Welcome back, right before our break we were talking about 00:00:05.07\00:00:09.07 the purpose of the law. 00:00:09.10\00:00:10.87 Jim you are going to jump right in here to Galatians 3. 00:00:10.91\00:00:15.94 Let's take a look at Galatians 3:19, right there the 00:00:15.98\00:00:20.95 apostle Paul pretty much fore- shadows, he is thinking ahead 00:00:20.98\00:00:24.92 and knows what type of questions are coming. 00:00:24.95\00:00:26.99 In verse 19 he says, "what purpose then does the law 00:00:27.02\00:00:31.36 "serve?" If the law, like that bowl of fruit wasn't to 00:00:31.39\00:00:35.66 catch the oil, does that mean we throw it away? 00:00:35.70\00:00:38.40 If the law wasn't for justification does that 00:00:38.43\00:00:41.14 mean there is no need for the law? 00:00:41.17\00:00:42.74 The apostle Paul is trying to address that question. 00:00:42.77\00:00:44.61 He says, "it was added because of transgressions," let me 00:00:44.67\00:00:49.41 stop there for a moment. 00:00:49.44\00:00:50.78 There are many people when they look at that think well 00:00:50.85\00:00:53.85 the Ten Commandments then must have been added just 00:00:53.88\00:00:56.89 because of sin and then it goes on to say, 00:00:56.92\00:01:00.62 "till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made;" 00:01:00.66\00:01:04.03 so they must have just been added because of sin and then 00:01:04.06\00:01:07.23 they end and there is no longer a need to keep them after 00:01:07.30\00:01:10.40 the Seed has come. 00:01:10.43\00:01:12.27 We are going to address that a little more as we advance 00:01:12.30\00:01:14.37 along but I want to make this point. 00:01:14.40\00:01:15.97 When it says law, first of all this is talking about not 00:01:16.00\00:01:19.74 just the Ten Commandments, again it's that word nomos, 00:01:19.77\00:01:23.48 it just means law in general. 00:01:23.51\00:01:24.85 - our viewers if they weren't here before, the Greek 00:01:24.88\00:01:29.68 or original text of Galatians does not use a definite 00:01:29.75\00:01:34.52 article anywhere Paul is talking about law. 00:01:34.56\00:01:36.69 In other words it's not the law, but in the original it 00:01:36.73\00:01:39.63 is simply law. - that's right. 00:01:39.66\00:01:41.86 So the idea is what is the purpose of law in general if 00:01:41.90\00:01:45.10 the promise is how we are to receive the inheritance? 00:01:45.13\00:01:48.04 So he says it was added because of transgressions. 00:01:48.07\00:01:51.97 If you think about, whether it's the moral law, the 00:01:52.01\00:01:55.28 Ten Commandments, whether it's the sacrificial laws, 00:01:55.31\00:01:58.51 whether it's circumcision, the issue that was heeded in the 00:01:58.55\00:02:02.32 book of Galatians, what ever your talking about in terms of 00:02:02.35\00:02:06.02 law, the reason that they were given in part 00:02:06.05\00:02:09.26 was because of transgression. 00:02:09.32\00:02:11.59 In other words prior to any sin coming into the world 00:02:11.63\00:02:15.56 there was no need because the principles of the law 00:02:15.60\00:02:18.60 were in the heart and people were living the law 00:02:18.63\00:02:21.57 in their lives, God's creation was living out the law. 00:02:21.60\00:02:25.21 Once there was a fall, especially once God's people 00:02:25.24\00:02:28.81 went into Egypt and they came out. 00:02:28.84\00:02:31.28 In order to instruct them, in order to give humanity 00:02:31.31\00:02:33.68 a clear picture once more of His will, the law was given. 00:02:33.72\00:02:37.89 He speaks of it as being given with a specific role in 00:02:37.92\00:02:41.69 this time, but this giving of the law isn't talking 00:02:41.72\00:02:45.46 about the existence of the law in the whole. 00:02:45.49\00:02:48.00 It's talking about a picture of God's will, 00:02:48.03\00:02:50.53 a picture of God's will. 00:02:50.57\00:02:52.30 So what we are going to look at here in this next verse 00:02:52.37\00:02:55.30 it's going to begin to flush out for us what the real 00:02:55.34\00:02:58.24 purpose of the law was as proclaimed from Sinai. 00:02:58.31\00:03:02.01 So it says in the next part, "it was added because 00:03:02.04\00:03:05.61 "of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the 00:03:05.65\00:03:08.42 "promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by 00:03:08.45\00:03:11.19 "the hand of a mediator. Now the mediator does not 00:03:11.25\00:03:13.72 "mediate for one only, but God is one. " 00:03:13.76\00:03:15.92 He is simply making the point the law and the promises 00:03:15.96\00:03:18.43 both came from God and God is one. 00:03:18.49\00:03:20.76 They are not contrary to one another. 