Welcome to Books of the Book, I'm Pastor Mark Howard 00:00:22.42\00:00:25.69 of the Gobels Seventh-day Adventist church 00:00:25.73\00:00:27.81 and also director of the Emmanuel Institute of Evangelism 00:00:27.85\00:00:30.10 in the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventist. 00:00:30.14\00:00:32.16 I'm here at my brother and co-host Jim. 00:00:32.20\00:00:34.44 Yes and hello my name is Pastor Jim Howard and I am the Pastor 00:00:34.47\00:00:37.90 of the Detroit Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:37.94\00:00:40.39 and South Lyon's Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:00:40.43\00:00:42.77 We are excited to be studying the book of 00:00:42.81\00:00:44.38 Galatians with you today. 00:00:44.42\00:00:45.82 Absolutely this book is so powerful and we have talked 00:00:45.86\00:00:49.14 about the fact that the book of Galatians is the one, 00:00:49.17\00:00:52.74 probably the most concise book dealing with the subject 00:00:52.77\00:00:56.30 of the Gospel in the whole Scripture. 00:00:56.34\00:00:58.48 That is the apostle Paul's point. 00:00:58.52\00:01:00.60 False gospels have come in and he is setting forth the 00:01:00.63\00:01:03.24 true Gospel from several different angles. 00:01:03.28\00:01:05.75 What we find, especially in the book of Galatians is that 00:01:05.79\00:01:08.64 Paul is trying to give us a clear understanding of the 00:01:08.68\00:01:11.50 relation between the law of God, not only the 00:01:11.53\00:01:15.36 Ten Commandments law but the Torah, the instruction of God 00:01:15.40\00:01:18.42 with the Gospel and how the two interact together. 00:01:18.46\00:01:23.12 We have also talked about how there are people who at 00:01:23.15\00:01:27.74 a surface reading will use the book of Galatians and assume 00:01:27.78\00:01:31.49 the book of Galatians is actually talking negatively and 00:01:31.52\00:01:35.26 talking about law in a derogatively and this will be 00:01:35.30\00:01:38.53 a passage that we are looking at here today starting 00:01:38.56\00:01:41.76 in Chapter 3:10. 00:01:41.80\00:01:43.66 - were that often gets misconstrued in that way. 00:01:43.69\00:01:47.05 That's right, and the title of our study today 00:01:47.08\00:01:50.37 'The Curse of the Law' right from Galatians Chapter 3. 00:01:50.40\00:01:53.38 If you have your Bibles with you I would encourage you 00:01:53.42\00:01:56.36 to turn in them to the book of Galatians in the 00:01:56.40\00:02:00.28 New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 00:02:00.31\00:02:02.53 1 and 2 Corinthians and then Galatians. 00:02:02.57\00:02:04.62 Galatians 3:10, in Galatians 3:10 the apostle says, 00:02:04.66\00:02:09.71 "for as many as are of the works of the law are under 00:02:09.74\00:02:14.23 "the curse; for it is written, cursed is every one who 00:02:14.27\00:02:18.28 "does not continue in all things which are written in 00:02:18.31\00:02:22.28 "the book of the law, to do them. " 00:02:22.32\00:02:23.62 Now what is interesting here Jim, is that the initial 00:02:23.66\00:02:27.02 reading, as many as are the works of the law communicates 00:02:27.05\00:02:30.45 to our minds that oh those who are of the works of the 00:02:30.48\00:02:32.93 law, these are the people that think it's important to 00:02:32.96\00:02:35.38 keep the law. - right. 00:02:35.41\00:02:37.00 But we have talked about this in previous studies that 00:02:37.04\00:02:39.95 phrase, works of the law, or of the works of the law is 00:02:39.98\00:02:42.86 not saying that at all. 00:02:42.89\00:02:44.49 Those who are of the works of the law are those who are 00:02:44.53\00:02:47.40 seeking to be justified by law. 00:02:47.44\00:02:49.47 Not that they think the law of God is important, 00:02:49.51\00:02:52.93 but they think it is the means of justification. 00:02:52.96\00:02:56.31 Right and we have said that the law is not necessarily 00:02:56.35\00:02:59.39 how the text reads, but law in general. 