In John chapter 8 and verse 12 the Bible reads: 00:00:03.10\00:00:05.83 "Then spake Jesus unto them saying: 00:00:06.13\00:00:08.54 'I am the Light of the world. He that followeth Me 00:00:08.74\00:00:12.51 shall not walk in darkness 00:00:12.71\00:00:14.71 but shall have the light of life. ' " 00:00:14.91\00:00:17.85 Praise the Lord everyone and welcome to From Sickness 00:00:18.05\00:00:21.15 To Health. I'm your host Rico Hill 00:00:21.35\00:00:23.35 and this is my co-host, the blue guy, also known as 00:00:23.55\00:00:27.62 Sickness. Not time for all those. 00:00:27.82\00:00:29.26 Here... take these... quick. What is this? 00:00:29.46\00:00:31.09 It's sunglasses, sun block, and a hat. 00:00:31.29\00:00:33.26 Hurry... it's coming. Put them on. 00:00:33.46\00:00:34.76 Ah, it's coming, it's coming! What... what is coming? 00:00:35.06\00:00:38.23 The S-U-N. The sun is coming 00:00:38.43\00:00:40.97 and you're going to die of skin cancer. 00:00:41.17\00:00:43.94 So you're concerned that I'm going to get skin cancer. 00:00:44.14\00:00:46.07 You? No, not really. Look: I am scaring these people 00:00:46.27\00:00:49.01 to death. Play along please. 00:00:49.21\00:00:50.61 I'm not playing along because if you're trying to conceal 00:00:50.81\00:00:52.68 the fact that there are healing and health properties 00:00:52.88\00:00:55.25 in the sun then you know what? You've got the wrong guy. 00:00:55.45\00:00:58.02 Oh no! Rico, your brain is already fried! 00:00:58.22\00:01:00.86 You're not even making sense. I'M not making sense? 00:01:01.02\00:01:04.23 You're telling people that they need to be afraid of the sun 00:01:04.36\00:01:07.30 and not go outside and experience it 00:01:07.50\00:01:10.03 then guess what? I think something has happened 00:01:10.23\00:01:12.00 to YOUR brain. But we're going to tell you that there is 00:01:12.20\00:01:14.67 absolutely healing and health benefits 00:01:14.87\00:01:17.64 to the sun and you need not be afraid of it. 00:01:17.84\00:01:20.48 You don't have to be afraid of the sun. 00:01:20.78\00:01:23.71 Or do you? Roll it! 00:01:24.11\00:01:26.68 Hello and welcome to the program today. 00:02:00.22\00:02:02.88 This is From Sickness To Health and I am your host Rico Hill. 00:02:03.28\00:02:06.35 I thank you for joining us here in the studio. 00:02:06.76\00:02:08.99 Today we have a riveting program to share with you. 00:02:09.39\00:02:13.03 We're going to be talking about sunshine or sunlight. 00:02:13.33\00:02:16.33 A lot of misconceptions about this, a lot of myths. 00:02:16.63\00:02:19.20 And joining me here in the studio to talk about it 00:02:19.60\00:02:21.77 I have Dr. Schubert Palmer who is chair of the cardiology 00:02:21.97\00:02:25.41 department there at White Memorial Medical Center 00:02:25.61\00:02:29.91 in Los Angeles, California. 00:02:30.11\00:02:31.95 He is also an author. He is a minister of the gospel 00:02:32.35\00:02:36.28 so we're going to perfectly blend these things together 00:02:36.48\00:02:38.39 as we talk about health as it relates to sunshine. 00:02:38.59\00:02:41.72 But also joining us we have with us 00:02:41.92\00:02:43.99 a good friend, Namiko Madden, who is a health evangelist. 00:02:44.19\00:02:48.43 And he has some really insightful things 00:02:48.63\00:02:50.90 from scripture to share with us as well. 00:02:51.13\00:02:53.60 So... welcome to the program, gentlemen. 00:02:53.80\00:02:55.37 Thank you. Thank you very much. 00:02:55.57\00:02:56.94 Let's jump right in, shall we? All right, let's talk about 00:02:56.97\00:02:59.24 this: sunshine. People are afraid of the sun, yes? 00:02:59.44\00:03:04.15 Um-hmm. It's recommended by a lot of dermatologists. 00:03:04.35\00:03:07.62 Some doctors put on copious amounts of SPF something or 00:03:07.82\00:03:13.19 another to cover the skin. Yes? Yes... right. 00:03:13.39\00:03:16.19 Before we get into all the things that we can share - 00:03:16.59\00:03:19.16 the health benefits and some other facts about the sun - 00:03:19.36\00:03:21.40 let's give... we want to be fair and balanced... 00:03:21.80\00:03:24.47 let's give our friend Sickness an opportunity 00:03:24.67\00:03:27.54 to share some things... what he's found out. 00:03:27.74\00:03:29.84 Let's hear from him. 00:03:30.07\00:03:31.41 Thank you Rico. Aah... look at her. 00:03:32.94\00:03:36.91 Nice and cozy in the daytime because she worked all night. 00:03:37.31\00:03:40.42 I love people that work all night. 00:03:40.82\00:03:42.48 You know, those who work at night... 00:03:42.88\00:03:45.52 They call it the graveyard shift and there's a reason for that: 00:03:45.72\00:03:49.02 because it gets you to the grave that much quicker. 00:03:49.42\00:03:52.13 Those working all night and sleeping all day... they don't 00:03:53.60\00:03:55.83 experience the healing benefits of the sunshine. 