Well welcome back, right before our break we have been 00:00:07.47\00:00:10.74 talking about the experiences of Abraham and how God had 00:00:10.77\00:00:14.01 promised Abraham he would be the father of many 00:00:14.04\00:00:18.08 generations and after some time it didn't come to pass. 00:00:18.11\00:00:23.92 Abraham and his wife Sarah, Sarai at the time, her slave 00:00:23.95\00:00:28.36 girl Hagar concocted a plan by which they thought they 00:00:28.39\00:00:32.36 had fulfilled the promise of God by their own devising. 00:00:32.39\00:00:36.20 They had a son, Hager had a son by the name of Ishmael. 00:00:36.23\00:00:41.07 Now we pick up in Genesis 16:16, "Abram was 86 years old 00:00:41.10\00:00:45.91 "when Hager bore Ishmael to Abram. " 00:00:45.94\00:00:48.04 They thought that that was the child and that the promise 00:00:48.08\00:00:51.18 what's fulfilled until we read the next verse. 00:00:51.21\00:00:53.62 We're coming to Chapter 17:1 "when Abraham was 99 years 00:00:53.65\00:00:56.62 old," so at this time Ishmael would have been somewhere 00:00:56.69\00:01:01.12 between 13 and 14 years old and for 13 years this is the 00:01:01.16\00:01:04.93 the child that Abraham has treasured in his heart as his 00:01:04.96\00:01:08.66 own son, he is going to be the one. 00:01:08.70\00:01:10.43 - they assumed everything was going according to plan. 00:01:10.47\00:01:13.74 That's right they did until God comes to Abraham here 00:01:13.77\00:01:17.11 and He says, verse two, "I will make my covenant between 00:01:17.14\00:01:20.44 "me and you and will multiply you exceedingly. Then 00:01:20.51\00:01:24.05 "Abram fell on his face and God talked with him saying: 00:01:24.08\00:01:27.18 "As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you 00:01:27.25\00:01:30.32 "shall be a father of many nations. " 00:01:30.35\00:01:31.69 Now this is where he changes his name to Abraham, but 00:01:31.72\00:01:34.02 Abraham is beside himself and you pick that up in verse 00:01:34.06\00:01:36.73 18 where it says, "and Abraham says to God, oh that 00:01:36.76\00:01:39.36 "Ishmael might live before You!." 00:01:39.39\00:01:41.10 I mean he just couldn't understand because for 13 years 00:01:41.13\00:01:44.57 he thought that this was the promise and God shows up and 00:01:44.60\00:01:47.94 says okay Abraham now is the time. 00:01:48.00\00:01:49.60 - he had poured his whole heart into Ishmael, developing 00:01:49.64\00:01:52.41 Ishmael as being the one. 00:01:52.44\00:01:54.08 Yeah, and now God comes to him and says that Ishmael is 00:01:54.11\00:01:57.78 not the one and we pick up in verse 9 as God promises 00:01:57.81\00:02:01.55 this son to him in his old age. 00:02:01.58\00:02:04.15 In verse 9 it says, "And God said to Abraham: As for you, 00:02:04.19\00:02:07.56 "you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendents 00:02:07.59\00:02:10.46 "after you throughout their generations. This is My 00:02:10.49\00:02:13.06 "covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and 00:02:13.09\00:02:15.93 "your descendents after you: Every male child among you 00:02:15.96\00:02:19.30 "shall be circumcised; and you shall be circumcised in 00:02:19.33\00:02:22.47 "the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of 00:02:22.50\00:02:25.54 "the covenant between Me and you. " 00:02:25.61\00:02:27.38 What a sign. - when people look at that they say 00:02:27.41\00:02:33.35 why in the world of all things to make a sign of would 00:02:33.38\00:02:37.05 God appoint circumcision? 00:02:37.09\00:02:38.72 But the reality is God was dealing with a part of 00:02:38.75\00:02:42.52 Abraham's anatomy that was involved in his own concocting 00:02:42.56\00:02:46.29 of a plan and God wanted something to communicate to him 00:02:46.33\00:02:50.47 and every generation afterwards that until the flesh was 00:02:50.50\00:02:55.17 cut away, until Godhead done an operation in the situation. 00:02:55.20\00:02:59.71 Not until then would the works of man be acceptable to God. 00:02:59.74\00:03:03.65 And it's pointing to something, it wasn't pointing to the 00:03:03.68\00:03:07.65 outward type of circumcision as we find other places in 00:03:07.68\00:03:11.62 the Scripture like in the book of Deuteronomy. 00:03:11.65\00:03:13.19 That's right, maybe we can look there in Deuteronomy. 00:03:13.22\00:03:16.06 Deuteronomy gives us a little picture, a window into 00:03:16.12\00:03:18.89 what God's true intent was in circumcision. 