Proverbs chapter 3 verses 5 and 6 state: 00:00:03.16\00:00:06.50 "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart 00:00:06.70\00:00:09.30 and lean not unto thine own understanding. 00:00:09.50\00:00:11.81 In all thy ways acknowledge Him 00:00:12.01\00:00:14.08 and He will direct thy paths. " 00:00:14.28\00:00:16.44 Hello and welcome to the program. This is 00:00:16.64\00:00:19.18 From Sickness To Health. I'm your host Rico Hill 00:00:19.38\00:00:21.55 and this is the blue guy: Sickness himself. 00:00:21.75\00:00:24.79 And today, whoa, we have a fascinating program 00:00:25.09\00:00:29.49 for you, don't we? Yeah, I guess so. 00:00:29.69\00:00:31.93 You all right? I'm a little disappointed. 00:00:32.33\00:00:35.26 In me? The program? The topic? What? 00:00:35.66\00:00:38.57 No... my heart: it attacked me last night. 00:00:38.77\00:00:41.90 Out of nowhere... after all I've done for it. 00:00:42.10\00:00:44.94 You mean you had a heart attack? 00:00:45.67\00:00:47.28 NO... I did not have a heart attack. 00:00:47.48\00:00:50.25 My heart attacked ME! 00:00:50.45\00:00:52.25 Let me get this straight: your heart attacked you? 00:00:52.45\00:00:55.22 Yeah, can you believe it? No. I can't believe it. 00:00:55.42\00:00:57.69 Well there I was sitting on the couch 00:00:57.99\00:01:00.36 enjoying some delicious high-fat ice cream... 00:01:00.56\00:01:04.96 Anyway, out of nowhere, this sharp pain in my chest 00:01:05.56\00:01:09.96 like a knife. How would you like it 00:01:10.17\00:01:11.80 if someone put a knife in your chest? 00:01:12.00\00:01:14.20 Well I probably wouldn't like it but that's not the point. 00:01:14.40\00:01:16.50 The point is that your heart is just responding 00:01:16.71\00:01:19.04 to all the unhealthy foods you've been eating. 00:01:19.24\00:01:20.88 Unhealthy foods! I'm insulted! Name some. 00:01:21.08\00:01:23.95 Let's see: fried bacon, fried chicken, 00:01:24.15\00:01:26.08 fried fish, cupcakes, fried ice cream, 00:01:26.38\00:01:29.58 pizza, cheese pizza, meat-lovers pizza... 00:01:29.78\00:01:32.32 What else? No... no, no, no, no. 00:01:32.52\00:01:34.22 This isn't helping. Name some unhealthy foods. 00:01:34.42\00:01:36.49 Anyway, that's probably why your heart attacked you. 00:01:36.89\00:01:40.23 Yeah, that's right. My heart attacked ME! 00:01:40.53\00:01:42.90 Make the record straight: my heart attacked me. 00:01:43.10\00:01:46.50 Ungrateful heart. So you're mad at your heart? 00:01:46.70\00:01:49.50 Yes I'm mad at my heart. I am taking care of this thing. 00:01:49.70\00:01:53.07 Oh, are you mad at your mouth, too? 00:01:53.27\00:01:55.04 Maybe you should be mad at your hands for putting the food 00:01:55.44\00:01:58.51 in your mouth. Ha, ha, ha, ha. Hold on! Hold on! 00:01:58.71\00:02:01.35 I need a time to laugh at that joke. 00:02:01.65\00:02:03.59 This is NOT funny. OK... roll the program. 00:02:03.79\00:02:06.65 Look, today's topic is When Hearts Attack. 00:02:06.86\00:02:11.73 Hello? Heart attack hotline? 00:02:15.60\00:02:17.47 Yes. I'd like to report a vicious attack. 00:02:17.67\00:02:20.27 Roll it. Yeah, yeah, I can wait. 00:02:20.47\00:02:23.67 Well, thank you so much for joining us here in the studio 00:03:01.04\00:03:04.85 of From Sickness To Health. 00:03:05.05\00:03:07.15 Oh, I cannot tell you how how excited I am about today's 00:03:07.35\00:03:10.12 program! I'm joined by my good friend 00:03:10.32\00:03:13.25 Dr. Schubert Palmer who is the chairman of the Cardiology 00:03:13.46\00:03:16.46 section of the White Memorial Medical Center 00:03:16.66\00:03:20.13 in Los Angeles, California. 00:03:20.33\00:03:21.70 He's also the director of the catheterization laboratory 00:03:21.90\00:03:25.03 and the director of cardiac rehabilitation. 00:03:25.23\00:03:29.44 So he's very busy but he made time today 00:03:29.64\00:03:32.87 to come and be with us. So we thank you for being here 00:03:33.07\00:03:35.68 Dr. Palmer. Delighted to be here. 00:03:35.88\00:03:37.68 Ah, it's exciting, isn't it? Any time you are talking about 00:03:37.88\00:03:40.08 the heart I am excited. Exactly. Because you know 00:03:40.28\00:03:42.62 Dr. Palmer... this is a subject that he has committed his entire 00:03:42.82\00:03:46.65 life to. This is his life's work 00:03:46.86\00:03:48.69 and he is committed to making people healthy mentally, 00:03:48.89\00:03:52.26 physically, and spiritually. And there are a lot of 00:03:52.46\00:03:54.16 misconceptions, aren't there? about this subject 00:03:54.36\00:03:57.17 about what keeps us ticking, what slows us down, 00:03:57.37\00:04:00.17 or even stopping all together. But our friend Sickness 00:04:00.37\00:04:04.17 thinks that he has this whole heart thing figured out. 00:04:04.37\00:04:06.84 So let's take a look and see what he has to say. 00:04:07.04\00:04:09.11 Thank you Rico. Hey, did you know that cardiac arrest 00:04:11.41\00:04:14.85 and heart attacks are the leading cause of death 00:04:15.05\00:04:17.72 in the United States this year? 00:04:17.92\00:04:19.45 Mmm. That's one in four people 00:04:19.65\00:04:22.16 that's going to die of cardiac arrest. 