Proverb 16:24 states, 00:00:06.56\00:00:09.54 "Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, 00:00:09.57\00:00:12.44 sweet to the soul, and health to the bones." 00:00:12.47\00:00:16.60 Hello and welcome to "From Sickness To Health." 00:00:16.63\00:00:19.21 I'm your host Rico Hill 00:00:19.24\00:00:20.71 and I'm here with Blue Guy Sickness 00:00:20.74\00:00:22.84 and today's topic is-- 00:00:22.87\00:00:25.09 Woo-hoo! 00:00:25.12\00:00:27.48 You all right? Come on. 00:01:22.62\00:01:24.92 I'll tell you why, because sugar is good for you. 00:01:24.95\00:01:28.44 And you know what? 00:01:28.47\00:01:29.50 Two particular kinds of sugar are good for you. 00:01:29.53\00:01:31.77 Number one, pure refined white sugar, 00:01:31.80\00:01:35.23 number two, high fructose corn syrup, mmm, good stuff. 00:01:35.26\00:01:40.39 Good stuff, huh? Good stuff. 00:01:40.42\00:01:42.10 Yeah. Good stuff. 00:01:42.13\00:01:43.61 All right, let's roll the program. 00:01:43.64\00:01:46.06 Roll it. 00:01:46.09\00:01:48.07 All right, would you pass me the sugar? 00:02:28.60\00:02:31.38 Ah, thank you. 00:02:31.41\00:02:33.37 Oh, thank you so much for joining us 00:02:33.40\00:02:35.12 here in the studio "From Sickness to Health" 00:02:35.15\00:02:37.42 I'm your host Rico Hill 00:02:37.45\00:02:38.74 and I'm joined by my good friend 00:02:38.77\00:02:41.55 Dr. Milton Mills, who was a critical care physician 00:02:41.58\00:02:44.79 at the United Medical Center in Washington DC. 00:02:44.82\00:02:47.07 But he's also the associate director 00:02:47.10\00:02:49.42 of preventative medicine for the physicians committee 00:02:49.45\00:02:53.13 for responsible medicine. 00:02:53.16\00:02:55.41 So he is a health educator 00:02:55.44\00:02:57.97 and we appreciate that on this program. 00:02:58.00\00:03:00.24 Today we're talking about sugar. 00:03:00.27\00:03:02.84 You've heard a little bit about this in our segment 00:03:02.87\00:03:05.51 just before we got started here in the studio. 00:03:05.54\00:03:08.34 I welcome you here to the program 00:03:08.37\00:03:10.36 to talk about sugar. 00:03:10.39\00:03:12.08 Glad to be here. I'm passing it back to you. 00:03:12.11\00:03:14.02 Thank you so much for being here with us, doc. 00:03:17.11\00:03:18.64 We're gonna talk about sugar diabetes. 00:03:18.67\00:03:21.62 We're gonna talk about how this is affecting our communities, 00:03:21.65\00:03:24.88 how it's affecting our health but we dive into our very, 00:03:24.91\00:03:29.42 very serious topic on this subject, 00:03:29.45\00:03:32.56 let us take at look at what our friend 00:03:32.59\00:03:34.16 Sickness has to say about this subject. 00:03:34.19\00:03:36.89 Sure. Let's take a look. 00:03:36.92\00:03:38.14 Here I am coming out of my favorite super market. 00:03:40.34\00:03:44.88 Got some of my favorite goods here. 00:03:44.91\00:03:46.53 If it comes in a box, a can or a bag, 00:03:46.56\00:03:48.47 it's good for you. 00:03:48.50\00:03:49.89 Now some of the brands here are blurred out, 00:03:49.92\00:03:52.05 the reasons for that is 00:03:52.08\00:03:53.24 to protect their excellent identity 00:03:53.27\00:03:55.30 that the health nuts don't want you to know about. 00:03:55.33\00:03:57.68 Here in cereal we've got 00:03:57.71\00:03:58.84 21 grams of sugar in a box of cereal. 00:03:58.87\00:04:02.25 And one of my favorites in bread, 00:04:02.28\00:04:03.89 a lot of people don't know there's sugar in bread. 00:04:03.92\00:04:06.38 And last but not least, 00:04:06.41\00:04:08.89 no one would ever imagine canned vegetables, 00:04:08.92\00:04:12.26 sugar in a can, an excellent idea. 00:04:12.29\00:04:15.40 Back to you, Rico. 00:04:15.43\00:04:16.81 Well, sugar is in everything, isn't it? 00:04:19.72\00:04:21.47 Yes, it is. 00:04:21.50\00:04:22.53 But here's the big question for us. 00:04:22.56\00:04:24.35 Is it the culprit? 00:04:24.38\00:04:25.86 Is it responsible for this thing 00:04:25.89\00:04:28.41 which we've termed sugar diabetes? 00:04:28.44\00:04:31.96 Not necessarily and not in and of itself. 00:04:31.99\00:04:36.09 It certainly plays a role. Okay. 00:04:36.12\00:04:38.36 And-- But it is not the primary cause of the diabetes epidemic 00:04:38.39\00:04:43.62 that we're seeing in the country today. 00:04:43.65\00:04:44.89 And it is an epidemic because they're saying 00:04:44.92\00:04:47.04 that by the year 2020, 00:04:47.07\00:04:50.22 something like half of us would be type 2 diabetic. 00:04:50.25\00:04:54.51 Absolutely, and that is for the general-- 00:04:54.54\00:04:57.89 for the population in general. 00:04:57.92\00:04:59.55 The levels and prevalence of diabetes 00:04:59.58\00:05:02.20 is actually much worse in communities of color. 00:05:02.23\00:05:05.90 We see much higher rates in African American communities 00:05:05.93\00:05:09.86 and Hispanic communities. 