Hey buddy. Hey, hey. 00:00:06.43\00:00:08.00 Proverbs 18:24 states 00:00:08.90\00:00:11.04 "A man that has friends must show himself friendly 00:00:11.47\00:00:15.14 and there is a Friend that sticks closer than a brother. " 00:00:15.54\00:00:18.95 Hello and welcome to From Sickness to Health. 00:00:19.15\00:00:22.22 I'm Rico Hill. your host, and this is Sickness my... 00:00:22.72\00:00:25.95 What are we exactly? We're friends. 00:00:26.35\00:00:29.02 Really? I mean you're all about the whole sick thing 00:00:29.62\00:00:31.99 and I'm more about health and we don't agree on anything so... 00:00:32.19\00:00:34.76 Well, that's because you're... how do I say this gently? 00:00:34.96\00:00:37.87 EXTREME! 00:00:38.27\00:00:39.97 Really? Give me one example. OK. 00:00:40.57\00:00:44.14 I'll give you one example. All right. 00:00:44.44\00:00:45.77 Let's take your definition of health. OK. 00:00:45.97\00:00:48.48 You think people should be healthy every single day. 00:00:48.68\00:00:51.21 That they should never get sick. 00:00:51.41\00:00:53.18 You know, people like some sympathy when they're sick. 00:00:53.38\00:00:55.72 For instance: "Oh baby, how're you doing? 00:00:55.92\00:00:59.52 Do you feel OK? " People love that stuff! 00:00:59.72\00:01:02.16 Then let's talk about sick days. People love sick days. 00:01:02.36\00:01:06.29 All right. Fine, fine, fine... but... 00:01:06.49\00:01:07.90 but here's the thing: You're my friend, right? 00:01:08.10\00:01:10.27 That's right. OK, so as my friend it wouldn't bother you if 00:01:10.47\00:01:14.44 I had aching joints? Having sleepless nights 00:01:14.64\00:01:18.81 because of migraines? What if I had to fork out 00:01:19.01\00:01:23.01 thousands of dollars for expensive rehabilitation 00:01:23.21\00:01:27.35 and all this. Or heart attack? It wouldn't bother you 00:01:27.55\00:01:30.45 if I? Oh, how about deforming crippling arthritis? 00:01:30.65\00:01:33.86 I'm totally fine with it. 00:01:34.26\00:01:36.19 Wow! In today's program we're going to identify 00:01:36.39\00:01:41.36 real friends versus those that just hang around like 00:01:41.56\00:01:45.93 friends but they're really not. Hey! I can hear you. 00:01:46.13\00:01:49.30 Right over here. I can hear you talking about me. 00:01:49.50\00:01:51.51 Come on... Roll it! 00:01:51.71\00:01:53.81 Rico. Oh Rico, come back here. 00:01:54.01\00:01:56.61 Hey... get back over here. Hey! 00:01:56.81\00:01:59.01 We're friends and you should identify that. 00:01:59.41\00:02:01.65 Have you ever had a pain in your neck 00:02:35.98\00:02:38.59 or somewhere else on your body that just wouldn't go away? 00:02:39.09\00:02:41.89 Or better yet, have you ever had 00:02:42.09\00:02:45.06 something that hung around and you embraced it like a friend 00:02:45.26\00:02:49.63 or family member? You know, we're talking about 00:02:49.83\00:02:53.84 arthritis today. And you know sometimes people embrace 00:02:54.24\00:02:57.74 their pain like it's a friend or a family member. 00:02:57.94\00:03:00.81 Now we wouldn't do that if someone robbed our house. 00:03:01.01\00:03:03.55 We wouldn't say, you know: "My robber. " 00:03:03.75\00:03:06.51 So today we want to separate what's a friend and what's an 00:03:06.92\00:03:11.09 enemy and who we should be embracing. 00:03:11.29\00:03:13.49 Today we have joining us our good friend, and he IS a friend, 00:03:13.69\00:03:16.89 Dr. Jim Said who is a board-certified chiropractor 00:03:17.09\00:03:21.03 and a naturopathic doctor. 00:03:21.23\00:03:23.37 And as I always say, he is on the forefront of 00:03:23.77\00:03:26.94 educating people about good health. 00:03:27.14\00:03:29.50 Welcome to the program. 00:03:29.70\00:03:31.31 Thank you so much for having me. It's a pleasure to be here. 00:03:31.71\00:03:34.08 Well we're really happy to have you with us 00:03:34.28\00:03:35.74 because we're talking about a subject that people need 00:03:35.94\00:03:38.51 to understand today. Now, we find that millions 00:03:38.71\00:03:43.35 of Americans, doc, millions of them 00:03:43.55\00:03:46.79 are affected by this lifestyle disease. 