:13:03.81\00:13:07.23 but the letter doesn't always mean you are obeying the 00:13:07.26\00:13:10.90 spirit and so we have this beautiful picture painted for 00:13:10.93\00:13:14.54 us in the book of Galatians that any one of us 00:13:14.57\00:13:17.28 can be a child of Abraham through Christ. 00:13:17.32\00:13:20.02 May God bless you! 00:13:20.05\00:13:21.76
