Welcome to Books of the Book, I'm Pastor Mark Howard and 00:00:22.25\00:00:24.99 the director of the Emmanuel Institute of Evangelism for 00:00:25.02\00:00:27.62 Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventist a training 00:00:27.66\00:00:30.23 school to train people how to share their faith, 00:00:30.26\00:00:32.96 as well as the Pastor of the Gobels Seventh-day Adventist 00:00:32.99\00:00:35.40 church in Gobels Michigan. 00:00:35.43\00:00:37.10 I'm here with my co-host, my brother Jim. 00:00:37.13\00:00:39.67 Yes my name is Jim Howard and I am also a Pastor in 00:00:39.70\00:00:42.80 Michigan Conference of the Detroit Metropolitan and South 00:00:42.84\00:00:45.97 Lyon Seventh-day Adventist church and I'm excited to 00:00:46.01\00:00:48.64 study the book of Galatians with you today. 00:00:48.68\00:00:50.38 Today we are, as Jim has mentioned, we have been studying 00:00:50.41\00:00:55.02 the book of Galatians. 00:00:55.05\00:00:56.38 In our last study together we were talking about the Seed 00:00:56.42\00:01:01.49 of Abraham and what it means to understand and receive 00:01:01.52\00:01:05.59 the Seed of Abraham, actually to become sons of God. 00:01:05.63\00:01:09.60 That was the point that Paul was getting to. 00:01:09.63\00:01:13.20 We are going to pick up on that today. 00:01:13.23\00:01:15.67 I want to tell you today of all the topics Jim in the 00:01:15.70\00:01:19.97 book of Galatians, this is one of the most precious as it 00:01:20.01\00:01:24.21 really brings out the heart of our own spiritual 00:01:24.28\00:01:28.22 experience and the affection of not only God, 00:01:28.25\00:01:32.15 for us but us for God. 00:01:32.22\00:01:33.79 We're talking about being slaves or sons today. 00:01:33.82\00:01:37.86 So what we are going to do is begin in Chapter 4, 00:01:37.89\00:01:41.66 but we are going to recap in Chapter 3 of Galatians. 00:01:41.70\00:01:44.53 If you have your Bibles with you I would encourage you 00:01:44.57\00:01:47.34 to turn with us, we are in the book of Galatians. 00:01:47.37\00:01:49.54 You go to the New Testament Scriptures Matthew, Mark, 00:01:49.57\00:01:51.67 Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 00:01:51.71\00:01:53.27 1 and 2 Corinthians and then the book of Galatians. 00:01:53.31\00:01:57.05 In Galatians were going to Chapter 3:26 and the apostle 00:01:57.08\00:02:02.15 writes, "for you are all sons of God through faith in 00:02:02.18\00:02:06.76 "Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized 00:02:06.79\00:02:10.79 "into Christ have put on Christ. And there is neither 00:02:10.83\00:02:14.76 "Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, 00:02:14.83\00:02:17.63 "there is neither male nor female; for you are all 00:02:17.67\00:02:21.30 "one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then 00:02:21.34\00:02:24.94 "you are Abraham's seed, 00:02:24.97\00:02:26.71 "and heirs according to the promise. " 00:02:26.74\00:02:28.88 The idea here is Paul talking about how we can become 00:02:28.91\00:02:32.81 sons of God through faith in Jesus. 00:02:32.85\00:02:36.05 There is a lot to the sons of God that can really 00:02:36.08\00:02:39.59 make a world of difference, the world of difference, 00:02:39.62\00:02:42.49 in our own spiritual experience and I think that is 00:02:42.52\00:02:45.39 where we are going to go here. 00:02:45.43\00:02:46.76 Yes that is exactly right. 00:02:46.80\00:02:48.10 Right after this passage, and the news and we need 00:02:48.13\00:02:50.53 to review this is because after the end of chapter 3 00:02:50.60\00:02:53.03 the apostle uses an illustration to talk about 00:02:53.07\00:02:56.17 the importance of being sons. 00:02:56.20\00:02:58.01 So what we are wanting to do is to keep reading. 00:02:58.04\00:03:01.01 Let's read verses 1-7 together and that will be the 00:03:01.04\00:03:03.95 framework from which we will study today. 