Welcome back, right before our break we were talking about 00:00:05.11\00:00:09.13 the purpose of the law. 00:00:09.16\00:00:10.92 Jim you are going to jump right in here to Galatians 3. 00:00:10.96\00:00:15.99 Let's take a look at Galatians 3:19, right there the 00:00:16.03\00:00:20.99 apostle Paul pretty much fore- shadows, he is thinking ahead 00:00:21.03\00:00:24.97 and knows what type of questions are coming. 00:00:25.01\00:00:27.05 In verse 19 he says, "what purpose then does the law 00:00:27.08\00:00:31.41 "serve?" If the law, like that bowl of fruit wasn't to 00:00:31.45\00:00:35.74 catch the oil, does that mean we throw it away? 00:00:35.77\00:00:38.49 If the law wasn't for justification does that 00:00:38.53\00:00:41.21 mean there is no need for the law? 00:00:41.24\00:00:42.81 The apostle Paul is trying to address that question. 00:00:42.84\00:00:44.71 He says, "it was added because of transgressions," let me 00:00:44.75\00:00:49.50 stop there for a moment. 00:00:49.54\00:00:50.88 There are many people when they look at that think well 00:00:50.92\00:00:53.94 the Ten Commandments then must have been added just 00:00:53.98\00:00:56.97 because of sin and then it goes on to say, 00:00:57.00\00:01:00.65 "till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made;" 00:01:00.69\00:01:04.03 so they must have just been added because of sin and then 00:01:04.06\00:01:07.26 they end and there is no longer a need to keep them after 00:01:07.30\00:01:10.46 the Seed has come. 00:01:10.50\00:01:12.31 We are going to address that a little more as we advance 00:01:12.34\00:01:14.41 along but I want to make this point. 00:01:14.44\00:01:16.04 When it says law, first of all this is talking about not 00:01:16.07\00:01:19.80 just the Ten Commandments, again it's that word nomos, 00:01:19.84\00:01:23.53 it just means law in general. 00:01:23.57\00:01:24.88 - our viewers if they weren't here before, the Greek 00:01:24.92\00:01:29.75 or original text of Galatians does not use a definite 00:01:29.79\00:01:34.59 article anywhere Paul is talking about law. 00:01:34.62\00:01:36.75 In other words it's not the law, but in the original it 00:01:36.79\00:01:39.67 is simply law. - that's right. 00:01:39.70\00:01:41.96 So the idea is what is the purpose of law in general if 00:01:42.00\00:01:45.20 the promise is how we are to receive the inheritance? 00:01:45.23\00:01:48.14 So he says it was added because of transgressions. 00:01:48.17\00:01:52.06 If you think about, whether it's the moral law, the 00:01:52.10\00:01:55.36 Ten Commandments, whether it's the sacrificial laws, 00:01:55.40\00:01:58.60 whether it's circumcision, the issue that was heeded in the 00:01:58.63\00:02:02.33 book of Galatians, what ever your talking about in terms of 00:02:02.36\00:02:06.03 law, the reason that they were given in part 00:02:06.06\00:02:09.29 was because of transgression. 00:02:09.33\00:02:11.60 In other words prior to any sin coming into the world 00:02:11.63\00:02:15.62 there was no need because the principles of the law 00:02:15.66\00:02:18.65 were in the heart and people were living the law 00:02:18.69\00:02:21.62 in their lives, God's creation was living out the law. 00:02:21.65\00:02:25.25 Once there was a fall, especially once God's people 00:02:25.28\00:02:28.85 went into Egypt and they came out. 00:02:28.88\00:02:31.32 In order to instruct them, in order to give humanity 00:02:31.36\00:02:33.72 a clear picture once more of His will, the law was given. 00:02:33.76\00:02:37.95 He speaks of it as being given with a specific role in 00:02:37.99\00:02:41.76 this time, but this giving of the law isn't talking 00:02:41.79\00:02:45.52 about the existence of the law in the whole. 00:02:45.56\00:02:48.09 It's talking about a picture of God's will, 00:02:48.12\00:02:50.62 a picture of God's will. 00:02:50.65\00:02:52.40 So what we are going to look at here in this next verse 00:02:52.44\00:02:55.39 it's going to begin to flush out for us what the real 00:02:55.43\00:02:58.34 purpose of the law was as proclaimed from Sinai. 00:02:58.38\00:03:02.03 So it says in the next part, "it was added because 00:03:02.06\00:03:05.64 "of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the 00:03:05.68\00:03:08.45 "promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by 00:03:08.48\00:03:11.22 "the hand of a mediator. Now the mediator does not 00:03:11.26\00:03:13.73 "mediate for one only, but God is one. " 00:03:13.77\00:03:15.95 He is simply making the point the law and the promises 00:03:15.98\00:03:18.46 both came from God and God is one. 00:03:18.50\00:03:20.77 They are not contrary to one another. 