Shall we bow our heads for prayer? 00:01:11.02\00:01:14.64 Our Father and our God, 00:01:14.67\00:01:15.81 we thank You for the awesome privilege 00:01:15.84\00:01:20.13 of coming to Your house to sing praises to Your name, 00:01:20.16\00:01:26.46 to speak with You in prayer 00:01:26.49\00:01:29.46 and to hear Your voice speaking to us through Your word. 00:01:29.49\00:01:34.90 We ask Father, 00:01:34.93\00:01:35.96 for the enlightenment of your Holy Spirit. 00:01:35.99\00:01:39.43 Help us to learn the lessons 00:01:39.46\00:01:40.96 which will be beneficial to our spiritual life. 00:01:40.99\00:01:44.72 As we open Your word, hover over this place 00:01:44.75\00:01:50.11 through the ministration of Your spirit and Your angels. 00:01:50.14\00:01:53.34 We pray this in the precious name 00:01:53.37\00:01:55.69 of your beloved Son Jesus, amen. 00:01:55.72\00:02:01.00 In the news in the last several weeks 00:02:01.03\00:02:03.68 has been a very interesting document. 00:02:03.71\00:02:07.73 It is a very ancient document in fact scholars believe 00:02:07.76\00:02:11.74 that it was written probably 00:02:11.77\00:02:16.37 at least the year 180 of the Christian era. 00:02:16.40\00:02:23.85 It was discovered actually in 1971 00:02:23.88\00:02:27.92 in Nag Hammadi in the Egyptian desert. 00:02:27.95\00:02:33.00 We know that even though this particular manuscript 00:02:33.03\00:02:36.39 is probably dated to 280, 00:02:36.42\00:02:40.02 it was actually in existence already 00:02:40.05\00:02:42.81 as I mentioned in the year 180. 00:02:42.84\00:02:46.23 And the reason for that is because 00:02:46.26\00:02:48.12 one of the early church fathers, Irenaeus 00:02:48.15\00:02:51.81 who lived approximately 180 AD 00:02:51.84\00:02:55.82 speaks about this gospel which has been discovered 00:02:55.85\00:03:01.50 the name of the gospel is the Gospel of Judas. 00:03:01.53\00:03:06.31 Basically Irenaeus says this, 00:03:06.34\00:03:09.98 "Judas was acquainted with the truth 00:03:10.01\00:03:13.93 as no others were." 00:03:13.96\00:03:15.57 Irenaeus is saying about this gospel. 00:03:15.60\00:03:19.10 "And had produced a fabricated work to this effect 00:03:19.13\00:03:24.49 which they entitle the Gospel of Thomas." 00:03:24.52\00:03:28.81 In other words, Irenaeus is saying 00:03:28.84\00:03:30.50 that around the year 180 there was a gospel, 00:03:30.53\00:03:33.65 the Gospel of Judas 00:03:33.68\00:03:35.60 which was in existence it was a Gnostic gospel 00:03:35.63\00:03:38.95 where those who actually wrote it were teaching 00:03:38.98\00:03:43.50 that Judas was the closest of all of the disciples 00:03:43.53\00:03:48.34 and that he was acquainted with the truths of Jesus 00:03:48.37\00:03:52.21 more than any of the other disciples. 00:03:52.24\00:03:55.80 It's interesting to notice the content of this gospel. 00:03:55.83\00:04:00.39 It actually rehabilitates 00:04:00.42\00:04:03.51 the Judas of the biblical gospels. 00:04:03.54\00:04:06.71 In fact, it tells us 00:04:06.74\00:04:08.05 that Judas was the favorite disciple of Jesus 00:04:08.08\00:04:13.14 with whom Jesus shared 00:04:13.17\00:04:14.20 the deepest mysteries of the kingdom. 00:04:14.23\00:04:18.16 Now this gospel there is no doubt was a Gnostic gospel, 00:04:18.19\00:04:22.58 it was written by the Gnostics. 00:04:22.61\00:04:25.23 And I need to share with you a little bit about 00:04:25.26\00:04:27.37 what the Gnostics believed. 00:04:27.40\00:04:30.29 They believed that the Old Testament God 00:04:30.32\00:04:33.40 the Creator was actually an evil demigod. 00:04:33.43\00:04:39.43 And the reason why He was evil 00:04:39.46\00:04:41.12 is because He created the material world. 00:04:41.15\00:04:44.19 And according to the Gnostics matter is evil. 00:04:44.22\00:04:48.39 They taught that imprisoned inside the material body 00:04:48.42\00:04:54.63 is what they called gnosis. 00:04:54.66\00:04:57.55 The word gnosis in Greek means knowledge. 00:04:57.58\00:05:01.94 They believe that gnosis was incarcerated 00:05:01.97\00:05:04.87 within the fleshly material body. 00:05:04.90\00:05:09.66 And that the epitome of the desire 00:05:09.69\00:05:12.47 of every human being should be 00:05:12.50\00:05:14.77 the liberation of gnosis or the liberation 00:05:14.80\00:05:18.93 of that special knowledge or wisdom 00:05:18.96\00:05:21.62 which was contained inside the evil material body. 00:05:21.65\00:05:28.02 In other words the ultimate spiritual goal in life 00:05:28.05\00:05:31.90 was to liberate gnosis 00:05:31.93\00:05:34.31 which many Christians call the soul today 00:05:34.34\00:05:37.25 from the material body 00:05:37.28\00:05:39.27 so that the individual could enter the fullest 00:05:39.30\00:05:43.72 and most complete spear of acknowledge. 00:05:43.75\00:05:47.72 This is where the Gospel of Judas comes in. 00:05:47.75\00:05:51.05 You see, this gospel says that Judas was the closest 00:05:51.08\00:05:55.29 of the apostles of Jesus to the Lord. 00:05:55.32\00:05:58.96 It teaches that Jesus had a body 00:05:58.99\00:06:00.85 and of course according to their view the body is evil, 00:06:00.88\00:06:04.96 because it's composed of matter. 00:06:04.99\00:06:08.68 And so Jesus more than anything 00:06:08.71\00:06:10.59 desired to liberate gnosis from within Him. 00:06:10.62\00:06:14.94 But He had this cumbersome body composed of matter 00:06:14.97\00:06:18.35 and so Jesus actually whispered in Judas's ear and He said, 00:06:18.38\00:06:24.21 "Judas I need to have some way to be liberated 00:06:24.24\00:06:28.60 from this cumbersome body would you please deliver me 00:06:28.63\00:06:34.59 to the authorities so that they will kill me 00:06:34.62\00:06:37.96 so that gnosis can be delivered from this physical body." 00:06:37.99\00:06:44.57 Now let me ask you the question. 00:06:44.60\00:06:46.96 Does this sound like the biblical gospels? 00:06:46.99\00:06:50.70 This is totally opposite, totally different 00:06:50.73\00:06:54.32 than what the biblical gospels teach about Jesus Christ. 00:06:54.35\00:06:58.47 And yet I find it amazing that many Christians today 00:06:58.50\00:07:02.09 will read "The Da Vinci Code," 00:07:02.12\00:07:04.77 they'll watch the movie "The Passion of the Christ" 00:07:04.80\00:07:07.51 and they'll read the Gospel of Judas 00:07:07.54\00:07:09.75 and they'll say well, maybe there's some information 00:07:09.78\00:07:13.86 that we didn't know about, maybe perhaps 00:07:13.89\00:07:17.31 the Bible isn't exactly acrid in its description. 00:07:17.34\00:07:21.19 It's amazing how Christians will accept extra biblical 00:07:21.22\00:07:25.00 sources as being trustworthy and they will question 00:07:25.03\00:07:28.88 the authority of Holy Scripture. 00:07:28.91\00:07:33.12 The question is this morning 00:07:33.15\00:07:34.47 who really was Judas Iscariot? 00:07:34.50\00:07:40.59 We are in the midst of a series 00:07:40.62\00:07:42.82 called great apostasy of the Bible 00:07:42.85\00:07:44.78 and today we're gonna study about the apostasy of Judas. 00:07:44.81\00:07:48.08 We're gonna notice what the Bible really has to say 00:07:48.11\00:07:51.17 about this enigmatic figure Judas Iscariot. 00:07:51.20\00:07:57.14 Now we've studied in our previous lecture 00:07:57.17\00:07:59.01 actually it was the one on Absalom. 00:07:59.04\00:08:01.66 That Absalom was actually a miniature copy of Lucifer 00:08:01.69\00:08:07.11 and his rebellion in heaven. 00:08:07.14\00:08:09.72 And we studied that Lucifer had four basic problems. 00:08:09.75\00:08:16.06 Number one, he was wise 00:08:16.09\00:08:18.99 and you say, well, that's not a problem. 00:08:19.02\00:08:20.48 It's a problem when you get caught up in your wisdom, 00:08:20.51\00:08:24.78 in other words, when you corrupt your wisdom. 00:08:24.81\00:08:26.72 So what I'm going to mention now 00:08:26.75\00:08:28.56 has to do with the corruption of these qualities. 