00:05:09.89\00:05:11.53 And we also, and also in Native American communities, 00:05:11.56\00:05:15.28 and we also see that in Asian American communities, 00:05:15.31\00:05:18.64 they tend to get diabetes 00:05:18.67\00:05:22.28 at much lower body weights than other Americans, 00:05:22.31\00:05:27.33 if they're eating the typical western diet. 00:05:27.36\00:05:30.37 Ah, so they-- 00:05:30.40\00:05:31.59 you don't necessarily have to have the obesity 00:05:31.62\00:05:34.92 associated with diabetes in the Asian communities. 00:05:34.95\00:05:38.85 If you're eating the wrong food. 00:05:38.88\00:05:40.23 So it's really come-- So what I'm hearing you say 00:05:40.26\00:05:42.77 is that it's sort of coming down to the food again. 00:05:42.80\00:05:45.32 Absolutely. 00:05:45.35\00:05:46.47 All right, let's drill down on this. 00:05:46.50\00:05:48.06 First of all let's talk about, what is diabetes? 00:05:48.09\00:05:50.29 What are we talking? 00:05:50.32\00:05:51.35 What's the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes? 00:05:51.38\00:05:54.43 Okay, that's a very, very excellent question 00:05:54.46\00:05:57.64 because type 1 daib-- 00:05:57.67\00:05:58.86 They're very, very different diseases. 00:05:58.89\00:06:00.89 They used to be called juvenile onset, 00:06:00.92\00:06:04.01 type 1 used to be referred to as juvenile onset diabetes. 00:06:04.04\00:06:08.30 And type 2 used to be referred to as adult onset diabetes. 00:06:08.33\00:06:12.63 Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that-- 00:06:12.66\00:06:17.47 and what that means is that's a disease 00:06:17.50\00:06:19.82 where the body's immune system attacks 00:06:19.85\00:06:23.45 and destroys the cells in our pancreas 00:06:23.48\00:06:26.54 that actually make insulin. 00:06:26.57\00:06:28.56 Is that the beta cells? The beta cells exactly. 00:06:28.59\00:06:31.55 And the beta cells make insulin and insulin is the hormone 00:06:31.58\00:06:35.58 that tells all of the cells in the body 00:06:35.61\00:06:38.28 to take up blood sugar, 00:06:38.31\00:06:39.55 to keep the blood sugar level within the normal range. 00:06:39.58\00:06:43.54 Well, if the body destroys all of those beta cells, 00:06:43.57\00:06:47.19 then there is no insulin in the body. 00:06:47.22\00:06:50.11 The blood sugar level goes completely out of control, 00:06:50.14\00:06:54.43 but more importantly the body is unable to metabolize glucose 00:06:54.46\00:07:01.27 and that becomes a life threatening condition. 00:07:01.30\00:07:04.97 That's type 1 diabetes. That's type 1 diabetes. 00:07:05.00\00:07:07.24 So this is where the pancreas 00:07:07.27\00:07:08.67 is not producing insulin at all. 00:07:08.70\00:07:10.35 Any insulin whatsoever. Okay. 00:07:10.38\00:07:12.90 And just to make a very important point, 00:07:12.93\00:07:16.85 that can also be related to diet in this way. 00:07:16.88\00:07:20.66 Studies have shown that if children 00:07:20.69\00:07:23.41 are introduced to cow's milk before there are a year old, 00:07:23.44\00:07:28.65 it will markedly inc-- or significantly, I should say, 00:07:28.68\00:07:32.42 increase their risk of going on to develop-- 00:07:32.45\00:07:35.88 to develop type 1 diabetes. 00:07:35.91\00:07:38.14 Cow's milk. Cow's milk. 00:07:38.17\00:07:39.20 We're talking about the milk that many, many of us drink 00:07:39.23\00:07:43.07 and give to our children at a very young age. 00:07:43.10\00:07:44.70 Absolutely. Cow's milk in store. 00:07:44.73\00:07:46.28 Right, so the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 00:07:46.31\00:07:49.72 that children not be introduced to cow's milk 00:07:49.75\00:07:54.84 until they are more than one year of age. 00:07:54.87\00:07:58.44 Personally, I will recommend 00:07:58.47\00:07:59.74 that you not introduce it to them at all. 00:07:59.77\00:08:02.40 The best milk to feed your children, 00:08:02.43\00:08:04.63 of course, is mom's breast milk. 00:08:04.66\00:08:07.41 But certainly you should absolutely 00:08:07.44\00:08:09.93 not give them cow's milk 00:08:09.96\00:08:11.80 until they are more than a year old. 00:08:11.83\00:08:14.68 But let's talk about the main culprit 00:08:14.71\00:08:17.26 in this epidemic of diabetes. 00:08:17.29\00:08:18.58 Hold it, before we do that, 00:08:18.61\00:08:19.64 let's hear, what is type 2 diabetes. 00:08:19.67\00:08:21.45 That's what we're about to talk about. 00:08:21.48\00:08:22.52 Okay, good, good. 00:08:22.55\00:08:23.58 That is the so-called adult onset 00:08:23.61\00:08:27.09 and the reason we no longer refer to it 00:08:27.12\00:08:28.99 as adult onset diabetes 00:08:29.02\00:08:30.76 is because we're now seeing type 2 diabetes in children 00:08:30.79\00:08:34.43 as young as 11 and 12 years of age. 00:08:34.46\00:08:38.27 Because of the epidemic of pediatric obesity 00:08:38.30\00:08:41.80 and type 2 diabetes is related to something called 00:08:41.83\00:08:46.49 insulin resistance. 