Praise the Lord everyone. I'm Rico Hill, the host of 00:00:04.00\00:00:06.80 From Sickness to Health. And today I'd like to begin 00:00:07.00\00:00:09.97 the program with a quote from the Psalmist David 00:00:10.17\00:00:12.57 who said in Psalm 92 verses 1 and 2 00:00:12.87\00:00:16.34 "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord 00:00:16.54\00:00:20.12 and to see His lovingkindness in the morning. " 00:00:20.32\00:00:24.55 Yeah... after that first cup of coffee. 00:00:24.75\00:00:27.39 Coffee. Yeah, I need it. It's my quick pick-me-up 00:00:27.79\00:00:30.93 to get me goin' in the morning. I want some right now. 00:00:31.09\00:00:34.10 Well you can't have any right now because we have a program. 00:00:34.30\00:00:36.97 Oh, how I love caffeine! And my people... we love it. 00:00:37.17\00:00:40.67 Now, we as in your people? Me and you? Who's we? 00:00:40.87\00:00:44.57 My people all around the world. We have clearly spoken 00:00:44.77\00:00:47.64 about this delicious stuff. 00:00:47.94\00:00:49.78 In today's program we're going to let the facts speak 00:00:49.98\00:00:53.11 and perhaps those facts can actually help you and your 00:00:53.31\00:00:57.29 people. But, of course, I know what's going to happen. 00:00:57.49\00:00:59.99 Here's what's going to happen: you're going to try to hide 00:01:00.19\00:01:02.59 the truth, aren't you? Nope! Don't have to hide the truth 00:01:02.79\00:01:05.43 because my people love this stuff so much 00:01:05.73\00:01:08.90 that they can't live without it no matter what you say. 00:01:09.10\00:01:11.87 Watch me get them excited. 00:01:12.07\00:01:14.57 You know what? I've got an idea. 00:01:19.67\00:01:21.51 Caffeine! Caffeine! Caffeine! Caffeine! Look, 00:01:21.71\00:01:26.28 while he's chanting we're going to go ahead 00:01:26.48\00:01:28.25 and share some information with you today 00:01:28.45\00:01:30.25 that is going to show you the most widely-used legal drug 00:01:30.65\00:01:34.69 in the world: coffee. Stay tuned. Roll it. 00:01:34.89\00:01:38.99 Caffeine! Caffeine! 00:01:39.19\00:01:40.86 Welcome, and thank you for joining us here in the studio 00:02:17.23\00:02:20.07 of From Sickness To Health. I'm joined once again 00:02:20.27\00:02:23.84 with a wonderful couple of people. 00:02:24.04\00:02:25.87 My guests are Dr. Jim Said, board-certified chiropractor 00:02:26.07\00:02:30.45 and naturopathic doctor, and we're happy to have with us 00:02:30.65\00:02:34.22 once again Lydia Calhoun who is an ex pharmaceutical 00:02:34.42\00:02:38.15 executive. And again we're going to talk about 00:02:38.35\00:02:42.22 something that kind of relates to drugs 00:02:42.42\00:02:45.06 but this time it's a legal drug - 00:02:45.26\00:02:48.56 the world's most widely used legal drug. 00:02:48.76\00:02:53.10 And we're going to get some insights from both of you today. 00:02:53.40\00:02:56.20 So welcome to the program. Thank you; thank you so much. 00:02:56.40\00:02:58.67 Good to have you. OK, so we're talking about coffee. 00:02:58.87\00:03:01.31 Don't you love coffee? I was excited to have Lydia 00:03:02.38\00:03:07.22 join us today because you're going to find this fascinating. 00:03:07.42\00:03:10.09 But if there was ever a time when someone has never 00:03:10.49\00:03:14.79 ever had a cup of coffee you'd have to really search far 00:03:14.99\00:03:17.29 and wide, but Lydia has never had a cup of coffee 00:03:17.49\00:03:20.10 a day in her life. That's true. I've never even tasted it. 00:03:20.30\00:03:22.96 She's never tasted it! So I thought... 00:03:23.16\00:03:25.43 So what do you have to say about coffee? 00:03:25.90\00:03:28.04 Well I don't need it! I wake up very alert 00:03:28.24\00:03:30.81 in the morning and I have all the energy I need 00:03:31.01\00:03:33.64 when I step out of bed. In this program we're going to 00:03:33.84\00:03:36.75 find out why she has that energy. Why she wakes up 00:03:36.95\00:03:39.58 with a smile and she doesn't need coffee to do it. 00:03:39.78\00:03:41.55 So I think that's a good reason to have you on the program 00:03:41.95\00:03:44.22 today. But Dr. Said, we're going to look at this from 00:03:44.42\00:03:47.39 the standpoint of it being 00:03:47.59\00:03:49.72 almost like self-medicating. Is that right? That's accurate. 00:03:50.63\00:03:54.66 OK, so coffee is a self- medicator... that's right... 00:03:54.86\00:03:58.67 and everyone's using it. But they don't fully know 00:03:58.87\00:04:01.34 what they're doing when they do it, do they? No. 00:04:01.54\00:04:02.87 It's just automatic. They reach for the cup of coffee 00:04:03.07\00:04:05.41 to make up for what their body isn't able to do in the morning. 