Welcome back to Books of the Book and we are studying 00:00:05.46\00:00:08.04 the book of Galatians and we have been talking today 00:00:08.07\00:00:10.61 about justification. 00:00:10.65\00:00:11.95 It is the powerful and beautiful core concept and 00:00:11.98\00:00:17.36 it is the gospel. 00:00:17.40\00:00:18.63 Justification is a key part of the gospel. 00:00:18.66\00:00:20.87 You have the role of justification and sanctification 00:00:20.90\00:00:23.51 which all comes through faith in Christ of which 00:00:23.55\00:00:25.01 we will be talking more about. 00:00:25.04\00:00:26.16 We are talking about how justification is needed because 00:00:26.19\00:00:32.30 of the condemnation that the law brings. 00:00:32.34\00:00:34.54 Justification is for the purpose of bringing our hearts 00:00:34.58\00:00:38.20 into harmony with that law and with the will of God. 00:00:38.24\00:00:41.83 Which is expressed in that law. 00:00:41.87\00:00:43.26 We have been talking about the need of justification 00:00:43.30\00:00:47.10 and I want to look at the gospel of Luke. 00:00:47.13\00:00:49.58 We are going to Luke 5 and find a passage here in the 00:00:49.61\00:00:53.72 words of Jesus that really draw out this issue, 00:00:53.76\00:00:56.98 the importance of sensing 00:00:57.02\00:00:59.19 the need of the justification of Christ. 00:00:59.22\00:01:03.28 You will find in Luke chapter 5:30 with me. 00:01:03.32\00:01:07.31 Matthew, Mark, Luke chapter 5:30 and it says in there, 00:01:07.35\00:01:10.73 "And the scribes and the Pharisees complained against 00:01:10.77\00:01:14.02 "His disciples saying, why do You eat and drink with 00:01:14.05\00:01:17.27 "tax collectors and sinners?" 00:01:17.30\00:01:18.92 We will comment on that in just a moment. 00:01:18.95\00:01:20.41 "Jesus answered and said to them, those who are well have 00:01:20.45\00:01:24.45 "no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 00:01:24.48\00:01:29.34 "I have not come to call the righteous, 00:01:29.37\00:01:32.46 "but sinners to repentance. " 00:01:32.50\00:01:35.01 The point that Jesus is making here is that the ministry, 00:01:35.04\00:01:38.42 His ministry was not to those who didn't need help 00:01:38.45\00:01:42.32 but to those who did. 00:01:42.36\00:01:43.47 Not only to those who didn't need help per se, 00:01:43.50\00:01:46.65 because everybody needed His help. 00:01:46.68\00:01:48.99 His ministry was to those who sensed they were sick, 00:01:49.02\00:01:52.65 who sensed their need. 00:01:52.68\00:01:54.34 I want to appeal to the viewers about the beauty of 00:01:54.37\00:01:57.08 God justifying the ungodly. 00:01:57.11\00:01:59.82 It is not uncommon for people to think, well I am so 00:01:59.86\00:02:04.91 wretched, I'm so sinful that I couldn't ask God, I couldn't 00:02:04.95\00:02:09.25 expect God to accept me, He would never accept me. 00:02:09.28\00:02:12.20 That's exactly, exactly who Jesus came to serve. 00:02:12.24\00:02:15.09 That's why we see Him and it is the reason they are so 00:02:15.12\00:02:18.00 upset because He was with tax collectors and sinners. 00:02:18.04\00:02:20.65 In their mind He was hanging out with the type of people 00:02:20.68\00:02:23.37 that were the worst of the worst and you would never be 00:02:23.41\00:02:26.06 found in the a company of these lowlife people. 