00:08:28.59\00:08:31.32 We're told in scripture that Lucifer was wise. 00:08:31.35\00:08:35.22 He was rich, he had a position of power, 00:08:35.25\00:08:39.62 he was powerful. 00:08:39.65\00:08:41.55 And of course we studied that he was very beautiful. 00:08:41.58\00:08:45.95 None of these four things are negative in themselves. 00:08:45.98\00:08:49.63 None of them are intrinsically evil, 00:08:49.66\00:08:53.12 but they can be corrupted 00:08:53.15\00:08:55.23 when these characteristics become focused 00:08:55.26\00:08:58.38 and centered on self. 00:08:58.41\00:09:01.50 We're gonna notice in our study 00:09:01.53\00:09:02.98 that the same four pitfalls of Lucifer 00:09:03.01\00:09:05.82 were the pitfalls of Judas. 00:09:05.85\00:09:08.65 And those four things once again intelligence and wisdom, 00:09:08.68\00:09:13.94 riches, power and physical beauty, 00:09:13.97\00:09:19.74 physical attraction. 00:09:19.77\00:09:22.41 Allow me to say a few things about the qualities, 00:09:22.44\00:09:25.97 the personal qualities of Judas Iscariot. 00:09:26.00\00:09:30.08 We know that Julius was more physically imposing 00:09:30.11\00:09:34.37 then any of the other apostles. 00:09:34.40\00:09:37.83 We also know that he was most likely 00:09:37.86\00:09:40.66 more intelligent then any of them. 00:09:40.69\00:09:44.48 We also know that Judas first step 00:09:44.51\00:09:47.06 for power more than any of the other disciples. 00:09:47.09\00:09:50.06 He was the ringleader and of course 00:09:50.09\00:09:52.21 it goes without saying that Judas coveted money 00:09:52.24\00:09:58.96 and material possessions. 00:09:58.99\00:10:01.13 I like to call them the four sins of pride. 00:10:01.16\00:10:06.88 We know that Judas was a shrewd politician 00:10:06.91\00:10:10.05 and he was an able financier. 00:10:10.08\00:10:13.00 His whole life seed to revolve around position and money. 00:10:13.03\00:10:19.33 And the idea that he had 00:10:19.36\00:10:21.16 that he was wiser more intelligent 00:10:21.19\00:10:24.59 and more capable than his fellows. 00:10:24.62\00:10:29.09 I'd like to read a couple of statements 00:10:29.12\00:10:31.56 actually there's three statements 00:10:31.59\00:10:33.44 from the Spirit of Prophecy where Ellen White describes 00:10:33.47\00:10:37.97 the personal qualities of Judas Iscariot. 00:10:38.00\00:10:42.19 Desire of Ages, page 294 she says this. 00:10:42.22\00:10:46.30 "He was of commanding appearance." 00:10:46.33\00:10:49.79 By the way she goes on to say that the reason why, 00:10:49.82\00:10:52.59 Judas, you know the Bible seems to have 00:10:52.62\00:10:54.26 two contradictory accounts. 00:10:54.29\00:10:56.02 I said seems to have, 00:10:56.05\00:10:58.00 because one account says that he hanged himself, 00:10:58.03\00:11:00.00 another account in the Book of Acts says 00:11:00.03\00:11:02.18 that he burst open and the dogs came and ate him. 00:11:02.21\00:11:05.80 So how can you reconcile those two? 00:11:05.83\00:11:07.85 Ellen White explains it beautifully. 00:11:07.88\00:11:09.27 She says that Judas was a very heavy man, 00:11:09.30\00:11:11.37 he was very tall, very imposing. 00:11:11.40\00:11:14.19 And he hung himself on a limb over a cliff 00:11:14.22\00:11:17.40 and his body was so heavy that it broke the branch, 00:11:17.43\00:11:20.60 he fell a great distance to the ground, 00:11:20.63\00:11:22.93 he burst open and then the dogs came and ate him. 00:11:22.96\00:11:26.92 Very interesting. 00:11:26.95\00:11:28.79 He was physically more imposing than any of the other disciples. 00:11:28.82\00:11:31.85 She says "He was of commanding appearance, 00:11:31.88\00:11:34.88 a man of keen discernment and executive ability." 00:11:34.91\00:11:40.16 There's the wisdom. 00:11:40.19\00:11:41.86 "And they the disciples commended him to Jesus 00:11:41.89\00:11:46.43 as one who would greatly assist Him in his work. 00:11:46.46\00:11:50.81 They were surprised that Jesus received him so coolly." 00:11:50.84\00:11:57.36 In another statement that we find in the Bible Commentary 00:11:57.39\00:12:00.47 volume 5 page 1001 and 1002. 00:12:00.50\00:12:04.04 We find this description. "But Judas was a speculator." 00:12:04.07\00:12:09.56 He would have fit very well at Wall Street. 00:12:09.59\00:12:14.36 "He thought that he could manage the finances of the church, 00:12:14.39\00:12:18.89 and by his sharpness in business get gain. 00:12:18.92\00:12:25.58 He was divided in heart. 00:12:25.61\00:12:28.23 He loved the praise of the world. 00:12:28.26\00:12:32.14 He refused to give up the world for Christ. 00:12:32.17\00:12:35.58 He never committed his eternal interests to Christ. 00:12:35.61\00:12:40.66 He had a superficial religion, 00:12:40.69\00:12:44.03 and therefore he speculated upon his Master 00:12:44.06\00:12:47.78 and betrayed Him to the priests, being fully persuaded 00:12:47.81\00:12:51.20 that Christ would not allow Himself to be taken. 00:12:51.23\00:12:55.86 Judas was a religious fraud. 00:12:55.89\00:12:59.23 He held up a high standard for others, 00:12:59.26\00:13:01.61 but he himself utterly failed to reach the Bible standard. 00:13:01.64\00:13:05.77 He did not bring the religion of Christ into his life." 00:13:05.80\00:13:11.55 Keen business ability, intelligent, smart, sharp, 00:13:11.58\00:13:19.07 according to the description. 00:13:19.10\00:13:21.29 Very much in love with money 00:13:21.32\00:13:23.62 and very much a physically imposing figure. 00:13:23.65\00:13:28.80 Desire of Ages, page 717 00:13:28.83\00:13:30.91 we find a description of where his problem was. 00:13:30.94\00:13:35.39 "Judas was highly regarded by the disciples 00:13:35.42\00:13:40.49 and had great influence over them." 00:13:40.52\00:13:44.21 Now I want you to notice 00:13:44.24\00:13:46.05 and want to underline certain words. 00:13:46.08\00:13:48.64 "He himself had a high opinion 00:13:48.67\00:13:53.27 of his own qualifications." 00:13:53.30\00:13:56.39 Is that true of Lucifer? Oh, yes. 00:13:56.42\00:13:59.94 "And looked upon his brethren 00:13:59.97\00:14:02.12 as greatly inferior to him in judgment and ability. 00:14:02.15\00:14:08.70 They did not see their opportunities, he thought, 00:14:08.73\00:14:11.66 and take advantage of circumstances. 00:14:11.69\00:14:15.19 The church would never prosper 00:14:15.22\00:14:17.64 with such shortsighted men as leaders." 00:14:17.67\00:14:22.68 That is the disciples. 00:14:22.71\00:14:24.74 "Judas summed up all the disciples." 00:14:24.77\00:14:28.20 I'm synthesizing because Ellen White 00:14:28.23\00:14:29.88 even mention certain disciples by name 00:14:29.91\00:14:32.05 and what Judas thought about them. 00:14:32.08\00:14:35.09 "Judas summed up all the disciples, 00:14:35.12\00:14:36.96 and flattered himself that the church 00:14:36.99\00:14:40.03 would often be brought into perplexity 00:14:40.06\00:14:43.05 and embarrassment 00:14:43.08\00:14:44.62 if it were not for his ability as a manager. 00:14:44.65\00:14:50.15 Judas regarded himself as the capable one, 00:14:50.18\00:14:54.57 who could not be overreached. 00:14:54.60\00:14:57.78 In his own estimation he was an honor to the cause, 00:14:57.81\00:15:02.65 and as such he always represented himself." 00:15:02.68\00:15:08.73 Do you see where the problem is? 00:15:08.76\00:15:11.52 He had a high opinion of himself and his wisdom, 00:15:11.55\00:15:15.94 and his intelligence, and his stature, 00:15:15.97\00:15:20.35 and his position. 00:15:20.38\00:15:23.13 But he was attracted to Jesus. 00:15:23.16\00:15:25.94 In fact, did you know probably many of you do 00:15:25.97\00:15:29.33 that he actually offered his services to Jesus. 00:15:29.36\00:15:35.35 Notice Matthew 8:19-21. 00:15:35.38\00:15:38.92 Many people fail to realize that this is Judas. 00:15:38.95\00:15:42.63 It says there in Matthew 8:19-21. 