Welcome to Books of the Book, I'm Pastor Mark Howard 00:00:21.83\00:00:24.40 of the Global Seventh-day Adventist Church in Global 00:00:24.44\00:00:26.94 Michigan and Director of the Emmanuel Institute of Evangelism 00:00:26.97\00:00:29.13 in the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventist. 00:00:29.17\00:00:31.50 I'm here with my co-host, my younger brother. 00:00:31.54\00:00:34.20 Yes my name is Jim Howard and I am Pastor of the 00:00:34.24\00:00:36.83 Detroit Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist Church and 00:00:36.87\00:00:39.45 the South Lyon Seventh-day Adventists Church 00:00:39.49\00:00:41.28 in Michigan as well. 00:00:41.32\00:00:42.66 We are studying in the book of Galatians. 00:00:42.70\00:00:46.41 In our last time together we were looking at what I 00:00:46.44\00:00:50.02 believe is the key note, Jim, of the book of Galatians 00:00:50.05\00:00:53.58 and that is Galatians 2:16 were Paul three times is 00:00:53.61\00:00:56.75 very emphatic that we are not saved by the works of the 00:00:56.78\00:00:59.88 law but by our faith in Jesus Christ. 00:00:59.92\00:01:02.55 We are actually going to pick up there and I'm going to 00:01:02.58\00:01:04.84 read verse 16, in fact we will start in verse 15. 00:01:04.88\00:01:07.01 Galatians 2:15 and we are going to read on through the 00:01:07.05\00:01:12.36 end of the chapter here in key in on a key thought 00:01:12.40\00:01:16.35 that he has here towards the end of the chapter. 00:01:16.39\00:01:20.27 Verse 15 says, "We who are Jews by nature and not sinners 00:01:20.31\00:01:25.38 "of the Gentiles, knowing that a man is 00:01:25.41\00:01:27.65 "not justified by the works of the law; but by faith in 00:01:27.69\00:01:30.49 The Jesus Christ, even we who have believed in Christ 00:01:30.52\00:01:33.57 "Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ 00:01:33.61\00:01:36.58 "and not by the works of the law; for by the works of 00:01:36.61\00:01:40.09 "the law shall no flesh be justified, but if while we 00:01:40.12\00:01:43.24 "seek to be justified by Christ we ourselves are found 00:01:43.28\00:01:46.36 "sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin? 00:01:46.40\00:01:49.55 "Certainly not. For if I begin those things which 00:01:49.58\00:01:52.37 "I have destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. 00:01:52.41\00:01:55.35 "For I through the law died to the law that I might 00:01:55.38\00:01:58.37 "live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; 00:01:58.41\00:02:01.35 "it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; 00:02:01.39\00:02:04.78 "and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by 00:02:04.81\00:02:08.40 "faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself 00:02:08.44\00:02:12.01 "for me. I do not set aside the grace of God; for if 00:02:12.04\00:02:15.58 "righteousness comes through the law, 00:02:15.62\00:02:16.90 "then Christ died in vain. " 00:02:16.94\00:02:18.82 This is what we are going to be expounding on. 00:02:18.86\00:02:21.78 What I want to do is that I want to key in on this 00:02:21.82\00:02:24.68 right here, this term, or this phrase rather that I died 00:02:24.71\00:02:32.13 to the law, I through the law died to the law. 00:02:32.17\00:02:35.72 You know Jim many people read that as they are going 00:02:35.75\00:02:38.44 through Galatians and as we already mentioned, 00:02:38.47\00:02:40.20 Galatians is used as the book that people attempt to 00:02:40.24\00:02:45.04 prove that the apostle Paul is showing the moral law of 00:02:45.08\00:02:48.52 God, the Ten Commandments is something that Christians 00:02:48.56\00:02:51.97 don't need to concern themselves with. 00:02:52.00\00:02:54.12 This is one of those key passages where they say that it 00:02:54.15\00:02:57.07 says very plainly that I through the law died to the law. 00:02:57.11\00:02:59.99 He died to the law he didn't feel like he had a need 00:03:00.02\00:03:02.68 to keep the law anymore. 00:03:02.71\00:03:04.22 Paul realized he was free from that burdensome old law. 00:03:04.25\00:03:07.04 That is a concept that people will read into this, 00:03:07.07\00:03:10.16 but that is not at all what the apostle was saying. 