00:02:26.10\00:02:28.85 But those were the very people that Jesus was always with. 00:02:28.89\00:02:32.01 They sense their need of Him. 00:02:32.05\00:02:34.40 That's right, that's right and you know when you think 00:02:34.44\00:02:37.41 about that, there are two ditches that we can fall into. 00:02:37.45\00:02:40.39 The one is thinking that we are not worthy of that 00:02:40.42\00:02:45.29 justification, that somehow we are not able to bring 00:02:45.32\00:02:49.61 ourselves into the presence of God because we cannot 00:02:49.65\00:02:53.76 imagine Him seeing all our flaws and not recognizing we 00:02:53.79\00:02:57.31 must be brought into the presence of God in order to have 00:02:57.35\00:03:00.84 those flaws removed in order for Him to 00:03:00.87\00:03:02.43 cover us with His blood. 00:03:02.46\00:03:04.50 Having said that, there is another subtle deception of 00:03:04.53\00:03:09.56 our heart that sometimes happens when it 00:03:09.60\00:03:11.79 comes to justifying ourselves. 00:03:11.82\00:03:13.58 That is that we recognize we are guilty, we admit that 00:03:13.61\00:03:17.76 we are guilty and we are proud we are guilty. 00:03:17.79\00:03:21.26 It makes us feel humble sometimes and if we are not 00:03:21.30\00:03:24.39 careful we cannot look at this in the right light. 00:03:24.43\00:03:27.89 One of my favorite passages is where David says when 00:03:27.92\00:03:32.55 he is writing after his own sin, a very serious sin. 00:03:32.58\00:03:37.18 About his repentance when he says, 00:03:37.21\00:03:40.17 "I acknowledge my trans- gressions" there in Psalm 51. 00:03:40.21\00:03:43.56 Well the point that I would like to make is David did not 00:03:43.59\00:03:46.60 just acknowledge his transgressions, he acknowledged 00:03:46.63\00:03:49.60 his transgressions to be transgressions. 00:03:49.64\00:03:52.69 In other words, it's one thing to know what 00:03:52.73\00:03:55.71 you are doing is wrong because God says it's wrong. 00:03:55.75\00:03:58.95 It is another thing to believe and understand in your 00:03:58.99\00:04:02.39 heart why it is wrong, to believe in your heart that it 00:04:02.42\00:04:05.79 is wrong, if you only believe it is wrong because 00:04:05.82\00:04:08.42 God says it's wrong and you try to fix it, 00:04:08.45\00:04:12.58 you are not going to understand why and you won't put 00:04:12.62\00:04:16.12 your whole heart into it. 00:04:16.15\00:04:17.32 In other words if you only think that 00:04:17.36\00:04:19.71 God thinks it's wrong. 00:04:19.74\00:04:21.37 So God things it's wrong and I know God thinks is wrong 00:04:21.41\00:04:24.30 so I won't do it, but in your own heart if it wasn't 00:04:24.33\00:04:27.22 because of what God said He would say that it really 00:04:27.26\00:04:30.11 isn't that big a deal to me 00:04:30.14\00:04:31.32 but I guess it's a big deal to Him. 00:04:31.36\00:04:32.52 That's right for an example like as a parent if I tell 00:04:32.56\00:04:37.29 my daughter don't ride out where the cars are, so she 00:04:37.32\00:04:41.46 takes her bike and instead of riding right where the cars 00:04:41.49\00:04:45.59 are she rides right next to where the 00:04:45.63\00:04:47.25 cars are and where they park. 00:04:47.29\00:04:49.52 She's thinking I don't know why they don't want me out 00:04:49.56\00:04:51.90 there but I can be here because she does not fully 00:04:51.93\00:04:54.07 understand the danger I'm trying to tell her about. 00:04:54.11\00:04:56.21 So because she doesn't understand that 00:04:56.25\00:04:57.87 she pushes the envelope. 00:04:57.90\00:04:59.33 A lot of times people push the envelope in terms of 00:04:59.36\00:05:02.25 the will of God because they don't really acknowledge 00:05:02.29\00:05:05.14 their transgressions as transgressions, 00:05:05.17\00:05:07.40 they don't really accept God's will and I think about 00:05:07.44\00:05:11.26 justification through faith in Christ. 