Welcome back to Books of the Book we have been studying 00:00:06.10\00:00:08.10 the book of Galatians and we are talking today about 00:00:08.14\00:00:11.11 the Seed of Abraham and we left off at the break 00:00:11.14\00:00:14.04 talking about the Seed not being Isaac but being Christ. 00:00:14.08\00:00:17.85 Jim I think we were going to pick up right there. 00:00:17.88\00:00:21.55 Yes, verse 16 of Galatians 3 we read where it says, 00:00:21.58\00:00:24.89 "now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. 00:00:24.92\00:00:28.22 "He does not say, And to seeds, as of many, 00:00:28.26\00:00:30.76 "but as of one, 'And to your Seed', who is Christ. " 00:00:30.79\00:00:34.73 We made the point that the Seed is not Isaac, the Seed 00:00:34.73\00:00:38.77 it's not the lineage, the Jewish heritage as it were. 00:00:38.80\00:00:42.57 The Seed is not that which circumcision brings you into 00:00:42.60\00:00:46.31 connection with, but rather the Seed is Christ. 00:00:46.34\00:00:48.94 They were connected to Isaac, but if they weren't connected 00:00:48.98\00:00:52.11 to Christ they weren't going to be recipients of the promise. 00:00:52.15\00:00:55.95 This verse right here, if you look in your Bible there is 00:00:55.98\00:00:59.45 quotations around it because he is actually quoting from 00:00:59.49\00:01:03.02 the book of Genesis. 00:01:03.06\00:01:04.66 That's right and I think it is important for us to note 00:01:04.69\00:01:08.83 we miss a lot when we fail to realize or we forget that 00:01:08.86\00:01:13.00 all of the New Testament writers taught 00:01:13.07\00:01:15.54 from the Old Testament. 00:01:15.57\00:01:17.84 They preach the gospel from the Old Testament. 00:01:17.91\00:01:20.11 The Bible Jesus used was the Old Testament Scriptures. 00:01:20.14\00:01:23.38 Sometimes people get the idea that the Old Testament is 00:01:23.41\00:01:26.48 not gospel centered, we only stick with the New Testament. 00:01:26.51\00:01:29.98 But Jesus Himself told the disciples on the road to Emmaus 00:01:30.05\00:01:33.49 who didn't basically receive all that the prophets 00:01:33.52\00:01:37.36 had wrote or spoken. 00:01:37.39\00:01:39.26 He said you fools and slow of heart to believe all that 00:01:39.29\00:01:42.03 the prophets have spoken. 00:01:42.06\00:01:43.60 So Jesus said your foolish if you are not taking in what's 00:01:43.63\00:01:47.10 written in the Old Testament because that is the 00:01:47.14\00:01:49.07 foundation, that gives you the background of a lot of what 00:01:49.10\00:01:52.51 is being taught in the New Testament. 00:01:52.54\00:01:54.54 The apostle Paul well understood the Old Testament Scriptures. 00:01:54.58\00:01:56.88 That is what he was using so when he is writing and 00:01:56.91\00:02:01.05 quoting it is important for us to go back and find out 00:02:01.08\00:02:05.15 what the setting was, what the message was, 00:02:05.19\00:02:08.79 what the story was that he was quoting from and it will 00:02:08.82\00:02:12.26 fill out the picture for us and give us the real context 00:02:12.29\00:02:15.66 of what is being communicated. 00:02:15.70\00:02:17.70 That's right, if you look at this particular situation 00:02:17.73\00:02:20.37 we do learn something very significant by going back 00:02:20.40\00:02:22.97 to where he is quoting from. 00:02:23.00\00:02:24.91 It is in Genesis 22:18 it says, "in your seed" and again 00:02:24.94\00:02:31.28 it is the singular seed and that is what Paul is saying. 00:02:31.31\00:02:36.42 Not seeds but seed, "in your seed all the nations of the 00:02:36.45\00:02:41.49 "earth shall be blessed, because 00:02:41.56\00:02:44.39 you have obeyed My voice. " 00:02:44.43\00:02:47.50 Now I find that fascinating, it says that Abraham 00:02:47.50\00:02:50.87 received this inheritance by promise and we think it's 00:02:50.90\00:02:55.47 the promise of faith and not obedience, not anything 00:02:55.50\00:02:59.34 to do with the law, it is just faith, but yet you go 00:02:59.37\00:03:03.48 back to the exact place where God makes that promise and 00:03:03.51\00:03:07.52 it says the reason I am giving you this promise is 00:03:07.55\00:03:10.02 because you have obeyed My voice. 00:03:10.05\00:03:12.05 It only makes sense because true obedience, the kind that 00:03:12.09\00:03:15.62 has the Spirit of Christ with it is an obedience 00:03:15.66\00:03:19.73 that stems from faith. 