Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:05.53\00:00:07.63 We have been in the book of Galatians and we are studying 00:00:07.67\00:00:09.52 about the hearing of faith. 00:00:09.56\00:00:11.54 In Galatians 3 the apostle Paul talks about how the 00:00:11.57\00:00:15.25 Galatians had been obedient while they had the hearing of 00:00:15.29\00:00:18.45 faith but they turned from that to the works of the law. 00:00:18.49\00:00:21.62 Jim you had said before the break where you went to 00:00:21.65\00:00:26.80 Romans 23:23 where it's said the faith establishes a law. 00:00:26.83\00:00:30.59 Now I want us to look at an interesting passage in 00:00:30.63\00:00:32.90 the book of Romans 1:5. 00:00:32.93\00:00:36.27 It depends on which translation that you are reading 00:00:36.30\00:00:39.96 whether you will pick it up right away, but the language 00:00:39.99\00:00:43.07 of this is very interesting in the original language and 00:00:43.10\00:00:46.14 it is expressed in different versions. 00:00:46.18\00:00:47.83 I'm reading in the new King James Romans 1:5 and the 00:00:47.87\00:00:50.60 apostle Paul is talking about the Gospel of Christ and in 00:00:50.63\00:00:53.51 verse five he says, "through him" speaking of Jesus, 00:00:53.54\00:00:56.04 " we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to 00:00:56.07\00:01:00.55 "the faith among all nations for His name, among whom 00:01:00.59\00:01:04.78 "you also are the called of Jesus Christ;" and he goes on. 00:01:04.81\00:01:08.96 Now what this translation does not bring out, 00:01:09.00\00:01:12.39 but for example if you were to read it in the King James 00:01:12.43\00:01:16.31 Version or in the English Standard Version for example 00:01:16.34\00:01:20.19 it says, "for the obedience of faith. " 00:01:20.22\00:01:24.95 The NIV says, the NIV actually says, 00:01:24.99\00:01:29.64 the obedience that comes from faith, and that is 00:01:29.68\00:01:33.38 the sense that is given in the original. 00:01:33.41\00:01:34.72 So the idea being conveyed from the apostle there is 00:01:34.75\00:01:40.06 that obedience is a result of faith, that actually faith 00:01:40.09\00:01:45.37 exercising your faith is obedience. 00:01:45.40\00:01:48.53 Obedience is simply the exercise of faith. 00:01:48.56\00:01:50.20 Right, so obedience is evidence of faith, true obedience 00:01:50.23\00:01:53.17 that goes from the inside and finds its way into your 00:01:53.20\00:01:55.61 outer life. - that's right it is true there is an 00:01:55.65\00:01:57.98 outward obedience that you can render from the heart of 00:01:58.02\00:02:00.68 Bible faith is a living principle in the life 00:02:00.71\00:02:04.86 of a Christian that responds to God. 00:02:04.90\00:02:07.95 That is right, that is right Amen. 00:02:07.99\00:02:10.97 Well it makes me think about, when you talk about the 00:02:11.00\00:02:14.45 hearing of faith in Romans chapter 10. 00:02:14.49\00:02:17.00 Because in Romans 10:17 it says "that faith comes by 00:02:17.04\00:02:20.56 "hearing and hearing by the word of God. " 00:02:20.59\00:02:24.14 The component of faith that we need to remember is that 00:02:24.18\00:02:27.49 a lot of talk about how I have faith. 00:02:27.52\00:02:29.48 I'm a person of faith, but if we just have faith meaning 00:02:29.52\00:02:33.96 we believe certain things about God, if we do certain 00:02:34.00\00:02:37.23 things because we think it is what would be the right 00:02:37.27\00:02:40.47 thing to do, that is not necessarily faith. 00:02:40.51\00:02:42.76 Faith is responding to the word and if we want faith 00:02:42.79\00:02:46.59 we have to be in the word. 00:02:46.63\00:02:48.34 We have to understand the word, to see the God that is 00:02:48.38\00:02:51.95 revealed through the word and that is ultimately what 00:02:51.99\00:02:55.53 gives us the faith. 