00:05:11.29\00:05:13.72 We are talking about the cross of Christ 00:05:13.76\00:05:16.15 that justifies us. 00:05:16.18\00:05:18.15 It is our substitute, Jesus has taken our penalty for us. 00:05:18.19\00:05:22.31 At the same time we are acknowledging that, that penalty 00:05:22.35\00:05:27.49 He is taking for our sins, we are also accepting His will. 00:05:27.52\00:05:32.40 The act of acknowledging our sin crucified the Son of God, 00:05:32.43\00:05:37.27 at the same time if we truly are acknowledging that 00:05:37.31\00:05:40.51 we are going to accept His will as expressed in His law. 00:05:40.55\00:05:44.76 We are going to accept that to be a new way of life 00:05:44.80\00:05:48.15 otherwise we are not really acknowledging 00:05:48.18\00:05:50.30 that sin was sin. 00:05:50.33\00:05:52.52 That's right, that's right it reminds me of the parable 00:05:52.55\00:05:54.57 of the Pharisee and the tax collector. 00:05:54.61\00:05:58.18 It's in Luke 18 and again you have it in 00:05:58.22\00:06:01.76 the context of justification. 00:06:01.80\00:06:03.57 Luke 18:9 that "Jesus spoke this parable to some who 00:06:03.61\00:06:10.28 "trusted in themselves that they were righteous 00:06:10.31\00:06:13.85 "and despised others. " 00:06:13.89\00:06:15.54 The idea is when God says something is right or wrong and 00:06:15.58\00:06:20.72 I feel at liberty to do something different, in essence 00:06:20.75\00:06:25.86 I'm trusting in myself that I am righteous. 00:06:25.89\00:06:28.81 This is a hard concept to get through as Christians 00:06:28.84\00:06:32.33 Because as Christians we are taught 00:06:32.36\00:06:33.90 a lot of cliché religion. 00:06:33.93\00:06:36.69 We know we are not supposed to say we are righteous. 00:06:36.72\00:06:39.03 Christians, no, no I'm a sinner we say, but it is possible 00:06:39.07\00:06:42.70 for the mouth to confess the poverty of soul that 00:06:42.74\00:06:45.54 the heart does not recognize. - right, right! 00:06:45.57\00:06:48.30 Here is the case with this Pharisee who he trusted in 00:06:48.33\00:06:51.59 himself, the root word of righteousness is right. 00:06:51.63\00:06:54.82 He might not have felt he was perfect, but he thought he 00:06:54.86\00:06:57.96 had some good ideas, good enough to at least put him 00:06:57.99\00:07:01.06 above this tax collector. 00:07:01.10\00:07:02.82 And that is what we find in the parable. 00:07:02.85\00:07:03.82 as they go up to pray. 00:07:03.83\00:07:04.80 The Pharisee prays and he says, thank you God that I am not 00:07:04.81\00:07:08.26 as bad as other people, but the tax collector it says in 00:07:08.30\00:07:12.03 verse 13, "standing afar off, would not so much as raise 00:07:12.07\00:07:15.77 "his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 00:07:15.81\00:07:18.62 "God be merciful to me a sinner!" 00:07:18.65\00:07:20.57 I think of that, why does a person beat their breasts? 00:07:20.61\00:07:25.45 But he really feels a soul anguish over his unworthiness. 00:07:25.49\00:07:30.24 And Jesus responds to these two and says in verse 14, and 00:07:30.27\00:07:34.10 "I tell you, this man" the one who beat his breast, the 00:07:34.14\00:07:38.16 tax collector, "went down to his house justified rather 00:07:38.20\00:07:42.19 "than the other; for everyone who exalts himself 00:07:42.22\00:07:45.26 "will be humbled, and he who humbles 00:07:45.29\00:07:46.49 "himself will be exalted. " 00:07:46.53\00:07:48.25 - Amen, Amen, it sounds a lot like another story in 00:07:48.28\00:07:51.67 the Old Testament, Cain and Abel. 00:07:51.71\00:07:54.40 I always think about that story because Cain and Abel 00:07:54.44\00:07:58.19 were the sons of Adam and Eve and they both were taught 00:07:58.22\00:08:01.94 to worship God. 00:08:01.97\00:08:03.65 They both did worship God, God had already given them the 00:08:03.69\00:08:06.50 instruction on sacrifice, animal sacrifices that would 00:08:06.54\00:08:09.32 point forward to the death of Christ. 