Hello and welcome to From Sickness To Health. 00:00:02.30\00:00:04.67 I'm your host, Rico Hill, and I'm joined by the blue guy 00:00:04.87\00:00:08.10 himself: Sickness. 00:00:08.30\00:00:10.04 Can you imagine having all the power of the universe: 00:00:10.24\00:00:13.54 the wisdom and divine ability to speak chariots into existence 00:00:13.74\00:00:17.78 but yet choosing to walk everywhere? 00:00:18.08\00:00:20.25 In Luke 13:33 Jesus states that He would walk 00:00:20.65\00:00:24.42 today, tomorrow, and the day following. 00:00:24.62\00:00:27.52 It's truly amazing that Jesus walked everywhere He went. 00:00:27.72\00:00:32.46 That's because they didn't have cars. 00:00:32.66\00:00:35.00 I think you're missing the point. 00:00:35.40\00:00:36.73 Well what is the point? 00:00:36.80\00:00:38.43 The point is that Jesus was teaching a valuable lesson! 00:00:38.63\00:00:42.07 And that is the topic of our program today. 00:00:42.47\00:00:45.37 Oh... don't tell me. Today we're going to talk about 00:00:45.57\00:00:48.98 healthy people... jumping around, breathing heavy, 00:00:49.18\00:00:52.75 sweating all over the place, 00:00:53.15\00:00:55.48 acting like they enjoy it 00:00:55.68\00:00:57.29 but they're really a bunch of phonies. 00:00:57.69\00:00:59.59 Yes, I'm excited about that! 00:00:59.79\00:01:01.46 The topic of our program today is the benefits of exercise. 00:01:02.29\00:01:06.19 Where're you going? Walking off. That's exercise, right? 00:01:07.76\00:01:12.87 Well you stick around because we're going to have 00:01:16.54\00:01:19.67 a walking, jumping, and maybe a little sweating - 00:01:19.87\00:01:22.61 for him - program for you today. 00:01:22.81\00:01:24.75 Roll it. 00:01:25.15\00:01:26.48 Well, we're so happy that you decided to stick around. 00:01:59.81\00:02:02.25 Thank you for joining us here in the studio of 00:02:02.45\00:02:04.29 From Sickness To Health. Today, as always, we have 00:02:04.49\00:02:07.32 an exciting program for you. 00:02:07.52\00:02:09.76 Today we're going to be talking about - as we mentioned - 00:02:09.96\00:02:12.69 exercise. And if you have a regular exercise regimen 00:02:12.89\00:02:17.83 you can "x" your size... and that's what we want to 00:02:18.03\00:02:21.37 help you do. But before we get into the discussion - 00:02:21.57\00:02:23.94 it's going to be a good one - we want to say hello to 00:02:24.14\00:02:26.68 our co-host Sickness who is on location. 00:02:26.88\00:02:30.11 How are you, sir? Oh I'm doing good. I'm playing 00:02:30.31\00:02:32.71 it safe because as you can see it's raining outside 00:02:32.91\00:02:35.32 and looks like somebody tried to exercise. 00:02:35.62\00:02:38.12 That's why they called the ambulance... so... yeah. 00:02:38.32\00:02:41.52 OK. Well we know that you have more to share. 00:02:41.72\00:02:44.46 You're going to go to another location. We'll check back in 00:02:44.66\00:02:46.39 with you. In the meantime we want to say hello to 00:02:46.59\00:02:48.46 our guests. Today we have joining us here on the program 00:02:48.66\00:02:51.93 Reidland Bredy, who is a physical therapist. 00:02:52.23\00:02:55.80 We wanted to bring in a physical therapist... somebody who knows 00:02:56.00\00:02:58.07 about the human body and how to exercise. 00:02:58.27\00:03:01.28 So thank you for being here on the program. 00:03:01.48\00:03:02.98 Glad to be here Rico. And joining you right next to 00:03:03.18\00:03:05.65 your side is your lovely wife. We like to bring in husband 00:03:05.85\00:03:09.18 and wife teams because it makes a more interesting program. 00:03:09.38\00:03:13.09 We want to introduce to you Sherry-Lynne Bredy - 00:03:13.29\00:03:16.66 um-hmm - Sherry-Lynne that is Bredy, 00:03:16.86\00:03:18.83 and she is an occupational therapist. 00:03:19.03\00:03:20.76 They are a team in ministry 00:03:20.96\00:03:23.16 and they both have a passion for health. 00:03:23.37\00:03:25.30 So welcome to the program also. 00:03:25.50\00:03:27.07 Happy to be here. I'm glad you're here as well. 00:03:27.27\00:03:29.47 Now we have found that with just regularity in an 00:03:29.77\00:03:33.48 exercise regimen a person can add 10 years of rejuvenation 00:03:33.68\00:03:38.51 to their life. That's amazing! 00:03:38.71\00:03:40.98 And the human body - I know you know this - 00:03:41.18\00:03:43.45 the human body is the only machine in the history of the 00:03:43.65\00:03:46.76 world that wears out when we don't use it. 00:03:46.96\00:03:50.26 It's the only one that wears out when we don't use it. 00:03:50.66\00:03:53.96 So... we want to use this amazing instrument 00:03:54.16\00:03:57.50 that God has given us. Why? Because we notice that 00:03:57.70\00:04:00.80 research has shown that when we don't exercise 00:04:01.00\00:04:04.01 there's a correlation with lack of exercise 00:04:04.21\00:04:06.71 and diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, 00:04:06.91\00:04:10.11 obesity, and heart disease. 