Welcome back to our study of the book of Galatians. 00:00:07.70\00:00:10.27 Before the break Mark, we were talking about this idea 00:00:10.31\00:00:12.81 drawn out by the apostle Paul in Galatians of the 00:00:12.84\00:00:15.94 two covenants, so we spent some time talking about the 00:00:15.98\00:00:19.11 old and new covenants. 00:00:19.15\00:00:20.48 We were in the book of Hebrews 8 where we discussed 00:00:20.55\00:00:24.19 the new covenant that was given to Israel. 00:00:24.22\00:00:27.82 Given to Israel, but given to all of us because we are 00:00:27.89\00:00:31.46 part of spiritual Israel. 00:00:31.49\00:00:32.83 As we look at that we recognized that the problem with 00:00:32.86\00:00:37.13 the old covenant was with the people. 00:00:37.17\00:00:39.53 The people have made promises that they weren't able to 00:00:39.57\00:00:42.67 keep, the problem was never with the agreement God had 00:00:42.74\00:00:45.34 given the law, because the law is at the heart of the 00:00:45.37\00:00:47.94 new covenant as well. 00:00:47.98\00:00:49.31 - that's right, it's interesting that some people say 00:00:49.34\00:00:51.05 the mistake was that those people said all that the 00:00:51.08\00:00:52.85 Lord spoken we will do, they should have never said that. 00:00:52.91\00:00:55.22 That was the problem! That is not what we find. 00:00:55.25\00:00:57.62 The problem was they said that and stayed apart from God. 00:00:57.65\00:01:01.62 We will look at that more in just a moment. 00:01:01.66\00:01:03.46 What I would like to do briefly to bring us into our 00:01:03.53\00:01:06.83 next section is to look back to Deuteronomy 5 to show 00:01:06.86\00:01:10.67 God's intent was never what the children of Israel were 00:01:10.70\00:01:14.50 doing in the old covenant. 00:01:14.54\00:01:16.64 Let's go to Deuteronomy 5:28 where Moses is recounting 00:01:16.67\00:01:21.11 this experience the children of Israel went through. 00:01:21.14\00:01:25.51 Beginning with the Ten Command- ments and the old covenant. 00:01:25.58\00:01:29.15 It says, "then the Lord heard the voice of your words 00:01:29.18\00:01:31.95 "when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me; I have 00:01:31.99\00:01:34.56 "heard the voice of the words of this people which they 00:01:34.59\00:01:37.36 "have spoken to you. " And they said all that the Lord 00:01:37.39\00:01:39.63 has said we will do. And this is what he says about it. 00:01:39.66\00:01:41.86 - he says it right before in verse 27. - right. 00:01:41.90\00:01:44.10 Oh yes, that's right, we didn't read that part. 00:01:44.17\00:01:46.87 "27. You go near and hear all that the Lord our God 00:01:46.90\00:01:50.07 "many say, and tell us all that the Lord our God says 00:01:50.11\00:01:53.21 "to you, and we will hear and do it. " 00:01:53.24\00:01:54.64 So Lord heard all of that and it says in the middle of 00:01:54.68\00:01:58.11 verse 28, "they are right in all that they have spoken. " 00:01:58.15\00:02:02.08 Then he says in verse 29 and this is the key "oh, that 00:02:02.12\00:02:05.92 "they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me 00:02:05.95\00:02:09.12 "and always keep all My commandments, that it might be 00:02:09.16\00:02:11.96 "well with them and with their children for ever!" 00:02:11.99\00:02:14.73 God wanted to bless them, He wanted to give that to them. 00:02:14.73\00:02:18.03 He knew that they didn't have the heart in them to do 00:02:18.07\00:02:21.37 what they were promising to do. 00:02:21.40\00:02:22.74 Only if they came close to Him and found the Spirit of God 00:02:22.77\00:02:25.44 to enter into their experience could they have that heart. 00:02:25.47\00:02:28.24 That is absolutely true so we are coming back to 00:02:28.28\00:02:31.38 Galatians 4:22, and again we read this before and we are 00:02:31.41\00:02:35.48 reviewing it, "for it is written that Abraham had two 00:02:35.52\00:02:39.85 "sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a free woman. 