Welcome to another episode of Books of the Book. 00:00:22.08\00:00:24.79 We are studying the book of Galatians and I am 00:00:24.82\00:00:27.26 Pastor Mark Howard, I'm the Pastor of the Gobels 00:00:27.29\00:00:29.42 Seventh-day Adventist church in Michigan as well as 00:00:29.46\00:00:31.73 Director of the Emmanuel Institute of evangelism, 00:00:31.76\00:00:34.10 a school that trains people to share their faith. 00:00:34.13\00:00:36.50 I'm here at my co-host and brother Jim. 00:00:36.53\00:00:38.97 If my name is Jim Howard and I am the Pastor of the 00:00:39.00\00:00:41.60 Detroit Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist church and 00:00:41.64\00:00:44.21 South Lyon Seventh-day Adventist church also 00:00:44.24\00:00:46.41 in the Michigan conference. 00:00:46.44\00:00:48.11 And we have been studying in the book of Galatians. 00:00:48.14\00:00:51.15 A powerful book in the New Testament and we have had 00:00:51.21\00:00:54.18 a lot of good studies. 00:00:54.25\00:00:55.68 There is a lot packed in this book Jim. 00:00:55.72\00:00:57.09 We are actually up to chapter 5 and if you are watching 00:00:57.12\00:01:01.79 at home, you have your Bibles with you, or a Bible nearby 00:01:01.82\00:01:05.99 grab that in follow us into chapter 5 of Galatians. 00:01:06.03\00:01:09.43 You go to the New Testament Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, 00:01:09.46\00:01:12.73 Acts, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians and then Galatians. 00:01:12.77\00:01:16.17 We are going to Galatians Chapter 5 and today we are 00:01:16.20\00:01:20.54 going to pick up their in verse 7 and we will get a 00:01:20.58\00:01:24.88 running start there into what the apostle Paul calls 00:01:24.95\00:01:29.22 the offensive of the cross. 00:01:29.25\00:01:31.92 Galatians 5:7 he says to these Galatian believers, 00:01:31.95\00:01:35.32 "you ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? 00:01:35.39\00:01:39.43 "This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you. 00:01:39.46\00:01:43.43 "A little leaven leavens the whole lump. I have 00:01:43.47\00:01:47.40 "confidence in you, in the Lord, that you will have no 00:01:47.47\00:01:51.21 "other mind; but he who troubles you shall bear his 00:01:51.24\00:01:54.84 "judgment, whoever he is. 11. And I, brethren, if I 00:01:54.88\00:01:58.38 "still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer 00:01:58.41\00:02:01.88 "persecution? Then the offense of the cross has ceased. " 00:02:01.92\00:02:05.82 Now there is a lot in there, but we are going to focus 00:02:05.85\00:02:09.72 today on this idea of the offense of the cross. 00:02:09.76\00:02:11.96 Here are the things Jim, that I am picking up on this. 00:02:11.99\00:02:15.86 There's something about the cross that is offensive to 00:02:15.90\00:02:19.77 those that are preaching circumcision. 00:02:19.80\00:02:21.54 Furthermore, persecution is resulting from preaching the 00:02:21.57\00:02:25.27 cross but evidently not from preaching circumcision. 00:02:25.31\00:02:28.94 As Paul says, if I would start preaching circumcision 00:02:28.98\00:02:32.58 I wouldn't be persecuted. 00:02:32.61\00:02:34.52 Preaching circumcision somehow makes the cross 00:02:34.55\00:02:37.62 non offensive and we want to delve into this and find 00:02:37.69\00:02:42.46 out what it is about the cross that is offensive to 00:02:42.49\00:02:47.23 those who preach circumcision and why. 00:02:47.23\00:02:49.20 And what is it about circum- cision that takes away that 00:02:49.26\00:02:53.77 offensiveness to the cross? 00:02:53.80\00:02:55.60 That is important and I think in order to understand 00:02:55.64\00:02:58.54 that, we need to look back to the real meaning of 00:02:58.57\00:03:01.24 circumcision, we have talked about this in previous 00:03:01.28\00:03:03.85 episodes but there is one particular passage that really 00:03:03.88\00:03:06.45 feeds in well to this passage in Galatians 5. 