Welcome to Books of the Book, I'm Pastor Mark Howard 00:00:22.35\00:00:25.62 of the Gobels Seventh-day Adventist church 00:00:25.69\00:00:27.76 and also director of the Emmanuel Institute of Evangelism 00:00:27.79\00:00:30.06 in the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventist. 00:00:30.09\00:00:32.09 I'm here at my brother and co-host Jim. 00:00:32.16\00:00:34.36 Yes and hello my name is Pastor Jim Howard and I am the Pastor 00:00:34.40\00:00:37.80 of the Detroit Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:37.87\00:00:40.30 and South Lyon's Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:00:40.34\00:00:42.67 We are excited to be studying the book of 00:00:42.74\00:00:44.31 Galatians with you today. 00:00:44.34\00:00:45.74 Absolutely this book is so powerful and we have talked 00:00:45.77\00:00:49.04 about the fact that the book of Galatians is the one, 00:00:49.08\00:00:52.65 probably the most concise book dealing with the subject 00:00:52.68\00:00:56.22 of the Gospel in the whole Scripture. 00:00:56.25\00:00:58.39 That is the apostle Paul's point. 00:00:58.42\00:01:00.59 False gospels have come in and he is setting forth the 00:01:00.62\00:01:03.22 true Gospel from several different angles. 00:01:03.26\00:01:05.73 What we find, especially in the book of Galatians is that 00:01:05.76\00:01:08.60 Paul is trying to give us a clear understanding of the 00:01:08.63\00:01:11.43 relation between the law of God, not only the 00:01:11.47\00:01:15.30 Ten Commandments law but the Torah, the instruction of God 00:01:15.34\00:01:18.37 with the Gospel and how the two interact together. 00:01:18.41\00:01:23.08 We have also talked about how there are people who at 00:01:23.11\00:01:27.68 a surface reading will use the book of Galatians and assume 00:01:27.72\00:01:31.42 the book of Galatians is actually talking negatively and 00:01:31.45\00:01:35.19 talking about law in a derogatively and this will be 00:01:35.26\00:01:38.46 a passage that we are looking at here today starting 00:01:38.49\00:01:41.66 in Chapter 3:10. 00:01:41.70\00:01:43.57 - were that often gets misconstrued in that way. 00:01:43.60\00:01:46.97 That's right, and the title of our study today 00:01:47.00\00:01:50.27 'The Curse of the Law' right from Galatians Chapter 3. 00:01:50.31\00:01:53.31 If you have your Bibles with you I would encourage you 00:01:53.34\00:01:56.28 to turn in them to the book of Galatians in the 00:01:56.31\00:02:00.25 New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 00:02:00.28\00:02:02.52 1 and 2 Corinthians and then Galatians. 00:02:02.55\00:02:04.59 Galatians 3:10, in Galatians 3:10 the apostle says, 00:02:04.65\00:02:09.69 "for as many as are of the works of the law are under 00:02:09.72\00:02:14.20 "the curse; for it is written, cursed is every one who 00:02:14.23\00:02:18.23 "does not continue in all things which are written in 00:02:18.27\00:02:22.24 "the book of the law, to do them. " 00:02:22.27\00:02:23.61 Now what is interesting here Jim, is that the initial 00:02:23.64\00:02:26.98 reading, as many as are the works of the law communicates 00:02:27.01\00:02:30.41 to our minds that oh those who are of the works of the 00:02:30.45\00:02:32.88 law, these are the people that think it's important to 00:02:32.91\00:02:35.32 keep the law. - right. 00:02:35.35\00:02:36.95 But we have talked about this in previous studies that 00:02:36.99\00:02:39.89 phrase, works of the law, or of the works of the law is 00:02:39.92\00:02:42.79 not saying that at all. 00:02:42.82\00:02:44.43 Those who are of the works of the law are those who are 00:02:44.46\00:02:47.36 seeking to be justified by law. 00:02:47.40\00:02:49.40 Not that they think the law of God is important, 00:02:49.43\00:02:52.83 but they think it is the means of justification. 00:02:52.87\00:02:56.24 Right and we have said that the law is not necessarily 00:02:56.27\00:02:59.31 how the text reads, but law in general. 