Welcome back to our study in the book of Galatians. 00:00:08.30\00:00:10.74 We are going to dive right back were we left off. 00:00:10.77\00:00:13.17 We were talking about the grace and peace that is given 00:00:13.21\00:00:16.71 to each one of us through God the Father and 00:00:16.75\00:00:18.58 our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:00:18.61\00:00:19.95 The apostle Paul, in Galatians 1:3 discusses this grace 00:00:19.98\00:00:25.39 and peace in a very brief way, just offering it. 00:00:25.42\00:00:29.26 I believe in what we need to spend a little more time 00:00:29.29\00:00:32.49 doing, where we were last time before the break, was 00:00:32.53\00:00:35.70 talking about these in a more flushed out way. 00:00:35.73\00:00:38.10 Right because this is Paul's standard salutation of 00:00:38.13\00:00:40.70 grace and peace and we can almost take it as a greeting 00:00:40.74\00:00:43.27 like Heh, how are you doing? 00:00:43.34\00:00:44.67 Instead of really grasping that he is expressing some 00:00:44.71\00:00:49.01 core gospel truth right here. 00:00:49.04\00:00:50.78 That's right. We talked about the grace of God being 00:00:50.81\00:00:53.21 the unmerited favor of God and at the same time that power 00:00:53.25\00:00:56.55 by which we are made alive and born-again through that 00:00:56.58\00:01:00.92 grace and it leaves the impression since none of us 00:01:00.96\00:01:04.66 deserve grace of God, and since none of us could merit 00:01:04.69\00:01:08.36 salvation then wouldn't everybody be saved? 00:01:08.40\00:01:11.97 Because God loves everyone an important verses that we 00:01:12.00\00:01:16.10 didn't look to in Ephesians 2: 8, 9 where it simply says 00:01:16.14\00:01:20.21 "that by grace we are saved through faith. " 00:01:20.24\00:01:24.48 So that brings in the choice of the human element. 00:01:24.51\00:01:27.82 In other words, the grace of God is offered to us freely. 00:01:27.85\00:01:31.52 The salvation of God is given to us freely, but our belief 00:01:31.55\00:01:35.22 in those promises, our belief in that grace of God to 00:01:35.26\00:01:38.46 change our hearts and lives is that faith by which we lay 00:01:38.49\00:01:41.63 hold of the grace of God. 00:01:41.66\00:01:43.33 So when we think about it in those terms we can then 00:01:43.37\00:01:48.34 reference Romans 5:1, where it says that having been 00:01:48.37\00:01:53.04 justified by faith, that faith by which we lay claim to 00:01:53.07\00:01:57.68 the grace of God, we have peace with God through 00:01:57.71\00:02:01.68 our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:02:01.72\00:02:03.05 Through that grace that is bringing us into harmony with 00:02:03.08\00:02:07.16 God no longer is our stubborn will preventing us from 00:02:07.19\00:02:11.39 having harmony with God, or peace with God. 00:02:11.43\00:02:13.73 That's right and we really need to flush that out 00:02:13.76\00:02:15.63 a little bit because the idea of peace with God has been 00:02:15.70\00:02:20.27 perverted into this concept that God is against me. 00:02:20.30\00:02:26.74 Because Jesus died for me, now God has found a way to 00:02:26.78\00:02:31.78 love me because of something Jesus did, because of 00:02:31.81\00:02:36.79 something I did as if God changes. 00:02:36.82\00:02:39.15 So the peace with God is something that happens because 00:02:39.19\00:02:42.82 God finally stops fighting, of course you know the 00:02:42.89\00:02:45.09 opposite of peace is war. 00:02:45.13\00:02:46.83 We were talking about a condition of peace, somebody 00:02:46.86\00:02:49.96 stops fighting and we would assume often times that it 00:02:50.00\00:02:53.10 must be God that has stopped fighting. 00:02:53.13\00:02:56.10 The reality is that when the gospel message comes out in 00:02:56.14\00:03:00.18 the salutation of Paul, "grace and peace from God the 00:03:00.21\00:03:04.15 "Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. " 00:03:04.21\00:03:06.11 What's happening is that the peace treaty is being 00:03:06.15\00:03:10.09 proclaimed from God's end, in essence God is saying, 00:03:10.12\00:03:13.99 I'm not holding anything against you, it makes 00:03:14.02\00:03:16.62 me think of the song of the 00:03:16.66\00:03:19.63 Angels when Jesus is born and the shepherds out 00:03:19.66\00:03:22.23 in the field in Luke chapter 2 where angels say, 00:03:22.30\00:03:25.67 "glory to God in the highest end on earth peace, 00:03:25.70\00:03:29.04 "goodwill toward men. " 00:03:29.07\00:03:30.71 In other words God is saying, I'm not fighting you, 00:03:30.77\00:03:33.54 but you have been fighting Me. 00:03:33.58\00:03:36.21 God invites us to lay down our weapons of warfare 00:03:36.24\00:03:40.25 and that is what Paul is talking about there Romans 5. 