00:02:59.43\00:03:01.94 By the works of law, so any system of righteousness 00:03:01.98\00:03:05.28 that they develop, it is not some specific code they 00:03:05.31\00:03:08.58 are trying to follow necessarily. 00:03:08.61\00:03:10.16 Any system of righteousness that they developed by 00:03:10.19\00:03:12.77 which they think they are going to merit justification. 00:03:12.81\00:03:15.86 That's right, and if we read in verse 10, I'm going to 00:03:15.89\00:03:18.91 read it how some people will read it initially. 00:03:18.95\00:03:21.15 For as many as are off the works of the law, or under the 00:03:21.19\00:03:25.37 cursed for it is written cursed is every one who continues 00:03:25.41\00:03:28.48 in all things which are written in the book of the law. 00:03:28.51\00:03:31.90 Or cursed is everyone who seeks to obey the law and that's 00:03:31.93\00:03:35.16 how people tend to read it but it's not what it says it all. 00:03:35.20\00:03:38.39 Notice the curses on those who do not continue. 00:03:38.43\00:03:42.51 "Cursed is every one who does not continue in all things 00:03:42.55\00:03:46.05 "which are written in the book of the law to do them. " 00:03:46.08\00:03:49.84 So there is a curse pronounced upon those who are of the 00:03:49.87\00:03:53.56 works of the law, these are the people who are not continuing 00:03:53.59\00:03:57.73 in the law, they are not obeying the law. 00:03:57.76\00:03:59.40 That's right and on the contrary then you go to verse 11 00:03:59.44\00:04:02.09 and it describes the other class and it says, 00:04:02.12\00:04:05.97 "but that no one is justified by the law in the sight 00:04:06.01\00:04:10.11 "of God is evident, for the just shall live by faith. " 00:04:10.14\00:04:14.10 And we talked last time that the only way to truly have 00:04:14.13\00:04:17.75 obedience, the kind of obedience where your heart is in 00:04:17.79\00:04:21.37 tune with the will of God. 00:04:21.41\00:04:23.08 Where you are submissive to God, where that humble 00:04:23.11\00:04:26.17 attitude of trust in God is evident, it's to have faith. 00:04:26.20\00:04:30.38 We look back at Romans 3:31 where it says, 00:04:30.42\00:04:34.25 "by faith we establish the law. " 00:04:34.28\00:04:36.95 So those who are of the works of law, they don't continue 00:04:36.99\00:04:40.65 in the things of the law. 00:04:40.69\00:04:42.19 Those who live by faith are just, that is they establish 00:04:42.22\00:04:47.68 the law. - that's right, by the grace of God. 00:04:47.72\00:04:50.03 It is the only way the law can be established in the 00:04:50.06\00:04:52.79 human heart and so this is where in verse 13 Paul says, 00:04:52.83\00:04:55.53 "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, 00:04:55.56\00:04:58.73 "having become a curse for us (for it is written, 00:04:58.76\00:05:01.97 "cursed is every one who hangs on a tree), that the 00:05:02.01\00:05:04.98 "blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in 00:05:05.02\00:05:07.56 "Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise 00:05:07.60\00:05:10.11 "of the Spirit through faith. " 00:05:10.15\00:05:12.17 So the point here that needs to be clear in our minds is 00:05:12.20\00:05:14.74 Christ did not come to redeem anybody from the law, 00:05:14.77\00:05:17.73 but from the curse of the law. - that's right! 00:05:17.76\00:05:20.29 The curse of the law is the curse against disobedience 00:05:20.33\00:05:23.80 or sin. - that's right, when you look at it, verse 13 00:05:23.83\00:05:27.54 tells us that Christ redeems us from the curse of the law 00:05:27.57\00:05:31.32 that is He redeem those from the curse of disobeying the 00:05:31.36\00:05:35.07 law by being crucified. 00:05:35.11\00:05:37.81 Because this is cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree. 00:05:37.85\00:05:41.68 So He took our guilt, our punishment for disobedience 00:05:41.72\00:05:45.52 to the law, in essence that's what it's saying. 