Welcome to Books of the Book, I am Pastor Mark Howard 00:00:22.28\00:00:24.62 Pastor of the Emmanuel Institute of evangelism for the 00:00:24.65\00:00:26.65 Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventist as well 00:00:26.72\00:00:28.62 as the Pastor for the Gobels Seventh-day Adventist church 00:00:28.66\00:00:30.79 in Gobels Michigan and I am here at my co-host, 00:00:30.83\00:00:32.96 my brother Jim. 00:00:32.99\00:00:34.30 Yes, my name is Jim Howard and I am the Pastor of the 00:00:34.36\00:00:36.50 Detroit Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist Church and 00:00:36.53\00:00:39.07 South Lyon Church Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:39.10\00:00:40.90 both in Michigan. 00:00:40.94\00:00:42.30 And we have been studying the book of Galatians, we are 00:00:42.34\00:00:45.71 actually going to conclude our study today in Galatians 00:00:45.77\00:00:49.81 Chapter 6 and it has been fantastic message the apostle 00:00:49.88\00:00:54.05 Paul has been delivering here about the one and 00:00:54.08\00:00:56.12 only true gospel. 00:00:56.15\00:00:57.49 Jim, he caps it off with his heart appeal to the Galatian 00:00:57.52\00:01:03.32 believers, this church he raised up. 00:01:03.39\00:01:06.73 We are going to Galatians Chapter 6 and if you have your 00:01:06.76\00:01:10.33 Bible nearby go ahead and grab it and turn with us in 00:01:10.37\00:01:13.77 your Bible to the New Testament book of Galatians. 00:01:13.80\00:01:16.60 You go to the New Testament Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, 00:01:16.64\00:01:19.57 Acts, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians and then Galatians. 00:01:19.64\00:01:23.01 We are going to Galatians Chapter 6 and we're going to 00:01:23.04\00:01:26.38 start in verse 11. 00:01:26.41\00:01:28.05 Galatians 6:11 the apostle Paul says, "see what large 00:01:28.08\00:01:32.89 "letters I have written to you with my own hand!" 00:01:32.92\00:01:37.49 Initially as we read that Jim, it doesn't communicate 00:01:37.53\00:01:42.00 a lot, what is he talking about? 00:01:42.06\00:01:45.97 - what are these large letters? - Right! 00:01:46.00\00:01:47.97 So he's writing something and was he boasting in his writing? 00:01:48.04\00:01:50.64 When we realized what the background is here it really 00:01:50.67\00:01:56.24 tells us a lot about the apostle Paul. 00:01:56.28\00:01:57.85 You see Paul had a challenge of some sort, evidently 00:01:57.88\00:02:02.48 with his eye sight and if we go back to 2 Corinthians 00:02:02.52\00:02:07.02 in Chapter 12 Paul talks about having 00:02:07.06\00:02:08.79 a thorn in the flesh. - right! 00:02:08.82\00:02:10.39 Most scholars believe that that thorn in the flesh 00:02:10.43\00:02:13.23 had something to do with his impaired eyesight after 00:02:13.26\00:02:15.96 viewing the Lord Jesus glorified on the road to Damascus. 00:02:16.00\00:02:19.97 We pick up a little bit of that idea in the book of 00:02:20.00\00:02:24.27 Galatians 4:15 where he was talking about the Galatian 00:02:24.31\00:02:28.91 believers and how much they had at one time been willing 00:02:28.94\00:02:33.52 to sacrifice for him. 00:02:33.55\00:02:34.88 He says in Galatians 4:15, "what then was the blessing you 00:02:34.92\00:02:38.29 "enjoyed? For I bear you witness, that if possible, 00:02:38.32\00:02:41.96 "you would have plucked out your own eyes and given 00:02:41.99\00:02:45.59 "then to me. " So the idea was there was something 00:02:45.63\00:02:49.13 with his eyes that were impaired. 