Welcome back to Books of the Book, I'm Pastor Mark Howard. 00:00:24.15\00:00:27.39 I'm the director of the Emmanuel Institute of Evangelism 00:00:27.42\00:00:30.03 in the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventist and 00:00:30.06\00:00:32.36 I'm the Pastor of Gobels Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:32.39\00:00:34.60 and I'm here with my brother Jim Howard. 00:00:34.66\00:00:36.60 Yes my name is Pastor Jim Howard and I'm the Pastor of 00:00:36.63\00:00:39.60 the Detroit Metropolitan and South Lyon's Seventh-day 00:00:39.67\00:00:42.60 Adventist Church in Michigan. 00:00:42.64\00:00:44.11 And we are excited once again to study the 00:00:44.14\00:00:45.87 book of Galatians with you. 00:00:45.91\00:00:47.28 We love to get into the word and this book of all books 00:00:47.31\00:00:49.84 is so powerful and exciting. 00:00:49.88\00:00:52.11 It is full of powerful gospel truths and that is the 00:00:52.15\00:00:56.28 keynote of the book of Galatians is the gospel. 00:00:56.32\00:01:00.66 Paul wrote this to clarify the everlasting gospel and 00:01:00.69\00:01:04.23 the last time we were together we talked about what 00:01:04.26\00:01:08.56 Paul terms the curse of the law in Galatians Chapter 3 00:01:08.60\00:01:12.90 and we are going to follow that up almost where 00:01:12.93\00:01:16.64 we left off in Galatians Chapter 3. 00:01:16.67\00:01:18.57 In fact we will pick up a little bit and do a review in 00:01:18.61\00:01:21.48 Galatians 3:13 so if you have your Bible, those viewing 00:01:21.51\00:01:24.35 at home, if you would turn with us to Galatians 3 and 00:01:24.38\00:01:28.02 it is in the New Testament. 00:01:28.05\00:01:29.38 Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 00:01:29.42\00:01:31.62 1 and 2 Corinthians and then Galatians. 00:01:31.65\00:01:34.09 We're going to Galatians 3:13 and here the apostle writes 00:01:34.12\00:01:39.86 "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having 00:01:39.89\00:01:45.53 "become a curse for us (for it is written, cursed is 00:01:45.57\00:01:48.80 "everyone who hangs on a tree), that the blessing of 00:01:48.84\00:01:51.81 "Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, 00:01:51.84\00:01:54.81 "that we might receive the promise 00:01:54.84\00:01:56.71 "of the Spirit through faith. " 00:01:56.78\00:01:58.75 Something we need to grasp and just reiterating from 00:01:58.78\00:02:01.45 last time is that Christ did not come to redeem us 00:02:01.48\00:02:04.05 from the law but from the curse of the law. 00:02:04.09\00:02:06.59 Of course the curse of the law is the curse of sin. 00:02:06.65\00:02:09.02 "The wages of sin is death". 00:02:09.06\00:02:10.66 What is interesting here is that he goes into this 00:02:10.69\00:02:14.20 idea of the blessing of Abraham, the promise of the 00:02:14.20\00:02:17.60 Spirit and then he goes on from there to talk about 00:02:17.63\00:02:20.97 Abraham and his seed. 00:02:21.00\00:02:22.80 Today our topic is the 'Seed of Abraham'. 00:02:22.84\00:02:25.64 Jim you are going to pick up there in verse 15 00:02:25.67\00:02:28.44 I believe if you just want to start and pick up. 00:02:28.48\00:02:31.18 Sure I think we need to do is start back at verse 5 and let's 00:02:31.21\00:02:35.02 look there and get a little bit of an understanding of 00:02:35.05\00:02:38.85 this blessing of Abraham before we dive into 00:02:38.89\00:02:41.79 the Seed of Abraham. 00:02:41.82\00:02:43.36 We're starting in verse 5 of Galatians 3 where it says, 00:02:43.39\00:02:46.36 "therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works 00:02:46.43\00:02:49.40 "miracles among you, does He do it by works of the law, 00:02:49.43\00:02:52.47 "or by the hearing of faith? - just as Abraham believed 00:02:52.50\00:02:55.50 "God... it was accounted to him for righteousness. 