00:02:59.34\00:03:01.91 By the works of law, so any system of righteousness 00:03:01.94\00:03:05.25 that they develop, it is not some specific code they 00:03:05.28\00:03:08.55 are trying to follow necessarily. 00:03:08.58\00:03:10.15 Any system of righteousness that they developed by 00:03:10.19\00:03:12.75 which they think they are going to merit justification. 00:03:12.79\00:03:15.82 That's right, and if we read in verse 10, I'm going to 00:03:15.86\00:03:18.89 read it how some people will read it initially. 00:03:18.93\00:03:21.10 For as many as are off the works of the law, or under the 00:03:21.13\00:03:25.30 cursed for it is written cursed is every one who continues 00:03:25.37\00:03:28.44 in all things which are written in the book of the law. 00:03:28.47\00:03:31.84 Or cursed is everyone who seeks to obey the law and that's 00:03:31.87\00:03:35.11 how people tend to read it but it's not what it says it all. 00:03:35.14\00:03:38.35 Notice the curses on those who do not continue. 00:03:38.38\00:03:42.45 "Cursed is every one who does not continue in all things 00:03:42.48\00:03:45.99 "which are written in the book of the law to do them. " 00:03:46.02\00:03:49.79 So there is a curse pronounced upon those who are of the 00:03:49.82\00:03:53.50 works of the law, these are the people who are not continuing 00:03:53.53\00:03:57.63 in the law, they are not obeying the law. 00:03:57.67\00:03:59.30 That's right and on the contrary then you go to verse 11 00:03:59.37\00:04:02.07 and it describes the other class and it says, 00:04:02.10\00:04:05.94 "but that no one is justified by the law in the sight 00:04:05.97\00:04:10.08 "of God is evident, for the just shall live by faith. " 00:04:10.11\00:04:14.08 And we talked last time that the only way to truly have 00:04:14.12\00:04:17.72 obedience, the kind of obedience where your heart is in 00:04:17.75\00:04:21.36 tune with the will of God. 00:04:21.39\00:04:23.06 Where you are submissive to God, where that humble 00:04:23.09\00:04:26.16 attitude of trust in God is evident, it's to have faith. 00:04:26.19\00:04:30.33 We look back at Romans 3:31 where it says, 00:04:30.37\00:04:34.20 "by faith we establish the law. " 00:04:34.24\00:04:36.91 So those who are of the works of law, they don't continue 00:04:36.94\00:04:40.61 in the things of the law. 00:04:40.64\00:04:42.14 Those who live by faith are just, that is they establish 00:04:42.18\00:04:47.62 the law. - that's right, by the grace of God. 00:04:47.65\00:04:49.98 It is the only way the law can be established in the 00:04:50.02\00:04:52.72 human heart and so this is where in verse 13 Paul says, 00:04:52.79\00:04:55.49 "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, 00:04:55.52\00:04:58.66 "having become a curse for us (for it is written, 00:04:58.69\00:05:01.96 "cursed is every one who hangs on a tree), that the 00:05:02.00\00:05:04.97 "blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in 00:05:05.00\00:05:07.54 "Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise 00:05:07.57\00:05:10.11 "of the Spirit through faith. " 00:05:10.14\00:05:12.14 So the point here that needs to be clear in our minds is 00:05:12.17\00:05:14.71 Christ did not come to redeem anybody from the law, 00:05:14.74\00:05:17.71 but from the curse of the law. - that's right! 00:05:17.75\00:05:20.28 The curse of the law is the curse against disobedience 00:05:20.32\00:05:23.79 or sin. - that's right, when you look at it, verse 13 00:05:23.82\00:05:27.52 tells us that Christ redeems us from the curse of the law 00:05:27.56\00:05:31.29 that is He redeem those from the curse of disobeying the 00:05:31.33\00:05:35.03 law by being crucified. 00:05:35.06\00:05:37.77 Because this is cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree. 00:05:37.80\00:05:41.64 So He took our guilt, our punishment for disobedience 00:05:41.67\00:05:45.47 to the law, in essence that's what it's saying. 