00:02:49.16\00:02:52.33 Something else that we find is that Paul often had his 00:02:52.37\00:02:55.34 letters written by a scribe, but then he would sign 00:02:55.37\00:02:58.31 them with his own hand. 00:02:58.34\00:02:59.67 For example 1 Corinthians 16:21, if we turn there we 00:02:59.71\00:03:04.88 see, notice it says here, "the salutation with my 00:03:04.91\00:03:10.35 "own hand-Paul's. " 00:03:10.39\00:03:13.02 In other words he would have somebody else write the 00:03:13.05\00:03:15.36 letter and then he would sign it, evidently because 00:03:15.39\00:03:17.76 with his in paired eyesight it was harder for him, 00:03:17.79\00:03:21.13 he didn't have glasses so when he was trying to write 00:03:21.16\00:03:23.90 these things out it was hard for him to focus on what 00:03:23.93\00:03:26.63 he was writing, so someone else would write and 00:03:26.67\00:03:28.84 he would sign it. - just to give the authenticity! 00:03:28.87\00:03:30.97 - just to give an authenticity. 00:03:31.01\00:03:32.34 So when we coming into Galatians 6:11 and he says, 00:03:32.37\00:03:36.04 "see with what large letters I have written to you. " 00:03:36.08\00:03:39.25 In other words in order for him to see what he was 00:03:39.28\00:03:42.42 writing, he had to write really big. 00:03:42.45\00:03:43.89 His point to the Galatians is that I have not had 00:03:43.92\00:03:46.76 somebody else write this letter, I'm not just signing it. 00:03:46.79\00:03:49.19 I myself have written this whole letter. 00:03:49.26\00:03:52.06 It's communicating to us the burden that 00:03:52.09\00:03:54.86 Paul had for these people. 00:03:54.93\00:03:56.56 If we continue there in Galatians 6:12, he starts 00:03:56.60\00:04:03.30 entering deeper into this appeal. 00:04:03.34\00:04:06.17 It says, "as many as desire to make a good showing in 00:04:06.24\00:04:09.84 "the flesh, these would compel you to be circumcised. " 00:04:09.88\00:04:13.48 He's talking about these Judaizing Christians and the 00:04:13.52\00:04:17.05 theme of our discussion through- out the study of Galatians 00:04:17.09\00:04:20.02 who came in with a perverted gospel in which they said 00:04:20.06\00:04:24.13 you can believe in Jesus Christ but if you really want 00:04:24.16\00:04:28.20 to be saved you will have to be circumcised. 00:04:28.23\00:04:30.27 Circumcision became somewhat of a substitute for faith 00:04:30.33\00:04:33.57 in Christ, a substitute of genuine obedience. 00:04:33.60\00:04:36.14 Then he says, "these who will compel you to be 00:04:36.17\00:04:38.64 "circumcised, only that they may not suffer persecution 00:04:38.67\00:04:42.78 "for the cross of Christ. For not even those who are 00:04:42.81\00:04:46.18 "circumcised keep the law, but they desired to have 00:04:46.21\00:04:49.22 "you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. " 00:04:49.25\00:04:52.32 Right here in verse 12 it says, as many as desire 00:04:52.35\00:04:55.36 "to make a showing in the flesh. 00:04:55.39\00:04:57.59 These Judaizing Christians who are deceiving the 00:04:57.63\00:05:01.20 Galatians believers that Paul had brought in through the 00:05:01.23\00:05:05.93 gospel, their motives were not totally pure. 00:05:05.97\00:05:09.30 They make a good showing in the flesh, it gives you 00:05:09.34\00:05:11.94 a sense of reputation. 00:05:11.97\00:05:13.88 There was something about it that it wasn't for the 00:05:13.91\00:05:16.54 believers themselves, but something they were trying 00:05:16.58\00:05:19.15 to do for themselves. 00:05:19.18\00:05:20.52 That is totally contrary to the spirit of Christ 00:05:20.55\00:05:23.39 because we learn in Philippians that Jesus made Himself 00:05:23.42\00:05:26.65 of no reputation, when He came to this earth Jesus 00:05:26.69\00:05:30.23 didn't come to be born into a palaces. 