00:02:55.54\00:02:59.07 "Therefore know that only those who are of faith are 00:02:59.11\00:03:02.74 "sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, for seeing that God 00:03:02.78\00:03:06.31 "would justify the Gentiles by faith, preach the gospel 00:03:06.35\00:03:10.05 "to Abraham beforehand, saying, in you all the nations 00:03:10.09\00:03:13.72 "shall be blessed. So then those who are of faith are 00:03:13.76\00:03:17.36 "blessed with believing Abraham. " 00:03:17.39\00:03:19.59 This is a fascinating passage. 00:03:19.66\00:03:21.76 I want to add a clarification here, in some translations 00:03:21.80\00:03:23.97 it is faithful Abraham weren't blessed because they believe 00:03:24.03\00:03:26.17 Abraham, but they are blessed along with Abraham 00:03:26.20\00:03:30.17 who was a believer and who was faithful. 00:03:30.21\00:03:32.31 That could be confusing, but if you look at verse 8 00:03:32.34\00:03:36.08 specifically, "the Scripture for seeing that God would 00:03:36.11\00:03:39.81 "justify the Gentiles by faith. " 00:03:39.85\00:03:42.68 So here we see that God was fore seeing that the Gentiles 00:03:42.72\00:03:47.19 were going to be part of this blessing and this promise 00:03:47.22\00:03:51.66 that was given to Abraham. 00:03:51.69\00:03:53.09 It says not in you all the Jews shall be blessed 00:03:53.13\00:03:56.40 but in you all the nations shall be blessed. 00:03:56.43\00:03:59.67 So that would include not only those who are commonly referred 00:03:59.70\00:04:03.81 to as the circumcised, but it would also include the 00:04:03.84\00:04:07.28 uncircumcised which the apostle Paul here is saying 00:04:07.31\00:04:11.41 is that means evidently that God was justifying not 00:04:11.45\00:04:14.98 because of the circumcision of Abraham but because of 00:04:15.02\00:04:17.65 the faith of Abraham. - That's right, that's right! 00:04:17.69\00:04:20.19 If all the Gentiles were going to receive the same 00:04:20.22\00:04:22.79 blessing then it must come by faith and not by 00:04:22.82\00:04:25.33 circumcision and then in verse 14 where you had read 00:04:25.36\00:04:29.06 in the open it said, "that the blessing of Abraham might 00:04:29.10\00:04:32.73 "come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might 00:04:32.77\00:04:36.71 "receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. " 00:04:36.74\00:04:41.91 So here we have Abraham as the one to whom the promise 00:04:41.94\00:04:46.35 was made, and the promise that the apostle Paul said 00:04:46.38\00:04:50.35 he would receive and the Gentiles would receive is the 00:04:50.39\00:04:54.32 promise of the Spirit which is fascinating. 00:04:54.36\00:04:58.56 The Spirit in other places the apostle Paul talks about 00:04:58.59\00:05:02.60 having a special role in terms of our awareness 00:05:02.63\00:05:07.14 of the eternal inheritance. 00:05:07.17\00:05:09.34 When we have the Spirit is what he calls a guarantee of 00:05:09.37\00:05:12.91 our eternal inheritance. 00:05:12.94\00:05:14.28 There is one place where we might look at that. 00:05:14.31\00:05:15.64 Ephesians chapter 1 and we will look at verse 13 it says, 00:05:15.68\00:05:24.25 "in Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of 00:05:24.29\00:05:30.23 "truth, but gospel of your salvation; in whom also, 00:05:30.26\00:05:36.10 "having believed, you were sealed with the 00:05:36.13\00:05:37.97 "Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our 00:05:38.00\00:05:41.50 "inheritance until the redemption of the purchased 00:05:41.54\00:05:44.91 "possession," so the guarantee of our inheritance is 00:05:44.94\00:05:47.78 the Spirit. - that's right. - so when the Gentiles 00:05:47.81\00:05:51.78 received the Spirit that was evidence that they were 00:05:51.81\00:05:55.72 partakers of the inheritance that was promised to Abraham. 