00:03:40.28\00:03:44.02 When we choose to lay down our weapons of warfare, 00:03:44.05\00:03:47.72 we receive justification by faith and have peace with God. 00:03:47.76\00:03:50.96 That's right, so we can surrender our will and lay 00:03:51.03\00:03:55.63 down our warfare, Jesus says my peace I give unto you. 00:03:55.66\00:04:00.37 So He is not wanting to fight with us, He's wanting us to 00:04:00.40\00:04:04.64 surrender our weapons so that we can be at peace with Him. 00:04:04.67\00:04:08.84 You know what I think about the idea of fighting God, 00:04:08.91\00:04:12.21 it brings me back to the apostle Paul. 00:04:12.25\00:04:14.78 If anybody knew what it was like to wrestle against the 00:04:14.82\00:04:19.45 grace and peace of God it was Paul himself before his 00:04:19.52\00:04:24.13 conversion and we can look at that briefly. 00:04:24.16\00:04:28.06 In Acts 9 we see a little picture of the apostle Paul's 00:04:28.10\00:04:34.77 warfare against God. 00:04:34.80\00:04:36.30 In Acts chapter 9 we see where Jesus meets Paul on the 00:04:36.34\00:04:41.54 road to Damascus and He says, "I am Jesus whom you are 00:04:41.58\00:04:46.45 "persecuting," I'm reading in Chapter 9:5, "it is hard for 00:04:46.48\00:04:51.32 "you to kick against the goads. " 00:04:51.35\00:04:53.29 Now a goad was a pointed instrument used to prod on an 00:04:53.32\00:04:57.19 animal. - right and if an animal didn't want to go forward 00:04:57.23\00:05:01.10 and was aware it was being prodded it would kick back 00:05:01.13\00:05:03.73 at the goad trying to get away from prodding him forward. 00:05:03.77\00:05:06.33 So apparently something was prodding Paul forward. 00:05:06.37\00:05:09.10 The Lord Jesus was saying, hey I'm prodding you forward 00:05:09.14\00:05:11.97 but you are fighting Me. 00:05:12.01\00:05:13.34 You are fighting against Me and so we have this picture 00:05:13.38\00:05:17.05 being painted, now how did that happen 00:05:17.08\00:05:18.68 or when did it happen? 00:05:18.71\00:05:20.05 I think one of the most powerful places were I am just 00:05:20.08\00:05:22.45 sure the Holy Spirit was prodding the conscience of the 00:05:22.48\00:05:25.55 apostle Paul was in Acts chapter 7 just before that. 00:05:25.59\00:05:29.92 In Acts chapter 7 Paul, is there called Saul before his 00:05:29.99\00:05:35.16 conversion, was standing by while the first Christian 00:05:35.20\00:05:40.34 martyr here, Stephen a great deacon, was giving an account 00:05:40.37\00:05:45.71 of the history of Israel and the experience of Israel and 00:05:45.74\00:05:51.05 what they had done to oppose the will of God. 00:05:51.08\00:05:53.68 How they had resisted the Holy Spirit and the leaders 00:05:53.72\00:05:58.62 got so upset that they stoned Stephen. 00:05:58.65\00:06:02.12 Now in the middle of this stoning something amazing 00:06:02.16\00:06:04.76 happens, Stephen looks up and sees Jesus. 00:06:04.79\00:06:10.17 He makes this appeal, or this plea or prayer if you will. 00:06:10.20\00:06:17.31 He says Lord charged not this sin against them. 00:06:17.34\00:06:20.68 Now can you imagine being the apostle Paul and you are 00:06:20.71\00:06:24.18 ordering this stoning and you look in the one that should 00:06:24.21\00:06:27.68 be angry with you, should be hateful toward you and saying, 00:06:27.72\00:06:31.15 "Lord do not charge this sin against them?" 00:06:31.19\00:06:34.06 I'm telling you his conscience had to have been pricked. 00:06:34.12\00:06:38.56 Instead of surrendering his heart, he fought all the 00:06:38.59\00:06:42.33 harder because right after that in Chapter 8 this great 00:06:42.36\00:06:45.90 persecution arose because the apostle Paul began to more 00:06:45.93\00:06:49.17 vehemently go after the Christians than ever before. 00:06:49.20\00:06:52.84 That's right, so obviously he's kicking against the goads 00:06:52.91\00:06:56.51 and it's obvious. 