00:04:05.71\00:04:09.18 What their body isn't? Now why isn't their body 00:04:10.11\00:04:12.88 able to do it? Here's the idea: 00:04:13.08\00:04:15.52 the body's energy is regulated by a hormone. 00:04:16.58\00:04:20.09 That hormone comes from the adrenal glands... 00:04:20.39\00:04:23.29 the stress glands of the body. 00:04:23.69\00:04:25.59 The hormone is called cortisol. 00:04:25.79\00:04:29.20 Um-hmm. Now cortisol does two very specific things. 00:04:29.40\00:04:34.00 Cortisol maintains glucose - which is sugar - 00:04:35.04\00:04:39.77 to the brain to keep the brain alive... bottom line. 00:04:40.08\00:04:44.25 Your brain runs on a fuel called glucose... which 00:04:45.01\00:04:47.72 is a kind of sugar. But it's not the sugar you eat. 00:04:47.92\00:04:51.19 It's the sugar you use from the body. 00:04:51.39\00:04:53.86 Now if the brain's under stress 00:04:54.06\00:04:56.42 I call that a runaway locomotive. 00:04:56.62\00:04:58.49 It's demand for fuel is constant 00:04:58.89\00:05:01.60 so you're shoving coal into the engine to keep it going. 00:05:01.80\00:05:04.17 If you're running out of coal, then what? 00:05:04.53\00:05:06.74 The body uses its store of glucose 00:05:07.14\00:05:10.31 in the liver called glycogen. 00:05:10.51\00:05:13.14 Um-hmm. It uses up that store and the brain says: 00:05:13.34\00:05:16.01 "OK, I need more. Feed me! " 00:05:16.21\00:05:18.45 The body says: "I don't have any more glycogen to feed you. " 00:05:18.65\00:05:21.88 So the brain say: "All right, I know just what to do. " 00:05:22.28\00:05:25.05 It sends a releasing trigger to the adrenals 00:05:25.79\00:05:29.62 to pump out cortisol. 00:05:30.03\00:05:32.09 Um-hmm. Cortisol circulates through the body 00:05:32.29\00:05:34.63 and it tears down protein and converts that to glucose, 00:05:34.83\00:05:40.20 to sugar. It's tearing down so it's disrupting the natural 00:05:40.40\00:05:45.11 physiology and function of the body - yes - 00:05:45.31\00:05:47.71 in a way that is detrimental to this wonderful instrument 00:05:47.91\00:05:52.91 that God has given. Exactly. It's like taking 00:05:53.11\00:05:54.62 the floorboards out of the caboose to feed the engine. 00:05:54.82\00:05:56.72 Whoa! That's a good analogy. I like that! 00:05:56.92\00:05:59.19 Let's hold onto that thought - all right - you know because 00:05:59.39\00:06:01.79 we don't want to be accused of being unfair to those 00:06:01.99\00:06:05.79 who love their coffee. So let's go join Sickness 00:06:05.99\00:06:09.60 and see what he has to say about this strange brew. 00:06:09.80\00:06:14.17 Let's take a look. 00:06:14.37\00:06:15.70 I don't know about you, but I need a potent coffee 00:06:18.17\00:06:21.04 picker upper to get me going in the morning. 00:06:21.24\00:06:23.41 I'm talking caffeine. 00:06:23.61\00:06:25.68 And to get mine, I don't just drink one cup. 00:06:25.88\00:06:28.05 I drink two cups... at the same time. 00:06:28.35\00:06:30.92 You should try it. 00:06:31.22\00:06:32.75 You know, I love my addiction. 00:06:33.15\00:06:35.32 I mean I love my "taste" for coffee. 00:06:35.72\00:06:38.96 It's amazing. A lot of people do. I mean it's just savory. 00:06:39.26\00:06:42.86 And did you know that it's the most sought after commodity 00:06:43.26\00:06:46.60 in the entire world? More than sugar, crude oil, 00:06:46.80\00:06:50.21 corn, or even gold. 00:06:50.41\00:06:52.91 That's right. It's valuable and it's important to me. 00:06:53.31\00:06:56.28 I love the flavors; I love the smell. 00:06:56.48\00:06:59.35 And I think you should, too. 00:06:59.75\00:07:01.65 I'm going to have another one of these in about 30 minutes 00:07:01.85\00:07:04.52 and I can hardly wait. 00:07:05.55\00:07:07.69 Back to you, Rico. 00:07:08.09\00:07:09.89 You know, if there was any fact in what he said 00:07:12.69\00:07:16.36 it is a fact that coffee is the #2 commodity in the world 00:07:16.56\00:07:21.77 after crude oil. 00:07:21.97\00:07:24.11 Can you imagine it? Above gold and silver 00:07:24.31\00:07:28.98 and all the different grain products that we use 00:07:29.18\00:07:31.65 in abundance. No, no, no... it's coffee. 00:07:31.85\00:07:34.82 So... people love it. We can't deny that. 00:07:35.72\00:07:39.92 And he did say it smells great 00:07:40.12\00:07:42.99 and it does stimulate you in the morning just by smelling it. 00:07:43.19\00:07:47.50 What can be so bad about it? 00:07:47.66\00:07:49.66 Well, before we went to Sickness we talked about it's 00:07:49.86\00:07:52.77 disrupting the natural function of the body. Yeah? 00:07:52.97\00:07:57.44 You wanted to continue though. I wanted to hear more 00:07:57.84\00:07:59.74 about this whole physiology and how it is... It's doing more 00:07:59.94\00:08:04.68 than just sort of hijacking protein. 