00:03:20.81\00:03:23.02 It is also interesting that he makes the point that it 00:03:23.05\00:03:26.51 came through the hand of a mediator, that it was appointed 00:03:26.55\00:03:29.86 by angels, the same things Stephen said when they stoned 00:03:29.90\00:03:33.69 him, they receive the law through the direction of angels 00:03:33.72\00:03:37.48 and have not kept it. 00:03:37.51\00:03:38.68 So both the apostle Paul, Paul is just repeating the words 00:03:38.72\00:03:41.89 of Stephen who had an active part in his own conversion. 00:03:41.92\00:03:45.29 When you say that something is received from the hand of 00:03:45.32\00:03:48.66 angels you are displaying its exalted character. 00:03:48.69\00:03:52.08 If something came to the hand of angels, 00:03:52.11\00:03:53.86 you are talking about something sacred. 00:03:53.90\00:03:55.58 - that is exactly right. Then he says in verse 21, 00:03:55.62\00:03:58.68 "is the law then against" - I want to backup Jim. 00:03:58.71\00:04:01.37 I want to backup, it is interesting in my study and I 00:04:01.41\00:04:04.15 know you have done a lot of studying" in the book of 00:04:04.18\00:04:06.89 Galatians, most commentators have 00:04:06.92\00:04:09.20 a real problem with verse 20. 00:04:09.24\00:04:10.87 They say in verse 20 wall was Paul making a point of? 00:04:10.90\00:04:13.84 Then they wrestle and wrestle and I think the reason so 00:04:13.87\00:04:16.82 many people wrestle with verse 20 is because they want 00:04:16.85\00:04:19.76 to pit the law against the promises. 00:04:19.79\00:04:22.15 When you understand the reality, Paul is saying there 00:04:22.18\00:04:25.24 is look the same God who mediated the law, mediated the 00:04:25.28\00:04:28.25 promises, the same God who gave the law gave the promises, 00:04:28.29\00:04:31.22 therefore they cannot be contradictory. 00:04:31.26\00:04:32.99 They go together and go hand-in-hand so don't try to pit 00:04:33.03\00:04:37.34 them against each other and then you may understand 00:04:37.38\00:04:40.14 the truth of God. 00:04:40.17\00:04:41.49 That's right, excellent point. 00:04:41.53\00:04:43.22 In verse 21 than he begins to talk about why they are not 00:04:43.26\00:04:45.45 pitted against each other. 00:04:45.49\00:04:46.80 He asks, "is the law then against the promises of God?" 00:04:46.83\00:04:49.76 The answer is pretty strong. "Certainly not! For if 00:04:49.80\00:04:52.66 "there had been a law given which could have given life, 00:04:52.70\00:04:55.49 "truly righteousness would have been by the law. " 00:04:55.52\00:04:58.83 So here the apostle Paul is saying there is no law that 00:04:58.86\00:05:03.22 gives righteousness, that is somewhat obvious. 00:05:03.25\00:05:07.67 Righteousness is right living, it denotes life. 00:05:07.70\00:05:12.09 The law is not able to give life, only the 00:05:12.12\00:05:16.45 Life-giver can give life. 00:05:16.48\00:05:17.84 I mentioned before the break the text in Isaiah says that 00:05:17.88\00:05:21.76 God talks about those who know righteousness, speaks of 00:05:21.79\00:05:24.92 the people that know righteousness, he says, you who 00:05:24.95\00:05:28.00 know righteousness in whose people whose heart is My law. 00:05:28.04\00:05:31.98 I'd like to say that righteous- ness is right being that is 00:05:32.01\00:05:35.92 manifested in right doing. 00:05:35.95\00:05:37.76 It's not just outward it starts inwardly, but can't help 00:05:37.80\00:05:40.57 but to become outward. 00:05:40.61\00:05:42.50 1 John 3:7 says, "do not deceived, He who practices 00:05:42.54\00:05:48.45 "righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. " 00:05:48.48\00:05:52.50 There are some people who want to say righteousness is 00:05:52.53\00:05:55.99 all inward, it's always inward eye has nothing to do with 00:05:56.03\00:05:59.07 outward, but that is not true anymore than righteousness 00:05:59.10\00:06:02.10 being outward and not inward, it's both. 00:06:02.14\00:06:03.68 That's right, and you know there is something else 00:06:03.71\00:06:06.24 we discussed before is that righteousness, 00:06:06.28\00:06:08.36 when you look at the righteous- ness you can see in the law, 00:06:08.40\00:06:11.27 the law of God as it's shown is sort of like 00:06:11.31\00:06:14.94 a picture of a person. 00:06:14.97\00:06:17.84 So God's righteousness is expressed in the law sort of 00:06:17.88\00:06:23.42 the same way a picture of me expresses who I am. 00:06:23.45\00:06:27.51 Yeah you can see who I am, but the embodiment of who I am, 00:06:27.55\00:06:32.08 the fullness of who I am isn't there. 