00:04:10.31\00:04:12.21 So today we want to turn this around 00:04:12.41\00:04:14.98 through this discussion. But before we get into it - 00:04:15.18\00:04:17.22 I know you're anxious to get in... 00:04:17.42\00:04:18.75 I know you're anxious - let's turn real quick to 00:04:18.85\00:04:21.69 Sickness and see what he's got cooked up for us. 00:04:21.89\00:04:23.83 Sickness, where are you? Hey Rico. 00:04:24.23\00:04:26.09 I'm down here walking at the local fitness center 00:04:26.29\00:04:28.63 encouraging people to be real. 00:04:28.83\00:04:31.03 Take this guy for example. 00:04:31.23\00:04:32.83 He's as real as they get. 00:04:33.03\00:04:35.17 He REALLY doesn't want to be here. 00:04:35.37\00:04:37.97 His wife and doctor convinced him to come here 00:04:38.17\00:04:41.08 for his heart, but he can "heartly" wait to leave. 00:04:41.28\00:04:44.58 He's been spending more time at the snack bar and 00:04:45.58\00:04:47.72 the water cooler than on these silly machines. 00:04:47.92\00:04:50.42 My suggestion, of course. 00:04:50.82\00:04:52.79 Hey buddy, is that your wife? 00:04:53.19\00:04:55.22 Oh, no... coast is clear. 00:04:57.13\00:04:59.19 You know, I like to reward athletes like this 00:05:00.23\00:05:03.03 with a candy bar. Back to you, Rico. 00:05:03.23\00:05:05.47 Well, that's an interesting perspective, isn't it? 00:05:12.07\00:05:15.04 Now, exercise is important 00:05:15.44\00:05:18.78 regardless of what Sickness says. 00:05:18.98\00:05:20.98 It's important, and I think that it was 00:05:21.38\00:05:23.49 established a long time ago. I'm going to turn to my guests 00:05:23.69\00:05:26.79 now, and... was this important to God? 00:05:26.99\00:05:30.66 I mean, if God determined that exercise was important, 00:05:30.86\00:05:35.20 He probably established it in the beginning. Did He? 00:05:35.40\00:05:37.57 You know, Rico, He did. If you look in Genesis chapter 2 00:05:37.97\00:05:42.04 after He creates the whole earth and then the Garden of Eden 00:05:42.24\00:05:45.77 He creates man and says: "OK, I'm going to take man 00:05:45.97\00:05:49.11 and put him in the garden. " And He doesn't say to put man 00:05:49.31\00:05:51.81 in the garden just to eat all the fruits 00:05:52.01\00:05:53.82 and just relax and don't do anything. 00:05:54.02\00:05:55.88 He puts man in the garden to dress it and to keep it. 00:05:56.48\00:05:59.52 What does that mean: "to dress it and to keep it? " 00:05:59.72\00:06:01.39 Well any gardeners know that they have to, in order to 00:06:01.59\00:06:04.93 cultivate plants, they have to spend some time stooping and 00:06:05.13\00:06:08.06 bending and pruning and cutting and doing all sorts of gardening 00:06:08.26\00:06:12.33 activities. Not just picking flowers? No! No! 00:06:12.53\00:06:15.27 This was actually exercise... this was work. 00:06:15.47\00:06:17.77 Yes! Although it'd be nice to pick a few flowers for your 00:06:17.97\00:06:20.51 wife... and I'll bring her in that way. Thank you. 00:06:20.71\00:06:23.81 I want to just, before we talk some more about that, 00:06:24.01\00:06:26.82 as an occupational therapist what do you do exactly? 00:06:27.02\00:06:31.49 Well Rico, I work closely with physical therapists. 00:06:31.69\00:06:35.19 And what I do is I focus a lot on the function: 00:06:35.39\00:06:37.83 trying to return patients back to their normal, independent 00:06:38.03\00:06:41.53 daily life. OK. So it could go from getting in and out of that 00:06:41.73\00:06:44.97 shower to cooking, dressing, driving, getting back to 00:06:45.17\00:06:48.47 schoolwork... whatever it is. 00:06:48.67\00:06:50.31 And we sort of focus on those activities and either we 00:06:50.51\00:06:52.71 adapt it or find another way of re-creating their lives 00:06:52.91\00:06:56.41 so they can continue the best quality of life as possible. 00:06:56.61\00:07:00.08 So sort of re- introducing them into movement. 00:07:00.38\00:07:02.82 Yeah. And do you all do this together? 00:07:03.02\00:07:05.02 We can... Not very often. 00:07:05.42\00:07:08.92 We don't do it together but we can. In fact, we... 00:07:09.12\00:07:11.43 there are lots of times where if we have discussions about 00:07:11.63\00:07:14.46 patients or just to know what's the best way to do it. 00:07:14.66\00:07:17.63 Sometimes I'll consult with her and say: "How can I get this 00:07:17.83\00:07:20.54 patient to function better? " 00:07:20.74\00:07:22.17 And she'll give me ideas and say: "Hey, that works! " 00:07:22.37\00:07:24.64 Oh, OK... fantastic. And you both have a passion 00:07:24.84\00:07:28.54 for health. Why did you get into health? 