Welcome back to Books of the Book, we are studying the 00:00:07.04\00:00:09.73 book of Galatians and actually Jim you had just mentioned 00:00:09.77\00:00:12.51 1 John 3:4 and we are talking about what it means to be 00:00:12.54\00:00:15.25 dead unto the law. 00:00:15.28\00:00:16.46 We are going to go there in the book of 1 John 3:4 right 00:00:16.50\00:00:21.36 before the end of the Bible you come to the book of Revelation 00:00:21.40\00:00:22.91 have the 1, 2 and 3 John, Jude and then Revelation. 00:00:22.94\00:00:27.10 I read in the New King James version and it says, 00:00:27.13\00:00:30.71 "whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, 00:00:30.75\00:00:34.30 "and sin is lawlessness. " 00:00:34.33\00:00:36.21 Now the King James version says, transgression of the law. 00:00:36.25\00:00:39.58 Sin is transgression of the law and sometimes that makes 00:00:39.61\00:00:43.03 it pretty plain obviously that sin is transgression of 00:00:43.07\00:00:46.02 God's Ten Commandment law and we see that with Paul's 00:00:46.05\00:00:48.70 writings there in Romans 7, we just looked at it. 00:00:48.74\00:00:51.07 The law that convicted him was the law that said 00:00:51.10\00:00:53.21 thou shall not covet and that kind of thing, 00:00:53.25\00:00:55.29 but some people in some of these new editions like 00:00:55.32\00:00:58.47 sin is lawlessness wonder at what it means. 00:00:58.51\00:01:01.93 What's fascinating is if you read this in the Greek 00:01:01.97\00:01:04.71 language of the New Testament, what it says is a word 00:01:04.74\00:01:07.45 for sin is Hamartia. 00:01:07.49\00:01:09.21 And the word for lawlessness is Anomia. 00:01:09.24\00:01:14.38 From the Greek word Nomos law, "a" is negative so it literally 00:01:14.42\00:01:18.85 is lawlessness, but the context there which is interesting 00:01:18.88\00:01:23.28 Hamartia means literally to miss the mark. 00:01:23.32\00:01:26.16 It would be like if you are taking target practice, a bow 00:01:26.19\00:01:30.43 and arrow and you were shooting for a bull's-eye, 00:01:30.46\00:01:32.73 and you miss the mark. 00:01:32.77\00:01:34.71 So an essence the text says in Greek to miss the mark is 00:01:34.75\00:01:39.71 lawlessness, so what would the mark be? 00:01:39.74\00:01:41.99 - the law. - The mark would be the law of God. 00:01:42.02\00:01:44.01 So in other words he is saying in this text that the mark, 00:01:44.05\00:01:46.35 the aim for the Christian is the law of God, 00:01:46.39\00:01:49.10 and that would be the standard. 00:01:49.13\00:01:50.12 You know there is a word in that verse that is key and 00:01:50.16\00:01:52.77 I think it has been in all the verses we have discussed on 00:01:52.80\00:01:55.58 the idea of the law still be valid in the New Testament. 00:01:55.61\00:01:58.36 It is a small word, but it is an important word. 00:01:58.39\00:02:01.72 The word is "is". It says that sin is lawlessness. 00:02:01.76\00:02:05.02 So when the apostle Paul was writing this, or John in this 00:02:05.06\00:02:09.50 particular case was writing this, long after the 00:02:09.54\00:02:11.50 crucifixion of Christ he was saying in present tense sin 00:02:11.53\00:02:16.32 is at this moment, breaking the law. 00:02:16.35\00:02:19.19 Falling short of the law and when you look back at all the 00:02:19.22\00:02:21.70 verses we have looked at and you will see that same 00:02:21.74\00:02:23.75 reality, the law is spiritual. 00:02:23.79\00:02:26.28 The Commandment is holy and just and good and that is in 00:02:26.31\00:02:29.54 Romans 7:12 and 14. 00:02:29.57\00:02:31.02 We found in Ephesians 6:1 wherein said the fifth 00:02:31.06\00:02:34.83 commandment is the first commandment with promise, he 00:02:34.87\00:02:37.20 is quoting the fifth commandment says in present tense 00:02:37.23\00:02:39.52 that this is the first commandment promised. 