00:03:56.03\00:03:58.63 And then when they do try and go into the sunshine 00:03:59.03\00:04:01.50 they take their sunglasses and their sunscreen 00:04:01.70\00:04:04.84 to, get this: block out the sun. 00:04:05.04\00:04:07.88 Sleep on, night owl! Sleep the day away. 00:04:08.94\00:04:11.91 Back to you Rico. 00:04:12.11\00:04:13.92 Well, so according to Sickness 00:04:14.85\00:04:16.99 I mean people are... you know... they're working at night 00:04:17.29\00:04:20.99 and they're sleeping during the day. They're not getting 00:04:21.39\00:04:23.12 the benefits that you were just starting to talk about. 00:04:23.32\00:04:25.79 So we want to... I think we should let those people know 00:04:25.99\00:04:29.30 that there are some things that they could really benefit from 00:04:29.50\00:04:32.00 by actually getting out in the sun. You were starting with 00:04:32.20\00:04:34.87 some of the things that have to do with the heart. 00:04:35.07\00:04:36.47 Can you continue that? Yes, some interesting research that's 00:04:36.67\00:04:39.27 just mind boggling - they're still trying to sort out - 00:04:39.47\00:04:42.31 is looking at some of the effects between say vitamin D 00:04:42.51\00:04:46.48 which we have talked how it ties in with the sun 00:04:46.68\00:04:49.02 and what it has to do with heart disease. 00:04:49.22\00:04:51.19 They have found that in the non-Hispanic white 00:04:51.39\00:04:54.56 and the Chinese population 00:04:54.76\00:04:56.93 if your vitamin D levels - which they generally have a 00:04:57.23\00:04:59.73 higher level... baseline - if their levels are very low, 00:04:59.96\00:05:04.40 their chances of getting heart disease or heart attacks 00:05:04.60\00:05:07.24 are off the chart. Interestingly, it's not the same 00:05:07.44\00:05:10.31 with blacks and Hispanics whose levels are typically low 00:05:10.51\00:05:14.31 to begin with. Um-hmm. So there is a lot of information 00:05:14.51\00:05:17.15 that's coming out now about vitamin D and it's relationship 00:05:17.35\00:05:20.82 to heart disease and a host of other things. 00:05:21.02\00:05:23.12 Congestive heart failure. Again, on my street. 00:05:23.72\00:05:26.29 There is a direct link, and we're not quite sure 00:05:27.36\00:05:29.89 how the link all works... but there is a very definite link. 00:05:30.13\00:05:33.63 A link. Those who spend more time in the sun 00:05:33.83\00:05:36.00 have better heart health. Is that what you're saying? 00:05:36.20\00:05:38.87 That's what would be you would translate to, yes. 00:05:39.07\00:05:41.40 Excellent... continue. Now whenever you talk about 00:05:41.60\00:05:44.81 sunlight you have to talk about vitamin D. 00:05:45.01\00:05:48.18 It's like one of the most important elements. 00:05:48.38\00:05:51.01 And vitamin D, it's kind of interesting how you can make it. 00:05:51.21\00:05:54.88 It is... The body makes it. 00:05:55.18\00:05:57.62 It needs cholesterol. Oh wait a minute. So it doesn't 00:05:57.82\00:05:59.79 come from the sun? Because you always hear people 00:06:00.09\00:06:01.56 if we had an in-studio audience if I were to have them raise 00:06:01.76\00:06:06.13 their hand and say "How many of you believe 00:06:06.33\00:06:08.33 vitamin D comes directly from the sun? " 00:06:08.53\00:06:10.67 I believe more than half would say: "Yes, it comes from 00:06:10.87\00:06:13.84 the sun. " But it doesn't actually come from the sun. 00:06:14.04\00:06:16.81 There is a process that takes place by being 00:06:17.11\00:06:19.31 exposed to the sun. Talk about that as you go on. 00:06:19.51\00:06:21.11 Right under your skin as the sunlight hits the cholesterol 00:06:21.31\00:06:24.98 that is there, it gets converted to - by a process - 00:06:25.18\00:06:28.98 ultimately to vitamin D. 00:06:29.18\00:06:30.72 Vitamin D is a hormone essential for a host of things. 00:06:31.12\00:06:35.82 It slows down the growth of tumor cells for example. Oh wow! 00:06:36.02\00:06:41.10 And we will talk about the interesting correlation 00:06:41.30\00:06:44.37 between countries, or even here in the US where we are filming, 00:06:44.57\00:06:48.57 where there is the winter belt season 00:06:48.77\00:06:52.57 you can see colon cancer is off the chart. 00:06:52.77\00:06:55.38 Winter belt season? What is that exactly? 00:06:55.58\00:06:57.31 Well maybe I made up the word winter belt... but coming from 00:06:57.68\00:07:01.52 California, you know, the rest of the country is winter. 00:07:01.72\00:07:04.02 Amen, brother. So anyway when you look at 00:07:06.35\00:07:10.36 Michigan and going across where you have long winters - yes - 00:07:10.56\00:07:13.93 you can find a direct correlation with the rate of 00:07:14.10\00:07:17.00 colon cancer and a host of other cancers. 00:07:17.20\00:07:19.60 So researchers started to figure out: "Well, 00:07:19.80\00:07:21.84 what could be happening? " And it was obvious 00:07:22.04\00:07:24.64 you know. As they traced the path 00:07:24.84\00:07:28.88 they found that the vitamin D itself... 