00:05:55.75\00:05:59.39 So you have this example for instance, remember we 00:05:59.42\00:06:03.49 studied about Acts 15 where the apostle Peter made 00:06:03.53\00:06:07.36 the point, he said look we know that God intends for 00:06:07.40\00:06:11.83 the Gentiles to be equal inheritors of the promise 00:06:11.87\00:06:16.27 with the Jews because the Gentiles received 00:06:16.30\00:06:19.74 the Spirit just like we did. 00:06:19.77\00:06:21.78 So the Spirit becomes that promise that God had given. 00:06:21.81\00:06:25.05 Now here is an interesting thought. 00:06:25.11\00:06:26.82 These Judaizers in the Galatian church who were causing 00:06:26.85\00:06:33.62 so much trouble and perverting the gospel. 00:06:33.66\00:06:35.52 They were not only missing how to obtain the promise, 00:06:35.56\00:06:41.03 but they were misconstruing what the promise itself was. 00:06:41.06\00:06:45.37 They were not only misconstruing how to be justified, 00:06:45.40\00:06:49.90 to receive the blessing of Abraham but they were missing 00:06:49.94\00:06:54.41 what the blessing even was. 00:06:54.44\00:06:56.14 The blessing was the Spirit, being born of the Spirit. 00:06:56.18\00:06:59.28 They were seeking to just use circumcision to avoid 00:06:59.31\00:07:02.45 having to have that internal change, 00:07:02.48\00:07:05.29 that the Spirit would bring. 00:07:05.32\00:07:06.86 You see the Spirit is born-again experience, that change 00:07:06.89\00:07:10.86 of heart, that change of life and they were putting 00:07:10.93\00:07:15.00 the circumcision as a substitute for that change and 00:07:15.03\00:07:18.33 they were missing out on the power of the Gospel 00:07:18.37\00:07:21.64 which is a changed life. 00:07:21.67\00:07:23.81 That is right, and you know Jim what is interesting and 00:07:23.84\00:07:27.08 important here to note is that some people when they read 00:07:27.11\00:07:30.15 Galatians or even when they read through the Scriptures, they 00:07:30.18\00:07:33.18 want to lump in circumcision and the whole system of 00:07:33.21\00:07:37.25 the law together and I have had people ask me, 00:07:37.29\00:07:40.56 Christians come up and ask me, isn't it true that the 00:07:40.59\00:07:43.66 law of circumcision and the law of sacrifice and offering and 00:07:43.69\00:07:48.16 the Ten Commandments was all one system of law? 00:07:48.23\00:07:50.43 In one sense there is truth to that, in the sense that 00:07:50.47\00:07:53.47 the Old Testament for example, the word for law is the 00:07:53.50\00:07:56.47 word Torah and it means instruction. 00:07:56.50\00:07:59.21 When you read the word law in the Old Testament you are 00:07:59.24\00:08:01.88 talking about the Torah or the instruction of God. 00:08:01.91\00:08:04.85 The Hebrews have that connected together in the 00:08:04.88\00:08:07.75 Pentateuch which is the first five books of the Bible, 00:08:07.78\00:08:10.02 the books of Moses. 00:08:10.05\00:08:11.95 So while that is true yet there was also a distinction. 00:08:11.99\00:08:15.86 For example, the Ten Commandments of God were written 00:08:15.89\00:08:19.69 with finger of God, but only thing in Scripture 00:08:19.73\00:08:22.46 we know that was part of the document that was written 00:08:22.50\00:08:25.43 with God's own finger when it was transported 00:08:25.47\00:08:28.60 throughout the experience of Israel. 