00:08:04.88\00:08:08.78 It's doing something to the heart; it's doing something 00:08:09.18\00:08:11.95 to the stomach. And we're going to look at a clip 00:08:12.15\00:08:14.52 that shows it's actually doing something to your brain. 00:08:14.72\00:08:17.79 Well, continue doctor. So what happens now is 00:08:17.99\00:08:20.30 you tear down protein so you now decrease the lean body mass 00:08:20.50\00:08:24.83 of the body so now you increase the fat body mass. 00:08:25.03\00:08:28.87 So as cortisol is surging you are literally increasing 00:08:29.27\00:08:33.88 fat stores as you strip away protein in the lean body mass 00:08:34.08\00:08:38.51 of the body. OK, let me make sure that we understand that. 00:08:38.71\00:08:40.95 So as you are disrupting protein 00:08:41.35\00:08:45.49 you're creating another environ- ment and that's fat storage. 00:08:45.69\00:08:49.22 So are we talking about causing people to gain weight? 00:08:49.42\00:08:52.46 Causing people's cholesterol to be raised? 00:08:52.66\00:08:55.63 What's happening by creating these fat stores? 00:08:55.83\00:08:59.07 That's what happens: I call coffee liquid sandpaper. 00:08:59.27\00:09:02.64 Oh, now there's an image. 00:09:03.04\00:09:05.37 Liquid sandpaper? The damage it's doing to the system 00:09:05.57\00:09:09.14 including the cardiovascular system and the liver. 00:09:09.34\00:09:11.88 So when we think of sandpaper we think of something that 00:09:12.08\00:09:15.15 is actually stripping away, it's abrasive, it's removing 00:09:15.35\00:09:18.45 something. Yes. A surface of something. 00:09:18.65\00:09:20.46 The surface of what is being stripped away? 00:09:20.66\00:09:23.12 It's causing an inflammatory reaction. 00:09:23.32\00:09:26.76 So every time a person goes to their coffee place of choice 00:09:27.16\00:09:31.53 or at home and they have some of this brew 00:09:31.73\00:09:36.10 they're actually causing an in- flamed situation in their body? 00:09:36.40\00:09:40.64 Yes. That's dangerous. 00:09:40.84\00:09:43.95 Now I think we need to remind people why that's dangerous. 00:09:44.25\00:09:47.12 Because inflammation generates scar tissue. 00:09:47.32\00:09:50.42 Scar tissue limits function and motion in health. 00:09:50.62\00:09:55.06 It damages inside the artery. It affects the liver adversely. 00:09:55.26\00:09:58.69 It can affect joints adversely. 00:09:58.89\00:10:00.86 This is the consequence of drinking this drug. 00:10:01.16\00:10:04.50 But here's why people drink it. 00:10:04.80\00:10:06.77 Over time, when the body is adapting to stress 00:10:07.17\00:10:10.31 the cortisol levels go down 00:10:10.51\00:10:14.14 because the adrenals can't produce the cortisol 00:10:14.34\00:10:18.08 'cause they fatigue. So then people reach for the coffee 00:10:18.28\00:10:21.42 to make up for what the adrenals aren't providing. 00:10:21.62\00:10:23.99 So they use coffee to stimulate them and pick them up in the 00:10:24.39\00:10:26.96 morning instead of cortisol. 00:10:27.16\00:10:29.52 Now, cortisol has a daily rhythm. 00:10:29.92\00:10:32.49 Cortisol is high in the morning and drops down to low at night. 00:10:32.89\00:10:36.83 So we're effective in adapting in the morning 00:10:37.77\00:10:40.67 and we're ready to go to sleep at night and recover and repair. 00:10:40.87\00:10:44.17 Um-hmm. When people fatigue their adrenals 00:10:44.37\00:10:47.14 the opposite occurs. They ruin the adrenal capacity 00:10:47.34\00:10:50.95 to produce cortisol in the morning... so they reach for 00:10:51.15\00:10:52.98 coffee to make up the difference. 00:10:53.18\00:10:54.75 And then cortisol rises at night and they can't sleep. 00:10:55.15\00:10:57.89 They can't sleep. So when people can't sleep 00:10:58.09\00:11:01.16 this is causing a whole "nother" host of problems. 00:11:01.36\00:11:04.49 Yes. Because then the adrenals have to produce cortisol at 00:11:04.69\00:11:07.80 night to raise the cortisol from night to morning 00:11:08.00\00:11:10.77 to reduce inflammation in the body from the previous day's 00:11:10.97\00:11:14.47 stress. This sounds to me like people are sleeping but 00:11:14.67\00:11:17.01 they're stressed while they're sleeping. Yes! 00:11:17.21\00:11:19.24 Can you imagine that? In fact, we call it hyper adaptosis. 00:11:19.64\00:11:23.41 We become addicted to stress. 00:11:23.61\00:11:25.91 So the body's in stress... Who likes stress though? 