Welcome back to Books of the Book and we have been 00:00:07.94\00:00:09.87 studying the book of Galatians and we are in Galatians 00:00:09.90\00:00:11.81 Chapter 6 and I want to look again at verse 12. 00:00:11.84\00:00:16.38 The apostle Paul is making a point that these false 00:00:16.41\00:00:20.52 teachers who had seduced the Galatian church wanted 00:00:20.55\00:00:24.62 "to compel them to be circumcised only that they may 00:00:24.65\00:00:27.89 "not suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. " 00:00:27.92\00:00:30.79 We are talking about the tendency Jim, that we have 00:00:30.83\00:00:35.06 to want to avoid living in such a way that draws out 00:00:35.10\00:00:39.37 the opposition of the world. 00:00:39.40\00:00:40.74 We talked about in 1 Timothy, sorry 2 Timothy 3:12 00:00:40.77\00:00:44.47 where it says all who live godly in Christ Jesus shall 00:00:44.51\00:00:48.24 suffer persecution and I think there are probably a 00:00:48.28\00:00:51.85 our viewers that are aware, I have talked and read many 00:00:51.88\00:00:55.42 articles from many different denominations and 00:00:55.48\00:00:58.75 nondenominational churches that have recognized a 00:00:58.79\00:01:02.66 tendency in recent years that Christianity has become 00:01:02.69\00:01:06.49 more and more secularized. 00:01:06.53\00:01:08.03 The reason is because, we will say we are just trying 00:01:08.06\00:01:12.73 to be more accessible to the world. 00:01:12.77\00:01:15.87 Trying to reach the postmodern world and these types 00:01:15.90\00:01:18.97 of things, but I fear the reality is just exactly what 00:01:19.04\00:01:22.08 Paul is saying here, we do not want to suffer 00:01:22.11\00:01:24.35 persecution for our belief. 00:01:24.38\00:01:25.71 So some of the things that have happened is social 00:01:25.75\00:01:28.55 drinking has become more acceptable in the Christian 00:01:28.58\00:01:31.45 world where it used to be that drinking was something 00:01:31.52\00:01:33.92 a Christian when do, they didn't smoke, they didn't 00:01:33.96\00:01:36.66 drink and now they say that was back in the old days. 00:01:36.69\00:01:38.89 It's a lot easier when you are out to work with someone 00:01:38.93\00:01:41.10 to just do what they are doing and you can justify 00:01:41.13\00:01:44.47 that by saying I'm just trying to fit in and you 00:01:44.50\00:01:47.80 avoid the persecution. 00:01:47.84\00:01:49.17 That's right, and secular music, rock concerts, and 00:01:49.20\00:01:53.07 there's Christian rock today and things like that 00:01:53.11\00:01:57.61 honestly has concerned the number of people because 00:01:57.65\00:02:01.68 it used to be these things were considered only 00:02:01.72\00:02:05.62 secular and worldly and now they are finding their way 00:02:05.65\00:02:10.03 into the church and again I fear whether it be fashionable 00:02:10.06\00:02:14.36 dress, or whatever it happens to be. 00:02:14.36\00:02:18.23 It is a desire to avoid that persecution that comes from 00:02:18.27\00:02:25.11 being different from the world. 00:02:25.14\00:02:27.34 This is what Paul ascribes this false teaching of the 00:02:27.38\00:02:31.45 Galatians, these false teachers, these Judaizing teachers 00:02:31.48\00:02:35.52 that is what he ascribes it to. 00:02:35.55\00:02:37.05 Their desire to really avoid the offense of the cross. 00:02:37.09\00:02:40.42 That is exactly right, and then right after saying that 00:02:40.49\00:02:43.79 in verse 12, which is where we have been reading. 00:02:43.83\00:02:46.23 It says that they try to compel you to be circumcised 00:02:46.26\00:02:48.60 only that they may not suffer persecution. 