Welcome back to Books of the Book. 00:00:05.47\00:00:07.57 We have been in the book of Galatians and we are studying 00:00:07.60\00:00:09.47 about the hearing of faith. 00:00:09.50\00:00:11.47 In Galatians 3 the apostle Paul talks about how the 00:00:11.51\00:00:15.21 Galatians had been obedient while they had the hearing of 00:00:15.24\00:00:18.38 faith but they turned from that to the works of the law. 00:00:18.45\00:00:21.55 Jim you had said before the break where you went to 00:00:21.58\00:00:26.76 Romans 23:23 where it's said the faith establishes a law. 00:00:26.79\00:00:30.53 Now I want us to look at an interesting passage in 00:00:30.59\00:00:32.86 the book of Romans 1:5. 00:00:32.89\00:00:36.20 It depends on which translation that you are reading 00:00:36.23\00:00:39.87 whether you will pick it up right away, but the language 00:00:39.90\00:00:42.97 of this is very interesting in the original language and 00:00:43.00\00:00:46.04 it is expressed in different versions. 00:00:46.11\00:00:47.74 I'm reading in the new King James Romans 1:5 and the 00:00:47.78\00:00:50.51 apostle Paul is talking about the Gospel of Christ and in 00:00:50.55\00:00:53.42 verse five he says, "through him" speaking of Jesus, 00:00:53.45\00:00:55.95 " we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to 00:00:55.98\00:01:00.52 "the faith among all nations for His name, among whom 00:01:00.56\00:01:04.76 "you also are the called of Jesus Christ;" and he goes on. 00:01:04.79\00:01:08.90 Now what this translation does not bring out, 00:01:08.93\00:01:12.33 but for example if you were to read it in the King James 00:01:12.37\00:01:16.27 Version or in the English Standard Version for example 00:01:16.30\00:01:20.14 it says, "for the obedience of faith. " 00:01:20.18\00:01:24.88 The NIV says, the NIV actually says, 00:01:24.95\00:01:29.58 the obedience that comes from faith, and that is 00:01:29.62\00:01:33.32 the sense that is given in the original. 00:01:33.36\00:01:34.69 So the idea being conveyed from the apostle there is 00:01:34.72\00:01:40.00 that obedience is a result of faith, that actually faith 00:01:40.03\00:01:45.27 exercising your faith is obedience. 00:01:45.30\00:01:48.44 Obedience is simply the exercise of faith. 00:01:48.47\00:01:50.11 Right, so obedience is evidence of faith, true obedience 00:01:50.14\00:01:53.07 that goes from the inside and finds its way into your 00:01:53.11\00:01:55.51 outer life. - that's right it is true there is an 00:01:55.58\00:01:57.88 outward obedience that you can render from the heart of 00:01:57.95\00:02:00.65 Bible faith is a living principle in the life 00:02:00.68\00:02:04.85 of a Christian that responds to God. 00:02:04.89\00:02:07.92 That is right, that is right Amen. 00:02:07.96\00:02:10.96 Well it makes me think about, when you talk about the 00:02:10.99\00:02:14.40 hearing of faith in Romans chapter 10. 00:02:14.46\00:02:16.93 Because in Romans 10:17 it says "that faith comes by 00:02:17.00\00:02:20.50 "hearing and hearing by the word of God. " 00:02:20.54\00:02:24.07 The component of faith that we need to remember is that 00:02:24.14\00:02:27.44 a lot of talk about how I have faith. 00:02:27.48\00:02:29.41 I'm a person of faith, but if we just have faith meaning 00:02:29.48\00:02:33.92 we believe certain things about God, if we do certain 00:02:33.95\00:02:37.19 things because we think it is what would be the right 00:02:37.22\00:02:40.42 thing to do, that is not necessarily faith. 00:02:40.46\00:02:42.69 Faith is responding to the word and if we want faith 00:02:42.72\00:02:46.53 we have to be in the word. 00:02:46.56\00:02:48.26 We have to understand the word, to see the God that is 00:02:48.30\00:02:51.87 revealed through the word and that is ultimately what 00:02:51.90\00:02:55.44 gives us the faith. 