00:04:22.36\00:04:24.56 Wow... big business! 00:04:24.96\00:04:27.60 Take this guy for example. I mean, look at him. 00:04:27.90\00:04:30.80 Fatty foods. Lack of exercise. 00:04:31.10\00:04:35.00 Sugary drinks. Watching TV all day. 00:04:35.20\00:04:39.07 Late night eating. He's just 35 years old. 00:04:39.37\00:04:42.88 But little does he know that age is nothing but a number. 00:04:43.28\00:04:46.65 Boy, he has no idea what's going to hit him. 00:04:47.05\00:04:50.09 Hey buddy! Want me to order an- other medium extra-cheese pizza? 00:04:51.12\00:04:55.56 I'm paying. Hey, sure. All right. 00:04:55.76\00:04:59.26 He thinks I'm paying but in the long run 00:04:59.66\00:05:02.50 he'll be the one paying. 00:05:02.70\00:05:04.33 Back to you, Rico. 00:05:04.53\00:05:06.40 Wow! Well I tell you what: I don't know if he has it 00:05:11.44\00:05:14.18 figured out or if he's causing a problem, 00:05:14.38\00:05:15.94 but today we're talking about - as Sickness put it - 00:05:16.14\00:05:19.15 his heart attacked him. And many people have 00:05:19.35\00:05:21.78 this misconception that somehow a heart attack 00:05:21.98\00:05:25.25 is like your heart attacking YOU. 00:05:25.45\00:05:27.89 But we're going to kind of show in this program today 00:05:28.09\00:05:30.76 that oftentimes we're attacking our heart, aren't we? 00:05:30.96\00:05:34.06 We surely... certainly are. OK. 00:05:34.26\00:05:36.33 Well... And the thing that's so exciting about today's program 00:05:36.53\00:05:39.00 Dr. Palmer is that you brought some props for us. 00:05:39.20\00:05:42.00 So let's start with the basics. 00:05:42.30\00:05:44.04 Let's start at your heart. The heart's the size of a fist 00:05:45.11\00:05:48.71 basically. And you remember this is going to keep pumping. 00:05:48.91\00:05:52.95 By the time you are 70 years of age it will have beaten 00:05:53.15\00:05:56.82 at least 2 billion times. Wow! If you look very closely, 00:05:57.02\00:06:01.72 you will notice that there are these big arteries we call the 00:06:01.92\00:06:05.49 aorta and the pulmonary artery. 00:06:05.69\00:06:07.86 And on the outside you have these little bitsy things. 00:06:08.06\00:06:12.27 That's the coronary artery. The red ones are the arteries; 00:06:12.47\00:06:15.77 the blue is the veins. 00:06:15.97\00:06:17.31 We are concerned about the arteries. 00:06:17.34\00:06:19.04 And you have 3 main arteries. You have one that's on the... 00:06:19.24\00:06:22.41 on the left side that comes down the front. 00:06:22.61\00:06:25.15 The other one that services the back. 00:06:25.35\00:06:27.18 They actually start out together, and once you get a 00:06:27.38\00:06:30.42 blockage in that area you call it a widow-maker. 00:06:30.62\00:06:32.92 And then you have the artery on the right side that's called 00:06:33.12\00:06:35.86 the right coronary artery. 00:06:36.06\00:06:37.49 So whenever an artery gets clogged up with cholesterol 00:06:37.69\00:06:40.73 or fats, then all of the muscle that's depending on that blood 00:06:40.93\00:06:46.10 supply doesn't have it and so you have a heart attack. 00:06:46.30\00:06:50.97 Inside the heart if you look inside 00:06:51.17\00:06:53.81 those are the muscles, and they're beating their hearts off 00:06:54.01\00:06:57.25 no pun intended. 00:06:57.45\00:06:58.85 But they can only work as the circulation is good to them. 00:06:59.25\00:07:03.59 They can't get the blood directly. 00:07:03.79\00:07:05.65 Now alligators... they're different. 00:07:05.85\00:07:07.86 They have sinusoids, and they get the blood directly. 00:07:08.06\00:07:11.29 But we're not alligators. We need to get the blood from 00:07:11.49\00:07:14.73 the coronary arteries. And if they stay open, 00:07:14.93\00:07:18.33 perfect circulation gives you perfect health. Perfect health. 00:07:18.53\00:07:22.24 Wow! That is a beautiful demonstration. 00:07:22.64\00:07:24.81 So we've seen here clearly how the heart functions. 