00:03:06.48\00:03:09.05 It is found in Romans 4:9, Romans 4:9. 00:03:09.08\00:03:17.23 right after Acts comes Romans. 00:03:17.26\00:03:19.79 It says, "Does this blessedness then come upon the 00:03:19.83\00:03:24.00 "circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also? 00:03:24.03\00:03:28.07 "For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for 00:03:28.10\00:03:31.74 "righteousness. " So he received his righteousness by 00:03:31.77\00:03:35.41 faith. "How then was accounted? While he was 00:03:35.44\00:03:39.01 "circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, 00:03:39.05\00:03:43.82 "but while uncircumcised. And he received the sign of 00:03:43.85\00:03:47.86 "circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith 00:03:47.89\00:03:51.73 "which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might 00:03:51.76\00:03:54.86 "be the father of all those who believe, though they are 00:03:54.93\00:03:58.00 "uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed 00:03:58.03\00:04:01.10 "to them also, and the father of circumcision to those 00:04:01.14\00:04:04.24 "who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk 00:04:04.27\00:04:07.38 "in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had 00:04:07.41\00:04:10.51 "while still uncircumcised. " 00:04:10.55\00:04:12.68 His point is, Abraham received that righteousness that 00:04:12.71\00:04:16.55 was accounted to him prior to being circumcised. 00:04:16.58\00:04:19.75 So circumcision didn't produce the righteousness, that 00:04:19.79\00:04:23.46 is not where he got the righteousness. 00:04:23.53\00:04:24.86 He got it through faith in Christ, the promised sacrifice 00:04:24.89\00:04:29.36 and faith in God's promise. 00:04:29.40\00:04:31.13 In expressing that faith God accounted that to him as 00:04:31.17\00:04:35.04 righteousness, so what was happening in the days of the 00:04:35.07\00:04:38.94 Galatians was that they had perverted the idea of 00:04:38.97\00:04:42.24 circumcision as a sign of righteousness, which is 00:04:42.28\00:04:45.55 obtained through faith. 00:04:45.58\00:04:47.15 Instead of seeking to gain righteousness through faith in 00:04:47.18\00:04:50.82 Christ, they were actually not righteousness by faith 00:04:50.85\00:04:54.46 believers, but righteousness by circumcision. 00:04:54.49\00:04:57.23 I think our viewers may be thinking that is not something 00:04:57.29\00:05:03.93 that is an issue today in our church. 00:05:03.97\00:05:05.77 That is not an issue among believers. 00:05:05.80\00:05:07.54 What is interesting, the reality is that they saw 00:05:07.57\00:05:12.47 something they could do that basically took the place of 00:05:12.51\00:05:17.71 the righteousness of Christ. 00:05:17.78\00:05:19.61 In other words, they didn't need that righteousness of 00:05:19.65\00:05:21.88 Christ because they had circumcision. 00:05:21.92\00:05:24.25 While no Christian would say off-the-cuff, oh yeah I 00:05:24.29\00:05:27.29 don't believe I need the righteousness of Christ, 00:05:27.32\00:05:31.63 we find in our demeanor sometimes, the way we think 00:05:31.66\00:05:35.16 through things that may be just exactly what we are 00:05:35.20\00:05:38.70 thinking, for example. 00:05:38.73\00:05:40.07 In my ministry with the Emmanuel Institute, and I know 00:05:40.10\00:05:43.47 you have done similar things with your church. 00:05:43.51\00:05:45.64 I go out and we share our faith often times from house 00:05:45.67\00:05:48.44 to house, we will go door to door. 00:05:48.48\00:05:49.81 One of the things I have done its survey people about 00:05:49.84\00:05:53.18 their own religious beliefs. 