00:07:28.74\00:07:30.15 Why did you go into physical therapy and 00:07:30.55\00:07:33.82 occupational therapy? I knew I wanted to help people. 00:07:34.02\00:07:36.79 It was something that I always loved to do 00:07:36.99\00:07:38.55 and even as a little girl I wanted to put band aids 00:07:38.75\00:07:41.56 on everybody. But volunteering in the hospital... when I saw 00:07:41.76\00:07:46.06 what rehabilitation does. It's helping people return back 00:07:46.26\00:07:50.23 to their life. That's what the passion was all about 00:07:50.43\00:07:53.13 is helping people get better and healthier 00:07:53.34\00:07:56.14 and returning to a good quality of life. So... 00:07:56.34\00:07:59.07 that's a passion God gave us. 00:07:59.27\00:08:00.81 Would you say that there are people that you end up having 00:08:01.11\00:08:04.25 to help in rehab, "rehabbing" them or rehabilitating them 00:08:04.45\00:08:08.32 are in a condition as a result of not taking care of 00:08:08.52\00:08:12.82 themselves? Yes, yes. Time and time again 00:08:13.02\00:08:16.46 we'll see as we're doing evaluations 00:08:16.66\00:08:18.79 there are certain questions that we'll ask. 00:08:18.99\00:08:20.76 Of course, they know their medical history. 00:08:20.96\00:08:22.56 And the top 3 that we get: diabetes - diabetes, 00:08:22.86\00:08:26.03 high blood pressure - high blood pressure, 00:08:26.23\00:08:27.57 high cholesterol. Yeah. Diabetes, high blood pressure, 00:08:27.60\00:08:31.67 high cholesterol. All of these are related to - for the most 00:08:31.87\00:08:37.11 part - to diet. Um-hmm. So diet... We find diet... 00:08:37.31\00:08:41.32 diet and lack of exercise kind of go hand in hand. 00:08:41.62\00:08:46.02 Yes they do. And we've seen in this program, 00:08:46.22\00:08:48.26 had discussions about it many times, 00:08:48.46\00:08:50.26 that we see that when people are sort of having a sedentary 00:08:50.46\00:08:53.93 lifestyle... They are on the couch, they're sitting around, 00:08:54.13\00:08:57.00 but the eating doesn't stop. 00:08:57.20\00:08:58.83 And a lot of times it's a lot of the eating of the wrong foods. 00:08:59.03\00:09:01.60 Is that right? That is correct. And so 00:09:01.80\00:09:03.51 I'm wondering though, when I heard you say diabetes though, 00:09:03.71\00:09:06.21 when I heard that I thought about the fact that 00:09:06.41\00:09:08.54 sometimes people have to go through amputations. 00:09:08.74\00:09:11.35 You know, they have their legs amputated, 00:09:11.55\00:09:14.35 their feet amputated and things like that. 00:09:14.55\00:09:16.12 Are you having to physically assist people to get back 00:09:16.32\00:09:19.92 to a normal way of life having only, you know, one limb? 00:09:20.12\00:09:23.79 Yes... absolutely. And thankfully medicine has 00:09:24.19\00:09:29.46 progressed to such a state that 00:09:29.66\00:09:32.13 we have prosthetics, we have different things that we can use 00:09:32.33\00:09:35.44 to help them to be able to walk properly and things like that. 00:09:35.64\00:09:38.04 But it's always unfortunate there's something that... 00:09:38.24\00:09:41.31 It's so preventable; you don't have to get an amputation. 00:09:41.51\00:09:44.81 Right. You don't have to end up that way. 00:09:45.01\00:09:48.32 But because of the lifestyle choices that we do - especially 00:09:48.52\00:09:51.25 in the society where we tend to sit for hours on end - 00:09:51.45\00:09:55.52 whether it's work and you just mentioned about sitting on a 00:09:55.72\00:09:58.49 couch and just eating away but never moving. 00:09:58.69\00:10:00.70 Those kinds of things contribute to, you know, the 00:10:00.90\00:10:03.57 prevalence of amputations with diabetes. 00:10:03.77\00:10:05.87 The body was meant to move. Yes! 00:10:06.27\00:10:08.50 In fact, it is said that the body was built for action. 00:10:08.90\00:10:13.78 Action is a law of our being. 00:10:14.08\00:10:16.58 In other words, we need to constantly be moving, 00:10:16.78\00:10:19.71 moving constantly. So... with that in mind 00:10:19.91\00:10:22.35 now I mentioned earlier in the program 00:10:22.55\00:10:25.55 that we see a correlation between lack of exercise 00:10:25.75\00:10:29.36 and diabetes and heart disease and all these things. 00:10:29.56\00:10:31.63 So it is good for us to under- stand the physiology of this. 00:10:32.03\00:10:36.10 What is... Why is... physiologically why is 00:10:36.30\00:10:39.80 exercise necessary. What's happening in the body? 00:10:40.00\00:10:43.20 I mean, I'll throw out one: circulation! Circulation. 00:10:43.41\00:10:49.08 Circulation is the key, right? 00:10:49.28\00:10:51.08 How our blood circulates in our body 00:10:51.38\00:10:54.12 is very key to our health. Yes it is. 00:10:54.32\00:10:56.38 And if we're not moving, what happens to our circulation? 