Welcome back to Books of the Book, I'm Pastor Mark Howard. 00:00:24.19\00:00:27.45 I'm the director of the Emmanuel Institute of Evangelism 00:00:27.48\00:00:30.07 in the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventist and 00:00:30.11\00:00:32.40 I'm the Pastor of Gobels Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:32.44\00:00:34.70 and I'm here with my brother Jim Howard. 00:00:34.74\00:00:36.67 Yes my name is Pastor Jim Howard and I'm the Pastor of 00:00:36.71\00:00:39.70 the Detroit Metropolitan and South Lyon's Seventh-day 00:00:39.74\00:00:42.69 Adventist Church in Michigan. 00:00:42.73\00:00:44.18 And we are excited once again to study the 00:00:44.22\00:00:45.96 book of Galatians with you. 00:00:46.00\00:00:47.36 We love to get into the word and this book of all books 00:00:47.39\00:00:49.92 is so powerful and exciting. 00:00:49.95\00:00:52.21 It is full of powerful gospel truths and that is the 00:00:52.24\00:00:56.36 keynote of the book of Galatians is the gospel. 00:00:56.40\00:01:00.67 Paul wrote this to clarify the everlasting gospel and 00:01:00.70\00:01:04.26 the last time we were together we talked about what 00:01:04.29\00:01:08.63 Paul terms the curse of the law in Galatians Chapter 3 00:01:08.66\00:01:12.96 and we are going to follow that up almost where 00:01:13.00\00:01:16.68 we left off in Galatians Chapter 3. 00:01:16.72\00:01:18.62 In fact we will pick up a little bit and do a review in 00:01:18.65\00:01:21.52 Galatians 3:13 so if you have your Bible, those viewing 00:01:21.56\00:01:24.40 at home, if you would turn with us to Galatians 3 and 00:01:24.43\00:01:28.07 it is in the New Testament. 00:01:28.11\00:01:29.13 Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 00:01:29.17\00:01:31.68 1 and 2 Corinthians and then Galatians. 00:01:31.71\00:01:34.15 We're going to Galatians 3:13 and here the apostle writes 00:01:34.18\00:01:39.91 "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having 00:01:39.94\00:01:45.63 "become a curse for us (for it is written, cursed is 00:01:45.67\00:01:48.88 "everyone who hangs on a tree), that the blessing of 00:01:48.91\00:01:51.91 "Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, 00:01:51.94\00:01:54.91 "that we might receive the promise 00:01:54.94\00:01:56.81 "of the Spirit through faith. " 00:01:56.85\00:01:58.85 Something we need to grasp and just reiterating from 00:01:58.88\00:02:01.47 last time is that Christ did not come to redeem us 00:02:01.51\00:02:04.06 from the law but from the curse of the law. 00:02:04.10\00:02:06.62 Of course the curse of the law is the curse of sin. 00:02:06.66\00:02:09.03 "The wages of sin is death". 00:02:09.07\00:02:10.68 What is interesting here is that he goes into this 00:02:10.71\00:02:14.22 idea of the blessing of Abraham, the promise of the 00:02:14.26\00:02:17.64 Spirit and then he goes on from there to talk about 00:02:17.68\00:02:21.03 Abraham and his seed. 00:02:21.07\00:02:22.85 Today our topic is the 'Seed of Abraham'. 00:02:22.88\00:02:25.70 Jim you are going to pick up there in verse 15 00:02:25.74\00:02:28.50 I believe if you just want to start and pick up. 00:02:28.53\00:02:31.22 Sure I think we need to do is start back at verse 5 and let's 00:02:31.26\00:02:35.08 look there and get a little bit of an understanding of 00:02:35.11\00:02:38.90 this blessing of Abraham before we dive into 00:02:38.93\00:02:41.83 the Seed of Abraham. 00:02:41.87\00:02:43.41 We're starting in verse 5 of Galatians 3 where it says, 00:02:43.45\00:02:46.43 "therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works 00:02:46.47\00:02:49.47 "miracles among you, does He do it by works of the law, 00:02:49.51\00:02:52.55 "or by the hearing of faith? - just as Abraham believed 00:02:52.58\00:02:55.59 "God... it was accounted to him for righteousness. 