00:07:25.01\00:07:28.78 And that's how we want it to function. 00:07:29.18\00:07:30.81 And if we don't have it functioning at its capacity, 00:07:31.01\00:07:34.42 we're going to have some problems, aren't we? 00:07:34.62\00:07:36.18 We are. And unfortunately we are suffering a big epidemic. 00:07:36.38\00:07:39.35 It you were to take - again - this coronary artery 00:07:39.55\00:07:42.99 and blow it up to a big size, 00:07:43.19\00:07:45.36 and I have a little model here. Like here is an example 00:07:45.56\00:07:47.96 of what the coronary arteries are supposed to be: 00:07:48.16\00:07:50.33 nice and clean. What we are finding out now 00:07:50.53\00:07:53.80 from autopsies from young people who have died in the wars - 00:07:54.00\00:07:56.74 you know, the different wars we've had - 00:07:56.94\00:07:58.71 is that their arteries even at a young age 00:07:58.91\00:08:01.44 15, 16, to 20... they've started the process of plaque build-up. 00:08:01.64\00:08:05.75 A little yellow there. And it gets worse and worse. 00:08:05.95\00:08:09.08 And what's happening now is this build-up of plaque 00:08:09.28\00:08:12.75 or blockages we're seeing at an age where we... 00:08:12.95\00:08:18.46 you'd have to be 70 years of age. 00:08:18.66\00:08:20.80 Now we're seeing that disease process in 20-year-olds 00:08:21.06\00:08:24.80 so the arteries are looking like this. 00:08:25.00\00:08:27.14 Whoa! In fact... That's almost closed. 00:08:27.54\00:08:30.64 It is! And 40-year-old folk, they're running around 00:08:30.84\00:08:34.94 an average of maybe in the neighborhood of 00:08:35.14\00:08:36.85 40 to 50% blockages and they don't even know it. 00:08:37.05\00:08:39.45 And it's gotten so bad that in young people... 00:08:39.85\00:08:44.75 Now this is kind of scary, but a friend of mine who works 00:08:44.95\00:08:48.92 with the public school system 00:08:49.12\00:08:50.96 they're having young people - boys - 16, 17, 18-year-old 00:08:51.16\00:08:56.67 boys - and the #1 drug that they're asking 00:08:56.87\00:09:00.50 the health prescribers to give them is 00:09:00.70\00:09:05.01 medicines like Viagra. 00:09:05.21\00:09:08.11 Viagra. So there is a problem 00:09:08.31\00:09:11.35 with circulation, isn't there? It is scary 00:09:11.55\00:09:14.32 because 16-year-old boys should never have problems with 00:09:14.52\00:09:17.79 circulation. There are some serious moral and ethical issues 00:09:17.99\00:09:21.16 involved. But when you consider besides those issues 00:09:21.36\00:09:25.39 why a 16-year-old boy would even be asking 00:09:25.59\00:09:28.56 for anything like that, this is the problem. 00:09:28.76\00:09:31.17 The diet that we as parents have given our children 00:09:31.47\00:09:35.34 now is leading to a society in which parents are burying 00:09:35.64\00:09:40.51 their children. Oh, how sad... how sad. 00:09:40.71\00:09:43.31 You know what? There is a video clip that we're going to 00:09:43.51\00:09:46.38 take a look at that illustrates this point. 00:09:46.58\00:09:48.42 Let's turn to that and come back and continue to talk 00:09:48.72\00:09:50.92 about that. 00:09:51.12\00:09:52.45 Well the first sign that both of these cast members had 00:09:53.66\00:09:56.83 was shortness of breath. And you may not think that 00:09:57.03\00:09:58.63 that's a big deal... most folks look for chest pain. 00:09:58.83\00:10:00.96 But it turns out that about half the people who have a heart 00:10:01.16\00:10:03.10 attack never knew it was coming. 00:10:03.30\00:10:04.63 They never realized that subtle signs had been out there. 00:10:04.67\00:10:06.77 They were looking for the wrong signs. 00:10:06.97\00:10:08.34 Shortness of breath, the inability to walk up two flights 00:10:08.54\00:10:10.51 of stairs, or a sudden change in how breathless you get 00:10:10.71\00:10:13.27 doing normal activities. That's a situation that really 00:10:13.48\00:10:15.64 worries me. It's subtle but it's there, and it's a big 00:10:15.84\00:10:17.81 warning sign to everybody out there. 00:10:18.01\00:10:19.41 If you look like Mr. Gandolfini that's a warning sign as well. 00:10:19.95\00:10:23.35 Big weight that we have talked about together, appears 00:10:23.55\00:10:25.25 several times. A waist size that is more than half your height 00:10:25.45\00:10:28.22 is a warning sign because that increased girth 00:10:28.42\00:10:30.86 predisposes you to the risk factors for heart disease 00:10:31.06\00:10:33.03 which are high blood pressure - #1 cause of death 00:10:33.23\00:10:35.20 and risk factor for it - diabetes and high cholesterol. 