00:05:45.55\00:05:47.95 Then in verse 14 it says, "that the blessing of Abraham 00:05:47.99\00:05:50.66 "might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we 00:05:50.70\00:05:53.32 "might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. " 00:05:53.35\00:05:56.43 First He redeems us from the curse of disobedience to the 00:05:56.47\00:06:00.11 law, then He gives us the Spirit which writes the law on 00:06:00.15\00:06:03.84 our hearts and He in essence gives us an obedient heart. 00:06:03.87\00:06:07.89 He dies for our disobedience and implants in our hearts 00:06:07.93\00:06:11.39 something that wasn't there before, a heart of obedience. 00:06:11.42\00:06:14.98 I think this is so important for our readers, our viewers 00:06:15.02\00:06:18.71 to grasp here, then again those who are of the works of 00:06:18.75\00:06:22.41 the law are the people who are not obeying God, 00:06:22.44\00:06:25.67 but who disobey because if man is attempting 00:06:25.70\00:06:28.86 in his own strength, to keep his own idea of right, 00:06:28.89\00:06:32.47 let me rephrase what I mean by that. 00:06:32.50\00:06:35.49 If I look at the law of God I deduce from it what is 00:06:35.52\00:06:39.83 right and what is wrong, I'm still only viewing it from 00:06:39.87\00:06:44.15 my limited understanding for example. 00:06:44.18\00:06:46.39 How many times have you thought you were living right, 00:06:46.42\00:06:49.62 or doing right or whatever and then you learn something 00:06:49.65\00:06:52.82 new that you didn't know before? 00:06:52.85\00:06:54.86 Lots of times. - yeah, so if I live up to my highest 00:06:54.89\00:06:58.30 conception of righteousness today, my highest ideal of 00:06:58.34\00:07:01.71 what is right, is that going to be right? 00:07:01.75\00:07:05.36 Not necessarily. -No! Tomorrow I might learn something 00:07:05.40\00:07:08.34 new and the next day something new. 00:07:08.38\00:07:09.80 So for man to think that he can even conceptualize 00:07:09.84\00:07:12.49 righteousness is a futility. 00:07:12.52\00:07:18.47 The Lord Himself only knows righteousness and that is 00:07:18.50\00:07:22.36 why the Bible says in Isaiah where the Lord talks about 00:07:22.39\00:07:25.72 those who know righteousness and He says the people in 00:07:25.75\00:07:29.04 whose heart is My law. 00:07:29.08\00:07:31.31 It's the only way to know true righteousness. 00:07:31.34\00:07:33.90 So those were the works of the law they are under the 00:07:33.94\00:07:36.87 curse, it can't be otherwise, you could never meet 00:07:36.91\00:07:39.81 the standard of God in human strength. 00:07:39.84\00:07:42.83 The greatest reason is because those who are seeking 00:07:42.86\00:07:46.97 to be justified by the works of the law are not 00:07:47.01\00:07:50.60 going to Christ for justification. 00:07:50.64\00:07:52.58 So they are not receiving a divine nature, all they have 00:07:52.61\00:07:55.90 to work with is the flesh, the selfish heart. 00:07:55.93\00:07:58.91 So they can do things but even the things they do are 00:07:58.95\00:08:01.22 going to be from a selfish motive. 00:08:01.26\00:08:03.16 They are probably only going to pick and choose certain 00:08:03.20\00:08:05.19 things because the reality is their heart is not 00:08:05.22\00:08:08.34 submissive as we read in Romans 8:7 where it says, 00:08:08.37\00:08:11.58 that our carnal mind, our sinful heart is not subject 00:08:11.61\00:08:14.79 to the law and it can't be made that way. 00:08:14.82\00:08:16.67 We have to have Christ to give us something from above 00:08:16.70\00:08:20.30 the Spirit of God even, to give us that humble spirit 00:08:20.33\00:08:23.90 that is willing to obey God. 00:08:23.93\00:08:25.34 That's right, and that is where the concept goes on as 00:08:25.37\00:08:28.85 Paul continues to talk and we are going to Galatians 3:16 00:08:28.88\00:08:32.33 and notice what he says here. 00:08:32.36\00:08:33.51 "Now to Abraham and his Seed where the promises made. " 00:08:33.54\00:08:37.75 "He does not say unto seeds as of many, but as of one, 00:08:37.78\00:08:41.96 "and to your Seed, who is Christ. " 00:08:41.99\00:08:43.95 We are going to talk more about the Seed of Abraham I 00:08:43.98\00:08:45.62 believe next time, but it says in verse 17, 00:08:45.66\00:08:48.50 "and this I say, that the law, which was 430 years later 00:08:48.53\00:08:52.25 "cannot annul the covenant" now it he's talking here 00:08:52.28\00:08:55.96 about the giving of the law, not just the 00:08:56.00\00:08:57.24 Ten Commandments, but also the ceremonial laws that 00:08:57.27\00:08:59.95 were given at Sinai and he was referring to that event. 