00:15:42.66\00:15:47.16 "Then a certain scribe came and said to Him, 00:15:47.19\00:15:51.33 'Teacher, I will follow You wherever you go.'" 00:15:51.36\00:15:57.00 And Jesus said to him, 00:15:57.03\00:15:59.68 "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, 00:15:59.71\00:16:05.85 but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." 00:16:05.88\00:16:11.10 Did you know that that was Judas 00:16:11.13\00:16:13.43 that was offering his services to Jesus? 00:16:13.46\00:16:16.14 He was saying I will be one of your disciples. 00:16:16.17\00:16:18.90 I offer my services as one of your disciples. 00:16:18.93\00:16:24.20 Now why would Jesus say the birds of the air have nests 00:16:24.23\00:16:28.36 and the foxes have holes, 00:16:28.39\00:16:30.52 but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head. 00:16:30.55\00:16:33.19 Because He was telling Judas 00:16:33.22\00:16:34.79 if you're in this for the position 00:16:34.82\00:16:37.27 and for the money it's not gonna happen. 00:16:37.30\00:16:42.80 You're not gonna get fame 00:16:42.83\00:16:44.50 and you're not going to get riches 00:16:44.53\00:16:46.92 from your connection with me. 00:16:46.95\00:16:50.71 Desire of Ages, page 716, we find these words. 00:16:50.74\00:16:55.97 "He felt" now this is amazing, 00:16:56.00\00:16:58.35 "He felt a desire to be changed." 00:16:58.38\00:17:02.50 He wanted to be changed but partially. 00:17:02.53\00:17:07.25 "He felt a desire to be changed in character in life, 00:17:07.28\00:17:11.04 and he hoped to experience this 00:17:11.07\00:17:13.12 through connecting himself with Jesus. 00:17:13.15\00:17:17.02 The Savior did not repulse Judas. 00:17:17.05\00:17:20.04 He gave him a place among the twelve. 00:17:20.07\00:17:22.64 He trusted him to do the work of an evangelist. 00:17:22.67\00:17:26.06 He endowed him with power to heal the sick 00:17:26.09\00:17:28.80 and to cast out devils. 00:17:28.83\00:17:31.24 But Judas did not come to the point" now listen to this 00:17:31.27\00:17:34.52 "of surrendering himself fully to Christ. 00:17:34.55\00:17:39.35 He did not give up his worldly ambition." 00:17:39.38\00:17:43.54 That's position, that's powered by the way. 00:17:43.57\00:17:45.54 "His worldly ambition or his love for money. 00:17:45.57\00:17:50.85 While he accepted the position of a ministry of Christ, 00:17:50.88\00:17:54.09 he did not bring himself under the divine molding. 00:17:54.12\00:17:58.29 He felt that he could retain his own judgment and opinions, 00:17:58.32\00:18:02.76 and he cultivated a disposition to criticize and accuse." 00:18:02.79\00:18:10.01 Now as we study along you're gonna notice 00:18:10.04\00:18:11.89 that the character of Judas is the character of Satan 00:18:11.92\00:18:16.41 because the very same four things 00:18:16.44\00:18:18.53 which led to the fall of Lucifer in heaven 00:18:18.56\00:18:21.14 where the four things 00:18:21.17\00:18:22.72 which led to the fall a Judas Iscariot. 00:18:22.75\00:18:25.49 He was a small-scale copy of Satan. 00:18:25.52\00:18:29.39 And you can tell that Satan was working upon his heart. 00:18:29.42\00:18:32.58 And so Judas offers his services and Jesus says 00:18:32.61\00:18:35.73 "Okay, I will choose you, 00:18:35.76\00:18:38.98 I will include you among the twelve." 00:18:39.01\00:18:42.63 Now I want you to notice 00:18:42.66\00:18:44.81 what we find in the Gospel of Mark 3:13. 00:18:44.84\00:18:50.77 Here we have the calling of the twelve. 00:18:50.80\00:18:52.39 See, the offering of Judas to serve Jesus 00:18:52.42\00:18:56.83 and become one of the disciples happened before 00:18:56.86\00:18:59.38 and evidently the disciples continued insisting upon Jesus 00:18:59.41\00:19:03.46 saying, "this is a good asset for the church, 00:19:03.49\00:19:06.20 you need to include him among the twelve." 00:19:06.23\00:19:07.99 So Jesus says "Okay, I will choose him 00:19:08.02\00:19:10.65 and I will include him among the twelve." 00:19:10.68\00:19:13.71 It says there "And He went up on the mountain 00:19:13.74\00:19:16.10 and call to Him those He Himself wanted. 00:19:16.13\00:19:19.59 And they came to Him. 00:19:19.62\00:19:21.86 Then He appointed twelve, 00:19:21.89\00:19:23.75 that they might be with Him 00:19:23.78\00:19:25.75 and that He might send them out to preach 00:19:25.78\00:19:28.36 and to have power to heal sicknesses 00:19:28.39\00:19:30.67 and to cast out demons. 00:19:30.70\00:19:32.57 Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter, 00:19:32.60\00:19:35.39 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, 00:19:35.42\00:19:39.10 to whom He gave the name Boanerges, 00:19:39.13\00:19:41.66 that is, 'Sons of Thunders.' 00:19:41.69\00:19:44.34 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, 00:19:44.37\00:19:47.59 Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, 00:19:47.62\00:19:50.96 Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite" 00:19:50.99\00:19:53.48 and now notice last on the list 00:19:53.51\00:19:57.93 and there's a special purpose for that. 00:19:57.96\00:20:00.71 "And Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. 00:20:00.74\00:20:06.13 And they went into the house." 00:20:06.16\00:20:11.44 It's interesting to notice that 00:20:11.47\00:20:13.68 Judas then became part of the inner circle 00:20:13.71\00:20:18.65 of the followers of Jesus. 00:20:18.68\00:20:20.44 He was an insider, he wasn't an outside. 00:20:20.47\00:20:24.49 This is important, because in our next study 00:20:24.52\00:20:27.78 we're gonna talk about the antichrist. 00:20:27.81\00:20:30.78 The antichrist is not some blasphemous 00:20:30.81\00:20:32.67 individual from outside 00:20:32.70\00:20:34.50 the antichrist will be an insider. 00:20:34.53\00:20:36.65 We're gonna notice in our study. 00:20:36.68\00:20:38.06 Who will bear the characteristics of Satan 00:20:38.09\00:20:40.68 and particularly of Judas. 00:20:40.71\00:20:44.41 Ellen White says speaking about Judas 00:20:44.44\00:20:47.09 and his influence on the inner circle. 00:20:47.12\00:20:49.76 She says that "Judas manifested a continuous 00:20:49.79\00:20:53.83 secret and subtle and antagonism against Christ. 00:20:53.86\00:21:00.15 Education page 92. 00:21:00.18\00:21:02.91 You see if you seeing Judas on the surface 00:21:02.94\00:21:05.47 it would have look like he was supporting Jesus, 00:21:05.50\00:21:08.39 he was in favor of Jesus, 00:21:08.42\00:21:10.18 but when Jesus wasn't around, 00:21:10.21\00:21:12.64 and he was with the disciples in an underhanded way 00:21:12.67\00:21:15.64 he tried to undermine the work of Jesus in a secretive fashion. 00:21:15.67\00:21:22.67 Now let's go to the moment when Jesus fed the 5,000. 00:21:22.70\00:21:27.18 It's interesting what Jesus had to say 00:21:27.21\00:21:29.90 immediately after feeding the 5,000. 00:21:29.93\00:21:32.08 Go with me to John 6 and we'll read verse 64 00:21:32.11\00:21:35.44 and then we'll jump down to verse 70. 00:21:35.47\00:21:37.92 John 6:64 it says, 00:21:37.95\00:21:41.46 "But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus says. 00:21:41.49\00:21:44.98 "For Jesus knew from the beginning, 00:21:45.01\00:21:48.15 who they were who did not believe, 00:21:48.18\00:21:50.81 and who would betray Him." 00:21:50.84\00:21:53.57 And then we jump down to verse 70. 00:21:53.60\00:21:55.85 "Jesus answered them, 00:21:55.88\00:21:58.06 Did I not choose you, the Twelve?" 00:21:58.09\00:22:01.81 And now notice this and one of you is a diabolos. 00:22:01.84\00:22:08.06 "One of you is a devil." 00:22:08.09\00:22:12.63 Did Jesus know what was in the heart of Judas 00:22:12.66\00:22:15.38 from the very start? Yes. 00:22:15.41\00:22:17.50 He spoke of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon 00:22:17.53\00:22:20.62 for it was he who would betray Him 00:22:20.65\00:22:23.10 being one of the twelve. 