00:10:35.40\00:10:39.23 And if you don't know whether you have a shortness 00:10:39.43\00:10:41.90 of breath or and you're not going to pay attention to your 00:10:42.14\00:10:43.67 waist size at least know those risk factors 00:10:43.87\00:10:45.84 because they are critical. And now the fourth sign 00:10:46.04\00:10:48.31 I'm going to tell you all is not something many would 00:10:48.51\00:10:49.88 think of, but it was probably important in Mr. Gandolfini's 00:10:50.08\00:10:53.21 case which is what you last ate 00:10:53.42\00:10:55.08 'cause often your last meal is truly the last meal. 00:10:55.28\00:10:57.95 Heart disease is a serious issue! 00:10:58.25\00:11:01.89 It's affecting so many Americans. 00:11:02.09\00:11:04.69 And just before we took a look at the video here 00:11:04.89\00:11:07.36 you were pointing out that it's affecting young people, 00:11:07.66\00:11:10.97 young boys - um-hmm - at an early age 00:11:11.17\00:11:14.67 due to what? 00:11:14.97\00:11:17.21 The lifestyle and particularly the diet 00:11:17.97\00:11:21.14 is the most important. 00:11:21.34\00:11:23.14 There are other issues that come into play... the exercise. 00:11:23.35\00:11:27.12 Most people are on their... playing video games 00:11:27.32\00:11:30.55 and things of that sort so they're not exercising. 00:11:30.75\00:11:32.75 So exercise is very important and maybe we will talk about it 00:11:32.95\00:11:35.89 in a little while, but relatively speaking 00:11:36.09\00:11:39.13 the major problem is the diet. 00:11:39.33\00:11:42.66 So as a heart surgeon you are finding that the diet is 00:11:42.86\00:11:47.17 contributing to heart disease and cardiac arrest? 00:11:47.37\00:11:51.97 Everyone who has looked at this subject seriously 00:11:52.37\00:11:55.84 down from the Surgeon General to William Castelli from the 00:11:56.04\00:12:01.08 Framingham Study and several others, all of the researchers, 00:12:01.28\00:12:04.45 same conclusion: 70% to 80% or more of the heart 00:12:04.65\00:12:09.02 problems we are having would cease to exist 00:12:09.22\00:12:12.73 if folks were having a reasonable diet. 00:12:12.93\00:12:16.20 So what's an unreasonable diet? 00:12:16.40\00:12:18.63 And what happens? What is this? You've got some props here. 00:12:18.83\00:12:20.90 That's very exciting to me. You've got some glob here. 00:12:21.10\00:12:23.54 What is this thing here? Well, this here is 5 pounds of fat. 00:12:23.84\00:12:29.78 Ooh! My, my. 00:12:29.98\00:12:33.28 This is so heavy. You mean to tell me 00:12:33.68\00:12:36.12 if someone has 5 pounds of fat in their body 00:12:36.32\00:12:39.82 it's as heavy as this? 00:12:40.02\00:12:41.36 How does someone get this in their body? 00:12:41.39\00:12:43.86 Please explain. 00:12:44.16\00:12:45.79 This all comes from what comes through here. 00:12:50.57\00:12:53.57 Whoa! The food we eat 00:12:54.70\00:12:56.97 coupled with the exercise we do not have 00:12:57.17\00:12:59.71 directly leads to this little issue here. 00:12:59.91\00:13:04.91 As we look at the obesity trends in America 00:13:05.31\00:13:10.59 we have found some very interesting things. 00:13:10.79\00:13:12.85 The map has just gradually lit up in terms of the percentage 00:13:13.05\00:13:17.59 of overweight and obese population. Um-hmm. 00:13:17.79\00:13:22.03 So much so that the average seat that we sit on now 00:13:22.23\00:13:25.63 is 22 inches wide. It used to be 100 years ago 00:13:25.83\00:13:29.84 17 inches. So... it went from 17 inches to 22. 00:13:30.04\00:13:34.44 To make accommodation for our increasing girth. 00:13:34.64\00:13:38.05 So people are getting bigger. It is. 00:13:38.25\00:13:40.68 And the most serious trend is that children - 00:13:40.88\00:13:44.09 the obesity rate in children - 00:13:44.29\00:13:47.39 is off the scale. Wow! Wow! So when we look at 00:13:47.59\00:13:53.03 fat... Let's make this real practical for people 00:13:53.23\00:13:56.13 because, you know, I was sharing with someone the other day 00:13:56.33\00:13:59.17 and I said: "You know you have to be careful of 00:13:59.37\00:14:01.24 processed foods. " And the person said: 00:14:01.44\00:14:03.61 "I don't even eat processed foods. " 00:14:03.81\00:14:05.77 And then I shared what a few processed foods were 00:14:05.97\00:14:08.68 and she ate all of them. 00:14:08.88\00:14:10.21 So sometimes people don't know what we're talking about 00:14:10.41\00:14:12.98 when we say fatty food. They'll say: "Well I don't eat 00:14:13.18\00:14:14.75 any fatty foods. " Let's get some examples 00:14:14.95\00:14:17.15 here of how we go from this 00:14:17.35\00:14:20.56 which goes in the mouth to this. 00:14:20.76\00:14:22.86 Take a look here. This is the amount of fat 00:14:23.16\00:14:27.63 that you see in one cup of skim milk. 00:14:27.83\00:14:30.97 Skim milk? Skim milk. 00:14:31.17\00:14:33.13 This is in one cup of whole milk. 00:14:33.34\00:14:36.50 This is almost full. Uh-huh. 00:14:36.81\00:14:40.81 Now skim milks tastes pretty nasty I must confess. 