00:02:39.56\00:02:41.26 So all throughout the New Testament you will find that 00:02:41.29\00:02:44.25 those statements that relate to the law of God are in the 00:02:44.29\00:02:47.21 present tense. - that's right. 00:02:47.25\00:02:48.60 When you compare that with for example Colossians chapter 00:02:48.63\00:02:51.79 2 which talks about a law that was, it's past tense for 00:02:51.82\00:02:54.94 the handwriting of ordinances 00:02:54.98\00:02:56.73 written by Moses and it is past tense verses 00:02:56.76\00:02:59.77 the present tense law of the Ten Commandments. 00:02:59.81\00:03:02.36 It is a very good point an important point. 00:03:02.40\00:03:04.88 Another point that is brought up to me by some who don't 00:03:04.92\00:03:08.74 feel the law of God, meaning the Ten Commandments are 00:03:08.77\00:03:12.10 still valid in the New Testament is that when the Bible 00:03:12.14\00:03:15.00 speaks about Commandments is just talking about the 00:03:15.03\00:03:18.10 teachings of Christ, or the generic commands of God 00:03:18.14\00:03:21.80 for instance in Revelation 14:12 where it says here 00:03:21.84\00:03:24.64 a they, here are the patience of the saints, here are 00:03:24.67\00:03:27.44 those that keep the commandments of God. 00:03:27.48\00:03:28.72 Well they say that is not the Ten Commandments of 00:03:28.75\00:03:31.42 Exodus or in Revelation where it says later in chapter 22 00:03:31.46\00:03:36.00 Blessed are those who do His commandments. 00:03:36.03\00:03:38.11 They say that is not the Ten Commandments. 00:03:38.15\00:03:40.16 But remember as we looked at these different verses in 00:03:40.19\00:03:43.89 the context we have specifically chosen verses that quote 00:03:43.93\00:03:47.32 one of the Ten Commandments so we know what law he is 00:03:47.35\00:03:50.71 talking about, Romans 2 Romans 7, Ephesians 6, 00:03:50.75\00:03:56.14 each of these end James Chapter 2 all have in the context 00:03:56.17\00:03:59.48 one of the Ten Commandments so you know exactly what law 00:03:59.52\00:04:02.80 he is talking about. 00:04:02.83\00:04:04.89 I don't want to get this confused with the idea that you 00:04:04.92\00:04:06.55 are justified by keeping the Ten Commandments, but 00:04:06.58\00:04:09.11 just because you can't be justified by the 00:04:09.14\00:04:10.92 Ten Commandments doesn't mean they are not important or 00:04:10.95\00:04:12.78 that they don't have a place or a role. 00:04:12.82\00:04:14.24 That's what we see Paul making that point in his writings 00:04:14.28\00:04:18.18 here, is the mindset that causes people to read into what 00:04:18.22\00:04:22.02 is not here, in other words there is a mindset that the 00:04:22.05\00:04:25.38 law of God restricts us and in order to have a true 00:04:25.42\00:04:28.68 Christian liberty, the liberty is actually a liberty from 00:04:28.72\00:04:33.62 the law and thus the concept dead to the law must mean we are 00:04:33.66\00:04:37.67 free, when we say free from law or free from the thing 00:04:37.71\00:04:42.96 that held us, that freedom is the freedom to obey the law. 00:04:42.99\00:04:48.21 We picked it up in Galatians 5 where there is another 00:04:48.25\00:04:52.04 passage here a Galatians 5 that aligns with that same 00:04:52.08\00:04:55.55 point Christian liberty and we will get Galatians 5:1. 00:04:55.58\00:04:59.93 Paul says, "stand fast there fore in the liberty by which 00:04:59.96\00:05:04.19 "Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again 00:05:04.22\00:05:08.41 "with a yoke of bondage. " 00:05:08.44\00:05:09.82 I have had people approach me and say well the Bible is 00:05:09.85\00:05:12.78 pretty clear when Paul says don't be entangled with the 00:05:12.82\00:05:15.76 yoke of bondage, that is the Ten Commandments, you are free 00:05:15.80\00:05:18.71 from having to keep the Ten Commandments. 