Welcome back to another episode of Books of the Book. 00:00:23.02\00:00:24.99 I'm Pastor Mark Howard and director of the Emmanuel 00:00:25.02\00:00:27.26 Institute of evangelism in the Michigan conferences 00:00:27.32\00:00:29.02 Seventh-day Adventist as well as the Pastor of the 00:00:29.06\00:00:30.73 Gobels Seventh-day Adventist church in Gobels Michigan. 00:00:30.76\00:00:32.76 I'm here at my co-host, my younger brother Jim. 00:00:32.83\00:00:35.56 Yes, my name is Jim Howard and I too am a Pastor 00:00:35.60\00:00:38.33 in the Michigan conference. 00:00:38.37\00:00:39.70 I pastor the Detroit Metropolitan and South Lyons 00:00:39.73\00:00:42.34 Seventh-day Adventist churches. 00:00:42.40\00:00:43.77 We have been going through the book of Galatians and you know 00:00:43.84\00:00:47.48 Jim it has been a pleasure, working with my kid brother 00:00:47.51\00:00:50.08 on the Galatians book as we been going through and studying. 00:00:50.15\00:00:54.72 We had some really great discussions on so many powerful 00:00:54.75\00:00:59.32 truths in the book of Galatians. 00:00:59.39\00:01:01.32 - yes we have. 00:01:01.36\00:01:02.69 Today is going to be no different, we're studying in the 00:01:02.72\00:01:04.06 book of Galatians and will be in Chapter 5. 00:01:04.09\00:01:05.99 If you're watching at home you will need to have a Bible 00:01:06.03\00:01:08.56 nearby I would encourage you to pick it up and follow 00:01:08.60\00:01:11.17 along with us. 00:01:11.20\00:01:12.53 We are going to Galatians 5 and you will find it in the 00:01:12.57\00:01:14.70 New Testament starting with Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, 00:01:14.74\00:01:17.94 Acts, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians and then Galatians. 00:01:18.01\00:01:21.18 We're going to Galatians 5:13. 00:01:21.21\00:01:26.11 This is something we haven't commented a lot on. 00:01:26.15\00:01:29.35 We are going to pick up on here were the apostle Paul 00:01:29.38\00:01:33.52 writes in Galatians 5:13, "for you, brother, have been 00:01:33.56\00:01:37.66 "called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an 00:01:37.69\00:01:41.96 "opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one 00:01:42.00\00:01:45.70 "another. 14. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, 00:01:45.73\00:01:49.47 "even in this: 'you shall love your neighbor as yourself'. 00:01:49.50\00:01:53.27 "But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you 00:01:53.31\00:01:57.05 "be consumed by one another!" 00:01:57.08\00:01:59.05 Now the point that Paul is trying to make is this. 00:01:59.08\00:02:04.25 The Judaizing teachers have come in and pushed a false 00:02:04.29\00:02:08.76 gospel upon the Galatians, the gospel of circumcision. 00:02:08.79\00:02:13.60 And so as we have discussed this Jim, the Galatians 00:02:13.63\00:02:18.13 have accepted this false gospel and Paul is trying to 00:02:18.17\00:02:21.40 point out is that there is a disconnect with their 00:02:21.44\00:02:24.64 behavior and their faith. 00:02:24.67\00:02:26.91 There is always going to be a corresponding action 00:02:26.94\00:02:32.25 to your belief system. 00:02:32.28\00:02:34.32 There is going to be a corresponding lifestyle and Paul 00:02:34.35\00:02:37.25 is trying to help them to see that their lifestyle is 00:02:37.29\00:02:40.46 not Christian and that should clue them in to the fact 00:02:40.49\00:02:43.63 that something is wrong in this situation. 00:02:43.66\00:02:46.49 Now one of the things he brings up here Jim, in this 00:02:46.53\00:02:49.13 passage is, we need to touch on this, this idea that 00:02:49.16\00:02:52.20 so many people miss the point when Paul is saying, 00:02:52.23\00:02:55.24 all the law is fulfilling one word, even this 00:02:55.27\00:02:57.77 you should love your neighbor as yourself. 00:02:57.81\00:03:01.94 They take that as Paul saying that really the 00:03:01.98\00:03:05.15 Ten Commandments don't exist anymore as long as 00:03:05.21\00:03:08.35 we love each other. 