00:03:20.80\00:03:22.96 It is also interesting that he makes the point that it 00:03:23.00\00:03:26.47 came through the hand of a mediator, that it was appointed 00:03:26.50\00:03:29.80 by angels, the same things Stephen said when they stoned 00:03:29.84\00:03:33.64 him, they receive the law through the direction of angels 00:03:33.68\00:03:37.41 and have not kept it. 00:03:37.45\00:03:38.78 So both the apostle Paul, Paul is just repeating the words 00:03:38.81\00:03:41.85 of Stephen who had an active part in his own conversion. 00:03:41.88\00:03:45.22 When you say that something is received from the hand of 00:03:45.25\00:03:48.59 angels you are displaying its exalted character. 00:03:48.62\00:03:52.03 If something came to the hand of angels, 00:03:52.06\00:03:53.80 you are talking about something sacred. 00:03:53.86\00:03:55.50 - that is exactly right. Then he says in verse 21, 00:03:55.53\00:03:58.60 "is the law then against" - I want to backup Jim. 00:03:58.63\00:04:01.34 I want to backup, it is interesting in my study and I 00:04:01.40\00:04:04.14 know you have done a lot of studying" in the book of 00:04:04.17\00:04:06.88 Galatians, most commentators have 00:04:06.91\00:04:09.18 a real problem with verse 20. 00:04:09.21\00:04:10.85 They say in verse 20 wall was Paul making a point of? 00:04:10.88\00:04:13.82 Then they wrestle and wrestle and I think the reason so 00:04:13.85\00:04:16.79 many people wrestle with verse 20 is because they want 00:04:16.82\00:04:19.75 to pit the law against the promises. 00:04:19.79\00:04:22.12 When you understand the reality, Paul is saying there 00:04:22.16\00:04:25.23 is look the same God who mediated the law, mediated the 00:04:25.26\00:04:28.20 promises, the same God who gave the law gave the promises, 00:04:28.23\00:04:31.17 therefore they cannot be contradictory. 00:04:31.20\00:04:32.93 They go together and go hand-in-hand so don't try to pit 00:04:32.97\00:04:37.27 them against each other and then you may understand 00:04:37.34\00:04:40.08 the truth of God. 00:04:40.11\00:04:41.44 That's right, excellent point. 00:04:41.48\00:04:43.18 In verse 21 than he begins to talk about why they are not 00:04:43.21\00:04:45.38 pitted against each other. 00:04:45.45\00:04:46.78 He asks, "is the law then against the promises of God?" 00:04:46.82\00:04:49.72 The answer is pretty strong. "Certainly not! For if 00:04:49.75\00:04:52.62 "there had been a law given which could have given life, 00:04:52.65\00:04:55.42 "truly righteousness would have been by the law. " 00:04:55.46\00:04:58.76 So here the apostle Paul is saying there is no law that 00:04:58.79\00:05:03.20 gives righteousness, that is somewhat obvious. 00:05:03.23\00:05:07.64 Righteousness is right living, it denotes life. 00:05:07.67\00:05:12.07 The law is not able to give life, only the 00:05:12.11\00:05:16.44 Life-giver can give life. 00:05:16.48\00:05:17.81 I mentioned before the break the text in Isaiah says that 00:05:17.85\00:05:21.75 God talks about those who know righteousness, speaks of 00:05:21.78\00:05:24.89 the people that know righteousness, he says, you who 00:05:24.92\00:05:27.99 know righteousness in whose people whose heart is My law. 00:05:28.02\00:05:31.96 I'd like to say that righteous- ness is right being that is 00:05:31.99\00:05:35.86 manifested in right doing. 00:05:35.90\00:05:37.70 It's not just outward it starts inwardly, but can't help 00:05:37.73\00:05:40.50 but to become outward. 00:05:40.57\00:05:42.44 1 John 3:7 says, "do not deceived, He who practices 00:05:42.47\00:05:48.41 "righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. " 00:05:48.44\00:05:52.45 There are some people who want to say righteousness is 00:05:52.48\00:05:55.95 all inward, it's always inward eye has nothing to do with 00:05:55.98\00:05:59.02 outward, but that is not true anymore than righteousness 00:05:59.05\00:06:02.12 being outward and not inward, it's both. 00:06:02.16\00:06:03.69 That's right, and you know there is something else 00:06:03.73\00:06:06.26 we discussed before is that righteousness, 00:06:06.29\00:06:08.33 when you look at the righteous- ness you can see in the law, 00:06:08.36\00:06:11.23 the law of God as it's shown is sort of like 00:06:11.30\00:06:14.90 a picture of a person. 00:06:14.94\00:06:17.81 So God's righteousness is expressed in the law sort of 00:06:17.87\00:06:23.41 the same way a picture of me expresses who I am. 00:06:23.45\00:06:27.48 Yeah you can see who I am, but the embodiment of who I am, 00:06:27.52\00:06:32.05 the fullness of who I am isn't there. 