00:02:55.47\00:02:57.71 Faith exercised it's believing in the promises of God 00:02:57.74\00:03:01.18 and responding to them. 00:03:01.21\00:03:02.54 Now there is another aspect of faith that we need to 00:03:02.58\00:03:04.75 look at too and I thought maybe we can look at it in 00:03:04.78\00:03:09.52 Hebrews 11:6 it says something very interesting about 00:03:09.55\00:03:14.19 Faith. It says, "but without faith it is impossible 00:03:14.22\00:03:18.76 to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that 00:03:18.79\00:03:22.80 He is, and that He is a rewarder of those of 00:03:22.83\00:03:26.47 who diligently seek Him. " 00:03:26.50\00:03:28.17 Now this is a very powerful verse that helps us to 00:03:28.20\00:03:33.27 understand that God wants us to diligently seek Him. 00:03:33.31\00:03:38.35 If we diligently seek Him, He will reward us. 00:03:38.38\00:03:42.42 Faith is believing that God will reward you when 00:03:42.45\00:03:46.32 you diligently seek Him, not halfheartedly but if 00:03:46.35\00:03:49.86 we put our heart into it, that is what faith requires 00:03:49.89\00:03:53.36 then we will find Him. 00:03:53.43\00:03:54.96 You do remember Jeremiah says that. 00:03:55.00\00:03:57.70 If you seek Me you will find Me when you search for Me 00:03:57.73\00:04:00.37 with all your heart. 00:04:00.40\00:04:01.77 So we have to recognize that faith isn't something that 00:04:01.80\00:04:04.17 just comes easy or naturally per se. 00:04:04.21\00:04:07.61 Faith always has obstacles, in fact if something is 00:04:07.64\00:04:11.58 humanly possible and seems very easy humanly, 00:04:11.61\00:04:14.62 it doesn't require faith. 00:04:14.65\00:04:16.12 Faith is always something that we have a principle 00:04:16.15\00:04:19.29 that overcomes obstacles. 00:04:19.35\00:04:21.99 Faith is believing that God can overcome the 00:04:22.02\00:04:24.93 impossibilities of life and the reality Jim is that 00:04:24.96\00:04:28.33 faith only exist in the realm of the impossible. 00:04:28.36\00:04:31.70 If you are in the realm of the possible what is faith 00:04:31.73\00:04:34.77 needed for? You could see everything but the Bible says 00:04:34.84\00:04:37.94 we walk by faith and not by sight, it contrasts the two. 00:04:37.97\00:04:41.48 So faith is dependent on those impossible situations and 00:04:41.51\00:04:44.45 the problem I think is that there are too many Christians 00:04:44.48\00:04:47.38 who want to live in the realm of the possible. 00:04:47.42\00:04:49.98 That is where we find the rub with the law of God because 00:04:50.05\00:04:53.22 when you put the law of God is an impossibility for man, 00:04:53.25\00:04:56.69 unless he has the power of God, and it becomes a rub for 00:04:56.73\00:05:00.16 those who do not want to receive that new birth 00:05:00.20\00:05:03.77 experience. They want to have their proverbial cake 00:05:03.80\00:05:06.84 and eat it too. 00:05:06.87\00:05:08.20 If I might say it, what they are doing is they are 00:05:08.24\00:05:12.11 living in, what we call, a comfort zone. 00:05:12.14\00:05:14.04 So many Christians they live in a comfort zone even though 00:05:14.08\00:05:18.41 God may be calling them to this variety of areas, 00:05:18.45\00:05:21.78 if they have weaknesses in these areas they will avoid 00:05:21.82\00:05:23.85 them and stay within their comfort zone. 00:05:23.89\00:05:26.35 That is what the works of the law also mentally does. 00:05:26.39\00:05:28.72 It causes us to feel confident in that we are okay with 00:05:28.76\00:05:31.03 this and that substitutes for that. 00:05:31.09\00:05:33.80 So we need to be able to see that those impossible areas 00:05:33.83\00:05:37.37 that God is calling us in, those are the ones that 00:05:37.40\00:05:40.20 test and require faith. 00:05:40.24\00:05:42.57 I can think of some Bible examples when you really look 00:05:42.60\00:05:45.34 at the life of Christ you see it full of examples of 00:05:45.37\00:05:48.11 living faith and I'm thinking of one right now 00:05:48.14\00:05:51.48 with the paralytic. 00:05:51.51\00:05:53.05 You remember there was a paralytic where four friends 00:05:53.08\00:05:56.45 took him to Jesus for him to be healed. 00:05:56.48\00:05:59.35 When they got to the house where Jesus was, it was full 00:05:59.39\00:06:03.43 of people, there was the obstacle. 00:06:03.46\00:06:05.73 They could have just turned around and gone home, 00:06:05.76\00:06:07.96 but they climbed up on the Roof, they tore up the tiles, 00:06:08.03\00:06:12.97 sounds pretty radical. 