Welcome to another episode of Books of the Book. 00:00:22.43\00:00:25.35 My name is Pastor Mark Howard I am the director of 00:00:25.39\00:00:28.10 the Emmanuel Institute of Evangelism in Michigan. 00:00:28.13\00:00:30.67 For the Michigan Conference Seventh-day Adventist 00:00:30.71\00:00:32.81 as well as the Pastor of the Gobels Seventh-day 00:00:32.85\00:00:34.84 Adventist church and I am here with my co-host, 00:00:34.87\00:00:36.83 my brother Jim. 00:00:36.86\00:00:38.24 Hi my name is Jim Howard and I am the Pastor of the 00:00:38.27\00:00:40.79 Detroit Metropolitan and South Lyon Seventh-day 00:00:40.83\00:00:42.87 Adventist churches and I'm glad to be here. 00:00:42.90\00:00:44.88 Will we have been studying in the book of Galatians 00:00:44.91\00:00:48.38 and what is happening here is that this church in 00:00:48.41\00:00:51.41 Galatia is a church of the apostle Paul raised up 00:00:51.45\00:00:54.45 and somebody else came in and began to preach a false 00:00:54.48\00:00:57.81 Gospel that really turned the church upside down. 00:00:57.84\00:01:00.91 The apostle has come in to address the situation. 00:01:00.95\00:01:04.02 We are in Galatians Chapter 3 today and we are going 00:01:04.05\00:01:06.81 to begin there Galatians to 3:1 so if you have your 00:01:06.85\00:01:09.22 Bibles I would encourage you to jump in here with us. 00:01:09.25\00:01:12.10 The New Testament after the Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, 00:01:12.13\00:01:15.52 John, Acts, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, and then Galatians. 00:01:15.56\00:01:18.91 Galatians 3:1 and the apostle starts out here and says, 00:01:18.95\00:01:24.50 "O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you 00:01:24.53\00:01:29.13 "should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus 00:01:29.17\00:01:33.02 "Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? 00:01:33.06\00:01:36.74 "This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive 00:01:36.78\00:01:39.91 "the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing 00:01:39.94\00:01:43.46 "of faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the 00:01:43.50\00:01:47.15 "Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? 00:01:47.18\00:01:50.33 "Have you suffered so many things in vain? if indeed 00:01:50.36\00:01:53.53 "it was in vain? Therefore he who supplies the Spirit 00:01:53.56\00:01:56.74 "to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by 00:01:56.77\00:01:59.93 "the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 00:01:59.97\00:02:02.87 just as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to 00:02:02.91\00:02:05.78 "him for righteousness. " 00:02:05.81\00:02:07.17 Not something we want to grasp here which is 00:02:07.21\00:02:09.80 interesting Jim, he brings it up 2 times. 00:02:09.84\00:02:12.36 This problem in Galatia came in, in what he calls the 00:02:12.40\00:02:20.25 hearing of faith was interrupted. 00:02:20.28\00:02:21.93 In verse 1 there it says, that they had obeyed the truth 00:02:21.96\00:02:27.01 but they had stopped obeying the truths when the hearing 00:02:27.04\00:02:32.05 of faith had stopped. 00:02:32.09\00:02:33.76 - they had switched to the works of law 00:02:33.79\00:02:35.53 as a means of justification. 00:02:35.57\00:02:36.72 I know for our viewers, if our viewers are reading 00:02:36.76\00:02:38.55 in the New King James Version, but if you are reading 00:02:38.59\00:02:40.59 in a version like the English Standard Version, the 00:02:40.63\00:02:42.83 New International Version, or some others it cuts off 00:02:42.86\00:02:46.06 that last part where it will read basically who has 00:02:46.09\00:02:49.22 bewitched you and it doesn't say you should not obey the truth. 