00:03:08.38\00:03:09.72 I think you were going to comment on that. 00:03:09.75\00:03:12.55 Yes, there is a verse in Romans 13 that is a parallel 00:03:12.59\00:03:15.42 verse to this and I wonder if we could turn there 00:03:15.46\00:03:18.26 together, Romans 13:8. 00:03:18.29\00:03:23.13 The apostle Paul here writing also and is expounding 00:03:23.16\00:03:27.40 in a different way to the Romans. 00:03:27.44\00:03:29.40 He says, "owe no one anything except to love one another, 00:03:29.44\00:03:33.61 "for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the 00:03:33.64\00:03:37.21 "Commandments, you shall not commit adultery, you shall 00:03:37.25\00:03:40.38 "not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false 00:03:40.42\00:03:43.28 "witness, you shall not covet, and if there is any other 00:03:43.32\00:03:46.52 "Commandment, are all summed up in this saying namely, 00:03:46.59\00:03:49.76 "you shall love your neighbor as yourself. 00:03:49.79\00:03:52.46 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the 00:03:52.53\00:03:56.56 "fulfillment of the law. " 00:03:56.60\00:03:58.57 So here he uses a word here that I think is very important. 00:03:58.60\00:04:02.74 He says, they are all summed up in this saying, you shall 00:04:02.77\00:04:06.81 love your neighbor as yourself. 00:04:06.84\00:04:08.18 Basically what he is saying is look, if you love your 00:04:08.21\00:04:11.18 neighbor, you are not going to sin against them. 00:04:11.21\00:04:14.08 You're not going to get into an adulterous relationship. 00:04:14.12\00:04:16.92 You are not going to lie to them, you're not going to 00:04:16.99\00:04:19.95 harm them and so the idea of loving your neighbor 00:04:19.99\00:04:23.66 you would naturally be keeping those commandments if 00:04:23.73\00:04:27.30 you were loving your neighbor. 00:04:27.40\00:04:28.70 The idea here is not that love replaces the law, but that 00:04:28.73\00:04:32.27 the love sums up the law. 00:04:32.30\00:04:34.17 There is a very clear distinction. 00:04:34.20\00:04:36.17 The other thing that is worth noting here is that he says, 00:04:36.20\00:04:39.51 you shall love your neighbor as yourself and that is 00:04:39.54\00:04:42.78 actually found in the Old Testament in Leviticus 19. 00:04:42.81\00:04:46.61 So to say that you shall love your neighbor as yourself 00:04:46.65\00:04:50.49 replaces the Ten Commandments would be kind of silly. 00:04:50.52\00:04:54.56 Back in the Old Testament they had this same command, 00:04:54.59\00:04:58.19 love your neighbor as yourself in Leviticus 19:18 and 00:04:58.26\00:05:01.63 yet that did not do away with the Ten Commandments back 00:05:01.66\00:05:04.97 then so why would it do away with it now? 00:05:05.03\00:05:07.00 So the apostle Paul is simply making the point in 00:05:07.04\00:05:09.20 Galatians that love will sum up the law and those who love 00:05:09.24\00:05:13.34 will fulfill the law. 00:05:13.38\00:05:15.18 That's right, we have already seen that Paul is positive about 00:05:15.21\00:05:18.11 the Ten Commandments, it's just the misuse 00:05:18.15\00:05:20.32 of the Ten Commandments that he is concerned with. 00:05:20.38\00:05:22.58 The same thing in the teachings of Jesus which made me 00:05:22.65\00:05:24.85 think of that when you said that. 00:05:24.89\00:05:26.49 Matthew 22:35 the Bible says, then one of them, a lawyer" 00:05:26.52\00:05:31.93 one who specialized in this case religious law. 00:05:31.96\00:05:35.76 "He asked him a question testing him and saying Teacher, 00:05:35.80\00:05:39.40 "which is the great Commandment in the law? Jesus said to 00:05:39.43\00:05:42.97 "him, you shall love the Lord your God with all your 00:05:43.00\00:05:46.21 "heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 00:05:46.24\00:05:49.41 "This is the first and great Commandment. " 00:05:49.44\00:05:51.55 Now if we wanted to be a realistic with what Paul just 00:05:51.58\00:05:54.55 said, we could say that Paul really took away even one 00:05:54.62\00:05:57.55 of these commandments of Jesus. 