Welcome to another episode of Books of the Book. 00:00:23.12\00:00:25.45 I'm Pastor Mark Howard, I'm the director of the 00:00:25.49\00:00:27.52 Emmanuel Institute of evangelism in Michigan 00:00:27.56\00:00:29.56 as well as the Pastor of the 00:00:29.59\00:00:32.19 Gobels Seventh-day Adventist church in Michigan 00:00:32.23\00:00:35.10 and my co-host Jim Howard, my younger brother. 00:00:35.13\00:00:38.30 Yes, I'm Jim Howard also at Pastor of the Michigan 00:00:38.33\00:00:41.47 conference of the Detroit Metropolitan and South Lyon's 00:00:41.50\00:00:44.74 Seventh-day Adventist churches. 00:00:44.77\00:00:46.11 Now we are so glad you are with us today in our 00:00:46.14\00:00:49.68 Bible study and we have been going through 00:00:49.71\00:00:51.15 the book of Galatians. 00:00:51.18\00:00:52.51 A powerful book in the New Testament where the apostle 00:00:52.55\00:00:55.38 Paul gives his clearest defense in the shortest space 00:00:55.42\00:00:58.19 of the Gospel message. 00:00:58.22\00:01:00.32 Somebody may contend the book of Romans but the book 00:01:00.36\00:01:03.26 of Galatians is a compacted Romans and it addresses so 00:01:03.32\00:01:06.90 many powerful gospel truths from different angles so 00:01:06.93\00:01:10.13 that we can really get a grasp on the essence of 00:01:10.17\00:01:14.27 justification by faith, of the obedience of faith. 00:01:14.30\00:01:18.34 Today of the covenants and this is a study we are going 00:01:18.37\00:01:22.24 to look at today on the two covenants. 00:01:22.28\00:01:23.85 We are just going to dive right in with the book of 00:01:23.88\00:01:28.45 Galatians 4 and if you are watching at home and you 00:01:28.48\00:01:31.69 have your Bibles with you we want to encourage you to 00:01:31.72\00:01:34.46 take your Bibles out and turn with us to the book of 00:01:34.49\00:01:37.19 Galatians in the New Testament. 00:01:37.26\00:01:38.83 You go to the Gospels and start out in Matthew, Mark, 00:01:38.86\00:01:40.96 Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 00:01:41.00\00:01:42.40 1 and 2 Corinthians and then Galatians. 00:01:42.43\00:01:45.10 We are in Galatians 4:21 and I'm going to read here, 00:01:45.13\00:01:51.84 "tell me, you who desired to be under the law, do you 00:01:51.91\00:01:58.58 "not hear the law? 22. For it is written that 00:01:58.61\00:02:01.55 "Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, 00:02:01.58\00:02:04.35 "the other by a free woman. 23. But he who was of the 00:02:04.42\00:02:07.72 "bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of 00:02:07.76\00:02:10.96 "free woman through promise,24. which things are symbolic. 00:02:10.99\00:02:15.00 "For these are the two covenants the one from Mount Sinai 00:02:15.03\00:02:19.03 "which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar. " 00:02:19.07\00:02:20.97 I'm going to read on after a little bit but I'm going to 00:02:21.00\00:02:24.44 key in on this verse 21 where he talks about being under 00:02:24.47\00:02:27.68 the law Jim, and this is something I said in our last 00:02:27.71\00:02:30.85 episode that we were going to talk about 00:02:30.88\00:02:32.55 in a future episode. 00:02:32.58\00:02:33.92 There are people that get confused on this term under the 00:02:33.95\00:02:37.79 law and they assume initially that under the law means 00:02:37.82\00:02:41.69 - that you had to keep the law. 00:02:41.72\00:02:43.63 - Yes, That you have to keep the law so when Paul talks 00:02:43.66\00:02:46.59 about in a derogatory way about being under the law people 00:02:46.63\00:02:49.50 say he is against keeping the law. 00:02:49.53\00:02:51.00 In fact the most common text that is read that way is in 00:02:51.03\00:02:56.04 the book of Romans and we will go to Romans 6:14. 00:02:56.07\00:03:03.68 It says, "for sin shall not have dominion over you, 00:03:03.71\00:03:09.45 "for you are not under the law but under grace. " 00:03:09.48\00:03:15.12 So that's where people read in it that you are not under 00:03:15.19\00:03:18.89 law but you are under grace. 