Welcome back to Books of the Book and we are studying 00:00:05.40\00:00:07.97 the book of Galatians and we have been talking today 00:00:08.00\00:00:10.57 about justification. 00:00:10.61\00:00:11.94 It is the powerful and beautiful core concept and 00:00:11.97\00:00:17.31 it is the gospel. 00:00:17.35\00:00:18.68 Justification is a key part of the gospel. 00:00:18.71\00:00:20.82 You have the role of justification and sanctification 00:00:20.85\00:00:23.45 which all comes through faith in Christ of which 00:00:23.49\00:00:24.95 we will be talking more about. 00:00:24.99\00:00:26.32 We are talking about how justification is needed because 00:00:26.35\00:00:32.26 of the condemnation that the law brings. 00:00:32.29\00:00:34.46 Justification is for the purpose of bringing our hearts 00:00:34.50\00:00:38.10 into harmony with that law and with the will of God. 00:00:38.17\00:00:41.74 Which is expressed in that law. 00:00:41.77\00:00:43.17 We have been talking about the need of justification 00:00:43.20\00:00:47.01 and I want to look at the gospel of Luke. 00:00:47.04\00:00:49.48 We are going to Luke 5 and find a passage here in the 00:00:49.51\00:00:53.65 words of Jesus that really draw out this issue, 00:00:53.68\00:00:56.89 the importance of sensing 00:00:56.92\00:00:59.09 the need of the justification of Christ. 00:00:59.12\00:01:03.26 You will find in Luke chapter 5:30 with me. 00:01:03.29\00:01:07.30 Matthew, Mark, Luke chapter 5:30 and it says in there, 00:01:07.30\00:01:10.67 "And the scribes and the Pharisees complained against 00:01:10.73\00:01:13.97 "His disciples saying, why do You eat and drink with 00:01:14.00\00:01:17.21 "tax collectors and sinners?" 00:01:17.24\00:01:18.87 We will comment on that in just a moment. 00:01:18.91\00:01:20.34 "Jesus answered and said to them, those who are well have 00:01:20.41\00:01:24.38 "no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 00:01:24.41\00:01:29.28 "I have not come to call the righteous, 00:01:29.32\00:01:32.42 "but sinners to repentance. " 00:01:32.45\00:01:34.96 The point that Jesus is making here is that the ministry, 00:01:34.99\00:01:38.36 His ministry was not to those who didn't need help 00:01:38.39\00:01:42.23 but to those who did. 00:01:42.26\00:01:43.60 Not only to those who didn't need help per se, 00:01:43.63\00:01:46.57 because everybody needed His help. 00:01:46.60\00:01:48.90 His ministry was to those who sensed they were sick, 00:01:48.94\00:01:52.57 who sensed their need. 00:01:52.61\00:01:54.24 I want to appeal to the viewers about the beauty of 00:01:54.28\00:01:56.98 God justifying the ungodly. 00:01:57.01\00:01:59.75 It is not uncommon for people to think, well I am so 00:01:59.78\00:02:04.89 wretched, I'm so sinful that I couldn't ask God, I couldn't 00:02:04.92\00:02:09.22 expect God to accept me, He would never accept me. 00:02:09.26\00:02:12.19 That's exactly, exactly who Jesus came to serve. 00:02:12.23\00:02:15.03 That's why we see Him and it is the reason they are so 00:02:15.06\00:02:17.93 upset because He was with tax collectors and sinners. 00:02:18.00\00:02:20.60 In their mind He was hanging out with the type of people 00:02:20.64\00:02:23.30 that were the worst of the worst and you would never be 00:02:23.37\00:02:26.01 found in the a company of these lowlife people. 