00:02:39.89\00:02:44.23 "But he who was up a bondwoman" that was Ishmael, 00:02:44.26\00:02:47.40 "was born according to the flesh. " Remember the devising, 00:02:47.40\00:02:50.40 the plan of Abraham and Hagar and Sarah? 00:02:50.43\00:02:52.90 They work together, even though God had promised that 00:02:52.97\00:02:55.64 Abraham would have a child and intended for Sarah to 00:02:55.67\00:02:58.31 be the mother of that child. 00:02:58.34\00:02:59.67 They thought maybe God wants us to work it out and they made 00:02:59.71\00:03:01.98 their own plan instead of submitting to God's plan. 00:03:02.01\00:03:04.68 So it was of the flesh, it was their own plan. 00:03:04.71\00:03:07.75 It says, that child Ishmael "was born according to the 00:03:07.78\00:03:11.02 "flesh, and he of the free woman through the promise, which 00:03:11.05\00:03:14.06 "things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: 00:03:14.09\00:03:16.93 "the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, 00:03:16.96\00:03:20.36 "which is Hagar - for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, 00:03:20.40\00:03:23.70 "and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, 00:03:23.73\00:03:26.67 "and is in bondage with her children. " 00:03:26.70\00:03:29.10 Now that is a powerful statement right there and it is 00:03:29.14\00:03:31.17 offensive in fact to a lot of people. 00:03:31.21\00:03:33.11 Paul stated in his day the same goes today that 00:03:33.14\00:03:36.24 the nation of Israel is not equated to the new covenant, 00:03:36.28\00:03:40.12 the old covenant to bondage and not salvation 00:03:40.15\00:03:43.85 agreement or covenant at this point with God. 00:03:43.89\00:03:47.52 Then it says, "26. But the Jerusalem above is free, 00:03:47.56\00:03:52.73 "which is the mother of us all. For it is written: 00:03:52.76\00:03:56.43 "rejoice, old barren, You who do not bear! Break forth 00:03:56.46\00:03:59.47 "and shout, You who are not in labor! For the desolate 00:03:59.50\00:04:02.40 "has many more children than she who has a husband. " 00:04:02.44\00:04:05.27 So the whole idea we are getting here is there are these 00:04:05.31\00:04:08.21 two covenants and he equates them to these experiences. 00:04:08.24\00:04:12.01 You have Hagar the slave girl of Abraham who has a son 00:04:12.05\00:04:15.75 Ishmael and those correspond to the old 00:04:15.78\00:04:20.26 covenant given at Sinai. 00:04:20.29\00:04:22.09 You have Sarah who was promised the child Isaac in an 00:04:22.12\00:04:26.33 impossible situation where they had to put faith 00:04:26.39\00:04:29.76 in the promises of God. 00:04:29.80\00:04:31.17 Isaac's birth equates to a new covenant and the Jerusalem 00:04:31.20\00:04:37.94 above which is the mother of us all. 00:04:37.97\00:04:39.67 That's right, and you can see here the apostle Paul is 00:04:39.71\00:04:42.41 simply using another illustra- tion to draw out the same 00:04:42.44\00:04:45.08 truths he has been doing. 00:04:45.11\00:04:46.58 He talked about the slave verses the son, and now he's 00:04:46.61\00:04:49.75 talking about these two covenants. 00:04:49.78\00:04:51.55 They are touching on the same issue of the flesh 00:04:51.62\00:04:53.82 and the spirit and we will talk more about that 00:04:53.86\00:04:55.99 in a future episode. 00:04:56.02\00:04:57.53 Right now we will touch on a for a moment, this idea 00:04:57.56\00:05:00.66 that Ishmael was born of the flesh. 00:05:00.70\00:05:03.60 This is symbolically talking about the fact that we 00:05:03.63\00:05:07.60 cannot of the flesh, without being born again, without 00:05:07.64\00:05:12.01 union with Christ, we cannot produce anything good. 00:05:12.04\00:05:16.38 Even what we do outwardly that is good has wrong motives. 