00:03:10.19\00:03:13.21 No it isn't and I think that if this was the only passage 00:03:13.25\00:03:16.48 of Scripture we might be able to conjecture one way or 00:03:16.51\00:03:19.26 another, but the apostle talks about being dead to the 00:03:19.29\00:03:22.00 law in other places. 00:03:22.04\00:03:23.67 Before even going there though there is an important 00:03:23.70\00:03:25.97 point that we can find right in this verse. 00:03:26.01\00:03:28.12 Verse 19 says, "for I through the law died to the law. " 00:03:28.15\00:03:33.73 Who died? Was it the law? No he said I died to the law. 00:03:33.77\00:03:38.32 This same point is brought out in Romans chapter 7 and 00:03:38.36\00:03:41.82 I'm wondering if we could turn to that passage and read 00:03:41.86\00:03:45.29 from Romans chapter 7. 00:03:45.33\00:03:46.97 That is right and another interesting point is that it 00:03:47.00\00:03:48.69 was through the law he died to law. 00:03:48.72\00:03:49.97 So the law was employed in this death, and we are going to 00:03:50.00\00:03:53.03 talk more about that death. 00:03:53.06\00:03:54.63 What did you say Romans 7. 00:03:54.67\00:03:56.17 Chapter 7 yes and let's go to verse 1 so beginning right 00:03:56.20\00:04:01.85 there it says, "or do you not know, brethren 00:04:01.89\00:04:04.51 for I speak to those who know the law ", that the law 00:04:04.54\00:04:07.85 "has dominion over a man as long as he lives? 00:04:07.88\00:04:09.85 "For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to 00:04:09.89\00:04:13.27 "her husband as long as he lives. 00:04:13.31\00:04:15.17 "But if the husband dies she is released from the law of 00:04:15.21\00:04:18.41 "her husband. So then if while her husband lives and she 00:04:18.44\00:04:21.44 "marries "another man she will be called an adulterous; 00:04:21.47\00:04:24.13 "for if her husband dies she is free from that law so 00:04:24.17\00:04:26.79 "that she is no adulterous though 00:04:26.83\00:04:28.88 "she has married another man. " 00:04:28.91\00:04:30.90 This is simply just describing that if you are married 00:04:30.93\00:04:33.26 to someone you can't marry someone else 00:04:33.30\00:04:35.58 unless your spouse dies. 00:04:35.62\00:04:37.65 You can't be married to two people at the same time. 00:04:37.68\00:04:40.94 So then picking up in verse 4 he makes that parallel 00:04:40.97\00:04:44.19 to the Christian experience and he says, 00:04:44.23\00:04:46.82 "therefore, my brethren, you have also become dead to the 00:04:46.86\00:04:50.96 "law through the body of Christ, that you may be married 00:04:51.00\00:04:54.40 "to another! - to him who was raised from the dead, 00:04:54.44\00:04:57.81 "that we should bear fruit to God. " 00:04:57.85\00:04:59.79 So he says, you as a Christian have become dead to the 00:04:59.82\00:05:03.93 law through the sacrifice of Christ. 00:05:03.97\00:05:07.22 It is not the law itself that died, but my selfish will, 00:05:07.25\00:05:15.43 my selfish passion are what died. 00:05:15.46\00:05:17.68 This is in verse 5, "for when we were in the flesh, 00:05:17.71\00:05:21.48 "the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were 00:05:21.52\00:05:25.25 "at work in our members to bear fruit to death. " 00:05:25.29\00:05:27.95 So my sinful passions had to die through the sacrifice 00:05:27.98\00:05:32.86 of Christ, that I might be married to Christ resurrected 00:05:32.90\00:05:37.74 and live a new life. 00:05:37.78\00:05:39.39 Okay so the woman who is joined to her husband and 00:05:39.42\00:05:42.95 was joined by the law, when the husband died she sought 00:05:42.99\00:05:46.48 to marry another in the same law testified to that 00:05:46.51\00:05:49.84 marriage, so in other words the law did not change, 00:05:49.88\00:05:53.61 but the woman's relationship to law changed and Paul 00:05:53.64\00:05:57.82 applies that experience to us through conversion really. 00:05:57.86\00:06:02.00 That is exactly right. 