Welcome back, before the break we were talking about 00:00:05.63\00:00:09.17 Galatians 6 and the apostle Paul's ammunition to bear 00:00:09.20\00:00:12.71 one another's burdens. 00:00:12.74\00:00:14.44 He talks about hearing one another's burdens and 00:00:14.51\00:00:16.61 fulfilling the law of Christ. 00:00:16.64\00:00:18.31 What we have been discussing Mark, is that we can't fulfill 00:00:18.35\00:00:22.55 the law of Christ and be indifferent to the needs of our 00:00:22.58\00:00:26.72 fellow brothers at the same time. 00:00:26.76\00:00:28.69 If we are going to be like Christ we can't have that 00:00:28.72\00:00:31.36 indifference, we have to a have compassion 00:00:31.39\00:00:33.86 for those who are in need. 00:00:33.90\00:00:35.20 - That's right person is converted, Paul says Christ 00:00:35.23\00:00:37.20 lives in me and we know how Christ lives. 00:00:37.23\00:00:40.17 Christ does not live with that indifference towards 00:00:40.20\00:00:42.74 people, so if we had that indifference that should tell 00:00:42.77\00:00:45.27 us we need a deeper experience. 00:00:45.31\00:00:47.08 Well Jim we are going to jump into chapter 6:3 and 00:00:47.11\00:00:51.55 it says here in Galatians 6:3, "for if anyone thinks 00:00:51.58\00:00:55.98 "himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives 00:00:56.02\00:01:00.39 "himself. But let each one examine his own work, and then 00:01:00.42\00:01:04.69 "he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in 00:01:04.73\00:01:07.60 "another. 5. For each one shall bear his own load. " 00:01:07.66\00:01:10.53 Now it is interesting, he is going to make this point 00:01:10.57\00:01:13.54 again more fully by talking about repeat and sowing. 00:01:13.57\00:01:16.54 In essence he is saying, we need to be careful, it's a 00:01:16.57\00:01:19.44 what do I want to say, it's a characteristic of the fallen 00:01:19.47\00:01:24.15 human condition to compare ourselves with one another. 00:01:24.18\00:01:29.45 In fact 2 Corinthians 10 it has a piece of counsel we are 00:01:29.48\00:01:34.72 going to look at, 2 Corinthians 10:12. 00:01:34.79\00:01:39.53 Look at what the apostle Paul says here, "for we dare not 00:01:39.56\00:01:45.90 "class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who 00:01:45.93\00:01:49.50 "commended themselves, but they measuring themselves by 00:01:49.54\00:01:53.11 "themselves and comparing themselves among themselves 00:01:53.14\00:01:57.21 "are not wise. " Notice they commend themselves, why? 00:01:57.25\00:02:00.68 When you compare yourself you can always find somebody 00:02:00.72\00:02:04.09 that you appear to be better than. 00:02:04.12\00:02:06.39 The fact of the matter is our standard is Christ. 00:02:06.42\00:02:09.02 If we always look to Christ it produces a total different 00:02:09.09\00:02:13.76 realization of who we are. 00:02:13.80\00:02:16.53 That is exactly right and comparing ourselves to Christ is 00:02:16.56\00:02:18.70 exactly where I believe he is going. 00:02:18.73\00:02:20.67 In verse 4 because he says, "let each one," I am back in 00:02:20.70\00:02:25.51 Galatians 6:4, "but let each one examine his own work. " 00:02:25.54\00:02:29.81 You know in 2 Corinthians 13:5 he also talks about how 00:02:29.84\00:02:33.58 we should examine ourselves whether we be in the faith. 00:02:33.62\00:02:36.72 Well certainly we don't want to spend all of our time 00:02:36.75\00:02:39.82 looking at ourselves, looking at our own faults. 