00:11:27.98\00:11:30.65 People don't enjoy stress but you're saying that when 00:11:31.05\00:11:34.32 we're drinking coffee we're actually creating an environment 00:11:34.52\00:11:37.46 where we are addicted to stress? 00:11:37.66\00:11:39.49 Yes, we're not at rest in our hearts. 00:11:39.69\00:11:41.96 OK, let's... I want to get Lydia in on this 00:11:42.36\00:11:45.43 because we're about to show a clip that is going to 00:11:45.63\00:11:49.30 really speak to what happens physiologically when we drink 00:11:49.50\00:11:53.44 coffee. Let's take a look at this clip. 00:11:53.64\00:11:55.08 This is going to... This is going to blow you away. 00:11:55.28\00:11:57.81 Let's take a look. 00:11:58.01\00:11:59.35 It's everywhere. From 320 mg in a Starbucks Caffè Grande - 00:12:01.08\00:12:05.42 about the max you should have in a day - 00:12:05.62\00:12:07.59 to energy drinks, to sodas... now even inhalables 00:12:07.79\00:12:11.66 100 mg in an instant. 00:12:11.86\00:12:14.10 But could that daily dose of caffeine be changing your brain? 00:12:14.30\00:12:18.07 We turned to researchers at Wake Forest in North Carolina 00:12:18.27\00:12:21.47 where I underwent two MRI brain scans. 00:12:21.77\00:12:25.67 The first scan with no caffeine in my system. 00:12:25.87\00:12:28.91 Then I downed just one drink. 00:12:29.21\00:12:31.71 Now my second MRI. 00:12:31.91\00:12:34.02 This was my brain before caffeine; this was after. 00:12:34.22\00:12:37.99 The difference was remarkable. 00:12:38.29\00:12:40.32 It's like a 40% drop in the blood flow to your brain. 00:12:40.52\00:12:43.66 That's a lot. So before caffeine? 00:12:43.86\00:12:46.39 With caffeine the blood flow to my brain 00:12:46.59\00:12:49.43 dropped about 40%? Went down 40%. Forty percent. Really? Yes. 00:12:49.63\00:12:53.40 Why the drop? Caffeine blocks a chemical called adenosine 00:12:53.70\00:12:57.67 which controls blood flow to the brain. 00:12:57.97\00:13:00.14 Add caffeine: blood vessels constrict, less blood circulates 00:13:00.34\00:13:04.11 in the brain and your blood pressure and heart rate go up. 00:13:04.31\00:13:07.62 So if you skip your regular coffee, that surging blood 00:13:07.98\00:13:11.52 can trigger a caffeine headache. 00:13:11.72\00:13:14.39 It's like trying to get a fire hose to pump blood up 00:13:14.59\00:13:16.79 through your skull. If you're a caffeine lover, 00:13:16.99\00:13:19.16 your brain has actually changed. It now functions normally 00:13:19.36\00:13:23.90 on caffeine. How much caffeine do I have to drink 00:13:24.10\00:13:27.04 to change the physiology of my brain? 00:13:27.24\00:13:29.10 Not very much. Not very much? Like even a cup a day? 00:13:29.30\00:13:31.74 One cup a day will change your brain. 00:13:31.94\00:13:33.31 Can you imagine that? You drink a cup of coffee 00:13:33.51\00:13:37.65 and the physiology of your brain has been changed? 00:13:37.85\00:13:42.88 Reduced by 40%? This has never happened to you, 00:13:43.08\00:13:47.46 at least not from coffee, right? At least not from coffee. Right. 00:13:47.66\00:13:50.29 What do you think about this: this drug that would actually 00:13:51.13\00:13:54.30 change the physiology of your brain 00:13:54.50\00:13:57.00 and yet it's completely legal? 00:13:57.20\00:14:00.17 Well, my opinion on coffee is I think it's a crutch. 00:14:00.47\00:14:04.77 And maybe it's just because I've never been addicted 00:14:05.67\00:14:09.04 to that. And I do understand that it is an addiction 00:14:09.24\00:14:12.15 for some people. But I've never had to lean on that 00:14:12.35\00:14:18.32 in order to start my day or pick me up during the day. 00:14:18.52\00:14:21.26 I don't know that there's any other way to put it 00:14:21.66\00:14:25.03 than it just becomes an addictive crutch. 00:14:25.23\00:14:27.96 I know you and I've seen how you function: you have a lot of 00:14:28.16\00:14:31.00 energy... so you don't need coffee to give you energy. 00:14:31.20\00:14:34.74 So we're seeing here, though, from this clip 00:14:35.14\00:14:38.34 that it blocks the hormone adenosine 00:14:38.54\00:14:43.21 and this has some relationship with headaches. 00:14:43.51\00:14:47.48 I mean, after while people can't get off of coffee 00:14:47.68\00:14:49.68 because they get a headache. You want to explain that, doc, 00:14:49.88\00:14:52.12 why this happens? It's a detoxing reaction also. 00:14:52.32\00:14:55.29 I've seen this in many many patients. 