00:22:23.13\00:22:26.26 Now it's interested to know 00:22:26.29\00:22:27.32 what's the previous context of this. 00:22:27.35\00:22:29.42 Jesus had fed 5,000 and the people were impressed. 00:22:29.45\00:22:33.80 They said, well, this guy has to be the Messiah. 00:22:33.83\00:22:37.08 Nobody could feed 5,000 people 00:22:37.11\00:22:39.52 with five loaves and two fishes, its an impossibility. 00:22:39.55\00:22:44.42 And so Judas actually went among the people, 00:22:44.45\00:22:48.96 among the molted and he said, 00:22:48.99\00:22:50.21 wouldn't it be great if this man became King in Israel? 00:22:50.24\00:22:55.53 Just think what He could do to the Romans? 00:22:55.56\00:22:59.28 The army's wouldn't even have to carry provisions. 00:22:59.31\00:23:02.91 He could say abracadabra 00:23:02.94\00:23:05.85 and lo, behold enough food to feed everyone. 00:23:05.88\00:23:10.61 Do you know as a result according to John 6:15 00:23:10.64\00:23:14.42 the people tried to forcefully take Jesus and make Him king. 00:23:14.45\00:23:19.68 Did you know that Judas was behind a plot? 00:23:19.71\00:23:23.30 Because he wanted power, he wanted position, 00:23:23.33\00:23:28.17 he wanted a place of influence. 00:23:28.20\00:23:30.46 Notice Desire of Ages pages 718 and 719. 00:23:30.49\00:23:35.12 Here Ellen White caught the contest, 00:23:35.15\00:23:37.30 she knew that it was Judas 00:23:37.33\00:23:39.24 who would encouraged the people to place Jesus as king 00:23:39.27\00:23:42.78 that's why Jesus at the end calls, 00:23:42.81\00:23:44.64 he says one of you is the diabolos, 00:23:44.67\00:23:46.90 one of you is the devil or is a devil. 00:23:46.93\00:23:51.59 She says this "Judas was first 00:23:51.62\00:23:54.12 to take advantage of the enthusiasm 00:23:54.15\00:23:56.55 excited by the miracle of the loaves. 00:23:56.58\00:23:59.77 It was he who set on foot 00:23:59.80\00:24:03.70 the project to take Christ by force and make Him king. 00:24:03.73\00:24:09.49 His hopes were high. 00:24:09.52\00:24:12.06 And his disappointment was bitter." 00:24:12.09\00:24:17.16 You see Judas loved to be praised by the world. 00:24:17.19\00:24:19.69 Judas hated it when Jesus said 00:24:19.72\00:24:21.58 my kingdom is not of this world. 00:24:21.61\00:24:24.98 He hated it when Jesus said blessed are the peacemakers. 00:24:25.01\00:24:29.60 He hated it when Jesus spoke about loving your neighbor 00:24:29.63\00:24:33.40 and turning the other cheek, 00:24:33.43\00:24:35.75 because he says, you have to occupy a position of power. 00:24:35.78\00:24:39.58 This is not the kind of Messiah that I'm envisioning. 00:24:39.61\00:24:46.29 And in the Sanctified Life page 59 00:24:46.32\00:24:49.78 Ellen White describes his character. 00:24:49.81\00:24:51.40 She says "Judas possessed a form of godliness." 00:24:51.43\00:24:54.73 In fact you know Ellen White says 00:24:54.76\00:24:56.10 that if Judas had died on the way to Jerusalem 00:24:56.13\00:24:58.92 that last journey to Jerusalem 00:24:58.95\00:25:00.70 he would have gone down 00:25:00.73\00:25:01.76 as one of the greatest of the disciples. 00:25:01.79\00:25:04.94 Everybody would have thought that 00:25:04.97\00:25:06.14 he had been a tremendous asset to the twelve apostles 00:25:06.17\00:25:09.43 if he died on the way to Jerusalem 00:25:09.46\00:25:11.17 before his plot was unmasked. 00:25:11.20\00:25:13.54 You see, he was undercover. 00:25:13.57\00:25:15.85 Second Thessalonians 2 we're gonna notice 00:25:15.88\00:25:17.41 that the antichrist is also undercover, 00:25:17.44\00:25:19.77 but he's gonna be revealed at some point. 00:25:19.80\00:25:22.14 And he's gonna have the same characteristics as Judas. 00:25:22.17\00:25:27.08 She continues saying, 00:25:27.11\00:25:28.14 "Judas possessed the form of godliness, 00:25:28.17\00:25:30.15 while his character was more satanic than divine. 00:25:30.18\00:25:35.59 He professed to be a disciple of Christ, 00:25:35.62\00:25:38.54 but in words and in the works denied him." 00:25:38.57\00:25:44.52 And then we move forward to the moment 00:25:44.55\00:25:46.86 that the feet of Jesus were anointed by Mary. 00:25:46.89\00:25:52.94 It's found in John 12:1-8. 00:25:52.97\00:25:55.90 And we catch another glimpse of the problem the Judas had. 00:25:55.93\00:25:58.70 See, Judas had problems with his physical stature, 00:25:58.73\00:26:04.98 he had problems with the praise of the world 00:26:05.01\00:26:07.83 with a position of power, 00:26:07.86\00:26:10.01 he had problems with money with prestige and with riches. 00:26:10.04\00:26:16.98 Notice John 12:1-8. 00:26:17.01\00:26:19.93 "Then six days before the Passover, 00:26:19.96\00:26:21.81 Jesus came to Bethany, 00:26:21.84\00:26:23.11 where Lazarus was whom had been dead, 00:26:23.14\00:26:27.28 whom He had raised from the dead. 00:26:27.31\00:26:29.90 There they made Him a supper, and Martha served, 00:26:29.93\00:26:32.33 but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. 00:26:32.36\00:26:36.93 Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, 00:26:36.96\00:26:40.90 anointed the feet of Jesus, 00:26:40.93\00:26:42.50 and wipes His feet with her hair. 00:26:42.53\00:26:45.67 And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. 00:26:45.70\00:26:50.26 Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, 00:26:50.29\00:26:55.56 who would betray Him, said, 00:26:55.59\00:26:57.86 Why was this fragrant oil not sold 00:26:57.89\00:27:01.37 for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?'" 00:27:01.40\00:27:04.96 Now the gospel writer John provides some insight. 00:27:08.22\00:27:13.15 Notice verse 6. This he said. 00:27:13.18\00:27:17.29 "Not that he cared for the poor, 00:27:17.32\00:27:20.27 but because he was a thief, and had the money box, 00:27:20.30\00:27:24.88 and he used to take what was put in it." 00:27:24.91\00:27:28.72 In other words he used the money for his own personnel benefit. 00:27:28.75\00:27:36.14 He was an embezzler if you please. 00:27:36.17\00:27:39.97 "But Jesus said, 'Let her alone, 00:27:40.00\00:27:42.38 she has kept this for the day of My burial. 00:27:42.41\00:27:44.92 For the poor you have with you always, 00:27:44.95\00:27:47.51 but Me you did not have always." 00:27:47.54\00:27:50.15 Do you notice that Jesus never openly criticize Judas? 00:27:50.18\00:27:54.48 It would have been a disaster if Jesus had criticized Judas. 00:27:54.51\00:27:57.79 The disciples would not have been able to understand 00:27:57.82\00:28:00.41 exactly what was going on, 00:28:00.44\00:28:01.82 because to all appearances Judas appeared to be okay. 00:28:01.85\00:28:07.20 His principles needed to develop so that the disciples 00:28:07.23\00:28:10.82 could finally see the fruition of his life. 00:28:10.85\00:28:14.55 Is that also a true of Lucifer in heaven? 00:28:14.58\00:28:17.53 Absolutely. 00:28:17.56\00:28:21.00 Now we come to the moment of the events 00:28:21.03\00:28:23.11 that take place in the Upper Room. 00:28:23.14\00:28:27.27 In Luke 22:3, 00:28:27.30\00:28:30.27 we are told "Then Satan." Listen to this. 00:28:30.30\00:28:33.92 "Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, 00:28:33.95\00:28:40.29 who was numbered among the twelve." 00:28:40.32\00:28:43.81 Satan entered Judas. 00:28:43.84\00:28:47.25 Could we say that Judas was Satan's vice regent? 00:28:47.28\00:28:53.19 Could we say that Judas was Satan's right-hand man 00:28:53.22\00:28:58.10 to carry on the betrayal of Jesus? 00:28:58.13\00:29:00.50 Is it just possible at the end of time 00:29:00.53\00:29:02.81 the devil is gonna have an antichrist 00:29:02.84\00:29:06.17 who will serve as His right-hand man 00:29:06.20\00:29:09.30 not to betray Jesus, 00:29:09.33\00:29:11.35 but to betray the body of Jesus which is His church. 00:29:11.38\00:29:17.33 And it will be not some outside blasphemous atheist, 00:29:17.36\00:29:23.91 but it would be someone 00:29:23.94\00:29:25.28 from the inner circle of Christianity. 