00:02:26.04\00:02:28.81 But those were the very people that Jesus was always with. 00:02:28.84\00:02:31.95 They sense their need of Him. 00:02:31.98\00:02:34.35 That's right, that's right and you know when you think 00:02:34.38\00:02:37.35 about that, there are two ditches that we can fall into. 00:02:37.39\00:02:40.32 The one is thinking that we are not worthy of that 00:02:40.36\00:02:45.23 justification, that somehow we are not able to bring 00:02:45.26\00:02:49.53 ourselves into the presence of God because we cannot 00:02:49.56\00:02:53.67 imagine Him seeing all our flaws and not recognizing we 00:02:53.70\00:02:57.24 must be brought into the presence of God in order to have 00:02:57.27\00:03:00.81 those flaws removed in order for Him to 00:03:00.84\00:03:02.41 cover us with His blood. 00:03:02.44\00:03:04.48 Having said that, there is another subtle deception of 00:03:04.51\00:03:09.55 our heart that sometimes happens when it 00:03:09.58\00:03:11.75 comes to justifying ourselves. 00:03:11.79\00:03:13.56 That is that we recognize we are guilty, we admit that 00:03:13.59\00:03:17.73 we are guilty and we are proud we are guilty. 00:03:17.76\00:03:21.20 It makes us feel humble sometimes and if we are not 00:03:21.23\00:03:24.33 careful we cannot look at this in the right light. 00:03:24.37\00:03:27.84 One of my favorite passages is where David says when 00:03:27.87\00:03:32.51 he is writing after his own sin, a very serious sin. 00:03:32.54\00:03:37.11 About his repentance when he says, 00:03:37.15\00:03:40.12 "I acknowledge my trans- gressions" there in Psalm 51. 00:03:40.15\00:03:43.52 Well the point that I would like to make is David did not 00:03:43.55\00:03:46.55 just acknowledge his transgressions, he acknowledged 00:03:46.59\00:03:49.56 his transgressions to be transgressions. 00:03:49.59\00:03:52.63 In other words, it's one thing to know what 00:03:52.66\00:03:55.63 you are doing is wrong because God says it's wrong. 00:03:55.66\00:03:58.87 It is another thing to believe and understand in your 00:03:58.90\00:04:02.37 heart why it is wrong, to believe in your heart that it 00:04:02.40\00:04:05.77 is wrong, if you only believe it is wrong because 00:04:05.81\00:04:08.41 God says it's wrong and you try to fix it, 00:04:08.44\00:04:12.55 you are not going to understand why and you won't put 00:04:12.61\00:04:16.08 your whole heart into it. 00:04:16.12\00:04:17.45 In other words if you only think that 00:04:17.49\00:04:19.69 God thinks it's wrong. 00:04:19.72\00:04:21.36 So God things it's wrong and I know God thinks is wrong 00:04:21.39\00:04:24.29 so I won't do it, but in your own heart if it wasn't 00:04:24.33\00:04:27.20 because of what God said He would say that it really 00:04:27.23\00:04:30.07 isn't that big a deal to me 00:04:30.10\00:04:31.43 but I guess it's a big deal to Him. 00:04:31.47\00:04:32.80 That's right for an example like as a parent if I tell 00:04:32.83\00:04:37.24 my daughter don't ride out where the cars are, so she 00:04:37.27\00:04:41.41 takes her bike and instead of riding right where the cars 00:04:41.44\00:04:45.55 are she rides right next to where the 00:04:45.58\00:04:47.18 cars are and where they park. 00:04:47.25\00:04:49.45 She's thinking I don't know why they don't want me out 00:04:49.52\00:04:51.85 there but I can be here because she does not fully 00:04:51.89\00:04:54.02 understand the danger I'm trying to tell her about. 00:04:54.06\00:04:56.16 So because she doesn't understand that 00:04:56.19\00:04:57.83 she pushes the envelope. 00:04:57.86\00:04:59.26 A lot of times people push the envelope in terms of 00:04:59.29\00:05:02.23 the will of God because they don't really acknowledge 00:05:02.26\00:05:05.13 their transgressions as transgressions, 00:05:05.17\00:05:07.37 they don't really accept God's will and I think about 00:05:07.44\00:05:11.24 justification through faith in Christ. 