00:02:48.63\00:02:50.93 In verse 13 it says, "for not even those who are 00:02:50.97\00:02:54.24 "circumcised keep the law, but they desire to have you " 00:02:54.27\00:02:57.07 circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. " 00:02:57.11\00:02:59.47 He is trying to help them to see, be careful who you are 00:02:59.51\00:03:04.51 trusting here, back in the days of Jesus he said to those 00:03:04.55\00:03:09.45 who are at that time following and yet critically 00:03:09.48\00:03:12.75 analyzing his ministry, he said to speak about the law 00:03:12.79\00:03:16.86 of Moses yet none of you keeps the law. 00:03:16.89\00:03:20.20 Why is it that you try to kill me? 00:03:20.23\00:03:22.33 They were in the process of planning to kill the 00:03:22.36\00:03:25.60 Son of God and yet they were promoting themselves as 00:03:25.63\00:03:28.80 law keepers and so here that is what the 00:03:28.84\00:03:30.87 apostle Paul is saying. 00:03:30.91\00:03:32.24 These people that you are trusting are pushing 00:03:32.27\00:03:35.24 circumcision, but they are not keeping the law themselves. 00:03:35.28\00:03:38.18 There are various different ways that we could look at 00:03:38.21\00:03:41.28 that, but is just another point to show that this idea 00:03:41.32\00:03:44.82 is that circumcision was a substitute for obedience. 00:03:44.85\00:03:47.76 That is what was really happening with these false 00:03:47.79\00:03:50.13 teachers. - that's right and I think that is an 00:03:50.19\00:03:52.46 important point that our viewers need to understand. 00:03:52.49\00:03:56.73 The concept from so many is that these Galatians were 00:03:56.77\00:04:01.10 wanting to go with this gospel of circumcision, 00:04:01.14\00:04:03.94 they were obedient. 00:04:03.97\00:04:05.97 And repeatedly Paul has brought out that they were 00:04:06.01\00:04:08.91 everything but obedient, they did not keep the law. 00:04:08.94\00:04:11.41 He makes that point very clear here, they were not 00:04:11.45\00:04:13.95 law keepers because they were trusting in the flesh. 00:04:13.98\00:04:16.45 So he builds on that in verse 14 where he says, 00:04:16.48\00:04:21.42 "but God forbid that I should boast except" because 00:04:21.46\00:04:26.39 they were boasting in the flesh, but he says, 00:04:26.43\00:04:28.93 "God for bit that I should boast except in the 00:04:28.96\00:04:31.43 "cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has 00:04:31.50\00:04:35.70 "been crucified to me, and I to the world. " 00:04:35.74\00:04:39.37 That's powerful, and this verse is an allusion to an 00:04:39.41\00:04:44.45 Old Testament verse in the book of Jeremiah and 00:04:44.48\00:04:48.05 maybe we can turn there to Jeremiah 9:23 because the 00:04:48.08\00:04:51.99 apostle Paul seems to be taking the language directly 00:04:52.02\00:04:56.29 from Jeremiah and in verse 23 of Jeremiah 9 is says, 00:04:56.32\00:05:00.53 "thus says the Lord: let not the wise man glory in his 00:05:00.56\00:05:04.17 "wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, 00:05:04.20\00:05:07.54 "nor let the rich man glory in his riches; but let him 00:05:07.57\00:05:10.97 "who glories glory in this, that he understands and 00:05:11.01\00:05:14.38 "knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising loving- 00:05:14.41\00:05:17.38 "kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. 