Welcome back to Books of the Book, we are studying the 00:00:07.00\00:00:09.67 book of Galatians and actually Jim you had just mentioned 00:00:09.70\00:00:12.44 1 John 3:4 and we are talking about what it means to be 00:00:12.47\00:00:15.21 dead unto the law. 00:00:15.24\00:00:16.58 We are going to go there in the book of 1 John 3:4 right 00:00:16.61\00:00:21.32 before the end of the Bible you come to the book of Revelation 00:00:21.35\00:00:22.85 have the 1, 2 and 3 John, Jude and then Revelation. 00:00:22.88\00:00:27.06 I read in the New King James version and it says, 00:00:27.09\00:00:30.66 "whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, 00:00:30.69\00:00:34.23 "and sin is lawlessness. " 00:00:34.30\00:00:36.13 Now the King James version says, transgression of the law. 00:00:36.16\00:00:39.50 Sin is transgression of the law and sometimes that makes 00:00:39.53\00:00:42.94 it pretty plain obviously that sin is transgression of 00:00:42.97\00:00:45.94 God's Ten Commandment law and we see that with Paul's 00:00:45.97\00:00:48.61 writings there in Romans 7, we just looked at it. 00:00:48.64\00:00:50.98 The law that convicted him was the law that said 00:00:51.01\00:00:53.11 thou shall not covet and that kind of thing, 00:00:53.15\00:00:55.22 but some people in some of these new editions like 00:00:55.25\00:00:58.39 sin is lawlessness wonder at what it means. 00:00:58.42\00:01:01.92 What's fascinating is if you read this in the Greek 00:01:01.96\00:01:04.69 language of the New Testament, what it says is a word 00:01:04.73\00:01:07.40 for sin is Hamartia. 00:01:07.46\00:01:09.16 And the word for lawlessness is Anomia. 00:01:09.20\00:01:14.34 From the Greek word Nomos law, "a" is negative so it literally 00:01:14.37\00:01:18.81 is lawlessness, but the context there which is interesting 00:01:18.84\00:01:23.21 Hamartia means literally to miss the mark. 00:01:23.28\00:01:26.11 It would be like if you are taking target practice, a bow 00:01:26.15\00:01:30.39 and arrow and you were shooting for a bull's-eye, 00:01:30.42\00:01:32.69 and you miss the mark. 00:01:32.72\00:01:34.66 So an essence the text says in Greek to miss the mark is 00:01:34.69\00:01:39.66 lawlessness, so what would the mark be? 00:01:39.69\00:01:41.90 - the law. - The mark would be the law of God. 00:01:41.93\00:01:43.93 So in other words he is saying in this text that the mark, 00:01:43.97\00:01:46.27 the aim for the Christian is the law of God, 00:01:46.30\00:01:49.00 and that would be the standard. 00:01:49.04\00:01:50.37 You know there is a word in that verse that is key and 00:01:50.41\00:01:52.67 I think it has been in all the verses we have discussed on 00:01:52.71\00:01:55.48 the idea of the law still be valid in the New Testament. 00:01:55.51\00:01:58.28 It is a small word, but it is an important word. 00:01:58.31\00:02:01.68 The word is "is". It says that sin is lawlessness. 00:02:01.75\00:02:04.99 So when the apostle Paul was writing this, or John in this 00:02:05.05\00:02:09.49 particular case was writing this, long after the 00:02:09.52\00:02:11.49 crucifixion of Christ he was saying in present tense sin 00:02:11.53\00:02:16.26 is at this moment, breaking the law. 00:02:16.30\00:02:19.13 Falling short of the law and when you look back at all the 00:02:19.17\00:02:21.64 verses we have looked at and you will see that same 00:02:21.67\00:02:23.71 reality, the law is spiritual. 00:02:23.74\00:02:26.24 The Commandment is holy and just and good and that is in 00:02:26.27\00:02:29.48 Romans 7:12 and 14. 00:02:29.51\00:02:30.98 We found in Ephesians 6:1 wherein said the fifth 00:02:31.01\00:02:34.78 commandment is the first commandment with promise, he 00:02:34.82\00:02:37.15 is quoting the fifth commandment says in present tense 00:02:37.19\00:02:39.45 that this is the first commandment promised. 