00:08:46.52\00:08:47.99 So-- Insulin resistance. 00:08:48.02\00:08:49.52 Right. Okay. 00:08:49.55\00:08:50.58 And type-- Remember, in type 1 diabetes, 00:08:50.61\00:08:52.81 the body is not making any insulin. 00:08:52.84\00:08:55.34 Well, in type 2 diabetes, the body is making insulin, 00:08:55.37\00:08:59.27 it's just that the cells no longer respond to insulin 00:08:59.30\00:09:03.32 in a normal fashion. 00:09:03.35\00:09:05.07 So what I-- the way I explain it to my patients, 00:09:05.10\00:09:08.15 I tell them it's like the body becomes 00:09:08.18\00:09:10.57 partially deaf to insulin. 00:09:10.60\00:09:13.07 So what happens is just like when we become deaf, 00:09:13.10\00:09:18.30 people try to make us hear them in a couple of different ways. 00:09:18.33\00:09:23.37 One, they try to shout at us or speak louder. 00:09:23.40\00:09:26.58 So of the things that pancreas does 00:09:26.61\00:09:28.80 is it starts to pump out more and more insulin. 00:09:28.83\00:09:33.09 So the amount of insulin in our body tends to go up 00:09:33.12\00:09:37.18 and we end up with very high insulin levels 00:09:37.21\00:09:40.03 that tends to make people gain weight, 00:09:40.06\00:09:42.45 it tends to make them accumulate fat, 00:09:42.48\00:09:44.82 it can also raise a risk 00:09:44.85\00:09:47.16 for a number of inflammatory conditions 00:09:47.19\00:09:50.69 and over time, it doesn't work as well. 00:09:50.72\00:09:53.48 So let me just make sure I'm clear. 00:09:53.51\00:09:55.46 So the first way that the body 00:09:55.49\00:09:57.25 or the pancreas may respond in this sort of death analogy 00:09:57.28\00:10:01.84 that you're using is, it will begin to speak louder. 00:10:01.87\00:10:05.26 It's going to make an extra added effort 00:10:05.29\00:10:08.43 to try to communicate. 00:10:08.46\00:10:10.27 But hold on, I want to hear the other ways 00:10:10.30\00:10:12.08 that that may happen. 00:10:12.11\00:10:13.14 But let's take a look at a video, 00:10:13.17\00:10:15.43 a news clip that may give us some insight 00:10:15.46\00:10:17.61 that may corroborate what we're saying 00:10:17.64\00:10:19.47 because we like to hear from them as well. 00:10:19.50\00:10:21.17 So let's take a look. 00:10:21.20\00:10:22.53 In this morning's Health Watch, the alarming rate of diabetes, 00:10:24.94\00:10:27.48 a new study finds a number of adults 00:10:27.51\00:10:29.14 around the world living with the disease 00:10:29.17\00:10:31.26 has more than doubled in the past 30 years. 00:10:31.29\00:10:33.75 Medical correspondent, Dr. Jennifer Ashton 00:10:33.78\00:10:35.46 has more on this epidemic for us this morning. 00:10:35.49\00:10:37.87 Doc, good morning. Good morning to you, Chris. 00:10:37.90\00:10:39.66 In the US alone, experts predict that more than 00:10:39.69\00:10:41.94 half the adult population will be dealing 00:10:41.97\00:10:43.86 with some form of diabetes by the year 2020. 00:10:43.89\00:10:47.04 And while some cases are tied to family history, 00:10:47.07\00:10:50.08 many more are tied to obesity 00:10:50.11\00:10:52.28 and unhealthy life style choices. 00:10:52.31\00:10:55.06 Three years ago, 32 years old Gwen Seton began feeling 00:10:55.09\00:10:58.26 exhausted after almost every meal. 00:10:58.29\00:11:00.67 When she went to her doctor, a routine blood test 00:11:00.70\00:11:03.05 quickly diagnosed her problem as diabetes. 00:11:03.08\00:11:06.21 I was actually quite shocked 00:11:06.24\00:11:07.80 when I got it as young as I did, 00:11:07.83\00:11:09.38 usually it's a later onset disease in my family. 00:11:09.41\00:11:14.21 Seton was at high risk for diabetes 00:11:14.24\00:11:16.10 because of her family history. 00:11:16.13\00:11:17.94 Now she must follow strict dietary rules, 00:11:17.97\00:11:20.41 take insulin injections 00:11:20.44\00:11:21.71 and test her blood sugar level up to seven times a day, 00:11:21.74\00:11:24.73 all to make sure her diabetes is kept under control. 00:11:24.76\00:11:28.31 It gets frustrating, it's a constant consideration. 00:11:28.34\00:11:31.42 It's not impossible to deal with 00:11:31.45\00:11:33.59 but it is something that you always have to be mindful of. 00:11:33.62\00:11:37.54 A new study indicates that more people 00:11:37.57\00:11:39.58 than ever before are now living with the debilitating disease. 00:11:39.61\00:11:42.77 In 1980, an estimated 00:11:42.80\00:11:44.60 153 million people were living with diabetes. 00:11:44.63\00:11:48.47 In 2010, that number more than doubled jumping to 347 million. 