Welcome to Books of the Book, I'm Pastor Mark Howard 00:00:21.78\00:00:24.35 of the Global Seventh-day Adventist Church in Global 00:00:24.39\00:00:26.89 Michigan and Director of the Emmanuel Institute of Evangelism 00:00:26.92\00:00:29.09 in the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventist. 00:00:29.12\00:00:31.46 I'm here with my co-host, my younger brother. 00:00:31.49\00:00:34.13 Yes my name is Jim Howard and I am Pastor of the 00:00:34.20\00:00:36.73 Detroit Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist Church and 00:00:36.80\00:00:39.37 the South Lyon Seventh-day Adventists Church 00:00:39.40\00:00:41.20 in Michigan as well. 00:00:41.24\00:00:42.57 We are studying in the book of Galatians. 00:00:42.60\00:00:46.31 In our last time together we were looking at what I 00:00:46.34\00:00:49.94 believe is the key note, Jim, of the book of Galatians 00:00:49.98\00:00:53.48 and that is Galatians 2:16 were Paul three times is 00:00:53.52\00:00:56.65 very emphatic that we are not saved by the works of the 00:00:56.69\00:00:59.79 law but by our faith in Jesus Christ. 00:00:59.82\00:01:02.52 We are actually going to pick up there and I'm going to 00:01:02.56\00:01:04.83 read verse 16, in fact we will start in verse 15. 00:01:04.86\00:01:07.00 Galatians 2:15 and we are going to read on through the 00:01:07.03\00:01:12.30 end of the chapter here in key in on a key thought 00:01:12.33\00:01:16.30 that he has here towards the end of the chapter. 00:01:16.34\00:01:20.21 Verse 15 says, "We who are Jews by nature and not sinners 00:01:20.24\00:01:25.31 "of the Gentiles, knowing that a man is 00:01:25.35\00:01:27.58 "not justified by the works of the law; but by faith in 00:01:27.65\00:01:30.45 The Jesus Christ, even we who have believed in Christ 00:01:30.49\00:01:33.52 "Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ 00:01:33.56\00:01:36.52 "and not by the works of the law; for by the works of 00:01:36.56\00:01:40.03 "the law shall no flesh be justified, but if while we 00:01:40.06\00:01:43.16 "seek to be justified by Christ we ourselves are found 00:01:43.20\00:01:46.27 "sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin? 00:01:46.30\00:01:49.47 "Certainly not. For if I begin those things which 00:01:49.50\00:01:52.27 "I have destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. 00:01:52.31\00:01:55.28 "For I through the law died to the law that I might 00:01:55.31\00:01:58.28 "live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; 00:01:58.31\00:02:01.32 "it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; 00:02:01.38\00:02:04.75 "and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by 00:02:04.79\00:02:08.39 "faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself 00:02:08.42\00:02:11.99 "for me. I do not set aside the grace of God; for if 00:02:12.03\00:02:15.53 "righteousness comes through the law, 00:02:15.56\00:02:16.90 "then Christ died in vain. " 00:02:16.93\00:02:18.77 This is what we are going to be expounding on. 00:02:18.80\00:02:21.74 What I want to do is that I want to key in on this 00:02:21.77\00:02:24.64 right here, this term, or this phrase rather that I died 00:02:24.67\00:02:32.08 to the law, I through the law died to the law. 00:02:32.11\00:02:35.65 You know Jim many people read that as they are going 00:02:35.68\00:02:38.39 through Galatians and as we already mentioned, 00:02:38.42\00:02:40.16 Galatians is used as the book that people attempt to 00:02:40.19\00:02:44.99 prove that the apostle Paul is showing the moral law of 00:02:45.03\00:02:48.43 God, the Ten Commandments is something that Christians 00:02:48.46\00:02:51.87 don't need to concern themselves with. 00:02:51.90\00:02:54.04 This is one of those key passages where they say that it 00:02:54.07\00:02:56.97 says very plainly that I through the law died to the law. 00:02:57.04\00:02:59.91 He died to the law he didn't feel like he had a need 00:02:59.94\00:03:02.64 to keep the law anymore. 00:03:02.68\00:03:04.21 Paul realized he was free from that burdensome old law. 00:03:04.25\00:03:07.02 That is a concept that people will read into this, 00:03:07.05\00:03:10.15 but that is not at all what the apostle was saying. 