00:05:17.41\00:05:20.32 "For in these I delight, says the Lord. " 00:05:20.38\00:05:23.25 So that is a very clear parallel where he said I am 00:05:23.28\00:05:26.49 not going to glory anything, the apostle Paul said. 00:05:26.52\00:05:29.76 Except for the cross of Jesus Christ and here he is 00:05:29.79\00:05:32.69 drawing from the fact that back in the book of Jeremiah 00:05:32.73\00:05:36.43 it tells us not to glory in wisdom, or might, or riches, 00:05:36.46\00:05:40.17 but only to glory in knowing Me. 00:05:40.20\00:05:42.90 That is a powerful thought, in other words the cross of 00:05:42.94\00:05:46.81 Jesus Christ is how we come to know God. 00:05:46.84\00:05:50.61 It is through the cross that we find out that Jesus Christ 00:05:50.65\00:05:54.28 wants a personal relationship with us. 00:05:54.32\00:05:56.32 That He is willing to give His life for us. 00:05:56.35\00:05:58.25 The love of God is revealed through the cross of Christ. 00:05:58.29\00:06:01.69 So if we want to know God intimately, we find that in the 00:06:01.72\00:06:05.16 cross and if we can know and understand God, that is what 00:06:05.19\00:06:08.53 we should glory in. 00:06:08.56\00:06:09.90 All of these other things are given to us by God which is 00:06:09.93\00:06:13.57 why many times those who are wise, those who are mighty, 00:06:13.60\00:06:17.51 those who are rich are not the ones who come in through 00:06:17.54\00:06:21.11 the Gospel and there is one verse or passage in the 00:06:21.14\00:06:24.65 New Testament that touches on this. 00:06:24.68\00:06:26.01 I thought maybe I could just read that together with you. 00:06:26.05\00:06:29.38 1 Corinthians, so if you go to the New Testament Mark, 00:06:29.45\00:06:33.36 Luke, Matthew, John, Acts, Romans and 1 Corinthians. 00:06:33.39\00:06:37.89 In Corinthians 1:26 it says, "for you see your calling" 00:06:37.93\00:06:41.63 this is the apostle Paul again, "for you see your calling 00:06:41.66\00:06:44.80 "brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, 00:06:44.83\00:06:48.57 "not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God 00:06:48.60\00:06:51.71 "has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to 00:06:51.74\00:06:54.81 "shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of 00:06:54.84\00:06:57.45 "the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 00:06:57.48\00:07:00.98 "and the base things" that word base means insignificant, 00:07:01.02\00:07:04.35 insignificant things, " of the world and the things which 00:07:04.39\00:07:07.56 "our despised God has chosen, and the things which are 00:07:07.59\00:07:10.53 "not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no 00:07:10.56\00:07:13.46 "flesh should glory in His presence. 00:07:13.50\00:07:16.03 God wants us recognize our need and so those who end up 00:07:16.06\00:07:21.57 being called, He calls everyone but those that respond 00:07:21.60\00:07:26.21 to call end up being those who recognize that they are 00:07:26.24\00:07:30.38 not the smartest, not the richest, not the most popular. 00:07:30.41\00:07:34.32 In many people's eyes they may be insignificant, but they 00:07:34.35\00:07:38.42 seem to be the ones who respond to the call to come to the 00:07:38.45\00:07:42.46 Gospel feast because they won't glory in the presence 00:07:42.49\00:07:46.63 of God, and God needs all the glory to come to Him 00:07:46.66\00:07:50.67 because He is the one who has provided all these things 00:07:50.70\00:07:54.50 for us, if we take glory for ourselves, if we have some 00:07:54.54\00:07:57.71 sort of sense that we are greater or better than others 00:07:57.74\00:08:01.48 then we can never truly understand what the cross of 00:08:01.54\00:08:05.18 Jesus Christ means to us. 00:08:05.21\00:08:06.82 You know Jim that is the thing about this. 00:08:06.85\00:08:09.15 When we are talking about not boasting in anything 00:08:09.18\00:08:13.89 that is in us, it is hard for us sometimes to constantly 00:08:13.92\00:08:18.93 admit that in my flesh dwells no good thing. 