00:14:55.69\00:14:58.03 When they come off of coffee it's about a 5-10 days stint 00:14:58.23\00:15:01.70 of headaches. So I have them drink water - literally 1/2 cup 00:15:01.90\00:15:06.23 every hour through the day - to wash through the system 00:15:06.43\00:15:08.77 and cleanse the kidneys and the liver 00:15:08.97\00:15:10.41 more efficiently to make the headaches much less 00:15:10.61\00:15:12.87 and more quickly to go through that. 00:15:13.07\00:15:15.44 But it does clamp down vasculature to the brain 00:15:15.84\00:15:19.28 so that's the mechanism by which it works. Um-hmm. 00:15:19.58\00:15:22.85 I'd like to read something if I might from a book I really 00:15:23.05\00:15:25.22 enjoy called Counsels on Diet and Foods 00:15:25.42\00:15:28.16 that talks about the effect of coffee on the body 00:15:28.36\00:15:30.99 very briefly if I may. Please... go ahead, go ahead. 00:15:31.19\00:15:33.70 This is said: "The nerves of the stomach from coffee are 00:15:33.90\00:15:36.23 excited. These convey irritation to the brain. " 00:15:36.43\00:15:40.60 We talked about that gut/brain connection. 00:15:40.80\00:15:42.60 This is one of the ways it happens. 00:15:42.80\00:15:44.37 "And this in turn is aroused to impart increased action 00:15:44.57\00:15:48.48 to the heart... " So you get palpitations of the heart 00:15:48.68\00:15:50.61 commonly with coffee. 00:15:50.81\00:15:52.15 "and short-lived energy to the entire system. " 00:15:53.08\00:15:55.18 So there's energy that we feel is bursting, but it's not 00:15:55.38\00:15:57.92 a true energy to the system... 00:15:58.12\00:15:59.45 it's a stimulation to the nerves. OK. 00:16:00.56\00:16:01.89 "And there seems to be a strength that's increased... 00:16:02.09\00:16:05.19 but it's momentary and it's from excitement, 00:16:05.39\00:16:08.56 not from strength inherent in the body. " 00:16:08.76\00:16:11.63 "The intellect is aroused... " 00:16:11.83\00:16:13.84 So we're more hyper in our thinking. 00:16:14.04\00:16:15.60 "and the imagination becomes more vivid. " So people want 00:16:16.00\00:16:18.54 that to seem like they're clear but the downside is it leads 00:16:18.74\00:16:22.51 then to depression. And once depression occurs 00:16:22.71\00:16:25.91 what do we reach for? More coffee. That next cup of coffee. 00:16:26.11\00:16:29.65 So it's addictive in the sense that we are stimulated 00:16:30.05\00:16:33.12 depressed, stimulated depressed. And it continues 00:16:33.32\00:16:36.22 because the adrenals can't support the cortisol we need 00:16:36.42\00:16:39.96 to keep the energy levels that we require to function 00:16:40.16\00:16:43.57 through the day. Now will that cup of coffee 00:16:43.77\00:16:46.47 alleviate that bout with depression? 00:16:46.67\00:16:50.87 Or will one ever get to the place where the depression 00:16:51.07\00:16:54.64 is so severe that then I just need 00:16:54.84\00:16:58.81 something else like an anti-depressant? 00:16:59.01\00:17:02.05 This is common. I call it one step forward and two steps 00:17:02.45\00:17:05.55 backwards. Aah! So it's constantly digging a deeper 00:17:05.75\00:17:08.99 and deeper hole: that we have something else to try to get 00:17:09.19\00:17:11.79 out of when coffee is not enough. 00:17:11.99\00:17:13.36 When coffee is not enough. Wow! We probably should have 00:17:13.56\00:17:16.40 called this program When Coffee is not Enough. 00:17:16.60\00:17:19.43 Now... Lydia, now as an ex-pharmaceutical executive 00:17:19.93\00:17:25.84 what is out there in terms of drug medication 00:17:26.04\00:17:30.35 that would, for the person who might drink so much coffee 00:17:30.55\00:17:34.58 and it's not really enough, now they need something else? 00:17:34.78\00:17:36.79 What? I mean we don't have to get into the names 00:17:36.99\00:17:39.49 but are there certain things people are looking for? 00:17:39.69\00:17:42.09 Well, the #1 thing would be an anti-depressant. 00:17:42.29\00:17:45.83 If we're talking about coffee bringing on depression 00:17:46.03\00:17:49.46 and somebody is a chronic coffee drinker 00:17:49.66\00:17:51.87 it would lead to reason that they would be reaching 00:17:52.07\00:17:54.30 for an anti-depressant chronically as well. OK... 00:17:54.50\00:17:56.50 wait a minute. I just heard something. 00:17:56.71\00:17:58.34 So we're saying that the #2 commodity is coffee. 00:17:58.74\00:18:04.55 The #1 drug prescribed 00:18:05.41\00:18:10.19 in the marketplace is anti-depressants. 00:18:10.39\00:18:13.56 Is there a relationship? 00:18:13.96\00:18:15.49 Is there a connection or is that just coincidence? 00:18:15.69\00:18:18.83 Far from coincidence. 00:18:19.13\00:18:21.66 We live a lifestyle that leads to depression. 