00:05:18.74\00:05:20.46 But the issue here is that is not what the apostle is 00:05:20.49\00:05:24.55 saying, we will read on here and explain that and he goes 00:05:24.59\00:05:28.44 on in verse two to say, "in deed I Paul, say to you that if 00:05:28.48\00:05:31.71 "you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. 00:05:31.75\00:05:35.05 "And I testify again to every man who become circumcised 00:05:35.09\00:05:38.66 "that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. You have 00:05:38.70\00:05:42.20 "become in this estranged from Christ, you who attempt to 00:05:42.24\00:05:45.82 "be justified by law; for you have fallen from grace. " 00:05:45.85\00:05:49.40 Now those are strong words. 00:05:49.44\00:05:51.50 That can sound on the surface, to a surface reader, wow 00:05:51.54\00:05:56.86 anybody who thinks about keeping the law they are 00:05:56.89\00:05:59.85 estranged from Christ, it's Christ or the law. 00:05:59.89\00:06:02.77 We are making a key point that I think is what creates 00:06:02.81\00:06:05.84 the confusion for many, in the book of Galatians. 00:06:05.88\00:06:08.56 That is that what Paul is addressing here is not obedience 00:06:08.60\00:06:14.09 to the law, but seeking to be justified by the law. 00:06:14.13\00:06:18.52 If he was saying the other, then he by telling the 00:06:18.55\00:06:22.02 Ephesians that they should keep the fifth commandment 00:06:22.05\00:06:25.55 would have been placing them under a yoke bondage. 00:06:25.58\00:06:29.04 It would have made him to contradict himself. 00:06:29.08\00:06:31.88 He is not talking about obedience and if you look 00:06:31.91\00:06:34.65 carefully in verse four it specifically says, "you who 00:06:34.68\00:06:37.80 "attempt to be justified by law. " 00:06:37.83\00:06:41.11 He says those are the ones estranged from Christ. 00:06:41.14\00:06:44.16 The reason is, if you are seeking to be justified by some 00:06:44.19\00:06:47.27 external behavior, you really think you are okay and you 00:06:47.31\00:06:50.35 just need to go to church and do certain things and 00:06:50.38\00:06:53.01 you don't not need that personal surrender to Christ and 00:06:53.05\00:06:55.82 a deep commitment to Christ, then you are basically 00:06:55.85\00:06:59.44 saying I don't need Christ. 00:06:59.48\00:07:01.70 You are becoming estranged to Christ. 00:07:01.74\00:07:04.26 I can clean my act a little bit and that will be sufficient. 00:07:04.29\00:07:07.13 That is exactly right so this idea of justification. 00:07:07.17\00:07:09.67 this goes back to what we were talking 00:07:09.71\00:07:11.51 about the Pharisee and the publican, the Pharisee was in 00:07:11.55\00:07:14.36 the temple and he was praying, he said I'm glad 00:07:14.40\00:07:16.99 I'm not as bad as those guys. 00:07:17.03\00:07:18.64 That's right, that's right, so if obedience is not what 00:07:18.68\00:07:22.56 places you under a yoke of bondage then what does it mean 00:07:22.59\00:07:26.44 justification by law is placing you under 00:07:26.48\00:07:29.29 a yoke of bondage? 00:07:29.32\00:07:30.29 What exactly is that telling us? 00:07:30.30\00:07:31.71 It's placing us under yoke of bondage. 00:07:31.74\00:07:33.15 Absolutely and it makes me think of this idea because he 00:07:33.18\00:07:37.16 is talking about liberty, we is the liberty. 00:07:37.19\00:07:40.51 What is liberty, is liberty freedom from having to obey 00:07:40.54\00:07:45.13 God? I think to myself why would anybody who chooses to 00:07:45.17\00:07:48.67 give their life to Christ and serve Him want to be free 00:07:48.71\00:07:52.18 from having to serve Him? 00:07:52.21\00:07:53.62 Why would I want to be free from having to obey the 00:07:53.65\00:07:56.75 principles of God's government, the principles of His law, 00:07:56.79\00:08:01.34 the principles of His very character? 