00:06:02.04\00:06:03.80 So this idea of a law being that which we died to doesn't 00:06:03.83\00:06:09.33 change the law at all, it only changes us. 00:06:09.37\00:06:12.08 I died, but then the law is still is governing the 00:06:12.12\00:06:17.41 situation, it's just that now I am free to marry another. 00:06:17.45\00:06:20.05 My relation to the law changed and we see that in verse 6 00:06:20.08\00:06:23.19 where it says, "but now we have been delivered from the 00:06:23.23\00:06:26.31 "law, having died to what we were held by. " 00:06:26.34\00:06:30.56 So it's like a man who is sentenced to death, he has 00:06:30.59\00:06:32.73 committed a terrible crime and is sentenced to death 00:06:32.76\00:06:34.86 and the law demands the death of that criminal. 00:06:34.90\00:06:37.91 But when he pays that penalty, if he goes and dies the 00:06:37.95\00:06:42.35 law and no longer has any claim upon him because the 00:06:42.38\00:06:45.82 penalty has been paid and he is died to what he was held 00:06:45.85\00:06:49.25 by, died in relation to the law. 00:06:49.29\00:06:51.87 His relation to the law has changed because of that death. 00:06:51.91\00:06:54.61 But if somebody else were to break the law, 00:06:54.64\00:06:56.25 it is still valid. 00:06:56.28\00:06:57.85 That is right, we can term it another way. 00:06:57.89\00:07:00.22 I could be a criminal or a thief and he could have 15 to 00:07:00.26\00:07:03.51 20 years in prison and after he serves his 20 years he is 00:07:03.54\00:07:06.76 free to go, and that law that once condemned him, 00:07:06.80\00:07:10.21 no longer condemns him because he is died to the law 00:07:10.24\00:07:13.62 in that sense. 00:07:13.65\00:07:15.21 Paul is bring unity to the debt that we experienced through 00:07:15.24\00:07:18.25 Christ and we are going to see it as we go on. 00:07:18.28\00:07:19.49 Notice, because he says, "now we have been delivered from 00:07:19.53\00:07:22.35 "the law, having died to what we were held by, so that 00:07:22.39\00:07:25.18 "we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and 00:07:25.21\00:07:29.27 "not in the oldness of the letter. " 00:07:29.31\00:07:30.73 The whole idea is the death brings the opportunity 00:07:30.76\00:07:34.83 for service and not for dis-service. 00:07:34.86\00:07:37.03 And when we were in the flesh, we can only serve God 00:07:37.06\00:07:40.45 outwardly, we can only serve Him in the letter because 00:07:40.49\00:07:43.52 the heart attitude wasn't really in harmony with God. 00:07:43.55\00:07:47.41 That flesh, those sinful ways had to die in order for the 00:07:47.44\00:07:50.73 Spirit of God to create a new person inside and we now 00:07:50.77\00:07:54.03 serve God in a totally different way. 00:07:54.06\00:07:55.90 The flesh had to die in order for the Spirit to really 00:07:55.93\00:07:59.22 have its place in our life. 00:07:59.26\00:08:00.64 That's right, it's interesting here in Romans chapter 7 00:08:00.67\00:08:04.43 that it is the same chapter where someone would look in a 00:08:04.46\00:08:08.18 superficial reading and say wow we have become dead 00:08:08.21\00:08:10.37 to the law and the law is not important. 00:08:10.40\00:08:11.79 But right on in chapter 7 we find evidence's of the law 00:08:11.83\00:08:14.51 of God right there and this is one of the important 00:08:14.54\00:08:17.15 things that I think we need to recognize and I think our 00:08:17.18\00:08:20.20 viewers would appreciate this. 00:08:20.23\00:08:22.04 In the New Testament, the Ten Commandment law is 00:08:22.07\00:08:25.51 validated as still the will of God for Christians. 00:08:25.55\00:08:28.92 I just want to look here in Romans 7 mentioned in verse 12. 00:08:28.96\00:08:33.73 Right there it says, "therefore the law is holy, 00:08:33.77\00:08:37.57 "and the commandment holy and just and good. " 00:08:37.61\00:08:40.66 Right there it is clear he is talking about the 00:08:40.69\00:08:43.68 Ten Commandments because if you look back at verse 7 00:08:43.71\00:08:47.43 he says, "what show we say then? Is the law sin? 00:08:47.47\00:08:50.63 "Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have 00:08:50.67\00:08:53.74 "known sin except through the law. For I would not 00:08:53.77\00:08:56.53 "have known covetousness unless the law had said, 00:08:56.56\00:08:59.29 "you shall not covet. " 00:08:59.32\00:09:00.44 Now which law says you shall not covet? 