00:18:21.86\00:18:24.60 One of the keys is we have no anchor in our lives 00:18:25.00\00:18:29.44 to the Lord so we rely on ourself. 00:18:29.64\00:18:33.04 And we do things in our life- style that tear our bodies down 00:18:33.44\00:18:37.18 and we don't study nature and the Lord's laws in nature 00:18:37.48\00:18:42.65 that allow us to follow His way to heal. 00:18:43.05\00:18:46.99 And so we rely in our own ways. 00:18:47.39\00:18:49.69 And our own ways always lead to degradation of health. 00:18:50.09\00:18:54.60 And so it's essential that we start living a style of life 00:18:55.90\00:18:59.87 congruent with how we're created. 00:19:00.07\00:19:02.20 So it's imperative for us to understand physiology 00:19:02.40\00:19:05.41 and how we're made, and how we live supports how we're made 00:19:05.61\00:19:10.68 that we can live the life as true witnesses of our Creator. 00:19:10.88\00:19:14.58 We need to really help to educate people. 00:19:14.98\00:19:17.29 And really, that is the purpose of this program: 00:19:17.49\00:19:19.39 we want to make sure that you are equipped with as much 00:19:19.59\00:19:23.29 information that we can share. That's why we bring on the 00:19:23.49\00:19:26.56 experts to talk directly to you about what's happening in our 00:19:26.76\00:19:29.70 bodies. Now, I think it's probably important for us to go. 00:19:29.90\00:19:33.44 We've heard from the doc, we've heard from you, and 00:19:33.64\00:19:36.10 certainly you've heard from me and we even heard from the 00:19:36.30\00:19:38.34 newsclip. But let's hear from the people who are out there 00:19:38.54\00:19:41.61 on the street. What do they think about coffee? 00:19:41.81\00:19:43.61 You know, it's so confusing! One minute you have a program 00:19:43.81\00:19:47.12 that says coffee is helping you live longer, 00:19:47.32\00:19:51.05 it's fending off Alzheimer's. 00:19:51.45\00:19:54.82 The next minute a study that just came out very recently 00:19:55.02\00:19:57.49 said that people are dying within the first 15 years 00:19:57.69\00:20:02.26 of the program when they have the amount of coffee 00:20:02.46\00:20:04.73 that people are consuming right now. Um-hmm. 00:20:04.93\00:20:07.04 What is the truth? It's hard to tell. 00:20:07.24\00:20:09.97 But we do know that this is confusion, isn't it? 00:20:10.27\00:20:13.01 And the Bible tells us in I Corinthians 14:33 00:20:13.21\00:20:17.11 that "God is not the author of confusion. " 00:20:17.31\00:20:20.95 So let's take a look and let's hear some of the 00:20:21.15\00:20:24.32 confusion if you will. Let's go to the streets. 00:20:24.52\00:20:26.76 All right. I'm out here on the street, Sickness, and with me is 00:20:29.12\00:20:32.26 Duchess of Overstreet. The duchess! 00:20:32.46\00:20:35.66 Wow... what a pleasure. Where are you from? 00:20:35.86\00:20:37.60 Northern Alberta Canada. Canada. Today I'm with the 00:20:37.80\00:20:40.04 duchess of Canada. Now let me ask you a question: 00:20:40.24\00:20:42.14 what do you think of caffeine? 00:20:42.34\00:20:43.67 I think it's the only way some people get started 00:20:44.01\00:20:46.91 but it's really bad in large quantities. 00:20:47.11\00:20:49.28 It's really bad for you? Yeah, in large quantities. 00:20:49.48\00:20:51.71 Oh, large quantities. So a little bit every few hours 00:20:51.91\00:20:55.12 might be OK. In small amounts, yeah. 00:20:55.32\00:20:57.32 Small amount. Yeah, that's a good plan. 00:20:57.52\00:20:58.99 Caffeine. A lot of people have an issue with caffeine. 00:20:59.19\00:21:00.76 Do you love caffeine like I do? No! You don't love caffeine? No! 00:21:00.96\00:21:03.73 No. What's wrong with caffeine? It makes my heart race fast. 00:21:03.93\00:21:07.00 That's because it wants to get you going. No! 00:21:07.30\00:21:09.53 Caffeine is good. Palpitations. No... not for me. 00:21:09.83\00:21:12.57 Oh man, you're confused. You need a new doctor. 00:21:12.77\00:21:14.54 Well maybe. Yeah, she needs a new doctor. 00:21:14.74\00:21:16.81 She thinks caffeine is bad for her. 00:21:17.01\00:21:18.51 Tell me what you think about coffee. 00:21:18.71\00:21:20.71 Uh... it's great in the morning but not at night. 00:21:21.11\00:21:24.25 Uhn-um. Why would you say that? I cannot fall asleep 00:21:24.41\00:21:27.68 for nothin'. Well sleep is a total waste of time. 00:21:27.88\00:21:30.82 Why would you want to sleep? It is! I mean, I'm a student; 00:21:31.02\00:21:33.32 I've gotta stay up studying. Trying to conquer the world. 00:21:33.52\00:21:36.86 Jana does not sleep. She gets her milk in her coffee. 00:21:37.06\00:21:40.00 Everything good. Let's talk about this: caffeine. 