00:11:48.50\00:11:55.12 You know, doctor, I really feel for this-- 00:11:55.15\00:11:57.09 this woman because you see 00:11:57.12\00:11:58.67 that she has to check her blood sugar seven times a day. 00:11:58.70\00:12:02.39 That's pricking herself seven times a day. 00:12:02.42\00:12:05.55 This is not a pleasant experience, is it? 00:12:05.58\00:12:08.63 No, it's not. 00:12:08.66\00:12:09.69 And I would even add that she is not your typical profile 00:12:09.72\00:12:14.80 for someone who has type 2 diabetic. 00:12:14.83\00:12:17.10 Now in that little clip we saw, they said 00:12:17.13\00:12:19.21 it's because of her family genetics. 00:12:19.24\00:12:22.98 Right, right. 00:12:23.01\00:12:24.43 Absolutely that-- It's very clear 00:12:24.46\00:12:27.72 that certain people have a genetic predisposition... 00:12:27.75\00:12:31.95 Yeah. ...To type 2 diabetes. 00:12:31.98\00:12:34.43 Now does that mean that if several family members 00:12:34.46\00:12:38.47 of yours have a history of diabetes 00:12:38.50\00:12:42.05 that you are bound to get it? 00:12:42.08\00:12:44.95 No. 00:12:44.98\00:12:47.26 Depending on the lifestyle choices you make, 00:12:47.29\00:12:50.36 you can make choices that will make it less likely 00:12:50.39\00:12:54.92 that you will go on to develop diabetes. 00:12:54.95\00:12:57.79 Something we always say on this program, 00:12:57.82\00:12:59.17 we say, you know, genetics loads the gun 00:12:59.20\00:13:02.88 but your lifestyle pulls the trigger. 00:13:02.91\00:13:05.27 And I think that they have a science now, 00:13:05.30\00:13:07.15 it's called epigenetics. 00:13:07.18\00:13:08.21 Sure. 00:13:08.24\00:13:09.27 How the genes will express themselves 00:13:09.30\00:13:12.33 is how you basically live your lifestyle. 00:13:12.36\00:13:14.93 And we heard some of that in that clip. 00:13:14.96\00:13:16.34 But before we went over to the clip, 00:13:16.37\00:13:18.64 you were breaking down that the pancreas 00:13:18.67\00:13:21.16 and the insulin will begin to-- 00:13:21.19\00:13:22.70 or the pancreas will release the insulin 00:13:22.73\00:13:24.13 but it will be shouting, trying to get-- 00:13:24.16\00:13:26.61 to communicate to the cells. 00:13:26.64\00:13:27.88 But you had some other-- had to cut you off. 00:13:27.91\00:13:30.05 Well, let me just give you one quick little analogy 00:13:30.08\00:13:32.58 that I always give to my patients. 00:13:32.61\00:13:34.20 Because I hear this a lot, they say well, you know, 00:13:34.23\00:13:36.22 my grandmother had diabetes, 00:13:36.25\00:13:37.89 my parents have it, my brother has it. 00:13:37.92\00:13:40.29 Yeah. I'm gonna get it. 00:13:40.32\00:13:41.51 And I tell 'em, you know what, having lungs means 00:13:41.54\00:13:44.59 that you are genetically predisposed to drowning 00:13:44.62\00:13:47.47 but only if you get into water over your head. 00:13:47.50\00:13:50.65 And likewise... I like that. 00:13:50.68\00:13:51.73 ...You may have a genetic predisposition to diabetes 00:13:51.76\00:13:55.20 but only if you are in a high-risk environment, 00:13:55.23\00:13:57.68 by which I mean, 00:13:57.71\00:13:58.74 if you're eating the type of diet 00:13:58.77\00:14:01.01 that will predispose you to developing that diabetes. 00:14:01.04\00:14:04.16 And what kind-- what are those risk facts? 00:14:04.19\00:14:06.60 It's a diet that's high in fat, low in fiber, 00:14:06.63\00:14:10.10 high in animal protein and processed carbohydrates. 00:14:10.13\00:14:14.33 And we can talk about what those things are. 00:14:14.36\00:14:17.46 There are other factors that play a role: 00:14:17.49\00:14:19.47 smoking, a lack of exercise 00:14:19.50\00:14:21.92 and of course, gaining excess weight. 00:14:21.95\00:14:24.84 Okay, so and you have some-- I want you to walk us through. 00:14:24.87\00:14:28.74 We have some slides and things like 00:14:28.77\00:14:30.10 that we're gonna talk about. 00:14:30.13\00:14:31.38 But I wanted to-- I was really caught up on the first way 00:14:31.41\00:14:35.52 it's gonna do it, it's gonna yell to the-- 00:14:35.55\00:14:38.42 to the cells, open up so that we can insert some glucose. 00:14:38.45\00:14:42.48 What other ways will the-- the insulin 00:14:42.51\00:14:45.32 try to communicate to the cell? 00:14:45.35\00:14:46.69 Well, I mean, basically what happens is 00:14:46.72\00:14:49.23 the pancreas continues to pump out more and more insulin 00:14:49.26\00:14:53.45 but eventually that simply becomes ineffective. 00:14:53.48\00:14:57.63 The cells become so resistant to the insulin, 00:14:57.66\00:15:01.37 it just stops working effectively. 00:15:01.40\00:15:03.98 And then at that point, 00:15:04.01\00:15:05.61 the person's blood sugar rises out of the normal range 00:15:05.64\00:15:09.64 and they have frank diabetes. 00:15:09.67\00:15:11.91 And so that's the point at which people begin to notice 00:15:11.94\00:15:14.88 that they are thirsty a lot, that they are peeing a lot. 00:15:14.91\00:15:18.00 Excessive urination. 