00:05:45.51\00:05:47.91 Then in verse 14 it says, "that the blessing of Abraham 00:05:47.94\00:05:50.61 "might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we 00:05:50.65\00:05:53.28 "might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. " 00:05:53.31\00:05:56.38 First He redeems us from the curse of disobedience to the 00:05:56.42\00:06:00.12 law, then He gives us the Spirit which writes the law on 00:06:00.16\00:06:03.86 our hearts and He in essence gives us an obedient heart. 00:06:03.89\00:06:07.86 He dies for our disobedience and implants in our hearts 00:06:07.93\00:06:11.37 something that wasn't there before, a heart of obedience. 00:06:11.40\00:06:14.97 I think this is so important for our readers, our viewers 00:06:15.00\00:06:18.67 to grasp here, then again those who are of the works of 00:06:18.74\00:06:22.38 the law are the people who are not obeying God, 00:06:22.41\00:06:25.65 but who disobey because if man is attempting 00:06:25.68\00:06:28.85 in his own strength, to keep his own idea of right, 00:06:28.88\00:06:32.45 let me rephrase what I mean by that. 00:06:32.49\00:06:35.46 If I look at the law of God I deduce from it what is 00:06:35.49\00:06:39.79 right and what is wrong, I'm still only viewing it from 00:06:39.86\00:06:44.10 my limited understanding for example. 00:06:44.13\00:06:46.33 How many times have you thought you were living right, 00:06:46.37\00:06:49.57 or doing right or whatever and then you learn something 00:06:49.60\00:06:52.77 new that you didn't know before? 00:06:52.81\00:06:54.81 Lots of times. - yeah, so if I live up to my highest 00:06:54.84\00:06:58.25 conception of righteousness today, my highest ideal of 00:06:58.28\00:07:01.72 what is right, is that going to be right? 00:07:01.75\00:07:05.39 Not necessarily. -No! Tomorrow I might learn something 00:07:05.42\00:07:08.36 new and the next day something new. 00:07:08.39\00:07:09.82 So for man to think that he can even conceptualize 00:07:09.86\00:07:12.49 righteousness is a futility. 00:07:12.53\00:07:18.43 The Lord Himself only knows righteousness and that is 00:07:18.47\00:07:22.34 why the Bible says in Isaiah where the Lord talks about 00:07:22.37\00:07:25.71 those who know righteousness and He says the people in 00:07:25.74\00:07:29.01 whose heart is My law. 00:07:29.04\00:07:31.28 It's the only way to know true righteousness. 00:07:31.31\00:07:33.88 So those were the works of the law they are under the 00:07:33.92\00:07:36.85 curse, it can't be otherwise, you could never meet 00:07:36.89\00:07:39.79 the standard of God in human strength. 00:07:39.82\00:07:42.82 The greatest reason is because those who are seeking 00:07:42.86\00:07:46.96 to be justified by the works of the law are not 00:07:47.00\00:07:50.53 going to Christ for justification. 00:07:50.60\00:07:52.53 So they are not receiving a divine nature, all they have 00:07:52.57\00:07:55.84 to work with is the flesh, the selfish heart. 00:07:55.87\00:07:58.84 So they can do things but even the things they do are 00:07:58.91\00:08:01.24 going to be from a selfish motive. 00:08:01.28\00:08:03.18 They are probably only going to pick and choose certain 00:08:03.21\00:08:05.21 things because the reality is their heart is not 00:08:05.25\00:08:08.35 submissive as we read in Romans 8:7 where it says, 00:08:08.38\00:08:11.59 that our carnal mind, our sinful heart is not subject 00:08:11.62\00:08:14.79 to the law and it can't be made that way. 00:08:14.82\00:08:16.69 We have to have Christ to give us something from above 00:08:16.73\00:08:20.33 the Spirit of God even, to give us that humble spirit 00:08:20.36\00:08:23.87 that is willing to obey God. 00:08:23.90\00:08:25.33 That's right, and that is where the concept goes on as 00:08:25.37\00:08:28.84 Paul continues to talk and we are going to Galatians 3:16 00:08:28.87\00:08:32.31 and notice what he says here. 00:08:32.34\00:08:33.68 "Now to Abraham and his Seed where the promises made. " 00:08:33.71\00:08:37.71 "He does not say unto seeds as of many, but as of one, 00:08:37.75\00:08:41.95 "and to your Seed, who is Christ. " 00:08:41.98\00:08:43.92 We are going to talk more about the Seed of Abraham I 00:08:43.95\00:08:45.59 believe next time, but it says in verse 17, 00:08:45.65\00:08:48.49 "and this I say, that the law, which was 430 years later 00:08:48.52\00:08:52.23 "cannot annul the covenant" now it he's talking here 00:08:52.26\00:08:55.90 about the giving of the law, not just the 00:08:55.93\00:08:57.27 Ten Commandments, but also the ceremonial laws that 00:08:57.30\00:08:59.90 were given at Sinai and he was referring to that event. 