Welcome back, you know right before our break Jim, you 00:00:06.10\00:00:09.47 were talking in Galatians 5:5 of how it talks about how 00:00:09.50\00:00:12.71 we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 00:00:12.74\00:00:15.91 - yes! - You know it's powerful about this is we had talked 00:00:15.94\00:00:19.11 just before the break about how the Bible says there is 00:00:19.18\00:00:21.82 no one good, no not one. 00:00:21.85\00:00:23.18 The tendency, especially in our culture today is to feel 00:00:23.22\00:00:26.89 demeaned when it happens. 00:00:26.92\00:00:28.79 We have a hard time saying what do you mean if no one is 00:00:28.86\00:00:31.36 righteous, if no one is good then that means that 00:00:31.39\00:00:33.19 I am not a good person. 00:00:33.23\00:00:34.56 That is exactly right, but here's the beauty of it. 00:00:34.56\00:00:37.27 That is exactly who God offers righteousness to. 00:00:37.30\00:00:40.77 The whole idea is, all have sinned, there is none 00:00:40.80\00:00:43.64 righteous so we are all on the same playing field. 00:00:43.67\00:00:46.44 God says to us if you could recognize that, if you will 00:00:46.47\00:00:49.31 realize that, I have righteousness for you. 00:00:49.38\00:00:53.18 The only righteousness that you can find comes from Me 00:00:53.25\00:00:55.88 and I have it for you. 00:00:55.92\00:00:57.45 It says here, for we eagerly wait for this righteousness. 00:00:57.52\00:01:02.32 In other words it becomes the all-consuming desire of the 00:01:02.36\00:01:06.66 person who realizes their need because it is the only way 00:01:06.70\00:01:10.93 out. - that's right and just because we don't have 00:01:11.00\00:01:14.04 righteousness does not mean we are not valuable to God. 00:01:14.07\00:01:17.94 He paid everything, all of heaven for us, so He is 00:01:17.97\00:01:21.71 helping us to see here that we are bankrupt of what we 00:01:21.74\00:01:25.28 need and He is trying to rescue us by giving us that 00:01:25.31\00:01:28.85 very thing that we need. 00:01:28.88\00:01:30.22 I think of the story - well let me interject for 00:01:30.25\00:01:33.92 a moment, I think of a kitten caught up in the tree and 00:01:33.96\00:01:36.76 you are trying to get the kitten out of the tree. 00:01:36.79\00:01:38.16 Will that poor kitten doesn't always realize you're trying 00:01:38.19\00:01:40.53 to help it, right? 00:01:40.56\00:01:41.86 In the same way this is the picture that God is giving. 00:01:41.90\00:01:44.50 He wants us to see a condition, He didn't make the condition, 00:01:44.57\00:01:48.04 the condition exists. 00:01:48.07\00:01:49.44 This is the condition that we in, we're unrighteous. 00:01:49.47\00:01:51.97 We do not have the righteousness we need to continue and 00:01:52.01\00:01:54.48 so God is trying to make that condition known to us. 00:01:54.51\00:01:56.88 We don't necessarily perceive His goodness in making that 00:01:56.91\00:02:00.58 known, just as a kitten doesn't realize we're trying to help. 00:02:00.62\00:02:04.19 God is trying to bring us into an understanding that 00:02:04.22\00:02:06.82 this is for your good. 00:02:06.86\00:02:08.26 I'm just telling you condition that has already existed 00:02:08.32\00:02:10.46 if you will accept it and receive that, and then 00:02:10.49\00:02:14.56 you can receive My righteousness. 