00:03:18.96\00:03:20.76 So they read into that to observe the law of God, 00:03:20.80\00:03:28.24 the Ten Commandments is contrary to grace. 00:03:28.27\00:03:30.44 If you're saved by grace then you don't need to keep 00:03:30.47\00:03:32.74 the law, right? - that's right but if you read what 00:03:32.81\00:03:34.94 he says here in this verse, notice what he says, 00:03:35.01\00:03:37.11 "sin shall not have dominion over you. " 00:03:37.15\00:03:39.88 Let's talk about sin first of all. 1 John 3:4 says, 00:03:39.91\00:03:42.42 "is transgression of the law. " Or lawlessness. 00:03:42.45\00:03:45.15 So right away, in fact the apostle Paul in Romans 7 00:03:45.19\00:03:48.22 says, "I would not have known sin except by the law. " 00:03:48.26\00:03:51.99 Romans 3:20, "by the law is the knowledge of sin. " 00:03:52.03\00:03:55.16 Romans 4:15, "where there is no law there is no 00:03:55.20\00:03:58.33 "transgression. " Or no sin. 00:03:58.37\00:04:00.24 So the whole idea is that sin is breaking the law. 00:04:00.27\00:04:02.60 We know we are sinning when we are breaking the law 00:04:02.64\00:04:04.94 of God, that's the indicator of what sin is. 00:04:04.97\00:04:08.01 Now he says sin, or law breaking shall not have 00:04:08.04\00:04:11.28 dominion over you. Now what does dominion mean? 00:04:11.31\00:04:14.52 - it means ruling over you. - rulership. 00:04:14.55\00:04:17.19 That is rulership, where a man who is under the 00:04:17.22\00:04:19.99 dominion of another we call a slave don't we? 00:04:20.02\00:04:22.86 And this would be a slave to sin because sin is 00:04:22.89\00:04:25.16 the owner, sin is the one who has dominion. 00:04:25.19\00:04:28.20 He says here that sin will not rule over you 00:04:28.23\00:04:31.83 because you are not under law but under grace. 00:04:31.87\00:04:35.07 If we just read it now as we define the terms, 00:04:35.10\00:04:37.91 lawbreaking won't rule your life anymore when 00:04:37.94\00:04:40.74 you are under grace. - that's right. 00:04:40.78\00:04:42.41 - That is what he is saying because grace brings 00:04:42.44\00:04:45.48 us into a position where because of the grace of Christ 00:04:45.55\00:04:48.48 we are brought into obedience to the will of God. 00:04:48.52\00:04:50.95 If you look at that next verse it makes a really plain. 00:04:50.99\00:04:54.19 Romans 7:15, "What then? Shall we say in because we 00:04:54.22\00:04:57.36 "are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!" 00:04:57.39\00:05:00.53 I love the King James on that. 00:05:00.56\00:05:01.86 God forbid that you would think something like that. 00:05:01.90\00:05:05.20 So the whole idea of being under law then is being in 00:05:05.23\00:05:08.80 a position of seeking justification by law. 00:05:08.84\00:05:11.94 That is why Paul says to these Galatians, you who seek 00:05:11.97\00:05:15.04 to be under the law, this is what the people in Galatians 00:05:15.08\00:05:18.08 were doing rather than receiving Christ, they chose 00:05:18.11\00:05:21.08 circumcision and thought it they observed this rite 00:05:21.12\00:05:24.42 it would enter them into that salvation experience. 00:05:24.45\00:05:27.69 He says listen don't you who desired to be under the law, 00:05:27.72\00:05:31.23 you guys were trying to be justified by your observance 00:05:31.26\00:05:34.73 of the law, don't you hear what the law says? 00:05:34.73\00:05:37.17 Don't you understand of the law is asking you to do far 00:05:37.23\00:05:39.87 more then you are capable of doing in your own strength? 00:05:39.90\00:05:42.50 That is the kind of point he makes. 00:05:42.54\00:05:43.94 Exactly right, if you look in that passage there is a 00:05:43.97\00:05:47.68 reference made that really highlights what our topic 00:05:47.71\00:05:51.28 is today, we are talking about the two covenants. 