00:02:55.57\00:02:57.79 Faith exercised it's believing in the promises of God 00:02:57.82\00:03:01.20 and responding to them. 00:03:01.24\00:03:02.47 Now there is another aspect of faith that we need to 00:03:02.51\00:03:04.76 look at too and I thought maybe we can look at it in 00:03:04.80\00:03:09.54 Hebrews 11:6 it says something very interesting about 00:03:09.57\00:03:14.20 Faith. It says, "but without faith it is impossible 00:03:14.23\00:03:18.79 to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that 00:03:18.82\00:03:22.85 He is, and that He is a rewarder of those of 00:03:22.89\00:03:26.53 who diligently seek Him. " 00:03:26.57\00:03:28.21 Now this is a very powerful verse that helps us to 00:03:28.25\00:03:33.33 understand that God wants us to diligently seek Him. 00:03:33.36\00:03:38.41 If we diligently seek Him, He will reward us. 00:03:38.45\00:03:42.48 Faith is believing that God will reward you when 00:03:42.52\00:03:46.37 you diligently seek Him, not halfheartedly but if 00:03:46.41\00:03:49.92 we put our heart into it, that is what faith requires 00:03:49.95\00:03:53.43 then we will find Him. 00:03:53.47\00:03:55.06 You do remember Jeremiah says that. 00:03:55.09\00:03:57.78 If you seek Me you will find Me when you search for Me 00:03:57.81\00:04:00.38 with all your heart. 00:04:00.41\00:04:01.78 So we have to recognize that faith isn't something that 00:04:01.81\00:04:04.18 just comes easy or naturally per se. 00:04:04.22\00:04:07.64 Faith always has obstacles, in fact if something is 00:04:07.67\00:04:11.61 humanly possible and seems very easy humanly, 00:04:11.65\00:04:14.63 it doesn't require faith. 00:04:14.66\00:04:16.14 Faith is always something that we have a principle 00:04:16.18\00:04:19.32 that overcomes obstacles. 00:04:19.36\00:04:22.02 Faith is believing that God can overcome the 00:04:22.05\00:04:24.96 impossibilities of life and the reality Jim is that 00:04:24.99\00:04:28.39 faith only exist in the realm of the impossible. 00:04:28.43\00:04:31.76 If you are in the realm of the possible what is faith 00:04:31.79\00:04:34.84 needed for? You could see everything but the Bible says 00:04:34.88\00:04:37.98 we walk by faith and not by sight, it contrasts the two. 00:04:38.01\00:04:41.54 So faith is dependent on those impossible situations and 00:04:41.58\00:04:44.51 the problem I think is that there are too many Christians 00:04:44.54\00:04:47.44 who want to live in the realm of the possible. 00:04:47.47\00:04:50.05 That is where we find the rub with the law of God because 00:04:50.09\00:04:53.29 when you put the law of God is an impossibility for man, 00:04:53.32\00:04:56.73 unless he has the power of God, and it becomes a rub for 00:04:56.77\00:05:00.15 those who do not want to receive that new birth 00:05:00.18\00:05:03.79 experience. They want to have their proverbial cake 00:05:03.82\00:05:06.87 and eat it too. 00:05:06.90\00:05:08.12 If I might say it, what they are doing is they are 00:05:08.16\00:05:12.14 living in, what we call, a comfort zone. 00:05:12.17\00:05:14.05 So many Christians they live in a comfort zone even though 00:05:14.09\00:05:18.43 God may be calling them to this variety of areas, 00:05:18.46\00:05:21.81 if they have weaknesses in these areas they will avoid 00:05:21.85\00:05:23.87 them and stay within their comfort zone. 00:05:23.90\00:05:26.38 That is what the works of the law also mentally does. 00:05:26.42\00:05:28.74 It causes us to feel confident in that we are okay with 00:05:28.77\00:05:31.06 this and that substitutes for that. 00:05:31.10\00:05:33.83 So we need to be able to see that those impossible areas 00:05:33.86\00:05:37.42 that God is calling us in, those are the ones that 00:05:37.45\00:05:40.24 test and require faith. 00:05:40.27\00:05:42.61 I can think of some Bible examples when you really look 00:05:42.65\00:05:45.40 at the life of Christ you see it full of examples of 00:05:45.43\00:05:48.15 living faith and I'm thinking of one right now 00:05:48.19\00:05:51.52 with the paralytic. 00:05:51.55\00:05:53.10 You remember there was a paralytic where four friends 00:05:53.13\00:05:56.49 took him to Jesus for him to be healed. 00:05:56.52\00:05:59.41 When they got to the house where Jesus was, it was full 00:05:59.45\00:06:03.40 of people, there was the obstacle. 00:06:03.43\00:06:05.73 They could have just turned around and gone home, 00:06:05.76\00:06:08.00 but they climbed up on the Roof, they tore up the tiles, 00:06:08.04\00:06:12.99 sounds pretty radical. 