00:05:53.21\00:05:54.95 Whatever they happen to be. 00:05:54.98\00:05:56.65 It is interesting Jim, that not limited to Christians, 00:05:56.69\00:06:00.96 Christians shouldn't even be in the crowd, the reality is. 00:06:00.99\00:06:05.13 But many different religions, Christians included, 00:06:05.16\00:06:09.73 people will say when you ask them about a future life. 00:06:09.76\00:06:13.47 An afterlife, they believe they are going to be a part 00:06:13.50\00:06:17.17 of an afterlife. What gives you that confidence? 00:06:17.21\00:06:20.08 The answer that most people give is, because I am 00:06:20.11\00:06:23.58 a good person, because I do good things, because I do 00:06:23.61\00:06:27.28 thus and so and in reality they don't answer what 00:06:27.32\00:06:30.19 they should answer, even like I said some Christians. 00:06:30.22\00:06:33.89 The answer should be I have accepted Jesus Christ as my 00:06:33.92\00:06:37.59 Savior and He has given His righteousness by faith. 00:06:37.63\00:06:40.36 - yeah that is right. - But when we say because 00:06:40.40\00:06:43.06 I am a good person and do good things what, we are 00:06:43.10\00:06:46.67 actually saying is my basis of my salvation is because 00:06:46.70\00:06:50.27 of my own doings. 00:06:50.31\00:06:52.47 Yeah if someone thinks I am a good person, I help to 00:06:52.54\00:06:56.11 shovel the neighbors walk, or I do kind things at work, 00:06:56.14\00:07:00.15 I'm always friendly and they get a sense of morality that 00:07:00.18\00:07:04.12 just has to do with not being a really bad person. 00:07:04.15\00:07:07.46 For them shoveling the walk is circumcision. 00:07:07.49\00:07:11.23 - that's right! - that's their thing and maybe it is 00:07:11.26\00:07:14.46 just going to church. 00:07:14.46\00:07:16.10 Whatever it is they're certain particular things give them 00:07:16.13\00:07:19.47 confidence that they are okay is their circumcision. 00:07:19.50\00:07:22.17 Not that there's anything wrong with going to church, or 00:07:22.20\00:07:24.74 shoveling a walk just like we have already talked about. 00:07:24.77\00:07:26.94 There is nothing wrong inherently with circumcision, 00:07:26.98\00:07:29.04 but the attitude and the belief that it was their shoveling 00:07:29.08\00:07:32.71 the driveway, helping out in a soup kitchen or what have 00:07:32.75\00:07:36.38 you that made them a good person. 00:07:36.42\00:07:38.69 - right, that's exactly right. 00:07:38.72\00:07:40.96 So we talked about that and you brought this up before in 00:07:40.99\00:07:43.32 Romans 2, maybe we ought to look at this passage. 00:07:43.36\00:07:45.53 Romans 2:25 the apostle makes a point here. 00:07:45.56\00:07:51.23 He says, "for circumcision is indeed profitable if you 00:07:51.27\00:07:55.70 "keep the law, but if you are a breaker of the law, your 00:07:55.74\00:08:00.21 "circumcision has become uncircumcision. " 00:08:00.24\00:08:02.71 Now here is another step to that. 00:08:02.78\00:08:04.31 Sometimes Jim, for example maybe I have some bitterness, 00:08:04.35\00:08:09.58 some grudge against somebody in church. 00:08:09.62\00:08:11.69 Or a neighbor and I go to another neighbor and shovel 00:08:11.72\00:08:14.72 their walk. Then I go down to the soup kitchen 00:08:14.76\00:08:17.73 and help with that. 00:08:17.76\00:08:19.09 And then I say that I am a good person and because I do 00:08:19.13\00:08:23.60 do those things I offset, or excuse myself from doing that 00:08:23.63\00:08:28.30 which I know God requires of me. 00:08:28.34\00:08:30.11 This is what we are talking about when we talk about the 00:08:30.14\00:08:31.87 circumcision here, this whole issue in Galatians. 00:08:31.94\00:08:34.28 They were taking circumcision as a substitute for obeying 00:08:34.31\00:08:38.95 what God had said. 00:08:38.98\00:08:40.32 I keep some of God's Command- ments, I don't really feel 00:08:40.35\00:08:42.35 comfortable with keeping all of them, so I will help out 00:08:42.38\00:08:44.85 a lot in the community. These types of things. 