00:05:11.27\00:05:13.71 We are talking about the cross of Christ 00:05:13.74\00:05:16.14 that justifies us. 00:05:16.18\00:05:18.11 It is our substitute, Jesus has taken our penalty for us. 00:05:18.18\00:05:22.28 At the same time we are acknowledging that, that penalty 00:05:22.32\00:05:27.46 He is taking for our sins, we are also accepting His will. 00:05:27.49\00:05:32.39 The act of acknowledging our sin crucified the Son of God, 00:05:32.43\00:05:37.23 at the same time if we truly are acknowledging that 00:05:37.27\00:05:40.47 we are going to accept His will as expressed in His law. 00:05:40.50\00:05:44.71 We are going to accept that to be a new way of life 00:05:44.74\00:05:48.11 otherwise we are not really acknowledging 00:05:48.14\00:05:50.25 that sin was sin. 00:05:50.28\00:05:52.48 That's right, that's right it reminds me of the parable 00:05:52.51\00:05:54.52 of the Pharisee and the tax collector. 00:05:54.55\00:05:58.12 It's in Luke 18 and again you have it in 00:05:58.15\00:06:01.76 the context of justification. 00:06:01.82\00:06:03.59 Luke 18:9 that "Jesus spoke this parable to some who 00:06:03.63\00:06:10.27 "trusted in themselves that they were righteous 00:06:10.30\00:06:13.84 "and despised others. " 00:06:13.87\00:06:15.50 The idea is when God says something is right or wrong and 00:06:15.57\00:06:20.71 I feel at liberty to do something different, in essence 00:06:20.74\00:06:25.85 I'm trusting in myself that I am righteous. 00:06:25.88\00:06:28.78 This is a hard concept to get through as Christians 00:06:28.82\00:06:32.32 Because as Christians we are taught 00:06:32.35\00:06:33.89 a lot of cliche religion. 00:06:33.92\00:06:36.66 We know we are not supposed to say we are righteous. 00:06:36.69\00:06:38.99 Christians, no, no I'm a sinner we say, but it is possible 00:06:39.06\00:06:42.63 for the mouth to confess the poverty of soul that 00:06:42.70\00:06:45.50 the heart does not recognize. - right, right! 00:06:45.53\00:06:48.24 Here is the case with this Pharisee who he trusted in 00:06:48.27\00:06:51.54 himself, the root word of righteousness is right. 00:06:51.57\00:06:54.78 He might not have felt he was perfect, but he thought he 00:06:54.81\00:06:57.91 had some good ideas, good enough to at least put him 00:06:57.95\00:07:01.08 above this tax collector. 00:07:01.12\00:07:02.82 And that is what we find in the parable. 00:07:02.85\00:07:04.19 as they go up to pray. 00:07:04.22\00:07:05.55 The Pharisee prays and he says, thank you God that I am not 00:07:05.59\00:07:08.26 as bad as other people, but the tax collector it says in 00:07:08.32\00:07:12.03 verse 13, "standing afar off, would not so much as raise 00:07:12.09\00:07:15.76 "his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 00:07:15.80\00:07:18.60 "God be merciful to me a sinner!" 00:07:18.63\00:07:20.54 I think of that, why does a person beat their breasts? 00:07:20.60\00:07:25.44 But he really feels a soul anguish over his unworthiness. 00:07:25.47\00:07:30.21 And Jesus responds to these two and says in verse 14, and 00:07:30.25\00:07:34.08 "I tell you, this man" the one who beat his breast, the 00:07:34.12\00:07:38.15 tax collector, "went down to his house justified rather 00:07:38.19\00:07:42.16 "than the other; for everyone who exalts himself 00:07:42.19\00:07:45.23 "will be humbled, and he who humbles 00:07:45.26\00:07:46.59 "himself will be exalted. " 00:07:46.63\00:07:48.20 - Amen, Amen, it sounds a lot like another story in 00:07:48.23\00:07:51.60 the Old Testament, Cain and Abel. 00:07:51.67\00:07:54.34 I always think about that story because Cain and Abel 00:07:54.37\00:07:58.14 were the sons of Adam and Eve and they both were taught 00:07:58.17\00:08:01.94 to worship God. 00:08:01.98\00:08:03.68 They both did worship God, God had already given them the 00:08:03.71\00:08:06.51 instruction on sacrifice, animal sacrifices that would 00:08:06.55\00:08:09.32 point forward to the death of Christ. 