00:09:00.47\00:09:01.90 That is the Ten Commandments. - are pretty plain. 00:09:01.94\00:09:04.63 - that is the law he is speaking of specifically 00:09:04.66\00:09:07.27 in Romans when he says it is holy and just and good. 00:09:07.31\00:09:10.02 Then you look down in verse 14 and he says, "for we 00:09:10.06\00:09:13.15 "know that the law is spiritual, but I am Carnal. " 00:09:13.18\00:09:16.51 The law is being spoken of as still valid for the 00:09:16.54\00:09:19.24 Christian, it is still good, it is still holy, 00:09:19.28\00:09:21.94 and it is right. 00:09:21.98\00:09:23.26 What is fascinating about that Jim is that when it says 00:09:23.29\00:09:25.41 the law is spiritual but I am Carnal. 00:09:25.45\00:09:27.26 It draws this distinction and then the reality is if something 00:09:27.30\00:09:31.24 was Carnal does a change apply here? 00:09:31.28\00:09:35.28 Is a change needed? 00:09:35.32\00:09:36.56 If one thing is Carnal at one thing is spiritual 00:09:36.60\00:09:38.54 you will have to change one or the other in which one are 00:09:38.57\00:09:40.28 you going to change? 00:09:40.32\00:09:41.50 Are you good change to spiritual thing into Carnal? 00:09:41.54\00:09:43.46 No, God for bid Paul says. 00:09:43.49\00:09:45.71 You are going to change the Carnal into spiritual and 00:09:45.74\00:09:49.36 notice that the law is spiritual so Paul is making 00:09:49.40\00:09:51.37 a point in there is nothing wrong with the law. 00:09:51.41\00:09:53.31 - that's right and to just be clear, our Carnal mind, 00:09:53.34\00:09:57.21 the nature we were born with, cannot be changed. 00:09:57.24\00:09:59.92 Romans 8:7 says, that it is opposed to God and it can't 00:09:59.96\00:10:03.25 be changed, so we need a new birth, we need the Spirit of 00:10:03.28\00:10:06.25 God to come from outside of us to bring us into harmony 00:10:06.29\00:10:09.22 with this spiritual law. 00:10:09.25\00:10:11.05 But that law is still validated in the New Testament. 00:10:11.08\00:10:13.35 I think of another example that we might want to turn to. 00:10:13.38\00:10:16.37 Ephesians, we have been looking at Galatians but to the 00:10:16.41\00:10:19.37 right of Galatians is the book of Ephesians and in 00:10:19.40\00:10:22.15 chapter 6 the apostle Paul says something very affirming 00:10:22.18\00:10:25.53 about the Ten Commandments, he says in verse 1, 00:10:25.56\00:10:28.07 "children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is 00:10:28.11\00:10:31.10 "right. Honor your father and mother," 00:10:31.14\00:10:33.81 now he is in quotes. 00:10:33.85\00:10:35.70 "Which is the first commandment with promise: that it 00:10:35.73\00:10:38.97 may be well with you and you may live long on the earth. " 00:10:39.01\00:10:42.21 Here very clearly he is encouraging the Ephesians to 00:10:42.24\00:10:45.74 keep the fifth commandment. - that is right! 00:10:45.78\00:10:47.67 So to say that the law is no longer valid and what 00:10:47.70\00:10:50.64 Paul was saying in Galatians was that the law is no 00:10:50.67\00:10:53.54 longer needed would be to contradict him in what 00:10:53.57\00:10:56.40 he is telling Ephesians here in chapter 6. 00:10:56.44\00:10:58.24 That is right in fact he would be guilty of putting them 00:10:58.27\00:11:01.62 under the law, as some claim, that the apostle Paul is 00:11:01.65\00:11:04.96 fighting against, now he is actually upholding it 00:11:05.00\00:11:06.98 like you have said. 00:11:07.01\00:11:08.09 It makes me think of a text in the book of James too. 00:11:08.12\00:11:10.49 If we can go to the book of James which is further on 00:11:10.53\00:11:12.86 in the New Testament after the book of Hebrews 00:11:12.90\00:11:14.64 you will come to the book of James. 00:11:14.68\00:11:16.05 James talks and James 2, and he makes this point in 00:11:16.09\00:11:21.90 James 2:10, where he says, "for whoever shall keep the 00:11:21.93\00:11:27.67 "whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. 