Welcome to another episode of Books of the Book. 00:00:22.38\00:00:25.29 My name is Pastor Mark Howard I am the director of 00:00:25.32\00:00:28.06 the Emmanuel Institute of Evangelism in Michigan. 00:00:28.09\00:00:30.63 For the Michigan Conference Seventh-day Adventist 00:00:30.66\00:00:32.76 as well as the Pastor of the Gobels Seventh-day 00:00:32.79\00:00:34.76 Adventist church and I am here with my co-host, 00:00:34.83\00:00:36.73 my brother Jim. 00:00:36.77\00:00:38.17 Hi my name is Jim Howard and I am the Pastor of the 00:00:38.20\00:00:40.70 Detroit Metropolitan and South Lyon Seventh-day 00:00:40.74\00:00:42.77 Adventist churches and I'm glad to be here. 00:00:42.80\00:00:44.81 Will we have been studying in the book of Galatians 00:00:44.84\00:00:48.28 and what is happening here is that this church in 00:00:48.31\00:00:51.31 Galatia is a church of the apostle Paul raised up 00:00:51.35\00:00:54.35 and somebody else came in and began to preach a false 00:00:54.38\00:00:57.72 Gospel that really turned the church upside down. 00:00:57.75\00:01:00.89 The apostle has come in to address the situation. 00:01:00.92\00:01:03.99 We are in Galatians Chapter 3 today and we are going 00:01:04.03\00:01:06.80 to begin there Galatians to 3:1 so if you have your 00:01:06.83\00:01:09.16 Bibles I would encourage you to jump in here with us. 00:01:09.20\00:01:12.03 The New Testament after the Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, 00:01:12.07\00:01:15.47 John, Acts, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, and then Galatians. 00:01:15.50\00:01:18.84 Galatians 3:1 and the apostle starts out here and says, 00:01:18.91\00:01:24.45 "O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you 00:01:24.48\00:01:29.08 "should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus 00:01:29.12\00:01:32.95 "Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? 00:01:33.02\00:01:36.69 "This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive 00:01:36.73\00:01:39.86 "the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing 00:01:39.89\00:01:43.37 "of faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the 00:01:43.40\00:01:47.07 "Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? 00:01:47.10\00:01:50.24 "Have you suffered so many things in vain? if indeed 00:01:50.27\00:01:53.44 "it was in vain? Therefore he who supplies the Spirit 00:01:53.48\00:01:56.64 "to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by 00:01:56.68\00:01:59.85 "the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 00:01:59.88\00:02:02.85 just as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to 00:02:02.88\00:02:05.75 "him for righteousness. " 00:02:05.79\00:02:07.16 Not something we want to grasp here which is 00:02:07.19\00:02:09.79 interesting Jim, he brings it up 2 times. 00:02:09.82\00:02:12.33 This problem in Galatia came in, in what he calls the 00:02:12.39\00:02:20.20 hearing of faith was interrupted. 00:02:20.24\00:02:21.87 In verse 1 there it says, that they had obeyed the truth 00:02:21.90\00:02:26.94 but they had stopped obeying the truths when the hearing 00:02:26.98\00:02:31.98 of faith had stopped. 00:02:32.05\00:02:33.72 - they had switched to the works of law 00:02:33.75\00:02:35.48 as a means of justification. 00:02:35.52\00:02:36.85 I know for our viewers, if our viewers are reading 00:02:36.89\00:02:38.49 in the New King James Version, but if you are reading 00:02:38.52\00:02:40.52 in a version like the English Standard Version, the 00:02:40.59\00:02:42.79 New International Version, or some others it cuts off 00:02:42.82\00:02:45.99 that last part where it will read basically who has 00:02:46.03\00:02:49.13 bewitched you and it doesn't say you should not obey the truth. 