00:08:09.36\00:08:11.19 So they were already in the process of erecting an altar, 00:08:11.23\00:08:15.17 worshiping and we have the story in Genesis 4 were they 00:08:15.20\00:08:19.70 both worshiped God, they both set up an altar but Cain 00:08:19.73\00:08:24.24 instead of offering a lamb as God had prescribed, 00:08:24.28\00:08:28.75 he decided to offer the fruit of the ground. 00:08:28.79\00:08:31.01 He was a farmer and thought that was as good as the other 00:08:31.05\00:08:34.86 after all he was worshiping God. 00:08:34.90\00:08:36.52 He was for the most part, as it were we might say today 00:08:36.55\00:08:40.78 a good person, but it said that God did not accept or have 00:08:40.82\00:08:44.41 respect unto his offering, only on to Abel's offering. 00:08:44.44\00:08:49.32 So here we have a perfect picture of this idea that as 00:08:49.36\00:08:54.03 long as I do most things okay, that is really okay. 00:08:54.07\00:08:57.74 It is the same thing that the young lawyer tried to 00:08:57.78\00:09:02.34 justify himself said, he said hey as long as I consider 00:09:02.37\00:09:05.65 these people my neighbor do I really have to consider 00:09:05.69\00:09:08.93 everybody my neighbor? 00:09:08.97\00:09:10.40 So the idea of justifying ourselves is we weave into 00:09:10.44\00:09:15.16 our own element the worship of God or into obedience 00:09:15.20\00:09:20.09 to God, being clearly obedience might seem as a sign of 00:09:20.12\00:09:25.06 weakness almost rather than following God faithfully. 00:09:25.10\00:09:31.97 - Well obedience is treated by some to be something 00:09:32.01\00:09:38.84 that is contrary to faith. 00:09:38.88\00:09:40.30 In other words if you obey strictly you must not believe 00:09:40.34\00:09:44.12 or something of that nature. 00:09:44.15\00:09:46.58 What we see is the belief prompts this trust that what 00:09:46.61\00:09:52.42 God says is right. 00:09:52.45\00:09:53.73 Justification comes to the man like the tax collector 00:09:53.77\00:09:57.25 who can accept that what God says is right and yield his 00:09:57.29\00:10:00.73 own desires, or his own concepts of what is right. 00:10:00.77\00:10:04.98 We find that where we looked at Romans 4:5 where 00:10:05.01\00:10:09.18 it talked about God justifying the ungodly. 00:10:09.22\00:10:12.83 Again in Romans 4:5, "but to him who does not work but 00:10:12.87\00:10:16.05 "the believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith 00:10:16.09\00:10:19.24 "is accounted for righteousness. " 00:10:19.28\00:10:23.03 It is talking about Abraham two verses earlier Romans 4:3 00:10:23.07\00:10:28.45 says, "Abraham believed God and it was accounted 00:10:28.48\00:10:33.52 "to him for righteousness. " 00:10:33.56\00:10:34.77 Abraham accepted God's assessment of his own condition 00:10:34.80\00:10:39.56 and God's assessment of the remedy. 00:10:39.59\00:10:42.40 He didn't try to ultimately manufacture that. 00:10:42.44\00:10:46.05 He ultimately came to the point where he accepted what 00:10:46.08\00:10:49.45 God said and he acted on it, and he obeyed it. 00:10:49.48\00:10:53.74 Because of his attitude of obedience to God, 00:10:53.78\00:10:57.67 his allegiance to God, the Bible says his faith 00:10:57.70\00:11:01.56 was counted as righteousness. 