00:02:39.85\00:02:42.66 If we spend all of our time doing that we will become 00:02:42.69\00:02:45.66 discouraged and we will forget that Christ is there to 00:02:45.69\00:02:48.60 help us in our time of need. 00:02:48.63\00:02:50.00 However, to ignore ourselves and what is going on in 00:02:50.03\00:02:54.54 terms of our own life and how it compares to the life 00:02:54.57\00:02:59.04 of Christ, it's definitely not what the apostle 00:02:59.07\00:03:01.68 Paul would have us to do. 00:03:01.71\00:03:03.11 The idea here is to focus on Christ. 00:03:03.14\00:03:05.81 As we come close to Christ, His goodness, pierces our soul 00:03:05.85\00:03:10.85 and we are able then to evaluate our life in light of the 00:03:10.89\00:03:15.86 example of Christ. 00:03:15.92\00:03:17.83 One of my favorite statements is from a book called 00:03:17.86\00:03:21.56 'Steps To Christ' where it says that the closer we come 00:03:21.60\00:03:25.63 to Christ, the more unworthy we appear in our own eyes. 00:03:25.67\00:03:29.67 So if we come close to Christ, then we will be able to see 00:03:29.70\00:03:33.51 our own need and we won't think ourselves to be something. 00:03:33.54\00:03:37.31 We won't be lifting ourselves up above others, we are 00:03:37.35\00:03:40.28 going to be able to see ourselves the way we truly are. 00:03:40.35\00:03:42.85 What truly is interesting about that statement, and I am 00:03:42.88\00:03:44.92 familiar with the one you are bringing up in the book 00:03:44.95\00:03:48.32 'Steps To Christ' it goes on to say that the closer we 00:03:48.36\00:03:51.09 come to Christ the more faulty we appear in our own eyes 00:03:51.13\00:03:55.96 and this is evidence of the vivifying power, life-giving 00:03:56.00\00:04:00.87 power of the Holy Spirit has come upon us. 00:04:00.90\00:04:02.80 We couldn't see our true condition if it weren't for the 00:04:02.84\00:04:07.31 Holy Spirit, so one minister that I know made this point. 00:04:07.34\00:04:11.81 When we begin to see our sinful- ness we should take courage 00:04:11.85\00:04:15.75 that we have enough of the Holy Spirit to be able to see 00:04:15.78\00:04:19.19 that amount of sinfulness and that must be evidence to us 00:04:19.22\00:04:22.26 that the Spirit is willing and ready to do a work in our 00:04:22.29\00:04:25.29 hearts that we can't do for ourselves. 00:04:25.33\00:04:27.03 That's right, when we begin to sense the Holy Spirit 00:04:27.03\00:04:29.76 pointing out those areas of need, that is nothing less 00:04:29.80\00:04:32.57 then the voice of Jesus Christ Himself speaking to our 00:04:32.60\00:04:35.30 souls, that is a powerful thought. 00:04:35.34\00:04:37.47 The reality is that when I feel comfortable and feel 00:04:37.51\00:04:42.38 good about how things are going in my life, 00:04:42.41\00:04:43.81 sometimes that is the most dangerous position to be in. 00:04:43.85\00:04:47.32 It is one I feel uncomfortable, when I know that I am not 00:04:47.35\00:04:51.12 exactly where I need to be that the Lord Jesus is far more 00:04:51.15\00:04:54.89 beautiful and gracious, and far more principled than 00:04:54.92\00:04:57.83 compassionate, all the things that He is when I am 00:04:57.86\00:05:00.80 looking at Him, I am drawn out after Him. 00:05:00.83\00:05:03.13 I'm at a certain level of uncomfortableness and 00:05:03.16\00:05:06.47 yet I know the voice of Jesus is the One in my heart 00:05:06.50\00:05:09.64 making me sense that. 00:05:09.67\00:05:11.37 So it gives me communion with Him. 00:05:11.41\00:05:12.74 That's right, a Christian life is a life of growth. 00:05:12.77\00:05:16.95 A parent would be very alarmed if they had a child that 00:05:16.98\00:05:21.15 was born and at one year of age stopped growing. 