00:03:19.76\00:03:21.63 Abraham had that faith that obeyed. 00:03:21.66\00:03:24.20 That's right in so we went through some of this before. 00:03:24.23\00:03:28.20 So we are going to go to Galatians 3:19 and continue on 00:03:28.24\00:03:33.14 where it says, "what purpose then does the law serve? 00:03:33.17\00:03:37.21 "It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed 00:03:37.25\00:03:40.48 "should come to whom the promise was made; and it was 00:03:40.52\00:03:44.39 "appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. " 00:03:44.42\00:03:48.22 So Paul was just making the point here that the purpose 00:03:48.26\00:03:52.03 the law was given was not to cancel out that promise. 00:03:52.06\00:03:55.23 It wasn't contradictory to the promise, it actually was 00:03:55.30\00:03:58.47 working in conjunction with the promise. 00:03:58.50\00:04:00.30 The commandment was to help bring the people to 00:04:00.34\00:04:03.51 a realization of their transgression because they have 00:04:03.54\00:04:06.34 forgotten their true condition and they have forgotten 00:04:06.37\00:04:09.61 their need of the righteousness outside of themselves. 00:04:09.64\00:04:12.35 That's right and it picks up really clearly on that in 00:04:12.38\00:04:14.88 verse 23 and we have already been through these verses. 00:04:14.92\00:04:17.39 It is the foundation for where we are headed. 00:04:17.45\00:04:20.06 In verse 23 it says, "but before faith came, we were 00:04:20.09\00:04:22.92 "kept under guard by the law, For the faith which would 00:04:22.96\00:04:25.99 "afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor 00:04:26.03\00:04:29.03 "to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified 00:04:29.06\00:04:31.93 "by faith. But after faith has come, 00:04:32.00\00:04:35.20 we are no longer under a tutor. " 00:04:35.24\00:04:36.57 So again the law was serving as that tutor that was 00:04:36.60\00:04:40.18 showing us that we were outside the will of God. 00:04:40.21\00:04:43.75 Showing us that being outside of the will of God gave us 00:04:43.78\00:04:46.85 a certain penalty of death and giving us motivation 00:04:46.88\00:04:50.19 to go to Christ to find what we needed. 00:04:50.22\00:04:53.46 That something we needed was through faith the promise 00:04:53.49\00:04:57.73 of the Spirit, we read that in verse 14 of chapter 3. 00:04:57.76\00:05:01.03 You receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. 00:05:01.06\00:05:05.17 So through faith we are born of the Spirit, born-again. 00:05:05.20\00:05:09.00 This is a significant point and what it means is that 00:05:09.04\00:05:12.81 the Spirit of God writes His law on our hearts. 00:05:12.87\00:05:16.21 Then it says no longer do we need a tutor. 00:05:16.24\00:05:19.18 In other words, once the Spirit of God comes in we don't 00:05:19.21\00:05:24.45 need someone to say don't commit adultery. 00:05:24.49\00:05:27.49 We are not going to want to commit adultery. 00:05:27.52\00:05:30.49 - that's right. We don't need to say be sure and keep 00:05:30.53\00:05:34.10 the Sabbath, we're going to desire to do God's will 00:05:34.13\00:05:37.73 and to keep the Sabbath. 00:05:37.77\00:05:39.10 No longer is the wall serving in that purpose. 00:05:39.13\00:05:40.97 We have now come to a point where we agree with God 00:05:41.00\00:05:44.51 and because of that in verse 26 it makes this beautiful 00:05:44.54\00:05:48.18 statement, "for you are all sons of God through faith in 00:05:48.21\00:05:51.81 "Christ Jesus. " We become sons through faith. 00:05:51.85\00:05:55.78 That seed experience of being a part of the family of 00:05:55.82\00:05:58.42 Abraham happens through faith. 00:05:58.49\00:06:01.06 So what we need to grasp about that, that is when we are 00:06:01.09\00:06:03.53 talking about the seed and our viewers may not be grasping 00:06:03.56\00:06:05.96 the terms, some Bibles will say descendents. 00:06:05.99\00:06:08.96 The whole idea is this, the Jewish nation under stood 00:06:09.00\00:06:12.17 that through the descendent of Abraham that it was through 00:06:12.20\00:06:16.27 Abraham that the whole nation would be blessed. 00:06:16.30\00:06:19.14 They understood that blessing was them. 00:06:19.17\00:06:21.18 Anybody who was born through the line of Abraham. 