00:02:14.56\00:02:15.90 Amen, you know He had to deal with this along the way 00:02:15.93\00:02:19.90 during His earthly life. 00:02:19.93\00:02:21.40 I remember the story in John 6 when He was telling the 00:02:21.44\00:02:26.21 people that you need Me. 00:02:26.24\00:02:27.98 Unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the 00:02:28.01\00:02:30.31 Son of Man, you have no life in you. 00:02:30.35\00:02:32.18 No righteousness, and many of them walked away because 00:02:32.21\00:02:35.62 it was too offensive to them. 00:02:35.65\00:02:37.25 But Peter, there was an interesting story that happened 00:02:37.29\00:02:40.22 with Peter because Jesus had asked His disciples, 00:02:40.29\00:02:43.89 "Will you also go away?" Peters said, to whom shall 00:02:43.93\00:02:47.50 we go? You have the words of eternal life. 00:02:47.56\00:02:50.43 Peter was essentially saying there is no other place 00:02:50.47\00:02:53.27 that we can go, there is no other place to find 00:02:53.30\00:02:55.87 righteousness, there is no other place where eternity 00:02:55.90\00:02:58.54 can be found or discovered or obtained. 00:02:58.57\00:03:01.58 So Jesus was being revealed to Peter and through Peter 00:03:01.61\00:03:06.72 as the only way. 00:03:06.75\00:03:08.78 That is right and so this is what starts to lead into 00:03:08.85\00:03:11.95 what we are dealing with here. 00:03:11.99\00:03:13.62 This offense of the cross, this offensiveness of the 00:03:13.66\00:03:17.33 cross, the root word there or Greek word is 'scandalon'. 00:03:17.36\00:03:20.96 It's where we get our English word scandal from. 00:03:21.00\00:03:23.97 You know a scandal is something that is a disgrace. 00:03:24.00\00:03:27.57 It is something shameful and this word appears other 00:03:27.60\00:03:31.07 places in Scripture instead of offense as stumbling block. 00:03:31.11\00:03:33.71 And I think you are going to go to one of those places. 00:03:33.74\00:03:38.71 One of those places is 1 Corinthians 1:20 to start with. 00:03:38.75\00:03:43.65 The apostle Paul says, "where is the wise? Where is the scribe? 00:03:48.46\00:03:53.46 "Where's the disputer of this age? Has not God made 00:03:53.50\00:03:56.33 "foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the 00:03:56.36\00:03:59.37 "wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, 00:03:59.40\00:04:02.40 "it pleased God through the foolishness of the message 00:04:02.47\00:04:05.61 "preached to save those who believe. For Jews request a 00:04:05.64\00:04:09.38 "sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ 00:04:09.41\00:04:14.18 "crucified, to the Jews a "stumbling block. " 00:04:14.22\00:04:17.89 So there's the cross, Christ crucified which is an offense, 00:04:17.92\00:04:21.52 it is the same word. 00:04:21.56\00:04:22.89 Right it's an offense it's a scandal, it's a stumbling 00:04:22.92\00:04:25.29 block, "and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those 00:04:25.33\00:04:27.83 "who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power 00:04:27.86\00:04:30.33 "of God and the wisdom of God. 00:04:30.37\00:04:32.50 So we have this idea here that the scandal 00:04:32.53\00:04:36.77 is something shameful. 00:04:36.81\00:04:40.14 Why is it that the Jews would see the 00:04:40.18\00:04:43.08 cross as so offensive? 00:04:43.11\00:04:45.35 Well when you think about the Jews took a lot of pride 00:04:45.38\00:04:47.88 in their position as God's chosen people. 00:04:47.92\00:04:51.32 To think that Jesus was claiming to be the King of the 00:04:51.39\00:04:55.99 Jews, claiming to be the Messiah, their leader, their 00:04:56.02\00:05:00.96 ruler, the representative and that He would be someone 00:05:01.00\00:05:05.83 who has died on a cross. 00:05:05.87\00:05:07.94 The most shameful, the most disgraceful of any possible 00:05:08.00\00:05:12.44 death that could be imposed upon someone. 00:05:12.47\00:05:18.15 That was so unreal to them, they could not fathom why we 00:05:18.18\00:05:22.18 would want to believe in someone who had only brought 00:05:22.22\00:05:26.22 shame and reproach upon them. 00:05:26.25\00:05:27.89 Absolutely, and that's where we find in Romans 9 where 00:05:27.92\00:05:33.26 the same word appears again as stumbling block, translated 00:05:33.29\00:05:37.60 stumbling block, Romans 9 and we have looked at this one 00:05:37.63\00:05:41.97 before Romans 9:30 we will start there. 