00:05:21.18\00:05:24.49 Here six months later and he is a year and a half and he 00:05:24.52\00:05:26.96 hasn't grown from a time he was a year old and then he is 00:05:26.99\00:05:29.19 two years old and hasn't grown at all the parent would 00:05:29.22\00:05:31.19 have been to every doctor in town and everything else. 00:05:31.23\00:05:34.10 Too often as Christians we are satisfied when we are in 00:05:34.10\00:05:36.87 the same place we have been for 5, 10, 20 years. 00:05:36.93\00:05:40.07 - right! - so the Lord is wanting us to do is see our 00:05:40.10\00:05:44.27 weaknesses and examine our own work, not that we would go 00:05:44.31\00:05:47.94 around discouraged but to prompt us to continue to reach 00:05:47.98\00:05:51.55 out after Him so we can continue to 00:05:51.58\00:05:53.68 grow into Christ likeness. 00:05:53.72\00:05:55.22 And we will be unable to relate to others in the right way 00:05:55.25\00:05:58.15 because rather than holding ourselves above them we will 00:05:58.22\00:06:01.16 be empathize with them because we truly are 00:06:01.19\00:06:03.12 no better then than they. 00:06:03.16\00:06:04.49 Right, you know the other thing is that this is not just 00:06:04.53\00:06:08.26 good advice, this is essential for us. 00:06:08.30\00:06:10.57 This is what Paul makes a point of in verse 5 when he 00:06:10.60\00:06:12.40 says, "for each one shall bear his own load. " 00:06:12.43\00:06:14.47 In essence what he is saying is, there is an 00:06:14.50\00:06:16.47 accountability factor here and ultimately as we bear 00:06:16.50\00:06:19.71 one another's burdens we seek to help others. 00:06:19.74\00:06:21.71 We can't make, you can't give a Christian experience 00:06:21.74\00:06:25.75 to somebody else as much as you can seek to bear their 00:06:25.78\00:06:29.75 burdens, but we have to answer for own choices. 00:06:29.78\00:06:32.55 We have to answer our own decisions and our own 00:06:32.59\00:06:35.32 experience, or lack there of. 00:06:35.36\00:06:37.16 So he says each one in essence, is going to bear his own load. 00:06:37.23\00:06:40.96 As he says that, he leads into a very challenging few 00:06:40.96\00:06:44.70 verses where he tries to describe for them the 00:06:44.77\00:06:47.14 difficulties they are going to have if they accept this gospel 00:06:47.17\00:06:50.81 of circumcision, or the works of the law that is being 00:06:50.87\00:06:53.61 presented to them by these Judaizers Christians. 00:06:53.64\00:06:56.38 If you look in verse 6, we will pick up there and just 00:06:56.41\00:06:59.65 read a few more verses. 00:06:59.68\00:07:01.18 It says, "let him who is taught the word share in all 00:07:01.22\00:07:04.55 "good things with him who teaches. " 00:07:04.59\00:07:06.45 The idea here is the apostle Paul, he himself is helping 00:07:06.49\00:07:10.19 to bear the burdens of these Galatians, seeking to reach 00:07:10.26\00:07:13.60 those who have fallen themselves which is this church. 00:07:13.63\00:07:17.07 Many of these Gentile believers have begun to go the way 00:07:17.13\00:07:20.60 of these Judaizers teachers. 00:07:20.64\00:07:22.27 He is saying that I am trying to bear your burdens and 00:07:22.30\00:07:25.11 share in the same and have a burden for others. 00:07:25.14\00:07:27.41 We need to be bearing each other's burdens. 