00:08:18.96\00:08:22.03 Then we tend to want to think that we are worthless in 00:08:22.06\00:08:25.70 God's sight and it is a strange dichotomy where God wants 00:08:25.73\00:08:29.34 us to realize this is your fallen condition. 00:08:29.37\00:08:31.51 But I love you where you are and I am going to do for you 00:08:31.54\00:08:35.24 what you can't do for yourself. 00:08:35.31\00:08:36.81 I believe the apostle Paul really magnifies that point 00:08:36.85\00:08:41.65 in 2 Corinthians 12, and here Paul sharing his own experience 00:08:41.68\00:08:46.45 and this is one of the most precious passages. 00:08:46.49\00:08:48.72 It is one of the most encouraging passages to me in 00:08:48.76\00:08:50.43 Scripture, this has been a blessing in my experience and 00:08:50.46\00:08:53.29 probably many of our viewers. 00:08:53.33\00:08:54.73 It says in 2 Corinthians 12:9, Jesus is speaking to Paul 00:08:54.76\00:09:00.14 I have read letters here in my Bible. 00:09:00.17\00:09:02.04 It says, "and He said to me, My grace is sufficient for 00:09:02.07\00:09:05.27 "you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. 00:09:05.31\00:09:11.68 "Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my 00:09:11.71\00:09:17.99 "infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. " 00:09:18.02\00:09:22.46 So the idea here is that you could say, sometimes people 00:09:22.49\00:09:26.09 say I'm not worth anything, I'm not good at anything. 00:09:26.13\00:09:29.60 Praise the Lord because now I can boast in the fact that 00:09:29.63\00:09:33.10 in my weakness God's strength is made perfect. 00:09:33.13\00:09:37.77 He goes on in verse 10 to say, "if therefore I take 00:09:37.81\00:09:40.98 "pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, 00:09:41.01\00:09:44.31 "in persecutions, in distress, for Christ's sake. 00:09:44.35\00:09:47.58 "For when I am weak, then I am strong. " 00:09:47.62\00:09:51.45 Why? Because when I am weak I recognize my need of 00:09:51.49\00:09:54.56 Christ and cling more firmly to Him. 00:09:54.59\00:09:57.09 Right, and when that power of Christ is resting upon 00:09:57.13\00:09:59.86 him it can't be denied. 00:09:59.89\00:10:03.63 The power of a changed life, taking someone who 00:10:03.67\00:10:07.67 is weak, taking someone who is sinful, taking someone 00:10:07.74\00:10:12.84 with none of this high exalted stature in the eyes of 00:10:12.91\00:10:17.81 the world, is the very evidence of Christ's power than 00:10:17.88\00:10:21.88 the Gospel of Christ is worth all the world to us. 00:10:21.92\00:10:25.35 So it is very weakness that we have that causes Christ 00:10:25.39\00:10:28.79 to be uplifted. - that is right! 00:10:28.82\00:10:30.29 You know I think we need to go back briefly, to Jeremiah 00:10:30.33\00:10:34.60 Chapter 9 where you recall that we were looking at a 00:10:34.63\00:10:38.70 passage where the apostle Paul seemed to be drawing his 00:10:38.73\00:10:42.54 language from and we talked in verse 23 and 24 about 00:10:42.57\00:10:46.54 how we shouldn't glory in wisdom, or might, or riches, 00:10:46.57\00:10:50.45 and then in verse 24 it said we should glory in the fact 00:10:50.48\00:10:54.32 that we understand and know Him. 00:10:54.35\00:10:56.12 But then notice verse 25, and the apostle Paul I believe 00:10:56.15\00:11:00.12 purposefully is drawing the language out of this passage 00:11:00.16\00:11:03.99 because his hearers probably knew exactly 00:11:04.03\00:11:06.90 where this was going. 