00:03:10.19\00:03:13.19 No it isn't and I think that if this was the only passage 00:03:13.22\00:03:16.46 of Scripture we might be able to conjecture one way or 00:03:16.49\00:03:19.23 another, but the apostle talks about being dead to the 00:03:19.26\00:03:21.93 law in other places. 00:03:22.00\00:03:23.63 Before even going there though there is an important 00:03:23.67\00:03:25.90 point that we can find right in this verse. 00:03:25.97\00:03:28.07 Verse 19 says, "for I through the law died to the law. " 00:03:28.10\00:03:33.68 Who died? Was it the law? No he said I died to the law. 00:03:33.71\00:03:38.28 This same point is brought out in Romans chapter 7 and 00:03:38.31\00:03:41.75 I'm wondering if we could turn to that passage and read 00:03:41.82\00:03:45.22 from Romans chapter 7. 00:03:45.29\00:03:46.92 That is right and another interesting point is that it 00:03:46.96\00:03:48.62 was through the law he died to law. 00:03:48.66\00:03:49.99 So the law was employed in this death, and we are going to 00:03:50.03\00:03:52.96 talk more about that death. 00:03:52.99\00:03:54.56 What did you say Romans 7. 00:03:54.60\00:03:56.10 Chapter 7 yes and let's go to verse 1 so beginning right 00:03:56.13\00:04:01.84 there it says, "or do you not know, brethren 00:04:01.87\00:04:04.47 for I speak to those who know the law ", that the law 00:04:04.51\00:04:07.84 "has dominion over a man as long as he lives? 00:04:07.88\00:04:09.84 "For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to 00:04:09.88\00:04:13.25 "her husband as long as he lives. 00:04:13.28\00:04:15.15 "But if the husband dies she is released from the law of 00:04:15.18\00:04:18.39 "her husband. So then if while her husband lives and she 00:04:18.42\00:04:21.42 "marries "another man she will be called an adulterous; 00:04:21.46\00:04:24.13 "for if her husband dies she is free from that law so 00:04:24.16\00:04:26.76 "that she is no adulterous though 00:04:26.80\00:04:28.83 "she has married another man. " 00:04:28.86\00:04:30.83 This is simply just describing that if you are married 00:04:30.87\00:04:33.20 to someone you can't marry someone else 00:04:33.23\00:04:35.54 unless your spouse dies. 00:04:35.57\00:04:37.61 You can't be married to two people at the same time. 00:04:37.64\00:04:40.88 So then picking up in verse 4 he makes that parallel 00:04:40.91\00:04:44.15 to the Christian experience and he says, 00:04:44.18\00:04:46.78 "therefore, my brethren, you have also become dead to the 00:04:46.82\00:04:50.92 "law through the body of Christ, that you may be married 00:04:50.95\00:04:54.36 "to another! - to him who was raised from the dead, 00:04:54.39\00:04:57.76 "that we should bear fruit to God. " 00:04:57.79\00:04:59.73 So he says, you as a Christian have become dead to the 00:04:59.76\00:05:03.90 law through the sacrifice of Christ. 00:05:03.97\00:05:07.20 It is not the law itself that died, but my selfish will, 00:05:07.24\00:05:15.41 my selfish passion are what died. 00:05:15.44\00:05:17.65 This is in verse 5, "for when we were in the flesh, 00:05:17.68\00:05:21.45 "the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were 00:05:21.48\00:05:25.22 "at work in our members to bear fruit to death. " 00:05:25.25\00:05:27.92 So my sinful passions had to die through the sacrifice 00:05:27.96\00:05:32.83 of Christ, that I might be married to Christ resurrected 00:05:32.89\00:05:37.70 and live a new life. 00:05:37.73\00:05:39.33 Okay so the woman who is joined to her husband and 00:05:39.37\00:05:42.90 was joined by the law, when the husband died she sought 00:05:42.94\00:05:46.44 to marry another in the same law testified to that 00:05:46.47\00:05:49.78 marriage, so in other words the law did not change, 00:05:49.81\00:05:53.55 but the woman's relationship to law changed and Paul 00:05:53.58\00:05:57.75 applies that experience to us through conversion really. 00:05:57.82\00:06:02.02 That is exactly right. 