00:06:21.24\00:06:24.15 Anybody who was a descendent, a literal descendent of 00:06:24.18\00:06:27.12 Abraham even unto this day Jim, there are many Christians 00:06:27.15\00:06:30.85 who understand that the nation of Israel has this special 00:06:30.89\00:06:34.76 place in God's heart because of their natural lineage. 00:06:34.79\00:06:38.16 They don't take into account certain places and things 00:06:38.19\00:06:42.30 for example in the New Testament book of John chapter 8 00:06:42.33\00:06:46.13 Jesus is talking to the religious leaders and He tells 00:06:46.20\00:06:50.47 these Jewish leaders, natural born Jews, if you were 00:06:50.51\00:06:54.14 Abraham's children you would do the works of Abraham. 00:06:54.18\00:06:57.11 If you were Abraham's children? What's that about? 00:06:57.15\00:06:59.68 They were Abraham's children, but the point Jesus was 00:06:59.71\00:07:02.28 making is the point Paul is making right here. 00:07:02.32\00:07:05.62 That the understanding of the Jews was that their 00:07:05.69\00:07:08.92 inheritance was going to be based on being natural born 00:07:08.96\00:07:11.96 descendents of the line of Abraham. 00:07:11.99\00:07:15.23 Whereas, when Paul says Abraham's seed was not his 00:07:15.26\00:07:19.30 descendent, that the promise was made not through not Isaac, 00:07:19.33\00:07:24.14 but long after Isaac's line, Jesus Christ and all who would 00:07:24.17\00:07:28.94 be born of Him instead of born of Isaac. 00:07:28.98\00:07:32.41 I want to look at that real quickly in a couple of 00:07:32.45\00:07:36.79 passages, we are going to go to Romans 5:18, 19. 00:07:36.82\00:07:41.12 Romans 5:18, 19 the Bible says, "therefore, as though one 00:07:41.16\00:07:47.40 "man's offense, judgment came to all men" this is talking about 00:07:47.40\00:07:51.20 Adam, it was Adam's sin that pasted sin onto the human race. 00:07:51.23\00:07:55.00 It goes on to say, "resulting in condemnation, 00:07:55.07\00:07:58.64 "even so through one Man's righteous act. " 00:07:58.67\00:08:01.88 that would be Jesus, "the free gift came 00:08:01.91\00:08:05.01 "to all men, resulting in justification of life. 00:08:05.05\00:08:08.08 "For as by one man's disobedience many were made 00:08:08.12\00:08:11.39 "sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many 00:08:11.42\00:08:14.66 "will be made righteous. " 00:08:14.69\00:08:16.12 So it puts a contrast here between Jesus and Adam. 00:08:16.16\00:08:22.13 We see Paul doing that again in 1 Corinthians 15:22 00:08:22.16\00:08:29.27 it says, "for as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all 00:08:29.30\00:08:35.08 "all shall be made alive. " And then in verse 45 it says, 00:08:35.11\00:08:39.88 "and so it is written, the first man Adam became a living 00:08:39.91\00:08:44.65 "being. The last Adam became a life-giving Spirit. " 00:08:44.69\00:08:48.39 So here he actually applies this term last Adam to Jesus. 00:08:48.42\00:08:51.46 He is comparing the two and this is what he is saying. 00:08:51.49\00:08:54.76 Just as Adam was the progenitor of the human race. 00:08:54.83\00:08:58.03 We all descended from Adam, in the same way, and because 00:08:58.07\00:09:02.00 we descended from Adam we received what Adam passed on 00:09:02.04\00:09:05.21 to us, the nature of Adam, for fallen nature of sin. 00:09:05.24\00:09:09.21 So in the same way, those who received the nature of the 00:09:09.24\00:09:12.81 second Adam, one who came in Adam's place and lived the 00:09:12.85\00:09:16.42 perfect life that Adam failed to live. 00:09:16.45\00:09:19.49 That last Adam becomes the progenitor of the new race. 00:09:19.52\00:09:24.09 In other words, those who accept Jesus and are born of 00:09:24.13\00:09:28.90 Christ, of His Seed born of the Spirit become a member 00:09:28.93\00:09:33.74 of that Seed, that new family. 00:09:33.77\00:09:36.84 So the problem with the thinking of the Jews of 00:09:36.87\00:09:41.61 Christ's day and Paul's day where he is trying 00:09:41.64\00:09:43.75 to address them, is that their understanding was that 00:09:43.78\00:09:47.35 the blessing came from being born, and as I said many 00:09:47.38\00:09:51.02 Christians today that the blessing came from being born 00:09:51.05\00:09:54.69 of the nation of Israel instead of being born of 00:09:54.72\00:09:58.89 the true Israel, Jesus Christ. 00:09:58.96\00:10:01.53 That was the name that was given to Jacob once 00:10:01.56\00:10:03.43 he became a spiritual man and an overcomer. 