00:05:30.26\00:05:32.59 He was willing at every stage to be considered 00:05:32.63\00:05:37.10 something different than He was, falsely represented. 00:05:37.13\00:05:40.27 All sorts of things, and that was because reputation 00:05:40.30\00:05:43.41 was not what was most important to Jesus, 00:05:43.44\00:05:45.67 it was character, it was saving souls, 00:05:45.74\00:05:47.94 reaching out to people. 00:05:47.98\00:05:49.31 These Judaizers didn't really have, the apostle Paul was 00:05:49.34\00:05:54.18 telling them, look these guys do not have your best 00:05:54.22\00:05:56.79 interest in mind, they are just doing this for themselves. 00:05:56.82\00:05:59.59 You know Jim, you use at work Judaizers and just for the 00:05:59.62\00:06:03.16 benefit of our viewers, a Judaizers means that they are 00:06:03.19\00:06:06.59 trying to bring people into the Jewish faith. 00:06:06.63\00:06:09.23 Now it is true that the apostle Paul would have 00:06:09.26\00:06:11.80 considered himself a faithful Jew because he had really 00:06:11.83\00:06:15.04 adhere to the Jews but the Jewish religion of his day 00:06:15.07\00:06:18.21 the religion itself was a substitute for following Christ. 00:06:18.24\00:06:24.71 What was interesting was in order to avoid the persecution 00:06:24.75\00:06:29.58 what they were really trying to do was retain their old 00:06:29.62\00:06:33.72 unspiritual life and then they were trying to bring others 00:06:33.76\00:06:37.79 into that old unspiritual life. 00:06:37.83\00:06:39.86 So they wouldn't suffer persecution. 00:06:39.89\00:06:41.90 They had formed their own religion and it is interesting 00:06:41.93\00:06:47.74 how sometimes people will get on some hobbyhorse, their 00:06:47.77\00:06:53.21 own pet idea and they like the feeling they get when they 00:06:53.24\00:06:58.65 can get other people on that pet idea. 00:06:58.68\00:07:01.38 It makes them this guru over the masses, we are all in 00:07:01.42\00:07:05.65 this club and it gives them a clubhouse mentality. 00:07:05.69\00:07:09.06 It seems that that was what was going on here. 00:07:09.09\00:07:12.43 - You're right, you're exactly right. 00:07:12.46\00:07:14.10 There is another passage in Galatians where the 00:07:14.10\00:07:15.53 apostle Paul's specifically talks about the motivation 00:07:15.56\00:07:20.14 behind these false teachers. 00:07:20.20\00:07:21.84 In Galatians 4:17 he says, "they zealously court you, 00:07:21.90\00:07:26.27 "but for no good; yes, they want to exclude you, that you 00:07:26.31\00:07:30.68 "maybe zealous for them. " 00:07:30.71\00:07:32.55 So what they were doing was trying to find followers. 00:07:32.58\00:07:35.45 You know a lot of times the reason people try to find 00:07:35.48\00:07:38.65 someone to follow them is because if they are not in a 00:07:38.69\00:07:41.59 right position and they want to justify themselves, 00:07:41.62\00:07:44.49 if they can get a whole bunch of other people to agree 00:07:44.56\00:07:47.13 with them that it helps to validate where they are. 00:07:47.13\00:07:49.63 It also gives them a greater sense of power and influence 00:07:49.66\00:07:52.87 and there is all sorts of false motivations that can come 00:07:52.90\00:07:55.94 when we are trying to gain followers after ourselves. 00:07:55.97\00:07:58.81 Well let me interject this, I want you to hold the thought 00:07:58.84\00:08:01.71 but this may be confusing to the readers. 