00:03:03.98\00:03:06.21 Verse one says, "Now I say that the heir, as long 00:03:06.25\00:03:10.25 "as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, 00:03:10.29\00:03:13.12 "though he is master of all, but he is under 00:03:13.15\00:03:16.12 "guardians and stewards until the time appointed 00:03:16.16\00:03:19.26 "by the father. Even so we, when we were children, 00:03:19.29\00:03:22.23 "were in bondage under the elements of the world. 00:03:22.26\00:03:25.43 "But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent 00:03:25.47\00:03:28.74 "forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 00:03:28.77\00:03:31.94 "to redeem those who were under the law, that we might 00:03:31.97\00:03:35.41 "receive the adoption as sons. And because you are 00:03:35.48\00:03:38.98 "sons, God has set forth the Spirit of His Son into 00:03:39.05\00:03:43.18 "your hearts, crying out, 'Abba Father!' Therefore you 00:03:43.22\00:03:47.56 "are no longer slave but a son, and if a son, then an 00:03:47.59\00:03:51.86 "heir of God through Christ. " 00:03:51.93\00:03:54.10 Now this is a powerful passage of Scripture and he is 00:03:54.13\00:03:57.73 contrasting hear Mark, the idea of a slave with a son. 00:03:57.77\00:04:00.64 He is trying to tell the Galatians you want to be sons, 00:04:00.70\00:04:03.47 and it is not just a suggestion. 00:04:03.51\00:04:06.44 That is something we will draw how right from the start. 00:04:06.47\00:04:08.84 If you look at that last verse 7, it says, 00:04:08.88\00:04:12.05 "therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a 00:04:12.08\00:04:15.88 "son, then an heir of God through Christ. " 00:04:15.95\00:04:19.29 This seems to be a tradition of being an heir of God 00:04:19.32\00:04:23.22 through Christ. - that's right! 00:04:23.26\00:04:25.03 If we are a slave you are not an heir. 00:04:25.06\00:04:28.93 The only way to become an heir is to be a son so this 00:04:28.96\00:04:33.07 is very critical to understand. 00:04:33.10\00:04:34.47 What is the difference between being a slave and being 00:04:34.50\00:04:36.50 a son? And how is it that we can be a son? 00:04:36.54\00:04:39.77 One aspect of this I just think about how 00:04:39.81\00:04:42.98 meaningful it is, it touches my heart to think about the 00:04:43.01\00:04:47.22 fact that Jesus, when referring to God said we should 00:04:47.25\00:04:51.42 pray our Father who art in heaven. 00:04:51.45\00:04:54.62 I mean when you think about other religions, world 00:04:54.69\00:04:59.06 religions and their deities, you don't see the same 00:04:59.13\00:05:03.47 bond of affection that God is asking us to call Me Father. 00:05:03.53\00:05:07.97 Call Me Father, it denotes that there is more than just a 00:05:08.00\00:05:12.41 servile relationship here, it denotes there is an 00:05:12.44\00:05:15.81 affection here, there is a bond, a union and God is 00:05:15.84\00:05:18.81 calling us to that union in this passage of Galatians. 00:05:18.85\00:05:22.15 Absolutely, we are going to unpack this, these 7 verses 00:05:22.18\00:05:25.45 are so full of instruction. 00:05:25.49\00:05:28.06 I want to go back to verse 1 and look at the first few 00:05:28.09\00:05:31.59 verses here, Paul is making a point of what happens 00:05:31.66\00:05:35.06 in the growth of the Christian so let's start in verse 1 00:05:35.10\00:05:37.57 and then I'll comment. 