00:06:32.11\00:06:35.67 You can't get life out of that. 00:06:35.71\00:06:37.53 In the same way you can't get life out of the law. 00:06:37.56\00:06:40.01 You can only get life from a Life-giver. 00:06:40.05\00:06:42.60 So he makes the point, if there had been a law given which 00:06:42.63\00:06:45.44 could have given life, truly righteousness would have been 00:06:45.47\00:06:48.21 by the law, but there is no righteousness that can come 00:06:48.24\00:06:50.95 out of the law. 00:06:50.98\00:06:52.62 One good example of how God dealt with that is in the book 00:06:52.66\00:06:55.25 of Romans, I thought maybe we could look there together. 00:06:55.29\00:07:00.13 If you go to Romans 7, in chapter 7 you will remember from 00:07:00.16\00:07:04.93 a previous episode, we looked at verse 14 where it says, 00:07:04.97\00:07:09.68 "for we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, 00:07:09.72\00:07:14.52 "sold under sin. " So law is spiritual but I'm carnal and 00:07:14.55\00:07:18.07 we had this disconnect, we've talked about that before. 00:07:18.10\00:07:23.02 So in verse three of chapter 8, Romans 8:3 it says, 00:07:23.06\00:07:26.99 "for what the law could not do in that it was weak 00:07:27.03\00:07:30.31 "through the flesh. " We just read in Galatians the law 00:07:30.35\00:07:33.59 couldn't give life. - that's right! 00:07:33.63\00:07:35.29 Because it was weak in the flesh. 00:07:35.32\00:07:36.92 The law is spiritual, but we are carnal. - that's right! 00:07:36.95\00:07:40.29 So because the law could not give life something else had 00:07:40.32\00:07:43.53 to be done and it says what God does right after this. 00:07:43.56\00:07:46.52 "For what the law could not do in that it was weak 00:07:46.56\00:07:49.45 "through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the 00:07:49.48\00:07:52.84 "likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned 00:07:52.87\00:07:56.17 "sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law 00:07:56.21\00:07:59.56 "might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the 00:07:59.60\00:08:02.92 "flesh but according to the Spirit. " 00:08:02.95\00:08:05.70 So from God we receive the Spirit, the law can't give us 00:08:05.73\00:08:10.15 the Spirit, but God gives us His Spirit which creates 00:08:10.19\00:08:14.86 that submission to God, that crucifixion of selfishness. 00:08:14.89\00:08:18.64 I think of it in my own life, what does that look like? 00:08:18.68\00:08:22.39 For me, suddenly I had a hunger for God. 00:08:22.43\00:08:24.92 I had an interest for the things of God. 00:08:24.96\00:08:27.38 I desired to follow God, my heart was melted by the love 00:08:27.41\00:08:30.88 of Christ and suddenly my attitude towards spiritual 00:08:30.91\00:08:34.34 things changed, that is what the Spirit can do 00:08:34.38\00:08:37.01 that the law simply cannot do. 00:08:37.05\00:08:39.01 That's right, that's right and so you have this, one of 00:08:39.04\00:08:42.57 the things about the law is that it points out a condition 00:08:42.60\00:08:46.09 and it makes known to us the reality that we have no 00:08:46.13\00:08:50.16 righteousness, yet we need righteousness 00:08:50.20\00:08:52.86 if we are going to have life. 00:08:52.90\00:08:54.12 So as Paul goes on in Galatians 3:22 he says, "but the 00:08:54.15\00:08:59.73 "Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by 00:08:59.77\00:09:05.32 "faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who 00:09:05.35\00:09:07.95 "believe. But before faith came, we were kept under guard 00:09:07.98\00:09:12.12 "by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be 00:09:12.15\00:09:15.18 "revealed. " Now before when he said until the Seed should 00:09:15.21\00:09:18.21 come but now here he links faith to that. 00:09:18.24\00:09:21.32 I'm not going to comment on that but I want us to look at 00:09:21.35\00:09:23.46 the language he uses and depending on your 00:09:23.50\00:09:25.31 Bible translation, mine uses the word confined under sin. 00:09:25.34\00:09:30.55 Kept under guard by the law, I think the King James says, 00:09:30.58\00:09:35.08 shut up under sin and other translations use these similar 00:09:35.12\00:09:39.22 words, shut up, confined, kept under guard, like you are 00:09:39.25\00:09:43.31 being jailed and what the Bible is doing here. 00:09:43.35\00:09:46.10 What Paul is doing is showing the role of the law 00:09:46.13\00:09:48.85 as a disciplinarian. 