00:08:01.78\00:08:04.35 It says they would zealously exclude you, so what you 00:08:04.38\00:08:08.22 have been talking about is including them. 00:08:08.28\00:08:10.59 The point he is making is that they were trying to bring 00:08:10.62\00:08:14.76 them in but the idea of excluding, some translations 00:08:14.79\00:08:18.83 will say including because it is like, well they don't 00:08:18.86\00:08:22.20 seem to be trying to exclude but the point that is being 00:08:22.23\00:08:25.57 made here is again back to the clubhouse mentality. 00:08:25.60\00:08:29.60 It is like you have to do this and this to be part of 00:08:29.64\00:08:34.68 this club, and so what they do is they exclude people 00:08:34.74\00:08:38.25 who, if you're not going to be circumcised you can't 00:08:38.31\00:08:41.78 be part of our club. 00:08:41.82\00:08:43.15 By excluding certain people it vaunts them up, but then 00:08:43.18\00:08:48.72 they exclude, his wording is they zealously court you 00:08:48.76\00:08:54.50 and then they want to exclude you that 00:08:54.56\00:08:56.60 you maybe zealous for them. 00:08:56.63\00:08:58.20 It's a strange phenomenon that is part of human nature, 00:08:58.27\00:09:02.54 when we are excluded from something, the carnal nature 00:09:02.57\00:09:06.74 seems to want to do it all more. 00:09:06.81\00:09:08.78 If I can't have it, what I can't have it? 00:09:08.81\00:09:10.38 I want to be a part of that, I want to be part of this 00:09:10.41\00:09:13.18 elite group and that is what he is commenting on here 00:09:13.21\00:09:16.65 about excluding them, but false teachers are excluding 00:09:16.72\00:09:20.49 ultimately because they want these Galatians to be 00:09:20.52\00:09:24.29 desired to be enamored with their ways 00:09:24.36\00:09:28.23 of thinking and their religion. 00:09:28.26\00:09:30.27 The other thing that strikes me here is that they 00:09:30.30\00:09:34.04 zealously court you, so you have this picture of 00:09:34.07\00:09:37.74 courtship where even though they are excluding, they 00:09:37.77\00:09:41.71 also when you have false teachers involved, there is 00:09:41.74\00:09:45.65 usually some flattering going on. 00:09:45.68\00:09:47.38 You know when you're courting somebody there is a sense 00:09:47.42\00:09:50.89 in which you are wanting them, I can see you having 00:09:50.92\00:09:54.39 some great potential with us. 00:09:54.42\00:09:55.92 So they court and give them a sense that they could 00:09:55.96\00:09:58.59 really be special if they were circumcised. 00:09:58.63\00:10:00.73 They are trying to allure them into this, but it is not 00:10:00.80\00:10:04.47 for the benefit of these believers, 00:10:04.50\00:10:06.94 it is for their own benefit. 00:10:06.97\00:10:08.47 Now one thing the apostle Paul says that is kind of 00:10:08.50\00:10:11.31 interesting here though is right after verse 17 it says, 00:10:11.34\00:10:15.11 "but it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, 00:10:15.14\00:10:18.85 "and not only when I'm present with you. " 00:10:18.88\00:10:20.32 He said it's good to be zealous, so even though 00:10:20.35\00:10:22.92 they were zealous in a wrong way, the apostle Paul wants 00:10:22.95\00:10:25.72 to make the point that it is a good thing to be zealous. 00:10:25.75\00:10:28.29 One of the biggest problems that we have in the Christian 00:10:28.32\00:10:30.86 Church is complacency, laziness. 00:10:30.89\00:10:33.86 We seem to forget the devil is one of the hardest 00:10:33.90\00:10:37.13 workers out there, and he is zealously doing his work. 00:10:37.17\00:10:40.34 He has got his representatives who are zealously doing 00:10:40.37\00:10:43.54 their work and he doesn't sit back. 00:10:43.57\00:10:45.71 - incidentally Paul was one of those representatives. 