00:08:59.93\00:09:03.54 He said that, "which was 430 years later can not annul 00:09:03.57\00:09:07.21 "the covenant that was confirmed before by God, in Christ, 00:09:07.24\00:09:10.81 "then it should make the promise of no effect. " 00:09:10.85\00:09:13.45 Now the point the apostle was trying to make here is 00:09:13.48\00:09:16.32 the same God who gave the promise of salvation in Christ, 00:09:16.35\00:09:20.79 gave the law, and I would ask those who have been 00:09:20.82\00:09:24.56 wrestling with this and thought about the law as still 00:09:24.59\00:09:27.40 binding upon Christians and should we still keep the 00:09:27.46\00:09:30.77 Ten Commandment law, the question to ask would be 00:09:30.83\00:09:34.10 because the thought that comes in here is didn't Jesus 00:09:34.14\00:09:37.27 did Jesus die so we can be free from a law? 00:09:37.31\00:09:40.48 We have talked about this before. 00:09:40.51\00:09:41.84 But we have to ask ourselves who was it who gave the 00:09:41.88\00:09:44.35 Ten Commandment law again? - it was God. 00:09:44.38\00:09:46.61 You know a dear friend of mine, Dan Griffin always said 00:09:46.65\00:09:49.92 that there is one word that God never uses, one word 00:09:49.95\00:09:53.19 God never says, and that word is oops! 00:09:53.22\00:09:55.29 - that's right. - God wasn't up there giving a law 00:09:55.32\00:09:58.46 and oops I made a mistake, I shouldn't have given that 00:09:58.49\00:10:01.86 law, so all the apostle is saying here is the same God 00:10:01.93\00:10:05.30 who gave salvation in His Son, Jesus Christ 00:10:05.33\00:10:08.20 also gave the law. 00:10:08.24\00:10:09.57 Well He wouldn't give us a law that contradicted 00:10:09.60\00:10:11.94 His own promise. - that's right! 00:10:12.01\00:10:13.58 So rather than the law being contradictory to salvation, 00:10:13.61\00:10:17.11 if we find ourselves as Christians battling on one side 00:10:17.15\00:10:20.95 of this issue verses another saying, I'm for the Gospel, 00:10:20.98\00:10:24.75 or I'm for the law we are mixed up. 00:10:24.79\00:10:27.39 The same God that gave law gave the Gospel. 00:10:27.42\00:10:30.26 The same God who gave the Gospel gave the law and they 00:10:30.29\00:10:32.59 are not working to counter purposes but are working 00:10:32.66\00:10:34.93 together. - you know that's right. 00:10:34.93\00:10:36.26 You know I think about when Jesus was talking to the 00:10:36.30\00:10:38.73 Pharisees and He said you tithed mint and anise and Cumin 00:10:38.77\00:10:42.84 but you neglect the weightier matters of the law. 00:10:42.87\00:10:45.41 Justice and mercy and faith. 00:10:45.44\00:10:47.64 A lot of people when they read Galatians, they think this 00:10:47.68\00:10:52.38 is really attacking these people who are so focused on 00:10:52.45\00:10:57.05 carefully obeying these rules and requirements, but the 00:10:57.09\00:11:00.86 reality is that we have to be careful not to throw the 00:11:00.89\00:11:04.53 baby out with the bath water. - that's right! 00:11:04.56\00:11:06.26 If you look at the example of Jesus He is saying it's 00:11:06.29\00:11:10.70 okay to pay this tithe but don't neglect 00:11:10.73\00:11:14.14 the weightier matters of law. 00:11:14.17\00:11:16.00 It is not obeying the law to keep these external requirements 00:11:16.04\00:11:21.38 if you are bitter and angry in your heart. 