00:05:42.00\00:05:46.61 The apostle Paul writes, "what shall we say then? 00:05:46.64\00:05:49.68 "That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, 00:05:49.71\00:05:52.68 "have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness 00:05:52.71\00:05:55.52 of faith. " You see this is the whole thing that we see 00:05:55.55\00:05:58.69 here in Galatia is that they were pursuing righteousness. 00:05:58.72\00:06:01.56 The only problem is they were pursuing it in all the wrong 00:06:01.59\00:06:04.56 places, instead of the only place that righteousness can 00:06:04.59\00:06:07.50 come, which he will flush out here in a moment. 00:06:07.56\00:06:10.63 They sought righteousness by other means, they sought 00:06:10.67\00:06:13.80 to be good and become just by other means. 00:06:13.84\00:06:17.17 And so it says, "That Gentiles, who did not pursue 00:06:17.21\00:06:20.64 "righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the 00:06:20.68\00:06:24.21 "righteousness that comes by faith; but Israel, pursuing 00:06:24.25\00:06:27.88 "the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of 00:06:27.92\00:06:31.49 "righteousness. Why?" Because they were trying to keep the law 00:06:31.52\00:06:34.99 That's not what it says is it? You see their whole issue 00:06:35.02\00:06:38.33 wasn't about trying to be good and whole issue was they 00:06:38.39\00:06:41.63 did not seek it by faith in Christ. 00:06:41.66\00:06:43.70 There is nothing wrong, in fact there is everything right 00:06:43.73\00:06:47.10 with seeking to obey the requirements of God, but we have 00:06:47.14\00:06:50.51 to realize that we must have Christ to do it. 00:06:50.54\00:06:53.74 We need that transformation, so he says, "why? Because 00:06:53.78\00:06:56.68 "they did not seek it by faith," why didn't they seek it 00:06:56.71\00:06:59.41 by faith? Notice! "But as it were, by the works of the 00:06:59.45\00:07:02.95 "law. For they stumbled at that" scandalon, at that 00:07:02.98\00:07:06.82 offense, "stumbling stone. As it is written: behold, 00:07:06.86\00:07:10.06 "I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, 00:07:10.09\00:07:13.93 "and whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame. " 00:07:13.96\00:07:17.00 Which is interesting, the word is a word about shame and 00:07:17.07\00:07:19.83 whoever believes on Him it will be just the opposite, 00:07:19.87\00:07:22.60 he will not be put to shame. 00:07:22.64\00:07:23.97 So we come to Chapter 10 - it's almost an encouragement 00:07:24.01\00:07:25.94 to them that think it's shameful to believe on Him and 00:07:25.97\00:07:28.18 if you believe on Me you will not be put to shame. 00:07:28.21\00:07:30.55 That's right, it's absolutely right so notice again in 00:07:30.58\00:07:32.88 verse 3 of chapter 10 where it says, 00:07:32.91\00:07:35.22 "for they being ignorant of God's righteousness. " 00:07:35.25\00:07:38.65 The fact God's righteousness can only come from God. 00:07:38.69\00:07:41.79 "In seeking to establish their own righteousness. " 00:07:41.82\00:07:44.89 See they were obeying and people will say the Jews 00:07:44.93\00:07:47.60 obeyed the law, they obeyed their own idea of law. 00:07:47.60\00:07:50.37 The Bible doesn't call it God's righteousness. 00:07:50.40\00:07:52.70 Up here before we read it being called the 00:07:52.73\00:07:54.94 Ten Commandments the law of righteousness. 00:07:54.97\00:07:57.11 It's a righteous law but "they sought their own 00:07:57.14\00:08:00.68 "righteousness, and have not submitted to the 00:08:00.71\00:08:03.81 "righteousness of God. " And notice verse 4 00:08:03.85\00:08:06.88 "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to 00:08:06.92\00:08:10.62 "everyone who believes. " 00:08:10.65\00:08:11.99 That word end means the outcome, that the end justifies 00:08:12.02\00:08:16.56 the means in that kind of sense. 