00:06:13.03\00:06:14.80 They tore the tiles of the roof and they lowered 00:06:14.84\00:06:17.55 him down and the Bible said when Jesus saw their faith, 00:06:17.58\00:06:21.96 how was it that He saw their faith? 00:06:22.00\00:06:23.73 Jesus saw that they had such confidence in Him that they 00:06:23.76\00:06:27.59 were not going to let any obstacle stand in their way. 00:06:27.62\00:06:31.42 They were going to go straight to Jesus. 00:06:31.45\00:06:32.97 Then there is the story that comes to mind of blind 00:06:33.01\00:06:34.95 Bartimaeus, here is a man who was on the side of the road 00:06:34.99\00:06:37.74 and he is crying out, he hears Jesus coming his way. 00:06:37.78\00:06:41.13 He said son of David have mercy on me and the crowd 00:06:41.16\00:06:44.48 tells him to pipe down. 00:06:44.51\00:06:45.81 The Christian crowd tells him to pipe down because he is 00:06:45.84\00:06:49.34 making too much noise and so there you have the obstacle. 00:06:49.37\00:06:52.29 Here he is a blind man and he doesn't know how to get 00:06:52.32\00:06:55.20 to where he is going. 00:06:55.24\00:06:56.21 He has this crowd milling around, but when they tell him 00:06:56.22\00:06:58.37 to be quiet the Bible says he cries all the more. 00:06:58.41\00:07:02.90 When he cried all the more and pushed beyond that barrier 00:07:02.93\00:07:06.45 then we see his Faith rewarded in Jesus and He heals him. 00:07:06.49\00:07:09.98 We see a similar story with Zacchaeus. 00:07:10.01\00:07:12.03 Zacchaeus wants to see Jesus and the Christian crowd 00:07:12.07\00:07:15.56 around Jesus was too tall and some people say it is 00:07:15.59\00:07:18.53 Zacchaeus could not see Jesus and so what does he do? 00:07:18.57\00:07:20.89 - he could have gone home. - he could have gone home 00:07:20.92\00:07:23.08 it said there was no way I will ever be able to make it 00:07:23.11\00:07:26.07 to Jesus, but instead he presses through and goes ahead 00:07:26.11\00:07:29.41 actually gets himself up in a tree so he could just 00:07:29.44\00:07:32.71 happen to see Jesus come by. 00:07:32.75\00:07:34.70 And Jesus sees his act of faith and calls him down and 00:07:34.74\00:07:38.69 says this day salvation has come to your house. 00:07:38.72\00:07:41.55 Amen, I can think of the story to a woman who had a flow 00:07:41.58\00:07:46.75 of blood, for all she had she tried to find healing. 00:07:46.79\00:07:51.93 She went to every physician she could find and 00:07:51.96\00:07:54.32 she spent all her livelihood and still nothing. 00:07:54.36\00:07:56.55 Well she heard that Jesus was coming through town. 00:07:56.59\00:07:59.66 Jesus was her only hope and she went to see Jesus and 00:07:59.70\00:08:02.74 guess what she ran into? An obstacle! 00:08:02.78\00:08:04.82 The crowd was too big and she couldn't get to Him. 00:08:04.85\00:08:07.54 She thought to herself if I can only fight through and 00:08:07.57\00:08:10.22 reach the hem of His garment I will be healed. 00:08:10.25\00:08:12.61 So she reaches the end and grabs the hem of His garment 00:08:12.64\00:08:14.83 and Jesus stops on the spot and He says, 00:08:14.87\00:08:17.37 who touched Me? Of course the disciples were like 00:08:17.41\00:08:20.23 what are you talking about? Everybody's touching and 00:08:20.26\00:08:23.05 they are bumping up against you. 00:08:23.08\00:08:25.39 He said no I perceived virtue gone out for Me. 00:08:25.43\00:08:29.15 Who touched Me? That is a real good lesson for us. 00:08:29.18\00:08:32.83 If we have a casual experience where we just bump up next to 00:08:32.87\00:08:37.72 Jesus, we go to church and put in our time but we are not in 00:08:37.75\00:08:42.57 earnest and not we're not wholehearted like that woman. 00:08:42.61\00:08:46.27 If we do not have that kind of faith, then Jesus doesn't 00:08:46.31\00:08:50.06 recognize it, Jesus knows the difference between an 00:08:50.09\00:08:53.78 intentional wholehearted faith, a casual halfhearted experience. 00:08:53.81\00:08:58.55 That is absolutely true and it reminds me that we all face 00:08:58.59\00:09:02.19 those situations where if we truly give ourselves to Christ 00:09:02.22\00:09:05.39 we face obstacles, sometimes they are impractical situations. 