00:10:45.77\00:10:47.21 - that's right, he was. 00:10:47.24\00:10:48.61 So when we sit back and just ignore that and say oh well, 00:10:48.68\00:10:52.75 the Lord will take care of it all. 00:10:52.78\00:10:54.72 If we ignore the obvious problems that are existing, 00:10:54.75\00:11:00.22 ignore our own need to be spreading the gospel as we 00:11:00.26\00:11:04.29 talked about last time, restoring those who are in need 00:11:04.33\00:11:07.86 of help in winning those who are in need of being won, then the 00:11:07.86\00:11:11.40 Devil is going to, because of his zealousness, he is 00:11:11.47\00:11:14.54 going to gain battles, he will not win the ultimate war 00:11:14.57\00:11:17.14 but he is going to gain battles that we could have won 00:11:17.17\00:11:19.71 if we hadn't been sleeping on the job. 00:11:19.74\00:11:21.24 That is exactly right, so the apostle Paul is 00:11:21.28\00:11:23.88 I was mentioning head that zeal, Jesus Himself 00:11:23.91\00:11:26.41 The Bible said in the story of the cleansing of the 00:11:26.45\00:11:29.85 temple and John chapter 2, that it applies the text 00:11:29.88\00:11:32.99 from the Old Testament Word says David had written 00:11:33.02\00:11:36.09 zeal, for thy house is eating me up. 00:11:36.12\00:11:38.16 In other words Jesus was zealous for the cause of God. 00:11:38.19\00:11:41.13 The problem is that these people were zealous for 00:11:41.16\00:11:44.17 the wrong thing for sure. 00:11:44.20\00:11:45.53 So we are going to go into verse 12 and continue on. 00:11:45.57\00:11:51.21 Well, you had gone into verse 12 about the circumcision. 00:11:51.24\00:11:56.11 Notice the language here, "these will compel you to be 00:11:56.18\00:12:00.32 "circumcised, only that they may not suffer persecution 00:12:00.35\00:12:04.42 "for the cross of Christ. " 00:12:04.45\00:12:05.89 So this is interesting, they are wanting to compel this 00:12:05.95\00:12:10.23 circumcision for the purpose of not suffering persecution 00:12:10.26\00:12:15.06 and this is fascinating to me just looking at this from 00:12:15.10\00:12:19.87 the perspective of Christianity today. 00:12:19.90\00:12:21.94 The tendency today of many Christians is to not want to 00:12:21.97\00:12:29.01 be that different from the world around us. 00:12:29.04\00:12:31.15 And we come up with reasons, we say well we wouldn't 00:12:31.18\00:12:35.05 reach as many people if we were so different. 00:12:35.08\00:12:37.72 But I'm afraid that the real reason is we really 00:12:37.75\00:12:40.32 don't want to suffer that persecution. 00:12:40.36\00:12:42.89 You know the Bible tells us in 2 Timothy 3:12 if you 00:12:42.92\00:12:47.36 want to turn there, 2 Timothy 3:12 00:12:47.40\00:12:51.40 The apostle Paul tells this young apprentice, "yes, 00:12:51.43\00:12:56.94 "and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus 00:12:56.97\00:13:02.51 "will suffer persecution. " 00:13:02.54\00:13:05.31 You suffer persecution when you live godly. 00:13:05.35\00:13:07.68 One of the challenges with these Judaizing teachers 00:13:07.72\00:13:10.89 was they really didn't want to live godly. 00:13:10.92\00:13:13.12 They wanted a religion where they had a few outward 00:13:13.15\00:13:16.79 things they could subscribe to that would help them 00:13:16.83\00:13:20.43 to be able to avoid totally living godly. 00:13:20.46\00:13:24.37 I'm looking at our clock and saying I want to really 00:13:24.40\00:13:29.94 dig into this, but we need to take a break. 00:13:29.97\00:13:32.21 So we are great go ahead and do that and when we 00:13:32.24\00:13:34.74 come back we are really going to dig into this idea 00:13:34.78\00:13:38.28 of avoiding this persecution for the cross of Christ. 00:13:38.35\00:13:41.78 How we as Christians need to be faithful to Christ 00:13:41.82\00:13:45.25 no matter what, stay tuned! 00:13:45.29\00:13:48.39