00:02:49.25\00:02:53.14 So we picked the same idea up in Galatians 5 where the 00:02:53.18\00:02:56.52 apostle makes the same point again as it is in that 00:02:56.55\00:02:59.86 translation or those translations I mentioned. 00:02:59.90\00:03:03.17 Galatians 5:7 notice what he says, "you ran well. " 00:03:03.20\00:03:06.55 Past tense. You had been faithful, you ran well, but 00:03:06.58\00:03:10.36 he says, "who hindered you from obeying the truth?" 00:03:10.39\00:03:13.81 So the point were wanting to pick up on here is there 00:03:13.85\00:03:17.24 is something about this hearing of faith. 00:03:17.27\00:03:19.31 We are going to be talking about this today about what 00:03:19.35\00:03:20.95 the hearing of faith is. 00:03:20.99\00:03:22.41 While the people possess the hearing of faith, they were 00:03:22.44\00:03:26.87 obedient to the truth. 00:03:26.91\00:03:28.11 But when they lost the hearing of faith and began to turn 00:03:28.15\00:03:32.26 to the works of the law, they actually became disobedient. 00:03:32.30\00:03:35.75 Which is interesting. - it's just the opposite of what 00:03:35.79\00:03:38.28 you would think because when you think about the works of 00:03:38.32\00:03:42.20 the law, you think law, obedience and you think of the 00:03:42.24\00:03:45.65 focus not on faith but on obedience. - that's right! 00:03:45.68\00:03:49.02 The reality is that according to the epistle of Galatians 00:03:49.05\00:03:52.75 when they began to focus on the works of the law as a 00:03:52.79\00:03:56.46 means of justification, what they did was stop obeying 00:03:56.49\00:04:01.24 the truth and this really is not that surprising when you 00:04:01.27\00:04:05.98 read the other epistles of the apostle Paul. 00:04:06.01\00:04:08.14 He draws it out in other places. 00:04:08.17\00:04:09.84 I would like to point to one of them and it is in 00:04:09.88\00:04:11.66 Romans 10:1 he brings up this same point and it starts 00:04:11.70\00:04:17.90 this way, "brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God 00:04:17.93\00:04:22.75 "for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them 00:04:22.79\00:04:27.58 "witness that they have a zeal for God, 00:04:27.61\00:04:29.54 "but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant 00:04:29.58\00:04:33.07 "of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their 00:04:33.10\00:04:36.55 "own righteousness, have not submitted to the 00:04:36.59\00:04:40.37 "righteousness of God. " 00:04:40.40\00:04:42.30 So they were establishing their own righteousness and 00:04:42.33\00:04:46.88 it was a way for them to not submit to the righteousness 00:04:46.92\00:04:51.43 of God, so in many cases. - there was an obedience 00:04:51.47\00:04:55.05 it was actually a substitute for obedience. 00:04:55.08\00:04:57.32 Yeah, it was an obedience to a standard that they had 00:04:57.36\00:05:00.49 set up and they are the ones who determined what was 00:05:00.53\00:05:03.60 important and what wasn't instead of trusting what God 00:05:03.63\00:05:06.66 said was important and what wasn't. 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.32 That reminds me of another example in the Old Testament 00:05:08.36\00:05:12.24 Scripture in 1 Samuel during the reign of Israel's first 00:05:12.27\00:05:17.50 King Saul 1 Samuel 15, Saul had a habit of doing that 00:05:17.53\00:05:21.17 very thing of substituting his own standard for God's 00:05:21.20\00:05:24.84 standard and thinking that would answer to the obedience 00:05:24.87\00:05:28.47 that God was looking for. 00:05:28.50\00:05:29.73 1 Samuel 15:22, Samuel had to address Saul, God had commanded 00:05:29.77\00:05:37.03 Saul through the prophet Samuel that he was to go 00:05:37.06\00:05:39.91 against his enemies and he was going to the Amalekites 00:05:39.95\00:05:44.77 to war against them and to leave no one alive. 