00:03:18.96\00:03:21.63 So in Deuteronomy chapter 10:16 He says something very 00:03:21.66\00:03:27.20 interesting, He says, therefore circumcise the 00:03:27.24\00:03:31.94 "foreskin of your heart and be stiff-necked no longer. " 00:03:31.97\00:03:36.58 Now I think stiff-necked means stubborn and circumcising 00:03:36.61\00:03:41.18 the foreskin of your heart now is talking about not an 00:03:41.25\00:03:44.99 external change but an internal change. - that's right! 00:03:45.02\00:03:48.06 There is one other verse were He touches on this in 00:03:48.09\00:03:51.96 Deuteronomy and it's in chapter 30:6 and I think it is 00:03:51.99\00:03:55.76 worthwhile for us to look at efforts as well. 00:03:55.80\00:03:57.50 It says, "And the Lord your God will circumcise your 00:03:57.53\00:04:01.14 "heart", there is that again, " and the heart of your 00:04:01.20\00:04:04.91 "descendents, to love the Lord your God with all your 00:04:04.97\00:04:08.44 "heart and with all your soul, that you may live. " 00:04:08.48\00:04:11.91 So the idea of circumcision, was a sign, and outward symbol 00:04:11.95\00:04:16.25 of an inward reality of a lack of trust in self, 00:04:16.28\00:04:20.96 a lack of trust in the flesh, but a desire to trust God 00:04:21.02\00:04:24.26 with everything and to love Him with the whole heart. 00:04:24.29\00:04:28.36 As long as that flesh, my own opinions, my own ideas, 00:04:28.43\00:04:32.30 and my own righteousness and devisings was getting in 00:04:32.37\00:04:36.17 the way, I couldn't love the Lord My God with all my heart. 00:04:36.24\00:04:39.47 We are getting a little picture now that circumcision 00:04:39.51\00:04:44.91 was intended to give an internal reality and what the 00:04:44.95\00:04:50.32 Jewish nation had began to do. 00:04:50.35\00:04:51.85 And Abraham understood it that way. - that's right! 00:04:51.92\00:04:54.66 but not all of his descendents. - right! 00:04:54.69\00:04:57.59 Then in time it began to be more and more looked 00:04:57.63\00:05:01.83 upon as simply a ticket, if you will, to a guarantee 00:05:01.86\00:05:06.03 to heaven if you want to look at it that way. 00:05:06.07\00:05:08.24 So rather than looking at the inward change that it was a 00:05:08.27\00:05:11.97 sign of, the Jewish nation began to rely upon 00:05:12.01\00:05:16.21 the external right of circumcision. 00:05:16.24\00:05:18.08 And the right of circumcision became their religion. 00:05:18.11\00:05:21.02 It became the substance, a sign that pointed to the 00:05:21.08\00:05:23.85 substance became the substance itself according to 00:05:23.89\00:05:26.32 the Jews and we see that in the book of Galatians. 00:05:26.35\00:05:28.79 If we go back to the book of Galatians Chapter 2 00:05:28.82\00:05:31.19 Paul is telling us and giving us this background for us. 00:05:31.23\00:05:35.43 He tells us of an experience there in Galatians 2: 11. 00:05:35.46\00:05:39.67 He says, "now when Peter had come to Antioch," 00:05:39.70\00:05:43.37 incidentally we're talking about Acts 15 when they 00:05:43.41\00:05:46.44 went back to Jerusalem in Acts 15 the church met 00:05:46.47\00:05:50.48 together and the church in that session decided as a 00:05:50.51\00:05:54.05 whole that we are not going to impose circumcision upon 00:05:54.08\00:05:57.35 the believers, but it was after that period of time we 00:05:57.39\00:06:00.72 find these things taking place. 00:06:00.76\00:06:03.66 After that period of time there were still those who 00:06:03.69\00:06:05.73 pushed the importance of circumcision. 00:06:05.76\00:06:08.66 Engrained in the culture. - so we see this in verse 11. 00:06:08.70\00:06:12.43 "Now when Peter had come back to Antioch, I withstood 00:06:12.47\00:06:15.67 "him to his face, because he was to be blamed; for 00:06:15.70\00:06:18.81 "before certain men came from James," this is James 00:06:18.84\00:06:21.71 the brother of Jesus who resided over the council in 00:06:21.74\00:06:24.58 Acts 15 and also the head of the early church. 00:06:24.61\00:06:27.52 These people came from James, in other words they came 00:06:27.55\00:06:31.85 from their Jewish church leaders. 00:06:31.89\00:06:33.36 "Before certain men came from James, Peter 00:06:33.39\00:06:36.69 "would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, 00:06:36.73\00:06:40.76 "he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who 00:06:40.80\00:06:44.30 "were of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews 00:06:44.33\00:06:47.80 "also played a hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas 00:06:47.84\00:06:51.84 "was carried away with their hypocrisy. " 00:06:51.87\00:06:53.81 This was the companion of Paul, his traveling companion. 