Welcome back to our study in the book of Galatians. 00:00:08.35\00:00:10.80 We are going to dive right back were we left off. 00:00:10.84\00:00:13.23 We were talking about the grace and peace that is given 00:00:13.26\00:00:16.76 to each one of us through God the Father and 00:00:16.79\00:00:18.62 our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:00:18.66\00:00:19.96 The apostle Paul, in Galatians 1:3 discusses this grace 00:00:20.00\00:00:25.44 and peace in a very brief way, just offering it. 00:00:25.47\00:00:29.30 I believe in what we need to spend a little more time 00:00:29.34\00:00:32.55 doing, where we were last time before the break, was 00:00:32.59\00:00:35.77 talking about these in a more flushed out way. 00:00:35.81\00:00:38.18 Right because this is Paul's standard salutation of 00:00:38.22\00:00:40.79 grace and peace and we can almost take it as a greeting 00:00:40.83\00:00:43.37 like Heh, how are you doing? 00:00:43.41\00:00:44.50 Instead of really grasping that he is expressing some 00:00:44.54\00:00:49.10 core gospel truth right here. 00:00:49.13\00:00:50.85 That's right. We talked about the grace of God being 00:00:50.88\00:00:53.29 the unmerited favor of God and at the same time that power 00:00:53.32\00:00:56.63 by which we are made alive and born-again through that 00:00:56.66\00:01:00.93 grace and it leaves the impression since none of us 00:01:00.96\00:01:04.69 deserve grace of God, and since none of us could merit 00:01:04.73\00:01:08.43 salvation then wouldn't everybody be saved? 00:01:08.46\00:01:12.03 Because God loves everyone an important verses that we 00:01:12.06\00:01:16.16 didn't look to in Ephesians 2: 8, 9 where it simply says 00:01:16.20\00:01:20.27 "that by grace we are saved through faith. " 00:01:20.30\00:01:24.53 So that brings in the choice of the human element. 00:01:24.57\00:01:27.86 In other words, the grace of God is offered to us freely. 00:01:27.89\00:01:31.59 The salvation of God is given to us freely, but our belief 00:01:31.62\00:01:35.29 in those promises, our belief in that grace of God to 00:01:35.32\00:01:38.53 change our hearts and lives is that faith by which we lay 00:01:38.56\00:01:41.73 hold of the grace of God. 00:01:41.76\00:01:43.41 So when we think about it in those terms we can then 00:01:43.44\00:01:48.43 reference Romans 5:1, where it says that having been 00:01:48.47\00:01:53.12 justified by faith, that faith by which we lay claim to 00:01:53.16\00:01:57.78 the grace of God, we have peace with God through 00:01:57.81\00:02:01.69 our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:02:01.73\00:02:02.94 Through that grace that is bringing us into harmony with 00:02:02.97\00:02:07.19 God no longer is our stubborn will preventing us from 00:02:07.22\00:02:11.41 having harmony with God, or peace with God. 00:02:11.44\00:02:13.76 That's right and we really need to flush that out 00:02:13.79\00:02:15.70 a little bit because the idea of peace with God has been 00:02:15.74\00:02:20.31 perverted into this concept that God is against me. 00:02:20.35\00:02:26.80 Because Jesus died for me, now God has found a way to 00:02:26.84\00:02:31.84 love me because of something Jesus did, because of 00:02:31.88\00:02:36.85 something I did as if God changes. 00:02:36.88\00:02:39.21 So the peace with God is something that happens because 00:02:39.25\00:02:42.89 God finally stops fighting, of course you know the 00:02:42.93\00:02:45.15 opposite of peace is war. 00:02:45.18\00:02:46.88 We were talking about a condition of peace, somebody 00:02:46.91\00:02:50.05 stops fighting and we would assume often times that it 00:02:50.08\00:02:53.18 must be God that has stopped fighting. 00:02:53.22\00:02:56.18 The reality is that when the gospel message comes out in 00:02:56.22\00:03:00.20 the salutation of Paul, "grace and peace from God the 00:03:00.23\00:03:04.18 "Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. " 00:03:04.22\00:03:06.15 What's happening is that the peace treaty is being 00:03:06.18\00:03:10.10 proclaimed from God's end, in essence God is saying, 00:03:10.13\00:03:14.02 I'm not holding anything against you, it makes 00:03:14.05\00:03:16.65 me think of the song of the 00:03:16.68\00:03:19.64 Angels when Jesus is born and the shepherds out 00:03:19.68\00:03:22.30 in the field in Luke chapter 2 where angels say, 00:03:22.34\00:03:25.71 "glory to God in the highest end on earth peace, 00:03:25.75\00:03:29.09 "goodwill toward men. " 00:03:29.13\00:03:30.77 In other words God is saying, I'm not fighting you, 00:03:30.81\00:03:33.59 but you have been fighting Me. 00:03:33.62\00:03:36.25 God invites us to lay down our weapons of warfare 00:03:36.28\00:03:40.30 and that is what Paul is talking about there Romans 5. 