00:15:18.03\00:15:19.27 Exactly. Yeah. 00:15:19.30\00:15:21.02 And that they may have-- Excessive hunger. 00:15:21.05\00:15:22.71 Right, or infections or wounds that won't heal. 00:15:22.74\00:15:26.23 And they go to the doctor or like the lady in the clip, 00:15:26.26\00:15:29.14 she's tired all the time. 00:15:29.17\00:15:30.69 They go to the doctor, they measure their blood sugar 00:15:30.72\00:15:33.52 and they find, oh, my goodness, my blood sugar's 300 00:15:33.55\00:15:36.81 and they are diagnosed with diabetes 00:15:36.84\00:15:38.55 and they have to go on medication. 00:15:38.58\00:15:41.03 And if the diabetes is mild, they may go on oral medications 00:15:41.06\00:15:47.89 which will stimulate the pancreas 00:15:47.92\00:15:49.83 to release even more insulin. 00:15:49.86\00:15:52.73 Which will bring the blood sugar down 00:15:52.76\00:15:55.80 but if nothing is done to change the diet lifestyle, 00:15:55.83\00:15:59.41 that's eventually gonna become ineffective in and of itself-- 00:15:59.44\00:16:02.57 And then what do they have to do? 00:16:02.60\00:16:04.13 Well, then they will-- 00:16:04.16\00:16:05.32 Again, if they don't change their diet lifestyle, 00:16:05.35\00:16:08.54 they're eventually gonna end up injecting insulin 00:16:08.57\00:16:12.01 because-- and it becomes kind of a vicious cycle 00:16:12.04\00:16:15.59 because the problem is that they're not treating 00:16:15.62\00:16:19.00 the underlying disease, which is the lifestyle 00:16:19.03\00:16:23.07 that is creating the insulin resistance. 00:16:23.10\00:16:26.23 Okay, now, right here, you're listening at home 00:16:26.26\00:16:29.32 and you're saying, wait a minute, that's me. 00:16:29.35\00:16:32.20 I'm either taking the oral medication 00:16:32.23\00:16:34.66 or I'm taking the daily injections of insulin. 00:16:34.69\00:16:38.60 And I'm trying to regularly-- 00:16:38.63\00:16:39.87 but it's not getting any better. 00:16:39.90\00:16:41.46 Is this thing reversible? 00:16:41.49\00:16:42.67 Now we just started out the program, 00:16:42.70\00:16:44.08 sort of tongue-in-cheek with the passing of some sugar, 00:16:44.11\00:16:48.42 because most people believe that, 00:16:48.45\00:16:51.77 you know, if my issue is due to not bec-- 00:16:51.80\00:16:56.83 anything other than I've had a lot of pies. 00:16:56.86\00:16:59.40 I've had a lot of cookies and cakes and-- 00:16:59.43\00:17:01.41 there are just replete with sugar 00:17:01.44\00:17:03.51 but that's really not the whole truth, is it? 00:17:03.54\00:17:05.73 No, it is not. 00:17:05.76\00:17:06.79 We want to really give people the practical understanding 00:17:06.82\00:17:09.73 of what's really behind this-- this culprit. 00:17:09.76\00:17:13.43 What's really happening here 00:17:13.46\00:17:15.64 when people are having to regulate their blood sugar 00:17:15.67\00:17:18.65 with all these medications 00:17:18.68\00:17:20.12 that really don't help them ultimately. 00:17:20.15\00:17:22.50 Don't reverse the disease. 00:17:22.53\00:17:23.87 Let's share that with the audience. 00:17:23.90\00:17:25.76 Okay, well, let's look at-- 00:17:25.79\00:17:27.96 Let's just focus in on African Americans. 00:17:27.99\00:17:30.80 Okay. 00:17:30.83\00:17:32.32 If you look at the prevalence of diabetes 00:17:32.35\00:17:35.74 and pre-diabetes in the African American communities, 00:17:35.77\00:17:41.14 in African American community, it is very, very high. 00:17:41.17\00:17:45.38 But if you actually look at the prevalence 00:17:45.41\00:17:47.07 in West Africa, it's very, very low. 00:17:47.10\00:17:50.19 The genetic backgrounds of those populations is the same. 00:17:50.22\00:17:53.66 Because we know African Americans 00:17:53.69\00:17:55.30 were drawn from West Africa. 00:17:55.33\00:17:57.23 Sure. 00:17:57.26\00:17:58.39 What's different? It's the diet. 00:17:58.42\00:18:01.30 Traditional West African diets are low in fat, 00:18:01.33\00:18:04.31 they're plant-based, 00:18:04.34\00:18:05.68 they contain no dairy and very small amounts of meat. 00:18:05.71\00:18:10.39 Let's break that down for people. 00:18:10.42\00:18:11.48 So we're talking about, it's low fat 00:18:11.51\00:18:13.79 so there's not a lot of animal saturated fat, flesh foods. 00:18:13.82\00:18:18.03 It's plant-based so we're talking about-- 00:18:18.06\00:18:20.15 Very high in fiber. Fiber. 00:18:20.18\00:18:22.39 Lots of grains, lots of green leafy vegetables... 00:18:22.42\00:18:24.94 Lots of beans, yes, absolutely. 00:18:24.97\00:18:27.27 Fruits and things like that. 00:18:27.30\00:18:29.02 Fruits and vegetables. Okay. 00:18:29.05\00:18:30.20 Yes, and no dairy foods. 00:18:30.23\00:18:32.17 So and when we say dairy, 00:18:32.20\00:18:33.31 we're talking about-- we're talking about milk. 00:18:33.34\00:18:35.82 Right. We're talking about cheese. 