00:08:59.99\00:09:03.54 He said that, "which was 430 years later can not annul 00:09:03.57\00:09:07.18 "the covenant that was confirmed before by God, in Christ, 00:09:07.22\00:09:10.80 "then it should make the promise of no effect. " 00:09:10.83\00:09:13.44 Now the point the apostle was trying to make here is 00:09:13.48\00:09:16.32 the same God who gave the promise of salvation in Christ, 00:09:16.35\00:09:20.77 gave the law, and I would ask those who have been 00:09:20.81\00:09:24.54 wrestling with this and thought about the law as still 00:09:24.58\00:09:27.43 binding upon Christians and should we still keep the 00:09:27.46\00:09:30.80 Ten Commandment law, the question to ask would be 00:09:30.84\00:09:34.11 because the thought that comes in here is didn't Jesus 00:09:34.14\00:09:37.29 did Jesus die so we can be free from a law? 00:09:37.32\00:09:40.49 We have talked about this before. 00:09:40.53\00:09:41.51 But we have to ask ourselves who was it who gave the 00:09:41.55\00:09:44.38 Ten Commandment law again? - it was God. 00:09:44.41\00:09:46.65 You know a dear friend of mine, Dan Griffin always said 00:09:46.68\00:09:49.94 that there is one word that God never uses, one word 00:09:49.98\00:09:53.20 God never says, and that word is oops! 00:09:53.24\00:09:55.30 - that's right. - God wasn't up there giving a law 00:09:55.33\00:09:58.48 and oops I made a mistake, I shouldn't have given that 00:09:58.51\00:10:01.93 law, so all the apostle is saying here is the same God 00:10:01.97\00:10:05.35 who gave salvation in His Son, Jesus Christ 00:10:05.38\00:10:08.25 also gave the law. 00:10:08.29\00:10:09.64 Well He wouldn't give us a law that contradicted 00:10:09.67\00:10:12.01 His own promise. - that's right! 00:10:12.05\00:10:13.64 So rather than the law being contradictory to salvation, 00:10:13.67\00:10:17.16 if we find ourselves as Christians battling on one side 00:10:17.19\00:10:21.00 of this issue verses another saying, I'm for the Gospel, 00:10:21.03\00:10:24.81 or I'm for the law we are mixed up. 00:10:24.84\00:10:27.44 The same God that gave law gave the Gospel. 00:10:27.47\00:10:30.32 The same God who gave the Gospel gave the law and they 00:10:30.35\00:10:32.66 are not working to counter purposes but are working 00:10:32.70\00:10:34.98 together. - you know that's right. 00:10:35.01\00:10:36.34 You know I think about when Jesus was talking to the 00:10:36.37\00:10:38.82 Pharisees and He said you tithed mint and anise and Cumin 00:10:38.85\00:10:42.91 but you neglect the weightier matters of the law. 00:10:42.95\00:10:45.49 Justice and mercy and faith. 00:10:45.52\00:10:47.72 A lot of people when they read Galatians, they think this 00:10:47.76\00:10:52.48 is really attacking these people who are so focused on 00:10:52.52\00:10:57.15 carefully obeying these rules and requirements, but the 00:10:57.18\00:11:00.87 reality is that we have to be careful not to throw the 00:11:00.90\00:11:04.55 baby out with the bath water. - that's right! 00:11:04.58\00:11:06.28 If you look at the example of Jesus He is saying it's 00:11:06.32\00:11:10.75 okay to pay this tithe but don't neglect 00:11:10.78\00:11:14.18 the weightier matters of law. 00:11:14.21\00:11:16.05 It is not obeying the law to keep these external requirements 00:11:16.08\00:11:21.43 if you are bitter and angry in your heart. 