00:08:44.89\00:08:47.26 That circumcision actually becomes, because they don't 00:08:47.29\00:08:52.76 have the substance it actually becomes, the sign becomes 00:08:52.79\00:08:58.20 a meaningless mockery. - yeah, exactly! 00:08:58.23\00:09:01.64 You were talking to me about this fruitless fig tree 00:09:01.67\00:09:04.94 that really pro-trade that. 00:09:04.97\00:09:08.08 Maybe you can make a comment on that. 00:09:08.11\00:09:09.44 The story of the fig tree where Jesus comes by the fig 00:09:09.48\00:09:11.91 tree and there is all these leaves at He goes and looks 00:09:11.95\00:09:14.82 for fruit on it because typically when you come to a fig 00:09:14.88\00:09:17.72 tree and all the fig tree leaves start to fill out 00:09:17.75\00:09:23.29 the plant after the fruit begins to grow. 00:09:23.32\00:09:26.29 So when you see a fig tree full of leaves, it's 00:09:26.33\00:09:30.13 advertising, hey I have fruit on me come have some. 00:09:30.17\00:09:34.00 So Jesus was hungry, He saw the leaves and went over 00:09:34.04\00:09:37.87 and there was no fruit. 00:09:37.91\00:09:40.18 It is the same way when I say I am a Christian, people 00:09:40.21\00:09:43.78 should be able to expect fruit of the tree. 00:09:43.81\00:09:46.01 - right! - people should be able to expect that I 00:09:46.08\00:09:48.28 would live like a Christian and be obedient to the 00:09:48.32\00:09:50.49 principles of God's law. 00:09:50.52\00:09:52.25 But when I make that profession, like the sign of 00:09:52.29\00:09:55.86 circumcision it's profitable if you keep the commandments, 00:09:55.89\00:09:58.63 but if you are not keeping the commandments and your 00:09:58.66\00:10:00.80 heart is not obedient to God then you are advertising 00:10:00.83\00:10:02.83 something you do not have. 00:10:02.90\00:10:04.40 - the heart is exactly the issue there, because what 00:10:04.43\00:10:07.84 was going on here in Galatia is that circumcision was 00:10:07.87\00:10:11.21 something you could do without the heart having to 00:10:11.24\00:10:15.01 be changed, and remember the heart is where the most 00:10:15.08\00:10:18.81 cherished things are held. 00:10:18.85\00:10:20.92 So when we talk about the need for a heart religion, 00:10:20.95\00:10:25.22 it's not just talking about having love for others and 00:10:25.25\00:10:29.46 warmth of affection. 00:10:29.49\00:10:31.13 It is also talking about that which shelters those 00:10:31.16\00:10:35.26 sinful practices that we do not want to let go of. 00:10:35.30\00:10:39.30 So they were looking at circumcision as a way to avoid 00:10:39.33\00:10:43.30 the religion of the heart. 00:10:43.34\00:10:45.44 So the problem was they didn't have that inward 00:10:45.47\00:10:48.61 righteousness because circumcision can't bring 00:10:48.64\00:10:51.75 righteousness. - that's right. 00:10:51.78\00:10:53.42 Righteousness is something that we have to come to 00:10:53.45\00:10:56.22 grips with and it is so crucial, this is what 00:10:56.25\00:10:58.32 Paul keeps bringing up here. 00:10:58.39\00:10:59.72 There is a story in the Bible of the rich young ruler. 00:10:59.75\00:11:03.09 This young man comes to Jesus and he says, good teacher 00:11:03.12\00:11:06.49 what thing must I do, or what things must I do to 00:11:06.53\00:11:09.33 inherit eternal life? 00:11:09.36\00:11:10.70 You find it in Matthew chapter 19 as well as Mark 10. 00:11:10.73\00:11:14.24 What good thing must I do that I might inherit eternal 00:11:14.27\00:11:18.41 life? And Jesus says to him why do you call Me good? 00:11:18.44\00:11:22.54 There is only one who is good and that is God. 00:11:22.58\00:11:25.25 In that statement Jesus was trying to convey to this 00:11:25.28\00:11:28.88 young man that there is no such thing as righteousness 00:11:28.92\00:11:32.15 apart from God, man has no such thing as righteousness. 