00:07:29.08\00:07:31.55 This kind of led to this research that has now 00:07:31.75\00:07:34.05 tied vitamin D to cancer prevention if you will. 00:07:34.25\00:07:38.89 Wow! And you know what? It's interesting that you should 00:07:39.09\00:07:42.12 say that because in just a few moments 00:07:42.32\00:07:44.23 we're actually going to show a newsclip that shows 00:07:44.43\00:07:48.00 the value of sunlight and vitamin D in fighting cancer. 00:07:48.20\00:07:52.53 But before that, we want to continue the discussion 00:07:52.73\00:07:55.17 and I want to bring Nwamiko into the conversation. 00:07:55.37\00:07:57.64 There are some facts about sunlight and sunshine. 00:07:58.04\00:08:02.91 Can you share some of those with us? 00:08:03.11\00:08:04.91 Right. I did some research on sunlight because I was preparing 00:08:05.11\00:08:08.58 a presentation. And one of the most amazing things 00:08:08.78\00:08:11.52 that we in science... or I shouldn't say we 'cause 00:08:11.72\00:08:14.09 I'm not really a scientist... but science doesn't completely 00:08:14.29\00:08:16.66 understand what light is. I mean, when you think about it 00:08:16.86\00:08:19.23 it's like it can make plants grow 00:08:19.43\00:08:21.70 and it can kill bacteria. Wow! 00:08:21.90\00:08:24.17 It can blind you but it's also what allows us to see. 00:08:24.37\00:08:26.94 And recently one of the things that they discovered 00:08:27.14\00:08:29.37 is that the wavelengths of light are actually - 00:08:29.57\00:08:32.01 and this is not the heat... the actual light - 00:08:32.21\00:08:34.11 will energize your mitochondria. 00:08:34.31\00:08:35.88 So your mitochondria are the cells, excuse me, 00:08:36.44\00:08:39.51 the battery... the powering engine for your cells, you know. 00:08:39.71\00:08:42.38 So light energizes your mitochondria. 00:08:42.58\00:08:44.29 Which helps us to do what? 00:08:44.42\00:08:45.79 Well it helps your body cells to operate. OK. 00:08:46.19\00:08:48.96 Your body is made up of the cells that it has 00:08:49.16\00:08:51.56 and the cells are all doing different things. 00:08:51.76\00:08:53.43 And when you have more energy when the cells have more energy 00:08:53.63\00:08:56.50 it gets better function. So I was preparing a presentation 00:08:56.73\00:09:00.50 because I wanted to know where the cancer rates were the lowest 00:09:00.70\00:09:04.74 across the board in the United States. 00:09:04.94\00:09:06.91 And you might be interested to know because this is your 00:09:07.31\00:09:10.61 home state - oh, OK - but the state of Arizona 00:09:10.81\00:09:14.15 across the board actually has the lowest rate of cancer. 00:09:14.35\00:09:17.15 Wait a minute; wait a minute; wait a minute. 00:09:17.35\00:09:18.82 This is confusing everybody because everyone's been 00:09:19.02\00:09:21.19 told that if you're getting too much sunlight 00:09:21.39\00:09:23.86 or sunshine and if you're in a state where there's a lot 00:09:24.06\00:09:26.83 of it, there's gotta be a higher incidence of skin cancer, right? 00:09:27.03\00:09:31.97 But hold on... hold that thought. OK. 00:09:32.17\00:09:33.54 Let's see what the news is saying, and then we'll come back 00:09:33.64\00:09:36.27 and we'll pick it up there, all right? OK. 00:09:36.47\00:09:37.81 So let's take a look. 00:09:37.84\00:09:39.17 We've known for many years that a lack of vitamins 00:09:40.24\00:09:42.68 can lead to sickness, but now an eye-opening study 00:09:42.88\00:09:45.95 is linking vitamin D and cancer in a way 00:09:46.15\00:09:48.72 we've never seen before. Morning anchor Anita Bland 00:09:48.92\00:09:51.15 explains why the common nutrient has never had so much 00:09:51.35\00:09:53.66 potential. It's NEW AT 6. 00:09:53.86\00:09:55.76 The studies just keep coming; the evidence mounting. 00:09:55.96\00:09:59.73 Low levels of vitamin D are now linked to so many 00:09:59.93\00:10:02.70 illnesses from breast, colon, and prostate cancer, 00:10:02.90\00:10:06.43 type I diabetes and asthma, 00:10:06.74\00:10:08.80 to multiple sclerosis and heart disease. 00:10:09.00\00:10:11.41 I even think of vitamin D as the fountain of youth 00:10:11.71\00:10:15.01 if you will in that it allows us to age well. 00:10:15.21\00:10:18.91 That's the hope, and nowhere is the evidence more compelling 00:10:19.11\00:10:22.42 than here in this laboratory completely devoted 00:10:22.62\00:10:25.25 to research on vitamin D. 00:10:25.45\00:10:27.42 Take a look at this flask. These are human breast cancer cells 00:10:27.62\00:10:31.03 taken from a woman who had breast cancer. 00:10:31.23\00:10:33.40 Now watch what happens when you add a potent form of vitamin D. 00:10:33.80\00:10:37.00 They appear to just shrivel up and die. 00:10:37.30\00:10:39.80 The longer they are treated with vitamin D the more of an 00:10:40.00\00:10:42.10 affect we see. What happens is that vitamin D enters the cells 00:10:42.30\00:10:45.47 and it triggers the cell death process. 