00:08:28.64\00:08:30.54 It was carried in the sacred Ark of the Covenant, whereas the 00:08:30.57\00:08:33.74 other laws of Moses were put in a special pocket beside 00:08:33.78\00:08:36.68 the Ark of the Covenant. So there was a distinction there. 00:08:36.71\00:08:39.61 In the New Testament we find for example, in 00:08:39.65\00:08:42.28 1 Corinthians Chapter 7 the apostle Paul draws a very 00:08:42.32\00:08:46.62 clear distinction between circumcision and the 00:08:46.65\00:08:49.46 Ten Commandments, I think because he foresaw the tendency 00:08:49.49\00:08:53.56 of some may be to try and draw a separation or lump them 00:08:53.60\00:08:57.10 together and he wanted to make sure that even though 00:08:57.13\00:09:00.64 circumcision was a rite given by God, it was a rite given 00:09:00.67\00:09:04.54 to Abraham because of his diversion in God's plan. 00:09:04.57\00:09:09.08 It was not part of the original plan and it was a clear 00:09:09.11\00:09:12.18 distinction to be held apart from the Ten Commandment law. 00:09:12.21\00:09:15.72 1 Corinthians 7:19 says, the apostle Paul writes here, 00:09:15.75\00:09:19.69 "circumcision is nothing an uncircumcision is nothing," 00:09:19.72\00:09:23.12 and this is in the sense of not that it was insignificant 00:09:23.16\00:09:26.73 God had given it, but in the greater scheme of things it 00:09:26.76\00:09:30.27 wasn't the main issue, "circumcision is nothing and 00:09:30.30\00:09:33.13 "uncircumcised is nothing, but keeping the Commandments 00:09:33.17\00:09:36.47 "of God is what matters. " 00:09:36.50\00:09:38.64 So there is a clear distinction between circumcision 00:09:38.67\00:09:40.64 and the Ten Commandment law. 00:09:40.68\00:09:42.41 That's right and I have actually heard someone say 00:09:42.44\00:09:45.15 before that word keeping the commandments of God, he is not 00:09:45.21\00:09:49.82 talking about the Ten Commandments It's just talking 00:09:49.85\00:09:51.35 about the commands of Jesus so It's making a distinction there. 00:09:51.42\00:09:55.02 But I think if we look in Romans we will find it further 00:09:55.09\00:09:59.19 outlines that exact point. 00:09:59.23\00:10:01.16 So looking back at Romans 2:21 in says, "you, therefore, 00:10:01.20\00:10:06.87 "who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who 00:10:06.90\00:10:11.01 "preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? 00:10:11.04\00:10:14.21 "You who say, do not commit adultery, do you commit 00:10:14.24\00:10:17.35 "adultery?" So clearly he is talking about the 00:10:17.38\00:10:18.88 Ten Commandments right? - right. 00:10:18.91\00:10:20.62 Now in verse 25 he says, "For circumcision is indeed 00:10:20.65\00:10:25.12 "profitable if you keep the law; but if you are a breaker 00:10:25.15\00:10:30.03 "of the law, you're circumcision has become 00:10:30.06\00:10:32.53 "uncircumcision. " Now this next verse is where the difference is 00:10:32.56\00:10:36.83 clearly made. "Therefore, if an uncircumcised man 00:10:36.87\00:10:40.47 "keeps the righteous requirements of the law, 00:10:40.50\00:10:44.07 "will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision?" 00:10:44.11\00:10:47.44 So in the context of the Ten Commandments- 00:10:47.48\00:10:49.61 - How can an uncircumcised man keep the righteous requirements 00:10:49.64\00:10:51.81 off the law if circumcision is part of the law? 00:10:51.85\00:10:54.65 Now that is exactly right and clearly in the context 00:10:54.68\00:10:56.75 in this one the law he is speaking of, is the 00:10:56.82\00:11:00.06 Ten Commandments. - in the very context that is absolutely true. 00:11:00.09\00:11:02.66 So this idea of circumcision and the promises of God, 00:11:02.69\00:11:09.83 the Jews had gotten distorted in their understanding of the 00:11:09.86\00:11:13.97 importance of circumcision and actually placed it 00:11:14.00\00:11:16.94 in the place of obedience. 