00:05:37.60\00:05:39.30 " Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, 00:05:39.33\00:05:42.50 "does not differ at all from a slave, 00:05:42.54\00:05:44.84 "though he is master of all 00:05:44.87\00:05:46.57 "though he is master of all," so here you have a son, 00:05:46.61\00:05:48.78 but he is in the same relation as a servant would be. 00:05:48.81\00:05:51.31 Paul is going to talk about what that means as we go 00:05:51.35\00:05:54.35 to verse 2 where he says, "does not differ at all from 00:05:54.38\00:05:56.99 "a slave, even though he is master of all," because he is 00:05:57.02\00:06:00.19 heir of what his father owns, "but he is under guardians 00:06:00.22\00:06:03.83 "and stewards until the time appointed by the father. " 00:06:03.86\00:06:08.56 And then he says in verse 3, "Even so we, 00:06:08.60\00:06:13.20 so he compares us, our experience from slave to son. 00:06:13.23\00:06:17.87 He compares us to this child who is under guardians and 00:06:17.91\00:06:21.71 stewards and says, "Even so we, when we were children, 00:06:21.74\00:06:25.61 "were in bondage under the elements of the world. " 00:06:25.68\00:06:29.52 - what's that talking about? 00:06:29.58\00:06:30.99 And these elements of the world, it's beneficial to 00:06:31.02\00:06:34.36 us as the apostle Paul uses the exact same language 00:06:34.39\00:06:38.13 in the book of Colossians so if we go forward past 00:06:38.16\00:06:41.36 the book of Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians and 00:06:41.40\00:06:46.67 Colossians 2:20 we are going to see a similar 00:06:46.70\00:06:50.57 illustration that will help us to grasp what he 00:06:50.61\00:06:54.44 is pointing out. 00:06:54.48\00:06:56.18 Colossians 2:20, notice what Paul says here. 00:06:56.21\00:06:59.48 "Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic 00:06:59.51\00:07:03.62 "principles of the world," now I know in Galatians it said 00:07:03.65\00:07:07.02 elements, but in the Greek language these are the exact 00:07:07.06\00:07:10.39 same terms that are a being used here. 00:07:10.43\00:07:12.86 Some Bibles will even say rudiments. 00:07:12.89\00:07:15.23 A rudiment in the Greek are talking about the very basic 00:07:15.26\00:07:18.67 building blocks of learning, your ABCs if you will. 00:07:18.70\00:07:22.27 So basic principles of the world he says. 00:07:22.30\00:07:27.68 Let's start in verse 20 again, "therefore, if you died 00:07:27.71\00:07:30.55 "with Christ from the basic principles of the world, 00:07:30.58\00:07:33.11 "why, as though living in the world, do you subject 00:07:33.15\00:07:35.62 "yourselves to regulations - Do not touch, do not taste, 00:07:35.68\00:07:39.62 "do not handle, which all concerns things which perish 00:07:39.65\00:07:43.56 "with the using-according to the Commandments and 00:07:43.59\00:07:46.29 "the doctrines of men?" 00:07:46.33\00:07:48.06 Now you know Paul is talking about how when we are 00:07:48.10\00:07:50.97 children in Galatians and were under these elements of 00:07:51.00\00:07:53.80 the world until the time appointed by the Father. 00:07:53.84\00:07:56.71 What some people have done unfortunately, not grasping 00:07:56.77\00:07:59.84 what he is trying to say is that they have read into 00:07:59.87\00:08:02.78 this and said all oh yeah, do not taste or touch but what Paul 00:08:02.81\00:08:05.48 is saying that when you come to Christ you shouldn't 00:08:05.51\00:08:08.58 have any regulations, you don't need to obey God's 00:08:08.62\00:08:12.15 commands anymore, you are led by the Spirit as if the 00:08:12.19\00:08:15.66 two would be conflicting or contrary. 00:08:15.69\00:08:17.83 What he is trying to say, let's take a practical example. 00:08:17.86\00:08:20.90 I have children Jim, you have two children and I have two 00:08:20.93\00:08:24.80 children and when our children, you viewers at home, some 00:08:24.83\00:08:27.90 of you have children, or you are children and what a child 00:08:27.94\00:08:30.91 is under his parents, but parent as that child is growing 00:08:30.97\00:08:33.91 up makes certain regulations. 00:08:33.94\00:08:35.58 Do not taste, do not touch, right? Don't touch that! 00:08:35.61\00:08:39.58 Don't eat that! Right? The basic elements when you are 00:08:39.61\00:08:42.92 growing up you have certain restrictions and regulations. 