00:08:09.38\00:08:11.19 So they were already in the process of erecting an altar, 00:08:11.25\00:08:15.19 worshiping and we have the story in Genesis 4 were they 00:08:15.22\00:08:19.73 both worshiped God, they both set up an altar but Cain 00:08:19.76\00:08:24.23 instead of offering a lamb as God had prescribed, 00:08:24.27\00:08:28.74 he decided to offer the fruit of the ground. 00:08:28.77\00:08:30.97 He was a farmer and thought that was as good as the other 00:08:31.04\00:08:34.84 after all he was worshiping God. 00:08:34.88\00:08:36.51 He was for the most part, as it were we might say today 00:08:36.54\00:08:40.75 a good person, but it said that God did not accept or have 00:08:40.82\00:08:44.39 respect unto his offering, only on to Abel's offering. 00:08:44.42\00:08:49.29 So here we have a perfect picture of this idea that as 00:08:49.32\00:08:54.00 long as I do most things okay, that is really okay. 00:08:54.03\00:08:57.70 It is the same thing that the young lawyer tried to 00:08:57.73\00:09:02.34 justify himself said, he said hey as long as I consider 00:09:02.37\00:09:05.67 these people my neighbor do I really have to consider 00:09:05.71\00:09:08.94 everybody my neighbor? 00:09:08.98\00:09:10.41 So the idea of justifying ourselves is we weave into 00:09:10.45\00:09:15.18 our own element the worship of God or into obedience 00:09:15.22\00:09:20.09 to God, being clearly obedience might seem as a sign of 00:09:20.12\00:09:25.06 weakness almost rather than following God faithfully. 00:09:25.13\00:09:31.93 - Well obedience is treated by some to be something 00:09:32.00\00:09:38.81 that is contrary to faith. 00:09:38.87\00:09:40.28 In other words if you obey strictly you must not believe 00:09:40.31\00:09:44.11 or something of that nature. 00:09:44.15\00:09:46.55 What we see is the belief prompts this trust that what 00:09:46.58\00:09:52.39 God says is right. 00:09:52.42\00:09:53.76 Justification comes to the man like the tax collector 00:09:53.79\00:09:57.23 who can accept that what God says is right and yield his 00:09:57.26\00:10:00.70 own desires, or his own concepts of what is right. 00:10:00.76\00:10:04.93 We find that where we looked at Romans 4:5 where 00:10:04.97\00:10:09.14 it talked about God justifying the ungodly. 00:10:09.17\00:10:12.77 Again in Romans 4:5, "but to him who does not work but 00:10:12.81\00:10:16.01 "the believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith 00:10:16.04\00:10:19.18 "is accounted for righteousness. " 00:10:19.21\00:10:22.98 It is talking about Abraham two verses earlier Romans 4:3 00:10:23.02\00:10:28.39 says, "Abraham believed God and it was accounted 00:10:28.42\00:10:33.46 "to him for righteousness. " 00:10:33.50\00:10:34.83 Abraham accepted God's assessment of his own condition 00:10:34.83\00:10:39.47 and God's assessment of the remedy. 00:10:39.50\00:10:42.30 He didn't try to ultimately manufacture that. 00:10:42.34\00:10:45.97 He ultimately came to the point where he accepted what 00:10:46.01\00:10:49.38 God said and he acted on it, and he obeyed it. 00:10:49.41\00:10:53.65 Because of his attitude of obedience to God, 00:10:53.68\00:10:57.59 his allegiance to God, the Bible says his faith 00:10:57.62\00:11:01.52 was counted as righteousness. 