00:05:51.31\00:05:54.82 If you look at Galatians 4:23 it says, "but he who was 00:05:54.85\00:06:01.26 "up a bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he 00:06:01.29\00:06:05.56 "of the free woman through promise, which things are 00:06:05.59\00:06:09.83 "symbolic. For these are the two covenants:" 00:06:09.86\00:06:13.60 so he's about to do this illustration of the two 00:06:13.64\00:06:17.64 covenants, so before we can really understand this 00:06:17.67\00:06:20.61 illustration we need to get a little background 00:06:20.64\00:06:23.55 on the two covenants. 00:06:23.58\00:06:24.91 So let's look at those, we are going to start by going 00:06:24.95\00:06:27.32 back to the Old Testament and taking a look at what is 00:06:27.35\00:06:29.72 commonly referred to as the old covenant. 00:06:29.75\00:06:31.59 Now I would like to look at a verse that is commonly used 00:06:31.62\00:06:33.76 on this in Deuteronomy chapter 4 to start. 00:06:33.79\00:06:37.09 Deuteronomy 4:13 is speaking about the experience of the 00:06:37.13\00:06:42.63 Israelites and God meeting them on Mount Sinai and says, 00:06:42.66\00:06:48.17 "so He declare to you His covenant which He commanded 00:06:48.20\00:06:52.27 "you to perform, the Ten Commandments; and He wrote them 00:06:52.31\00:06:56.34 "on two tablets of stone. " 00:06:56.38\00:06:58.01 Now a covenant is simply an agreement, it's a contractual 00:06:58.05\00:07:02.92 agreement you have with someone. 00:07:02.95\00:07:04.72 So the Ten Commandments were the terms but the covenant 00:07:04.79\00:07:09.16 had to requirement an agreement between these two parties. 00:07:09.22\00:07:12.83 So we see that played out when the Ten Commandments are 00:07:12.86\00:07:16.43 given in Exodus 20 so let's go to Exodus but we will 00:07:16.46\00:07:20.04 go just before that to Exodus 19. 00:07:20.07\00:07:24.81 Let's start in verse 3 and it says, "and Moses went up 00:07:27.08\00:07:32.08 "to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, 00:07:32.11\00:07:35.68 "saying, 'Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and 00:07:35.72\00:07:39.02 "tell the children of Israel: you have seen what I did to 00:07:39.05\00:07:42.16 the Egyptians, and how I bore you on Eagles wings and 00:07:42.19\00:07:45.59 "brought you to Myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed 00:07:45.63\00:07:48.96 "obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a 00:07:49.00\00:07:52.03 "special treasure to Me above all people, for all of the 00:07:52.07\00:07:55.24 "earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests 00:07:55.27\00:07:58.51 "and a holy nation. These are the words which you shall 00:07:58.54\00:08:01.58 "speak to the children of Israel. 7. So Moses came and 00:08:01.61\00:08:04.11 "called for the elders of the people, and laid before 00:08:04.15\00:08:07.52 "them all these words which the Lord commanded him. 00:08:07.55\00:08:10.85 "Then all the people answered together and said, 'All that 00:08:10.89\00:08:14.49 "the Lord has spoken we will do. '" 00:08:14.56\00:08:16.69 Now in and of itself that wasn't a bad thing. 00:08:16.73\00:08:19.26 I would hope that all of us would respond to the Lord 00:08:19.29\00:08:21.53 when He asks us to do something we would say all that the 00:08:21.56\00:08:23.83 Lord has said we will do. 00:08:23.87\00:08:25.20 The problem comes in that after God appears on Sinai, 00:08:25.23\00:08:28.77 we see in Chapter 20:18 their reaction. 