00:08:16.59\00:08:17.93 In other words, if you are looking for righteousness, 00:08:17.96\00:08:19.79 the final place for righteousness is Christ. 00:08:19.83\00:08:22.73 The end of the law, in other words, the outcome of the law 00:08:22.76\00:08:25.73 when you look at the law of God is a picture of God's 00:08:25.77\00:08:28.20 righteousness, but it is not the actual righteousness. 00:08:28.24\00:08:30.64 Where do you find that? In the person 00:08:30.67\00:08:32.31 of Jesus Christ alone. - Amen, that is powerful. 00:08:32.34\00:08:35.41 You know I think we need to go back to Galatians 00:08:35.44\00:08:38.41 for just a moment, it addresses a question here that we 00:08:38.45\00:08:42.45 haven't fully answered. 00:08:42.48\00:08:43.82 It is back in Galatians 5:11 and it says, 00:08:43.85\00:08:47.49 "and I, brethren... if I still preach circumcision, why do 00:08:47.52\00:08:51.49 "I still suffer persecution? Then the offense of the 00:08:51.53\00:08:54.66 "cross has ceased. " 00:08:54.73\00:08:56.46 Something about preaching circumcision would cause the 00:08:56.50\00:08:59.67 offense of the cross to cease. 00:08:59.70\00:09:01.90 What is that? What is it about circumcision and the 00:09:01.94\00:09:04.61 gospel of circumcision, they were promoting, that would 00:09:04.64\00:09:06.91 cause the offense of the cross to no longer be there? 00:09:06.94\00:09:09.14 I think the answer is in what we have been talking about. 00:09:09.18\00:09:11.35 That Christ is the only way. 00:09:11.38\00:09:13.05 The Bible says, Jesus Himself says that I am the way, 00:09:13.08\00:09:16.69 the truth and the life. I am the door. 00:09:16.72\00:09:18.55 There is no other way to come to the Father except through 00:09:18.59\00:09:21.56 Me and so Jesus makes it very clear that there is only one 00:09:21.62\00:09:24.56 way and that is through Him. 00:09:24.59\00:09:25.93 When you preach circumcision now you are preaching you do 00:09:25.96\00:09:29.86 not need to go through Christ, you don't need the process 00:09:29.90\00:09:34.04 of confession and contrition of heart and all that is 00:09:34.07\00:09:38.21 involved in coming to Christ. 00:09:38.24\00:09:39.91 Instead you can very cleanly do something else, maybe 00:09:39.94\00:09:43.21 it's external behavior, in this case circumcision, and 00:09:43.24\00:09:46.48 that replaces and becomes another way there for the cross, 00:09:46.51\00:09:48.92 you can still believe in the cross but it is no longer as 00:09:48.95\00:09:51.32 offensive if you give me another way. 00:09:51.35\00:09:53.62 That's right, it reminds me Jim of that thing I hear 00:09:53.66\00:09:56.32 from some people where Christianity is a crutch 00:09:56.36\00:09:58.83 for weak minded people. 00:09:58.86\00:10:00.33 Christians believe in creation and they have this big God 00:10:00.36\00:10:03.67 because they are narrow minded, or what ever the case 00:10:03.70\00:10:07.47 may be and what it really is vaunting of human pride 00:10:07.50\00:10:11.24 and human righteousness. 00:10:11.27\00:10:12.64 I feel that I don't need Christ because I am better than 00:10:12.67\00:10:16.18 that, and that may be an outside Christianity aspect of 00:10:16.21\00:10:19.65 this, but an insight Christianity aspect is this. 00:10:19.68\00:10:22.35 When the Word of God says something, and this is becoming 00:10:22.38\00:10:26.42 more and more common. 00:10:26.45\00:10:27.79 We say well that is your interpretation and not 00:10:27.82\00:10:29.62 necessarily my interpretation and we start to make 00:10:29.66\00:10:31.79 leeway for doing exactly what God says. 00:10:31.86\00:10:35.03 What we are doing is making another way. 00:10:35.06\00:10:38.23 I know what God says but I don't think it applies to me. 00:10:38.27\00:10:40.80 We are making another way and that is our circumcision. 