00:03:40.33\00:03:44.07 When we choose to lay down our weapons of warfare, 00:03:44.10\00:03:47.77 we receive justification by faith and have peace with God. 00:03:47.81\00:03:51.03 That's right, so we can surrender our will and lay 00:03:51.07\00:03:55.71 down our warfare, Jesus says my peace I give unto you. 00:03:55.75\00:04:00.40 So He is not wanting to fight with us, He's wanting us to 00:04:00.43\00:04:04.66 surrender our weapons so that we can be at peace with Him. 00:04:04.69\00:04:08.88 You know what I think about the idea of fighting God, 00:04:08.92\00:04:12.22 it brings me back to the apostle Paul. 00:04:12.25\00:04:14.81 If anybody knew what it was like to wrestle against the 00:04:14.84\00:04:19.49 grace and peace of God it was Paul himself before his 00:04:19.53\00:04:24.14 conversion and we can look at that briefly. 00:04:24.17\00:04:28.11 In Acts 9 we see a little picture of the apostle Paul's 00:04:28.15\00:04:34.84 warfare against God. 00:04:34.87\00:04:36.36 In Acts chapter 9 we see where Jesus meets Paul on the 00:04:36.39\00:04:41.59 road to Damascus and He says, "I am Jesus whom you are 00:04:41.62\00:04:46.50 "persecuting," I'm reading in Chapter 9:5, "it is hard for 00:04:46.54\00:04:51.38 "you to kick against the goads. " 00:04:51.42\00:04:53.33 Now a goad was a pointed instrument used to prod on an 00:04:53.36\00:04:57.24 animal. - right and if an animal didn't want to go forward 00:04:57.28\00:05:01.12 and was aware it was being prodded it would kick back 00:05:01.16\00:05:03.75 at the goad trying to get away from prodding him forward. 00:05:03.79\00:05:06.35 So apparently something was prodding Paul forward. 00:05:06.39\00:05:09.11 The Lord Jesus was saying, hey I'm prodding you forward 00:05:09.14\00:05:11.99 but you are fighting Me. 00:05:12.03\00:05:13.33 You are fighting against Me and so we have this picture 00:05:13.36\00:05:17.07 being painted, now how did that happen 00:05:17.10\00:05:18.69 or when did it happen? 00:05:18.72\00:05:19.74 I think one of the most powerful places were I am just 00:05:19.77\00:05:22.47 sure the Holy Spirit was prodding the conscience of the 00:05:22.51\00:05:25.58 apostle Paul was in Acts chapter 7 just before that. 00:05:25.62\00:05:29.96 In Acts chapter 7 Paul, is there called Saul before his 00:05:30.00\00:05:35.21 conversion, was standing by while the first Christian 00:05:35.24\00:05:40.39 martyr here, Stephen a great deacon, was giving an account 00:05:40.42\00:05:45.76 of the history of Israel and the experience of Israel and 00:05:45.80\00:05:51.11 what they had done to oppose the will of God. 00:05:51.14\00:05:53.72 How they had resisted the Holy Spirit and the leaders 00:05:53.76\00:05:58.68 got so upset that they stoned Stephen. 00:05:58.71\00:06:02.10 Now in the middle of this stoning something amazing 00:06:02.14\00:06:04.76 happens, Stephen looks up and sees Jesus. 00:06:04.79\00:06:10.17 He makes this appeal, or this plea or prayer if you will. 00:06:10.21\00:06:17.31 He says Lord charged not this sin against them. 00:06:17.35\00:06:20.71 Now can you imagine being the apostle Paul and you are 00:06:20.74\00:06:24.20 ordering this stoning and you look in the one that should 00:06:24.24\00:06:27.71 be angry with you, should be hateful toward you and saying, 00:06:27.74\00:06:31.18 "Lord do not charge this sin against them?" 00:06:31.21\00:06:34.09 I'm telling you his conscience had to have been pricked. 00:06:34.13\00:06:38.58 Instead of surrendering his heart, he fought all the 00:06:38.62\00:06:42.40 harder because right after that in Chapter 8 this great 00:06:42.43\00:06:45.94 persecution arose because the apostle Paul began to more 00:06:45.97\00:06:49.23 vehemently go after the Christians than ever before. 00:06:49.27\00:06:52.91 That's right, so obviously he's kicking against the goads 00:06:52.95\00:06:56.56 and it's obvious. 