00:11:32.19\00:11:35.39 Paul makes a point in Romans 3, and this is a hard 00:11:35.42\00:11:40.56 hitting passage for the human heart. 00:11:40.60\00:11:44.30 It is hard for us to take this, we like to say I may 00:11:44.33\00:11:47.80 not be the best person, but don't tell me I'm not a good 00:11:47.84\00:11:51.31 person at all. 00:11:51.34\00:11:52.81 But this is what the Scripture says, this is the condition 00:11:52.84\00:11:54.78 that God pronounces upon you and me. 00:11:54.81\00:11:57.18 He says, Romans 3:10 he says, "As it is written: There is 00:11:57.21\00:12:02.65 "none righteous," it is almost as much as he perceives, 00:12:02.68\00:12:08.02 well he is quoting actually from Isaiah. 00:12:08.06\00:12:10.86 But it is almost as he perceives that we are going to 00:12:10.89\00:12:13.09 rebut that, whoa, whoa, wait a minute. 00:12:13.13\00:12:15.43 Nobody righteous? " No, not one" he says. 00:12:15.46\00:12:17.73 11. "There is none who understands; there is none who 00:12:17.80\00:12:20.24 "seeks after God. 12. They have all turned aside; 00:12:20.27\00:12:22.67 "they have together become unprofitable; there is none 00:12:22.70\00:12:25.64 "who does good, no, not one. " 00:12:25.71\00:12:29.14 The point being made here is man has no righteousness, 00:12:29.18\00:12:33.58 the only place to get righteousness is not in Hindu, 00:12:33.62\00:12:37.85 in a Hindu god, or in Buddha, or in anything else, or 00:12:37.89\00:12:42.09 in some atheistic philosophy. 00:12:42.12\00:12:43.93 The only place to get saving righteousness is in God, 00:12:43.96\00:12:47.13 the God of heaven and His Son Jesus Christ who is 00:12:47.23\00:12:50.37 also the eternal God. 00:12:50.40\00:12:51.73 The idea here is that the Lord would have us understand 00:12:51.77\00:12:55.17 our righteousness is not something that we can produce. 00:12:55.20\00:12:58.44 The only way we can get it is to go to Him to receive 00:12:58.47\00:13:01.68 if by faith. - we must have that union with Christ. 00:13:01.71\00:13:04.81 He is the vine as we talked about once before. 00:13:04.85\00:13:07.15 There is one place in Galatians were this is drawn out. 00:13:07.18\00:13:09.68 Maybe could look at this before we go to our break. 00:13:09.72\00:13:14.02 Galatians 5:5 the apostle says, "For we through the 00:13:14.06\00:13:18.23 "Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness 00:13:18.29\00:13:22.40 "by faith. " I like the way he words that. 00:13:22.43\00:13:24.57 He eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. 00:13:24.60\00:13:28.00 Why is he eagerly waiting? Eagerly waiting gives you 00:13:28.07\00:13:30.94 the sense of hungry and thirsting. 00:13:30.97\00:13:32.84 Remember the Bible says, that those who hunger and thirst 00:13:32.87\00:13:34.98 for righteousness they will be filled. 00:13:35.01\00:13:37.25 He says we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness 00:13:37.31\00:13:40.38 how? By faith, faith in Jesus Christ. 00:13:40.42\00:13:43.82 The reason that he is so eagerly waiting is because 00:13:43.85\00:13:46.72 there is nowhere else to get that righteousness. 00:13:46.76\00:13:49.56 He is not going to go somewhere else, he is going to keep 00:13:49.59\00:13:52.59 pressing on, keep pressing the Lord because only through 00:13:52.63\00:13:55.53 the Lord Jesus Christ can he have any hope 00:13:55.56\00:13:57.80 of attaining righteousness. 00:13:57.83\00:13:59.27 Well we will dive back in this a little bit more in 00:13:59.30\00:14:01.77 a moment, but for now we need to take a break. 00:14:01.80\00:14:03.57 We will see you in a few. 00:14:03.61\00:14:04.94