00:10:45.67\00:10:48.98 It's similar to what we see when we treat cells with 00:10:49.18\00:10:51.18 tamoxifen: a drug used to treat breast cancer now. 00:10:51.38\00:10:54.25 And when researchers took human breast cancer cells 00:10:54.52\00:10:57.35 and injected them into mice, well the tumors in those mice 00:10:57.55\00:11:00.76 given vitamin D drastically decreased or disappeared. 00:11:00.96\00:11:04.69 Whoa... I am blown away! 00:11:04.99\00:11:09.36 You mean to tell me? Did you hear that? 00:11:09.56\00:11:11.27 The longer someone is treated with vitamin D 00:11:11.57\00:11:14.84 the less chance the cancer has to stand against it. 00:11:15.24\00:11:19.47 Um-hmm. That's amazing! Yes it is! 00:11:19.67\00:11:21.41 So why are we so afraid of the sun? 00:11:21.61\00:11:24.21 And even more spectacular in my mind is 20 min. of sunshine 00:11:24.38\00:11:30.05 talking about the vitamin D that an average person would get 00:11:30.25\00:11:33.15 that would be the... to get that amount from eggs 00:11:33.36\00:11:36.12 you'd have to eat 100 eggs. 00:11:36.32\00:11:37.86 Hmm. Sounded like you said 100 eggs. 00:11:38.06\00:11:39.79 Oh yes. Well you know it's interesting. They measure 00:11:40.00\00:11:43.10 the amount of sunlight or vitamin D in international 00:11:43.30\00:11:46.37 units, is that right? Um-hmm. And I've seen that 00:11:46.57\00:11:50.54 when you just get that 15 to 20 minutes 00:11:50.74\00:11:52.94 of sunlight it's like 10,000 international units. Right. 00:11:53.14\00:11:57.71 And I think with supplementation you can really only kind of get 00:11:57.91\00:12:01.62 about 2,000 to 5,000 in a dosage. Is that right? 00:12:01.82\00:12:05.69 Well they can sometimes make mega-doses... 00:12:05.89\00:12:07.86 You can make mega doses? But then again, you have 00:12:08.06\00:12:09.56 to be careful. 00:12:09.76\00:12:11.09 Oh, what's the... What's the cautionary tale there? 00:12:11.13\00:12:13.80 You can have too much of a good thing. 00:12:14.20\00:12:16.63 Better to get is from the source and get it in the time that 00:12:17.77\00:12:20.20 you need to get it. And I would say also: get it for free 00:12:20.40\00:12:23.51 because sunlight is free and you don't have to pay for it. 00:12:23.91\00:12:27.04 You know what? Whereas when you contrast with the vitamin 00:12:27.24\00:12:30.15 that you have to pay for you understand you just 00:12:30.35\00:12:33.21 definitely want to be easy on the wallet. 00:12:33.42\00:12:35.22 But what's really interesting, tying it with what we were 00:12:35.42\00:12:37.45 saying before, is that your home state of Arizona 00:12:37.62\00:12:39.95 is the state which has the lowest rates of cancer 00:12:40.16\00:12:42.69 according to the CDC, right? Uh-huh. 00:12:42.89\00:12:44.59 But I thought about that and I was like: "That's interesting. 00:12:44.79\00:12:46.19 I wonder why. " And I did some more research 00:12:46.39\00:12:47.93 and I found out that Arizona is actually the state 00:12:48.10\00:12:50.20 which has the most amount of sunlight hours in the year 00:12:50.40\00:12:53.03 out of all states. Well, you know, I can attest 00:12:53.27\00:12:56.24 to that because it is the hottest place I've ever seen. 00:12:56.44\00:12:59.41 I never have understood why a place that gets so hot 00:12:59.61\00:13:02.34 can also then get so cold. But whether hot or cold 00:13:02.54\00:13:05.28 you've got sunlight - yes - and that's a beautiful thing. 00:13:05.48\00:13:07.68 But I was going to say earlier that the sunlight IS FREE! 00:13:07.88\00:13:11.49 It's absolutely free. And I was looking at the cost 00:13:11.69\00:13:14.46 of just buying the vitamin D supplementation... 00:13:14.66\00:13:17.76 you know, supplements. It's expensive! Um-hmm. 00:13:17.96\00:13:21.10 And you can only get some for a little bit of a time. 00:13:21.30\00:13:23.63 So we want to do what God has already prepared for us... 00:13:24.03\00:13:28.67 and it is free. I think what we... I just need to interject. 00:13:28.87\00:13:32.04 As a physician here, having said all that 00:13:32.24\00:13:34.58 you know, there are cases where the supplementation 00:13:34.78\00:13:39.21 is appropriate... it's indicated. 00:13:39.51\00:13:41.78 You know, sometimes just thinking where the weather 00:13:41.98\00:13:46.59 does not permit to have the sunshine. 00:13:46.82\00:13:48.59 You need to do what you have to do. 00:13:48.79\00:13:50.83 But you can't be free. 00:13:51.03\00:13:53.66 Now, doc, you just brought up a good point. Now sometimes 00:13:55.36\00:13:59.83 there is a need for supplementation 00:14:00.14\00:14:01.70 but better to get the free. 00:14:01.90\00:14:03.54 What would be an indicator? Now can you check your vitamin D? 00:14:04.44\00:14:07.91 Could you just know it? Or what do you have to do to find out? 00:14:08.11\00:14:10.55 Remove the guesswork. You can have your physician 00:14:10.95\00:14:14.52 or your care provider do a vitamin D level. 