00:10:56.58\00:10:59.02 Just slows down and nothing gets to where it needs to go 00:10:59.52\00:11:03.26 to keep your body functioning properly. 00:11:03.46\00:11:05.89 It slows down... it slows down. 00:11:06.09\00:11:07.43 Well let's kind of break that down a little bit. 00:11:07.46\00:11:09.16 Let's break this down. I like the idea of thinking that 00:11:09.36\00:11:11.67 if the blood is not moving... But what's in the blood? 00:11:12.27\00:11:16.34 What's' necessary in the blood? 00:11:16.64\00:11:18.81 Life. Why do we need it to move? 00:11:19.01\00:11:20.71 You know, if we understand the very basics of this 00:11:21.11\00:11:23.85 then people can get an understanding and then it can be 00:11:24.05\00:11:26.38 a much easier process to say: "Oh, that's what's going on. " 00:11:26.58\00:11:29.35 I don't think a lot of people realize that oxygen is necessary 00:11:29.65\00:11:33.15 and we have oxygen in the blood. 00:11:33.36\00:11:34.76 And oxygen needs to be carried to the various parts: 00:11:35.16\00:11:38.53 to the various organs, to the lungs and all these things. 00:11:38.73\00:11:41.80 And if we're not moving, it's not getting the oxygen. 00:11:42.00\00:11:43.90 Rico, I come about that all the time with my patients. 00:11:44.30\00:11:47.24 I work mostly with people with neurological issues. 00:11:47.44\00:11:50.41 Um-hmm. Strokes; brain injuries; 00:11:50.61\00:11:53.51 Parkinson's... all that kind. 00:11:53.71\00:11:55.41 And what happens is we have to really emphasize 00:11:55.61\00:11:59.85 the amount of exercise they do because they need the most, 00:12:00.05\00:12:04.42 that maximum oxygen that they can get in their brain 00:12:04.62\00:12:07.02 in order to heal. So a lot of times, especially with people 00:12:07.22\00:12:10.06 who have an underlying diabetes 00:12:10.26\00:12:12.69 their diabetes even gets better because they have been 00:12:12.89\00:12:15.26 exercising, increasing that circulation, getting that oxygen 00:12:15.46\00:12:18.67 to their brain. It actually helps their neurological issues 00:12:18.87\00:12:21.44 as well. And to piggyback off of that 00:12:21.64\00:12:24.21 when the body is not getting enough blood, first of all 00:12:24.41\00:12:27.61 blood is actually moving through your body at about 00:12:27.81\00:12:30.98 41 miles per hour. With every pump it goes 00:12:31.18\00:12:34.22 41 miles per hour - wow! - if they measure it exactly. 00:12:34.38\00:12:36.79 So now imagine... Especially when your exercising! ESPECIALLY 00:12:36.99\00:12:38.72 when you're exercising. Because it revs up the heart and 00:12:38.92\00:12:40.36 the heart rate and all that. OK! Yeah! So now imagine: if you're 00:12:40.56\00:12:42.96 sitting and you're not really doing anything 00:12:43.16\00:12:45.09 that blood slows down to... like traffic. 00:12:45.29\00:12:47.93 Like rush-hour traffic. So the blood is not even moving 00:12:48.33\00:12:51.57 any more. Wow! That's a beautiful analogy. 00:12:51.77\00:12:53.10 Rico, I'd like to bring some clarity here. 00:12:53.13\00:12:55.10 We've got to check for some clarity. OK. 00:12:56.57\00:12:58.77 What's the clarity that we need here? 00:12:58.97\00:13:00.31 I don't think that everyone is fully understanding 00:13:00.48\00:13:03.48 the advances in society. 00:13:03.68\00:13:05.61 See, I hear talk about hearts pumping and things. 00:13:05.81\00:13:08.28 Have you ever seen the American male? 00:13:08.68\00:13:11.62 We get our exercise on Sundays. 00:13:11.82\00:13:14.89 We're sitting there eating with both hands 00:13:15.09\00:13:17.86 and we watch these athletes exercise 00:13:18.06\00:13:22.46 and our hearts are pumping and we're excited. 00:13:22.66\00:13:26.10 That's enough exercise for all of us, 00:13:26.30\00:13:28.64 wouldn't you agree? I would not agree actually. 00:13:28.84\00:13:31.54 Can we get exercise by proxy? 00:13:31.84\00:13:34.78 No! There's no way to get exercise 00:13:35.18\00:13:40.08 by osmosis... by just watching or just by 00:13:40.28\00:13:42.98 being around people that exercise. Exercise is a... 00:13:43.18\00:13:46.49 is an individual thing. Your body has to 00:13:46.69\00:13:49.56 in order to get the benefits of healthy living - 00:13:49.76\00:13:52.33 yeah - you have to exercise in order to get that. 00:13:52.53\00:13:55.23 I'm actually glad he weighed in at that point. Yes! 00:13:55.53\00:13:57.53 And to see the traffic snarling behind him to a crawl 00:13:57.73\00:14:01.64 as we were talking about the way the blood is supposed to be 00:14:01.84\00:14:05.07 moving through the body. And when it's not moving 00:14:05.27\00:14:07.78 you say there's like a traffic jam. Yes. 00:14:07.98\00:14:09.74 Like a traffic jam. So you can just imagine 00:14:09.94\00:14:12.05 that your blood is supposed to be like on that super highway 00:14:12.25\00:14:15.18 moving and taking oxygen and nutrition to the various 00:14:15.38\00:14:18.95 organs of the body, but yet it's down to a crawl. 