00:06:32.09\00:06:35.66 You can't get life out of that. 00:06:35.69\00:06:37.53 In the same way you can't get life out of the law. 00:06:37.56\00:06:40.00 You can only get life from a Life-giver. 00:06:40.03\00:06:42.53 So he makes the point, if there had been a law given which 00:06:42.56\00:06:45.40 could have given life, truly righteousness would have been 00:06:45.43\00:06:48.17 by the law, but there is no righteousness that can come 00:06:48.20\00:06:50.91 out of the law. 00:06:50.94\00:06:52.57 One good example of how God dealt with that is in the book 00:06:52.61\00:06:55.21 of Romans, I thought maybe we could look there together. 00:06:55.24\00:07:00.15 If you go to Romans 7, in chapter 7 you will remember from 00:07:00.18\00:07:04.95 a previous episode, we looked at verse 14 where it says, 00:07:04.99\00:07:09.69 "for we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, 00:07:09.72\00:07:14.50 "sold under sin. " So law is spiritual but I'm carnal and 00:07:14.56\00:07:18.03 we had this disconnect, we've talked about that before. 00:07:18.07\00:07:23.00 So in verse three of chapter 8, Romans 8:3 it says, 00:07:23.04\00:07:26.98 "for what the law could not do in that it was weak 00:07:27.01\00:07:30.28 "through the flesh. " We just read in Galatians the law 00:07:30.35\00:07:33.58 couldn't give life. - that's right! 00:07:33.62\00:07:35.28 Because it was weak in the flesh. 00:07:35.32\00:07:36.89 The law is spiritual, but we are carnal. - that's right! 00:07:36.92\00:07:40.26 So because the law could not give life something else had 00:07:40.29\00:07:43.53 to be done and it says what God does right after this. 00:07:43.56\00:07:46.49 "For what the law could not do in that it was weak 00:07:46.53\00:07:49.40 "through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the 00:07:49.43\00:07:52.80 "likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned 00:07:52.83\00:07:56.10 "sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law 00:07:56.17\00:07:59.51 "might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the 00:07:59.54\00:08:02.94 "flesh but according to the Spirit. " 00:08:02.98\00:08:05.71 So from God we receive the Spirit, the law can't give us 00:08:05.75\00:08:10.15 the Spirit, but God gives us His Spirit which creates 00:08:10.22\00:08:14.86 that submission to God, that crucifixion of selfishness. 00:08:14.89\00:08:18.66 I think of it in my own life, what does that look like? 00:08:18.69\00:08:22.36 For me, suddenly I had a hunger for God. 00:08:22.40\00:08:24.90 I had an interest for the things of God. 00:08:24.93\00:08:27.37 I desired to follow God, my heart was melted by the love 00:08:27.40\00:08:30.87 of Christ and suddenly my attitude towards spiritual 00:08:30.91\00:08:34.31 things changed, that is what the Spirit can do 00:08:34.34\00:08:36.98 that the law simply cannot do. 00:08:37.05\00:08:38.98 That's right, that's right and so you have this, one of 00:08:39.01\00:08:42.55 the things about the law is that it points out a condition 00:08:42.58\00:08:46.05 and it makes known to us the reality that we have no 00:08:46.12\00:08:50.13 righteousness, yet we need righteousness 00:08:50.19\00:08:52.83 if we are going to have life. 00:08:52.89\00:08:54.20 So as Paul goes on in Galatians 3:22 he says, "but the 00:08:54.23\00:08:59.67 "Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by 00:08:59.70\00:09:05.34 "faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who 00:09:05.37\00:09:07.98 "believe. But before faith came, we were kept under guard 00:09:08.01\00:09:12.15 "by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be 00:09:12.18\00:09:15.18 "revealed. " Now before when he said until the Seed should 00:09:15.22\00:09:18.22 come but now here he links faith to that. 00:09:18.25\00:09:21.32 I'm not going to comment on that but I want us to look at 00:09:21.36\00:09:23.46 the language he uses and depending on your 00:09:23.53\00:09:25.33 Bible translation, mine uses the word confined under sin. 00:09:25.36\00:09:30.53 Kept under guard by the law, I think the King James says, 00:09:30.57\00:09:35.07 shut up under sin and other translations use these similar 00:09:35.10\00:09:39.21 words, shut up, confined, kept under guard, like you are 00:09:39.24\00:09:43.28 being jailed and what the Bible is doing here. 00:09:43.35\00:09:46.08 What Paul is doing is showing the role of the law 00:09:46.11\00:09:48.82 as a disciplinarian. 