00:06:02.06\00:06:03.83 So this idea of a law being that which we died to doesn't 00:06:03.86\00:06:09.30 change the law at all, it only changes us. 00:06:09.36\00:06:12.07 I died, but then the law is still is governing the 00:06:12.10\00:06:17.41 situation, it's just that now I am free to marry another. 00:06:17.44\00:06:20.04 My relation to the law changed and we see that in verse 6 00:06:20.08\00:06:23.18 where it says, "but now we have been delivered from the 00:06:23.21\00:06:26.28 "law, having died to what we were held by. " 00:06:26.31\00:06:30.55 So it's like a man who is sentenced to death, he has 00:06:30.59\00:06:32.72 committed a terrible crime and is sentenced to death 00:06:32.75\00:06:34.82 and the law demands the death of that criminal. 00:06:34.89\00:06:37.89 But when he pays that penalty, if he goes and dies the 00:06:37.93\00:06:42.30 law and no longer has any claim upon him because the 00:06:42.33\00:06:45.77 penalty has been paid and he is died to what he was held 00:06:45.80\00:06:49.20 by, died in relation to the law. 00:06:49.24\00:06:51.81 His relation to the law has changed because of that death. 00:06:51.84\00:06:54.54 But if somebody else were to break the law, 00:06:54.58\00:06:56.21 it is still valid. 00:06:56.24\00:06:57.78 That is right, we can term it another way. 00:06:57.85\00:07:00.25 I could be a criminal or a thief and he could have 15 to 00:07:00.28\00:07:03.52 20 years in prison and after he serves his 20 years he is 00:07:03.55\00:07:06.79 free to go, and that law that once condemned him, 00:07:06.82\00:07:10.23 no longer condemns him because he is died to the law 00:07:10.26\00:07:13.63 in that sense. 00:07:13.66\00:07:15.20 Paul is bring unity to the debt that we experienced through 00:07:15.23\00:07:18.23 Christ and we are going to see it as we go on. 00:07:18.27\00:07:19.60 Notice, because he says, "now we have been delivered from 00:07:19.63\00:07:22.34 "the law, having died to what we were held by, so that 00:07:22.37\00:07:25.17 "we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and 00:07:25.21\00:07:29.24 "not in the oldness of the letter. " 00:07:29.28\00:07:30.71 The whole idea is the death brings the opportunity 00:07:30.75\00:07:34.82 for service and not for dis-service. 00:07:34.85\00:07:37.02 And when we were in the flesh, we can only serve God 00:07:37.05\00:07:40.42 outwardly, we can only serve Him in the letter because 00:07:40.46\00:07:43.49 the heart attitude wasn't really in harmony with God. 00:07:43.53\00:07:47.40 That flesh, those sinful ways had to die in order for the 00:07:47.40\00:07:50.67 Spirit of God to create a new person inside and we now 00:07:50.73\00:07:53.97 serve God in a totally different way. 00:07:54.00\00:07:55.84 The flesh had to die in order for the Spirit to really 00:07:55.87\00:07:59.17 have its place in our life. 00:07:59.21\00:08:00.64 That's right, it's interesting here in Romans chapter 7 00:08:00.68\00:08:04.45 that it is the same chapter where someone would look in a 00:08:04.48\00:08:08.18 superficial reading and say wow we have become dead 00:08:08.22\00:08:10.39 to the law and the law is not important. 00:08:10.42\00:08:11.79 But right on in chapter 7 we find evidence's of the law 00:08:11.85\00:08:14.52 of God right there and this is one of the important 00:08:14.56\00:08:17.16 things that I think we need to recognize and I think our 00:08:17.19\00:08:20.23 viewers would appreciate this. 00:08:20.26\00:08:22.03 In the New Testament, the Ten Commandment law is 00:08:22.06\00:08:25.50 validated as still the will of God for Christians. 00:08:25.53\00:08:28.90 I just want to look here in Romans 7 mentioned in verse 12. 00:08:28.94\00:08:33.71 Right there it says, "therefore the law is holy, 00:08:33.74\00:08:37.55 "and the commandment holy and just and good. " 00:08:37.58\00:08:40.65 Right there it is clear he is talking about the 00:08:40.68\00:08:43.65 Ten Commandments because if you look back at verse 7 00:08:43.69\00:08:47.42 he says, "what show we say then? Is the law sin? 00:08:47.46\00:08:50.63 "Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have 00:08:50.66\00:08:53.73 "known sin except through the law. For I would not 00:08:53.76\00:08:56.46 "have known covetousness unless the law had said, 00:08:56.50\00:08:59.23 "you shall not covet. " 00:08:59.27\00:09:00.67 Now which law says you shall not covet? 