00:05:16.41\00:05:20.02 So many people think that they are a good person and 00:05:20.05\00:05:23.39 that is the natural thought some of them but the reality 00:05:23.42\00:05:26.76 is that the motives give us away. 00:05:26.79\00:05:29.16 It makes me think of the words of Jesus to Nicodemus, 00:05:29.19\00:05:32.13 that which is born of flesh is flesh, that which is born 00:05:32.16\00:05:34.76 of Spirit is spirit, the spirit can't produce the flesh, 00:05:34.83\00:05:37.40 the flesh can't produce the Spirit. 00:05:37.43\00:05:39.17 In Isaiah 64:6 I think it where it says, all our 00:05:39.20\00:05:42.94 righteousness's are as filthy rags. 00:05:42.97\00:05:45.87 The best we can do, even when we are doing our very best 00:05:45.91\00:05:50.35 without that changed heart of humility, love and that 00:05:50.41\00:05:54.42 which is unselfish, the best we can do is filthy rags. 00:05:54.45\00:05:58.52 So this idea of the old covenant that is described here, 00:05:58.55\00:06:02.92 is related to this Sinai experience where they made an 00:06:02.96\00:06:07.23 attempt to fulfill God's requirements without 00:06:07.23\00:06:10.50 union with Christ, which is totally futile. 00:06:10.53\00:06:13.74 Jesus makes this point in John 15 and I thought we should 00:06:13.77\00:06:16.47 look at that briefly. 00:06:16.50\00:06:17.94 John 15:5 Jesus was speaking to His disciples and He said, 00:06:17.97\00:06:24.25 "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me 00:06:24.28\00:06:29.88 "and I in him, bears much fruit for without Me you can do 00:06:29.92\00:06:34.22 nothing. " So He is the vine and the only way for us to 00:06:34.26\00:06:38.73 have anything truly good produced out of us, is to have 00:06:38.76\00:06:43.16 an intimate union. 00:06:43.23\00:06:44.63 You think about a vine and branches they are connected. 00:06:44.70\00:06:46.50 The life of one flows into the other. 00:06:46.53\00:06:49.17 More than that though, the life of the branch doesn't flow 00:06:49.24\00:06:51.81 into the vine, it's a vine that gives life to the branch 00:06:51.84\00:06:54.41 or the branch can't exist. 00:06:54.44\00:06:55.78 That was his point, if you are not connected with Me, 00:06:55.81\00:06:58.58 you can do how much? - nothing - absolutely. 00:06:58.61\00:07:01.38 Absolutely nothing. So here we have this picture of the 00:07:01.42\00:07:04.52 old covenant where it is a futile attempt to fulfill 00:07:04.55\00:07:07.59 God's requirements when we are not connected to Christ. 00:07:07.62\00:07:11.19 There's lots of people who go to church, they live a good 00:07:11.23\00:07:14.73 moral life, they don't have devotional time. 00:07:14.76\00:07:17.87 They don't spend time in prayer and pleading for purity 00:07:17.90\00:07:21.04 oh their soul, they don't spend time reading the word 00:07:21.07\00:07:23.84 and allowing the Lord Jesus to speak to their heart and 00:07:23.87\00:07:26.64 point out those rough spots drawing them into union 00:07:26.68\00:07:29.44 with Him, it's a futile attempt. 00:07:29.48\00:07:32.38 They may be going through the motions, others may look 00:07:32.41\00:07:35.15 at them as sincere Christians, but the reality is that 00:07:35.18\00:07:38.32 lack of vital life force from Christ is causing them 00:07:38.35\00:07:41.46 to only have filthy rags. 00:07:41.49\00:07:43.29 Jim the reality is, I've been there, you've been there, 00:07:43.32\00:07:45.46 you used to think you are good person and I thought I 00:07:45.49\00:07:47.60 was a good person before I came to Christ. 00:07:47.60\00:07:49.03 The reality is our standard of righteousness is very 00:07:49.06\00:07:52.93 low and we may put on our act, and we may think we are 00:07:52.97\00:07:56.81 good people, but the fact is we have issues that God 00:07:56.84\00:07:59.84 allows to come into our lives to test our character 00:07:59.87\00:08:02.88 and to prove us and show that we are not made up to what 00:08:02.91\00:08:06.72 we would be. 00:08:06.75\00:08:08.18 We may have something happen we just blow up and lose 00:08:08.22\00:08:10.35 our temper and say things we regret and then we say, 00:08:10.39\00:08:12.52 I don't know what happened I'm usually a pretty patient 00:08:12.55\00:08:15.06 person, but the fact is and what is being revealed is 00:08:15.09\00:08:17.56 my heart is corrupt. 