00:14:19.15\00:14:21.99 It's not a river of life but a cesspool of... death. 00:14:22.19\00:14:26.36 And the Bible says that we should be like trees 00:14:26.56\00:14:29.10 planted by the rivers of water and bringing life. 00:14:29.30\00:14:33.03 So... In fact, when you go into a desert, 00:14:33.23\00:14:35.47 when you go into a desert you will notice that... 00:14:35.67\00:14:37.87 And I live in Arizona... 00:14:38.07\00:14:39.41 that's where I live... and lots of deserts there 00:14:39.44\00:14:42.11 if you've not been there. 00:14:42.31\00:14:43.85 But some of the deserts can be so beautiful but 00:14:44.05\00:14:45.61 it's even more beautiful when you are traveling through 00:14:45.81\00:14:49.02 and you see nothing but wasteland and barrenness 00:14:49.22\00:14:51.22 and cacti and all of this 00:14:51.42\00:14:53.32 but then when you start to see green trees, 00:14:53.52\00:14:56.32 when you start to see life, you'll notice that there's a 00:14:56.52\00:14:59.79 river there. That means that life is coming through. 00:15:00.00\00:15:02.90 It's flowing and it's moving... 00:15:03.10\00:15:04.90 and that's how our body should be. Yes! 00:15:05.10\00:15:07.70 So, we've talked about some of the diseases, 00:15:07.90\00:15:09.50 some of the issues. We talked about diabetes; 00:15:09.70\00:15:11.31 talked about high blood pressure. But what is the best 00:15:11.51\00:15:15.04 kind of exercise? I imagine somebody is sitting and saying: 00:15:15.24\00:15:17.35 "Well, you know, if I can't sit and watch television 00:15:17.55\00:15:20.22 on Sunday and exercise both arms and the remote control" - 00:15:20.42\00:15:24.02 right - as Sickness said, "what exercises can I do 00:15:24.22\00:15:28.72 practically? " What kind of exercises should we be doing? 00:15:28.92\00:15:32.13 Well, on an average, the American... an average 00:15:32.33\00:15:35.36 is about 11 hours that an American sits 00:15:35.56\00:15:39.07 throughout the day. Eleven hours? Eleven hours. 00:15:39.27\00:15:41.94 Wait a minute. Eight hours are sleeping, 00:15:42.14\00:15:44.31 eleven hours? Working, sitting, watching TV. 00:15:44.51\00:15:48.74 Working. Um-hmm. OK, sitting at work, sitting at a television. 00:15:48.94\00:15:51.11 So that's a lot of sitting. Sitting while you're driving 00:15:51.31\00:15:53.08 or on the bus or the train... a lot of sitting. 00:15:53.28\00:15:55.25 So the first practical thing to do is not to sit so much. 00:15:55.55\00:15:59.45 If we are going to be moving around the house 00:15:59.65\00:16:01.62 and clean up in the house, just move around. 00:16:01.82\00:16:03.76 If we're going to be in the car for a long time, 00:16:03.96\00:16:07.76 you know, park somewhere a little further 00:16:07.96\00:16:09.66 and walk over a little longer... extra distance. 00:16:09.86\00:16:12.23 So there's quite a few little practical things that we can be 00:16:12.43\00:16:15.04 doing. Taking the stairs and not the elevator! 00:16:15.24\00:16:17.14 We love elevators, don't we? Or escalators. 00:16:17.34\00:16:18.77 Escalators, yes. Or... you can run up the escalator! 00:16:18.97\00:16:21.34 Sometimes. You could do that. 00:16:21.54\00:16:23.31 But don't run or you'll end up with us again. 00:16:23.51\00:16:27.18 So a lot of those things that she mentioned 00:16:27.38\00:16:30.02 actually are established in the Bible. 00:16:30.42\00:16:31.99 You pointed out that when God created the Garden of Eden 00:16:32.19\00:16:34.76 He put man there to dress it and to keep it. 00:16:34.96\00:16:37.06 To garden it... to tend to it, right? Um-hmm. 00:16:37.26\00:16:40.36 Notice how God did not say to: "OK, you're in the garden. 00:16:40.56\00:16:43.16 Now I want you to do some squats, some dead lifts, 00:16:43.37\00:16:46.30 some power cleans in order to keep up your body. " 00:16:46.50\00:16:49.07 God gave practical exercise for man. 00:16:49.27\00:16:52.97 And as rehabilitative specialists we give practical 00:16:53.27\00:16:57.08 exercises. Yes, we like the squats. We like to do, you know, 00:16:57.28\00:17:00.25 to give those exercises. 