00:03:46.99\00:03:49.82 Certainly in the African- American community. Sadly. 00:03:50.03\00:03:53.19 But what really sort of strikes me is that this particular 00:03:53.40\00:03:57.70 lifestyle disease has become affectionately known 00:03:57.90\00:04:01.24 as "Arthur" or "Uncle Arthur. " Um-hmm. 00:04:01.44\00:04:07.01 So in other words, it's being embraced as if it 00:04:07.21\00:04:09.64 were a family member. But we want to really show 00:04:09.84\00:04:12.45 that this is no friend and it's no family member, right? 00:04:12.65\00:04:15.12 Absolutely. But before we do that, let's allow 00:04:15.32\00:04:18.29 our, well so-called friend Sickness 00:04:18.49\00:04:21.82 on this program to get his point in 00:04:22.02\00:04:25.16 before we get into the discussion. Let's see what he 00:04:25.36\00:04:27.20 has to say. 00:04:27.40\00:04:29.20 Hey Rico, since we're talking about friendship 00:04:30.73\00:04:33.54 one of my good friends is in town today. 00:04:33.74\00:04:36.81 You may know him: Arthur. You know, a lot of people 00:04:37.21\00:04:39.77 call him Arthur-ritis. Arthur-ritis... get it? 00:04:39.97\00:04:43.58 Sixty million Americans suffer from this doctor diagnosed 00:04:44.38\00:04:48.62 disease. That's nearly 1 in 5... do the math. 00:04:48.82\00:04:52.32 I just did. Anyway... 2/3 of those are under the age 00:04:52.52\00:04:56.83 of 65 so it's not just an old folk disease. 00:04:57.03\00:05:00.46 You know what I mean? Let's take this lady over here for example. 00:05:00.66\00:05:04.27 As you can see, she's got a lot of blue areas. 00:05:04.73\00:05:08.14 That's my friend Arthur at work. 00:05:08.34\00:05:11.41 Let's just see. Lady... does that hurt? AAAH! 00:05:11.91\00:05:14.88 Well, you can see what a real friendship looks like. 00:05:15.78\00:05:18.95 We may not have it but Arthur and I do. 00:05:19.45\00:05:21.88 Back to you, Rico. 00:05:22.28\00:05:23.79 Whoa! Poor lady, right? 00:05:24.69\00:05:27.49 Absolutely. Well doc, what do you have to say about 00:05:27.69\00:05:31.56 this issue of "Uncle Arthur? " 00:05:31.76\00:05:35.46 I feel badly for the family member, that's for sure - 00:05:35.86\00:05:37.90 yeah, yeah - because it's a huge issue. 00:05:38.10\00:05:40.04 It affects so many and we see that there are over 100 types 00:05:40.34\00:05:45.87 of arthritis. How about this? There are some common ones... 00:05:46.07\00:05:49.84 over 100... but there are some common ones, right? 00:05:50.05\00:05:51.75 Osteoarthritis; rheumatoid arthritis. 00:05:52.05\00:05:55.42 You've got infectious arthritis and there's a fourth one. 00:05:55.62\00:05:58.05 What's that fourth one? Rheumatoid? 00:05:58.25\00:06:00.22 Juvenile rheumatoid? You mean this is affecting children? 00:06:00.42\00:06:02.46 Um-hmm. Talk to us about these common ones. 00:06:02.66\00:06:05.46 The biggest issue about arth- ritis is very straightforward. 00:06:05.86\00:06:09.26 It means inflammation of a joint. 00:06:09.66\00:06:11.77 Whether it's acute. In other words, it's hurting 00:06:11.97\00:06:15.50 from some kind of an injury that's an arthritis. 00:06:15.70\00:06:18.07 From an infection can be an arthritis. 00:06:18.27\00:06:19.97 Or in the case of rheumatoid or juvenile-onset it can be 00:06:21.04\00:06:25.15 a connective tissue disease... that is, the body is attacking 00:06:25.35\00:06:27.92 the joint itself. The immune system has gone awry. 00:06:28.12\00:06:31.19 It's gone haywire and it's seeing its own tissues 00:06:31.39\00:06:34.79 as foreign and it wants to get rid of them. 00:06:34.99\00:06:36.76 All these lead to inflammation of the joint. 00:06:37.16\00:06:39.59 The biggest issue most people suffer with 00:06:40.56\00:06:42.50 is chronic arthritis. Chronic arthritis. 00:06:42.70\00:06:45.03 Osteoarthritis it's also called. 00:06:45.43\00:06:47.00 And this is a condition that really has two drivers. 