00:02:49.16\00:02:53.07 So we picked the same idea up in Galatians 5 where the 00:02:53.10\00:02:56.44 apostle makes the same point again as it is in that 00:02:56.47\00:02:59.77 translation or those translations I mentioned. 00:02:59.81\00:03:03.14 Galatians 5:7 notice what he says, "you ran well. " 00:03:03.18\00:03:06.51 Past tense. You had been faithful, you ran well, but 00:03:06.55\00:03:10.35 he says, "who hindered you from obeying the truth?" 00:03:10.39\00:03:13.79 So the point were wanting to pick up on here is there 00:03:13.82\00:03:17.23 is something about this hearing of faith. 00:03:17.26\00:03:19.29 We are going to be talking about this today about what 00:03:19.33\00:03:20.93 the hearing of faith is. 00:03:20.96\00:03:22.36 While the people possess the hearing of faith, they were 00:03:22.40\00:03:26.80 obedient to the truth. 00:03:26.87\00:03:28.20 But when they lost the hearing of faith and began to turn 00:03:28.24\00:03:32.21 to the works of the law, they actually became disobedient. 00:03:32.24\00:03:35.71 Which is interesting. - it's just the opposite of what 00:03:35.74\00:03:38.21 you would think because when you think about the works of 00:03:38.28\00:03:42.15 the law, you think law, obedience and you think of the 00:03:42.18\00:03:45.59 focus not on faith but on obedience. - that's right! 00:03:45.62\00:03:48.96 The reality is that according to the epistle of Galatians 00:03:48.99\00:03:52.69 when they began to focus on the works of the law as a 00:03:52.73\00:03:56.36 means of justification, what they did was stop obeying 00:03:56.40\00:04:01.20 the truth and this really is not that surprising when you 00:04:01.24\00:04:05.97 read the other epistles of the apostle Paul. 00:04:06.01\00:04:08.11 He draws it out in other places. 00:04:08.14\00:04:09.81 I would like to point to one of them and it is in 00:04:09.84\00:04:11.65 Romans 10:1 he brings up this same point and it starts 00:04:11.68\00:04:17.89 this way, "brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God 00:04:17.92\00:04:22.72 "for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them 00:04:22.76\00:04:27.56 "witness that they have a zeal for God, 00:04:27.60\00:04:29.50 "but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant 00:04:29.53\00:04:33.00 "of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their 00:04:33.03\00:04:36.50 "own righteousness, have not submitted to the 00:04:36.54\00:04:40.31 "righteousness of God. " 00:04:40.34\00:04:42.24 So they were establishing their own righteousness and 00:04:42.28\00:04:46.82 it was a way for them to not submit to the righteousness 00:04:46.88\00:04:51.39 of God, so in many cases. - there was an obedience 00:04:51.42\00:04:54.99 it was actually a substitute for obedience. 00:04:55.02\00:04:57.26 Yeah, it was an obedience to a standard that they had 00:04:57.29\00:05:00.50 set up and they are the ones who determined what was 00:05:00.53\00:05:03.57 important and what wasn't instead of trusting what God 00:05:03.60\00:05:06.63 said was important and what wasn't. 00:05:06.67\00:05:08.30 That reminds me of another example in the Old Testament 00:05:08.34\00:05:12.21 Scripture in 1 Samuel during the reign of Israel's first 00:05:12.24\00:05:17.48 King Saul 1 Samuel 15, Saul had a habit of doing that 00:05:17.51\00:05:21.15 very thing of substituting his own standard for God's 00:05:21.18\00:05:24.82 standard and thinking that would answer to the obedience 00:05:24.85\00:05:28.46 that God was looking for. 00:05:28.49\00:05:29.82 1 Samuel 15:22, Samuel had to address Saul, God had commanded 00:05:29.86\00:05:36.97 Saul through the prophet Samuel that he was to go 00:05:37.00\00:05:39.87 against his enemies and he was going to the Amalekites 00:05:39.90\00:05:44.71 to war against them and to leave no one alive. 