00:18:35.85\00:18:37.31 We're talking about even the beloved ice cream, right? 00:18:37.34\00:18:40.21 Yes, absolutely. 00:18:40.24\00:18:41.27 Butter, all those things come under the dairy category. 00:18:41.30\00:18:43.89 Category. Continue. 00:18:43.92\00:18:45.29 Yes, and, um, and as I said low in meat. 00:18:45.32\00:18:48.38 They don't eat a lot of-- 00:18:48.41\00:18:49.68 a lot of beef and pork and chicken. 00:18:49.71\00:18:53.65 And they have very small amounts of meat. 00:18:53.68\00:18:56.14 If they do eat some, it's very-- 00:18:56.17\00:18:58.21 It's not-- It's not their main staple. 00:18:58.24\00:19:00.12 Exactly. They are small amounts. 00:19:00.15\00:19:02.58 They're eating primarily the, you know, the beans, 00:19:02.61\00:19:06.03 the grains and the green leafy plant foods 00:19:06.06\00:19:10.29 or root vegetables like yams and so forth. 00:19:10.32\00:19:13.84 And as a result, very low rates of diabetes 00:19:13.87\00:19:17.36 but when they move to, say, Europe or... 00:19:17.39\00:19:22.91 America. 00:19:22.94\00:19:23.97 Transfer to America, 00:19:24.00\00:19:25.41 adopt a more western style lifestyle, 00:19:25.44\00:19:28.87 their rates of diabetes climb and become equal to ours. 00:19:28.90\00:19:32.34 Okay, that tells me it's the food that they are... 00:19:32.37\00:19:36.54 Eating. 00:19:36.57\00:19:37.60 ...Consuming once they come here. 00:19:37.63\00:19:39.94 Right. It's not the genetics. 00:19:39.97\00:19:41.81 You know, doc, a lot of people don't know 00:19:41.84\00:19:43.45 that it's more than genetics. 00:19:43.48\00:19:45.17 So and clearly this is demonstrated 00:19:45.20\00:19:48.87 in what people are saying 00:19:48.90\00:19:51.42 and we always like to hear what they're saying. 00:19:51.45\00:19:53.42 Let's take a look real quick before we bring in some graphs 00:19:53.45\00:19:55.79 and some slides to really prove this point. 00:19:55.82\00:19:57.82 Let's hear what Sickness found out on street. 00:19:57.85\00:19:59.73 Sure. 00:19:59.76\00:20:01.87 I'm here with Damien today in this awfully sunny place 00:20:01.90\00:20:07.41 and my friend, Damien, I want to ask you some questions. 00:20:07.44\00:20:10.01 What do you think of sugar? 00:20:10.04\00:20:12.52 It's bad for you. 00:20:12.55\00:20:15.24 Don't you think sugar would be insulted right now? 00:20:15.27\00:20:17.10 Totally. 00:20:17.13\00:20:18.16 Stevie, what do you think of sugar? 00:20:18.19\00:20:20.38 It's yummy. It's yummy. 00:20:20.41\00:20:22.21 Boy, these are words I like to hear. 00:20:22.24\00:20:24.27 What types of ways do you like to eat your sugar? 00:20:24.30\00:20:26.95 On tarts, on anything, really. 00:20:26.98\00:20:30.50 I love these people. 00:20:30.53\00:20:31.82 Now you noticed that accent. 00:20:31.85\00:20:32.94 It's from Australia, right? 00:20:32.97\00:20:35.05 How do you feel after you eat sugar? 00:20:35.08\00:20:37.59 Shaky. 00:20:37.62\00:20:38.65 Shaky, like in a good way, right? 00:20:38.68\00:20:40.25 Yeah. 00:20:40.28\00:20:41.31 Lots of energy. Yeah. 00:20:41.34\00:20:42.39 Just want to tackle the day with all that energy. 00:20:42.42\00:20:44.01 Yeah. 00:20:44.04\00:20:45.07 Oh, man, I love these people from down under, lots of sugar. 00:20:45.10\00:20:47.77 Lot's of love. You don't eat any sugar? 00:20:47.80\00:20:49.41 I do, it depends if it's organic or not. 00:20:49.44\00:20:52.03 Organic. 00:20:52.06\00:20:53.09 Oh, man, you sound like those vegetarians. 00:20:53.12\00:20:55.28 What do you think of sugar? 00:20:55.31\00:20:57.21 Got to have it. Got to have it. 00:20:57.24\00:20:58.86 I already liked this one. I love it. 00:20:58.89\00:21:01.51 Love it? Love it. 00:21:01.54\00:21:02.59 Would you say you love it too? Yeah. 00:21:02.62\00:21:05.31 We love sugar! 00:21:05.34\00:21:07.07 How do you like to eat your sugar? 00:21:07.10\00:21:08.35 I like to eat it with coffee or my cereal in the morning. 00:21:08.38\00:21:14.92 These refined people love sugar. 00:21:14.95\00:21:17.73 Need I say more? Back to you, Rico. 00:21:17.76\00:21:22.30 Anybody know of a place to get a donut? 00:21:22.33\00:21:24.88 Down the street. Down the street. 00:21:24.91\00:21:27.11 Again, you know, as you can see, 00:21:29.55\00:21:32.05 people think it's popsicles, they think it's sodas, 00:21:32.08\00:21:34.22 they think it's, you know, just the sugary things 00:21:34.25\00:21:36.33 but the picture's much broader than that, isn't it? 00:21:36.36\00:21:39.00 Absolutely, absolutely. 00:21:39.03\00:21:42.10 It's more than just refined sugars and carbohydrates. 00:21:42.13\00:21:46.56 One of the biggest factors is dietary fact, 00:21:46.59\00:21:51.29 as this slide here shows. 