00:02:55.62\00:02:59.17 "Therefore know that only those who are of faith are 00:02:59.21\00:03:02.78 "sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, for seeing that God 00:03:02.81\00:03:06.33 "would justify the Gentiles by faith, preach the gospel 00:03:06.36\00:03:10.08 "to Abraham beforehand, saying, in you all the nations 00:03:10.12\00:03:13.75 "shall be blessed. So then those who are of faith are 00:03:13.78\00:03:17.38 "blessed with believing Abraham. " 00:03:17.42\00:03:19.63 This is a fascinating passage. 00:03:19.67\00:03:21.81 I want to add a clarification here, in some translations 00:03:21.85\00:03:24.03 it is faithful Abraham weren't blessed because they believe 00:03:24.07\00:03:26.22 Abraham, but they are blessed along with Abraham 00:03:26.26\00:03:30.21 who was a believer and who was faithful. 00:03:30.25\00:03:32.37 That could be confusing, but if you look at verse 8 00:03:32.40\00:03:36.14 specifically, "the Scripture for seeing that God would 00:03:36.17\00:03:39.88 "justify the Gentiles by faith. " 00:03:39.91\00:03:42.74 So here we see that God was fore seeing that the Gentiles 00:03:42.78\00:03:47.24 were going to be part of this blessing and this promise 00:03:47.28\00:03:51.71 that was given to Abraham. 00:03:51.74\00:03:53.14 It says not in you all the Jews shall be blessed 00:03:53.17\00:03:56.49 but in you all the nations shall be blessed. 00:03:56.52\00:03:59.77 So that would include not only those who are commonly referred 00:03:59.80\00:04:03.81 to as the circumcised, but it would also include the 00:04:03.85\00:04:07.30 uncircumcised which the apostle Paul here is saying 00:04:07.33\00:04:11.43 is that means evidently that God was justifying not 00:04:11.46\00:04:15.00 because of the circumcision of Abraham but because of 00:04:15.03\00:04:17.66 the faith of Abraham. - That's right, that's right! 00:04:17.69\00:04:20.20 If all the Gentiles were going to receive the same 00:04:20.24\00:04:22.81 blessing then it must come by faith and not by 00:04:22.85\00:04:25.35 circumcision and then in verse 14 where you had read 00:04:25.39\00:04:29.12 in the open it said, "that the blessing of Abraham might 00:04:29.15\00:04:32.80 "come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might 00:04:32.83\00:04:36.75 "receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. " 00:04:36.79\00:04:41.96 So here we have Abraham as the one to whom the promise 00:04:42.00\00:04:46.39 was made, and the promise that the apostle Paul said 00:04:46.42\00:04:50.40 he would receive and the Gentiles would receive is the 00:04:50.43\00:04:54.37 promise of the Spirit which is fascinating. 00:04:54.40\00:04:58.61 The Spirit in other places the apostle Paul talks about 00:04:58.65\00:05:02.62 having a special role in terms of our awareness 00:05:02.65\00:05:07.15 of the eternal inheritance. 00:05:07.18\00:05:09.36 When we have the Spirit is what he calls a guarantee of 00:05:09.39\00:05:12.93 our eternal inheritance. 00:05:12.97\00:05:14.21 There is one place where we might look at that. 00:05:14.24\00:05:15.62 Ephesians chapter 1 and we will look at verse 13 it says, 00:05:15.66\00:05:24.27 "in Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of 00:05:24.31\00:05:30.23 "truth, but gospel of your salvation; in whom also, 00:05:30.27\00:05:36.16 "having believed, you were sealed with the 00:05:36.20\00:05:38.03 "Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our 00:05:38.07\00:05:41.55 "inheritance until the redemption of the purchased 00:05:41.59\00:05:44.95 "possession," so the guarantee of our inheritance is 00:05:44.99\00:05:47.82 the Spirit. - that's right. - so when the Gentiles 00:05:47.85\00:05:51.83 received the Spirit that was evidence that they were 00:05:51.87\00:05:55.78 partakers of the inheritance that was promised to Abraham. 