00:06:48.00\00:06:51.61 One is by the mechanics of the body: 00:06:52.01\00:06:54.94 posture and how we use the body. 00:06:55.14\00:06:56.75 And the other has to do with what we eat - 00:06:57.15\00:07:00.65 our style of living - and also how we exercise 00:07:00.85\00:07:04.19 and stretch and keep movement and flexibility of the body. 00:07:04.39\00:07:07.66 I'll give you an example. 00:07:08.06\00:07:09.72 This is something I see literally every day in practice. 00:07:10.13\00:07:12.79 OK. Bad posture. People... Sit up! 00:07:12.99\00:07:16.36 Go ahead. People who chronically slouch. 00:07:18.03\00:07:20.57 Yeah. The classic couch potato 00:07:20.77\00:07:23.47 or someone sitting over a computer desk 00:07:23.87\00:07:26.68 or over a counter all day 00:07:26.88\00:07:29.18 where the back is forward and the back is "slunched" 00:07:29.38\00:07:31.78 and that's how they spend hours and hours a day. 00:07:32.18\00:07:35.38 The problem with that is the effect is has on the body. 00:07:35.78\00:07:39.15 Give an example: in a slouched position 00:07:39.45\00:07:42.76 the low back goes in reverse. 00:07:43.16\00:07:46.26 It's designed to go forward; slouching has it come backwards. 00:07:46.46\00:07:49.86 Then what it does is it causes the mid back to round 00:07:50.27\00:07:53.70 and then the shoulders start wrenching forward. 00:07:54.60\00:07:56.97 Then the neck has to come up to be able to keep the eyes 00:07:57.17\00:07:59.41 level to the horizon. Um-hmm. That's how we're designed. 00:07:59.61\00:08:01.98 At the same time, the back of the thighs - the hamstrings - 00:08:02.38\00:08:06.45 tighten. So do the calves. So people can't touch their toes 00:08:06.95\00:08:11.65 easily for example. Um-hmm. What that does 00:08:11.85\00:08:14.96 is it causes the whole spine to come forward 00:08:15.16\00:08:17.53 and now the muscles have to splint or tighten 00:08:17.73\00:08:20.10 so you don't collapse forward. 00:08:20.30\00:08:22.23 At the same time the feet literally start to duck. 00:08:22.73\00:08:27.64 They splay outwards. They start duck walking. 00:08:27.94\00:08:30.71 Yeah. And then the hips start to tighten behind the hips. 00:08:30.91\00:08:34.44 Called the external rotators: the hip muscles that turn 00:08:35.04\00:08:39.18 the hips out. And it perpetuates itself. 00:08:39.38\00:08:42.48 Then what happens is it causes the brain to compress. 00:08:42.88\00:08:46.45 The net effect. Now let me try to understand that. 00:08:47.72\00:08:50.73 So the brain is compressing? Yes. How so? 00:08:50.93\00:08:54.23 How is the brain compressing? The brain has a covering 00:08:54.43\00:08:57.43 around it called meninges. It just means covering in Latin. 00:08:57.63\00:09:01.47 And those coverings anchor to the skull 00:09:01.87\00:09:05.11 and the beginning and end of the spinal cord 00:09:05.31\00:09:08.84 in the neck and in the sacrum... the tail bone. 00:09:09.84\00:09:12.88 As it compresses, the brain is like a water balloon 00:09:13.88\00:09:18.12 if you will. You're pulling on it - 00:09:18.32\00:09:19.89 um-hmm - and so it starts to compress. 00:09:20.09\00:09:22.42 Then what happens is the vertebrae in the spine 00:09:22.82\00:09:26.09 start to reshape 00:09:26.49\00:09:29.00 and become arthritic literally. 00:09:29.30\00:09:32.27 Now I like something you said there. 00:09:32.67\00:09:35.77 I like all that you said, but you used the word designed. 00:09:35.97\00:09:38.71 So we specifically were designed by God 00:09:38.91\00:09:42.74 to walk a certain way, to sit a certain way. 00:09:42.94\00:09:45.21 To have good posture and all these things. When we don't 00:09:45.41\00:09:48.88 do that it affects our skeletal structure. 00:09:49.08\00:09:53.46 Now I want to show a video real quick here 00:09:53.66\00:09:56.73 that's going to give us some insight because 00:09:56.93\00:09:59.09 they were talking about arthritis on the news. 00:09:59.29\00:10:01.23 So let's take a look at this video. 00:10:01.43\00:10:02.76 Dr. Holly Phillips is with us. Good morning. 00:10:04.23\00:10:06.84 Good morning. OK, we all did it when we were younger: 00:10:07.04\00:10:09.10 cracking our knuckles. Fact or fiction? Does that cause 00:10:09.30\00:10:11.74 arthritis? Well, cracking your knuckles... 