00:06:13.00\00:06:14.77 They tore the tiles of the roof and they lowered 00:06:14.80\00:06:17.54 him down and the Bible said when Jesus saw their faith, 00:06:17.57\00:06:21.94 how was it that He saw their faith? 00:06:21.98\00:06:23.71 Jesus saw that they had such confidence in Him that they 00:06:23.75\00:06:27.58 were not going to let any obstacle stand in their way. 00:06:27.62\00:06:31.39 They were going to go straight to Jesus. 00:06:31.42\00:06:32.95 Then there is the story that comes to mind of blind 00:06:32.99\00:06:34.92 Bartimaeus, here is a man who was on the side of the road 00:06:34.96\00:06:37.73 and he is crying out, he hears Jesus coming his way. 00:06:37.76\00:06:41.06 He said son of David have mercy on me and the crowd 00:06:41.10\00:06:44.43 tells him to pipe down. 00:06:44.47\00:06:45.80 The Christian crowd tells him to pipe down because he is 00:06:45.83\00:06:49.27 making too much noise and so there you have the obstacle. 00:06:49.30\00:06:52.24 Here he is a blind man and he doesn't know how to get 00:06:52.27\00:06:55.14 to where he is going. 00:06:55.18\00:06:56.51 He has this crowd milling around, but when they tell him 00:06:56.54\00:06:58.31 to be quiet the Bible says he cries all the more. 00:06:58.35\00:07:02.92 When he cried all the more and pushed beyond that barrier 00:07:02.95\00:07:06.45 then we see his Faith rewarded in Jesus and He heals him. 00:07:06.49\00:07:09.99 We see a similar story with Zacchaeus. 00:07:10.03\00:07:12.03 Zacchaeus wants to see Jesus and the Christian crowd 00:07:12.09\00:07:15.53 around Jesus was too tall and some people say it is 00:07:15.56\00:07:18.50 Zacchaeus could not see Jesus and so what does he do? 00:07:18.53\00:07:20.87 - he could have gone home. - he could have gone home 00:07:20.90\00:07:23.07 it said there was no way I will ever be able to make it 00:07:23.10\00:07:26.04 to Jesus, but instead he presses through and goes ahead 00:07:26.07\00:07:29.38 actually gets himself up in a tree so he could just 00:07:29.41\00:07:32.68 happen to see Jesus come by. 00:07:32.71\00:07:34.68 And Jesus sees his act of faith and calls him down and 00:07:34.72\00:07:38.65 says this day salvation has come to your house. 00:07:38.69\00:07:41.52 Amen, I can think of the story to a woman who had a flow 00:07:41.56\00:07:46.73 of blood, for all she had she tried to find healing. 00:07:46.76\00:07:51.87 She went to every physician she could find and 00:07:51.90\00:07:54.27 she spent all her livelihood and still nothing. 00:07:54.30\00:07:56.50 Well she heard that Jesus was coming through town. 00:07:56.54\00:07:59.61 Jesus was her only hope and she went to see Jesus and 00:07:59.64\00:08:02.74 guess what she ran into? An obstacle! 00:08:02.78\00:08:04.85 The crowd was too big and she couldn't get to Him. 00:08:04.88\00:08:07.55 She thought to herself if I can only fight through and 00:08:07.58\00:08:10.22 reach the hem of His garment I will be healed. 00:08:10.25\00:08:12.62 So she reaches the end and grabs the hem of His garment 00:08:12.65\00:08:14.86 and Jesus stops on the spot and He says, 00:08:14.89\00:08:17.39 who touched Me? Of course the disciples were like 00:08:17.43\00:08:20.23 what are you talking about? Everybody's touching and 00:08:20.26\00:08:23.03 they are bumping up against you. 00:08:23.06\00:08:25.37 He said no I perceived virtue gone out for Me. 00:08:25.40\00:08:29.14 Who touched Me? That is a real good lesson for us. 00:08:29.17\00:08:32.81 If we have a casual experience where we just bump up next to 00:08:32.84\00:08:37.71 Jesus, we go to church and put in our time but we are not in 00:08:37.75\00:08:42.55 earnest and not we're not wholehearted like that woman. 00:08:42.58\00:08:46.25 If we do not have that kind of faith, then Jesus doesn't 00:08:46.29\00:08:50.03 recognize it, Jesus knows the difference between an 00:08:50.06\00:08:53.76 intentional wholehearted faith, a casual halfhearted experience. 00:08:53.80\00:08:58.50 That is absolutely true and it reminds me that we all face 00:08:58.53\00:09:02.20 those situations where if we truly give ourselves to Christ 00:09:02.24\00:09:05.41 we face obstacles, sometimes they are impractical situations. 