00:21:51.32\00:21:53.28 Let's take a look at that. 00:21:53.31\00:21:54.34 This is a slide showing three different 00:21:54.37\00:21:59.76 blood sugar profiles in one subject 00:21:59.79\00:22:02.41 as a result of three diets with different levels of fat. 00:22:02.44\00:22:07.63 The red is a high fat diet. 00:22:07.66\00:22:10.52 The yellow is an intermediate fat diet 00:22:10.55\00:22:13.22 and the green is a low fat diet. 00:22:13.25\00:22:16.78 And the-- in the red you have high-fat low-carb, 00:22:16.81\00:22:20.13 in the green you have high-carb low-fat. 00:22:20.16\00:22:22.88 And what you see is that on the high fat diet 00:22:22.91\00:22:25.84 you have very poor blood sugar control. 00:22:25.87\00:22:29.69 The blood sugar spikes to extremely high levels, 00:22:29.72\00:22:33.31 stays high for an extended period of time 00:22:33.34\00:22:36.65 and then slowly comes down. 00:22:36.68\00:22:39.51 Whereas on the high-carb low-fat diet, 00:22:39.54\00:22:43.66 you have a much more favorable blood sugar profile. 00:22:43.69\00:22:47.73 Where the blood sugar level rises only to a modest degree 00:22:47.76\00:22:52.42 and then stays in a relatively constant range 00:22:52.45\00:22:55.77 for an extended period of time. 00:22:55.80\00:22:57.36 And that's exactly what you want 00:22:57.39\00:22:59.73 because when you eat a meal, 00:22:59.76\00:23:01.24 you want that energy level to come into your body 00:23:01.27\00:23:04.89 in a controlled fashion. 00:23:04.92\00:23:06.49 So you have the energy to exercise 00:23:06.52\00:23:08.28 and do your activates of daily living. 00:23:08.31\00:23:09.98 Sure. And do what you need to do. 00:23:10.01\00:23:12.65 So what we know is that dietary fat interferes 00:23:12.68\00:23:17.36 with the ability of insulin to do its job. 00:23:17.39\00:23:20.35 And that's one of the primary problems with the western diet, 00:23:20.38\00:23:23.43 it's extremely high in fat 00:23:23.46\00:23:25.44 and that's what causes a lot of insulin resistance. 00:23:25.47\00:23:29.23 But other factors that contribute 00:23:29.26\00:23:31.50 to insulin resistance are not only the amount of fact 00:23:31.53\00:23:34.96 that we eat but animal protein. 00:23:34.99\00:23:37.92 Animal protein increases insulin resistance. 00:23:37.95\00:23:41.80 So the more animal protein you eat 00:23:41.83\00:23:44.37 and that could be beef, chicken, pork, shellfish, 00:23:44.40\00:23:48.83 you name it, that's gonna also 00:23:48.86\00:23:51.20 increase your insulin resistance. 00:23:51.23\00:23:53.02 Why does-- I say I want to-- I want to understand that-- 00:23:53.05\00:23:55.23 I want our audience to understand 00:23:55.26\00:23:56.75 that insulin resistance, 00:23:56.78\00:23:58.06 we're talking about the amount of fat or we-- 00:23:58.09\00:24:01.55 I've heard it referred to as like bathing the cells in fat, 00:24:01.58\00:24:04.82 coating the outside of the cell to the extent 00:24:04.85\00:24:08.12 that the receptors to receive that-- 00:24:08.15\00:24:12.31 that insulin that unlocks the cell to put in the glucose, 00:24:12.34\00:24:17.23 it's bathed in fat and grease. 00:24:17.26\00:24:21.17 Or is it fat that's on the inside or is it both? 00:24:21.20\00:24:23.76 Well, it's-- I guess you could think of it 00:24:23.79\00:24:27.13 as sort of coating the cell in these fatty molecules 00:24:27.16\00:24:31.61 that don't allow the receptors to work properly. 00:24:31.64\00:24:35.00 We don't-- Quite frankly, 00:24:35.03\00:24:36.96 we don't know all of the molecular mechanisms 00:24:36.99\00:24:39.65 by which fat interferes with insulin's activity. 00:24:39.68\00:24:42.49 We just know that it in fact doesn't hurt. 00:24:42.52\00:24:45.84 We don't know the-- 00:24:45.87\00:24:47.68 all of the precise molecular mechanisms 00:24:47.71\00:24:49.71 by which animal protein 00:24:49.74\00:24:51.58 interferes with insulin's activity. 00:24:51.61\00:24:54.21 But we just, we know that it occurs. 00:24:54.24\00:24:56.30 We know that when people switch 00:24:56.33\00:24:58.14 from animal proteins to plant proteins, 00:24:58.17\00:25:01.03 their blood sugar profiles improve dramatically. 00:25:01.06\00:25:05.00 Other factors that improve insulin decrease, 00:25:05.03\00:25:09.31 insulin resistance are eliminating 00:25:09.34\00:25:12.23 dairy foods from the diet. 00:25:12.26\00:25:14.48 Stopping smoking and also, of course, 00:25:14.51\00:25:18.48 increasing the amount of fiber in the diet. 00:25:18.51\00:25:21.07 And fiber actually does this in a number of ways. 00:25:21.10\00:25:25.03 One, it increases satiety, 00:25:25.06\00:25:29.63 so that you tend to eat less. 00:25:29.66\00:25:32.07 You're full. Right, you feel full. 00:25:32.10\00:25:34.23 Delays the emptying of the stomach 00:25:34.26\00:25:36.75 so that food is released into the small intestine 00:25:36.78\00:25:40.16 in a more controlled fashion. 