00:10:11.94\00:10:13.81 that's absolutely fiction. It does not cause arthritis. 00:10:14.01\00:10:16.58 But you know, if your mom told you not to do it 00:10:16.78\00:10:18.48 she was on to something. 00:10:18.88\00:10:20.52 Even though it doesn't cause arthritis it damages 00:10:20.72\00:10:22.85 the joints in other ways. It stretches out the tendons 00:10:23.05\00:10:25.32 and the ligaments and in really bad cases can 00:10:25.52\00:10:27.99 decrease your grip strength. So mom was on to something 00:10:28.19\00:10:31.03 when she said "Don't do it. " How about wearing high heels? 00:10:31.23\00:10:33.29 High heels, regretfully for many of us, 00:10:33.96\00:10:35.80 that is a fact. It does lead to arthritis. 00:10:36.80\00:10:39.63 And what's interesting is two inches seems to be the 00:10:40.04\00:10:42.97 critical break point. Heels higher than two inches 00:10:43.17\00:10:45.54 cause something called medial loading... where you put more 00:10:45.74\00:10:48.44 pressure on the inside of your knees. 00:10:48.64\00:10:50.38 That degenerates the joint and leads to arthritis. 00:10:50.58\00:10:52.88 This is a little bit more than two inches. 00:10:53.08\00:10:54.82 Just a tad... just a tad... maybe three times as much. 00:10:55.02\00:10:57.69 I may have arthritis tomorrow after wearing these. 00:10:57.89\00:11:00.29 All right. The higher the heel the longer you wear it, too, 00:11:00.49\00:11:02.69 that raises your risk. So you can wear those for five minutes. 00:11:02.89\00:11:05.09 You're good. OK... good. What about weather? 00:11:05.39\00:11:07.06 It certainly can exacerbate I think arthritis, but does it 00:11:07.26\00:11:09.90 cause it? That's absolutely right. 00:11:10.10\00:11:11.87 It's fiction that it causes arthritis. 00:11:12.07\00:11:14.37 The weather cannot trigger arthritis in somebody who 00:11:14.57\00:11:16.60 doesn't already have it. But cold and damp conditions 00:11:16.81\00:11:19.84 can really worsen arthritis pain for sufferers. 00:11:20.04\00:11:22.94 It causes swelling of the tissues around the joint 00:11:23.14\00:11:25.28 and then causes pain. And weight? 00:11:25.48\00:11:27.88 Does it affect arthritis? Weight is very much a fact. 00:11:28.08\00:11:31.32 It very much affects arthritis. 00:11:31.52\00:11:33.19 Now overweight and obesity are a top cause of osteoarthritis 00:11:33.39\00:11:37.19 of the hips, of the spine, and of the knees. 00:11:37.39\00:11:39.76 And just keep in mind every pound that you gain 00:11:39.96\00:11:42.66 feels like four pounds on your knees. 00:11:42.86\00:11:45.03 So it can add up very very quickly 00:11:45.23\00:11:47.00 and really degenerate the joints. 00:11:47.20\00:11:48.54 All right. Dr. Holly Phillips. Some good information. 00:11:48.67\00:11:50.87 Wow! You know, doc, it's interesting. When you... 00:11:51.27\00:11:53.24 When you watch the news they give you information 00:11:53.44\00:11:56.51 but there's not a lot of understanding there. 00:11:56.91\00:12:00.02 You know, they talk about the high-heeled shoes 00:12:00.22\00:12:02.82 and they talk about the weather 00:12:03.02\00:12:05.52 and how that affects. And Lord knows I've heard 00:12:05.72\00:12:08.76 many of my relatives say: "Oh, it's going to rain. " 00:12:08.96\00:12:12.39 "I feel it's about to rain because Arthur is acting up. " 00:12:12.59\00:12:16.50 That's what they say. So... But there's no understanding. 00:12:16.80\00:12:19.77 Why does that happen? And then they also mention obesity. 00:12:19.97\00:12:22.90 Let's take those three areas. 00:12:23.10\00:12:25.11 And then I want to make sure that we cover before... Maybe 00:12:25.31\00:12:27.51 before we go and check what people are saying on the street 00:12:27.71\00:12:30.98 we want to hear what we have to say here. 00:12:31.18\00:12:32.71 We want to check what they have to say on the street 00:12:32.91\00:12:34.75 but I want to make sure that we... What about the high heels? 00:12:34.95\00:12:37.79 What about the weather? What about the obesity? 00:12:37.99\00:12:42.26 And then what about diet? Um-hmm. 00:12:42.46\00:12:45.09 So let's start with high heels. 