00:05:55.81\00:05:59.45 So you have this example for instance, remember we 00:05:59.48\00:06:03.48 studied about Acts 15 where the apostle Peter made 00:06:03.51\00:06:07.35 the point, he said look we know that God intends for 00:06:07.39\00:06:11.84 the Gentiles to be equal inheritors of the promise 00:06:11.88\00:06:16.30 with the Jews because the Gentiles received 00:06:16.33\00:06:19.77 the Spirit just like we did. 00:06:19.81\00:06:21.79 So the Spirit becomes that promise that God had given. 00:06:21.82\00:06:25.08 Now here is an interesting thought. 00:06:25.12\00:06:26.83 These Judaizers in the Galatian church who were causing 00:06:26.86\00:06:33.63 so much trouble and perverting the gospel. 00:06:33.67\00:06:35.53 They were not only missing how to obtain the promise, 00:06:35.57\00:06:41.07 but they were misconstruing what the promise itself was. 00:06:41.10\00:06:45.41 They were not only misconstruing how to be justified, 00:06:45.44\00:06:49.95 to receive the blessing of Abraham but they were missing 00:06:49.98\00:06:54.45 what the blessing even was. 00:06:54.48\00:06:56.19 The blessing was the Spirit, being born of the Spirit. 00:06:56.22\00:06:59.33 They were seeking to just use circumcision to avoid 00:06:59.36\00:07:02.43 having to have that internal change, 00:07:02.47\00:07:05.27 that the Spirit would bring. 00:07:05.30\00:07:06.83 You see the Spirit is born-again experience, that change 00:07:06.87\00:07:10.86 of heart, that change of life and they were putting 00:07:10.90\00:07:15.01 the circumcision as a substitute for that change and 00:07:15.04\00:07:18.35 they were missing out on the power of the Gospel 00:07:18.38\00:07:21.65 which is a changed life. 00:07:21.69\00:07:23.83 That is right, and you know Jim what is interesting and 00:07:23.86\00:07:27.10 important here to note is that some people when they read 00:07:27.14\00:07:30.17 Galatians or even when they read through the Scriptures, they 00:07:30.21\00:07:33.20 want to lump in circumcision and the whole system of 00:07:33.24\00:07:37.28 the law together and I have had people ask me, 00:07:37.32\00:07:40.57 Christians come up and ask me, isn't it true that the 00:07:40.61\00:07:43.69 law of circumcision and the law of sacrifice and offering and 00:07:43.72\00:07:48.23 the Ten Commandments was all one system of law? 00:07:48.27\00:07:50.49 In one sense there is truth to that, in the sense that 00:07:50.53\00:07:53.52 the Old Testament for example, the word for law is the 00:07:53.56\00:07:56.52 word Torah and it means instruction. 00:07:56.56\00:07:59.27 When you read the word law in the Old Testament you are 00:07:59.31\00:08:01.86 talking about the Torah or the instruction of God. 00:08:01.89\00:08:04.83 The Hebrews have that connected together in the 00:08:04.87\00:08:07.73 Pentateuch which is the first five books of the Bible, 00:08:07.77\00:08:10.02 the books of Moses. 00:08:10.05\00:08:11.95 So while that is true yet there was also a distinction. 00:08:11.98\00:08:15.83 For example, the Ten Commandments of God were written 00:08:15.86\00:08:19.67 with finger of God, but only thing in Scripture 00:08:19.70\00:08:22.47 we know that was part of the document that was written 00:08:22.51\00:08:25.46 with God's own finger when it was transported 00:08:25.50\00:08:28.63 throughout the experience of Israel. 