00:14:41.21\00:14:44.38 Yes. Personally. Yes. 00:14:44.58\00:14:45.91 I would much rather this, but there's even a better way! 00:14:46.41\00:14:49.98 And that is, as we talk about fats, we have the good, 00:14:50.19\00:14:53.46 the bad, and the ugly. 00:14:53.66\00:14:54.99 All right. And this is pretty much bad fat. OK. 00:14:55.86\00:14:59.43 Here is another example. This is a 3-ounce fish serving. 00:14:59.83\00:15:03.70 And here we have... this is 3 ounces chicken, roasted, 00:15:04.83\00:15:08.90 no skin. That's half-way full. 00:15:09.10\00:15:14.54 Half-way full... and that's the best part of the chicken. 00:15:14.74\00:15:18.05 So this is the best part of the chicken - yes - but 00:15:18.25\00:15:20.72 this is... the breast without the skin. Without the skin. 00:15:20.92\00:15:23.59 But this isn't going to affect my heart, is it? 00:15:23.79\00:15:25.45 Huh! It definitely does. 00:15:25.65\00:15:28.42 It gets even better. This is a regular potato chip. 00:15:28.62\00:15:32.16 Wait a minute. This is completely full 00:15:36.83\00:15:40.77 of fat and you're saying this is 12 to 20 chips? 00:15:40.97\00:15:46.61 One ounce? Um-hmm... um-hmm. 00:15:46.81\00:15:49.38 But people love their potato chips! 00:15:49.58\00:15:51.51 They sit on the couch, they watch the game and they eat 00:15:52.01\00:15:54.38 bowls and bowls of them. And they dip them in something 00:15:54.58\00:15:57.12 that also has fat! 00:15:57.32\00:15:59.29 Well, as I tell my patients 00:16:00.79\00:16:03.89 "You enjoy this kind of food? " 00:16:04.09\00:16:06.46 I said: "You know, it's bad for you but it's good for me. " 00:16:06.66\00:16:11.30 As a heart surgeon. Here we go with a... 00:16:11.50\00:16:14.80 this is the small size of French fries. 00:16:15.00\00:16:17.61 That's the amount of fat in a small serving of French fries. 00:16:19.17\00:16:22.28 Hold on... This is mind-blowing to me. 00:16:22.68\00:16:24.91 This is a small serving of French fries? Um-hmm. 00:16:25.11\00:16:28.45 We're not talking about like when they are extra super sized 00:16:28.65\00:16:33.62 in some way. This is the smallest version 00:16:33.82\00:16:35.69 and it fills up a complete test tube right there. 00:16:35.89\00:16:38.96 But I want to make sure that we understand this 'cause 00:16:39.36\00:16:41.90 you know, someone says: "Well that's a small test tube 00:16:42.10\00:16:44.20 of fat. How can this be a bad thing? " 00:16:44.40\00:16:46.67 But you're saying it is! It is... because that has to go 00:16:46.87\00:16:50.21 somewhere. And as you study the circulation 00:16:50.41\00:16:52.84 we find out that they land up 00:16:53.04\00:16:54.64 in the process - of course they through the liver 00:16:54.94\00:16:57.28 and then from there on - but it lands up many times 00:16:57.48\00:17:00.82 in these arteries... the cholesterol and the fat 00:17:01.02\00:17:06.22 land up somewhere. So when you're going in as a surgeon 00:17:07.29\00:17:11.33 and you're looking... Now most people have never looked 00:17:11.53\00:17:14.06 inside of a heart. You do it every day 00:17:14.26\00:17:17.07 all day all the time. Yes? 00:17:17.27\00:17:19.03 We do. And what you're saying is the stuff we don't think 00:17:19.23\00:17:22.30 is actually going anywhere except into our stomach 00:17:22.50\00:17:24.74 is ending up in our hearts and it's causing major major 00:17:24.94\00:17:28.88 problems? You are what you eat. 00:17:29.08\00:17:30.75 Garbage in... garbage out. 00:17:31.05\00:17:33.65 Mercy. Quality in... quality out. 00:17:33.85\00:17:36.25 Take a look at this one. This is for one hot dog. 00:17:36.45\00:17:39.15 What kind of a hot dog? 00:17:39.55\00:17:41.76 A dead dog. 00:17:42.36\00:17:43.83 A dead dog... hot dog. 00:17:45.99\00:17:47.83 OK. And here is my favorite... here's my favorite. 00:17:48.13\00:17:50.63 This one's coming out the thing. Yeah. 00:17:50.83\00:17:52.50 How about the quarter-pound cheeseburger? 