00:29:25.31\00:29:29.07 In fact, Ellen White says in Desire of Ages page 295. 00:29:29.10\00:29:32.77 "Judas became a representative of the enemy of Christ." 00:29:32.80\00:29:39.15 We continue noticing the problems 00:29:41.21\00:29:43.02 that Judas had with money. 00:29:43.05\00:29:45.60 In Matthew 26:14-16 we find the moment 00:29:45.63\00:29:51.14 when Judas signs the bill of sale. 00:29:51.17\00:29:53.38 And by the way it's interesting to notice 00:29:53.41\00:29:55.62 that Judas unites with the religious leaders. 00:29:55.65\00:29:59.21 You have a two-fold religious coalition 00:29:59.24\00:30:02.46 that is going to deliver Jesus 00:30:02.49\00:30:04.20 into the hands of the civil power. 00:30:04.23\00:30:07.21 That's important, because in Revelation 00:30:07.24\00:30:09.97 we're gonna notice that we have also 00:30:10.00\00:30:12.04 two religious powers, the beast and the false prophet 00:30:12.07\00:30:15.80 who join together to deliver God's remnant into the hands 00:30:15.83\00:30:19.64 of the civil powers of the world. 00:30:19.67\00:30:22.49 And so Judas becomes allied with the religious leaders 00:30:22.52\00:30:29.59 to deliver Jesus into their hands. 00:30:29.62\00:30:32.01 And by the way we'll just read the passage 00:30:32.04\00:30:34.46 and then we'll come back to a very important point. 00:30:34.49\00:30:36.66 It says than one of the twelve called Judas Iscariot 00:30:36.69\00:30:39.73 went to the chief priests and said 00:30:39.76\00:30:42.80 what are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you? 00:30:42.83\00:30:45.97 And they counted out to him 30 pieces of silver, 00:30:46.00\00:30:50.50 so from that time he saw opportunity to betray Him. 00:30:50.53\00:30:53.81 Listen folks, that was in the mind of Judas 00:30:53.84\00:30:57.32 only the down payment for betraying Jesus. 00:30:57.35\00:31:01.04 Do you know what plan Judas really had? 00:31:01.07\00:31:04.04 He says, I will betray Him now 00:31:04.07\00:31:07.55 and I'll get the down payment 30 pieces of silver 00:31:07.58\00:31:10.54 and then what He will do is deliver Himself. 00:31:10.57\00:31:15.51 And when He delivers Himself He'll take the throne 00:31:15.54\00:31:19.05 and when He takes the throne He'll make me His vice regent 00:31:19.08\00:31:22.61 and then there will be a lot more 00:31:22.64\00:31:24.34 where this came from. 00:31:24.37\00:31:27.72 And you say how do we know that? 00:31:27.75\00:31:28.91 Well, it's very simple, 00:31:28.94\00:31:30.65 when he saw that his plan backfired, 00:31:30.68\00:31:32.32 when he saw that Jesus was gonna go to the cross 00:31:32.35\00:31:34.30 and He was gonna die what did he do? 00:31:34.33\00:31:36.60 He committed suicide. 00:31:36.63\00:31:38.88 It wasn't his plan for Jesus to be killed. 00:31:38.91\00:31:41.10 It was his plan for Jesus to deliver Himself, 00:31:41.13\00:31:43.41 become king and make Judas His vice regent. 00:31:43.44\00:31:46.16 Notice once again power and money are involved. 00:31:46.19\00:31:51.23 And then we go to the Last Supper, 00:31:51.26\00:31:54.17 we're moving chronologically through the life of Judas. 00:31:54.20\00:31:59.32 Matthew 26:20-25 Jesus is sitting at the table 00:31:59.35\00:32:03.36 in the Upper Room with the disciples. 00:32:03.39\00:32:05.99 It says there "When evening had come, 00:32:06.02\00:32:08.58 He sat down with the twelve. 00:32:08.61\00:32:11.51 Now as they were eating, He said, 00:32:11.54\00:32:14.32 Assuredly I say to you, one of you will betray Me. 00:32:14.35\00:32:19.47 And they were exceedingly sorrowful, 00:32:19.50\00:32:22.37 and each of them began to say to Him, 00:32:22.40\00:32:24.35 Lord, is it I? He answered and said, 00:32:24.38\00:32:29.29 'He who dipped his hand with Me 00:32:29.32\00:32:31.30 in the dish will betray Me. 00:32:31.33\00:32:34.58 The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, 00:32:34.61\00:32:39.05 but woe to that man 00:32:39.08\00:32:41.03 by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! 00:32:41.06\00:32:43.16 It would have been good for that man 00:32:43.19\00:32:45.54 if he had not been born.'" 00:32:45.57\00:32:47.41 And now noticed the hypocrisy of Judas. 00:32:50.43\00:32:52.59 He still trying to hide his identity to the disciples. 00:32:52.62\00:32:59.41 Verse 25 "Then Judas, who was betraying Him, 00:32:59.44\00:33:02.90 answered and said, "Rabbi, is it I?" 00:33:02.93\00:33:09.96 He said to him, "You have said so.'" 00:33:09.99\00:33:15.15 In John 13:2 00:33:15.18\00:33:19.12 we find that it was the devil 00:33:19.15\00:33:20.38 who put this plan into the heart of Judas. 00:33:20.41\00:33:22.34 It says "And supper being ended, the devil having 00:33:22.37\00:33:25.59 already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, 00:33:25.62\00:33:28.49 Simon's son, to betray Him." 00:33:28.52\00:33:33.18 And then after they had supper 00:33:33.21\00:33:36.41 Jesus girded Himself 00:33:36.44\00:33:40.58 takes a towel and water 00:33:40.61\00:33:45.09 and now Jesus is going to wash the feet of the disciples. 00:33:45.12\00:33:51.68 Notice what we find in John 13:2-6, 00:33:51.71\00:33:55.90 John 13:2-6. 00:33:55.93\00:33:59.62 "And supper being ended, the devil having already put it 00:33:59.65\00:34:03.72 into the heart of Judas Iscariot, 00:34:03.75\00:34:05.32 Simon's son, to betray Him, 00:34:05.35\00:34:07.86 Jesus, knowing that the Father 00:34:07.89\00:34:09.22 had given all things into His hands, 00:34:09.25\00:34:11.55 and that He had come from God and was going to God, 00:34:11.58\00:34:15.15 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, 00:34:15.18\00:34:19.94 took a towel and girded Himself. 00:34:19.97\00:34:24.32 After that, He poured water into a basin 00:34:24.35\00:34:26.62 and began to wash the disciples' feet, 00:34:26.65\00:34:29.18 and to wipe them with the towel 00:34:29.21\00:34:31.25 with which He was girded." 00:34:31.28\00:34:35.02 Whose feet did Jesus wash first? 00:34:35.05\00:34:40.00 He washed the feet of Judas first 00:34:40.03\00:34:43.71 according to Desire of Ages. 00:34:43.74\00:34:47.25 Probably to read your statement 00:34:47.28\00:34:48.31 from Bible Commentary volume 5, pages 1138 00:34:48.34\00:34:52.29 very interesting remark. 00:34:52.32\00:34:55.40 Ellen White says "Christ gave His disciples to understand 00:34:55.43\00:34:59.03 that the washing of their feet did not cleanse away their sin, 00:34:59.06\00:35:03.79 but that the cleansing of their heart was tested 00:35:03.82\00:35:06.56 in this humble service." 00:35:06.59\00:35:08.84 Notice by washing the feet their hearts went cleansed, 00:35:08.87\00:35:11.95 but by them being willing to wash one another's feet 00:35:11.98\00:35:15.12 they were showing that their heart had been cleansed. 00:35:15.15\00:35:19.02 She continues saying, 00:35:19.05\00:35:21.07 "If the heart was cleansed this act was all 00:35:21.10\00:35:24.93 that was essential to reveal the fact. 00:35:24.96\00:35:28.44 He had washed the feet of Judas, 00:35:28.47\00:35:31.48 but he said, 'Ye are not all clean.'" 00:35:31.51\00:35:33.53 That shows that the water didn't cleanse the individual 00:35:33.56\00:35:36.31 because he washed the feet of Judas and Judas wasn't clean. 00:35:36.34\00:35:39.14 "He had washed the feet of Judas 00:35:42.22\00:35:43.57 but he said, "Ye are not al clean." 00:35:43.60\00:35:46.30 Judas brought a traitors heart to this scene, 00:35:46.33\00:35:49.46 and Christ reveal to all 00:35:49.49\00:35:52.17 that He knew him to be the betrayer of his Lord, 00:35:52.20\00:35:55.49 and that the washing of his feet 00:35:55.52\00:35:57.09 was not on ordinance to cleanse the soul 00:35:57.12\00:36:00.26 from its moral defilement." 00:36:00.29\00:36:01.64 In other words the washing of the feet 00:36:01.67\00:36:03.41 was a signal that the heart was clean. 