00:05:44.80\00:05:49.44 It was an idolatrous nation and they were not to take 00:05:49.47\00:05:53.68 any spoils, it was customary in those days to capture the 00:05:53.71\00:05:57.89 foreign king because then you could take glory to 00:05:57.92\00:05:59.97 yourself because you conquered that king, 00:06:00.01\00:06:01.54 but God said leave nothing. 00:06:01.57\00:06:03.69 Well Saul comes back from that battle and he brings the 00:06:03.73\00:06:08.88 livestock with him and brings the King with him. 00:06:08.92\00:06:12.38 He feels like he has done what God has commanded him. 00:06:12.42\00:06:17.60 So Samuel addresses him here as he sees this and he says, 00:06:17.64\00:06:22.51 In 22, "has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings 00:06:22.55\00:06:27.39 "and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the Lord? 00:06:27.43\00:06:31.68 "Behold to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed 00:06:31.72\00:06:36.71 "then the fat of rams. For rebellion is the sin of 00:06:36.74\00:06:40.78 "witchcraft," and if you are reading along at home 00:06:40.82\00:06:44.82 you'll notice that 'as' is italicized. 00:06:44.86\00:06:47.74 That means it is not there in the original. 00:06:47.78\00:06:50.10 It would originally read like this, 00:06:50.13\00:06:52.58 rebellion is the sin of witchcraft. 00:06:52.62\00:06:55.00 He says who has bewitched you? The issue is the exact 00:06:55.03\00:07:01.91 same thing, Saul instead of obeying the voice of the Lord 00:07:01.95\00:07:07.61 was making certain personal sacrifices and obeying in 00:07:07.64\00:07:11.67 some areas instead of rendering a full obedience. 00:07:11.71\00:07:15.71 He was setting his own standard up. 00:07:15.74\00:07:17.06 You could say Saul was here seeking justification by the 00:07:17.10\00:07:22.66 works of the law, he was coming up with his own 00:07:22.69\00:07:25.46 idea and as long as he did what he felt was the most 00:07:25.50\00:07:28.47 important stuff that God was asking him to do, it was 00:07:28.50\00:07:31.43 okay if he weaved in a little bit of his own. 00:07:31.47\00:07:33.66 Really when we look at this situation we find that 00:07:33.70\00:07:38.21 sometimes we can set certain things that we do that 00:07:38.24\00:07:41.94 we are comfortable doing and we are okay with doing, 00:07:41.98\00:07:46.09 and those become what we feel is most important because 00:07:46.12\00:07:50.20 we are okay with them. 00:07:50.23\00:07:51.49 By doing that it becomes a substitute for obedience with 00:07:51.52\00:07:55.48 our whole heart and our whole life and that is exactly 00:07:55.52\00:07:59.45 what happened back in Galatia. 00:07:59.48\00:08:00.98 Circumcision became a substitute for obedience. 00:08:01.02\00:08:05.31 That's right and people think of it as the opposite. 00:08:05.35\00:08:09.01 They said no circumcision was obedience, but it was only 00:08:09.05\00:08:12.65 obedience in the context of a heart that was surrender to God, 00:08:12.68\00:08:17.17 where the flesh of the heart was cut away right before. 00:08:17.20\00:08:20.23 That's right, if you look at it Paul was not doing what 00:08:20.26\00:08:23.44 so many today would say he is all you really need to do 00:08:23.47\00:08:27.03 is believe, and this whole idea of circumcision, law, 00:08:27.07\00:08:30.59 that is unimportant you just need to believe. 00:08:30.63\00:08:33.12 Let's be honest about this, if the apostle Paul was 00:08:33.16\00:08:36.32 giving you the option, or if you have the option 00:08:36.36\00:08:39.48 to either just believe and that is all 00:08:39.52\00:08:42.43 you have to do, or be circumcised. 00:08:42.47\00:08:45.31 Which would be the easier route? Well just believe. 