00:17:52.70\00:17:55.74 A quarter-pounder of cheeseburger. 00:17:56.14\00:17:59.01 Here is the fat in a quarter-pounder cheeseburger. 00:17:59.21\00:18:02.68 I'm going to need your help. Help me there. 00:18:02.88\00:18:04.45 OK. And that and that and that. 00:18:04.65\00:18:09.08 I'm sorry. You mean one of these is? All three. 00:18:09.28\00:18:11.95 This is three quarter pounds of cheese? One serving. 00:18:12.15\00:18:15.52 This is one serving? Quarter-pound cheeseburger. 00:18:15.72\00:18:18.29 You know what? I'm going to hold these right here. 00:18:18.49\00:18:20.23 Let's... 'cause there are a lot of people on the streets... 00:18:20.43\00:18:22.70 There are a lot of people on the street 00:18:22.90\00:18:25.10 who are actually eating this and they don't know 00:18:25.30\00:18:28.87 what we're talking about. So let's go hear from them 00:18:29.07\00:18:31.71 and come back and finish the discussion. 00:18:31.91\00:18:33.48 Let's take a listen. 00:18:33.68\00:18:35.01 Right now this whole epidemic of attacks of the heart 00:18:36.38\00:18:39.61 around the country is taking place. 00:18:39.81\00:18:41.62 What do you think is causing these heart attacks? 00:18:41.82\00:18:44.99 Well people are under a lot of stress. 00:18:45.29\00:18:48.19 Well it's certainly not the food, right? 'Cause there are 00:18:48.39\00:18:49.86 some health nuts out there trying to convince people 00:18:50.06\00:18:52.39 it's the food. Well, in combination with the stress. 00:18:52.59\00:18:55.83 Well what kind of food are we going to throw under the bus 00:18:56.03\00:18:58.10 with stress that causes these heart attacks? 00:18:58.30\00:19:01.37 Pork is #1. Pork? Why would you do this to me? 00:19:01.57\00:19:04.31 I thought we were friends. I thought we were too 00:19:04.51\00:19:06.64 I mean it's your stress... Friends differ. 00:19:06.84\00:19:08.88 Friends differ in many instances, yes. 00:19:09.08\00:19:11.81 Some friends do differ. What do you think causes heart attacks? 00:19:12.01\00:19:15.25 Stress; high blood pressure. 00:19:15.65\00:19:19.05 Why put all the guilt on stress and high blood pressure? 00:19:19.45\00:19:22.59 Obesity. Obesity! Oh man, you're starting to sound like 00:19:22.79\00:19:26.63 my friend Rico. What do you think 00:19:26.83\00:19:28.93 is causing these heart attacks? 00:19:29.13\00:19:30.93 Fatty foods. I'd say lack of exercise. 00:19:31.23\00:19:34.54 Something I learned recently. Oh. You exercise? 00:19:34.74\00:19:38.07 Outside of work? No. Yeah, don't waste your time. 00:19:38.47\00:19:41.84 I ride my bike casually, man, maybe about 4-5 times a month. 00:19:42.04\00:19:45.28 Just run your fingers across the desk. That's about 00:19:45.48\00:19:47.18 all the exercise I encourage people to get. 00:19:47.38\00:19:49.22 You do? Ah yeah man, don't exercise. You're Sickness. 00:19:49.62\00:19:52.82 Yeah that's right. I'm SICKNESS! 00:19:53.02\00:19:55.09 I'm already super famous out here in Hollywood. 00:19:55.29\00:19:57.83 You know if you take aspirin you can get all that every day. 00:19:58.03\00:19:59.89 Every day? I heard it's good for your heart. 00:20:00.10\00:20:03.30 Oh yeah, it's good for your heart. Aspirin is fantastic. 00:20:03.50\00:20:06.13 So I won't get a heart attack 'cause I'm within that 00:20:06.33\00:20:07.97 demographic of people who get those. Heart attack? 00:20:08.17\00:20:10.37 Yeah. She's acting like she doesn't like heart attacks. 00:20:10.57\00:20:14.74 People my age are tipping over every day. 00:20:14.94\00:20:17.31 Like what? What? Isn't that great? 00:20:17.51\00:20:20.62 You heard them Rico. They don't want heart attacks 00:20:20.92\00:20:24.19 but they love them there fried foods. 00:20:24.35\00:20:27.02 Finger lickin' mouth watering artery cloggin' 00:20:27.22\00:20:31.29 fried foods. 00:20:31.49\00:20:33.40 Steak, chicken, French fries. People are eating everything 00:20:33.60\00:20:38.70 but they don't have a clue that they're really 00:20:38.90\00:20:42.37 setting themselves up to visit someone like you, 00:20:42.57\00:20:45.37 aren't they? No they don't. 00:20:45.57\00:20:47.68 What are the numbers? What are the numbers like on this? 00:20:47.88\00:20:49.51 Every 30 seconds in this country somebody dies from 00:20:49.71\00:20:52.61 a cardiovascular disease. That works out to a person dying 00:20:52.81\00:20:57.19 from heart attacks, high blood pressure-related symptoms 00:20:57.39\00:21:00.86 and so on every 30 seconds. 00:21:01.02\00:21:03.49 Heart attacks works out to every minute. 