00:14:14.72\00:14:17.62 And that's through blood work? And that's a blood test. 00:14:17.82\00:14:19.92 OK? Yes. Simple blood test. And there are numbers, right? 00:14:20.16\00:14:23.66 If you are somewhere between 25 and 50 that's a good number? 00:14:23.86\00:14:27.03 The numbers are supposed to be like 30 to 100 00:14:27.23\00:14:29.43 or some folk might might say 40 to 100. 00:14:29.63\00:14:32.17 And if you know you've not been... For example, 00:14:32.37\00:14:37.27 I work in the hospital so a lot of the nurses, 00:14:37.47\00:14:40.24 you know, graveyard shift. And in the graveyard shift 00:14:40.44\00:14:44.91 most of the time you go home you never see any sunlight. 00:14:45.11\00:14:47.62 I have some friends that have been near death 00:14:47.82\00:14:50.45 because their vitamin D levels were down to zero. 00:14:50.65\00:14:53.66 And yes, they had to be in the sunshine and they had 00:14:54.06\00:14:58.76 to get supplements in that case. 00:14:58.96\00:15:00.96 Wow! Wow! The point is it happens, and it is one of the 00:15:01.13\00:15:03.97 most frequently underdiagnosed conditions. 00:15:04.17\00:15:08.07 Hmm! 'Cause most people don't know their levels. 00:15:08.27\00:15:10.21 Absolutely. Unless you ask your doctor to actually test for that 00:15:10.41\00:15:13.88 you wouldn't know. That is correct. Is that right? 00:15:14.08\00:15:15.41 That is correct. So how much sunshine 00:15:15.54\00:15:17.81 should someone get? Because we want to be balanced 00:15:18.01\00:15:20.32 and we want to be correct in what we're talking about here. 00:15:20.52\00:15:23.15 But we don't want to tell people: "just go out there and 00:15:23.39\00:15:25.59 spend all day on their yacht" - right? 00:15:25.79\00:15:27.89 Um, so... Hold on a second. We want to make sure that people 00:15:28.19\00:15:31.53 are getting a healthy balanced amount of time 00:15:31.73\00:15:35.10 for sun exposure and not something that's going to be 00:15:35.30\00:15:37.67 unhealthy. So what is the right amount of time that? 00:15:37.87\00:15:41.44 You mentioned 20 minutes. Is that for everybody? 00:15:41.64\00:15:44.44 No it's not. Sunshine or sunlight has... 00:15:44.64\00:15:49.44 The process, you know... Some folks come endowed with 00:15:50.31\00:15:53.21 more melanin than others... the skin coloring. OK. 00:15:53.42\00:15:56.85 So the more melanin the darker skinned you are. 00:15:57.05\00:15:59.15 the longer it takes for the sunlight to penetrate, 00:15:59.45\00:16:02.56 to get through, to do its work with the cholesterol 00:16:02.76\00:16:05.33 under your skin. So, doc, I need a little more 00:16:05.53\00:16:08.50 than say Mwamiko, is that right? Actually it's the other way 00:16:08.70\00:16:10.80 around. He looks a little darker than you. 00:16:11.00\00:16:13.74 So he needs more - yes, yes - he needs more than I need. 00:16:14.04\00:16:17.44 Right. OK... OK. So... And if you are fair skinned 00:16:17.64\00:16:20.78 15-20 minutes is considered adequate. 00:16:21.04\00:16:24.41 If you are darker skinned then that might need to be pushed up 00:16:24.71\00:16:28.25 over half an hour or more... to an hour. 00:16:28.45\00:16:30.92 Aah... OK. Now I want to continue this, but let's... 00:16:31.12\00:16:35.09 We've heard what we are talking about here 00:16:35.29\00:16:36.86 and we've gotten some understanding, but then 00:16:37.06\00:16:40.20 we looked at the newsclip. Got some understanding from that. 00:16:40.40\00:16:42.86 We should revisit that as it relates to cancer. 00:16:43.06\00:16:46.03 But let's see what people are saying on the streets. 00:16:46.23\00:16:50.71 Sickness is out there. Let's see what they have to say. 00:16:51.01\00:16:53.44 Now I've got blue skin. You've got a little darker skin 00:16:55.51\00:16:59.08 than I do. Maybe I need some more sunshine 00:16:59.28\00:17:01.28 so I can get some skin cancer. What do you think of the sun? 00:17:01.48\00:17:03.52 Spending time in the sun? Umm... 00:17:03.72\00:17:06.99 Overrated, huh? Dangerous? Could be, yes... could be. 00:17:07.19\00:17:11.63 Do you know some people who have had too much sun exposure? 00:17:11.83\00:17:14.20 Not really. But people can overdo it. 00:17:14.36\00:17:17.27 People can overdo the sun. Yeah. 00:17:17.47\00:17:19.27 So maybe we could tell them to stay in their office 00:17:19.47\00:17:21.30 buildings all day long... stay safe. 00:17:21.50\00:17:23.61 You're looking at me like I'm crazy again, aren't you? 00:17:24.01\00:17:25.81 No, you need a certain amount of sun. 00:17:26.01\00:17:27.78 You need a certain amount? Do you know what you sound like? 00:17:27.98\00:17:29.44 You sound like my friend Rico. OK. 00:17:29.64\00:17:31.18 He likes to talk about sunshine - oh really? - 00:17:31.38\00:17:33.35 and how much we need. I think he's crazy and all these people 00:17:33.55\00:17:34.92 around here? Probably got skin cancer with advice like that. 00:17:35.12\00:17:38.25 You need to be careful. It's like practicing medicine 00:17:38.45\00:17:40.26 without a license. Um-hmm. Be careful of that. 00:17:40.46\00:17:42.86 What about this sunshine though? All you guys have got way too 00:17:43.16\00:17:44.89 much sunshine around here. What's that about? 