00:36:03.44\00:36:07.05 The washing of the feet was not to clean the heart 00:36:07.08\00:36:09.68 but to show that the heart was clean. 00:36:09.71\00:36:12.97 And Judas according to this 00:36:13.00\00:36:14.62 had come with the traitor's heart. 00:36:14.65\00:36:18.44 You see, Jesus was trying to reach the heart of Judas 00:36:18.47\00:36:22.59 with His act of love, 00:36:22.62\00:36:24.40 this with, with His act of humility. 00:36:24.43\00:36:26.78 What it did was hearting the heart of Judas. 00:36:26.81\00:36:32.06 And it's not Jesus' fault that his heart was hardened 00:36:32.09\00:36:35.43 it was because of Judas's choices. 00:36:35.46\00:36:39.48 Notice what we find in Review and Herald June 14, 1898. 00:36:39.51\00:36:44.54 "If this service of his Master, 00:36:44.57\00:36:47.75 in humbling Himself to wash the feet of the worst sinner, 00:36:47.78\00:36:52.00 did not break his heart, what more could be done? 00:36:52.03\00:36:57.52 It was the last act of love 00:36:57.55\00:36:59.97 that Jesus could evidence in behalf of Judas. 00:37:00.00\00:37:04.22 Infinite love could not compel Judas to repent 00:37:04.25\00:37:08.04 confesses his sin and be saved. 00:37:08.07\00:37:11.64 Every opportunity was granted him. 00:37:11.67\00:37:14.68 Nothing was left undone that could be done 00:37:14.71\00:37:18.24 to save him from the snare of Satan." 00:37:18.27\00:37:22.91 And then there's this very significant passage 00:37:22.94\00:37:26.48 that we find in Desire of Ages page 645 00:37:26.51\00:37:30.32 where we discover but at first Judas was impressed positively 00:37:30.35\00:37:35.73 with what Jesus did but then he was disgusted. 00:37:35.76\00:37:40.03 You see, because this act 00:37:40.06\00:37:41.24 what king would wash the feet of his subjects. 00:37:41.27\00:37:45.47 What king in his right mind 00:37:45.50\00:37:47.18 who should be sitting on the throne 00:37:47.21\00:37:48.90 and having a subject serve Him 00:37:48.93\00:37:51.29 would actually bow and stoop 00:37:51.32\00:37:55.00 to wash the feet of his subjects. 00:37:55.03\00:37:56.91 That was disgusting. 00:37:56.94\00:37:59.54 Notice this statement, 00:37:59.57\00:38:01.91 "When the Savior's hands were bathing those soiled feet, 00:38:01.94\00:38:08.71 and wiping them with the towel, 00:38:08.74\00:38:11.56 the heart of Judas thrilled 00:38:11.59\00:38:15.06 through and through with the impulse 00:38:15.09\00:38:18.89 then and there to confess his sin." 00:38:18.92\00:38:22.58 Wow, did that happened to Lucifer heaven 00:38:22.61\00:38:26.44 where God call all the Angels before Him 00:38:26.47\00:38:30.03 and for a moment there Lucifer said, 00:38:30.06\00:38:32.81 I should confess my sin. 00:38:32.84\00:38:34.91 See this is repeating the story of Lucifer 00:38:34.94\00:38:37.66 because Judas is possessed by Lucifer. 00:38:37.69\00:38:41.40 That's why all these stories are similar. 00:38:41.43\00:38:43.07 Absalom you say. 00:38:43.10\00:38:44.15 Well, why is the story of Absalom similar to the story 00:38:44.18\00:38:47.19 of the rebellion of Lucifer in heaven 00:38:47.22\00:38:49.49 because Absalom is serving as and instrument of Satan. 00:38:49.52\00:38:55.22 And this how was the story being written in us? 00:38:55.25\00:38:58.91 Is Jesus tapping His character in us 00:38:58.94\00:39:02.57 or is Lucifer stamping his character in us? 00:39:02.60\00:39:05.58 Very important question. 00:39:05.61\00:39:08.21 She continues saying, 00:39:08.24\00:39:09.66 "But he would not humble himself." 00:39:09.69\00:39:14.94 So hard to humble yourself isn't it. 00:39:14.97\00:39:18.15 "He hardened his heart against repentance 00:39:18.18\00:39:21.37 and the old impulses, for the moment put aside," 00:39:21.40\00:39:24.55 almost identical to the terms about Lucifer 00:39:24.58\00:39:26.55 when he was in heaven. 00:39:26.58\00:39:27.96 For a moment he felt like confessing 00:39:27.99\00:39:30.55 and then all of those selfish feelings 00:39:30.58\00:39:33.28 rushed back into his heart 00:39:33.31\00:39:36.93 "and the old impulses for the moment put aside, 00:39:36.96\00:39:38.99 again controlled him. 00:39:39.02\00:39:40.13 Judas was now offended." 00:39:40.16\00:39:42.42 See he was not melted so now he's offended. 00:39:42.45\00:39:46.64 "Was now offended at Christ act 00:39:46.67\00:39:48.47 in the washing the feet of the disciples, 00:39:48.50\00:39:51.17 of his disciples. 00:39:51.20\00:39:52.50 If Jesus could so humble Himself, 00:39:52.53\00:39:55.24 he thought, He could not be Israel's King. 00:39:55.27\00:39:59.15 All hope of worldly honor 00:39:59.18\00:40:02.87 in a temporal kingdom was destroyed." 00:40:02.90\00:40:09.47 What did he want? 00:40:09.50\00:40:10.96 Worldly honor, temple kingdom, 00:40:10.99\00:40:14.91 position of power, money, influence. 00:40:14.94\00:40:21.06 She continues saying "Judas was satisfied 00:40:21.09\00:40:23.71 that there was nothing to be gained by following Christ." 00:40:23.74\00:40:28.82 Sounds like many Christians today 00:40:28.85\00:40:30.21 we're into the prosperity gospel. 00:40:30.24\00:40:33.52 Serve Jesus and you get rich. 00:40:33.55\00:40:37.37 Oh, there's nothing wrong with having lots of money 00:40:37.40\00:40:41.14 and multiple houses and lots of money in the bank 00:40:41.17\00:40:44.05 and lots of toys to play with and lots of automobile. 00:40:44.08\00:40:47.05 There's nothing wrong with that 00:40:47.08\00:40:48.23 God wants you to be rich and prosperous. 00:40:48.26\00:40:50.85 And meanwhile the work of God languishes 00:40:50.88\00:40:53.55 the church budget likes behind. 00:40:53.58\00:40:56.45 I had to get that in. 00:40:56.48\00:40:57.68 After, notice this, "After seeing him degrade himself," 00:41:02.06\00:41:06.30 after Judas saw Jesus degrade himself 00:41:06.33\00:41:08.42 and he's in his mind "as he thought, 00:41:08.45\00:41:12.37 he was confirmed in his purpose to disown Him, 00:41:12.40\00:41:16.94 and confessed himself deceived. 00:41:16.97\00:41:20.35 He was possessed" notice this, 00:41:20.38\00:41:22.07 "He was possessed by a demon." 00:41:22.10\00:41:26.79 Ellen White calls it the demand of selfishness. 00:41:26.82\00:41:30.33 "And he resolved to complete the work 00:41:30.36\00:41:33.14 he had agreed to do in betraying his Lord." 00:41:33.17\00:41:39.74 And then you have a closing events in the Upper Room. 00:41:39.77\00:41:43.48 Notice John 13:26-30. 00:41:43.51\00:41:48.22 Jesus answered, "it is he" 00:41:48.25\00:41:51.89 because all of them are asking is it I? 00:41:51.92\00:41:54.78 "It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread 00:41:54.81\00:41:58.71 when I have dipped it and having dipped the bread 00:41:58.74\00:42:02.46 he gave it to Judas Iscariot," 00:42:02.49\00:42:07.23 I wish I had time to talk about the name Iscariot. 00:42:07.26\00:42:10.06 Very interesting. "The son of Simon. 00:42:10.09\00:42:14.38 Now after the piece of bread" 00:42:14.41\00:42:16.38 notice this, "Satan entered him." 00:42:16.41\00:42:20.33 When he says is it I? Satan enters him. 00:42:20.36\00:42:24.52 In other words, he becomes a vice regent of saint, 00:42:24.55\00:42:26.43 he becomes the instrument of Satan, 00:42:26.46\00:42:27.96 he becomes possessed by Satan. 00:42:27.99\00:42:31.10 "Then Jesus said to him, 'What you do, do quickly.'" 00:42:31.13\00:42:36.94 Now notice this, "But no one at the table 00:42:36.97\00:42:39.36 knew for what reason He said this to him." 00:42:39.39\00:42:41.63 The disciples were deceived even to the moment 00:42:41.66\00:42:43.77 that Judas got up and left the table. 00:42:43.80\00:42:47.69 How many Christians are gonna be deceived 00:42:47.72\00:42:49.37 till the very end by the end time antichrist? 00:42:49.40\00:42:52.79 Most. 00:42:52.82\00:42:55.12 They actually thought that Jesus was sending Judas on an errand. 