00:25:40.19\00:25:42.24 But the other thing is that, 00:25:42.27\00:25:43.67 when fiber gets to your large intestine, 00:25:43.70\00:25:46.19 it's broken down by the bacteria into compounds 00:25:46.22\00:25:49.45 called short-chain fatty acids that go to the liver 00:25:49.48\00:25:53.82 and stop the liver from making glucose. 00:25:53.85\00:25:57.56 Whoa, whoa, whoa. 00:25:57.59\00:25:59.43 So someone's watching and they're saying, 00:25:59.46\00:26:02.59 I'm a type 2 diabetic. 00:26:02.62\00:26:04.45 Okay, I've heard all the information, 00:26:04.48\00:26:05.76 it sounds great. 00:26:05.79\00:26:07.38 But I-- What I want to know is can I reverse it? 00:26:07.41\00:26:10.50 Yeah. Can I get off this medication? 00:26:10.53\00:26:13.03 Now we don't recommend, 00:26:13.06\00:26:14.71 suggest anybody get off any kind of medications 00:26:14.74\00:26:16.62 without consulting your physician, 00:26:16.65\00:26:19.05 but people are wondering, 00:26:19.08\00:26:20.83 can I turn this around and how long would it take? 00:26:20.86\00:26:23.22 Yes, there is-- 00:26:23.25\00:26:24.28 Real quick 'cause we're running out of time. 00:26:24.31\00:26:25.65 Sure, there is no question that you can reverse diabetes. 00:26:25.68\00:26:30.64 I've done it with my patients that if you-- 00:26:30.67\00:26:34.15 if a patient is willing to make the kinds of changes 00:26:34.18\00:26:38.40 it takes to get off these medicines, 00:26:38.43\00:26:41.54 yes, you can reverse diabetes. 00:26:41.57\00:26:43.52 I've had patients who've become vegan vegetarians 00:26:43.55\00:26:46.44 and they were able to get off all of their medicines. 00:26:46.47\00:26:49.54 I've had-- I had a patient, I won't give out her name 00:26:49.57\00:26:52.31 because that's not appropriate, she was on insulin twice a day, 00:26:52.34\00:26:56.63 plus oral tablets, 00:26:56.66\00:26:58.12 she became a vegan vegetarian 00:26:58.15\00:27:00.14 over the course of about 45 days, 00:27:00.17\00:27:02.27 took her off all of her diabetic medications, 00:27:02.30\00:27:05.57 plus two of her three blood pressure medicines, 00:27:05.60\00:27:08.67 the claudication in her legs cleared up, 00:27:08.70\00:27:11.09 her heart grew new blood vessels. 00:27:11.12\00:27:13.37 She became a new woman, 00:27:13.40\00:27:14.44 she was able to go back to work. 00:27:14.47\00:27:15.88 All I can say is amen to that. 00:27:15.91\00:27:17.42 And I know you're saying amen too. 00:27:17.45\00:27:19.98 Thank you so much, doctor, for being with us today. 00:27:20.01\00:27:21.76 This has been great information. 00:27:21.79\00:27:23.37 I hope you'll take it to heart 00:27:23.40\00:27:25.06 and you'll make the changes necessary. 00:27:25.09\00:27:26.71 Live healthy. Thank you so much, doctor. 00:27:26.74\00:27:27.89 My pleasure. 00:27:27.92\00:27:28.95 May God bless you and God bless you. 00:27:28.98\00:27:30.84 Look, who doesn't love sugar? 00:27:36.50\00:27:40.09 I still love my sweets. 00:27:40.12\00:27:42.02 You don't believe me? 00:27:42.05\00:27:43.16 You try to take my cookie from me, you'll see. 00:27:43.19\00:27:46.44 All I'm saying is, in this show we have learned 00:27:46.47\00:27:48.86 that there are healthy alternatives, 00:27:48.89\00:27:51.06 healthier sugars that you can use. 00:27:51.09\00:27:53.11 White refined sugar is toxic to the system 00:27:53.14\00:27:55.73 and lead to lifestyle diseases like, 00:27:55.76\00:27:58.16 diabetes, cancer and heart disease so-- 00:27:58.19\00:28:00.80 Cut. Look, I've had enough. 00:28:00.83\00:28:03.84 I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. 00:28:03.87\00:28:06.52 Sugar is an amazing source of sickness. 00:28:06.55\00:28:10.10 Yeah. 00:28:10.13\00:28:11.16 It's because it tastes so good on everything. 00:28:11.19\00:28:15.09 So, you know what, good luck 00:28:15.12\00:28:16.80 getting people to stop using it. 00:28:16.83\00:28:19.18 Or guess what, we don't want to stop 00:28:19.21\00:28:21.25 anybody from enjoying their sweets. 00:28:21.28\00:28:23.00 That's why we began this program 00:28:23.03\00:28:24.26 with a biblical principle that states 00:28:24.29\00:28:26.78 that the honeycomb is sweet to the soul. 00:28:26.81\00:28:31.16 That's a sugar. Yeah, okay. 00:28:31.19\00:28:33.33 So you enjoy your sweets. 00:28:33.36\00:28:35.57 All we're saying is enjoy them in a healthier way. 00:28:35.60\00:28:39.77 That's our program today. 00:28:39.80\00:28:41.47 I'm Rico Hill, your host, and this is... 00:28:41.50\00:28:44.25 Sickness, the Blue Guy. 00:28:44.28\00:28:46.82 And as always, I'd like to just say to you, 00:28:46.85\00:28:49.34 3 john 2 says, "Beloved, I wish above all things 00:28:49.37\00:28:54.02 that thou mayest prosper and be in health." 00:28:54.05\00:28:56.35 Stay healthy.