00:21:40.20\00:21:42.63 What do you think about caffeine? Ah, man, that's... 00:21:42.83\00:21:45.87 Good. I used to be addicted, man. 00:21:47.30\00:21:50.34 Used to be? What? Did you quit? 00:21:50.54\00:21:51.94 Yeah. Can't quit on me, man. I had coffee this morning 00:21:52.14\00:21:54.14 but it was small. He didn't quit! He didn't quit! 00:21:54.34\00:21:56.98 I think the evidence is overwhelming: 00:21:57.18\00:22:00.75 Americans are addicts. 00:22:00.95\00:22:04.02 As long as we can get our caffeine in the morning, 00:22:04.22\00:22:07.12 the afternoon, late afternoon, evening, dinnertime, 00:22:07.32\00:22:11.69 just before bed... it's OK. 00:22:11.89\00:22:14.83 And that's a good thing. Addicts are OK with me. 00:22:16.23\00:22:20.10 Back to you, Rico. 00:22:20.40\00:22:21.80 I've gotta get some caffeine; I had got to get some caffeine. 00:22:22.20\00:22:25.31 Well, I don't know what to say about it, you know? 00:22:25.71\00:22:27.54 People... We see that people love it. 00:22:27.74\00:22:29.98 They want it. In fact, as we heard from the very beginning, 00:22:30.38\00:22:33.72 they need it. Um-hmm. They need it but do they 00:22:33.92\00:22:36.75 REALLY need it? According to what the doctor has shared 00:22:36.95\00:22:40.59 with us we don't really need it. 00:22:40.79\00:22:42.29 It's really doing something to our body, putting us in a 00:22:42.49\00:22:44.59 chronic state of depression and a chronic state of stress. 00:22:44.89\00:22:50.20 And that much stress on the body constantly 00:22:50.40\00:22:53.64 is tearing the body down. 00:22:53.84\00:22:55.47 And we may love the taste, we may love the smell, 00:22:55.67\00:22:58.51 we may even enjoy how it makes us feel 00:22:58.71\00:23:01.64 but ultimately it's going to have its consequences. 00:23:01.94\00:23:07.32 It's going to have its repercussions. 00:23:07.52\00:23:09.72 Now I wanted to just kind of get a summary 00:23:09.92\00:23:14.79 if you will, you know, of the things we've been talking about. 00:23:14.99\00:23:17.76 I love the fact that you have a practice. 00:23:18.76\00:23:21.33 I always tell our audience that you educate your patients. 00:23:21.53\00:23:24.53 Amen. You educate them, educate them, educate them. 00:23:24.73\00:23:27.67 And I'm sure you do it pleasantly and you do it 00:23:28.07\00:23:30.91 certainly intelligently. Um-hmm. 00:23:31.07\00:23:33.07 And you practice there in? In Medford, Oregon. 00:23:33.48\00:23:37.08 Medford, Oregon. But that's not all that you're doing. 00:23:37.28\00:23:39.95 You're taking this thing to the next step. 00:23:40.15\00:23:41.95 You're starting up some kind of a health center, 00:23:42.15\00:23:45.65 a lifestyle center, to deal with these chronic cases, right? 00:23:45.85\00:23:48.56 That's right. We have one in Idaho, 00:23:48.76\00:23:50.49 Open Door Ranch, and we have a second one 00:23:50.69\00:23:52.33 we're starting in Medford, Oregon, as well - 00:23:52.53\00:23:54.36 OK - under our umbrella of Open Door Life Institute. 00:23:54.66\00:23:57.63 And it is a medical missionary school and health care center 00:23:58.03\00:24:01.10 combined. Medical missionary? That means 00:24:01.30\00:24:02.80 that you are sharing... 'Cause a lot of people don't 00:24:03.00\00:24:05.11 know the term of medical missionary, but if you think 00:24:05.31\00:24:07.61 about a mission or missionary this is sharing the good news 00:24:07.81\00:24:11.98 of the gospel and the Word of God 00:24:12.18\00:24:14.15 but combining it also with the physical healing 00:24:14.35\00:24:17.39 that is needed... because they go together, don't they? 00:24:17.59\00:24:18.95 Absolutely. So you're... Essentially you are ministering 00:24:19.15\00:24:22.99 or you are blessing both mind, body, and spirit. 00:24:23.29\00:24:29.26 Yes. Making people whole. Absolutely. 00:24:29.46\00:24:31.87 You know friends, I believe that's exactly 00:24:32.07\00:24:34.50 how Christ did it and He would have us do the exact same thing. 00:24:34.90\00:24:37.91 Rather than dealing with the symptoms, dealing with 00:24:38.11\00:24:43.21 the issues in such a way where we medicate them 00:24:43.41\00:24:47.18 gets to the root of the problem. What is the cause? 00:24:47.38\00:24:49.95 And I really appreciate that about your practice 00:24:50.15\00:24:52.59 and your ministry. Now Lydia, I'm going to before 00:24:52.79\00:24:56.06 I read... before I have you tell and share what you're doing 00:24:56.26\00:25:00.30 'cause you were a pharmaceutical representative or executive 00:25:00.50\00:25:04.87 and you left that all alone. 