00:08:28.66\00:08:30.56 It was carried in the sacred Ark of the Covenant, whereas the 00:08:30.59\00:08:33.75 other laws of Moses were put in a special pocket beside 00:08:33.78\00:08:36.71 the Ark of the Covenant. So there was a distinction there. 00:08:36.74\00:08:39.63 In the New Testament we find for example, in 00:08:39.67\00:08:42.31 1 Corinthians Chapter 7 the apostle Paul draws a very 00:08:42.35\00:08:46.64 clear distinction between circumcision and the 00:08:46.67\00:08:49.48 Ten Commandments, I think because he foresaw the tendency 00:08:49.51\00:08:53.59 of some may be to try and draw a separation or lump them 00:08:53.63\00:08:57.14 together and he wanted to make sure that even though 00:08:57.17\00:09:00.61 circumcision was a rite given by God, it was a rite given 00:09:00.65\00:09:04.52 to Abraham because of his diversion in God's plan. 00:09:04.56\00:09:09.05 It was not part of the original plan and it was a clear 00:09:09.09\00:09:12.16 distinction to be held apart from the Ten Commandment law. 00:09:12.19\00:09:15.71 1 Corinthians 7:19 says, the apostle Paul writes here, 00:09:15.75\00:09:19.67 "circumcision is nothing an uncircumcision is nothing," 00:09:19.71\00:09:23.11 and this is in the sense of not that it was insignificant 00:09:23.15\00:09:26.72 God had given it, but in the greater scheme of things it 00:09:26.76\00:09:30.29 wasn't the main issue, "circumcision is nothing and 00:09:30.33\00:09:33.16 "uncircumcised is nothing, but keeping the Commandments 00:09:33.19\00:09:36.50 "of God is what matters. " 00:09:36.53\00:09:38.67 So there is a clear distinction between circumcision 00:09:38.70\00:09:40.67 and the Ten Commandment law. 00:09:40.71\00:09:42.44 That's right and I have actually heard someone say 00:09:42.47\00:09:45.18 before that word keeping the commandments of God, he is not 00:09:45.22\00:09:49.84 talking about the Ten Commandments It's just talking 00:09:49.88\00:09:51.39 about the commands of Jesus so It's making a distinction there. 00:09:51.43\00:09:55.06 But I think if we look in Romans we will find it further 00:09:55.10\00:09:59.22 outlines that exact point. 00:09:59.26\00:10:01.21 So looking back at Romans 2:21 in says, "you, therefore, 00:10:01.25\00:10:06.92 "who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who 00:10:06.95\00:10:11.06 "preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? 00:10:11.09\00:10:14.25 "You who say, do not commit adultery, do you commit 00:10:14.29\00:10:17.41 "adultery?" So clearly he is talking about the 00:10:17.44\00:10:18.94 Ten Commandments right? - right. 00:10:18.97\00:10:20.66 Now in verse 25 he says, "For circumcision is indeed 00:10:20.70\00:10:25.18 "profitable if you keep the law; but if you are a breaker 00:10:25.21\00:10:30.08 "of the law, you're circumcision has become 00:10:30.12\00:10:32.57 "uncircumcision. " Now this next verse is where the difference is 00:10:32.60\00:10:36.92 clearly made. "Therefore, if an uncircumcised man 00:10:36.95\00:10:40.57 "keeps the righteous requirements of the law, 00:10:40.60\00:10:44.15 "will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision?" 00:10:44.19\00:10:47.53 So in the context of the Ten Commandments- 00:10:47.57\00:10:49.70 - How can an uncircumcised man keep the righteous requirements 00:10:49.73\00:10:51.91 off the law if circumcision is part of the law? 00:10:51.95\00:10:54.75 Now that is exactly right and clearly in the context 00:10:54.78\00:10:56.85 in this one the law he is speaking of, is the 00:10:56.89\00:11:00.06 Ten Commandments. - in the very context that is absolutely true. 00:11:00.10\00:11:02.69 So this idea of circumcision and the promises of God, 00:11:02.72\00:11:09.89 the Jews had gotten distorted in their understanding of the 00:11:09.93\00:11:14.02 importance of circumcision and actually placed it 00:11:14.05\00:11:16.99 in the place of obedience. 