00:17:45.09\00:17:46.70 Umm. The stuff will kill people. 00:17:46.90\00:17:49.03 Skin cancer... look at that! 00:17:49.33\00:17:51.43 That guy is suffering from severe skin cancer! 00:17:51.63\00:17:54.37 That's the sun's fault. 00:17:54.57\00:17:55.94 All right, what about the sunshine? 00:17:56.34\00:17:57.67 Umm. You ever get in the sunshine? Unh-um. 00:17:57.84\00:18:00.71 Unh-um. Why don't you like the sunshine? 00:18:00.91\00:18:02.24 I don't want to get any darker than this. You're tan enough. 00:18:02.28\00:18:04.28 You know what? Maybe I need a little more sunshine. 00:18:04.48\00:18:06.38 Naah... who needs the sunshine? It causes skin cancer. 00:18:06.58\00:18:09.62 Doesn't it cause skin cancer? Yep. 00:18:09.82\00:18:11.15 Too much "bathing" in it. Crystal clear: 00:18:11.19\00:18:13.52 the sun is bad for you! 00:18:13.72\00:18:16.26 Well... I think our understanding is correct. 00:18:17.26\00:18:20.76 People don't really spend much time in the sun, do they? 00:18:20.96\00:18:23.47 Hmm. They're afraid and, you know, they're just... 00:18:23.67\00:18:27.24 A lot of people just aren't getting recreation, 00:18:27.44\00:18:29.20 getting exercise. And if they do, even are 00:18:29.40\00:18:32.24 exercising in gymnasiums so they're not getting sunlight 00:18:32.44\00:18:35.68 there. I always say you get the triple threat when you 00:18:35.88\00:18:37.48 go out: you get some fresh air, you get some exercise 00:18:37.68\00:18:39.78 and some sunshine... all at the same time. Um-hmm. Right? 00:18:40.02\00:18:42.38 OK, let's get back to what we were talking about though 00:18:42.68\00:18:44.82 'cause sun exposure, the amount of time and all that 00:18:45.02\00:18:47.39 and different hues also play a part. 00:18:47.59\00:18:49.69 But then we saw in the news- clip and you mentioned that 00:18:49.89\00:18:52.49 vitamin D has an effect on the fighting of cancer 00:18:52.79\00:18:56.56 because it's actually shoring up the immune system, isn't it? 00:18:56.77\00:19:00.57 It's doing that and it's slowing the rate of growth. 00:19:00.97\00:19:03.77 Actually shrinking the rate of growth for certain cells... 00:19:03.97\00:19:08.14 the tumor cells. Wow! So this really is a clear point 00:19:08.34\00:19:12.48 that people need to get sunshine. 00:19:12.68\00:19:15.98 But should they go out there all day long and to the point 00:19:16.18\00:19:19.79 of almost like worshiping the sun? 00:19:19.99\00:19:22.16 'Cause some people do that, you know. 00:19:22.36\00:19:23.86 Some people go out there and they spend the whole day 00:19:24.06\00:19:26.29 and they just don't... you know... so what about that? 00:19:26.49\00:19:29.96 Or they just need a tanning salon just to have 00:19:30.17\00:19:32.63 the same effect. Right. Dangerous. 00:19:32.83\00:19:36.34 Why? Too much of a good thing. 00:19:36.74\00:19:38.14 Melanoma is tied directly to sunburn. 00:19:38.84\00:19:42.74 Um-hmm. A deadly cancer. Basal and squamous cell cancers. 00:19:42.94\00:19:47.32 They're the ones that are connected to over exposure 00:19:47.52\00:19:51.22 to the sunlight. So... like so many other things in life 00:19:51.42\00:19:55.52 there is benefit. 00:19:55.92\00:19:58.66 You could drown from drinking too much water 00:19:58.86\00:20:00.60 or you could have problems from taking too much 00:20:00.80\00:20:04.17 of something that is a good thing. Um-hmm. 00:20:04.37\00:20:06.40 So we want to always make sure that we are being... 00:20:07.44\00:20:10.67 doing things in moderation and we're being temperate. 00:20:10.87\00:20:13.64 And I might add one more thing, too, because sometimes 00:20:13.84\00:20:16.48 folks say: "I'm going to go out in the sunlight, enjoy this..." 00:20:16.71\00:20:19.08 and so you put on your skin blockers. Yes. 00:20:19.28\00:20:21.35 Well, if you're putting on your skin blockers 00:20:21.55\00:20:23.85 OK if you're going to be in the sun for 3 hours. 00:20:24.15\00:20:26.72 But that means that your body has not gotten any benefit 00:20:26.92\00:20:29.82 from being in the sun as far as vitamin D goes. 00:20:30.03\00:20:32.06 So if you want to get the benefit, you have to allow 00:20:32.46\00:20:36.06 some time for the natural sunlight to fall on your skin 00:20:36.26\00:20:39.50 and the skin only happens - unblocked - for a short time... 00:20:39.70\00:20:44.27 at least for your 20 to 30 minutes. Um-hmm. 00:20:44.47\00:20:46.47 So someone who's really really dark... they'd probably need to 00:20:46.71\00:20:49.38 be exposed to the sun without any kind of block 00:20:49.78\00:20:51.81 up to maybe 45 minutes to an hour maybe? 