00:02:39.52\00:02:41.19 So all throughout the New Testament you will find that 00:02:41.22\00:02:44.19 those statements that relate to the law of God are in the 00:02:44.23\00:02:47.13 present tense. - that's right. 00:02:47.20\00:02:48.50 When you compare that with for example Colossians chapter 00:02:48.53\00:02:51.70 2 which talks about a law that was, it's past tense for 00:02:51.73\00:02:54.84 the handwriting of ordinances 00:02:54.90\00:02:56.64 written by Moses and it is past tense verses 00:02:56.67\00:02:59.67 the present tense law of the Ten Commandments. 00:02:59.71\00:03:02.34 It is a very good point an important point. 00:03:02.38\00:03:04.85 Another point that is brought up to me by some who don't 00:03:04.91\00:03:08.72 feel the law of God, meaning the Ten Commandments are 00:03:08.75\00:03:12.09 still valid in the New Testament is that when the Bible 00:03:12.12\00:03:14.99 speaks about Commandments is just talking about the 00:03:15.02\00:03:18.09 teachings of Christ, or the generic commands of God 00:03:18.13\00:03:21.73 for instance in Revelation 14:12 where it says here 00:03:21.80\00:03:24.60 a they, here are the patience of the saints, here are 00:03:24.63\00:03:27.40 those that keep the commandments of God. 00:03:27.44\00:03:28.77 Well they say that is not the Ten Commandments of 00:03:28.80\00:03:31.37 Exodus or in Revelation where it says later in chapter 22 00:03:31.41\00:03:35.94 Blessed are those who do His commandments. 00:03:35.98\00:03:38.05 They say that is not the Ten Commandments. 00:03:38.08\00:03:40.12 But remember as we looked at these different verses in 00:03:40.15\00:03:43.85 the context we have specifically chosen verses that quote 00:03:43.89\00:03:47.26 one of the Ten Commandments so we know what law he is 00:03:47.29\00:03:50.66 talking about, Romans 2 Romans 7, Ephesians 6, 00:03:50.69\00:03:56.06 each of these end James Chapter 2 all have in the context 00:03:56.10\00:03:59.40 one of the Ten Commandments so you know exactly what law 00:03:59.43\00:04:02.77 he is talking about. 00:04:02.80\00:04:04.87 I don't want to get this confused with the idea that you 00:04:04.91\00:04:06.54 are justified by keeping the Ten Commandments, but 00:04:06.57\00:04:09.08 just because you can't be justified by the 00:04:09.11\00:04:10.91 Ten Commandments doesn't mean they are not important or 00:04:10.95\00:04:12.75 that they don't have a place or a role. 00:04:12.81\00:04:14.22 That's what we see Paul making that point in his writings 00:04:14.25\00:04:18.15 here, is the mindset that causes people to read into what 00:04:18.19\00:04:21.99 is not here, in other words there is a mindset that the 00:04:22.02\00:04:25.36 law of God restricts us and in order to have a true 00:04:25.39\00:04:28.63 Christian liberty, the liberty is actually a liberty from 00:04:28.66\00:04:33.57 the law and thus the concept dead to the law must mean we are 00:04:33.60\00:04:37.61 free, when we say free from law or free from the thing 00:04:37.64\00:04:42.91 that held us, that freedom is the freedom to obey the law. 00:04:42.94\00:04:48.15 We picked it up in Galatians 5 where there is another 00:04:48.18\00:04:51.99 passage here a Galatians 5 that aligns with that same 00:04:52.02\00:04:55.49 point Christian liberty and we will get Galatians 5:1. 00:04:55.52\00:04:59.86 Paul says, "stand fast there fore in the liberty by which 00:04:59.89\00:05:04.17 "Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again 00:05:04.20\00:05:08.40 "with a yoke of bondage. " 00:05:08.44\00:05:09.80 I have had people approach me and say well the Bible is 00:05:09.84\00:05:12.77 pretty clear when Paul says don't be entangled with the 00:05:12.81\00:05:15.74 yoke of bondage, that is the Ten Commandments, you are free 00:05:15.78\00:05:18.68 from having to keep the Ten Commandments. 