00:08:42.95\00:08:45.89 For example, this one is probably fairly common for a 00:08:45.92\00:08:48.89 parent is I don't want you playing out in busy traffic. 00:08:48.92\00:08:52.59 That is pretty easy and a no-brainer to a parent, however; 00:08:52.66\00:08:56.26 I know with my children and maybe with your children, 00:08:56.30\00:08:57.70 sometimes the children say, but why? 00:08:57.73\00:09:00.57 Why can't I go out and play in the road? 00:09:00.60\00:09:02.87 They don't understand what I understand. 00:09:02.94\00:09:05.14 They don't understand the danger we as parents understand. 00:09:05.17\00:09:07.58 So we make these restrictions and regulations. 00:09:07.61\00:09:11.38 Now here's the question, is that for the purpose of my 00:09:11.45\00:09:15.98 regulation don't play in the traffic, but why my child 00:09:16.02\00:09:20.72 becomes of age, my son turns 18 I can say hey content 00:09:20.76\00:09:25.43 yourself, play in busy traffic all you want. 00:09:25.46\00:09:27.00 Go get hit by a car for all I care. 00:09:27.03\00:09:28.73 Is that the idea? No! The reality is what I am hoping 00:09:28.76\00:09:32.80 for is that those basic principles that I lay out as a 00:09:32.83\00:09:37.81 parent will become a part of his reasoning process so when 00:09:37.84\00:09:42.04 the child matures, instead of having to be told what to 00:09:42.08\00:09:45.88 do all the time, it will be in his heart what to do. 00:09:45.91\00:09:49.35 And this is what the Bible is trying to express here 00:09:49.38\00:09:52.79 with these basic elements of the world. 00:09:52.82\00:09:55.49 One other thing I want to see there and Colossians 2 00:09:55.52\00:09:58.66 he says in verse 21 again, " Do not touch, do not taste, 00:09:58.69\00:10:01.20 "do not handle, which all concerns things which perish 00:10:01.23\00:10:03.73 "with the using-according to the Commandments 00:10:03.77\00:10:05.90 and "doctrines of men?" 00:10:05.93\00:10:07.40 And then in verse 23 he says, "these things indeed have 00:10:07.44\00:10:11.01 "an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false 00:10:11.04\00:10:14.58 "humility, and neglect of the body," 00:10:14.61\00:10:17.68 Now he is talking about those things in the spiritual life 00:10:17.71\00:10:21.15 having using certain outward and regulations. 00:10:21.18\00:10:24.95 It is not outward religion and we will talk about that. 00:10:24.99\00:10:26.65 Outward religion is part of inward religion, 00:10:26.69\00:10:28.66 but there are those who can have outward religion 00:10:28.69\00:10:30.73 with no inward religion. 00:10:30.76\00:10:32.16 And here he says, they have an appearance of wisdom, 00:10:32.19\00:10:37.00 but he says, "but are of no value against the 00:10:37.07\00:10:41.77 "indulgence of the flesh. " 00:10:41.80\00:10:43.64 So here Paul is saying, I don't have an issue with outward 00:10:43.67\00:10:46.61 regulations, but problem is that your outward regulations 00:10:46.64\00:10:49.54 are not addressing the real issue. 00:10:49.58\00:10:51.68 That is your heart is uncir- cumcised and you are carnal. 00:10:51.71\00:10:54.28 That's right, you can't just do things because someone is 00:10:54.32\00:10:57.19 telling you to do them, you are going to have to embody 00:10:57.22\00:10:59.75 it yourself. - that's right and we have seen it and I 00:10:59.79\00:11:02.39 have done it, I'm a child who my parents try to raise 00:11:02.42\00:11:04.96 right, and what happened I grew up. 00:11:04.99\00:11:07.86 I had those principles growing up, but what did I do when 00:11:07.93\00:11:10.70 I got older? I said I don't think it's important that I 00:11:10.73\00:11:13.50 do those things and it wasn't in my heart to do them. 00:11:13.54\00:11:16.27 I went against what my parents had taught me to do. 00:11:16.30\00:11:18.97 Exactly, exactly and you know. - and that's what's going 00:11:19.01\00:11:22.01 to happen when it's not in your heart. 