00:08:28.80\00:08:34.04 It says, "now all the people witnessed the thunderings, 00:08:34.08\00:08:37.05 "the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the 00:08:37.08\00:08:40.05 "mountain smoking, and when the people saw it, 00:08:40.08\00:08:42.28 "they trembled and stood afar off. 19. Then they said 00:08:42.32\00:08:46.49 "Moses, 'you speak with us, and we will hear; but let not 00:08:46.55\00:08:50.49 "'God speak with us, lest we die. ' 20. And Moses said 00:08:50.53\00:08:53.46 "to the people, 'do not fear: for God has come to test 00:08:53.50\00:08:56.16 "you, and that His fear may be before you, so that 00:08:56.20\00:08:59.20 "you may not sin. So the people stood afar off, 00:08:59.23\00:09:02.24 "but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was. " 00:09:02.27\00:09:06.68 Now this is a powerful passage and it helps us to 00:09:06.71\00:09:09.48 understand that the children of Israel had made a 00:09:09.51\00:09:12.21 commitment, they had agreed to the terms of the covenant. 00:09:12.25\00:09:16.38 To obey all that God had said, the only problem was they 00:09:16.42\00:09:20.56 wanted to do it standing afar off. 00:09:20.59\00:09:23.36 They didn't want, as Moses did, to draw near to God. 00:09:23.39\00:09:26.80 Rather they thought you tell me what to do and I'll do it. 00:09:26.83\00:09:30.70 Because of that, what was that they didn't recognize? 00:09:30.73\00:09:33.67 They didn't recognize their need they didn't recognize they 00:09:33.74\00:09:37.17 were not capable of doing what God was asking without God. 00:09:37.21\00:09:40.61 - yeah they thought their need was a list, a list of 00:09:40.64\00:09:43.68 requirements, you tell us and I will do those 00:09:43.71\00:09:45.91 requirements, that will be salvation to me. 00:09:45.98\00:09:49.18 This is what we refer to as the old covenant. 00:09:49.22\00:09:52.35 Now we find the new covenant expressed in a couple 00:09:52.42\00:09:55.32 different places, but perhaps one of the best is in 00:09:55.39\00:09:57.83 Hebrews 8. - that's right we are going to go to 00:09:57.89\00:10:00.26 Hebrews 8 and incidentally it is interesting the term in 00:10:00.30\00:10:04.00 the authorized version, the King James version or the 00:10:04.03\00:10:07.70 New King James Version, the term new covenant only appears 00:10:07.74\00:10:11.57 twice in Scripture, like I said the authorized version 00:10:11.61\00:10:14.61 and I think I looked up the New International Version 00:10:14.64\00:10:17.61 and it was five times. 00:10:17.65\00:10:18.98 One of them was when Jesus gave the cup of the 00:10:19.01\00:10:21.35 New Testament with His blood, some versions say testament. 00:10:21.38\00:10:23.52 But the terms new covenant in the description of the 00:10:23.55\00:10:26.76 giving of the new covenant is found in two places. 00:10:26.82\00:10:29.96 One is in Hebrews 8 and the other is the place where Paul 00:10:29.99\00:10:36.36 is quoting from in Jeremiah 31. 00:10:36.40\00:10:40.24 So it is interesting that Paul, when he speaks of the new 00:10:40.27\00:10:43.20 covenant is simply quoting from the Old Testament. 00:10:43.24\00:10:46.11 So we find the new covenant in the Old Testament. 00:10:46.14\00:10:48.98 So in Hebrews 8:6 the Bible says of Jesus, "but now He 00:10:49.01\00:10:54.12 "has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He 00:10:54.15\00:10:58.39 "is also a Mediator of a better covenant, which was 00:10:58.45\00:11:02.56 "established on better promises. 7. For if that first 00:11:02.59\00:11:07.00 "covenant had been faultless, then no place would have 00:11:07.03\00:11:11.40 "been sought for a second. " That's common sensible, 00:11:11.43\00:11:14.00 if there were snow problem with the first one we wouldn't 00:11:14.04\00:11:16.00 had the second one, but there was a problem with that old 00:11:16.04\00:11:17.94 covenant, What was the problem? We want to find out. 00:11:17.97\00:11:21.68 8. "Because finding fault with - them," - the law? 00:11:21.71\00:11:25.41 - it's not what it says. 00:11:25.45\00:11:26.78 - it's not what it says it all is it? 00:11:26.82\00:11:28.15 "Because finding fault with them, He says; behold, the 00:11:28.18\00:11:30.52 "days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new 00:11:30.55\00:11:32.92 "covenant with, notice! The house of Israel" 00:11:32.95\00:11:36.62 "and with the house of Judah. " 00:11:36.66\00:11:38.03 A lot of Christians don't realize we do not find any 00:11:38.06\00:11:41.16 covenant in Scripture made with the Gentiles, it was always 00:11:41.20\00:11:44.97 made which Israel and we have talked about that. 00:11:45.33\00:11:46.87 In order to be a partaker of that covenant you had to 00:11:46.94\00:11:49.64 become part of the Seed of Abraham. 