00:09:00.70\00:09:02.04 That is the Ten Commandments. - are pretty plain. 00:09:02.07\00:09:04.64 - that is the law he is speaking of specifically 00:09:04.67\00:09:07.28 in Romans when he says it is holy and just and good. 00:09:07.31\00:09:10.05 Then you look down in verse 14 and he says, "for we 00:09:10.08\00:09:13.15 "know that the law is spiritual, but I am Carnal. " 00:09:13.18\00:09:16.52 The law is being spoken of as still valid for the 00:09:16.55\00:09:19.25 Christian, it is still good, it is still holy, 00:09:19.29\00:09:21.96 and it is right. 00:09:21.99\00:09:23.32 What is fascinating about that Jim is that when it says 00:09:23.36\00:09:25.43 the law is spiritual but I am Carnal. 00:09:25.46\00:09:27.23 It draws this distinction and then the reality is if something 00:09:27.30\00:09:31.23 was Carnal does a change apply here? 00:09:31.27\00:09:35.27 Is a change needed? 00:09:35.30\00:09:36.64 If one thing is Carnal at one thing is spiritual 00:09:36.67\00:09:38.51 you will have to change one or the other in which one are 00:09:38.54\00:09:40.28 you going to change? 00:09:40.31\00:09:41.64 Are you good change to spiritual thing into Carnal? 00:09:41.68\00:09:43.45 No, God for bid Paul says. 00:09:43.48\00:09:45.68 You are going to change the Carnal into spiritual and 00:09:45.71\00:09:49.35 notice that the law is spiritual so Paul is making 00:09:49.38\00:09:51.35 a point in there is nothing wrong with the law. 00:09:51.39\00:09:53.29 - that's right and to just be clear, our Carnal mind, 00:09:53.32\00:09:57.19 the nature we were born with, cannot be changed. 00:09:57.23\00:09:59.89 Romans 8:7 says, that it is opposed to God and it can't 00:09:59.93\00:10:03.20 be changed, so we need a new birth, we need the Spirit of 00:10:03.23\00:10:06.20 God to come from outside of us to bring us into harmony 00:10:06.23\00:10:09.17 with this spiritual law. 00:10:09.20\00:10:11.01 But that law is still validated in the New Testament. 00:10:11.04\00:10:13.31 I think of another example that we might want to turn to. 00:10:13.34\00:10:16.31 Ephesians, we have been looking at Galatians but to the 00:10:16.34\00:10:19.31 right of Galatians is the book of Ephesians and in 00:10:19.35\00:10:22.08 chapter 6 the apostle Paul says something very affirming 00:10:22.12\00:10:25.49 about the Ten Commandments, he says in verse 1, 00:10:25.52\00:10:28.02 "children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is 00:10:28.06\00:10:31.06 "right. Honor your father and mother," 00:10:31.09\00:10:33.76 now he is in quotes. 00:10:33.80\00:10:35.60 "Which is the first commandment with promise: that it 00:10:35.63\00:10:38.87 may be well with you and you may live long on the earth. " 00:10:38.93\00:10:42.14 Here very clearly he is encouraging the Ephesians to 00:10:42.17\00:10:45.64 keep the fifth commandment. - that is right! 00:10:45.71\00:10:47.58 So to say that the law is no longer valid and what 00:10:47.61\00:10:50.55 Paul was saying in Galatians was that the law is no 00:10:50.58\00:10:53.45 longer needed would be to contradict him in what 00:10:53.48\00:10:56.32 he is telling Ephesians here in chapter 6. 00:10:56.35\00:10:58.15 That is right in fact he would be guilty of putting them 00:10:58.19\00:11:01.59 under the law, as some claim, that the apostle Paul is 00:11:01.62\00:11:04.93 fighting against, now he is actually upholding it 00:11:04.99\00:11:06.96 like you have said. 00:11:07.00\00:11:08.30 It makes me think of a text in the book of James too. 00:11:08.33\00:11:10.43 If we can go to the book of James which is further on 00:11:10.47\00:11:12.80 in the New Testament after the book of Hebrews 00:11:12.83\00:11:14.57 you will come to the book of James. 00:11:14.64\00:11:16.00 James talks and James 2, and he makes this point in 00:11:16.04\00:11:21.84 James 2:10, where he says, "for whoever shall keep the 00:11:21.88\00:11:27.62 "whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. 