00:11:21.41\00:11:24.08 It is not obeying the law if you are critical of others 00:11:24.11\00:11:27.52 because they are not obeying the law. 00:11:27.55\00:11:29.22 That is not obeying the law. - that's right. 00:11:29.25\00:11:30.75 That is about all our stubborn or can do, that is not 00:11:30.79\00:11:33.12 obeying the law, we need something deeper. 00:11:33.15\00:11:35.92 Just because we need a more warm Spirit, just because 00:11:35.96\00:11:39.79 we need that mercy and compassion of God is no reason 00:11:39.83\00:11:43.30 to say because that is the weightier matter of the law 00:11:43.33\00:11:47.14 we don't need to do anything from an external observant 00:11:47.17\00:11:50.94 standpoint that God asked us to do. 00:11:50.97\00:11:52.54 We can't throw away the one to make room for the other. 00:11:52.57\00:11:55.68 We have to look at it as a perfect whole. 00:11:55.71\00:11:57.65 When you talk about throwing away this example comes to 00:11:57.68\00:12:01.15 mind, when Paul talks about the law he repeatedly says 00:12:01.18\00:12:04.55 that man can't be justified by the law. 00:12:04.59\00:12:07.09 By the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. 00:12:07.12\00:12:09.22 What that does is that it triggers the mine of some people 00:12:09.26\00:12:12.06 the idea that there is no purpose for the law. 00:12:12.09\00:12:13.90 For example, my wife and I received this beautiful ceramic 00:12:13.93\00:12:19.53 fruit bowl from some friends of ours that had went 00:12:19.57\00:12:22.00 overseas and brought this back. 00:12:22.04\00:12:23.54 So we have this beautiful fruit bowl on our counter at 00:12:23.57\00:12:27.44 home, now let's imagine one day I'm coming through the 00:12:27.48\00:12:30.35 kitchen and heading out to the garage and take that fruit 00:12:30.38\00:12:32.85 bowl, take the fruit out and began to walk out to the 00:12:32.88\00:12:35.32 garage and my wife says honey hold on a minute. 00:12:35.35\00:12:36.89 Where are you going with the fruit bowl? 00:12:36.92\00:12:39.19 Oh I'm just going out to change the oil. 00:12:39.22\00:12:41.42 She says you're doing what? I'm going to change the oil 00:12:41.46\00:12:46.06 don't worry I'll bring it back. 00:12:46.09\00:12:47.66 She says no you are not going anywhere to do any such 00:12:47.66\00:12:50.63 thing with that fruit bowl you put it right back here. 00:12:50.67\00:12:53.60 - I know Stephanie she wouldn't speak that way. 00:12:53.64\00:12:56.44 No, no she would speak that way but she might still say 00:12:56.50\00:12:59.81 that, so she says you are not going anywhere with that. 00:12:59.84\00:13:03.18 You can't change oil in that fruit bowl 00:13:03.21\00:13:06.78 that's not what it's for. 00:13:06.82\00:13:08.38 Let's imagine if my response is oh well if that's not 00:13:08.42\00:13:11.49 what it is for what good is it and I chuck the thing in 00:13:11.52\00:13:14.52 the trash can, that wouldn't go over real well. 00:13:14.59\00:13:17.69 Okay, I think you husbands at home can relate to that. 00:13:17.73\00:13:20.53 Here's the idea, that is the very thing that some 00:13:20.60\00:13:24.17 Christians do with the law of God. 00:13:24.20\00:13:26.23 When Paul says you can't justify, a law can't justify 00:13:26.27\00:13:29.07 they say what good is it in chuck it in the trash can. 00:13:29.10\00:13:32.34 The reality is, was there a purpose for that fruit bowl? 00:13:32.41\00:13:35.64 - yes there was. - absolutely. 00:13:35.68\00:13:37.35 There was a purpose it just wasn't for changing the oil. 00:13:37.38\00:13:39.78 There is a purpose for the law of God, it's simply not 00:13:39.81\00:13:42.52 to be justified with, but it does serve a purpose. 00:13:42.55\00:13:45.22 We are going to talk about that purpose well we come back 00:13:45.25\00:13:47.62 from our break, so stay tuned and stick with us. 00:13:47.66\00:13:51.56 When we come back we're going to talk about the purpose 00:13:51.63\00:13:53.56 of the law in the life of the Christian. 00:13:53.60\00:13:55.40