00:12:45.29\00:12:47.53 OK... here's the problem: when high heels are worn 00:12:47.73\00:12:51.43 it causes the calves to tighten and the back of the thighs - 00:12:51.83\00:12:55.07 the hamstrings - to tighten causing the low back to round 00:12:55.27\00:12:58.21 and the upper body to go forward. 00:12:58.41\00:12:59.84 Also it forces the tail bone to go at a higher angle 00:13:00.24\00:13:04.65 than we're designed. Um-hmm. So the body is trying to compensate 00:13:04.85\00:13:08.02 for two things in opposite directions. 00:13:08.22\00:13:10.65 Pulling against each other. Pulling against each other. 00:13:10.95\00:13:12.95 So the muscles force shortening... tighten... 00:13:13.15\00:13:14.92 and as a result it causes compression 00:13:15.32\00:13:17.96 on all the joints that are involved... 00:13:18.16\00:13:19.63 especially in the spine. 00:13:20.23\00:13:21.56 So I see this with many women that have worn high heels 00:13:22.40\00:13:24.53 for a long time. Not only does it cause bunions 00:13:24.73\00:13:27.54 because it's forcing the feet down - 00:13:27.94\00:13:29.94 yeah - and the foot shortens and the toes start to cross 00:13:30.14\00:13:33.98 and hammer toes start to form commonly but it also 00:13:34.18\00:13:38.38 starts creating problems in the neck and low back 00:13:38.58\00:13:40.32 and the joints start to inflame 00:13:40.72\00:13:42.58 because they're used in a way that they're not designed. 00:13:42.98\00:13:45.35 Not designed that way. How long would it take 00:13:45.55\00:13:48.02 for a woman who's wearing high heels to end up 00:13:48.42\00:13:51.23 in the place where arthritis may set in? 00:13:51.43\00:13:53.86 Is it 10 years? 15 years? 20 years? 00:13:54.06\00:13:55.73 Well it depends. It depends on the person's age, 00:13:56.13\00:13:59.67 what they're eating, how high the heels are. OK. 00:13:59.87\00:14:02.00 For example, a two-inch heel is what the body can usually 00:14:02.20\00:14:05.47 accommodate at the upper limit. Um-hmm. 00:14:05.67\00:14:07.48 3, 4, 5 inches puts a greater stress on the body. 00:14:07.78\00:14:10.68 If a person's younger, they're more resilient. 00:14:11.78\00:14:13.82 They're more flexible; they're more of an athletic 00:14:14.02\00:14:16.45 constitution that can accommodate it more easily 00:14:16.65\00:14:19.79 than someone who doesn't exercise, who doesn't stretch. 00:14:19.99\00:14:21.99 Someone who's older, someone who's overweight: 00:14:22.19\00:14:23.83 these are the things that start becoming progressive issues. 00:14:24.03\00:14:26.26 I see, so... All right, so that's high heels. 00:14:26.66\00:14:29.03 So this is something that can lead obviously to arthritis. 00:14:29.23\00:14:32.60 Yes. Now in that little news clip we saw we saw also 00:14:32.90\00:14:35.94 weather. Now I have certainly heard, and I mentioned that, 00:14:36.14\00:14:38.61 that people say you know: "It's about to rain 00:14:38.81\00:14:41.44 because Arthur's acting up. " What is it about weather? 00:14:41.64\00:14:44.05 Yeah, I have many patients who are more accurate than 00:14:44.25\00:14:46.21 the weather people. And here's what happens: 00:14:46.41\00:14:49.05 when a weather front comes in the barometric pressure drops. 00:14:49.45\00:14:52.72 That's what brings that weather front in. 00:14:53.02\00:14:54.52 When it drops - like at night- time the same kind of thing 00:14:54.92\00:14:57.86 happens - anything that's inflamed inflames even more. 00:14:58.06\00:15:00.96 So the joint that's inflamed will express greater pain 00:15:01.86\00:15:04.90 because it's swelling more than it was when the barometric 00:15:05.20\00:15:07.90 pressure was higher. OK. That's the issue with weather. 00:15:08.10\00:15:10.81 For those who may not know what barometric pressure is 00:15:11.01\00:15:14.21 what is that exactly? It's the pressure 00:15:14.41\00:15:16.01 that we have around us in the atmosphere. OK. 00:15:16.21\00:15:19.41 And it's going up and down depending on many different 00:15:19.61\00:15:21.95 factors. And when it's about to rain, the pressure is? 00:15:22.15\00:15:25.55 Pushing down. It drops. It drops. 