00:07:27.44\00:07:30.25 Then he says in verse 7, "Do not be deceived," 00:07:30.28\00:07:32.98 that's important! "God is not mocked; for whatever a man 00:07:33.01\00:07:36.62 "sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his 00:07:36.65\00:07:39.95 "flash will also flesh reap corruption, but he who sows 00:07:39.99\00:07:43.56 "to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. " 00:07:43.59\00:07:47.13 The idea here is that the apostle Paul is saying, 00:07:47.13\00:07:49.76 you know this gospel of circumcision, works of the law, 00:07:49.83\00:07:54.47 it leaves you in the flesh. 00:07:54.50\00:07:56.81 When you don't believe in justification by faith in 00:07:56.84\00:07:59.81 Christ, you don't see the need for that union with Christ 00:07:59.84\00:08:02.88 you don't receive the Spirit and all that is left is the flesh. 00:08:02.91\00:08:06.05 If you sow to your flesh you will reap corruption. 00:08:06.08\00:08:09.38 This is a very clear warning that he is giving. 00:08:09.42\00:08:12.65 You know I want to add to that something that is very 00:08:12.69\00:08:15.42 important here, he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh 00:08:15.46\00:08:19.36 reap corruption, this is not an arbitrary decree 00:08:19.39\00:08:22.00 from a God who is angry because you chose something 00:08:22.03\00:08:24.63 different than what He asked you to do. 00:08:24.70\00:08:26.17 God is trying to communicate to us that the flesh brings 00:08:26.20\00:08:29.04 corruption, sin has its own penalty built-into it. 00:08:29.07\00:08:32.41 God is not trying to keep us from the fun things in life. 00:08:32.44\00:08:35.14 God is trying to shield us from things that would destroy 00:08:35.18\00:08:37.61 us. - that's right you are going to reap what you sow. 00:08:37.65\00:08:40.48 That's why he says don't be deceived, these people are 00:08:40.52\00:08:43.32 trying to deceive him. 00:08:43.35\00:08:44.69 There is a couple other passages within Scripture that use 00:08:44.72\00:08:46.92 those words, do not be deceived. 00:08:46.96\00:08:49.12 One of them is when John writes in 1 John 3:8, not to be 00:08:49.16\00:08:52.79 deceived, he who practices righteousness, 00:08:52.83\00:08:55.43 he says, it is righteous. 00:08:55.46\00:08:57.43 No one can claim righteousness by circumcision and yet 00:08:57.47\00:09:00.20 be practicing the works of the flesh. 00:09:00.24\00:09:02.00 He says if they do, they are not righteous. 00:09:02.04\00:09:04.71 He who practices righteousness is righteous. 00:09:04.77\00:09:07.41 Don't be deceived by that. 00:09:07.48\00:09:09.34 And in another place James says, don't be just hearers 00:09:09.38\00:09:12.88 of the law, but doers, or hearers of the words but doers. 00:09:12.91\00:09:16.75 Then he says if you are just hearers of law you would be 00:09:16.79\00:09:20.49 deceiving yourself, so the ideas don't be deceived by the 00:09:20.52\00:09:24.53 idea that you can just hear the law, claim righteousness 00:09:24.56\00:09:28.26 through circumcision or anything else, and yet be living 00:09:28.30\00:09:32.03 a life that is not a righteous life. 00:09:32.07\00:09:34.10 If you sow to the flesh you are going to reap corruption. 00:09:34.14\00:09:37.74 You are going to reap what you sow, 00:09:37.77\00:09:39.77 it very clearly says that. 00:09:39.81\00:09:41.14 But right after this he says, if you sow to the Spirit, 00:09:41.18\00:09:44.78 you're going to reap everlasting life. 00:09:44.81\00:09:47.28 Then he encourages them in verse 9, "and let's not grow 00:09:47.32\00:09:51.09 "weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap 00:09:51.12\00:09:54.86 "if we do not lose heart. " 00:09:54.89\00:09:56.29 Here he is helping these Galatians to understand what 00:09:56.32\00:09:59.46 they have done is that they got weary in doing good. 00:09:59.49\00:10:03.70 Back in Chapter 5:7 he said, "you ran well, who hindered 00:10:03.73\00:10:07.94 "you from obeying the truth?" 