00:05:18.71\00:05:20.45 But the issue here is that is not what the apostle is 00:05:20.48\00:05:24.52 saying, we will read on here and explain that and he goes 00:05:24.55\00:05:28.42 on in verse two to say, "in deed I Paul, say to you that if 00:05:28.46\00:05:31.69 "you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. 00:05:31.73\00:05:35.00 "And I testify again to every man who become circumcised 00:05:35.03\00:05:38.60 "that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. You have 00:05:38.63\00:05:42.14 "become in this estranged from Christ, you who attempt to 00:05:42.17\00:05:45.77 "be justified by law; for you have fallen from grace. " 00:05:45.81\00:05:49.34 Now those are strong words. 00:05:49.38\00:05:51.45 That can sound on the surface, to a surface reader, wow 00:05:51.48\00:05:56.82 anybody who thinks about keeping the law they are 00:05:56.85\00:05:59.79 estranged from Christ, it's Christ or the law. 00:05:59.82\00:06:02.79 We are making a key point that I think is what creates 00:06:02.82\00:06:05.86 the confusion for many, in the book of Galatians. 00:06:05.89\00:06:08.53 That is that what Paul is addressing here is not obedience 00:06:08.56\00:06:14.07 to the law, but seeking to be justified by the law. 00:06:14.10\00:06:18.51 If he was saying the other, then he by telling the 00:06:18.54\00:06:22.01 Ephesians that they should keep the fifth commandment 00:06:22.04\00:06:25.51 would have been placing them under a yoke bondage. 00:06:25.55\00:06:29.02 It would have made him to contradict himself. 00:06:29.05\00:06:31.85 He is not talking about obedience and if you look 00:06:31.89\00:06:34.62 carefully in verse four it specifically says, "you who 00:06:34.66\00:06:37.79 "attempt to be justified by law. " 00:06:37.83\00:06:41.06 He says those are the ones estranged from Christ. 00:06:41.10\00:06:44.10 The reason is, if you are seeking to be justified by some 00:06:44.13\00:06:47.20 external behavior, you really think you are okay and you 00:06:47.27\00:06:50.31 just need to go to church and do certain things and 00:06:50.34\00:06:52.94 you don't not need that personal surrender to Christ and 00:06:53.01\00:06:55.78 a deep commitment to Christ, then you are basically 00:06:55.81\00:06:59.38 saying I don't need Christ. 00:06:59.41\00:07:01.72 You are becoming estranged to Christ. 00:07:01.75\00:07:04.29 I can clean my act a little bit and that will be sufficient. 00:07:04.32\00:07:07.16 That is exactly right so this idea of justification. 00:07:07.19\00:07:09.69 this goes back to what we were talking 00:07:09.72\00:07:11.53 about the Pharisee and the publican, the Pharisee was in 00:07:11.56\00:07:14.36 the temple and he was praying, he said I'm glad 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.97 I'm not as bad as those guys. 00:07:17.00\00:07:18.63 That's right, that's right, so if obedience is not what 00:07:18.67\00:07:22.54 places you under a yoke of bondage then what does it mean 00:07:22.57\00:07:26.41 justification by law is placing you under 00:07:26.47\00:07:29.28 a yoke of bondage? 00:07:29.31\00:07:30.65 What exactly is that telling us? 00:07:30.68\00:07:32.01 It's placing us under yoke of bondage. 00:07:32.05\00:07:33.38 Absolutely and it makes me think of this idea because he 00:07:33.42\00:07:37.15 is talking about liberty, we is the liberty. 00:07:37.19\00:07:40.49 What is liberty, is liberty freedom from having to obey 00:07:40.52\00:07:45.09 God? I think to myself why would anybody who chooses to 00:07:45.16\00:07:48.63 give their life to Christ and serve Him want to be free 00:07:48.66\00:07:52.13 from having to serve Him? 00:07:52.17\00:07:53.57 Why would I want to be free from having to obey the 00:07:53.60\00:07:56.71 principles of God's government, the principles of His law, 00:07:56.74\00:08:01.34 the principles of His very character? 