00:09:05.44\00:09:08.58 I remember when I first became a Christian. 00:09:08.61\00:09:11.35 The Holy Spirit came to my heart and convicted me of something 00:09:11.38\00:09:15.12 I had stole from my employer prior to becoming a Christian. 00:09:15.15\00:09:18.39 I was convicted that I needed to go and tell my employer and 00:09:18.45\00:09:22.62 I was so petrified because it was a fairly expensive item and 00:09:22.66\00:09:26.80 I could lose my job and I knew I'd lose my job. 00:09:26.83\00:09:28.70 And I thought Lord, this was before I was a Christian 00:09:28.73\00:09:30.57 I confessed all that, I'm newborn, why couldn't 00:09:30.60\00:09:33.10 I've done it before, now it is going to ruin my witness 00:09:33.13\00:09:36.34 in all these things but the conviction was there. 00:09:36.37\00:09:38.94 I knew it was something I had to go and make it right, 00:09:38.97\00:09:41.91 despite the obstacle and I'll tell you what, when I did. 00:09:41.94\00:09:44.81 I went and talked my employer about that thing because I knew 00:09:44.85\00:09:47.62 it was the right thing to do and I did it for the sake of the 00:09:47.65\00:09:50.42 Lord that I gave my life to. 00:09:50.45\00:09:52.42 God worked that out with my employer, not only did I not 00:09:52.45\00:09:56.62 lose my job but he was impressed with the level of 00:09:56.66\00:10:01.23 integrity that he saw from me willing to able to something 00:10:01.26\00:10:04.50 because I had gotten away with it. 00:10:04.53\00:10:06.10 So at any rate I had fought, I had seen the obstacles and 00:10:06.13\00:10:10.37 made them bigger than they really were, but the Lord 00:10:10.41\00:10:12.77 carried me through when I exercised faith. 00:10:12.81\00:10:14.81 He compelled you by His grace and you had turmoil but when 00:10:14.84\00:10:19.08 you received His grace by faith you received peace. 00:10:19.11\00:10:22.78 Grace and peace is in harmony with God and there is nothing 00:10:22.82\00:10:26.35 like overcoming that sin or obstacle and finding peace. 00:10:26.39\00:10:29.22 There may be somebody watching today, and you have got 00:10:29.26\00:10:31.83 something that you know God is calling on you to do. 00:10:31.86\00:10:34.36 But you are struggling with how you are ever going to do it. 00:10:34.36\00:10:37.57 Perhaps you learned you should return a faithful tithe to God. 00:10:37.63\00:10:40.80 You are thinking to yourself I have expenses and 00:10:40.84\00:10:43.94 there is no way I can overcome. 00:10:43.97\00:10:45.61 I have a family situation that requires more than I can do. 00:10:45.64\00:10:49.98 You are thinking that would be impossible, that is when faith 00:10:50.01\00:10:54.28 comes in, faith is not needed for that which is easy. 00:10:54.32\00:10:57.49 Faith is only needed for that which is seemingly impossible. 00:10:57.52\00:11:01.86 So God is calling on us to be faithful, to obey when it seems 00:11:01.89\00:11:06.09 impossible and that is the exercise of faith. 00:11:06.13\00:11:08.66 To obey and trust God when it seems impossible. 00:11:08.70\00:11:11.20 There could be somebody who has learned that the Seventh 00:11:11.23\00:11:14.34 Day Sabbath is something that is still valid for Christians. 00:11:14.37\00:11:17.44 They are thinking but I've got this work situation 00:11:17.47\00:11:19.91 I have to figure out. 00:11:19.94\00:11:21.41 I have too many barriers that couldn't possibly be 00:11:21.48\00:11:26.75 overcome, the same situation, faith is when we trust that if 00:11:26.78\00:11:31.22 God is asking us to do it. God will honor us if we honor Him. 00:11:31.25\00:11:36.09 If we obey God He will honor us. 00:11:36.12\00:11:39.16 That is right and we could go to Hebrews chapter 11, the faith. 00:11:39.19\00:11:42.66 Chapter and one fascinating thing about it is over and 00:11:42.70\00:11:46.10 over, I'll give you a few examples Hebrews 11:8. 00:11:46.13\00:11:48.50 It says, "by faith Abraham obeyed. " 00:11:48.54\00:11:51.47 You go ahead to verse 17 and it says, 00:11:51.51\00:11:54.38 "by faith Abraham - offered up his son Isaac.