00:21:03.69\00:21:05.93 Every minute somebody is drop- ping dead from a heart attack. 00:21:06.13\00:21:08.53 Up to forty percent of folks that get these heart attacks 00:21:08.93\00:21:13.23 are dead within an hour. 00:21:13.44\00:21:15.00 And for at least half of them their very first symptom 00:21:15.20\00:21:18.17 of having heart trouble is sudden death. 00:21:18.37\00:21:20.91 So the symptom itself is... is death. Death. 00:21:21.31\00:21:25.75 You're done. It's kind of late. 00:21:25.95\00:21:27.62 It's a little late in the game for that, isn't it? Yes. 00:21:27.82\00:21:29.55 And they looked at some of these folks who had sudden death 00:21:29.75\00:21:32.85 and they found out that between - one study - 00:21:33.12\00:21:36.32 between 20% and 40% of 00:21:36.52\00:21:39.83 them had seen a doctor the previous week 00:21:40.03\00:21:42.80 and had been declared that they were in good health. 00:21:43.00\00:21:45.23 Oh, that's criminal! 00:21:45.53\00:21:47.14 It's not the fault of the doctor. 00:21:47.34\00:21:48.90 It's the nature of the disease atherosclerosis. Aah. 00:21:49.10\00:21:54.11 So it's actually a crime against yourself 00:21:54.51\00:21:56.88 that is perpetrated even before you've gotten to the doctor. 00:21:57.08\00:22:00.25 It is definitely... absolutely. 00:22:00.45\00:22:03.18 And so what's happening now is that you have this disease 00:22:03.39\00:22:06.72 and some can call it the silent killer 00:22:06.92\00:22:08.86 that we invite to our home for dinner every day 00:22:09.06\00:22:12.29 and silently it does its job. 00:22:12.49\00:22:15.80 These arteries keep getting clogged more and more with 00:22:16.00\00:22:19.63 cholesterol, and most of the heart attacks we have are not 00:22:19.83\00:22:23.57 even the arteries that are 90% closed. 00:22:23.77\00:22:26.61 They are the ones that are maybe 50-ish percent 00:22:26.81\00:22:29.14 but they have an unstable plaque that ruptures. 00:22:29.34\00:22:32.88 OK. So you've got something here 00:22:33.18\00:22:35.15 that once you've started that huge thing of fat that we have 00:22:35.45\00:22:39.42 here - um-hmm - and you've got that in the body 00:22:39.62\00:22:41.59 and you're eating the foods that contribute to this - 00:22:41.79\00:22:43.79 um-hmm - and someone has a heart attack... 00:22:43.99\00:22:45.79 Now I know this very well because my mother actually had 00:22:45.99\00:22:48.50 triple bypass heart surgery. 00:22:48.70\00:22:50.73 And for many years, you know, she and others feel that it's... 00:22:50.93\00:22:54.04 it's a radical thing to change the diet 00:22:54.24\00:22:56.81 to a more plant-based diet 00:22:57.01\00:22:58.64 from eating fatty foods, fried foods. Um-hmm. 00:22:58.84\00:23:01.34 But it's really radical to actually have a bypass surgery 00:23:01.54\00:23:06.01 or this thing that you're about to demonstrate. 00:23:06.21\00:23:08.45 Running out of time, so I really want to see this. 00:23:08.65\00:23:09.98 OK, yes, so here it goes. So you've done all of the... 00:23:10.02\00:23:12.62 Now you could have had a heart attack and tried to do 00:23:12.92\00:23:15.22 everything right. It is possible, but the odds are 00:23:15.42\00:23:17.73 much much... in your favor if you tried to do the right thing. 00:23:17.93\00:23:21.76 Right. And again, the main enemy that we are looking at 00:23:21.96\00:23:26.07 is cholesterol. Cholesterol is like public enemy #1. 00:23:26.27\00:23:29.97 So if your food has cholesterol you have to be very careful. 00:23:30.27\00:23:33.21 So you... A salad has cholesterol? 00:23:33.41\00:23:35.14 My friend Hans Diehl said it correctly: 00:23:35.34\00:23:38.35 the only foods that have cholesterol are foods that have 00:23:38.55\00:23:40.92 a mother or a face. Flesh foods and fish. 00:23:41.12\00:23:45.42 Beef, pork. And many people don't every recognize that 00:23:45.62\00:23:48.69 food like chicken has as much cholesterol as beef. 00:23:48.89\00:23:52.39 So it has less fat but it has the same amount of cholesterol. 00:23:52.59\00:23:55.46 So... you come into my office 00:23:55.66\00:23:57.77 and now... Not office... you come into the emergency room 00:23:57.97\00:24:00.44 and you're having a sudden heart attack. 00:24:00.64\00:24:02.07 So we rush you to the cath lab. We have to do this 00:24:02.27\00:24:04.44 right away. So, we rush to the cath lab. 00:24:04.64\00:24:07.74 We get inside your artery. We do a procedure we call 00:24:07.94\00:24:11.55 an angioplasty. And I have here a catheter. 