00:08:45.34\00:08:49.61 Circumcision was not exactly a pleasant experience to go 00:08:49.64\00:08:52.19 through. - not at all is specially in a day that 00:08:52.23\00:08:54.42 didn't employ a lot of anesthesia or anything else. 00:08:54.46\00:08:57.01 That's right, so clearly Paul was not giving a just 00:08:57.05\00:09:00.39 believe Gospel, he was a gospel that called on them to 00:09:00.43\00:09:03.74 do more than just render this external obedience. 00:09:03.77\00:09:07.16 And let's just clarify because I know there will be some 00:09:07.19\00:09:09.45 who will say my Bible says he says just believe in the 00:09:09.49\00:09:11.71 Lord Jesus Christ. What we mean by a 00:09:11.74\00:09:13.33 just believe Gospel is not what Paul means when he says 00:09:13.36\00:09:16.44 he believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. 00:09:16.47\00:09:18.60 This is what we are greatly talking about in the rest of 00:09:18.64\00:09:20.93 our time here, but we are addressing a belief that 00:09:20.97\00:09:24.73 excludes obedience and that is not a biblical teaching. 00:09:24.76\00:09:28.23 We are going to see that very clearly. 00:09:28.26\00:09:29.71 The fact is you are saying here this is something we see 00:09:29.75\00:09:32.74 repeated in the history of Israel. 00:09:32.77\00:09:34.10 I'm thinking about Matthew 23 and the religion of the 00:09:34.14\00:09:37.09 Pharisees and it says in Matthew 23:23. 00:09:37.12\00:09:41.57 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" 00:09:41.61\00:09:45.19 Now that word hypocrite comes from a Greek word that 00:09:45.23\00:09:48.64 means an actor or a stage player, you guys are actors, 00:09:48.67\00:09:52.05 you are pretenders that your religion. 00:09:52.08\00:09:54.69 "Hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and 00:09:54.73\00:09:59.29 Cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the 00:09:59.32\00:10:03.62 law: Justice and Mercy and faith. These you ought to 00:10:03.66\00:10:07.92 have done, without leaving the others undone. 00:10:07.96\00:10:10.86 Jesus didn't have any problem that they were paying these 00:10:10.89\00:10:15.27 tithes on these very minute herbs, very small herbs. 00:10:15.31\00:10:18.15 They were very particular, Jesus never condemned the 00:10:18.19\00:10:21.81 Pharisees for being a particular, what the problem was 00:10:21.85\00:10:25.49 is that they were over do certain areas of obedience 00:10:25.52\00:10:29.03 to compensate for what they didn't want to do. So for 00:10:29.07\00:10:32.48 example if they didn't want to obey in one area they 00:10:32.51\00:10:35.55 would figure well, I'll go to church twice a week. 00:10:35.58\00:10:37.76 - then they added their own laws to that to make it 00:10:37.80\00:10:40.74 okay. - if I'm with my neighbor's wife but I will go 00:10:40.77\00:10:44.06 to church more often and pay more money and that may 00:10:44.10\00:10:47.35 sound crazy but we do that very thing today. 00:10:47.39\00:10:50.13 That's what the Galatianism was, we substitute what we 00:10:50.17\00:10:54.62 feel is obedience instead of rendering obedience in 00:10:54.66\00:10:58.02 those areas we just don't want to render obedience in. 00:10:58.05\00:11:00.76 I think you hit the point which is where you want to 00:11:00.80\00:11:03.48 and where you don't want to. 00:11:03.51\00:11:04.96 I'm mean obviously you are not going to create a standard 00:11:04.99\00:11:07.67 of righteousness, or what you believe is important around 00:11:07.70\00:11:10.34 things that you do not feel comfortable doing. 00:11:10.38\00:11:12.70 You end up choosing, if you feel comfortable with that, 00:11:12.74\00:11:14.77 that becomes important and the other things well 00:11:14.80\00:11:17.42 at least you are doing these so why do I need to do these? 