00:06:53.84\00:06:58.01 So Peter when he sees these lifetime Jews coming in, even 00:06:58.08\00:07:01.38 though he had worked with the Gentiles, preached the gospel 00:07:01.42\00:07:04.59 to the Gentiles all of a sudden feels uncomfortable to be 00:07:04.62\00:07:07.32 with the Gentiles because they are this uncircumcised 00:07:07.36\00:07:10.26 class so he gets up and stops fellowshipping with them. 00:07:10.29\00:07:13.16 I mean he had been teaching them that they totally have 00:07:13.19\00:07:17.03 the same right to the gospel as the Jews do, but his 00:07:17.07\00:07:20.90 actions betray the gospel message. 00:07:20.94\00:07:23.30 As he moves over and sits with this other group of Jews 00:07:23.34\00:07:27.34 now leaving the Gentiles bewildered, even affecting 00:07:27.38\00:07:31.31 Barnabas and some of the other leaders there. 00:07:31.38\00:07:36.38 Keep in mind this is 17 years after Paul's conversion. 00:07:36.45\00:07:40.66 That was three to four years after Peter's because he 00:07:40.69\00:07:44.46 was in 20 years and it was so engrained in him that 00:07:44.49\00:07:48.20 it was still an issue. 00:07:48.23\00:07:49.56 That is some serious peer pressure really is what he was 00:07:49.60\00:07:53.27 experiencing and it was so engrained and he probably had 00:07:53.30\00:07:56.94 a lot of doubts even though in Acts 15 it appeared 00:07:56.97\00:07:59.81 he was very firm because God had shown him. 00:07:59.84\00:08:02.58 He gave him a vision in Acts chapter 10 to help 00:08:02.61\00:08:05.21 him see that the Gentiles could receive the gospel as 00:08:05.25\00:08:08.45 well and somehow this idea of the external rite of 00:08:08.52\00:08:11.65 circumcision being the pride of Israel, being the very thing 00:08:11.69\00:08:14.79 that if you do this then you are in and if 00:08:14.82\00:08:18.46 you don't have that then you are not one of us. 00:08:18.49\00:08:21.76 That was so strong that Peter was giving sanction to the 00:08:21.80\00:08:27.04 idea that circumcision was really an external rite 00:08:27.07\00:08:30.61 ignoring the reality that circumcision was a sign of an 00:08:30.64\00:08:36.41 actual real change in the heart. 00:08:36.44\00:08:38.58 When you think about it, which is more challenging? 00:08:38.61\00:08:42.72 Is it more challenging to change your external behavior 00:08:42.75\00:08:48.49 or to surrender your pride, your selfish will, the heart 00:08:48.52\00:08:54.20 issues that challenge every one of us are far more 00:08:54.23\00:09:00.07 difficult to yield. 00:09:00.10\00:09:01.64 Just like for a job example, people can conform to 00:09:01.67\00:09:04.24 outward things, like if I get a job and my boss wants me 00:09:04.27\00:09:07.28 to do a certain, follow certain behavior I can do it to 00:09:07.31\00:09:10.25 keep my job, but it doesn't mean I'm going to do it all the time. 00:09:10.28\00:09:13.15 It doesn't mean that it is in my heart. 00:09:13.18\00:09:14.52 That's right, that's right and if you look at Galatians 00:09:14.55\00:09:17.59 5:11 there is a verse there that really strikes me about 00:09:17.62\00:09:21.06 this and he says, "and I, brethren, if I still preach 00:09:21.09\00:09:24.59 "circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution?" 00:09:24.63\00:09:28.06 So apparently to preach circumcision would be to preach 00:09:28.10\00:09:32.90 the easy way. - that's right! 00:09:32.93\00:09:35.00 In other words to preach just making an outward changes 00:09:35.04\00:09:38.17 would be the easy way because he was calling on them to 00:09:38.21\00:09:40.98 realize the meaning of circumcision and to surrender 00:09:41.01\00:09:44.25 their will to the will of God, their heart to God. 00:09:44.28\00:09:47.48 That was creating the need for persecution. 00:09:47.52\00:09:50.19 That's right it's exactly the opposite of the way 00:09:50.22\00:09:52.15 people take it today, they that Paul in Galatians 00:09:52.19\00:09:54.06 is saying you guys are doing it too hard you have to 00:09:54.12\00:09:55.96 go the easy way. 00:09:56.02\00:09:57.36 The reality is he was speaking about the fact that you 00:09:57.39\00:09:59.26 guys are to surface, you have to go deeper. 