00:08:17.59\00:08:18.99 You know when you think about it this happens often times 00:08:19.03\00:08:23.47 from a sense of self-confidence. 00:08:23.50\00:08:25.47 We begin to do what's right and making good choices and we 00:08:25.50\00:08:29.54 are close to Christ and then we leave off spending time 00:08:29.57\00:08:33.41 with Him and gradually, I've had it happen in my own 00:08:33.44\00:08:37.18 experience, those old traits of character, that flesh starts 00:08:37.25\00:08:41.18 to come out and I start acting out what I use to act 00:08:41.22\00:08:45.15 out, but I had since moved past because I did not have 00:08:45.19\00:08:49.09 that union with Christ. 00:08:49.12\00:08:50.63 So that is the vital principle that is 00:08:50.69\00:08:52.53 being spoken of here. 00:08:52.59\00:08:53.93 Well let's look further in Galatians Chapter 4:28 00:08:53.96\00:08:57.47 for a moment, it says, "now we, brethren, as Isaac was," 00:08:57.50\00:09:01.60 "are children of promise. But, as he who was born 00:09:01.64\00:09:05.37 "according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born 00:09:05.41\00:09:07.88 "according to the Spirit, even so it is now. " 00:09:07.94\00:09:10.35 I mean if you look at the different examples in the Bible, 00:09:10.38\00:09:13.25 you will find, take Jesus and the Pharisees. 00:09:13.28\00:09:16.28 Jesus was born of the Spirit and the Pharisees persecuted 00:09:16.32\00:09:21.36 Him, they couldn't stand how principled and loving 00:09:21.39\00:09:24.73 Jesus was. - He exposed their iniquity. - exactly! 00:09:24.76\00:09:28.86 If they couldn't stop Him from teaching they had to 00:09:28.90\00:09:32.37 ultimately crucified Him, or urge for His crucifixion. 00:09:32.43\00:09:35.24 They had to get rid of him so that conviction would be 00:09:35.27\00:09:37.74 removed, the same thing happened from a story we mentioned 00:09:37.77\00:09:40.18 in a previous episode of Cain and Abel. 00:09:40.24\00:09:42.11 Abel was just doing what was right, but just being around 00:09:42.14\00:09:46.21 that bothered Cain and he persecuted him because it was 00:09:46.25\00:09:50.29 pointing out his lack, his weakness. 00:09:50.32\00:09:52.99 You may find that sometimes and I know my own experience 00:09:53.02\00:09:55.86 that sometimes you come in the presence of someone who is 00:09:55.89\00:09:58.69 not a Christian and they feel a little awkward. 00:09:58.73\00:10:01.56 You are not trying to do anything to bring any 00:10:01.63\00:10:04.43 condemnation but there is a sense of awkwardness they feel 00:10:04.47\00:10:08.27 and maybe a little bit of envy and what have you because they 00:10:08.30\00:10:12.07 know that they are not exactly where the Lord wants them 00:10:12.11\00:10:14.51 to be, that conviction is being given to them so they 00:10:14.54\00:10:16.88 might turn to Lord. 00:10:16.91\00:10:18.25 They tell themselves they are good people all the time 00:10:18.28\00:10:20.92 until they come into contact with somebody who is good, 00:10:20.95\00:10:23.72 not because of their goodness, but they have been 00:10:23.75\00:10:26.15 transformed by Christ and it is evident. 00:10:26.22\00:10:28.12 - Yeah, that is right, it's exactly right. 00:10:28.16\00:10:29.99 What we want to go ahead into verse, you asked me Jim 00:10:30.03\00:10:33.19 about this and it really hits me to continue on is 00:10:33.23\00:10:36.40 in verse 30 where he says, "nevertheless what does the 00:10:36.46\00:10:39.67 "Scripture say? Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for 00:10:39.70\00:10:42.54 "the son of the bondwoman shall not be in heir with the 00:10:42.57\00:10:45.34 "son of the free woman. " 00:10:45.41\00:10:46.74 The whole idea is that just as Hagar gave birth to a slave 00:10:46.78\00:10:48.91 child, she couldn't give birth to anything else because 00:10:48.94\00:10:51.31 she was a slave. 00:10:51.35\00:10:52.68 So the flesh gives birth to fleshly reasoning. 00:10:52.71\00:10:56.55 What the Bible is saying here is the flesh can't have part 00:10:56.58\00:11:01.79 in the salvation experience, flesh has to be removed. 00:11:01.82\00:11:04.76 So the bondwoman is like flesh, the son has all the 00:11:04.79\00:11:07.66 devisings of the flesh, all those human excuses we make. 00:11:07.76\00:11:11.40 For example, I think of the types of things that people do 00:11:11.43\00:11:14.74 when for example the Scripture calls upon them to forgive 00:11:14.77\00:11:18.34 somebody and they say, I know I should forgive them, but 00:11:18.37\00:11:21.88 you don't know what they have done to me. 00:11:21.91\00:11:24.28 Or somebody marrying outside of the faith, I know 00:11:24.31\00:11:28.25 I shouldn't marry outside the faith, I know that is what 00:11:28.28\00:11:31.05 God says, what the Bible teaches, but the person really 00:11:31.09\00:11:33.39 seems interested and they might be willing to study. 00:11:33.42\00:11:36.42 We make excuses, even though God is clear about what 00:11:36.49\00:11:40.56 His will is, we choose to do it in our own way and yet 00:11:40.60\00:11:44.63 still profess to be following Him. 00:11:44.67\00:11:46.23 We put our reasoning above His reasoning. 00:11:46.27\00:11:48.97 So Lord is saying cast out the bondwoman, cast out 00:11:49.04\00:11:52.21 those reasoning's, those excuses we so often give. 00:11:52.24\00:11:55.34 I want to go back and close with this passage here in 00:11:55.38\00:11:58.45 verse 27, or 26 and 27 because this is powerful. 00:11:58.51\00:12:01.78 The apostle Paul says, "but the Jerusalem above is free, 00:12:01.82\00:12:05.55 "which is the mother of us all. For it is written: 00:12:05.59\00:12:08.49 "rejoice, O barren, you who do not bear! Break forth 00:12:08.52\00:12:11.23 "and shout, you are not in labor! For the desolate," 00:12:11.29\00:12:13.96 speaking of Sarah, "has many more children than 00:12:14.00\00:12:17.57 "she who has a husband. " 00:12:17.60\00:12:19.40 - that's right and he is quoting actually right from 00:12:19.43\00:12:21.97 Isaiah 54 where are he says, "Sing O barren you who have 00:12:22.00\00:12:25.44 not borne" like Sarah she was barren, 00:12:25.47\00:12:28.38 "break forth with singing and cry aloud 00:12:28.41\00:12:31.28 "you who have not labored with child! For more are the 00:12:31.31\00:12:32.98 "children of the desolate than the children of the 00:12:33.01\00:12:34.78 "married woman, says the Lord. Enlarge the place of 00:12:34.85\00:12:36.75 "your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of 00:12:36.79\00:12:38.92 "your dwellings; do not spare: lengthen your cords, and 00:12:38.95\00:12:41.16 "strengthen your stakes. " We are expanding the house here 00:12:41.19\00:12:43.36 "For you shall expand to the right and to the left, and 00:12:43.39\00:12:46.56 "your descendents will inherit the nations, and make the 00:12:46.59\00:12:49.70 "desolate cities inhabited. " 00:12:49.73\00:12:51.40 So Sarah, by giving birth to Isaac, she was desolate but 00:12:51.43\00:12:54.90 been through God's promise Isaac was born and through 00:12:54.94\00:12:59.21 Isaacs line Christ came and through all these not only 00:12:59.24\00:13:03.18 Jews but Gentiles who believed in Christ so it's in time 00:13:03.21\00:13:06.45 to enlarge the tent because all are welcome into the 00:13:06.48\00:13:09.68 family of God. 00:13:09.72\00:13:11.05 This is a powerful truth and we just hope that you too 00:13:11.09\00:13:13.46 will be willing to accept Christ and enter into 00:13:13.49\00:13:16.29 the family of God. 00:13:16.32\00:13:17.73