00:11:17.45\00:11:19.61 He reminds me of what we talked about in our last episode 00:11:19.65\00:11:21.77 where we brought up Cain and Abel. 00:11:21.81\00:11:24.45 Cain and Abel were both worshiping God, they were both 00:11:24.48\00:11:28.53 many things that God had asked. Cain did not do 00:11:28.57\00:11:32.59 everything that God had asked because he felt 00:11:32.62\00:11:35.09 I'm already doing these other things and just because 00:11:35.13\00:11:38.04 I don't bring the lamb that God asked for 00:11:38.08\00:11:40.81 I am worshiping God, I am doing these other things. 00:11:40.84\00:11:44.28 He didn't truly sense that he had a need and he needed 00:11:44.32\00:11:47.72 to trust what God was telling him. 00:11:47.76\00:11:49.58 He had too much confidence in himself. 00:11:49.62\00:11:51.38 That is right and he really wasn't obeying God. 00:11:51.41\00:11:53.92 - that is the point I wanted to make because most 00:11:53.95\00:11:57.29 Christians typically assume right off the bat the 00:11:57.32\00:12:00.63 Pharisees their big thing was obedience. 00:12:00.66\00:12:03.95 But it is really interesting if we go to John 7 and ask 00:12:03.99\00:12:11.39 the question of people, 00:12:11.43\00:12:13.72 Who was more obedient Jesus or the Pharisees? 00:12:13.75\00:12:17.75 Which Jesus or the Pharisees? It is hard for people 00:12:17.78\00:12:22.75 to answer right away, here is how I worded it, 00:12:22.78\00:12:25.60 lets ask it that way. 00:12:25.63\00:12:28.44 Who was more strict in their observance of the law, 00:12:28.47\00:12:30.49 Jesus or the Pharisees? 00:12:30.52\00:12:32.46 Oh, the answer is the Pharisees were. 00:12:32.50\00:12:34.33 But if you come to John chapter 7 and the words of Jesus 00:12:34.36\00:12:37.38 himself in John 7:19 Jesus said to the Pharisees, 00:12:37.42\00:12:40.06 "did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps 00:12:40.10\00:12:44.53 the law?" And yet if we go to John 15 where Jesus speaks 00:12:44.56\00:12:48.96 Himself as he sits in John 15:10, "if you keep my 00:12:48.99\00:12:53.98 commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have 00:12:54.02\00:12:57.08 kept my Father's commandments and abide in His love. 00:12:57.11\00:12:59.80 Now the point to be understood is, but Pharisees were 00:12:59.84\00:13:02.49 not obedient to the law of God. 00:13:02.53\00:13:03.97 They were obedient to their concept of law God which was 00:13:04.00\00:13:06.98 vastly different, they were obedient to their own 00:13:07.01\00:13:09.43 standard that they had set up. 00:13:09.47\00:13:11.13 They were picking and choosing what they were 00:13:11.17\00:13:13.15 comfortable with and leave in undone because 00:13:13.19\00:13:15.08 they were feeling they were all right because 00:13:15.12\00:13:16.98 they had tipped the scales as it were. 00:13:17.02\00:13:19.47 So when we are talking about obedience we're talking about 00:13:19.50\00:13:23.23 a heart obedience that God is calling for. 00:13:23.27\00:13:26.09 One more point that I would like to add into that is 00:13:26.13\00:13:29.19 when it talks in Galatians about this justification 00:13:29.22\00:13:32.25 that doesn't come by the works of the law 00:13:32.28\00:13:35.44 but by hearing a faith. 00:13:35.47\00:13:37.29 We remember that in Romans 3:31 it says by faith we 00:13:37.32\00:13:41.54 established law so the only way to truly have obedience 00:13:41.58\00:13:45.76 is through faith, the works of the law which is 00:13:45.79\00:13:48.56 an avenue apart from Christ, there is too much self- 00:13:48.59\00:13:51.78 confidence and we can never be truly obedient to God 00:13:51.81\00:13:54.97 when we don't yield ourselves to trust Him. 00:13:55.00\00:13:57.75 That is absolutely right. 00:13:57.78\00:13:59.25 Well we have some of the things we want to jump into here 00:13:59.28\00:14:01.62 but we are going to take a break and we hope 00:14:01.65\00:14:03.52 you stay with us and we will be right back! 00:14:03.55\00:14:05.39