00:15:25.75\00:15:27.79 Right. That's what brings the weather front in. 00:15:27.99\00:15:30.99 So as that happens, joints will inflame more than they were 00:15:31.39\00:15:35.16 even prior to that. Well doc, who wants to be 00:15:35.36\00:15:37.70 a... you know... telling the weather with pain? 00:15:37.90\00:15:40.74 That's the hard way. That's the hard way! 00:15:40.94\00:15:42.64 I'd rather just watch the news, right? No question. 00:15:42.84\00:15:45.14 Now in that news clip - speaking of news - 00:15:45.34\00:15:47.51 they also mention obesity. Ahh... yes. 00:15:47.71\00:15:51.68 That's kind of an easy one, right? It's an easy one. 00:15:51.88\00:15:53.55 We're designed for height and weight within optimal range. 00:15:53.95\00:15:58.35 OK. When we exceed that range 00:15:58.55\00:16:00.96 our joints take the brunt of that 'cause they have to 00:16:01.22\00:16:03.43 carry more weight than they're supposed to. 00:16:03.63\00:16:04.99 OK... this is heavy... this is heavy: 00:16:05.39\00:16:06.73 so you're telling me that genetically our DNA is 00:16:06.86\00:16:10.10 designed - there's that word again - designed to bear 00:16:10.30\00:16:13.90 a certain load. When we exceed it 00:16:14.10\00:16:16.87 we are putting too much stress? Yes. Oh boy. 00:16:17.07\00:16:21.88 Oh boy. We are carrying a load more than our body is designed 00:16:22.28\00:16:24.88 to carry. Now no matter what type of clothing they make 00:16:25.08\00:16:28.98 to fit and all that you are bearing too much weight 00:16:29.18\00:16:32.89 and you could have an arthritic condition. 00:16:33.09\00:16:35.72 Example: put a backpack on and stuff it with 20 pounds 00:16:35.92\00:16:39.36 of rocks and see what that feels like on your hips and knees 00:16:39.56\00:16:43.13 at the end of the day. If a person puts on 20 pounds 00:16:43.33\00:16:46.40 of weight, that's also being carried by the body. 00:16:46.60\00:16:49.70 This is kind of like what it's like for me when I'm going 00:16:50.84\00:16:52.91 through the airport with all my bags. Exactly. 00:16:53.11\00:16:54.88 OK. OK. Now what we're seeing as it relates to 00:16:55.08\00:16:58.95 obesity and weight, this is a lifestyle/diet issue. 00:16:59.15\00:17:03.62 This is sitting in front of the television... Yes. 00:17:03.82\00:17:05.59 This is eating certain foods and not to mention the foods. 00:17:05.79\00:17:09.32 In a previous broadcast in a previous program we talked 00:17:09.52\00:17:12.79 about how milk is not doing a body good but actually 00:17:12.99\00:17:16.77 affecting the bones. Yes? Yes. Talk about diet for just 00:17:16.97\00:17:20.80 a few moments before we switch to another segment. 00:17:21.00\00:17:23.61 Very simple: when we eat foods 00:17:23.81\00:17:27.08 that are not designed for our physiology, the way our body 00:17:27.28\00:17:30.65 is made... OK. We're designed to live in a garden. 00:17:30.85\00:17:34.18 That's according to Genesis, right? The Bible. 00:17:35.52\00:17:37.65 Genesis the first chapter. That's right. We're designed 00:17:37.85\00:17:39.25 to live in a garden. That's how our body is made. 00:17:39.45\00:17:41.72 Our physiology accommodates food from the garden. 00:17:41.92\00:17:44.93 If we take things out of its original state 00:17:45.86\00:17:48.73 and we alter them and then take them in, 00:17:49.13\00:17:52.20 we pay the consequences. As an example, 00:17:52.40\00:17:54.30 the garden does not have white sugar. 00:17:54.50\00:17:57.51 It does not have white flour, biscuits, and white bread 00:17:58.47\00:18:01.84 or white rice or white flour pasta. 00:18:02.14\00:18:04.38 These are all refined, right? They're refined 00:18:04.58\00:18:06.51 so they cause the body to become acid and therefore 00:18:06.72\00:18:09.68 they are pro inflammatory. They actually trigger inflammation. 00:18:09.88\00:18:13.72 Other foods - the flesh foods especially - 00:18:14.89\00:18:17.66 meats, fish, fowl... OK, hold on a second. 