00:25:05.17\00:25:08.27 You walked away from it because you didn't want 00:25:08.47\00:25:10.64 to be out there just medicating people 00:25:10.84\00:25:12.67 but you want to inspire people. You want to educate them 00:25:12.87\00:25:16.34 and you want to have them be blessed. 00:25:16.64\00:25:18.58 And, you know, there's something about what you said 00:25:18.78\00:25:22.85 in the beginning of the program when you said 00:25:23.05\00:25:24.72 "I never used coffee; I never needed it. 00:25:24.92\00:25:27.02 And I wake up feeling refreshed. " But there is a 00:25:27.32\00:25:30.73 spiritual side to this, and I want to just kind of read 00:25:30.93\00:25:33.03 this text and have you comment with what you're doing now. 00:25:33.23\00:25:38.40 OK. I think it's a blessing. OK... thank you. 00:25:38.60\00:25:40.74 In Psalm 143 and verse 8. Father, bless your Word. 00:25:40.94\00:25:44.04 In Jesus' name we do pray, Amen. 00:25:44.24\00:25:46.37 In Psalm 143:8 it says: 00:25:46.57\00:25:48.71 In 30 seconds can you tell us this whole "hear 00:26:03.09\00:26:06.13 Thy lovingkindness" because I've heard something from you 00:26:06.33\00:26:08.36 and it's heavenly. Thank you. So now what I'm doing 00:26:08.56\00:26:12.27 is I am a medical musician 00:26:12.47\00:26:15.67 and I do "Let Music Be Thy Medicine" which is a concert 00:26:15.87\00:26:18.87 seminar that brings together music and health. 00:26:19.07\00:26:21.98 Oh beautiful! So people can hear 00:26:22.28\00:26:25.61 the music of heaven, and it ministers not only to their 00:26:25.91\00:26:30.85 soul but it has some medicinal properties to it, right? Yes! 00:26:31.05\00:26:35.46 In fact, the clinical studies that I share 00:26:35.76\00:26:38.73 show that in many instances that classical music 00:26:38.93\00:26:42.16 has a beneficial effect that's superior to traditional 00:26:42.36\00:26:45.70 drug therapy. Amen! Well, I tell you, friends, 00:26:45.90\00:26:49.27 here's the thing: instead of picking up that cup of coffee 00:26:49.47\00:26:52.21 why not get up in the morning and commune with your Lord? 00:26:52.41\00:26:55.78 Take in the wonderful wonderful sweet savor 00:26:55.98\00:27:00.05 of God's love instead of that coffee 00:27:00.25\00:27:02.98 and allow yourself to hear Him. Because if we're drinking coffee 00:27:03.18\00:27:05.79 and reducing the amount of blood flow to the brain 00:27:05.99\00:27:08.82 the question for us is: can we hear His voice? 00:27:09.22\00:27:12.59 If our brains aren't functioning can we hear His voice? 00:27:13.70\00:27:16.30 Well, as always, we want you to be healthy. 00:27:16.60\00:27:19.73 We want you to go from sickness to health. 00:27:19.93\00:27:22.94 Here's the health that we're sharing with you today: 00:27:23.84\00:27:26.41 try God. 00:27:26.61\00:27:28.94 Truly the best part of waking up is when we wake up 00:27:30.21\00:27:33.28 with a zeal for life that only comes from the God of heaven. 00:27:33.48\00:27:36.15 Now we have shared a great deal about coffee today. 00:27:36.35\00:27:38.79 Now do I believe that people are just going to 00:27:39.19\00:27:41.99 stop drinking coffee and make the change? 00:27:42.19\00:27:44.79 Maybe some will... some won't. 00:27:46.13\00:27:49.26 I must confess I used to love the smell and taste of coffee 00:27:49.46\00:27:54.24 in the morning. Aah! However, when I lined up 00:27:54.44\00:27:58.07 the effects of coffee versus the benefits 00:27:58.27\00:28:01.24 well, the harmful effects outweighed the benefits 00:28:01.64\00:28:04.61 and I had to make a choice. 00:28:04.81\00:28:06.15 My prayer, my hope for you today is that you'll also 00:28:06.18\00:28:08.38 make a choice. Rico, do you really think 00:28:08.58\00:28:10.55 information trumps addiction? 00:28:10.75\00:28:13.19 Again I say: my people are jittery and headachy 00:28:16.02\00:28:19.39 for a lack of caffeine. Well, the Word of God says 00:28:19.69\00:28:23.16 "My people perish for lack of knowledge. " 00:28:23.37\00:28:26.60 Hosea 4:6. And with that knowledge 00:28:26.80\00:28:30.07 "We can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth us. " 00:28:30.91\00:28:33.64 Philippians 4:13. 00:28:33.94\00:28:35.91 We'll see. Well... that is our program for today. 00:28:36.11\00:28:39.75 And I'd like to end it the way I always do: 00:28:39.95\00:28:42.38 remember III John 2: "Beloved, 00:28:42.58\00:28:46.92 I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper 00:28:47.12\00:28:49.59 and be in health. " I'm Rico Hill. Be healthy. 00:28:49.89\00:28:53.13 And I'm blue guy... in need of one more cup of brew. 00:28:53.43\00:28:56.03 Maranatha. 00:28:56.23\00:28:57.70