00:42:55.15\00:43:01.36 It continues saying, verse 29, 00:43:01.39\00:43:04.41 "For some thought, because Judas had the money box, 00:43:04.44\00:43:07.90 that Jesus had said to him, 00:43:07.93\00:43:09.48 'Buy those things we need for the feast,' 00:43:09.51\00:43:12.55 or that he should give something to the poor. 00:43:12.58\00:43:16.07 Having received the piece of bread, 00:43:16.10\00:43:18.06 he then went out immediately. 00:43:18.09\00:43:20.10 And it was night." 00:43:20.13\00:43:22.34 Allow me to read a statement from the Sprit of Prophecy 00:43:22.37\00:43:24.92 on that comment it was night. 00:43:24.95\00:43:27.13 Desire of Ages 654 and 655, 00:43:27.16\00:43:30.16 the Lord's servant says this, "Night it was to the traitor 00:43:30.19\00:43:36.55 as he turned away from Christ into the outer darkness. 00:43:36.58\00:43:40.31 Until this step was taken 00:43:40.34\00:43:42.58 that is when he left the Upper Room, 00:43:42.61\00:43:44.78 Judas have not passed beyond the possibility of repentance. 00:43:44.81\00:43:49.23 But when he left the presence of his Lord 00:43:49.26\00:43:51.59 and his fellow disciples, 00:43:51.62\00:43:53.73 the final decision had been made. 00:43:53.76\00:43:56.77 He had passed the boundary line." 00:43:56.80\00:43:59.83 In other words she had committed the unpardonable sin. 00:43:59.86\00:44:04.35 Pride, over his physical stature his keen intelligence 00:44:04.38\00:44:10.07 and ability pride over the desire for position and power 00:44:10.10\00:44:15.11 enriches over around him 00:44:15.14\00:44:18.32 and he became the dominating force in his life. 00:44:18.35\00:44:22.84 Interestingly enough in John 17: 12, 00:44:22.87\00:44:27.24 Judas is given a unique name. 00:44:27.27\00:44:31.56 and we'll come back to this, this is on our next subject 00:44:37.05\00:44:39.56 we're gonna talk about another son of perdition, 00:44:39.59\00:44:43.57 the end time son of perdition. 00:44:43.60\00:44:46.70 Here Jesus says, "While I was with them in the world," 00:44:46.73\00:44:50.15 He is praying to His Father "I kept them in Your name. 00:44:50.18\00:44:55.45 Those whom You gave Me I have kept 00:44:55.48\00:44:58.91 and none of them is lost" except whom? 00:44:58.94\00:45:03.76 "Except the son of perdition, 00:45:03.79\00:45:06.69 that the Scripture" might be what? 00:45:06.72\00:45:09.67 "That the Scripture might be fulfilled." 00:45:09.70\00:45:12.99 What is the name that is given to Judas? 00:45:13.02\00:45:15.44 The son of perdition. 00:45:15.47\00:45:20.01 By the way did Jesus, did Judas know 00:45:20.04\00:45:22.15 where to find Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane? 00:45:22.18\00:45:26.71 Yes. 00:45:26.74\00:45:27.82 In fact, Judas was the one who led the guard 00:45:27.85\00:45:32.47 of the high priest to Jesus in the garden. 00:45:32.50\00:45:35.65 So is this on insider who is betraying his Lord? 00:45:35.68\00:45:40.19 Yes, it's no atheistic blasphemous outsider 00:45:40.22\00:45:44.60 who is betraying Jesus, 00:45:44.63\00:45:46.08 it is one who belongs to the inner circle. 00:45:46.11\00:45:49.71 Jesus is being betrayed from within. 00:45:49.74\00:45:54.54 How did Judas betray Jesus? 00:45:54.57\00:45:57.42 Even to the way in which he betrayed Jesus 00:45:57.45\00:46:00.51 he's professing loyalty to Christ. 00:46:00.54\00:46:05.14 Notice Matthew 26:47, 00:46:05.17\00:46:09.14 "And while he was still speaking," 00:46:09.17\00:46:10.87 that is Jesus "behold, Judas, one of the twelve, 00:46:10.90\00:46:13.25 with a great multitude with sergeant clubs, 00:46:13.28\00:46:15.43 came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 00:46:15.46\00:46:19.05 Now His betrayer had given them a sign saying, 00:46:19.08\00:46:21.91 Whomever I kiss, He is the one, seize Him. 00:46:21.94\00:46:25.88 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, 00:46:25.91\00:46:28.85 "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed Him." 00:46:28.88\00:46:34.53 Is it just possible that the end time 00:46:34.56\00:46:36.49 antichrist will deliver the body of Christ 00:46:36.52\00:46:41.37 so to speak with a kiss? 00:46:41.40\00:46:45.79 No doubt whatsoever about it folks, 00:46:45.82\00:46:48.36 this story is going to be repeated 00:46:48.39\00:46:51.78 and the awesome sad thing is that everyone 00:46:51.81\00:46:55.42 who has the same spirit of Judas will end up in that camp, 00:46:55.45\00:47:01.23 in the camp of the antichrist. 00:47:01.26\00:47:04.60 Unless these sins are expelled from the life 00:47:04.63\00:47:07.22 through the power of Jesus, through the power of spirit 00:47:07.25\00:47:10.11 we will end up in that system 00:47:10.14\00:47:12.41 which is called the son of perdition 00:47:12.44\00:47:14.69 the end time antichrist system 00:47:14.72\00:47:18.02 and we will end up not betraying possibly Jesus 00:47:18.05\00:47:21.70 because those who will live in the end time 00:47:21.73\00:47:24.74 will be a Christian system 00:47:24.77\00:47:27.22 but they will betray the body of Jesus the church. 00:47:27.25\00:47:34.32 And then of course we have the repentance of Judas, 00:47:34.35\00:47:37.57 crocodile tears. 00:47:37.60\00:47:40.16 He was sad at the consequences of what he had done, 00:47:40.19\00:47:44.15 his plan had back fired. 00:47:44.18\00:47:45.46 He wasn't sorry that he delivered the Son of Man. 00:47:45.49\00:47:48.99 He was sorry that his plan hadn't worked. 00:47:49.02\00:47:51.76 He was sorry of the results of sin not the sin itself. 00:47:51.79\00:47:56.06 And notice Matthew 27:3-6, 00:47:56.09\00:47:58.93 how this tragic story ends. 00:47:58.96\00:48:00.60 By the way do you remember how the life of Saul ended? 00:48:00.63\00:48:04.37 There's a striking similar to between 00:48:04.40\00:48:06.48 the life a Judas and the life of Saul. 00:48:06.51\00:48:09.66 Because Saul was also possessed by a demon 00:48:09.69\00:48:12.74 at the end of his life, 00:48:12.77\00:48:14.77 because Saul had the same qualities 00:48:14.80\00:48:17.77 that Lucifer had in heaven the same qualities of Absalom, 00:48:17.80\00:48:21.76 the same qualities of Judas the same qualities 00:48:21.79\00:48:24.97 as the end time son of perdition. 00:48:25.00\00:48:28.83 If we know how the devil worked in these preliminary cases 00:48:28.86\00:48:31.54 we will know how to flee from the antichrist 00:48:31.57\00:48:35.10 who is here now who will soon be manifested as the antichrist. 00:48:35.13\00:48:38.88 Notice Matthew 27:3, "Then Judas, His betrayer, 00:48:38.91\00:48:43.45 seeing that He had been condemned, 00:48:43.48\00:48:45.89 was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver 00:48:45.92\00:48:50.35 to the chief priests and elders, saying, 00:48:50.38\00:48:52.16 'I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.' 00:48:52.19\00:48:56.21 And they said "What is that to us. 00:48:56.24\00:48:58.67 You will see to it!" 00:48:58.70\00:49:00.89 Then he threw down 00:49:00.92\00:49:02.47 the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, 00:49:02.50\00:49:05.74 and went and he what? 00:49:05.77\00:49:09.37 "And he hanged himself." 00:49:09.40\00:49:12.34 Did Saul commit suicide? He most certainly did. 00:49:12.37\00:49:18.83 Notice the comment on this in Desire of Ages 721 and 722. 00:49:18.86\00:49:24.16 "As the trial drew to a close" 00:49:24.19\00:49:26.97 trial of Jesus, "Judas could endure 00:49:27.00\00:49:30.47 the torture of his guilty conscience no longer. 00:49:30.50\00:49:34.82 Suddenly a hoarse voice rang through the hall 00:49:34.85\00:49:38.47 sending a thrill of terror to all hearts, 00:49:38.50\00:49:42.98 He is innocent; spare Him O Caiaphas! 00:49:43.01\00:49:48.02 The tall form of Judas was now seen 00:49:48.05\00:49:51.47 pressing through the startled throng. 00:49:51.50\00:49:54.70 His face was pale and haggard 00:49:54.73\00:49:57.84 and great drops of sweat stood on his forehead." 