00:11:01.59\00:11:04.13 I like that word attitude that you used. 00:11:04.16\00:11:06.59 It really describes well the issue when it comes to 00:11:06.63\00:11:11.87 justification because there are many people who wonder 00:11:11.90\00:11:17.44 if I am a sinner and Jesus died for me to cover my sins, 00:11:17.47\00:11:23.01 then why do I have to worry about obeying? 00:11:23.04\00:11:25.88 What makes the difference? 00:11:25.95\00:11:27.28 How is one person justified who is a sinner and 00:11:27.32\00:11:29.55 another person is not? 00:11:29.58\00:11:31.19 Well the issue has everything to do with attitude. 00:11:31.22\00:11:33.22 The example of Abraham was perfect because if you look in 00:11:33.25\00:11:36.56 Romans 4:20 it says something very interesting. 00:11:36.59\00:11:42.10 "He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief. " 00:11:42.13\00:11:46.53 Now the idea there of not wavering at the promise of God 00:11:46.57\00:11:50.54 is a little bit funny because we know he made mistakes. 00:11:50.57\00:11:53.81 You can read them in the book of Genesis where he made 00:11:53.84\00:11:57.08 mistakes, so why did he say I did not waver. 00:11:57.11\00:12:00.12 Or why could he say he did not waver? 00:12:00.15\00:12:02.28 Well the reason is because Abraham never really looked 00:12:02.32\00:12:04.95 back, Abraham never gave up. 00:12:04.99\00:12:07.36 Abraham never turned back on God. 00:12:07.39\00:12:09.72 Abraham always was seeking to move forward and even 00:12:09.76\00:12:13.06 though he was making mistakes, those mistakes could be 00:12:13.09\00:12:16.36 covered because he was pressing and on in the work of God. 00:12:16.43\00:12:19.70 He was pressing on in his efforts to follow God. 00:12:19.73\00:12:22.50 That is right so whole issue we are talking about 00:12:22.54\00:12:25.64 justification, what is key is the realization 00:12:25.67\00:12:28.74 of the need for it. 00:12:28.78\00:12:30.85 As Paul was pointing out that a man is not justified 00:12:30.88\00:12:32.85 by works of the law but by faith in Christ. 00:12:32.88\00:12:35.12 The reality is this, a person who trusts in the works of the 00:12:35.15\00:12:38.52 law, does not see their need. 00:12:38.59\00:12:40.39 They feel the ability to meet their requirements of God 00:12:40.42\00:12:44.13 in their own strength and this is why verse 15 it says, 00:12:44.16\00:12:47.76 "we who are Jews by nature and not sinners of the Gentiles. " 00:12:47.76\00:12:50.97 The challenge was because Jews where religious felt that 00:12:51.03\00:12:54.20 they were above the Gentiles and they had some 00:12:54.24\00:12:56.20 righteousness in themselves, the way that too often Christians 00:12:56.24\00:12:59.51 today are tempted to feel that they have something 00:12:59.54\00:13:01.68 they really don't have. 00:13:01.74\00:13:03.08 Paul was trying to make a point, you are as much in need 00:13:03.11\00:13:05.95 of justification as the most common ungodly sinner. 00:13:05.98\00:13:09.55 But if we sense our need and we sense our guilt then 00:13:09.58\00:13:13.09 Jesus is willing and ready to justify us. 00:13:13.15\00:13:15.72 Absolutely right, it all comes down to realizing 00:13:15.76\00:13:18.53 our need of Christ. 00:13:18.56\00:13:19.89 Also Paul said in 1 Timothy 1:15, "Christ Jesus came 00:13:19.93\00:13:22.70 "into this world to save sinners of who I am chief. " 00:13:22.73\00:13:25.53 If you feel like the chief of sinners Jesus came for you. 00:13:25.57\00:13:28.00 Accept Him today. 00:13:28.07\00:13:30.14