00:11:27.70\00:11:31.87 "For he who said, do not commit adultery, also said, 00:11:31.90\00:11:35.22 "do not murder. " 00:11:35.26\00:11:36.46 So here we have the law he's talking about which is 00:11:36.49\00:11:39.86 the Ten Commandments, here we have the law once again. 00:11:39.89\00:11:42.80 James is pointing out the importance of observing the 00:11:42.83\00:11:45.35 Ten Commandments, but notice what he says and this 00:11:45.38\00:11:47.86 is very important here. 00:11:47.90\00:11:49.10 He says, whoever basically stumbles in one point is 00:11:49.14\00:11:52.22 guilty of all and it doesn't even seem fair. 00:11:52.25\00:11:54.51 Like you mean if I steal I have murdered? 00:11:54.54\00:11:56.99 But notice his reasoning in verse 11. 00:11:57.02\00:11:59.40 Verse 11 starts with this word for which means because 00:11:59.44\00:12:02.55 here is the explanation, this is an explanatory text. 00:12:02.59\00:12:06.36 "Whoever breaks one, breaks all because he who said 00:12:06.40\00:12:09.60 "do not commit adultery also said do not murder. " 00:12:09.64\00:12:12.81 So the whole idea is, is not about the particular 00:12:12.85\00:12:15.99 commandment as much as it is the lawgiver. 00:12:16.02\00:12:18.66 If you break one commandment, if you steal but you don't 00:12:18.69\00:12:21.45 lie you still have disobeyed the lawgiver. 00:12:21.49\00:12:24.63 So the point is the law is the product of the lawgiver and 00:12:24.66\00:12:28.89 if we serve the lawgiver why would 00:12:28.92\00:12:30.75 we not be obeying His commandments? 00:12:30.78\00:12:32.57 You know there is another verse we might want to look 00:12:34.54\00:12:38.53 at and that is in Romans 2 and beginning in verse 21. 00:12:38.57\00:12:42.52 Here the apostle Paul says and he is speaking to Jews. 00:12:46.78\00:12:49.78 He says, "you, therefore, who teach another, do you not 00:12:49.82\00:12:52.83 "teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not 00:12:52.87\00:12:55.85 "steal, do you steal? You who say, do not commit 00:12:55.88\00:12:59.47 "adultery, do you commit adultery?" 00:12:59.51\00:13:01.42 What law are we talking about here? 00:13:01.45\00:13:03.29 The Ten Commandment law again, "you who abhor idols, 00:13:03.33\00:13:07.07 "do you rob temples?" 00:13:07.10\00:13:08.72 Idols of course is Commandment number two. 00:13:08.75\00:13:10.71 Then he says, "you make your boast in the law, do you 00:13:10.74\00:13:14.85 "dishonor God through breaking the law?" 00:13:14.89\00:13:17.23 It seems pretty clear that he is saying if we break 00:13:17.27\00:13:20.14 the law, we are dishonoring God. - that's right! 00:13:20.18\00:13:22.78 That's right and he goes on to say, "for the name of 00:13:22.82\00:13:25.60 "God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you. " 00:13:25.64\00:13:29.25 So here he is telling us that we have dishonored God and 00:13:29.28\00:13:32.81 blasphemy His name among nonbelievers when we resist the 00:13:32.85\00:13:36.31 law of God, fascinating and New Testament theology here. 00:13:36.35\00:13:39.80 We could go to the core of this and say it is not just 00:13:39.84\00:13:43.71 these statements that talk about the law in a direct way, 00:13:43.74\00:13:47.57 but the statements that talk about sin. 00:13:47.61\00:13:49.50 The Bible says in 1 John 3:4 that sin is transgression 00:13:49.53\00:13:55.33 of the law, or sin is lawless- ness it says in the New King 00:13:55.37\00:13:59.08 James, but the idea there is that sin still in the New 00:13:59.12\00:14:02.54 Testament times was being spoken of as breaking the law. 00:14:02.58\00:14:05.79 That's right, and it is about time for us to take a break, 00:14:05.83\00:14:09.00 but when we come back from our break we will pick up 00:14:09.04\00:14:11.46 right there and really get into a little more of the depth 00:14:11.49\00:14:14.73 of the point of this whole idea of being dead to the law. 00:14:14.76\00:14:17.96 and how it points us to Christ in the new birth. 00:14:17.99\00:14:22.56 So stay with us! 00:14:22.59\00:14:24.48