00:06:56.54\00:06:57.88 What's fascinating in the context of this is that we 00:06:57.91\00:07:02.28 mention the controversy over the book of Galatians today, 00:07:02.32\00:07:04.79 where there are Christians who sincerely believe 00:07:04.82\00:07:08.06 that the gospel is saying the law doesn't matter 00:07:08.09\00:07:11.29 to Christians anymore. 00:07:11.33\00:07:12.73 Only what we find Paul fighting against the gospel of 00:07:12.76\00:07:16.60 Stephen that Paul was fighting against in Stephen's 00:07:16.63\00:07:20.97 address in Acts 7:53 he arraigns those Jewish leaders 00:07:21.00\00:07:25.34 and says to them, you receive the law through the 00:07:25.37\00:07:29.11 direction of angels and you have not kept it. 00:07:29.14\00:07:32.78 So Stephen's gospel arraigned them for lawbreaking and Paul 00:07:32.81\00:07:37.55 got incensed and infuriated when it was pointed out that he 00:07:37.59\00:07:41.59 was not obeying the law of God, prior to his conversion. 00:07:41.62\00:07:45.56 So far doing away with the law of God, he was convicted of the 00:07:45.59\00:07:49.93 fact that he wasn't keeping the law of God 00:07:49.96\00:07:51.60 through Stephen's testimony. 00:07:51.63\00:07:53.37 Hmmm, that is exactly right. 00:07:53.40\00:07:55.04 In fact it was last thing that was said before they said 00:07:55.07\00:07:59.17 that's it, and they decided to stone him. 00:07:59.21\00:08:02.54 We could take no more, he challenged them and looked 00:08:02.58\00:08:05.11 right at them and said, you receive the law by the 00:08:05.15\00:08:07.65 direction of angels and have not kept it. 00:08:07.68\00:08:09.58 That was too much for them to handle and I think when 00:08:09.62\00:08:13.32 you look at this idea of the apostle Paul fighting this 00:08:13.36\00:08:17.29 conviction, you understand that Paul knew what it was like 00:08:17.33\00:08:21.20 to have a will that was stubborn. 00:08:21.23\00:08:24.27 To have what the Bible calls the flesh, a carnal nature 00:08:24.30\00:08:28.47 that resisted the will of God. 00:08:28.50\00:08:30.77 It didn't want to humble itself, it didn't want to admit 00:08:30.81\00:08:34.54 that it was wrong and so that hard heart was seen in the 00:08:34.58\00:08:37.65 apostle Paul, that is why the Lord Jesus said, it is hard 00:08:37.68\00:08:40.75 for you to kick against the goads. 00:08:40.78\00:08:42.12 But what the apostle brings out later in Galatians 00:08:42.15\00:08:45.02 Chapter 1, is a powerful couple of statements. 00:08:45.05\00:08:48.52 I would like to read these in Galatians 1:23. 00:08:48.56\00:08:51.93 "But they were hearing only," the Christian churches, 00:08:51.96\00:08:57.80 "he who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith he 00:08:57.83\00:09:02.80 "once tried to destroy. And they glorify God in me. " 00:09:02.84\00:09:07.38 No wonder they glorify God because here was enemy number 00:09:07.41\00:09:11.91 one of the Christian Church. 00:09:11.95\00:09:13.62 He was the one that they fear, the one that 00:09:13.65\00:09:16.02 they knew was after them. 00:09:16.05\00:09:17.69 He was well know as the one that was opposed to Christians 00:09:17.72\00:09:21.86 and now not only does he become a believer, but he turns 00:09:21.89\00:09:26.03 from enemy number one to evangelist number one. 00:09:26.06\00:09:29.86 If anybody understood the power of a changed life, 00:09:29.90\00:09:33.44 the power of the Gospel, it was the apostle Paul. 00:09:33.47\00:09:38.34 Absolutely, and so when we go back this is how he is 00:09:38.37\00:09:42.48 presenting Grace and peace and then he talks about how 00:09:42.54\00:09:46.28 the Lord Jesus gave Himself for our sins that He might 00:09:46.31\00:09:50.02 deliver us, and that is what he is talking 00:09:50.05\00:09:52.12 about this deliverance. 00:09:52.15\00:09:53.52 I want to touch on this giving, 00:09:53.56\00:09:56.83 Jesus giving Himself for our sins where the Grace of God 00:09:56.86\00:10:00.66 is magnified, there is a transaction taking place here. 00:10:00.70\00:10:04.47 You are giving one thing for another thing. 00:10:04.50\00:10:06.63 It's like when you go to the store and you give money and 00:10:06.67\00:10:08.10 you get back a certain product. 00:10:08.14\00:10:09.94 From a healing perspective, if you go out and pay a 00:10:09.97\00:10:14.08 substantial amount of money, pay $100 for something. 