00:09:48.88\00:09:51.57 In other words for the unconverted person, the law's 00:09:51.60\00:09:55.32 role our relation to the law because we are sinners, 00:09:55.35\00:09:58.26 all the law you like and do is condemn our actions. 00:09:58.29\00:10:01.13 It can't give us righteousness, it can just bear witness 00:10:01.16\00:10:04.40 to righteousness, it can show us right and wrong, but it 00:10:04.43\00:10:07.52 can't transform us because we are untransformed because 00:10:07.56\00:10:11.10 we are carnal and all the law can do is say you are carnal 00:10:11.14\00:10:14.65 you are condemned, you're on death row. 00:10:14.69\00:10:17.36 That is right. - the Bible says kept under guard by the 00:10:17.40\00:10:22.47 law for the faith which will be revealed. 00:10:22.50\00:10:25.04 So the idea is you are shut up in this prison cell and 00:10:25.08\00:10:30.13 it's an unpleasant experience until you come to the 00:10:30.16\00:10:35.17 realization that there is one door out. 00:10:35.21\00:10:37.82 - that's right, that's right and so this idea of sin, 00:10:37.86\00:10:41.32 the law revealing our sin, of course the wages of sin 00:10:41.36\00:10:44.75 is death so when the law reveals our sin it automatically 00:10:44.79\00:10:49.86 shows us we are doomed to die eternally. 00:10:49.89\00:10:53.24 So we are in this fearful mode until, like you said, 00:10:53.27\00:10:57.44 you see that the door, that door is faith coming. 00:10:57.48\00:11:01.20 Faith in what? Faith in Christ is exactly right. 00:11:01.23\00:11:04.89 Verse 23 says, "but before faith came, we were kept under 00:11:04.92\00:11:07.69 "guard by the law, For the faith which would afterward be 00:11:07.73\00:11:11.66 "revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to 00:11:11.70\00:11:15.60 "Christ, that we might be justified by faith. " 00:11:15.63\00:11:18.23 The law couldn't give us life, but it's certainly wants 00:11:18.27\00:11:21.56 us to have life. - that's right. 00:11:21.59\00:11:23.43 It says look, you are outside of My will so you are doomed 00:11:23.47\00:11:26.78 to die, the law is simply an expression of God's will. 00:11:26.81\00:11:30.78 God uses the law to show us our guilt, to give us a deep 00:11:30.82\00:11:34.75 conviction that we need Him. 00:11:34.79\00:11:36.92 That leads us to Christ. And then it says, "but after 00:11:36.96\00:11:40.14 "faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. " 00:11:40.17\00:11:44.47 So once the law fulfills its role, as a jail master, 00:11:44.50\00:11:48.73 as it were, showing us that we are outside of God's will. 00:11:48.77\00:11:52.99 We are destined to die eternally, we say oh, I need to 00:11:53.03\00:11:56.63 escape from this and we reach out by faith in Christ 00:11:56.66\00:12:00.23 and receive His sacrifice in our behalf. 00:12:00.27\00:12:03.26 We received the Spirit of God which gives us a humble 00:12:03.30\00:12:06.67 heart that now the law can recognize. 00:12:06.70\00:12:10.10 Now we do not need that law from a jail master role 00:12:10.13\00:12:13.77 anymore. - no not in the role of a disciplinarian. 00:12:13.80\00:12:17.37 Like when you're growing up as a child and your parents 00:12:17.41\00:12:20.18 tell you to do this and do that, the hope is one of 00:12:20.22\00:12:22.95 these days it will be in your heart and 00:12:22.99\00:12:25.41 you will choose to do it. 00:12:25.44\00:12:26.41 So in the will of God, before we come to Christ the law 00:12:26.42\00:12:31.67 tells us what's wrong and it's abrasive, we don't like it. 00:12:31.71\00:12:36.51 But when our heart is converted it becomes in our heart to 00:12:36.54\00:12:41.31 choose to do the things that please God. 00:12:41.34\00:12:44.21 Just like David said, now all of a sudden it is 00:12:44.24\00:12:46.05 oh how I love thy law. - that's right. 00:12:46.08\00:12:47.80 Something changes and I think of Psalms 19 were it says, 00:12:47.84\00:12:51.03 "the law of the Lord is perfect converting the soul. " 00:12:51.06\00:12:54.22 We know that only God can convert the soul. 00:12:54.26\00:12:57.02 But the Lord Jesus uses the law to lead us to Himself 00:12:57.06\00:13:02.16 that we might find a humility that brings us into 00:13:02.20\00:13:06.70 Harmony, spirituality which the law is trying 00:13:06.74\00:13:11.20 to get us to have. 00:13:11.24\00:13:12.42 So now we are desirous of keeping the law. 00:13:12.45\00:13:15.82 That is just a powerful thought. 00:13:15.85\00:13:17.56 I hope you will join us next time. 00:13:17.59\00:13:19.26