00:11:17.02\00:11:20.20 It is interesting there in the passage you read in Romans 00:11:20.24\00:11:25.19 that he said that circumcision is only significant if you 00:11:25.22\00:11:30.14 are obedient to God. - right. 00:11:30.18\00:11:32.70 So we read the other day that circumcision, 00:11:32.74\00:11:35.57 the Bible said was given to Abraham in Romans 4 as a sign 00:11:35.60\00:11:40.93 of faith, not a sign of obedience, but a sign of faith. 00:11:40.96\00:11:46.25 Yet in Romans 2 it says that circumcision is only 00:11:46.29\00:11:49.25 profitable if you obey. 00:11:49.29\00:11:52.15 So we see the link with faith and obedience once again 00:11:52.18\00:11:54.69 in the writings of Paul. 00:11:54.72\00:11:55.95 Faith obeys, the exercise of faith is obedience. 00:11:55.98\00:12:00.95 Now we are going to go to verse 15 in Galatians 3 00:12:00.98\00:12:04.95 and we are going to carry on here in Paul's writing. 00:12:04.99\00:12:08.89 Galatians 3:15 it says, Brethren rather I speak in the manner of 00:12:08.93\00:12:11.39 "men: Though it is only a man's covenant, yet if it is 00:12:11.43\00:12:14.77 "confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it. Now to Abraham 00:12:14.80\00:12:18.01 "and his Seed where the promises made. He does not say, 00:12:18.04\00:12:21.67 "And to seeds, as of many, but as of one, And to your 00:12:21.70\00:12:25.13 "Seed, who is Christ. And this I say, that the law, 00:12:25.16\00:12:28.11 "which was 430 years later, cannot annul the covenant 00:12:28.15\00:12:31.18 "that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it 00:12:31.21\00:12:33.85 "should make the promise of no effect. For if the 00:12:33.89\00:12:36.45 "inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; 00:12:36.49\00:12:39.24 "but God gave it to Abraham by promise. " 00:12:39.27\00:12:41.40 Now Paul's listeners here, his audience believed in 00:12:41.43\00:12:45.07 Abraham, they believed in the promise that God gave 00:12:45.10\00:12:48.66 to Abraham, they believed that the descendent of Abraham 00:12:48.70\00:12:53.81 was the one through whom the promises would come and 00:12:53.84\00:12:58.92 and that was Isaac. - right. 00:12:58.95\00:13:01.07 However Paul takes that belief that they hold in common, 00:13:01.10\00:13:04.66 yes Abraham was the father of the faithful, yes God 00:13:04.70\00:13:07.57 the promises, but then he turns it and says I agree with 00:13:07.61\00:13:11.18 you all but you guys need to understand that 00:13:11.22\00:13:13.11 the Seed was not Isaac at all, the Seed was Christ. 00:13:13.15\00:13:17.98 In other words to be a part of Isaac means you have to 00:13:18.01\00:13:22.17 be a descendent of Abraham, literally born of the Jewish 00:13:22.20\00:13:26.32 nation and circumcised, but if he wasn't the Seed, 00:13:26.36\00:13:29.58 then circumcision isn't the way into the family. 00:13:29.62\00:13:32.78 So he is bringing out the fact that the seed is not Isaac. 00:13:32.81\00:13:37.32 The seed really is Christ. 00:13:37.36\00:13:39.09 And we have to go to our break and we come back from our 00:13:39.12\00:13:43.09 break we are going to address this issue of the Seed of 00:13:43.13\00:13:47.29 Abraham, not as Isaac in the literal nation of Israel, 00:13:47.32\00:13:51.13 but the Seed of Abraham is Christ and we are talking about 00:13:51.17\00:13:54.94 spiritual Israel here, so stay tuned, 00:13:54.98\00:13:56.96 We will be right back! 00:13:57.00\00:13:58.56