00:10:14.11\00:10:18.15 If you get that thing home and it ends up being a piece of 00:10:18.18\00:10:21.78 junk, whatever it is, you are going to find a use for it. 00:10:21.82\00:10:24.35 You are not just going to throw it away, it costs you 00:10:24.39\00:10:26.89 $100, use it as a paperweight or something. 00:10:26.92\00:10:29.02 A coaster - a coaster or whatever because you paid 00:10:29.06\00:10:35.03 that money for it. 00:10:35.06\00:10:36.53 Here is a transaction that is made where God has paid a 00:10:36.56\00:10:40.27 price that is an infinite price, the greatest price that 00:10:40.34\00:10:43.44 has never been paid and He knew what He was getting. 00:10:43.47\00:10:46.68 And once more it doesn't say He gave Himself for us, 00:10:46.71\00:10:49.88 it says He gave Himself for our sins. 00:10:49.91\00:10:52.68 So He gave Himself for we are often times tempted to 00:10:52.71\00:10:55.88 say, I hear that God loves me but could He accept 00:10:55.92\00:10:59.05 me because of my sins? 00:10:59.09\00:11:00.99 Your sins are what He bought. - and that is right. 00:11:01.02\00:11:03.43 Somebody once said that if you go to the store and 00:11:03.46\00:11:06.16 give money for something and they don't give you 00:11:06.19\00:11:09.46 what you paid for, you will call them a crook 00:11:09.50\00:11:12.77 or something else. - right, right. 00:11:12.80\00:11:15.54 Jesus paid for our sins, 00:11:15.57\00:11:17.54 why don't we give them to Him? 00:11:17.57\00:11:19.37 We need to surrender that which He paid for and to think we 00:11:19.41\00:11:24.11 aren't worthy enough to give Him that is to 00:11:24.15\00:11:28.55 ignore the fact that He knew what He was getting 00:11:28.58\00:11:31.02 when He bought us. 00:11:31.05\00:11:32.39 Right, that is what Grace is all about. 00:11:32.42\00:11:33.76 So when we look at the apostle Paul's statement here 00:11:33.79\00:11:35.86 "Grace to you and peace from God the Father, 00:11:35.89\00:11:38.86 "and the Lord Jesus Christ. " 00:11:38.89\00:11:40.96 The apostle Paul is making a point that God is 00:11:41.00\00:11:45.77 offering to us, in spite of the fact that we are sinful. 00:11:45.80\00:11:50.17 In the full light of the fact that we are sinful, 00:11:50.21\00:11:54.88 He is offering grace and peace to us. 00:11:54.91\00:11:57.58 How does it come to us? 00:11:57.61\00:11:58.95 Through the Lord Jesus Christ who gave Himself for our 00:11:58.98\00:12:02.38 sins, the reason that we can fully accept this gospel 00:12:02.42\00:12:05.95 is because the Lord Jesus has made a trade. 00:12:05.99\00:12:08.09 He has taken those sins and He is more than willing 00:12:08.12\00:12:11.39 to take those sins when we give ourselves to Him. 00:12:11.43\00:12:15.16 But it goes on and it says, "that He might deliver us 00:12:15.20\00:12:18.93 "from the present evil. " This present evil. 00:12:18.97\00:12:22.20 I believe that this last portion here is really 00:12:22.24\00:12:25.94 hitting on the issue that was existing here in 00:12:25.97\00:12:29.61 the Galatian church. 00:12:29.68\00:12:31.01 There are many people who believe that, that gospel was 00:12:31.05\00:12:34.38 so that we could continue in evil. 00:12:34.42\00:12:36.45 Jesus died so we don't have to keep the law. 00:12:36.48\00:12:38.92 The apostle Paul, right here in his salutation is 00:12:38.99\00:12:42.56 opposing that very thought by saying, no the Gospel 00:12:42.59\00:12:46.33 is so that you can be rescued from your life of sin. 00:12:46.36\00:12:50.07 The Gospel is so that you can be delivered from 00:12:50.10\00:12:53.13 this present evil age. 00:12:53.17\00:12:54.50 That is right, Amen! So that is what as we open 00:12:54.54\00:12:57.71 up the book of Galatians and dig into, that is 00:12:57.74\00:13:01.01 what we are going to unpack and see that deliverance 00:13:01.04\00:13:03.71 from many different angles here. 00:13:03.75\00:13:05.08 The apostle Paul wants to make it very clear to us 00:13:05.11\00:13:07.02 because he wants us to experience the deliverance 00:13:07.05\00:13:09.08 that he experienced. 00:13:09.12\00:13:11.05 It is a blessed, beautiful message that we find 00:13:11.09\00:13:14.66 in the book of Galatians and so we are excited as we 00:13:14.69\00:13:17.13 continue on through this series. 00:13:17.16\00:13:18.89 We hope you will continue to join us. 00:13:18.93\00:13:20.40 Thanks for being with us today and I hope 00:13:20.46\00:13:21.86 you will tune in next time. - Amen! 00:13:21.93\00:13:24.37