00:11:49.70\00:11:51.17 that's right a lot of people look at the Ten Commandments 00:11:51.21\00:11:53.84 and say, that was just for the Jews because it talks about 00:11:53.88\00:11:56.48 how He rescued them out of the house of bondage. 00:11:56.54\00:11:59.91 So they say that was just for the Jews. 00:11:59.95\00:12:01.55 If you look those same Christians believe that the new 00:12:01.58\00:12:04.75 covenant is their way of life. 00:12:04.79\00:12:07.22 It is also given to the Jews. - that's exactly right. 00:12:07.26\00:12:10.89 Incidentally if we continue on here he says, 00:12:10.93\00:12:13.60 "9. Not according to the covenant that I made with 00:12:13.63\00:12:16.10 "their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand 00:12:16.13\00:12:18.53 "to lead them out of the land of Egypt," that is what 00:12:18.57\00:12:20.94 we were just reading from. Notice! "Because they 00:12:20.97\00:12:23.87 "did not continue in My covenant," remember the fault 00:12:23.91\00:12:28.11 was in the people. 00:12:28.14\00:12:29.48 "And I disregarded them, says the Lord. " 00:12:29.51\00:12:31.08 Now notice verse 10, "for this is the covenant that I 00:12:31.11\00:12:33.58 "will make with the house of Israel after those days, 00:12:33.62\00:12:37.05 "says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and 00:12:37.09\00:12:40.16 "write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, 00:12:40.19\00:12:43.26 "and they shall be My people. " 00:12:43.29\00:12:44.86 So the whole idea is that God was going to make a 00:12:44.89\00:12:48.33 covenant with His people and He was going to now not 00:12:48.36\00:12:51.60 give them the law on tables of stone where they could 00:12:51.63\00:12:54.84 look at the list and say we'll do that list. 00:12:54.87\00:12:56.97 He said I'm going to make it internal, I will write 00:12:57.01\00:12:59.54 that law in your heart so it becomes a part of you. 00:12:59.57\00:13:02.58 This is the difference we find between the old covenant 00:13:02.61\00:13:05.51 and the new covenant. 00:13:05.55\00:13:06.88 One was written on tables of stone, the other is written 00:13:06.92\00:13:09.68 in the heart. One was external and one was internalized. 00:13:09.72\00:13:13.05 That's right, and in these two cases you have one where 00:13:13.12\00:13:16.42 the people are making special promises to God, and the 00:13:16.46\00:13:19.39 other where God is making special promises to His people. 00:13:19.43\00:13:22.33 This next part really strikes me to where it says, 00:13:22.36\00:13:24.67 "11. None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none 00:13:24.70\00:13:27.44 "his brother... saying, 'Know the Lord', for all shall 00:13:27.47\00:13:31.01 "know Me. " The idea here is with the new covenant when 00:13:31.04\00:13:34.34 the Spirit enters the heart, no longer do you have to 00:13:34.38\00:13:38.41 urge people, you may have to tell someone come on wake 00:13:38.45\00:13:42.45 up its time for church, we have to go to church. 00:13:42.48\00:13:44.42 We have to go to Sabbath school. 00:13:44.45\00:13:45.95 You will not have to drag people into religious 00:13:46.02\00:13:48.32 experiences because the new covenant places the desire 00:13:48.36\00:13:51.23 and hunger for those spiritual experiences into the heart. 00:13:51.26\00:13:54.03 - that's right. Amen, we have more to say about the 00:13:54.10\00:13:56.60 book of Galatians, but before we do we are going to go 00:13:56.63\00:13:59.10 to a break right now. 00:13:59.13\00:14:00.54 We'll see you in just a few moments. 00:14:00.57\00:14:01.90