00:17:00.45\00:17:02.08 But a lot of the time I tell patients: "OK, you're sitting 00:17:02.28\00:17:05.19 in a chair. A commercial comes on... go up and down 00:17:05.39\00:17:07.89 from sitting to standing to sit. 00:17:08.09\00:17:10.73 Stand... sit. Ten, twenty times. " 00:17:10.93\00:17:13.73 And that'll just kind of get? That will get everything going, 00:17:13.93\00:17:15.80 yes. Wow! See... I love the point you just made. 00:17:16.00\00:17:19.13 You said: "When God did it, it was practical. " 00:17:19.33\00:17:21.37 Practical things that we can do. 00:17:21.57\00:17:23.64 Not something that you know... because I think a lot of people 00:17:23.84\00:17:25.57 get discouraged when you say: "You know what? You've gotta go 00:17:25.77\00:17:27.74 get the gym membership. And then you've got to pay for that 00:17:27.94\00:17:29.74 gym membership and you've gotta... " All these different 00:17:29.94\00:17:31.98 things you've gotta do and you say: "Ah, do I really want to do 00:17:32.18\00:17:34.02 all of that? " And we get discouraged. 00:17:34.22\00:17:35.65 But let's look at this practically. And the most 00:17:35.85\00:17:37.72 practical thing that you can do is walk. Yep! In fact, 00:17:37.92\00:17:40.52 they say walking is "the second heart. " 00:17:40.72\00:17:42.99 Why? Because we find that those calf muscles 00:17:43.19\00:17:46.26 play a role in pumping that blood up to the heart. 00:17:46.46\00:17:49.70 It gives an assist there so that the blood is actually 00:17:49.90\00:17:53.30 circulated. And when we're not walking, not exercising, 00:17:53.50\00:17:56.24 that blood becomes what? Again, we get back to the 00:17:56.44\00:17:59.74 circulation... it becomes stagnant. 00:17:59.94\00:18:02.08 This cuts off the circulation... cuts off circulation. 00:18:02.28\00:18:05.48 What happens when we cut off circulation? 00:18:05.68\00:18:07.55 Then our limbs begin to... What happens to the limbs? 00:18:07.75\00:18:11.99 They atrophy or muscles grow weak. 00:18:12.19\00:18:15.99 They get weak and they waste away. 00:18:16.19\00:18:18.39 And then that's why in the case of the type-II diabetic 00:18:18.59\00:18:22.03 when you've got that you don't have that circulation. 00:18:22.23\00:18:24.13 And by the way, most of our arteries are in our extremities, 00:18:24.33\00:18:28.77 right? Yes... yes... most of them. 00:18:28.97\00:18:30.71 So if we're not getting circulation, that's why 00:18:30.91\00:18:33.68 you end up losing those, right? Those limbs. That is correct... 00:18:33.88\00:18:37.15 yeah. So what are the types of exercise? 00:18:37.48\00:18:39.61 I think there are three types, right? 00:18:39.81\00:18:41.62 Well, yes, there are three types but there are actually two main 00:18:41.82\00:18:44.52 types that we focus on - OK - especially as 00:18:44.72\00:18:47.09 physical therapists and occupational therapists. 00:18:47.29\00:18:48.92 You have aerobic exercise. What is aerobic exercise? 00:18:49.12\00:18:52.09 Aerobic exercise to put it simply is things like 00:18:52.29\00:18:55.60 jogging, walking, biking. 00:18:55.80\00:18:58.93 Things that require... Oxygen. Things that require oxygen, yes. 00:18:59.13\00:19:02.67 So things that... With air. Yes... using oxygen a lot 00:19:02.87\00:19:05.61 but you're not overtaxing yourself. 00:19:05.81\00:19:08.64 Um-hmm... OK. And then there the second type. 00:19:08.84\00:19:11.15 It's anaerobic exercise... which is what you get with 00:19:11.35\00:19:13.82 weight lifting. That's without air. That's without oxygen, yes. 00:19:14.02\00:19:16.72 So you're just lifting weights and what's happening there 00:19:16.92\00:19:20.29 is you're breaking down the muscles 00:19:20.49\00:19:22.06 in order to rebuild them. OK. As opposed to aerobic exercise 00:19:22.26\00:19:26.23 you're actually refueling them with oxygen as you go on to 00:19:26.43\00:19:29.30 improve the endurance. And research nowadays shows 00:19:29.50\00:19:31.83 that integral training - a combination of both - 00:19:32.03\00:19:34.64 is a really good way of... So lifting some weights, right? 00:19:34.84\00:19:38.11 And it's like shorts periods of it, so you're doing a little bit 00:19:38.31\00:19:42.54 of weights and then you're going to be on the treadmill 00:19:42.74\00:19:44.51 for five minutes or walking outdoors and doing some squats. 00:19:44.71\00:19:47.25 Your actually having a combination is the best way 00:19:47.45\00:19:50.05 to lose weight and feel really good 00:19:50.25\00:19:51.92 in a shorter period of time. 00:19:52.12\00:19:53.52 Somebody just liked what you just said 'cause you said 5 min. 00:19:53.72\00:19:56.02 You said five minutes and I like that myself because 00:19:56.52\00:20:00.46 it kind of suggests that you don't have to do a full long 00:20:00.66\00:20:04.07 thing. But if you just kind of do five minutes here 00:20:04.27\00:20:06.94 then lift some weights and do another five minutes - yes - 00:20:07.14\00:20:08.77 short timed exercises. Right. In fact, sometimes 00:20:08.97\00:20:12.07 what I do is I just... I'll do a walk and I'll go for a walk 00:20:12.27\00:20:15.34 and I'll jump rope - um-hmm - for just about... real hard 00:20:15.54\00:20:18.78 for like a minute, right? And then I stop and I'll walk 00:20:18.98\00:20:21.78 some more, and I keep doing that in intervals. 