00:08:01.38\00:08:03.85 Why would I want to be free from that? 00:08:03.88\00:08:06.25 Is that the kind of freedom that Christianity is talking 00:08:06.28\00:08:09.22 about? - it just can't be. 00:08:09.25\00:08:10.59 I guess the best way for me to describe this, 00:08:10.62\00:08:13.49 I look back to when we were going through 00:08:13.52\00:08:16.36 our conversion experience. 00:08:16.39\00:08:17.83 Now my brother Mark is five years older than me and I am 00:08:17.86\00:08:21.13 not sure if the camera is picking it up but he has a few 00:08:21.16\00:08:24.43 more silver streaks in his hair. 00:08:24.47\00:08:26.30 That is what gives him away, but though we were born the 00:08:26.33\00:08:30.11 first time five years apart, we were born at the same 00:08:30.14\00:08:33.84 time the second time. 00:08:33.88\00:08:35.28 We had our conversion experience around the same time. 00:08:35.31\00:08:37.65 If you were to go back to before our conversion 00:08:37.68\00:08:40.65 experience and tell us come on over we're are going to 00:08:40.68\00:08:44.69 have a Bible study of the book of Galatians, I can 00:08:44.72\00:08:47.79 imagine that I wouldn't have been all that anxious. 00:08:47.82\00:08:50.83 I remember after my conversion experience when Mark first 00:08:50.86\00:08:53.86 found - not anxious, you just would not have shown up. 00:08:53.90\00:08:56.77 Well alright, but I remember when you first found out 00:08:56.80\00:08:59.60 about me beginning to read my Bible for myself and 00:08:59.63\00:09:02.50 I was hungry for the word. 00:09:02.54\00:09:04.41 Galatians chapter 1 were the apostle Paul said that 00:09:04.44\00:09:08.01 he was called to be an apostle not from men nor 00:09:08.04\00:09:11.61 through man but through Jesus Christ. 00:09:11.65\00:09:13.55 I relate to that because I didn't have a Bible study with 00:09:13.58\00:09:16.92 someone, or evangelist did not come to me, I just read my 00:09:16.95\00:09:20.26 Bible and the Lord Jesus gripped my heart. 00:09:20.29\00:09:23.26 That was powerful, but prior to that time I wasn't 00:09:23.29\00:09:27.23 anywhere near that and I started reading my Bible and you found 00:09:27.23\00:09:30.90 out about it I remember hearing you say well, Jim he doesn't 00:09:30.93\00:09:34.57 have a religious bone in his body, and I didn't. 00:09:34.60\00:09:36.81 So if I would have been placed in certain circumstances 00:09:36.84\00:09:40.28 where to be in church all day or something, 00:09:40.34\00:09:43.08 it would have been drudgery to me. 00:09:43.11\00:09:45.45 It would have been a yoke of bondage to me. 00:09:45.48\00:09:48.25 There are many people who are going through the motions 00:09:48.28\00:09:50.99 because they believe that God is requiring it, 00:09:51.02\00:09:53.76 but in their heart they don't have the interest, 00:09:53.79\00:09:56.26 they don't have a hunger for spiritual things. 00:09:56.29\00:09:58.69 They have not yet seen their need. 00:09:58.73\00:10:00.96 I was brought to a point where I sensed a need in my 00:10:01.00\00:10:04.10 life and when I read my Bible it was like food to my soul. 00:10:04.13\00:10:07.27 But prior to being prepared for that time if 00:10:07.30\00:10:10.17 I had been introduced to it, I probably would have 00:10:10.21\00:10:13.51 been not very interested. 