00:11:21.47\00:11:24.14 It is not obeying the law if you are critical of others 00:11:24.18\00:11:27.57 because they are not obeying the law. 00:11:27.60\00:11:29.26 That is not obeying the law. - that's right. 00:11:29.30\00:11:30.79 That is about all our stubborn or can do, that is not 00:11:30.83\00:11:33.16 obeying the law, we need something deeper. 00:11:33.20\00:11:35.99 Just because we need a more warm Spirit, just because 00:11:36.02\00:11:39.85 we need that mercy and compassion of God is no reason 00:11:39.88\00:11:43.40 to say because that is the weightier matter of the law 00:11:43.43\00:11:47.23 we don't need to do anything from an external observant 00:11:47.27\00:11:51.04 standpoint that God asked us to do. 00:11:51.07\00:11:52.63 We can't throw away the one to make room for the other. 00:11:52.66\00:11:55.78 We have to look at it as a perfect whole. 00:11:55.81\00:11:57.74 When you talk about throwing away this example comes to 00:11:57.77\00:12:01.18 mind, when Paul talks about the law he repeatedly says 00:12:01.21\00:12:04.58 that man can't be justified by the law. 00:12:04.61\00:12:07.12 By the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. 00:12:07.15\00:12:09.23 What that does is that it triggers the mine of some people 00:12:09.27\00:12:12.09 the idea that there is no purpose for the law. 00:12:12.13\00:12:13.91 For example, my wife and I received this beautiful ceramic 00:12:13.95\00:12:19.58 fruit bowl from some friends of ours that had went 00:12:19.62\00:12:22.05 overseas and brought this back. 00:12:22.09\00:12:23.60 So we have this beautiful fruit bowl on our counter at 00:12:23.63\00:12:27.49 home, now let's imagine one day I'm coming through the 00:12:27.53\00:12:30.40 kitchen and heading out to the garage and take that fruit 00:12:30.43\00:12:32.90 bowl, take the fruit out and began to walk out to the 00:12:32.94\00:12:35.37 garage and my wife says honey hold on a minute. 00:12:35.41\00:12:36.94 Where are you going with the fruit bowl? 00:12:36.97\00:12:39.25 Oh I'm just going out to change the oil. 00:12:39.28\00:12:41.49 She says you're doing what? I'm going to change the oil 00:12:41.52\00:12:46.12 don't worry I'll bring it back. 00:12:46.15\00:12:47.71 She says no you are not going anywhere to do any such 00:12:47.74\00:12:50.72 thing with that fruit bowl you put it right back here. 00:12:50.75\00:12:53.69 - I know Stephanie she wouldn't speak that way. 00:12:53.73\00:12:56.54 No, no she would speak that way but she might still say 00:12:56.58\00:12:59.89 that, so she says you are not going anywhere with that. 00:12:59.92\00:13:03.20 You can't change oil in that fruit bowl 00:13:03.23\00:13:06.80 that's not what it's for. 00:13:06.83\00:13:08.41 Let's imagine if my response is oh well if that's not 00:13:08.45\00:13:11.51 what it is for what good is it and I chuck the thing in 00:13:11.54\00:13:14.56 the trash can, that wouldn't go over real well. 00:13:14.60\00:13:17.70 Okay, I think you husbands at home can relate to that. 00:13:17.73\00:13:20.56 Here's the idea, that is the very thing that some 00:13:20.60\00:13:24.21 Christians do with the law of God. 00:13:24.24\00:13:26.28 When Paul says you can't justify, a law can't justify 00:13:26.31\00:13:29.11 they say what good is it in chuck it in the trash can. 00:13:29.14\00:13:32.41 The reality is, was there a purpose for that fruit bowl? 00:13:32.45\00:13:35.69 - yes there was. - absolutely. 00:13:35.72\00:13:37.39 There was a purpose it just wasn't for changing the oil. 00:13:37.43\00:13:39.82 There is a purpose for the law of God, it's simply not 00:13:39.86\00:13:42.58 to be justified with, but it does serve a purpose. 00:13:42.61\00:13:45.26 We are going to talk about that purpose well we come back 00:13:45.29\00:13:47.66 from our break, so stay tuned and stick with us. 00:13:47.70\00:13:51.63 When we come back we're going to talk about the purpose 00:13:51.67\00:13:53.62 of the law in the life of the Christian. 00:13:53.65\00:13:55.49