00:20:21.98\00:20:24.35 Let's kind of, you know... 'cause people are watching 00:20:24.55\00:20:28.26 and they are saying: "You know, this sounds good 00:20:28.46\00:20:30.29 but maybe that's just some people talkin' about it. " 00:20:30.49\00:20:32.13 But you know we like to bring in video clips that actually 00:20:32.33\00:20:34.83 support what we're saying. So let's turn to a clip now 00:20:35.96\00:20:40.00 and let's see if the... the news reports and the other experts 00:20:40.20\00:20:43.91 what they're saying. 00:20:44.11\00:20:45.44 One in ten deaths worldwide can be blamed on illnesses 00:20:47.48\00:20:49.94 that are caused by lack of exercise. 00:20:50.15\00:20:52.15 This is about the same as the number of deaths from smoking. 00:20:52.35\00:20:55.08 Experts say this problem has reached pandemic proportions 00:20:55.28\00:20:58.19 according to new research in the medical journal Lancet. 00:20:58.39\00:21:01.06 When people don't exercise they are more likely to die 00:21:01.26\00:21:03.63 from heart disease, type II diabetes, and breast and colon 00:21:03.83\00:21:06.76 cancer. Exercise could have prevents about 60,000 deaths 00:21:06.96\00:21:10.07 from heart disease in the Americas and about 121,000 00:21:10.27\00:21:13.50 in Europe in 2008 according to the report. 00:21:13.70\00:21:16.30 The scientists looked at ten years of research on ways 00:21:16.50\00:21:18.94 to promote physical activity and identified a number of 00:21:19.14\00:21:22.18 effective strategies to help us get the 150 min. of exercise 00:21:22.38\00:21:25.51 we need each week. That just blows my mind! 00:21:25.71\00:21:28.35 Did you hear that? It said that 00:21:28.65\00:21:31.55 because of lack of exercise... They compared it to smoking! 00:21:31.95\00:21:35.92 One in ten! Why would there be such a correlation 00:21:36.12\00:21:40.83 between smoking a cigarette and just not exercising? 00:21:41.03\00:21:44.43 Well, smoking... We just mentioned that lack of exercise 00:21:44.83\00:21:48.40 causes their blood to not pump efficiently. 00:21:48.60\00:21:51.04 It makes it stagnant. OK. Smoking actually has the same 00:21:51.24\00:21:54.08 effect because smoking prevents blood flow to the extremities. 00:21:54.28\00:21:58.28 It prevents proper healing which, in order to heal properly 00:21:58.48\00:22:01.75 especially after surgeries, you need blood to get to the area. 00:22:01.95\00:22:05.75 So circulation... So smoking impedes proper circulation. 00:22:05.95\00:22:09.92 Which is why doctors always say... If you're going for 00:22:10.23\00:22:13.06 surgery they ask you: "Do you smoke? " 00:22:13.26\00:22:15.23 And throughout the surgery and the healing process 00:22:15.43\00:22:18.63 they recommend do not smoke 00:22:18.83\00:22:21.00 or else the healing process will slow down and you'll just be 00:22:21.20\00:22:24.41 getting worse. So we can look at that and say the same for 00:22:24.61\00:22:29.34 exercise. Um-hmm. A doctor could almost say: 00:22:29.54\00:22:32.71 "Are you exercising regularly? " 00:22:32.91\00:22:35.02 I mean that's the conclusion that I draw, right? 00:22:35.22\00:22:37.45 Compared, um-hmm. To compare those. 00:22:37.65\00:22:39.55 And that's the question to ask: "Are you exercising regularly? " 00:22:39.75\00:22:42.92 It's found that I believe 66% of Americans do not do 00:22:43.32\00:22:48.66 vigorous exercise for at least 30 minutes... 00:22:48.86\00:22:53.23 a week. 66% of Americans... of adult Americans... 00:22:54.24\00:22:59.41 do not exercise on a regular basis. Let me do the math. 00:22:59.61\00:23:01.94 Two-thirds. Yes. Two-thirds of Americans 00:23:02.14\00:23:05.21 don't get regular exercise. Um-hmm. 00:23:05.41\00:23:08.48 Wow! Rico, I know what that means. 00:23:08.88\00:23:11.55 What does it mean, Sickness? 00:23:11.75\00:23:13.56 That clearly means the majority know what they're doing. 00:23:13.76\00:23:16.99 When you talk to experts like me, I've done some major studies 00:23:17.19\00:23:20.00 and research and the conclusion is this: 00:23:20.20\00:23:22.70 people are perfectly happy letting other people exercise 00:23:22.90\00:23:26.84 while we stay indoors to prevent emergencies like this. 00:23:27.04\00:23:30.41 Sickness, I'm glad that you brought that out because 00:23:33.58\00:23:37.18 also lack of exercise increases the risk of death 00:23:37.38\00:23:41.52 by up to 40%. Um-hmm. That doesn't sound very happy to me. 00:23:41.72\00:23:45.59 No that doesn't. So although the majority 00:23:45.79\00:23:48.16 are not exercising and not being physically active 00:23:48.36\00:23:51.06 unfortunately the numbers point to an increased risk of death 