00:49:57.87\00:50:01.78 Ellen White saw this in vision. 00:50:01.81\00:50:05.99 "Rushing to the throne of judgment, 00:50:06.02\00:50:08.19 he threw down before the high priest 00:50:08.22\00:50:10.78 the pieces of silver 00:50:10.81\00:50:12.15 that had been the price of the Lord's betrayal." 00:50:12.18\00:50:14.16 By the way at the end of time 00:50:14.19\00:50:15.31 our people gonna take their silver and their gold 00:50:15.34\00:50:16.99 and throw them on the streets 00:50:17.02\00:50:18.09 when they realize that they are lost. 00:50:18.12\00:50:20.79 Ezekiel 7:19 says, 00:50:20.82\00:50:22.55 "Their silver and their gold will not be able to save them 00:50:22.58\00:50:25.88 in the day of the Lord's wrath. 00:50:25.91\00:50:27.36 They will throw their silver and gold into the streets." 00:50:27.39\00:50:31.22 Revelation 18 describes it as "Babylon crying out 00:50:31.25\00:50:34.51 because all of the merchants of the earth 00:50:34.54\00:50:36.17 can no longer make themselves rich through this system." 00:50:36.20\00:50:43.43 "Eagerly grasping the robe of Caiaphas, 00:50:43.46\00:50:45.92 he implored him to release Jesus, 00:50:45.95\00:50:48.93 declaring that He had done nothing worthy of death." 00:50:48.96\00:50:54.72 And then interestingly enough 00:50:54.75\00:50:57.26 and I'm not gonna read the passage 00:50:57.29\00:50:58.56 it's a rather long passage 00:50:58.59\00:51:00.20 you can read it in Acts 1:16-26. 00:51:00.23\00:51:05.85 An election takes place in the Upper Room 00:51:05.88\00:51:07.45 before the day of Pentecost. 00:51:07.48\00:51:10.42 The successor of Judas. 00:51:10.45\00:51:13.51 Have you ever read in Scripture where it says 00:51:13.54\00:51:15.71 there were suppose to be a carefulness 00:51:15.74\00:51:17.27 anyone takes our crown. 00:51:17.30\00:51:20.81 Have you read that that verse? 00:51:20.84\00:51:23.52 Here we have the case 00:51:23.55\00:51:25.90 someone else is taking Judas's crown, its Matthias. 00:51:25.93\00:51:31.85 In fact what Judas did was a fulfillment of Psalm 109 00:51:31.88\00:51:37.49 where it says in that Psalm 00:51:37.52\00:51:39.11 that another would take his office 00:51:39.14\00:51:43.10 and that's exactly what happened, 00:51:43.13\00:51:45.05 another took his office. 00:51:45.08\00:51:47.92 Do you know who was sitting on the left side of Jesus 00:51:51.47\00:51:55.88 at the last supper? Judas. 00:51:55.91\00:52:00.82 Do you know who was sitting on the right side of Jesus? 00:52:00.85\00:52:04.25 John. Interesting. 00:52:04.28\00:52:08.19 John was reclining upon Jesus 00:52:08.22\00:52:10.17 and Judas was on the left hand side 00:52:10.20\00:52:12.10 trying to press close. 00:52:12.13\00:52:13.44 Desire of Ages tells us 00:52:13.47\00:52:14.75 that if there was gonna be a first place in the kingdom 00:52:14.78\00:52:17.08 Judas wanted to be real near Jesus, 00:52:17.11\00:52:20.13 'cause he wanted that position. 00:52:20.16\00:52:22.31 Do you know that these two disciples 00:52:22.34\00:52:24.61 describe two kinds of people that exist in the world 00:52:24.64\00:52:27.67 today and will exist till the very end of time? 00:52:27.70\00:52:30.18 Did John have serious defects of character? 00:52:30.21\00:52:34.13 He was called a son of thunder. 00:52:34.16\00:52:39.43 He has serious defects in his character, 00:52:39.46\00:52:42.47 some of them probably even worst than the defects that Judas had. 00:52:42.50\00:52:47.09 But John allowed the influence of the Holy Spirit 00:52:47.12\00:52:49.38 to impact his life and transform his character. 00:52:49.41\00:52:53.14 Where as Judas harden his heart 00:52:53.17\00:52:55.02 and he did not allow Jesus to influence 00:52:55.05\00:52:57.59 and mold and change his selfish heart. 00:52:57.62\00:53:02.29 The Sanctified Life page 60 00:53:02.32\00:53:04.19 we find these words speaking about John and Judas. 00:53:04.22\00:53:10.29 "Those two disciples 00:53:10.32\00:53:13.65 represent the Christian world." 00:53:13.68\00:53:18.75 Did you catch that? 00:53:18.78\00:53:20.46 Say, oh, no Judas is all of the unbelievers. 00:53:20.49\00:53:24.51 And John represents the believers. 00:53:24.54\00:53:26.28 It's like Cain and Abel 00:53:29.60\00:53:31.12 two different kinds of worshipers, 00:53:31.15\00:53:35.66 two different kinds of religious people, 00:53:35.69\00:53:39.13 two different kinds of individuals 00:53:39.16\00:53:40.57 who claim to serve God. 00:53:40.60\00:53:42.99 We could go into the story of Cain and Abel 00:53:43.02\00:53:44.84 to illustrate the same story that we find here. 00:53:44.87\00:53:47.81 "These two disciples represent the Christian world. 00:53:51.83\00:53:56.17 All profess to be Christ's followers, 00:53:56.20\00:54:00.39 but while one class walk in humility and meekness, 00:54:00.42\00:54:06.03 learning of Jesus, the other show 00:54:06.06\00:54:10.08 that they are not doers of the word, but hearers only. 00:54:10.11\00:54:15.70 One class are sanctified through the truth, 00:54:15.73\00:54:20.31 the other know nothing 00:54:20.34\00:54:21.88 of the transforming power of divine grace. 00:54:21.91\00:54:25.81 The former are daily dying to self, 00:54:25.84\00:54:30.76 and are overcoming sin. 00:54:30.79\00:54:33.99 The latter are indulging their own lusts, 00:54:34.02\00:54:37.84 and becoming the servants of Satan." 00:54:37.87\00:54:41.37 One last quotation before making some concluding remarks. 00:54:44.55\00:54:48.96 Desire of Ages, 716 Ellen White speaks 00:54:48.99\00:54:53.70 about the reason for the demise of Judas. 00:54:53.73\00:54:56.44 She says, "Judas had naturally a strong love for money, 00:54:56.47\00:55:03.35 but he had not always been corrupt enough 00:55:03.38\00:55:06.54 to do such a deed as this." 00:55:06.57\00:55:09.12 That is of selling Jesus. 00:55:09.15\00:55:11.80 "He had fostered the evil spirit of avarice" 00:55:11.83\00:55:18.02 That's an extreme type of covetousness 00:55:18.05\00:55:21.09 is the way I like to describe it. 00:55:21.12\00:55:25.64 "Until" notice this, 00:55:25.67\00:55:27.61 "He had fostered the evil spirit of avarice 00:55:27.64\00:55:30.15 until it had become the ruling motive of his life. 00:55:30.18\00:55:35.61 The love of mammon 00:55:35.64\00:55:38.55 overbalanced his love for Christ. 00:55:38.58\00:55:42.72 Through becoming the slave" 00:55:42.75\00:55:45.57 listen to this "Through becoming the slave of one vice 00:55:45.60\00:55:51.11 he gave himself to Satan, 00:55:51.14\00:55:54.53 to be driven to any lengths in sin." 00:55:54.56\00:55:58.99 How do we handle beauty? Physical attraction? 00:56:02.55\00:56:07.60 The way we deal with the issue of jewelry, 00:56:07.63\00:56:09.83 people get all bent out of shape, 00:56:09.86\00:56:12.80 because jewelry is spoken up. 00:56:12.83\00:56:14.60 Well, why do you use it? To bring glory to Jesus, right. 00:56:14.63\00:56:19.02 Could that be a pitfall? 00:56:23.86\00:56:26.51 A physical appearance, it's a moral issue. 00:56:26.54\00:56:30.40 Other thirsts for position and power 00:56:30.43\00:56:33.01 especially when nominating committee comes. 00:56:33.04\00:56:35.04 Others are in love with money 00:56:38.47\00:56:41.70 while the work of God languishes in need. 00:56:41.73\00:56:46.45 Others are proud of their intellectual pursuits 00:56:46.48\00:56:50.51 and their intelligence and their degrees, 00:56:50.54\00:56:54.50 that how many PhDs after their name. 00:56:54.53\00:56:59.67 There is no one greater in the kingdom of God 00:56:59.70\00:57:04.42 than those who take these assets 00:57:04.45\00:57:08.67 and place them on the altar of sacrifice. 00:57:08.70\00:57:12.77 Were they dedicated to God service 00:57:12.80\00:57:16.27 instead of being dedicated to self service? 00:57:16.30\00:57:20.65 May God give us that spirit is my prayer. 00:57:20.68\00:57:24.94