00:10:07.97\00:10:09.44 That is exactly what he is saying here, let's not grow 00:10:09.47\00:10:12.14 weary in doing good, we are on the right track. 00:10:12.17\00:10:15.11 Don't grow weary and go the easy route with these 00:10:15.18\00:10:18.05 false deceptions and the idea is don't, if you stay with 00:10:18.08\00:10:23.62 the Lord Jesus you will reap everlasting life. 00:10:23.65\00:10:26.62 There is a verse that I would like to look at on this 00:10:26.65\00:10:29.29 point in Hebrews 10 that is really powerfully illustrating 00:10:29.32\00:10:32.99 this, it's in verse 23. 00:10:33.03\00:10:34.73 He says, Hebrews 10:23, "let us hold fast the confession 00:10:34.76\00:10:40.34 "of our hope without wavering for He who promised is 00:10:40.37\00:10:44.34 "faithful. " That is the same thing he is saying in 00:10:44.41\00:10:48.14 Galatians, we will reap if we don't lose heart. 00:10:48.18\00:10:51.88 He who promised is faithful, if we keep with the Lord Jesus 00:10:51.91\00:10:56.42 and if we don't give up because of the flesh's 00:10:56.45\00:11:00.39 temptations we can be sure that we are going to be 00:11:00.42\00:11:04.23 reaping everlasting life. 00:11:04.29\00:11:05.86 You know Jim, it is interesting because the next verse 00:11:05.89\00:11:08.16 there in Hebrews says, "let us consider one another 00:11:08.20\00:11:10.47 "in order to stir up love and good works. " 00:11:10.50\00:11:12.80 The idea again is bearing one another's burdens and that 00:11:12.83\00:11:16.57 takes us to the verse 10 in Galatians 6:10 where he says, 00:11:16.60\00:11:20.84 "therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to 00:11:20.88\00:11:25.08 "all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. " 00:11:25.11\00:11:29.98 One thing that there is heavy on my heart is how 00:11:30.02\00:11:33.59 Christians can be the meanest to Christians. 00:11:33.62\00:11:37.09 We like to pick on each other, I hear all the time 00:11:37.13\00:11:40.86 Christians getting on all the bad Christians verses 00:11:40.90\00:11:44.53 giving them the benefit of the doubt. 00:11:44.57\00:11:47.17 In seeking to guard one another's reputations, 00:11:47.24\00:11:49.97 you can see a person on the street and witness to them. 00:11:50.01\00:11:53.61 We are going to share with them, we are going to talk 00:11:53.64\00:11:57.18 to them about Jesus. 00:11:57.21\00:11:58.55 We see somebody in church and we hold a grudge with them 00:11:58.58\00:12:00.98 for 30 years, where does this come from? 00:12:01.02\00:12:03.69 Certainly not from the Spirit, it comes from a flesh. 00:12:03.72\00:12:07.09 The apostle urges us here to do good to all especially 00:12:07.12\00:12:10.46 those of the household of faith. 00:12:10.49\00:12:11.83 Even Jesus said, that in our worship if you come to the 00:12:11.86\00:12:14.46 altar and there remember you have, someone has something 00:12:14.50\00:12:17.20 against you go and make that right. 00:12:17.23\00:12:20.74 Have a burden for reconciliation with one another. 00:12:20.80\00:12:23.77 Jesus said people will know you are My disciples by the 00:12:23.81\00:12:27.88 love you have for one another. 00:12:27.91\00:12:29.44 So let us seek to bear one another's burdens, to restore 00:12:29.48\00:12:32.68 others in the spirit of gentleness, to love others as 00:12:32.75\00:12:35.92 Christ loved us. 00:12:35.95\00:12:38.09