00:11:06.93\00:11:08.23 At least the Jewish Christians in that day would recognize 00:11:08.26\00:11:12.53 exactly what that language was coming from. 00:11:12.60\00:11:15.24 Jeremiah 9:25, "we hope the days are coming, says the 00:11:15.27\00:11:18.81 "Lord that I will punish all who are circumcised 00:11:18.84\00:11:21.98 "with the uncircumcised. " 00:11:22.01\00:11:24.31 Now what that means is that the apostle Paul was drawing 00:11:24.35\00:11:28.68 language that was connected with circumcision. 00:11:28.72\00:11:30.89 It was the exact issue that he was dealing with in Galatia 00:11:30.92\00:11:33.76 He was essentially saying you can't glory in circumcision. 00:11:33.79\00:11:36.59 Here there was no distinction made even back here in 00:11:36.62\00:11:40.06 Jeremiah. -well he says further in the next verse 26, 00:11:40.13\00:11:42.86 "for these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house 00:11:42.90\00:11:45.67 "of Israel are uncircumcised in heart. " 00:11:45.70\00:11:47.67 That's right, that's right so again circumcision is 00:11:47.74\00:11:50.54 nothing, uncircumcision is nothing, keeping the 00:11:50.57\00:11:53.34 Commandments of God is what matters. 00:11:53.38\00:11:54.91 It is interesting sometimes when people hear Galatians 00:11:54.94\00:11:57.88 I have met people who have made this point that when you 00:11:57.95\00:12:00.78 want to talk about the importance of obeying God you 00:12:00.82\00:12:03.59 are teaching a Christ plus something gospel. 00:12:03.62\00:12:06.02 We have already gone over Galatians Chapter 3 of where 00:12:06.05\00:12:08.99 it says the Gospel is the schoolmaster to lead us unto 00:12:09.02\00:12:11.99 Christ, you take the law out and you don't need Christ. 00:12:12.03\00:12:15.13 You don't need the Gospel, what is the good news for a 00:12:15.16\00:12:18.23 person who is not condemned by the law of God? 00:12:18.27\00:12:20.07 The whole idea is that the law and the Gospel go hand-in- 00:12:20.10\00:12:23.04 hand so the price plus some thing gospel, no the Gospel is 00:12:23.07\00:12:25.97 the answer to the condemnation that comes from law. 00:12:26.01\00:12:29.04 If we are justified by faith, we know that faith 00:12:29.08\00:12:32.05 establishes the law, so there is no adding the law to 00:12:32.08\00:12:35.98 Christ because the law is embodied in Christ. 00:12:36.02\00:12:38.72 If you have Christ in the heart than the law is going to 00:12:38.79\00:12:41.49 be lived out in our life. 00:12:41.52\00:12:42.96 You know Jim, Paul hits the heart of the matter in 00:12:42.99\00:12:45.56 Philippians 3:3 where he writes, "for we are the 00:12:45.59\00:12:48.73 "circumcision who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice 00:12:48.76\00:12:51.77 "in Christ Jesus and have no confidence in the flesh. " 00:12:51.80\00:12:54.80 That is an excellent verse. 00:12:54.84\00:12:56.37 You know we have come to the end of our study of the 00:12:56.40\00:12:59.27 book of Galatians and I can't think of no better way to 00:12:59.31\00:13:01.81 conclude what the apostle Paul was trying to tell those 00:13:01.84\00:13:04.88 believers, rejoice in Christ Jesus and that is the heart 00:13:04.91\00:13:07.88 of the Gospel and these believers have begun to put 00:13:07.92\00:13:10.82 confidence in the flesh and sought to live the Christian 00:13:10.89\00:13:13.86 life without a union with Christ. 00:13:13.89\00:13:16.02 But what that union with Christ then the Spirit of God 00:13:16.06\00:13:19.23 comes in and being born of the Spirit of God we can 00:13:19.26\00:13:22.30 live out the law that they were so zealously trying to 00:13:22.33\00:13:25.37 keep but never could. 00:13:25.40\00:13:26.97 Thank you for joining us and may God bless you! 00:13:27.00\00:13:29.47