00:20:52.01\00:20:54.78 Maybe. Really dark complexioned? 00:20:54.98\00:20:56.82 Because I notice that sometimes you'll find 00:20:57.02\00:20:58.82 that in the African-American community that there is 00:20:59.02\00:21:01.96 very very low rates or levels of vitamin D. 00:21:02.16\00:21:05.89 And it's typically because we don't like to go out in the sun. 00:21:06.19\00:21:09.76 Some people have theories about that. 00:21:09.96\00:21:11.30 We don't like to hang out in the sun too much. 00:21:11.33\00:21:12.67 But... Yeah, the average level is around 19 00:21:12.83\00:21:15.54 in the African-American community. It's around 30 00:21:15.74\00:21:18.17 or so in that neighborhood for white 00:21:18.37\00:21:20.94 and Asian is around 35. 00:21:21.14\00:21:23.81 Hmm... 19? Um-hmm. Normal level being 30 to 100. 00:21:24.11\00:21:28.42 So that would require some supplements, wouldn't it? 00:21:28.62\00:21:30.89 It would require supplementing it with being out in the sun 00:21:31.19\00:21:33.82 to begin with - uh-huh - and you take it from there. 00:21:34.02\00:21:35.92 So you never want to go straight to the supplement. 00:21:36.12\00:21:38.19 You want to go to the source first. 00:21:38.39\00:21:40.46 That's how I like to do it. 00:21:40.76\00:21:42.06 I write for pills, but I... you know I have a heavy heart 00:21:42.16\00:21:46.30 every time I write a prescription. 00:21:46.50\00:21:48.04 Well, not so heavy... because I need the work. 00:21:48.24\00:21:50.24 Well, let's go to the source 00:21:52.34\00:21:54.28 because the Bible actually shows that the sun was important. 00:21:54.48\00:21:57.28 God created the sun. He spoke and it stood up in the sky 00:21:57.48\00:22:01.42 and it's been there ever since, hasn't it? Um-hmm. 00:22:01.62\00:22:03.42 And when we consider that when God took Adam 00:22:03.62\00:22:07.36 and He placed him in the garden 00:22:07.66\00:22:10.13 I always like to say He put him 00:22:10.53\00:22:11.86 in the eastern part of the garden. 00:22:11.89\00:22:13.80 Is there a reason why He put him in the 00:22:14.00\00:22:15.33 eastern part of the garden? 00:22:15.53\00:22:16.87 Catch the sunrise. The sun rises in the east, doesn't it? 00:22:17.23\00:22:20.30 Um-hmm. So this is a little indicator there in Genesis 00:22:20.50\00:22:22.97 that God had... He knew something that a lot of us 00:22:23.17\00:22:26.64 don't know: that Adam was going to need that burst of sunlight 00:22:26.84\00:22:31.15 to actually keep him in a healthy state. 00:22:31.35\00:22:34.08 And the studies show that the earlier part of the day 00:22:34.28\00:22:37.39 is when you get the best benefit for the sunlight. 00:22:37.59\00:22:40.22 I think they call it blue light. Um-hmm. Blue light... 00:22:40.42\00:22:42.96 where there is the ultra-violet rays - um-hmm - 00:22:43.16\00:22:45.43 entering into the eye and all that it does in terms of... 00:22:45.63\00:22:48.70 of setting the clocks of the body. 00:22:48.90\00:22:52.57 It's serotonin... stored in the eye. Yes, yes, yes. 00:22:52.77\00:22:55.64 And not to mention... Oh, I should mention it; 00:22:55.84\00:22:58.44 this is a program, I need to talk about... 00:22:58.64\00:23:00.08 But we need to talk about the fact that there is something 00:23:00.41\00:23:02.78 called liquid sunshine. Liquid sunshine. 00:23:02.98\00:23:05.61 Chlorophyll... Um-hmm... chlorophyll. 00:23:05.91\00:23:08.08 Again, going to the spiritual aspect of this 00:23:08.28\00:23:10.52 the sun actually is... this process called photosynthesis: 00:23:10.72\00:23:14.99 this is how our plants grow. 00:23:15.19\00:23:16.73 And they store up the energy from the sun 00:23:16.93\00:23:19.69 and then they transfer it to us. 00:23:19.89\00:23:22.70 So again, in the diet that God gave in the Bible - 00:23:22.90\00:23:27.10 the first one being fruits, nuts, grains, and seeds 00:23:27.30\00:23:29.24 in Genesis chapter 1 and verse 29 00:23:29.44\00:23:31.87 we see that He adds the leafy herbs or the greens 00:23:32.07\00:23:36.81 to the diet, and chlorophyll was a big part of that. 00:23:37.01\00:23:40.42 So again, God is doing something with sunshine 00:23:40.62\00:23:44.15 and sunlight for our health. Um-hmm. The Bible says 00:23:44.35\00:23:47.12 that He shall be like "the Sun of righteousness 00:23:47.32\00:23:50.09 rising with healing in His wings. " 00:23:50.39\00:23:52.83 So we see that there are some spiritual applications that can 00:23:53.23\00:23:56.30 be made. What do you all think about this? 00:23:56.50\00:23:58.03 Yeah. One of my favorite texts is I Peter 2:9 00:23:58.23\00:24:02.04 which is a message directly for this generation which says: 00:24:02.44\00:24:05.54 And as we were just discussing, that's physical light 00:24:16.58\00:24:19.52 but I believe it's also spiritual light. 