00:05:57.59\00:05:58.92 He didn't bring that one up, he only brought the next one 00:05:58.95\00:06:01.72 where Jesus says, "and the second is like it: you shall 00:06:01.76\00:06:04.49 "love your neighbor as yourself. " 00:06:04.53\00:06:05.86 Now the point is Paul was trying to focus on an aspect, 00:06:05.89\00:06:09.16 let's read verse 40 where Jesus says, "on these two 00:06:09.20\00:06:12.20 Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. " 00:06:12.23\00:06:15.17 All he is trying to say is this purity like the law is 00:06:15.20\00:06:17.91 summed up in these two principles, but first one love 00:06:17.94\00:06:20.18 God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. 00:06:20.21\00:06:22.64 That sums up the first four commandments dealing 00:06:22.68\00:06:25.08 with our love to God. 00:06:25.11\00:06:26.68 Our service to God that kind of thing. 00:06:26.72\00:06:29.42 The last six commandments of the 10 are summed up in 00:06:29.45\00:06:33.76 loving your neighbor as yourself. 00:06:33.79\00:06:35.12 Of course Paul was dealing specifically in the context 00:06:35.16\00:06:37.46 in Galatians with the way they were treating one another 00:06:37.49\00:06:39.79 and so he highlights the importance of love. 00:06:39.83\00:06:44.40 It is easy for us to get caught up in certain duties. 00:06:44.43\00:06:49.07 Okay I'm not going to steal and I'm not going to lie, 00:06:49.10\00:06:52.97 but in our heart we can harbor malice or bitterness. 00:06:53.04\00:06:56.38 So that was what was happening in Galatia and Paul 00:06:56.41\00:06:59.38 highlighted that as a problem that was going on there. 00:06:59.41\00:07:02.18 Certainly he wasn't negating the importance of the 00:07:02.22\00:07:05.32 Commandments of God anymore than Jesus was right here 00:07:05.35\00:07:08.56 as He talked to this lawyer about the great Commandments. 00:07:08.59\00:07:14.03 If you look back in Galatians in Chapter 5, the apostle 00:07:14.10\00:07:17.90 Paul is beginning to talk about this principle of love, 00:07:17.93\00:07:22.24 which is really only possible through the new birth. 00:07:22.27\00:07:26.68 We can't truly love someone unless we have a union with 00:07:26.71\00:07:31.05 Christ who is love. 00:07:31.11\00:07:32.81 You know that makes me think of this Jim. 00:07:32.85\00:07:34.18 Because it is true as we were just commenting, I've heard 00:07:34.22\00:07:37.52 people say I don't think it is so important that we keep 00:07:37.55\00:07:40.46 the Ten Commandments anymore and usually if I ask why? 00:07:40.49\00:07:43.53 Because it is impossible for us to keep the commandments 00:07:43.56\00:07:46.53 and what we need to do is to just love. 00:07:46.56\00:07:48.76 That betrays the misconception of the carnal mind to 00:07:48.80\00:07:53.70 believe it would be any easier for us to love the way 00:07:53.74\00:07:58.61 God wants us to love, then it would be to 00:07:58.64\00:08:01.08 keep the Ten Commandments. 00:08:01.11\00:08:02.74 It would be easier in a sense, I was going to say would 00:08:02.78\00:08:05.18 be easier to keep the Ten Commandments but the reality 00:08:05.25\00:08:07.65 is it is one and the same. 00:08:07.68\00:08:09.12 Is that love that prompts the true keeping of the 00:08:09.15\00:08:12.59 Commandments and it's impossible for us to love our neighbor as 00:08:12.62\00:08:16.79 ourself unless we have a born-again experience. 00:08:16.86\00:08:20.66 That's right, and that is exactly where the apostle Paul 00:08:20.70\00:08:23.50 goes, and as we continue through this episode and the next 00:08:23.53\00:08:26.13 we are going to see the apostle Paul gets more and more 00:08:26.17\00:08:29.60 practical, helping them to see that this experience of 00:08:29.64\00:08:33.04 the gospel should change the way that they live. 00:08:33.07\00:08:35.98 He draws that out in verse 16 of Galatians 5. 