00:08:01.38\00:08:03.82 Why would I want to be free from that? 00:08:03.86\00:08:06.23 Is that the kind of freedom that Christianity is talking 00:08:06.27\00:08:09.19 about? - it just can't be. 00:08:09.22\00:08:10.57 I guess the best way for me to describe this, 00:08:10.61\00:08:13.48 I look back to when we were going through 00:08:13.51\00:08:16.34 our conversion experience. 00:08:16.38\00:08:17.82 Now my brother Mark is five years older than me and I am 00:08:17.85\00:08:21.15 not sure if the camera is picking it up but he has a few 00:08:21.18\00:08:24.45 more silver streaks in his hair. 00:08:24.48\00:08:26.33 That is what gives him away, but though we were born the 00:08:26.37\00:08:30.11 first time five years apart, we were born at the same 00:08:30.14\00:08:33.85 time the second time. 00:08:33.88\00:08:35.29 We had our conversion experience around the same time. 00:08:35.32\00:08:37.65 If you were to go back to before our conversion 00:08:37.68\00:08:40.67 experience and tell us come on over we're are going to 00:08:40.70\00:08:44.71 have a Bible study of the book of Galatians, I can 00:08:44.75\00:08:47.82 imagine that I wouldn't have been all that anxious. 00:08:47.85\00:08:50.85 I remember after my conversion experience when Mark first 00:08:50.89\00:08:53.88 found - not anxious, you just would not have shown up. 00:08:53.92\00:08:56.82 Well alright, but I remember when you first found out 00:08:56.85\00:08:59.67 about me beginning to read my Bible for myself and 00:08:59.70\00:09:02.49 I was hungry for the word. 00:09:02.52\00:09:04.38 Galatians chapter 1 were the apostle Paul said that 00:09:04.41\00:09:08.01 he was called to be an apostle not from men nor 00:09:08.04\00:09:11.61 through man but through Jesus Christ. 00:09:11.64\00:09:13.52 I relate to that because I didn't have a Bible study with 00:09:13.55\00:09:16.90 someone, or evangelist did not come to me, I just read my 00:09:16.93\00:09:20.24 Bible and the Lord Jesus gripped my heart. 00:09:20.27\00:09:23.25 That was powerful, but prior to that time I wasn't 00:09:23.29\00:09:27.23 anywhere near that and I started reading my Bible and you found 00:09:27.26\00:09:30.93 out about it I remember hearing you say well, Jim he doesn't 00:09:30.96\00:09:34.60 have a religious bone in his body, and I didn't. 00:09:34.63\00:09:36.83 So if I would have been placed in certain circumstances 00:09:36.86\00:09:40.31 where to be in church all day or something, 00:09:40.35\00:09:43.09 it would have been drudgery to me. 00:09:43.12\00:09:45.46 It would have been a yoke of bondage to me. 00:09:45.50\00:09:48.28 There are many people who are going through the motions 00:09:48.32\00:09:50.99 because they believe that God is requiring it, 00:09:51.03\00:09:53.77 but in their heart they don't have the interest, 00:09:53.80\00:09:56.27 they don't have a hunger for spiritual things. 00:09:56.30\00:09:58.73 They have not yet seen their need. 00:09:58.76\00:10:01.03 I was brought to a point where I sensed a need in my 00:10:01.06\00:10:04.15 life and when I read my Bible it was like food to my soul. 00:10:04.18\00:10:07.32 But prior to being prepared for that time if 00:10:07.36\00:10:10.22 I had been introduced to it, I probably would have 00:10:10.25\00:10:13.55 been not very interested. 