00:09:05.43\00:09:08.56 I remember when I first became a Christian. 00:09:08.59\00:09:11.33 The Holy Spirit came to my heart and convicted me of something 00:09:11.37\00:09:15.09 I had stole from my employer prior to becoming a Christian. 00:09:15.12\00:09:18.39 I was convicted that I needed to go and tell my employer and 00:09:18.43\00:09:22.61 I was so petrified because it was a fairly expensive item and 00:09:22.64\00:09:26.79 I could lose my job and I knew I'd lose my job. 00:09:26.82\00:09:28.71 And I thought Lord, this was before I was a Christian 00:09:28.74\00:09:30.59 I confessed all that, I'm newborn, why couldn't 00:09:30.63\00:09:33.12 I've done it before, now it is going to ruin my witness 00:09:33.15\00:09:36.35 in all these things but the conviction was there. 00:09:36.39\00:09:38.97 I knew it was something I had to go and make it right, 00:09:39.01\00:09:41.93 despite the obstacle and I'll tell you what, when I did. 00:09:41.97\00:09:44.82 I went and talked my employer about that thing because I knew 00:09:44.85\00:09:47.65 it was the right thing to do and I did it for the sake of the 00:09:47.68\00:09:50.45 Lord that I gave my life to. 00:09:50.48\00:09:52.45 God worked that out with my employer, not only did I not 00:09:52.48\00:09:56.65 lose my job but he was impressed with the level of 00:09:56.69\00:10:01.28 integrity that he saw from me willing to able to something 00:10:01.31\00:10:04.57 because I had gotten away with it. 00:10:04.60\00:10:06.16 So at any rate I had fought, I had seen the obstacles and 00:10:06.20\00:10:10.41 made them bigger than they really were, but the Lord 00:10:10.45\00:10:12.83 carried me through when I exercised faith. 00:10:12.86\00:10:14.85 He compelled you by His grace and you had turmoil but when 00:10:14.88\00:10:19.15 you received His grace by faith you received peace. 00:10:19.18\00:10:22.85 Grace and peace is in harmony with God and there is nothing 00:10:22.88\00:10:26.40 like overcoming that sin or obstacle and finding peace. 00:10:26.43\00:10:29.29 There may be somebody watching today, and you have got 00:10:29.32\00:10:31.89 something that you know God is calling on you to do. 00:10:31.92\00:10:34.42 But you are struggling with how you are ever going to do it. 00:10:34.45\00:10:37.67 Perhaps you learned you should return a faithful tithe to God. 00:10:37.71\00:10:40.90 You are thinking to yourself I have expenses and 00:10:40.93\00:10:44.02 there is no way I can overcome. 00:10:44.05\00:10:45.70 I have a family situation that requires more than I can do. 00:10:45.73\00:10:50.06 You are thinking that would be impossible, that is when faith 00:10:50.09\00:10:54.38 comes in, faith is not needed for that which is easy. 00:10:54.42\00:10:57.58 Faith is only needed for that which is seemingly impossible. 00:10:57.61\00:11:01.87 So God is calling on us to be faithful, to obey when it seems 00:11:01.90\00:11:06.12 impossible and that is the exercise of faith. 00:11:06.16\00:11:08.72 To obey and trust God when it seems impossible. 00:11:08.75\00:11:11.24 There could be somebody who has learned that the Seventh 00:11:11.28\00:11:14.39 Day Sabbath is something that is still valid for Christians. 00:11:14.42\00:11:17.49 They are thinking but I've got this work situation 00:11:17.53\00:11:19.95 I have to figure out. 00:11:19.98\00:11:21.48 I have too many barriers that couldn't possibly be 00:11:21.52\00:11:26.80 overcome, the same situation, faith is when we trust that if 00:11:26.84\00:11:31.27 God is asking us to do it. God will honor us if we honor Him. 00:11:31.30\00:11:36.15 If we obey God He will honor us. 00:11:36.19\00:11:39.20 That is right and we could go to Hebrews chapter 11, the faith. 00:11:39.23\00:11:42.75 Chapter and one fascinating thing about it is over and 00:11:42.79\00:11:46.18 over, I'll give you a few examples Hebrews 11:8. 00:11:46.22\00:11:48.60 It says, "by faith Abraham obeyed. " 00:11:48.64\00:11:51.57 You go ahead to verse 17 and it says, 00:11:51.61\00:11:54.47 "by faith Abraham - offered up his son Isaac.