00:24:19.72\00:24:21.96 Because an unenlightened person definitely won't make the right 00:24:22.16\00:24:25.33 choices as pertains to their spiritual 00:24:25.53\00:24:27.40 and their physical life. 00:24:27.60\00:24:28.90 So God wants us to experience both: 00:24:28.93\00:24:31.47 not only the sun 00:24:31.67\00:24:34.50 but also the Son. 00:24:34.80\00:24:38.44 Mmmm. 00:24:38.64\00:24:40.28 Getting from sun worship - S- U-N worship - 00:24:41.08\00:24:45.38 to worship... I like that. S- O-N worship. 00:24:45.78\00:24:48.58 Well I think we can conclude that 00:24:49.65\00:24:52.32 we don't have to be afraid of the S-U-N 00:24:52.52\00:24:55.82 nor do we have to be afraid of the S-O-N. 00:24:56.02\00:25:00.33 You kind of have to have your spelling right on this, 00:25:00.53\00:25:02.90 know what I mean? But nonetheless, 00:25:03.10\00:25:04.73 we're talking about two entities that give us warmth, 00:25:04.93\00:25:08.84 give us heat. It gives us life, yes? 00:25:09.04\00:25:12.94 And healing. And healing. Healing in the Son. 00:25:13.14\00:25:16.51 There's healing in the Son. In fact, we quoted - um-hmm - 00:25:16.75\00:25:19.91 Malachi 4:2 which says that the Sun of righteousness 00:25:20.12\00:25:23.89 shall come with healing in His wings. " 00:25:24.09\00:25:26.32 And it spells it S-U-N, but we know it's also the S-O-N. 00:25:26.62\00:25:29.79 So until next time, we invite you to tune in 00:25:30.03\00:25:34.20 for another program where we will be talking about 00:25:34.40\00:25:36.40 how you can live a healthy life according to God's Word 00:25:36.63\00:25:40.34 and good science. Thank you so much for being with us. 00:25:40.64\00:25:43.71 We'll see you next time. 00:25:43.91\00:25:45.24 In Malachi chapter 4 and verse 2 00:25:48.01\00:25:49.84 the Bible states: "But unto you that fear My name shall 00:25:50.05\00:25:53.88 the Sun of righteousness rise with healing in His wings. " 00:25:54.08\00:25:58.15 Friends, we need not fear the sun. 00:25:58.55\00:26:01.42 Neither should we revere it or even worship it 00:26:01.82\00:26:04.99 as the ancients did. However, 00:26:05.19\00:26:07.96 a healthy, balanced respect for the sun is necessary. 00:26:08.16\00:26:12.30 Now when God says: "He that fears My name... " 00:26:12.70\00:26:15.24 well He doesn't mean that we're supposed to be afraid of Him 00:26:15.54\00:26:17.84 in the traditional sense of fear. 00:26:18.04\00:26:19.94 No! He's talking about reverencing and standing in 00:26:20.18\00:26:23.75 awe of His power and majesty, His name. 00:26:23.95\00:26:27.62 Why? Because when you consider that big ball of fire 00:26:27.82\00:26:31.69 that's in the sky, it is just a faint representation 00:26:31.89\00:26:35.66 of His power and glory. Not to burn you or burn you up 00:26:35.86\00:26:39.93 but to heal you... to warm you. 00:26:40.13\00:26:43.10 Even sustain life as we know it. 00:26:43.53\00:26:47.20 So we should reverence and appreciate His name 00:26:47.40\00:26:51.27 because He created that great big ball of fire 00:26:51.47\00:26:55.71 for our benefit. In fact, you can go out 00:26:56.21\00:27:00.45 and you can experience the sun. Not only the S-U-N 00:27:00.65\00:27:04.25 but the S-O-N Son. 00:27:04.45\00:27:08.12 Both of them have healing powers. 00:27:08.52\00:27:11.86 Well there you have it. 00:27:12.06\00:27:13.73 Do you have anything else to say? 00:27:14.10\00:27:16.23 Nothing else to say as long as people are using 00:27:16.67\00:27:19.50 sun block, sunglasses, and hats like this 00:27:19.70\00:27:22.34 I think people will be just fine. No, no, no, no. 00:27:22.54\00:27:24.21 Please, keep your stuff. I've had enough of that. 00:27:24.34\00:27:26.24 The thing is is that your whole scare tactic 00:27:26.68\00:27:29.61 it's not working. Oh, it's working very nicely. 00:27:29.81\00:27:33.42 People in their cars on the way to work, 00:27:33.72\00:27:35.82 in the house all day... they're never out in the sun. 00:27:36.02\00:27:39.32 I think I'm winning. 00:27:39.62\00:27:40.96 Well, regardless of what he just said 00:27:41.19\00:27:43.19 our bodies were designed by God 00:27:43.43\00:27:46.93 to sleep when it's night 00:27:47.13\00:27:49.80 but during the day we are to be awake, outside 00:27:50.03\00:27:53.60 enjoying and experiencing the wonderful benefits 00:27:53.80\00:27:57.61 of sunlight. Well that's our show for today. 00:27:57.81\00:28:00.51 And I'd like to leave you with this as always: 00:28:00.71\00:28:02.81 III John 2 says: "Beloved, I wish above all things 00:28:03.01\00:28:06.51 that thou mayest prosper and be in health. " 00:28:06.75\00:28:09.82 Go out and experience the sun... both of them. 00:28:10.22\00:28:14.29 I'm Rico Hill, and I'm the blue guy. 00:28:14.69\00:28:17.56 Maranatha. 00:28:17.76\00:28:19.39