00:06:56.60\00:06:57.61 What's fascinating in the context of this is that we 00:06:57.64\00:07:02.27 mention the controversy over the book of Galatians today, 00:07:02.30\00:07:04.76 where there are Christians who sincerely believe 00:07:04.79\00:07:08.04 that the gospel is saying the law doesn't matter 00:07:08.07\00:07:11.28 to Christians anymore. 00:07:11.32\00:07:12.71 Only what we find Paul fighting against the gospel of 00:07:12.75\00:07:16.62 Stephen that Paul was fighting against in Stephen's 00:07:16.66\00:07:20.99 address in Acts 7:53 he arraigns those Jewish leaders 00:07:21.03\00:07:25.36 and says to them, you receive the law through the 00:07:25.39\00:07:29.12 direction of angels and you have not kept it. 00:07:29.15\00:07:32.81 So Stephen's gospel arraigned them for lawbreaking and Paul 00:07:32.85\00:07:37.56 got incensed and infuriated when it was pointed out that he 00:07:37.59\00:07:41.60 was not obeying the law of God, prior to his conversion. 00:07:41.64\00:07:45.57 So far doing away with the law of God, he was convicted of the 00:07:45.61\00:07:49.97 fact that he wasn't keeping the law of God 00:07:50.00\00:07:51.67 through Stephen's testimony. 00:07:51.70\00:07:53.42 Hmmm, that is exactly right. 00:07:53.45\00:07:55.10 In fact it was last thing that was said before they said 00:07:55.13\00:07:59.23 that's it, and they decided to stone him. 00:07:59.26\00:08:02.52 We could take no more, he challenged them and looked 00:08:02.55\00:08:05.10 right at them and said, you receive the law by the 00:08:05.13\00:08:07.64 direction of angels and have not kept it. 00:08:07.68\00:08:09.58 That was too much for them to handle and I think when 00:08:09.62\00:08:13.31 you look at this idea of the apostle Paul fighting this 00:08:13.34\00:08:17.28 conviction, you understand that Paul knew what it was like 00:08:17.31\00:08:21.22 to have a will that was stubborn. 00:08:21.25\00:08:24.29 To have what the Bible calls the flesh, a carnal nature 00:08:24.32\00:08:28.48 that resisted the will of God. 00:08:28.52\00:08:30.79 It didn't want to humble itself, it didn't want to admit 00:08:30.82\00:08:34.57 that it was wrong and so that hard heart was seen in the 00:08:34.60\00:08:37.68 apostle Paul, that is why the Lord Jesus said, it is hard 00:08:37.71\00:08:40.76 for you to kick against the goads. 00:08:40.79\00:08:42.06 But what the apostle brings out later in Galatians 00:08:42.09\00:08:45.04 Chapter 1, is a powerful couple of statements. 00:08:45.08\00:08:48.53 I would like to read these in Galatians 1:23. 00:08:48.56\00:08:51.94 "But they were hearing only," the Christian churches, 00:08:51.98\00:08:57.84 "he who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith he 00:08:57.88\00:09:02.80 "once tried to destroy. And they glorify God in me. " 00:09:02.83\00:09:07.37 No wonder they glorify God because here was enemy number 00:09:07.41\00:09:11.91 one of the Christian Church. 00:09:11.95\00:09:13.60 He was the one that they fear, the one that 00:09:13.63\00:09:16.01 they knew was after them. 00:09:16.04\00:09:17.67 He was well know as the one that was opposed to Christians 00:09:17.71\00:09:21.86 and now not only does he become a believer, but he turns 00:09:21.89\00:09:26.01 from enemy number one to evangelist number one. 00:09:26.04\00:09:29.88 If anybody understood the power of a changed life, 00:09:29.92\00:09:33.47 the power of the Gospel, it was the apostle Paul. 00:09:33.50\00:09:38.37 Absolutely, and so when we go back this is how he is 00:09:38.40\00:09:42.51 presenting Grace and peace and then he talks about how 00:09:42.55\00:09:46.29 the Lord Jesus gave Himself for our sins that He might 00:09:46.33\00:09:50.04 deliver us, and that is what he is talking 00:09:50.07\00:09:52.13 about this deliverance. 00:09:52.17\00:09:53.53 I want to touch on this giving, 00:09:53.57\00:09:56.84 Jesus giving Himself for our sins where the Grace of God 00:09:56.87\00:10:00.69 is magnified, there is a transaction taking place here. 00:10:00.73\00:10:04.52 You are giving one thing for another thing. 00:10:04.55\00:10:06.70 It's like when you go to the store and you give money and 00:10:06.73\00:10:08.15 you get back a certain product. 00:10:08.19\00:10:09.99 From a healing perspective, if you go out and pay a 00:10:10.02\00:10:14.12 substantial amount of money, pay $100 for something. 