00:08:36.01\00:08:38.88 I would like to read there and it says, "I say then: 00:08:38.91\00:08:41.62 "walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust 00:08:41.65\00:08:44.49 "of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, 00:08:44.55\00:08:47.82 "and the Spirit against flesh; and these are contrary to 00:08:47.86\00:08:50.63 "one another, so that you do not do the things that you 00:08:50.66\00:08:53.40 "wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are 00:08:53.43\00:08:56.97 "not under the law. " 00:08:57.00\00:08:58.63 Now here in these few verses he starts by saying walk 00:08:58.70\00:09:03.04 in the Spirit, so walking denotes in your life a very 00:09:03.07\00:09:07.31 practical instruction that he is giving. 00:09:07.34\00:09:09.31 The way that you live should be in the Spirit. 00:09:09.34\00:09:11.95 He draws this contrast, the Spirit is going to fight 00:09:12.01\00:09:17.19 against the flesh, and the flesh is going 00:09:17.22\00:09:19.65 to fight against the Spirit. 00:09:19.69\00:09:21.02 The idea here is that even for someone who is a converted 00:09:21.06\00:09:23.83 Christian, meaning someone who has been born again 00:09:23.86\00:09:26.90 and have had that change of heart. 00:09:26.93\00:09:28.63 The pride has been subdued, humility has come in 00:09:28.66\00:09:31.53 and they have seen Christ lifted up and they have 00:09:31.57\00:09:34.37 a love and affection for Him. 00:09:34.40\00:09:36.14 Even though that is there, the flesh is still there. 00:09:36.20\00:09:39.61 That carnal selfish heart is still there. 00:09:39.64\00:09:44.21 What it does is that it fights against the divine nature, 00:09:44.25\00:09:48.95 the Spirit of God that is inside of us. 00:09:48.98\00:09:50.89 There is this war, this battle that goes on. 00:09:50.92\00:09:53.66 So whatever happens, whatever choices we have to make in 00:09:53.69\00:09:57.23 life, it is not like we have no resistance from the 00:09:57.26\00:10:01.30 inside, that flesh is still there. 00:10:01.33\00:10:03.43 What the apostle Paul is telling us, walk in the Spirit 00:10:03.47\00:10:07.04 and keep that flesh subdued. 00:10:07.07\00:10:08.80 That's right, in fact we actually see a really clear 00:10:08.84\00:10:11.67 picture of that in Romans 7 where the apostle Paul 00:10:11.71\00:10:14.51 spells this out a little more clearly. 00:10:14.54\00:10:17.28 All he says in Galatians is that the flesh and the Spirit 00:10:17.31\00:10:20.92 are contrary so you don't do the things you want to do, 00:10:20.95\00:10:24.52 or the things you would or wish to do. 00:10:24.55\00:10:27.09 We see that played out in Romans 7:14. 00:10:27.12\00:10:29.59 I'm going to start at first 14 were here Paul says, 00:10:29.62\00:10:33.23 "for we know that the law is spiritual, but I am 00:10:33.26\00:10:36.80 "carnal, sold under sin. " So we already see to contrary 00:10:36.83\00:10:39.30 things, we see spiritual and carnal. 00:10:39.33\00:10:41.47 What happens there? He says, "15. For what I am doing, 00:10:41.50\00:10:46.41 "I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do 00:10:46.44\00:10:51.05 "not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16. If, then, 00:10:51.08\00:10:55.82 "I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it 00:10:55.85\00:11:00.06 "is good. 17. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but 00:11:00.12\00:11:03.73 "sin that dwells in me. 18. For I know that in me (that 00:11:03.76\00:11:07.50 "is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is 00:11:07.50\00:11:11.10 "present with me, but how to perform what is good I do 00:11:11.13\00:11:14.57 "not find. 19. For the good that I will to do, I do not 00:11:14.60\00:11:17.91 "do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. " 00:11:17.94\00:11:21.01 So the whole point Paul is making is he has this internal 00:11:21.08\00:11:24.11 battle, he wants to do right but he does wrong. 00:11:24.15\00:11:27.28 He wants to resist wrong, but he does it anyway. 