00:11:27.65\00:11:31.82 "For he who said, do not commit adultery, also said, 00:11:31.85\00:11:35.16 "do not murder. " 00:11:35.19\00:11:36.52 So here we have the law he's talking about which is 00:11:36.56\00:11:39.79 the Ten Commandments, here we have the law once again. 00:11:39.83\00:11:42.70 James is pointing out the importance of observing the 00:11:42.73\00:11:45.27 Ten Commandments, but notice what he says and this 00:11:45.30\00:11:47.77 is very important here. 00:11:47.80\00:11:49.14 He says, whoever basically stumbles in one point is 00:11:49.17\00:11:52.14 guilty of all and it doesn't even seem fair. 00:11:52.17\00:11:54.41 Like you mean if I steal I have murdered? 00:11:54.44\00:11:56.91 But notice his reasoning in verse 11. 00:11:56.95\00:11:59.31 Verse 11 starts with this word for which means because 00:11:59.35\00:12:02.52 here is the explanation, this is an explanatory text. 00:12:02.58\00:12:06.35 "Whoever breaks one, breaks all because he who said 00:12:06.39\00:12:09.59 "do not commit adultery also said do not murder. " 00:12:09.62\00:12:12.79 So the whole idea is, is not about the particular 00:12:12.83\00:12:15.93 commandment as much as it is the lawgiver. 00:12:15.96\00:12:18.60 If you break one commandment, if you steal but you don't 00:12:18.63\00:12:21.40 lie you still have disobeyed the lawgiver. 00:12:21.44\00:12:24.57 So the point is the law is the product of the lawgiver and 00:12:24.61\00:12:28.84 if we serve the lawgiver why would 00:12:28.88\00:12:30.71 we not be obeying His commandments? 00:12:30.75\00:12:32.51 You know there is another verse we might want to look 00:12:34.48\00:12:38.49 at and that is in Romans 2 and beginning in verse 21. 00:12:38.52\00:12:42.46 Here the apostle Paul says and he is speaking to Jews. 00:12:46.73\00:12:49.70 He says, "you, therefore, who teach another, do you not 00:12:49.73\00:12:52.73 "teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not 00:12:52.77\00:12:55.77 "steal, do you steal? You who say, do not commit 00:12:55.80\00:12:59.37 "adultery, do you commit adultery?" 00:12:59.41\00:13:01.41 What law are we talking about here? 00:13:01.44\00:13:03.28 The Ten Commandment law again, "you who abhor idols, 00:13:03.31\00:13:07.05 "do you rob temples?" 00:13:07.08\00:13:08.68 Idols of course is Commandment number two. 00:13:08.72\00:13:10.69 Then he says, "you make your boast in the law, do you 00:13:10.72\00:13:14.82 "dishonor God through breaking the law?" 00:13:14.86\00:13:17.23 It seems pretty clear that he is saying if we break 00:13:17.26\00:13:20.13 the law, we are dishonoring God. - that's right! 00:13:20.16\00:13:22.73 That's right and he goes on to say, "for the name of 00:13:22.76\00:13:25.53 "God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you. " 00:13:25.60\00:13:29.20 So here he is telling us that we have dishonored God and 00:13:29.24\00:13:32.74 blasphemy His name among nonbelievers when we resist the 00:13:32.81\00:13:36.24 law of God, fascinating and New Testament theology here. 00:13:36.31\00:13:39.75 We could go to the core of this and say it is not just 00:13:39.78\00:13:43.65 these statements that talk about the law in a direct way, 00:13:43.69\00:13:47.52 but the statements that talk about sin. 00:13:47.56\00:13:49.46 The Bible says in 1 John 3:4 that sin is transgression 00:13:49.49\00:13:55.23 of the law, or sin is lawless- ness it says in the New King 00:13:55.30\00:13:59.00 James, but the idea there is that sin still in the New 00:13:59.03\00:14:02.50 Testament times was being spoken of as breaking the law. 00:14:02.57\00:14:05.77 That's right, and it is about time for us to take a break, 00:14:05.81\00:14:08.98 but when we come back from our break we will pick up 00:14:09.01\00:14:11.45 right there and really get into a little more of the depth 00:14:11.48\00:14:14.72 of the point of this whole idea of being dead to the law. 00:14:14.75\00:14:17.95 and how it points us to Christ in the new birth. 00:14:17.99\00:14:22.52 So stay with us! 00:14:22.56\00:14:24.46