00:24:11.75\00:24:14.48 Now I'm going to need your help here, doctor. 00:24:14.68\00:24:16.48 Here I'm taking out the angio... Here we have 00:24:16.79\00:24:20.76 a picture of what a stent looks like. 00:24:20.96\00:24:23.93 Aah... look at that. And so we have to get this 00:24:24.13\00:24:28.93 stent positioned right across the blocked artery 00:24:29.13\00:24:33.07 wherever that is. And once we get it into position 00:24:33.27\00:24:36.34 then we go ahead and inflate and let's see what happens. 00:24:36.54\00:24:40.38 Just push that forward. Push really hard. 00:24:40.58\00:24:43.98 You have to go harder. 00:24:44.38\00:24:46.45 No forward. Keep pushing harder. 00:24:46.65\00:24:48.62 Oh... there. And keep holding it down. 00:24:50.62\00:24:54.92 Oh, OK. Let's try it again. All right. 00:24:55.12\00:24:56.49 And as we are doing this we have a very limited time 00:24:56.69\00:25:01.13 to open up that blocked artery. I don't want to kill anybody! 00:25:01.33\00:25:03.23 Let's get this done. Here we go. 00:25:03.43\00:25:05.07 Ready? Yes. Keep going. Keep holding it... keep holding 00:25:05.27\00:25:07.67 it down; keep holding it down; keep holding it down. 00:25:07.87\00:25:10.81 And you can see that there is a stent there that is trying to 00:25:11.01\00:25:14.28 squeeze itself open. Aah... look at that. 00:25:14.48\00:25:17.78 And if... he is working very hard over here. 00:25:17.98\00:25:23.52 All this work to try to keep somebody alive 00:25:23.72\00:25:25.49 for eating wrong? Mercy! 00:25:25.69\00:25:28.06 And that stent will open up and act as a scaffold 00:25:28.36\00:25:33.29 to keep the artery open. So now you need artificial help 00:25:33.50\00:25:36.97 to keep the artery open to keep you alive. 00:25:37.27\00:25:40.34 Well... you do what you have to do. 00:25:40.64\00:25:43.10 But as soon as I am finished with this I get off my mask 00:25:43.30\00:25:48.11 and everything, I go to the head of the table 00:25:48.31\00:25:49.64 and I'll tell the patient: "I've got good news and I've 00:25:49.81\00:25:51.51 got bad news. The good news is 00:25:51.71\00:25:54.52 the artery is open; we have restored circulation. 00:25:54.82\00:25:58.15 No more of your heart muscle is going to die than already 00:25:58.35\00:26:01.16 has... has died... and there's hope. That's the good news. 00:26:01.36\00:26:05.66 The bad news is I haven't cured anything. 00:26:05.96\00:26:09.40 The artery - the athero- sclerosis - is still a problem 00:26:09.70\00:26:13.54 and you are going to need to make a drastic change. " 00:26:13.74\00:26:16.94 And then I say: "The best surgical equipment 00:26:17.14\00:26:19.71 is not what I do. " But I brought along the very best 00:26:19.91\00:26:22.44 surgical equipment. Not the knife, 00:26:22.64\00:26:25.31 but it has to do with this. 00:26:25.61\00:26:28.48 If you can use this... This is my surgical equipment 00:26:28.88\00:26:32.45 that I recommend. And if you know how to operate 00:26:32.65\00:26:35.19 in your kitchen I will not have to operate on you 00:26:35.39\00:26:38.73 in mine. " Well said! Did you hear that? 00:26:38.93\00:26:43.30 It comes down to two instruments of surgery. 00:26:43.70\00:26:47.34 What you have and I have and everyone has 00:26:47.84\00:26:50.67 and we use it every day: a fork and a knife. 00:26:50.87\00:26:54.44 It really comes down to choice, doesn't it? 00:26:54.84\00:26:56.85 It's all a matter of choice. It's a matter of choice. 00:26:57.25\00:26:59.41 We'll continue this. Tune into our program where we 00:26:59.98\00:27:02.22 share with you the things that you can do 00:27:02.42\00:27:04.69 to live a heart-healthy life 00:27:04.89\00:27:07.12 and you don't have to go under the knife. 00:27:07.32\00:27:09.32 I would prefer this knife over your knife any day. 00:27:09.52\00:27:14.23 Until next time. " 00:28:11.85\00:28:15.06 Friends, we ought to care for our bodies: 00:28:15.36\00:28:17.99 what we put in them and what we do with them. 00:28:18.19\00:28:20.03 Cardiac arrest is a very serious matter affecting the lives 00:28:20.23\00:28:24.27 of millions of Americans and their families. 00:28:24.47\00:28:27.00 With simple lifestyle changes we can reverse this 00:28:27.40\00:28:31.01 and live a longer, happier, more fulfilling life. 00:28:31.21\00:28:34.41 Well that's our program for today. 00:28:34.61\00:28:36.31 But I want to leave you with this: 00:28:36.71\00:28:38.18 Third John 2 says: "Beloved, I wish above all things 00:28:38.38\00:28:41.75 that thou mayest prosper and be in health.