00:09:48.85\00:09:51.55 In other words for the unconverted person, the law's 00:09:51.59\00:09:55.29 role our relation to the law because we are sinners, 00:09:55.32\00:09:58.23 all the law you like and do is condemn our actions. 00:09:58.26\00:10:01.06 It can't give us righteousness, it can just bear witness 00:10:01.10\00:10:04.33 to righteousness, it can show us right and wrong, but it 00:10:04.37\00:10:07.47 can't transform us because we are untransformed because 00:10:07.50\00:10:11.04 we are carnal and all the law can do is say you are carnal 00:10:11.07\00:10:14.61 you are condemned, you're on death row. 00:10:14.64\00:10:17.31 That is right. - the Bible says kept under guard by the 00:10:17.35\00:10:22.42 law for the faith which will be revealed. 00:10:22.45\00:10:24.99 So the idea is you are shut up in this prison cell and 00:10:25.02\00:10:30.09 it's an unpleasant experience until you come to the 00:10:30.13\00:10:35.10 realization that there is one door out. 00:10:35.13\00:10:37.73 - that's right, that's right and so this idea of sin, 00:10:37.77\00:10:41.24 the law revealing our sin, of course the wages of sin 00:10:41.27\00:10:44.67 is death so when the law reveals our sin it automatically 00:10:44.71\00:10:49.78 shows us we are doomed to die eternally. 00:10:49.81\00:10:53.15 So we are in this fearful mode until, like you said, 00:10:53.18\00:10:57.35 you see that the door, that door is faith coming. 00:10:57.39\00:11:01.19 Faith in what? Faith in Christ is exactly right. 00:11:01.22\00:11:04.86 Verse 23 says, "but before faith came, we were kept under 00:11:04.89\00:11:07.66 "guard by the law, For the faith which would afterward be 00:11:07.66\00:11:11.60 "revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to 00:11:11.63\00:11:15.54 "Christ, that we might be justified by faith. " 00:11:15.57\00:11:18.17 The law couldn't give us life, but it's certainly wants 00:11:18.21\00:11:21.51 us to have life. - that's right. 00:11:21.54\00:11:23.38 It says look, you are outside of My will so you are doomed 00:11:23.41\00:11:26.72 to die, the law is simply an expression of God's will. 00:11:26.75\00:11:30.72 God uses the law to show us our guilt, to give us a deep 00:11:30.75\00:11:34.69 conviction that we need Him. 00:11:34.72\00:11:36.86 That leads us to Christ. And then it says, "but after 00:11:36.89\00:11:40.10 "faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. " 00:11:40.13\00:11:44.37 So once the law fulfills its role, as a jail master, 00:11:44.40\00:11:48.64 as it were, showing us that we are outside of God's will. 00:11:48.67\00:11:52.91 We are destined to die eternally, we say oh, I need to 00:11:52.94\00:11:56.54 escape from this and we reach out by faith in Christ 00:11:56.58\00:12:00.22 and receive His sacrifice in our behalf. 00:12:00.25\00:12:03.25 We received the Spirit of God which gives us a humble 00:12:03.28\00:12:06.65 heart that now the law can recognize. 00:12:06.69\00:12:10.09 Now we do not need that law from a jail master role 00:12:10.13\00:12:13.76 anymore. - no not in the role of a disciplinarian. 00:12:13.80\00:12:17.33 Like when you're growing up as a child and your parents 00:12:17.37\00:12:20.14 tell you to do this and do that, the hope is one of 00:12:20.17\00:12:22.90 these days it will be in your heart and 00:12:22.94\00:12:25.34 you will choose to do it. 00:12:25.37\00:12:26.71 So in the will of God, before we come to Christ the law 00:12:26.74\00:12:31.61 tells us what's wrong and it's abrasive, we don't like it. 00:12:31.65\00:12:36.45 But when our heart is converted it becomes in our heart to 00:12:36.48\00:12:41.26 choose to do the things that please God. 00:12:41.29\00:12:44.16 Just like David said, now all of a sudden it is 00:12:44.19\00:12:45.99 oh how I love thy law. - that's right. 00:12:46.03\00:12:47.73 Something changes and I think of Psalms 19 were it says, 00:12:47.76\00:12:50.93 "the law of the Lord is perfect converting the soul. " 00:12:50.97\00:12:54.14 We know that only God can convert the soul. 00:12:54.17\00:12:56.94 But the Lord Jesus uses the law to lead us to Himself 00:12:56.97\00:13:02.14 that we might find a humility that brings us into 00:13:02.18\00:13:06.68 Harmony, spirituality which the law is trying 00:13:06.72\00:13:11.19 to get us to have. 00:13:11.22\00:13:12.55 So now we are desirous of keeping the law. 00:13:12.59\00:13:15.79 That is just a powerful thought. 00:13:15.82\00:13:17.53 I hope you will join us next time. 00:13:17.56\00:13:19.23