00:10:03.50\00:10:05.30 It was a spiritual name that was pointing forward to 00:10:05.33\00:10:07.57 the true Israel, Jesus Christ who is going to be the head 00:10:07.60\00:10:10.77 of a new race and would pass on His nature to humanity 00:10:10.81\00:10:13.91 and then bring them into the family of God. 00:10:13.94\00:10:16.31 Amen, amen and you know when he continues in the book 00:10:16.34\00:10:19.85 of Galatians, he makes that point pretty strongly. 00:10:19.88\00:10:23.32 If we look back and Galatians 3 and I'll pick up in verse 00:10:23.35\00:10:27.49 26 so that we can catch the sense of what he was saying. 00:10:27.52\00:10:31.59 It says, "for you are all sons of God through faith 00:10:31.63\00:10:36.73 "in Christ Jesus. " Not to be honest that was something of 00:10:36.77\00:10:40.87 a heretical statement for Him to be making to them. 00:10:40.94\00:10:43.94 What? All sons of God! They believed that only the 00:10:43.97\00:10:46.94 circumcised were sons of God. 00:10:46.98\00:10:49.08 Only those that were of the direct lineage of Abraham. 00:10:49.11\00:10:51.98 If you weren't of the direct lineage Abraham then you needed 00:10:52.01\00:10:54.35 to be circumcised. - so much so that it didn't even 00:10:54.38\00:10:57.39 matter so much how you lived as long as you were 00:10:57.42\00:11:00.39 circumcised, against circum- cision became a substitute. 00:11:00.42\00:11:02.89 - a substitute for obedience, a substitute for genuine 00:11:02.92\00:11:06.46 faith and so he is making the point no, if you want to be 00:11:06.49\00:11:09.93 part of the family, you have to have the faith of Abraham 00:11:09.96\00:11:14.30 that brings this Spirit thereby being born of Christ. 00:11:14.37\00:11:18.67 Born of the Spirit of God. 00:11:18.71\00:11:20.74 It says in verse 27, "For as many of you as were baptized 00:11:20.78\00:11:25.05 "into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew 00:11:25.08\00:11:28.55 "nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is 00:11:28.58\00:11:32.02 "neither male nor female; for you are all one in 00:11:32.05\00:11:34.96 "Christ Jesus. " Now the part that really stung to some 00:11:34.99\00:11:39.63 was probably that first part. 00:11:39.66\00:11:41.93 There is neither Jew nor Greek. 00:11:41.96\00:11:44.17 I mean here Paul was saying there is no distinction, 00:11:44.20\00:11:46.90 you are all equal heirs to salvation, 00:11:46.94\00:11:50.64 the new birth question and in verse 29 he says, 00:11:50.67\00:11:54.38 "And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, 00:11:54.44\00:11:58.78 "and heirs according to the promise. " 00:11:58.81\00:12:01.85 Isn't that powerful? - It's powerful to me because I'm not 00:12:01.88\00:12:04.02 and natural born descendent of Abraham, but I'm 00:12:04.05\00:12:05.92 a heir of that inheritance. 00:12:05.95\00:12:08.82 And there is another place where it says this and 00:12:08.86\00:12:10.79 I thought it would be valuable for us to look at it 00:12:10.83\00:12:12.93 Because the New Testament is not silent on this point. 00:12:12.99\00:12:19.27 If you look at Romans 2:28 it was either earlier or 00:12:19.30\00:12:23.64 perhaps in our last episode where we were touching on 00:12:23.67\00:12:27.98 verses 25 and 26. 00:12:28.01\00:12:29.61 But in verse 28 it says, "for he is not a Jew who is 00:12:29.64\00:12:33.92 "one outwardly, nor is circum- cision that which is outward 00:12:33.98\00:12:38.05 "in the flesh. But he is a Jew who is one inwardly and 00:12:38.09\00:12:42.09 "circumcision is that of the heart. In the Spirit not 00:12:42.12\00:12:45.99 "in the letter whose praises not from men but from God. " 00:12:46.03\00:12:50.07 So when you look at this passage is pointing out that 00:12:50.10\00:12:54.37 it's the Spirit ultimately and not the letter that 00:12:54.40\00:12:58.64 makes us children of Abraham. 00:12:58.67\00:13:00.71 So the Spirit here is speaking about inwardly religion 00:13:00.74\00:13:03.75 that finds its way into the letter, into the outside, 00:13:03.78\00:13:07.22 but the letter doesn't always mean you are obeying the 00:13:07.25\00:13:10.89 spirit and so we have this beautiful picture painted for 00:13:10.92\00:13:14.52 us in the book of Galatians that any one of us 00:13:14.56\00:13:17.26 can be a child of Abraham through Christ. 00:13:17.29\00:13:20.00 May God bless you! 00:13:20.03\00:13:21.70