00:11:16.97\00:11:20.14 It is interesting there in the passage you read in Romans 00:11:20.18\00:11:25.15 that he said that circumcision is only significant if you 00:11:25.18\00:11:30.09 are obedient to God. - right. 00:11:30.12\00:11:32.65 So we read the other day that circumcision, 00:11:32.69\00:11:35.52 the Bible said was given to Abraham in Romans 4 as a sign 00:11:35.56\00:11:40.86 of faith, not a sign of obedience, but a sign of faith. 00:11:40.90\00:11:46.17 Yet in Romans 2 it says that circumcision is only 00:11:46.20\00:11:49.17 profitable if you obey. 00:11:49.20\00:11:52.07 So we see the link with faith and obedience once again 00:11:52.11\00:11:54.61 in the writings of Paul. 00:11:54.64\00:11:55.98 Faith obeys, the exercise of faith is obedience. 00:11:56.01\00:12:00.92 Now we are going to go to verse 15 in Galatians 3 00:12:00.95\00:12:04.92 and we are going to carry on here in Paul's writing. 00:12:04.95\00:12:08.86 Galatians 3:15 it says, Brethren rather I speak in the manner of 00:12:08.92\00:12:11.36 "men: Though it is only a man's covenant, yet if it is 00:12:11.39\00:12:14.73 "confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it. Now to Abraham 00:12:14.76\00:12:17.97 "and his Seed where the promises made. He does not say, 00:12:18.00\00:12:21.60 "And to seeds, as of many, but as of one, And to your 00:12:21.64\00:12:25.07 "Seed, who is Christ. And this I say, that the law, 00:12:25.11\00:12:28.04 "which was 430 years later, cannot annul the covenant 00:12:28.11\00:12:31.11 "that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it 00:12:31.15\00:12:33.78 "should make the promise of no effect. For if the 00:12:33.85\00:12:36.38 "inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; 00:12:36.45\00:12:39.19 "but God gave it to Abraham by promise. " 00:12:39.22\00:12:41.36 Now Paul's listeners here, his audience believed in 00:12:41.39\00:12:45.03 Abraham, they believed in the promise that God gave 00:12:45.06\00:12:48.56 to Abraham, they believed that the descendent of Abraham 00:12:48.60\00:12:53.74 was the one through whom the promises would come and 00:12:53.77\00:12:58.84 and that was Isaac. - right. 00:12:58.87\00:13:01.04 However Paul takes that belief that they hold in common, 00:13:01.08\00:13:04.65 yes Abraham was the father of the faithful, yes God 00:13:04.68\00:13:07.55 the promises, but then he turns it and says I agree with 00:13:07.58\00:13:11.15 you all but you guys need to understand that 00:13:11.19\00:13:13.09 the Seed was not Isaac at all, the Seed was Christ. 00:13:13.12\00:13:17.96 In other words to be a part of Isaac means you have to 00:13:17.99\00:13:22.13 be a descendent of Abraham, literally born of the Jewish 00:13:22.16\00:13:26.27 nation and circumcised, but if he wasn't the Seed, 00:13:26.30\00:13:29.54 then circumcision isn't the way into the family. 00:13:29.57\00:13:32.74 So he is bringing out the fact that the seed is not Isaac. 00:13:32.77\00:13:37.28 The seed really is Christ. 00:13:37.31\00:13:39.05 And we have to go to our break and we come back from our 00:13:39.08\00:13:43.05 break we are going to address this issue of the Seed of 00:13:43.08\00:13:47.22 Abraham, not as Isaac in the literal nation of Israel, 00:13:47.26\00:13:51.06 but the Seed of Abraham is Christ and we are talking about 00:13:51.13\00:13:54.86 spiritual Israel here, so stay tuned, 00:13:54.93\00:13:56.87 We will be right back! 00:13:56.90\00:13:58.47