00:18:17.86\00:18:20.53 I really want to talk about that, but before we do that 00:18:20.73\00:18:23.67 I want us to see, because we're speaking about this but 00:18:23.97\00:18:27.54 I know someone at home is saying: "Wait a minute. 00:18:27.70\00:18:29.60 you know you guys have an unfair advantage. 00:18:29.80\00:18:32.24 What about what I have to say? " 00:18:32.54\00:18:34.31 So we're going to go with Sickness. We're going to see 00:18:34.51\00:18:36.28 what he's saying or what people are saying on the streets 00:18:36.48\00:18:39.05 about "Uncle Arthur. " Let's see what they have to say 00:18:39.25\00:18:42.02 then we'll come back and we'll see maybe what the 00:18:42.22\00:18:44.05 Word of God says and what God, who designed us, 00:18:44.25\00:18:47.26 what He says that we should eat from the garden. Yes. 00:18:47.46\00:18:50.79 Let's take a look. 00:18:50.99\00:18:52.33 Now there's somebody who I like to call a dear friend. 00:18:53.86\00:18:57.83 OK. His name is Arthur. Do you know Arthur? 00:18:58.03\00:19:01.44 No! Arthur-ritis. 00:19:01.64\00:19:03.87 Arthur? Oh, arthritis! 00:19:04.91\00:19:08.08 Pains in your hands and your joints. 00:19:08.28\00:19:10.08 You know anybody with arthritis? 00:19:10.28\00:19:11.85 Your mom... does she enjoy it? No! 00:19:12.25\00:19:14.42 She hates it. She's actually grouchy. 00:19:14.62\00:19:16.08 Grouchy. Gets on my nerves when it happens. 00:19:16.28\00:19:18.59 You need to give her a pep talk. Tell her: "Mama, 00:19:18.79\00:19:21.62 Arthur is your friend. " Is he really? 00:19:21.82\00:19:24.69 He is your friend. You should say: "Mama, 00:19:24.89\00:19:26.70 how do I get me some arthritis? " 00:19:26.90\00:19:29.66 No... I don't want that. 00:19:30.07\00:19:32.03 Yes you do! There's confusion on the streets... 00:19:32.23\00:19:34.64 we're trying to clear it up. 00:19:34.84\00:19:36.50 You got a little arthritis? A little something there. 00:19:36.71\00:19:39.54 How does that feel? It does not feel good. 00:19:39.74\00:19:41.21 Not good at all. Oh man, you're insulting Arthur. 00:19:41.41\00:19:43.91 He's in town. He might hear you! 00:19:44.11\00:19:46.01 He can leave town, man. I don't want no bump with that. 00:19:46.21\00:19:48.35 Yeah, arthritis. You call him Arthur or arthritis? 00:19:48.55\00:19:51.19 Either or. Either or? So you know Arthur? 00:19:51.39\00:19:53.36 This guy knows Arthur. 00:19:54.16\00:19:55.49 Crampin' up. What do you mean by that? 00:19:55.62\00:19:56.96 It's all the time in your hands. You move your hands 00:19:56.99\00:19:59.06 it's all stiff. Oh no, that's just Arthur 00:19:59.26\00:20:01.23 getting some exercise. You know, Arthur's in town this week. 00:20:01.43\00:20:04.43 Oh he is? I can send him to your place. 00:20:04.63\00:20:06.74 Free samples? Free samples. You know, he can hook up your 00:20:06.94\00:20:09.04 joints and make you feel just great. You know, some people 00:20:09.24\00:20:11.14 don't like Arthur-ritis but he is my friend. 00:20:11.34\00:20:14.44 Sure guy. I'll introduce him to you Mark. 00:20:14.64\00:20:16.14 Here we go. Back to you. 00:20:16.34\00:20:18.38 Well as we can see people do love their sugar 00:20:18.88\00:20:21.28 and all the different things that are causing these 00:20:21.48\00:20:23.55 inflammatory arthritic situations. Yes. 00:20:23.75\00:20:26.92 And you know, but here's my question: 00:20:27.12\00:20:28.86 what can we tell people that will help them to 00:20:29.72\00:20:32.99 to realize that chronic pain and lifestyle diseases 00:20:33.40\00:20:38.33 it's not a normal way of life. It's not something 00:20:38.53\00:20:40.77 that you just say: "Oh that's MY... " claiming it 00:20:40.97\00:20:44.57 as MY diabetes or MY arthritis in this case. 00:20:44.77\00:20:48.54 You know, I'm thinking of a scripture, doc, 00:20:48.84\00:20:50.75 that is in Proverbs chapter 16 and verse 24. 00:20:50.95\00:20:54.32 Speaks of bones. It says: "Pleasant words are 00:20:54.48\00:20:57.22 as a honeycomb... sweet to the soul 00:20:57.42\00:21:00.46 and health to the bones. " Amen. 00:21:00.66\00:21:03.59 So God wants us to have healthy bones. 