00:05:44.74\00:05:49.38 It was an idolatrous nation and they were not to take 00:05:49.41\00:05:53.62 any spoils, it was customary in those days to capture the 00:05:53.65\00:05:57.82 foreign king because then you could take glory to 00:05:57.85\00:05:59.92 yourself because you conquered that king, 00:05:59.95\00:06:01.56 but God said leave nothing. 00:06:01.59\00:06:03.69 Well Saul comes back from that battle and he brings the 00:06:03.76\00:06:08.86 livestock with him and brings the King with him. 00:06:08.90\00:06:12.37 He feels like he has done what God has commanded him. 00:06:12.40\00:06:17.57 So Samuel addresses him here as he sees this and he says, 00:06:17.61\00:06:22.48 In 22, "has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings 00:06:22.54\00:06:27.38 "and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the Lord? 00:06:27.42\00:06:31.65 "Behold to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed 00:06:31.69\00:06:36.69 "then the fat of rams. For rebellion is the sin of 00:06:36.73\00:06:40.76 "witchcraft," and if you are reading along at home 00:06:40.80\00:06:44.77 you'll notice that 'as' is italicized. 00:06:44.80\00:06:47.67 That means it is not there in the original. 00:06:47.74\00:06:50.04 It would originally read like this, 00:06:50.07\00:06:52.54 rebellion is the sin of witchcraft. 00:06:52.57\00:06:54.94 He says who has bewitched you? The issue is the exact 00:06:54.98\00:07:01.92 same thing, Saul instead of obeying the voice of the Lord 00:07:01.95\00:07:07.62 was making certain personal sacrifices and obeying in 00:07:07.66\00:07:11.69 some areas instead of rendering a full obedience. 00:07:11.73\00:07:15.70 He was setting his own standard up. 00:07:15.73\00:07:17.07 You could say Saul was here seeking justification by the 00:07:17.10\00:07:22.64 works of the law, he was coming up with his own 00:07:22.67\00:07:25.44 idea and as long as he did what he felt was the most 00:07:25.47\00:07:28.44 important stuff that God was asking him to do, it was 00:07:28.48\00:07:31.41 okay if he weaved in a little bit of his own. 00:07:31.45\00:07:33.65 Really when we look at this situation we find that 00:07:33.68\00:07:38.19 sometimes we can set certain things that we do that 00:07:38.22\00:07:41.92 we are comfortable doing and we are okay with doing, 00:07:41.96\00:07:46.06 and those become what we feel is most important because 00:07:46.09\00:07:50.13 we are okay with them. 00:07:50.17\00:07:51.50 By doing that it becomes a substitute for obedience with 00:07:51.53\00:07:55.44 our whole heart and our whole life and that is exactly 00:07:55.47\00:07:59.41 what happened back in Galatia. 00:07:59.44\00:08:01.01 Circumcision became a substitute for obedience. 00:08:01.04\00:08:05.31 That's right and people think of it as the opposite. 00:08:05.35\00:08:09.02 They said no circumcision was obedience, but it was only 00:08:09.05\00:08:12.65 obedience in the context of a heart that was surrender to God, 00:08:12.69\00:08:17.19 where the flesh of the heart was cut away right before. 00:08:17.23\00:08:20.23 That's right, if you look at it Paul was not doing what 00:08:20.26\00:08:23.43 so many today would say he is all you really need to do 00:08:23.47\00:08:27.00 is believe, and this whole idea of circumcision, law, 00:08:27.04\00:08:30.57 that is unimportant you just need to believe. 00:08:30.61\00:08:33.11 Let's be honest about this, if the apostle Paul was 00:08:33.14\00:08:36.31 giving you the option, or if you have the option 00:08:36.34\00:08:39.45 to either just believe and that is all 00:08:39.51\00:08:42.42 you have to do, or be circumcised. 00:08:42.45\00:08:45.29 Which would be the easier route? Well just believe. 