00:11:22.04\00:11:23.38 Umm Hmmm and back in Galatians 4 there is another passage 00:11:23.41\00:11:26.21 that touches on this idea of the elements of the world. 00:11:26.28\00:11:29.42 I thought maybe we can look at that too. 00:11:29.45\00:11:30.89 Galatians 4:8 it says, "but then, indeed, when you did 00:11:30.92\00:11:36.26 "not know God," so he is talking to these Gentiles 00:11:36.29\00:11:41.53 believers, there was a time when they didn't know God and 00:11:41.56\00:11:44.33 "served those which by nature are not gods. " 00:11:44.37\00:11:46.63 They were into idolatry, pagan religion. 00:11:46.67\00:11:48.84 vs. 9. "But now after you have known God, or rather are known 00:11:48.87\00:11:52.51 "by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and 00:11:52.54\00:11:55.41 "beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in 00:11:55.44\00:11:58.48 "bondage? You observe days and months and seasons and 00:11:58.51\00:12:01.55 "years. I am afraid for you, 00:12:01.58\00:12:03.59 "lest I have labored for you in vain. " 00:12:03.62\00:12:06.05 Now to think about this idea of serving other gods, these 00:12:06.09\00:12:11.53 Gentile believers at one time believed in gods that were 00:12:11.56\00:12:18.07 idols of wood and stone and planets or whatever else. 00:12:18.10\00:12:24.11 The Sun, so when they thought about serving God it was 00:12:24.14\00:12:30.11 all from a servile relationship. 00:12:30.15\00:12:32.78 They had a fear over war relationship with God. 00:12:32.81\00:12:36.35 They did things out of fear, or they do things only for 00:12:36.42\00:12:38.92 the reward that will come from serving. 00:12:38.95\00:12:41.12 So what they did and everything they did as a way of 00:12:41.16\00:12:43.43 appeasing god, nothing in the heart, no affection for their 00:12:43.46\00:12:49.13 god they just had to do with their god had to say, 00:12:49.16\00:12:51.40 or what their god told them to do. 00:12:51.47\00:12:55.20 So what he is saying here is do you want to go back to 00:12:55.24\00:12:58.21 that? Do you want to go back to a servile relationship. 00:12:58.24\00:13:01.24 The apostle Paul is not here against the idea of 00:13:01.28\00:13:04.25 observing things, like you were saying a moment ago. 00:13:04.28\00:13:07.68 But the idea of observing things whether it is days or 00:13:07.75\00:13:11.15 months or seasons or years or anything else as a 00:13:11.19\00:13:13.92 replacement for a genuine heart religion with Christ and 00:13:13.96\00:13:18.59 with God, so some people try to say this is saying that 00:13:18.63\00:13:23.20 the Sabbath is unimportant. 00:13:23.23\00:13:24.77 I don't think that is the case. 00:13:24.80\00:13:26.23 Well that's not even in the context of all. 00:13:26.27\00:13:29.07 The apostle Paul no problem with the observances 00:13:29.10\00:13:32.37 because he observe the Sabbath and we today observe the 00:13:32.41\00:13:35.78 communion, we observe baptism we have of observances and 00:13:35.81\00:13:39.15 there's nothing wrong with observances. 00:13:39.18\00:13:40.75 Yep we get focused on the observances in this passage we 00:13:40.78\00:13:43.65 are missing his point. 00:13:43.69\00:13:45.02 That's right, and it will take us away from the 00:13:45.05\00:13:47.22 understanding that a servile relationship is what the 00:13:47.26\00:13:49.56 apostle Paul was speaking against. 00:13:49.59\00:13:51.13 We need to dig into this a little bit deeper, 00:13:51.16\00:13:53.13 but before we do we have to take a break. 00:13:53.16\00:13:55.96 So right now take a couple minutes and 00:13:56.00\00:13:58.80 we will be right back with you. 00:13:58.87\00:14:00.27