00:10:13.54\00:10:15.34 It wouldn't have been food to your soul and thus the 00:10:15.41\00:10:17.65 words of Jesus, "blessed are those who hunger and thirst 00:10:17.68\00:10:19.88 "after righteousness for they shall be filled. " 00:10:19.91\00:10:22.72 So we see the reality here is this idea of dead to the law, 00:10:22.75\00:10:27.56 when we go back to Galatians 2, Paul talking about him dying 00:10:27.62\00:10:31.23 to the law, notice again what he says, "for I through the 00:10:31.26\00:10:34.83 law died to the law. " In other words as the law 00:10:34.86\00:10:37.67 convicted me I saw my sinful nature, then I accepted 00:10:37.70\00:10:42.37 Christ and the cardinal nature died. 00:10:42.40\00:10:44.61 Notice how he words it, I through the law died to the law 00:10:44.64\00:10:47.18 that I might not have to worry about keeping the law 00:10:47.21\00:10:50.28 anymore? No that's not what he says. 00:10:50.31\00:10:51.65 That's not what he says at all. 00:10:51.68\00:10:53.08 He says that I might live to God. 00:10:53.11\00:10:54.52 The freedom, the liberty of a Christian life is not a 00:10:54.55\00:10:57.82 liberty from obedience, but a liberty into obedience. 00:10:57.85\00:11:01.46 Listen I was free not to obey the law of God when I was 00:11:01.49\00:11:04.36 not a Christian, I never obeyed the law of God and never 00:11:04.39\00:11:07.13 worried about it, but I was not free to obey it because 00:11:07.20\00:11:09.86 it simply wasn't in my being to do so. 00:11:09.93\00:11:12.10 But through conversion my heart was changed and the 00:11:12.13\00:11:15.74 freedom I have now is a freedom that I never had before, 00:11:15.77\00:11:18.34 and that is a freedom to serve God with my heart. 00:11:18.37\00:11:20.81 That's what Paul says, I died to the law that I might 00:11:20.84\00:11:23.45 live to God, notice verse 20, "I have been crucified with 00:11:23.51\00:11:26.78 "Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; 00:11:26.82\00:11:30.05 "and the life which I now live in the flesh 00:11:30.09\00:11:32.79 "I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and 00:11:32.82\00:11:36.22 "gave Himself for me. " 00:11:36.26\00:11:37.59 He is talking about a conversion here, he is talking about 00:11:37.63\00:11:39.59 a new experience. - Amen. If we keep reading in 00:11:39.66\00:11:42.66 verse 21, he only concludes the thought beautifully. 00:11:42.70\00:11:45.60 But before we go there I just want to take one peek at 00:11:45.63\00:11:48.77 2 Corinthians 6:11 and there is another point I would like 00:11:48.80\00:11:52.47 to make, "O Corinthians! We have spoken openly to you, 00:11:52.51\00:11:55.98 "our heart is wide open. You are not restricted by us, 00:11:56.01\00:11:59.48 "but you are restricted by your own affections. " 00:11:59.51\00:12:02.08 You know people look at the problem we have in humanity 00:12:02.12\00:12:05.05 and they say we are out of harmony with God. 00:12:05.09\00:12:07.52 Well we have one or two choices, either we can remove the 00:12:07.56\00:12:11.56 requirements, the law of God or we can remove that which is 00:12:11.59\00:12:15.53 standing in the way which is our own Carnal heart. 00:12:15.56\00:12:18.03 And the reality is that the Carnal heart is what 00:12:18.10\00:12:20.70 ultimately has to go in order for us to be brought 00:12:20.74\00:12:23.34 into harmony with God. 00:12:23.37\00:12:24.71 It is a shame many Christians look at the law as the 00:12:24.74\00:12:28.11 problem, Jesus died to do away with the law. 00:12:28.14\00:12:30.68 But no, the apostle Paul says it is our own affections. 00:12:30.71\00:12:34.45 Right here concluding with verse 21 in Galatians 2 it 00:12:34.48\00:12:37.69 says, "I do not set aside the grace of God; for if 00:12:37.72\00:12:40.86 "righteousness comes to the law, and Christ died in vain. " 00:12:40.89\00:12:44.39 It is Christ's death and us dying with Him that brings us 00:12:44.46\00:12:47.93 into harmony with God. 00:12:47.96\00:12:49.70 Friends, we hope you have enjoyed this study and we look 00:12:49.73\00:12:51.90 forward to seeing you next time. 00:12:51.93\00:12:53.40