00:11:01.60\00:11:04.13 I like that word attitude that you used. 00:11:04.16\00:11:06.62 It really describes well the issue when it comes to 00:11:06.65\00:11:11.91 justification because there are many people who wonder 00:11:11.95\00:11:17.50 if I am a sinner and Jesus died for me to cover my sins, 00:11:17.53\00:11:23.05 then why do I have to worry about obeying? 00:11:23.08\00:11:25.95 What makes the difference? 00:11:25.99\00:11:27.21 How is one person justified who is a sinner and 00:11:27.24\00:11:29.61 another person is not? 00:11:29.64\00:11:31.23 Well the issue has everything to do with attitude. 00:11:31.27\00:11:33.28 The example of Abraham was perfect because if you look in 00:11:33.31\00:11:36.60 Romans 4:20 it says something very interesting. 00:11:36.63\00:11:42.20 "He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief. " 00:11:42.23\00:11:46.62 Now the idea there of not wavering at the promise of God 00:11:46.66\00:11:50.61 is a little bit funny because we know he made mistakes. 00:11:50.65\00:11:53.90 You can read them in the book of Genesis where he made 00:11:53.94\00:11:57.16 mistakes, so why did he say I did not waver. 00:11:57.19\00:12:00.14 Or why could he say he did not waver? 00:12:00.17\00:12:02.29 Well the reason is because Abraham never really looked 00:12:02.32\00:12:04.98 back, Abraham never gave up. 00:12:05.01\00:12:07.36 Abraham never turned back on God. 00:12:07.40\00:12:09.74 Abraham always was seeking to move forward and even 00:12:09.78\00:12:13.08 though he was making mistakes, those mistakes could be 00:12:13.12\00:12:16.43 covered because he was pressing and on in the work of God. 00:12:16.47\00:12:19.74 He was pressing on in his efforts to follow God. 00:12:19.78\00:12:22.57 That is right so whole issue we are talking about 00:12:22.60\00:12:25.70 justification, what is key is the realization 00:12:25.73\00:12:28.79 of the need for it. 00:12:28.83\00:12:30.90 As Paul was pointing out that a man is not justified 00:12:30.94\00:12:32.90 by works of the law but by faith in Christ. 00:12:32.93\00:12:35.17 The reality is this, a person who trusts in the works of the 00:12:35.20\00:12:38.59 law, does not see their need. 00:12:38.63\00:12:40.45 They feel the ability to meet their requirements of God 00:12:40.48\00:12:44.17 in their own strength and this is why verse 15 it says, 00:12:44.21\00:12:47.83 "we who are Jews by nature and not sinners of the Gentiles. " 00:12:47.86\00:12:51.07 The challenge was because Jews where religious felt that 00:12:51.11\00:12:54.28 they were above the Gentiles and they had some 00:12:54.31\00:12:56.29 righteousness in themselves, the way that too often Christians 00:12:56.33\00:12:59.60 today are tempted to feel that they have something 00:12:59.64\00:13:01.71 they really don't have. 00:13:01.75\00:13:03.03 Paul was trying to make a point, you are as much in need 00:13:03.06\00:13:05.96 of justification as the most common ungodly sinner. 00:13:05.99\00:13:09.56 But if we sense our need and we sense our guilt then 00:13:09.59\00:13:13.12 Jesus is willing and ready to justify us. 00:13:13.16\00:13:15.75 Absolutely right, it all comes down to realizing 00:13:15.78\00:13:18.54 our need of Christ. 00:13:18.57\00:13:19.82 Also Paul said in 1 Timothy 1:15, "Christ Jesus came 00:13:19.86\00:13:22.74 "into this world to save sinners of who I am chief. " 00:13:22.77\00:13:25.59 If you feel like the chief of sinners Jesus came for you. 00:13:25.62\00:13:28.07 Accept Him today. 00:13:28.11\00:13:30.19