00:10:40.87\00:10:43.47 Suddenly the offensiveness of Christianity isn't so 00:10:43.51\00:10:46.07 offensive anymore, hey I can become a Christian if I don't 00:10:46.11\00:10:48.31 have to be completely Christian. 00:10:48.34\00:10:50.71 That's right, and the Bible says we can only serve one 00:10:50.75\00:10:53.01 master, we can't serve two masters. 00:10:53.05\00:10:54.42 If you allow them to have many masters then there is a lot 00:10:54.45\00:10:57.55 more adherence to Christianity. 00:10:57.59\00:10:58.92 This idea of the offense of the cross, it really has to 00:10:58.95\00:11:03.89 do with the fact that the cross is about me being 00:11:03.93\00:11:06.83 crucified with Christ and there is a statement out of 00:11:06.86\00:11:09.70 a book I want to share. 00:11:09.73\00:11:11.07 It's called 'The Great Controversy' on this point. 00:11:11.10\00:11:13.17 I thought I would read that to our viewers in closing. 00:11:13.20\00:11:16.34 "A religion of externals is attractive to the un-renewed 00:11:16.37\00:11:19.47 "heart. Thousands who have not an experimental 00:11:19.51\00:11:22.21 "knowledge of Christ will be led to accept the forms 00:11:22.24\00:11:25.05 "of godliness without the power. Such a religion is just 00:11:25.08\00:11:28.02 "what the multitudes desire. To him who loves self- 00:11:28.05\00:11:31.12 "indulgence it is more pleasing to confess to a fellow 00:11:31.15\00:11:34.02 "mortal then to open their soul to God. It is more 00:11:34.06\00:11:37.03 "palatable to human nature to do penitents than to 00:11:37.06\00:11:40.46 "renounce sin. It is easier to mortify the flesh by 00:11:40.50\00:11:43.63 "sackcloth and nettles and galling chains than to 00:11:43.67\00:11:46.84 "crucify fleshly lusts. 00:11:46.87\00:11:48.87 "Heavy as the yoke which the cardinal heart is 00:11:48.90\00:11:51.31 "willing to bear rather than bow to the yoke of Christ. " 00:11:51.37\00:11:54.11 They were willing to be circumcised, even though that 00:11:54.14\00:11:56.85 was a difficult thing, they were willing to do anything as 00:11:56.88\00:11:59.85 long as they didn't have to surrender their cardinal heart 00:11:59.88\00:12:03.22 and crucify the fleshly lusts, the cherished sins that 00:12:03.25\00:12:06.49 perhaps for more precious to them than Christ. 00:12:06.52\00:12:10.03 That's right, there are other experiences where everybody 00:12:10.09\00:12:16.36 follow some of what God says. 00:12:16.40\00:12:18.00 I believe that, everybody follow some of what God says. 00:12:18.07\00:12:21.97 But there are areas that especially tend to be areas 00:12:22.00\00:12:25.87 where we say well I have given up most of the big sins and 00:12:25.91\00:12:28.61 I only have a couple little ones left. 00:12:28.64\00:12:30.15 I would suggest to you that those little ones, those are 00:12:30.18\00:12:32.98 the big ones and that is why you can't give them up. 00:12:33.01\00:12:35.88 What happens is those are the areas where the flesh still 00:12:35.92\00:12:38.75 holds us in its grip. 00:12:38.79\00:12:40.42 Where the fallen nature, our sinful nature still has 00:12:40.46\00:12:43.89 dominion over us and we are slaves of sin. 00:12:43.96\00:12:46.70 What the Lord is trying to do here, what Paul is trying to 00:12:46.76\00:12:49.66 do with the Galatians and the Lord is trying to do for us 00:12:49.70\00:12:54.07 is address that need of a thorough submission to the will 00:12:54.14\00:12:58.07 of God, the accepting of God's will above my own will. 00:12:58.11\00:13:02.08 A total surrender to Christ. 00:13:02.11\00:13:06.08 I want to appeal to you who are watching, lay those things 00:13:06.11\00:13:09.52 aside, lay them at the feet of Jesus and receive 00:13:09.55\00:13:11.89 Him completely into your heart. 00:13:11.92\00:13:14.22