00:08:45.32\00:08:49.59 Circumcision was not exactly a pleasant experience to go 00:08:49.62\00:08:52.16 through. - not at all is specially in a day that 00:08:52.19\00:08:54.36 didn't employ a lot of anesthesia or anything else. 00:08:54.40\00:08:56.97 That's right, so clearly Paul was not giving a just 00:08:57.00\00:09:00.40 believe Gospel, he was a gospel that called on them to 00:09:00.44\00:09:03.74 do more than just render this external obedience. 00:09:03.77\00:09:07.18 And let's just clarify because I know there will be some 00:09:07.21\00:09:09.48 who will say my Bible says he says just believe in the 00:09:09.51\00:09:11.71 Lord Jesus Christ. What we mean by a 00:09:11.75\00:09:13.35 just believe Gospel is not what Paul means when he says 00:09:13.38\00:09:16.45 he believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. 00:09:16.48\00:09:18.62 This is what we are greatly talking about in the rest of 00:09:18.65\00:09:20.96 our time here, but we are addressing a belief that 00:09:20.99\00:09:24.73 excludes obedience and that is not a biblical teaching. 00:09:24.76\00:09:28.20 We are going to see that very clearly. 00:09:28.23\00:09:29.70 The fact is you are saying here this is something we see 00:09:29.73\00:09:32.73 repeated in the history of Israel. 00:09:32.77\00:09:34.10 I'm thinking about Matthew 23 and the religion of the 00:09:34.14\00:09:37.07 Pharisees and it says in Matthew 23:23. 00:09:37.11\00:09:41.54 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" 00:09:41.58\00:09:45.18 Now that word hypocrite comes from a Greek word that 00:09:45.21\00:09:48.62 means an actor or a stage player, you guys are actors, 00:09:48.65\00:09:52.02 you are pretenders that your religion. 00:09:52.05\00:09:54.66 "Hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and 00:09:54.72\00:09:59.26 Cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the 00:09:59.29\00:10:03.57 law: Justice and Mercy and faith. These you ought to 00:10:03.60\00:10:07.87 have done, without leaving the others undone. 00:10:07.90\00:10:10.81 Jesus didn't have any problem that they were paying these 00:10:10.84\00:10:15.21 tithes on these very minute herbs, very small herbs. 00:10:15.24\00:10:18.08 They were very particular, Jesus never condemned the 00:10:18.15\00:10:21.75 Pharisees for being a particular, what the problem was 00:10:21.78\00:10:25.42 is that they were over do certain areas of obedience 00:10:25.45\00:10:28.99 to compensate for what they didn't want to do. So for 00:10:29.02\00:10:32.43 example if they didn't want to obey in one area they 00:10:32.46\00:10:35.46 would figure well, I'll go to church twice a week. 00:10:35.50\00:10:37.67 - then they added their own laws to that to make it 00:10:37.70\00:10:40.67 okay. - if I'm with my neighbor's wife but I will go 00:10:40.70\00:10:43.97 to church more often and pay more money and that may 00:10:44.01\00:10:47.28 sound crazy but we do that very thing today. 00:10:47.31\00:10:50.05 That's what the Galatianism was, we substitute what we 00:10:50.08\00:10:54.52 feel is obedience instead of rendering obedience in 00:10:54.58\00:10:57.92 those areas we just don't want to render obedience in. 00:10:57.95\00:11:00.76 I think you hit the point which is where you want to 00:11:00.79\00:11:03.46 and where you don't want to. 00:11:03.49\00:11:04.93 I'm mean obviously you are not going to create a standard 00:11:04.96\00:11:07.66 of righteousness, or what you believe is important around 00:11:07.66\00:11:10.30 things that you do not feel comfortable doing. 00:11:10.33\00:11:12.63 You end up choosing, if you feel comfortable with that, 00:11:12.70\00:11:14.70 that becomes important and the other things well 00:11:14.74\00:11:17.37 at least you are doing these so why do I need to do these? 