00:23:51.26\00:23:54.70 in the future. Wow! That's amazing 'cause 00:23:55.10\00:23:58.77 I mean you can't dispute that. 00:23:58.97\00:24:00.70 I mean while it may be a nice thing to "hang" indoors 00:24:00.90\00:24:04.17 and watch TV and then be confronted with all of these 00:24:04.37\00:24:08.28 lifestyle diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, 00:24:08.48\00:24:11.38 etc. etc. And then those things require medication 00:24:11.58\00:24:16.05 which slows down the process of death a little bit, 00:24:16.35\00:24:18.75 but eventually you're heading down that downward spiral to... 00:24:18.95\00:24:22.92 to death. It's 24 billion dollars 00:24:23.12\00:24:26.86 it takes on medical expenses in one year. 00:24:27.06\00:24:31.33 It's estimated for a sedentary lifestyle 00:24:31.53\00:24:34.50 responsible is estimated 24 billion dollars. 00:24:34.70\00:24:38.21 I have to look right into the camera and say this: 00:24:38.51\00:24:40.38 twenty-four billion... that's with a B... 00:24:40.78\00:24:43.95 billion dollars in healthcare costs 00:24:44.15\00:24:48.25 because of a sedentary lifestyle. 00:24:48.45\00:24:52.12 Now... Wow! This has been... We could just go on forever. 00:24:52.32\00:24:55.56 Yes we can. Our time is wrapping up, but I'm hoping 00:24:55.76\00:24:58.16 that people have heard something that just 00:24:58.36\00:25:01.33 connects with them, that inspires them to want to just 00:25:01.53\00:25:05.20 get out and just take a walk. You know, I like to just get out 00:25:05.40\00:25:09.20 in the early morning or in the evening. 00:25:09.40\00:25:11.67 You know, on some programs we talk about how getting sunshine 00:25:11.87\00:25:15.48 and fresh air... that good oxygen. 00:25:15.68\00:25:17.58 Getting that exercise and water and how all these things 00:25:17.78\00:25:20.58 help us to just be healthier. 00:25:20.78\00:25:22.68 And you know, if you just take a walk outside 00:25:22.88\00:25:25.22 you're doing - doing every- thing - those four at one time: 00:25:25.42\00:25:28.52 fresh air, sunshine - depending on where you live - 00:25:28.72\00:25:31.96 water, and that exercise. We cannot live without it. Um-hmm. 00:25:32.16\00:25:36.83 You guys have been awesome. This has been a great program, 00:25:37.13\00:25:39.30 great discussion. Thank you. I hope that you can just go 00:25:39.50\00:25:41.77 and think about this. You don't have to join a gym. 00:25:41.97\00:25:44.57 All you have to do is get out. And if you're just sitting 00:25:44.77\00:25:46.74 around, just get up - like was shared with us - 00:25:46.94\00:25:49.48 and just stand. That can be exercise for you. 00:25:49.91\00:25:52.81 Until the next time just keep moving. 00:25:53.01\00:25:55.88 We appreciate you joining in with us and we'll see you 00:25:56.28\00:25:58.59 on our next program. Thank you... thank you so much 00:25:58.79\00:26:01.36 for being with us. Thank you for having us. 00:26:01.56\00:26:03.46 Thank you; appreciate it. 00:26:03.66\00:26:04.99 When God created Adam there in a garden he was perfect, 00:26:06.83\00:26:11.50 but yet Genesis 2:8 says that God placed Adam in a garden 00:26:11.90\00:26:15.57 to "dress it and keep it. " 00:26:15.77\00:26:17.97 This was his exercise. 00:26:18.17\00:26:20.48 Truly God knew from the beginning what we needed. 00:26:20.68\00:26:23.41 Who would ever imagine how a lack of exercise 00:26:23.81\00:26:27.78 impacts the human body? God did. 00:26:27.98\00:26:30.85 We learned today that action is the law of our body. 00:26:31.15\00:26:34.66 We were designed for action. 00:26:35.06\00:26:37.56 It keeps us healthy. When we don't move, things begin 00:26:37.76\00:26:41.46 to wear out. And in fact, some things stop moving altogether 00:26:41.66\00:26:47.07 so to speak. Look... maybe this will move you. 00:26:47.27\00:26:49.94 You cannot ignore a movement in the world today. 00:26:50.34\00:26:53.88 With the rise of these beautiful televisions with higher and 00:26:54.28\00:26:58.01 higher definition and our "smart" phones 00:26:58.21\00:27:01.72 with all these apps and social media it really gives us 00:27:01.92\00:27:05.55 a lot of activity. Just leave it alone. 00:27:05.75\00:27:08.89 Well one could safely conclude that you're 00:27:09.29\00:27:11.79 enjoying this trend. I am! 00:27:11.99\00:27:15.00 And maybe that you even started this "movement. " 00:27:15.20\00:27:17.83 I don't want to brag or anything. Well on this program 00:27:18.13\00:27:21.27 we're starting a new movement. 00:27:21.47\00:27:23.30 We're taking people from sickness - that's you - 00:27:23.51\00:27:26.17 to health. " The Bible says it. 00:27:41.66\00:27:44.33 I'm Rico Hill; I'm Sickness. 00:27:44.49\00:27:46.59 Follow God's plan and be healthy. Maranatha. 00:27:47.00\00:27:49.93