00:11:27.32\00:11:30.39 He has this conflict and he says in the course of this, 00:11:30.42\00:11:34.49 because the law points out things that he can see are 00:11:34.52\00:11:38.53 wrong he realizes the law is good. 00:11:38.56\00:11:40.96 I agree with the law that it is good, the only problem is, 00:11:40.96\00:11:44.70 and this is interesting, he is not battling against the law 00:11:44.73\00:11:48.00 now, he is not saying I don't think we need to keep the 00:11:48.04\00:11:51.27 law, he realizes we do need to keep the law. 00:11:51.31\00:11:54.14 The only problem is my flesh isn't subject to the law. 00:11:54.18\00:11:58.01 I can't find how to keep the law and so he is stuck in 00:11:58.05\00:12:02.15 this experience where it said in Galatians that the person 00:12:02.18\00:12:06.19 who is led by the Spirit is not under the law. 00:12:06.22\00:12:07.92 We have talked about the person who is under the law, 00:12:07.96\00:12:09.92 under the dominion of sin. 00:12:09.96\00:12:11.29 Romans 6:14 says, you are not under law but under grace, 00:12:11.33\00:12:15.16 sin shall not have dominion over you because you are 00:12:15.20\00:12:19.10 not under law but under grace. 00:12:19.17\00:12:20.50 When sin has dominion over you that means you are 00:12:20.54\00:12:22.87 a slave to sin and what is the description here of 00:12:22.90\00:12:25.17 this man's struggle except that he is a slave. 00:12:25.21\00:12:27.44 He can even do his own will. 00:12:27.48\00:12:28.91 He has to everything his master says, 00:12:28.98\00:12:31.15 and his master is the flesh. 00:12:31.18\00:12:32.61 Wow if you keep reading in this passage it gets even more 00:12:32.65\00:12:37.95 practical, when you look at verse 20 he says, "now if I do 00:12:38.02\00:12:42.46 "what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but 00:12:42.49\00:12:46.76 "sin that dwells in me. 21. I find then a law, that evil 00:12:46.80\00:12:50.27 "was present with me, the one who wills a to do good. 00:12:50.30\00:12:53.47 "For I delight in the law of God according to the inward 00:12:53.50\00:12:56.44 "man. 23 but I see another law in my members, warring 00:12:56.47\00:12:59.11 "against the law of my mind, and bringing me into 00:12:59.14\00:13:01.78 "captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 00:13:01.84\00:13:04.35 "O wretched man that I am! Who would deliver me from this 00:13:04.38\00:13:08.08 "body of death? 25. I thank God-through Jesus Christ our 00:13:08.12\00:13:11.95 "Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of 00:13:11.99\00:13:15.79 "God, but with the flesh the law of sin. " 00:13:15.82\00:13:18.53 Now this is a powerful passage in one of the key points 00:13:18.56\00:13:21.70 here that I would like to draw out is that many people 00:13:21.73\00:13:24.87 read here and say that is me. 00:13:24.90\00:13:28.07 I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. 00:13:28.10\00:13:30.77 I will to do good but I'm not. 00:13:30.81\00:13:34.31 That is just like the apostle Paul so that should be just 00:13:34.34\00:13:37.98 fine, in other words my good intentions are really 00:13:38.01\00:13:41.82 all that God needs. 00:13:41.85\00:13:43.18 He knows that inside I know what is right, even though 00:13:43.22\00:13:45.55 I may not be doing right. 00:13:45.59\00:13:47.32 They take Romans 7 as a stopping place. - that's right, 00:13:47.36\00:13:50.56 that's right but we recognize that according to Jesus, 00:13:50.59\00:13:54.20 He says that not everyone says to me Lord, Lord will be in 00:13:54.23\00:13:57.87 the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My 00:13:57.90\00:14:00.40 Father in heaven. 00:14:00.44\00:14:01.77 Good intentions is not exactly what God is seeking for. 00:14:01.80\00:14:04.04 We are going to dive a little deeper into this in just a 00:14:04.07\00:14:06.68 moment, but right now we need to go to break and 00:14:06.71\00:14:08.78 we will be right back with you. 00:14:08.81\00:14:10.15