00:11:17.41\00:11:19.54 He reminds me of what we talked about in our last episode 00:11:19.61\00:11:21.71 where we brought up Cain and Abel. 00:11:21.74\00:11:24.38 Cain and Abel were both worshiping God, they were both 00:11:24.41\00:11:28.48 many things that God had asked. Cain did not do 00:11:28.52\00:11:32.52 everything that God had asked because he felt 00:11:32.55\00:11:35.02 I'm already doing these other things and just because 00:11:35.09\00:11:37.99 I don't bring the lamb that God asked for 00:11:38.03\00:11:40.76 I am worshiping God, I am doing these other things. 00:11:40.80\00:11:44.20 He didn't truly sense that he had a need and he needed 00:11:44.23\00:11:47.64 to trust what God was telling him. 00:11:47.67\00:11:49.50 He had too much confidence in himself. 00:11:49.54\00:11:51.31 That is right and he really wasn't obeying God. 00:11:51.34\00:11:53.84 - that is the point I wanted to make because most 00:11:53.88\00:11:57.21 Christians typically assume right off the bat the 00:11:57.25\00:12:00.62 Pharisees their big thing was obedience. 00:12:00.65\00:12:03.92 But it is really interesting if we go to John 7 and ask 00:12:03.99\00:12:11.36 the question of people, 00:12:11.39\00:12:13.70 Who was more obedient Jesus or the Pharisees? 00:12:13.73\00:12:17.70 Which Jesus or the Pharisees? It is hard for people 00:12:17.73\00:12:22.70 to answer right away, here is how I worded it, 00:12:22.74\00:12:25.54 lets ask it that way. 00:12:25.57\00:12:28.38 Who was more strict in their observance of the law, 00:12:28.41\00:12:30.45 Jesus or the Pharisees? 00:12:30.48\00:12:32.41 Oh, the answer is the Pharisees were. 00:12:32.45\00:12:34.28 But if you come to John chapter 7 and the words of Jesus 00:12:34.32\00:12:37.32 himself in John 7:19 Jesus said to the Pharisees, 00:12:37.35\00:12:40.02 "did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps 00:12:40.06\00:12:44.46 the law?" And yet if we go to John 15 where Jesus speaks 00:12:44.49\00:12:48.86 Himself as he sits in John 15:10, "if you keep my 00:12:48.90\00:12:53.90 commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have 00:12:53.94\00:12:57.01 kept my Father's commandments and abide in His love. 00:12:57.04\00:12:59.71 Now the point to be understood is, but Pharisees were 00:12:59.74\00:13:02.48 not obedient to the law of God. 00:13:02.51\00:13:03.95 They were obedient to their concept of law God which was 00:13:03.98\00:13:06.95 vastly different, they were obedient to their own 00:13:06.98\00:13:09.42 standard that they had set up. 00:13:09.45\00:13:11.12 They were picking and choosing what they were 00:13:11.15\00:13:13.12 comfortable with and leave in undone because 00:13:13.15\00:13:15.06 they were feeling they were all right because 00:13:15.09\00:13:16.96 they had tipped the scales as it were. 00:13:16.99\00:13:19.46 So when we are talking about obedience we're talking about 00:13:19.49\00:13:23.16 a heart obedience that God is calling for. 00:13:23.23\00:13:26.03 One more point that I would like to add into that is 00:13:26.07\00:13:29.14 when it talks in Galatians about this justification 00:13:29.17\00:13:32.21 that doesn't come by the works of the law 00:13:32.24\00:13:35.38 but by hearing a faith. 00:13:35.41\00:13:37.25 We remember that in Romans 3:31 it says by faith we 00:13:37.28\00:13:41.48 established law so the only way to truly have obedience 00:13:41.52\00:13:45.72 is through faith, the works of the law which is 00:13:45.75\00:13:48.49 an avenue apart from Christ, there is too much self- 00:13:48.52\00:13:51.73 confidence and we can never be truly obedient to God 00:13:51.76\00:13:54.93 when we don't yield ourselves to trust Him. 00:13:54.93\00:13:57.67 That is absolutely right. 00:13:57.70\00:13:59.17 Well we have some of the things we want to jump into here 00:13:59.20\00:14:01.60 but we are going to take a break and we hope 00:14:01.64\00:14:03.51 you stay with us and we will be right back! 00:14:03.54\00:14:05.37