00:10:13.58\00:10:15.41 It wouldn't have been food to your soul and thus the 00:10:15.45\00:10:17.69 words of Jesus, "blessed are those who hunger and thirst 00:10:17.72\00:10:19.92 "after righteousness for they shall be filled. " 00:10:19.96\00:10:22.78 So we see the reality here is this idea of dead to the law, 00:10:22.81\00:10:27.62 when we go back to Galatians 2, Paul talking about him dying 00:10:27.66\00:10:31.29 to the law, notice again what he says, "for I through the 00:10:31.33\00:10:34.93 law died to the law. " In other words as the law 00:10:34.96\00:10:37.76 convicted me I saw my sinful nature, then I accepted 00:10:37.80\00:10:42.47 Christ and the cardinal nature died. 00:10:42.50\00:10:44.71 Notice how he words it, I through the law died to the law 00:10:44.74\00:10:47.26 that I might not have to worry about keeping the law 00:10:47.29\00:10:50.38 anymore? No that's not what he says. 00:10:50.41\00:10:51.65 That's not what he says at all. 00:10:51.68\00:10:53.16 He says that I might live to God. 00:10:53.19\00:10:54.60 The freedom, the liberty of a Christian life is not a 00:10:54.63\00:10:57.91 liberty from obedience, but a liberty into obedience. 00:10:57.95\00:11:01.48 Listen I was free not to obey the law of God when I was 00:11:01.52\00:11:04.37 not a Christian, I never obeyed the law of God and never 00:11:04.41\00:11:07.17 worried about it, but I was not free to obey it because 00:11:07.21\00:11:09.93 it simply wasn't in my being to do so. 00:11:09.97\00:11:12.17 But through conversion my heart was changed and the 00:11:12.20\00:11:15.80 freedom I have now is a freedom that I never had before, 00:11:15.83\00:11:18.40 and that is a freedom to serve God with my heart. 00:11:18.44\00:11:20.87 That's what Paul says, I died to the law that I might 00:11:20.91\00:11:23.51 live to God, notice verse 20, "I have been crucified with 00:11:23.55\00:11:26.82 "Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; 00:11:26.85\00:11:30.09 "and the life which I now live in the flesh 00:11:30.12\00:11:32.83 "I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and 00:11:32.86\00:11:36.27 "gave Himself for me. " 00:11:36.31\00:11:37.28 He is talking about a conversion here, he is talking about 00:11:37.29\00:11:39.66 a new experience. - Amen. If we keep reading in 00:11:39.70\00:11:42.75 verse 21, he only concludes the thought beautifully. 00:11:42.78\00:11:45.68 But before we go there I just want to take one peek at 00:11:45.72\00:11:48.85 2 Corinthians 6:11 and there is another point I would like 00:11:48.88\00:11:52.56 to make, "O Corinthians! We have spoken openly to you, 00:11:52.59\00:11:56.08 "our heart is wide open. You are not restricted by us, 00:11:56.11\00:11:59.56 "but you are restricted by your own affections. " 00:11:59.60\00:12:02.10 You know people look at the problem we have in humanity 00:12:02.14\00:12:05.07 and they say we are out of harmony with God. 00:12:05.10\00:12:07.53 Well we have one or two choices, either we can remove the 00:12:07.57\00:12:11.57 requirements, the law of God or we can remove that which is 00:12:11.60\00:12:15.57 standing in the way which is our own Carnal heart. 00:12:15.60\00:12:18.10 And the reality is that the Carnal heart is what 00:12:18.14\00:12:20.76 ultimately has to go in order for us to be brought 00:12:20.80\00:12:23.38 into harmony with God. 00:12:23.42\00:12:24.68 It is a shame many Christians look at the law as the 00:12:24.71\00:12:28.15 problem, Jesus died to do away with the law. 00:12:28.18\00:12:30.72 But no, the apostle Paul says it is our own affections. 00:12:30.76\00:12:34.52 Right here concluding with verse 21 in Galatians 2 it 00:12:34.55\00:12:37.75 says, "I do not set aside the grace of God; for if 00:12:37.78\00:12:40.90 "righteousness comes to the law, and Christ died in vain. " 00:12:40.94\00:12:44.46 It is Christ's death and us dying with Him that brings us 00:12:44.50\00:12:47.99 into harmony with God. 00:12:48.02\00:12:49.78 Friends, we hope you have enjoyed this study and we look 00:12:49.81\00:12:51.98 forward to seeing you next time. 00:12:52.01\00:12:53.48