00:09:59.29\00:10:01.16 That is exactly right, Amen. 00:10:01.20\00:10:03.23 Now circumcision is a sign as it were, of something much 00:10:03.26\00:10:08.00 more meaningful. - that's right we can pick it up in 00:10:08.07\00:10:14.01 Romans 4:11, the apostle Paul talking about Abraham 00:10:14.04\00:10:19.18 and his experience here says in verse 11 of Romans 4. 00:10:19.25\00:10:23.95 "And he received a sign of circumcision, a seal 00:10:23.99\00:10:28.26 "of the righteousness of faith which he had while still 00:10:28.29\00:10:31.93 "uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those 00:10:31.96\00:10:35.53 "who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that 00:10:35.56\00:10:38.93 "righteousness might be imputed to them also, and the 00:10:38.97\00:10:42.24 "father of circumcision to those who not only are of the 00:10:42.27\00:10:44.77 "circumcision," in other words it wasn't enough to be 00:10:44.81\00:10:46.91 circumcised, nothing wrong with being circumcised. 00:10:46.94\00:10:48.94 "But who also walked in the steps of the faith which our 00:10:48.98\00:10:53.25 "father Abraham had while still uncircumcised. " 00:10:53.28\00:10:56.75 In other words the circumcision was about a faith 00:10:56.79\00:11:00.26 experience, it wasn't an outward, the outward symbol was 00:11:00.32\00:11:04.23 only something that was tied to an inward reality. 00:11:04.26\00:11:07.30 You see these doctors and hospitals that go around with 00:11:07.30\00:11:10.03 this little badge that says they are a doctor. 00:11:10.07\00:11:11.67 Well I can steal one of those badges and put my picture 00:11:11.70\00:11:13.67 on it and walk around, but it means nothing because 00:11:13.70\00:11:15.54 I'm not a doctor. - I wouldn't be your patient! 00:11:15.57\00:11:17.34 - I appreciate that because there's not the reality. 00:11:17.37\00:11:20.88 So the sign means nothing unless there is an inward 00:11:20.91\00:11:23.75 reality there, but if there is an inward reality 00:11:23.78\00:11:26.58 the sign means everything. 00:11:26.61\00:11:28.12 It appears here in the issue that was driving the letter 00:11:28.15\00:11:32.32 to the Galatian church, they had essentially replaced 00:11:32.35\00:11:36.49 the substance with the sign. - that's right! 00:11:36.52\00:11:39.23 The apostle Paul continually is trying to take back the 00:11:39.26\00:11:43.90 true meaning of salvation and help it to become that 00:11:43.93\00:11:47.84 inward reality again because as long as we are telling 00:11:47.87\00:11:51.71 people that an outward change is going to do it, 00:11:51.74\00:11:54.11 we are robbing them of peace with God. 00:11:54.18\00:11:56.58 We are robbing them of the harmony they can have when 00:11:56.61\00:11:59.65 there will is called to be yielded to the will of God. 00:11:59.71\00:12:02.48 There is a few verses where he touches on this and 00:12:02.55\00:12:05.29 I would like to close our time here with those verses. 00:12:05.32\00:12:10.29 In Galatians 5:6 it says, "for in Christ Jesus neither 00:12:10.33\00:12:15.23 "circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, 00:12:15.26\00:12:18.40 "but faith working through love" 00:12:18.43\00:12:20.70 That's powerful and if you go to chapter 6:15 it says, 00:12:20.74\00:12:25.61 "for in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor 00:12:25.64\00:12:28.31 "uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation. " 00:12:28.34\00:12:32.21 In 1 Corinthians 7:19 it says, "neither circumcision 00:12:32.28\00:12:35.58 "or uncircumcision avails anything but keeping the 00:12:35.62\00:12:38.92 "Commandments of God is what matters. " 00:12:38.95\00:12:40.72 The apostle Paul keeps taking them to the real issue 00:12:40.76\00:12:44.23 and ultimately circumcision is a matter of the heart. 00:12:44.26\00:12:47.50 That's right it wasn't about circumcision, it is about 00:12:47.50\00:12:50.17 heart religion, it wasn't whether they were or weren't 00:12:50.20\00:12:52.83 circumcised but is the heart circumcised. 00:12:52.87\00:12:55.64 Has the heart been renewed through the grace of Christ? 00:12:55.70\00:12:58.37 Wow what a powerful message and we are out of time 00:12:58.41\00:13:02.08 here today, but we are going to dive back into the book 00:13:02.11\00:13:05.45 of Galatians and the next time we will open up and talk 00:13:05.48\00:13:08.78 about what justification is all about. 00:13:08.82\00:13:11.55 So I hope you'll come back and God bless. 00:13:11.59\00:13:14.29