00:10:14.16\00:10:18.19 If you get that thing home and it ends up being a piece of 00:10:18.23\00:10:21.84 junk, whatever it is, you are going to find a use for it. 00:10:21.87\00:10:24.41 You are not just going to throw it away, it costs you 00:10:24.44\00:10:26.94 $100, use it as a paperweight or something. 00:10:26.98\00:10:29.07 A coaster - a coaster or whatever because you paid 00:10:29.11\00:10:35.13 that money for it. 00:10:35.16\00:10:36.61 Here is a transaction that is made where God has paid a 00:10:36.65\00:10:40.37 price that is an infinite price, the greatest price that 00:10:40.41\00:10:43.51 has never been paid and He knew what He was getting. 00:10:43.55\00:10:46.75 And once more it doesn't say He gave Himself for us, 00:10:46.79\00:10:49.96 it says He gave Himself for our sins. 00:10:49.99\00:10:52.77 So He gave Himself for we are often times tempted to 00:10:52.80\00:10:55.97 say, I hear that God loves me but could He accept 00:10:56.00\00:10:59.13 me because of my sins? 00:10:59.17\00:11:01.01 Your sins are what He bought. - and that is right. 00:11:01.04\00:11:03.45 Somebody once said that if you go to the store and 00:11:03.48\00:11:06.18 give money for something and they don't give you 00:11:06.22\00:11:09.52 what you paid for, you will call them a crook 00:11:09.56\00:11:12.83 or something else. - right, right. 00:11:12.86\00:11:15.58 Jesus paid for our sins, 00:11:15.61\00:11:17.58 why don't we give them to Him? 00:11:17.62\00:11:19.43 We need to surrender that which He paid for and to think we 00:11:19.47\00:11:24.17 aren't worthy enough to give Him that is to 00:11:24.21\00:11:28.59 ignore the fact that He knew what He was getting 00:11:28.63\00:11:31.08 when He bought us. 00:11:31.12\00:11:32.15 Right, that is what Grace is all about. 00:11:32.18\00:11:33.44 So when we look at the apostle Paul's statement here 00:11:33.47\00:11:35.91 "Grace to you and peace from God the Father, 00:11:35.95\00:11:38.90 "and the Lord Jesus Christ. " 00:11:38.94\00:11:41.03 The apostle Paul is making a point that God is 00:11:41.07\00:11:45.84 offering to us, in spite of the fact that we are sinful. 00:11:45.87\00:11:50.26 In the full light of the fact that we are sinful, 00:11:50.30\00:11:54.95 He is offering grace and peace to us. 00:11:54.99\00:11:57.65 How does it come to us? 00:11:57.68\00:11:58.83 Through the Lord Jesus Christ who gave Himself for our 00:11:58.87\00:12:02.41 sins, the reason that we can fully accept this gospel 00:12:02.45\00:12:05.96 is because the Lord Jesus has made a trade. 00:12:05.99\00:12:08.11 He has taken those sins and He is more than willing 00:12:08.15\00:12:11.41 to take those sins when we give ourselves to Him. 00:12:11.45\00:12:15.22 But it goes on and it says, "that He might deliver us 00:12:15.25\00:12:18.98 "from the present evil. " This present evil. 00:12:19.02\00:12:22.26 I believe that this last portion here is really 00:12:22.29\00:12:25.99 hitting on the issue that was existing here in 00:12:26.02\00:12:29.68 the Galatian church. 00:12:29.72\00:12:30.69 There are many people who believe that, that gospel was 00:12:30.70\00:12:34.43 so that we could continue in evil. 00:12:34.46\00:12:36.50 Jesus died so we don't have to keep the law. 00:12:36.54\00:12:38.99 The apostle Paul, right here in his salutation is 00:12:39.03\00:12:42.60 opposing that very thought by saying, no the Gospel 00:12:42.64\00:12:46.39 is so that you can be rescued from your life of sin. 00:12:46.43\00:12:50.15 The Gospel is so that you can be delivered from 00:12:50.18\00:12:53.21 this present evil age. 00:12:53.25\00:12:54.50 That is right, Amen! So that is what as we open 00:12:54.54\00:12:57.80 up the book of Galatians and dig into, that is 00:12:57.84\00:13:01.03 what we are going to unpack and see that deliverance 00:13:01.06\00:13:03.74 from many different angles here. 00:13:03.78\00:13:04.94 The apostle Paul wants to make it very clear to us 00:13:04.98\00:13:07.03 because he wants us to experience the deliverance 00:13:07.07\00:13:09.09 that he experienced. 00:13:09.12\00:13:11.09 It is a blessed, beautiful message that we find 00:13:11.12\00:13:14.68 in the book of Galatians and so we are excited as we 00:13:14.71\00:13:17.15 continue on through this series. 00:13:17.19\00:13:18.90 We hope you will continue to join us. 00:13:18.93\00:13:20.43 Thanks for being with us today and I hope 00:13:20.47\00:13:21.93 you will tune in next time. - Amen! 00:13:21.97\00:13:24.41