00:21:03.79\00:21:07.10 And you were going to tell us about some of the things that 00:21:07.30\00:21:09.90 were in the Garden of Eden and the diet that God had 00:21:10.10\00:21:12.40 for this design that He fashioned and formed 00:21:12.60\00:21:15.80 that is best. And when we don't use that 00:21:16.10\00:21:18.34 we have inflammation. Exactly. Talk to us about that. 00:21:18.54\00:21:21.94 As I mentioned earlier, we're designed to live in a garden 00:21:22.44\00:21:24.85 and our bodies are designed to partake of the garden. 00:21:25.15\00:21:27.62 We put a seed in the ground and it comes up as something 00:21:28.02\00:21:30.09 edible. Have you ever tried planting a chicken? 00:21:30.29\00:21:33.22 It does not come up. OK. Or a cow. OK. 00:21:33.92\00:21:37.86 So hamburgers... Well somebody would say that doesn't mean 00:21:38.16\00:21:40.80 you're not supposed to eat it. It's not from the garden. 00:21:41.00\00:21:43.53 So when we try to eat something apart from the garden 00:21:43.93\00:21:46.63 or processed from the garden like for example 00:21:46.84\00:21:49.50 white flour products. Pasta, white flour pasta as an example, 00:21:50.51\00:21:54.58 or white rice. White sugar? White sugar. 00:21:54.78\00:21:56.85 Pastries, cakes, pies. 00:21:57.15\00:22:00.45 All of these kinds of things. So if I'm someone who has 00:22:00.75\00:22:03.12 arthritis - um-hmm - and I'm calling it my "Uncle Arthur" 00:22:03.32\00:22:07.12 and I've got knee pain and joint pain in my elbow 00:22:07.32\00:22:10.36 and back and all this you're telling? What we're telling them 00:22:10.56\00:22:13.26 is that if you're eating white refined sugar... 00:22:13.46\00:22:15.80 Now there are some sweeteners that they can use, 00:22:16.00\00:22:17.37 but white refined sugar, white flour - um-hmm - 00:22:17.57\00:22:20.04 different meats... Yes! Yes? 00:22:20.24\00:22:22.80 Then I'm going to have an inflamed painful life. 00:22:23.00\00:22:26.68 Yes. Coffee! I call coffee nothing more than 00:22:26.88\00:22:30.95 liquid sandpaper to the joints. 00:22:31.45\00:22:34.85 Liquid sandpaper? Yes! 00:22:35.05\00:22:37.12 Same thing with bad fats. 00:22:37.42\00:22:40.59 Any fat that's been fried is now carcinogenic and inflammatory. 00:22:40.79\00:22:45.29 Fried foods carcinogenic? That means they can lead to cancer - 00:22:45.69\00:22:49.36 yes - and it is going to cause the bones, the joints to hurt. 00:22:49.56\00:22:54.37 Yes. Same with animal fats. 00:22:54.57\00:22:56.57 Like what kinds of animals are we talking about? 00:22:56.77\00:22:58.64 Anything that breathes. 00:22:59.04\00:23:00.64 Anything that had a mama or a face. You've got it! 00:23:01.04\00:23:02.94 If it's got 4 legs and fur, let it keep on walking 00:23:03.14\00:23:05.75 'cause it has an acid in it called arachidonic acid. 00:23:07.38\00:23:10.12 Arachidonic acid? It's a fatty acid 00:23:10.49\00:23:13.22 in the lean muscle mass, not the marble you cut away - 00:23:13.42\00:23:16.16 um-hmm - that causes inflammation. 00:23:16.36\00:23:18.39 So even if I get... You know a lot of times people say: 00:23:18.79\00:23:21.13 "Well get a leaner cut. Cut away that like white meat. " 00:23:21.33\00:23:25.10 Right. "Get the... " What is it? "the breast of the chicken. " 00:23:25.30\00:23:29.60 Right? White meat? So this is less fat 00:23:29.90\00:23:33.41 but you're saying that it's even in the muscle of the chicken. 00:23:33.61\00:23:38.41 Yes. Even in eggs. It's in eggs? Yes. 00:23:38.61\00:23:40.75 Even in dairy like cheeses and milk and yogurt and ice cream. 00:23:40.95\00:23:45.35 It's found in all of that also that triggers inflammation. 00:23:45.65\00:23:48.96 Another issue is all the artificial foods. 00:23:49.56\00:23:53.56 Artificial sweeteners; artificial flavors and colors 00:23:53.76\00:23:58.30 and dyes. They not only cause inflammation of joints 00:23:58.50\00:24:00.97 they cause inflammation of the brain. 00:24:01.17\00:24:02.80 MSG... another one of what are called free glutamates. 00:24:03.20\00:24:07.41 Yeah. It's a class of chemicals that causes brain inflammation 00:24:07.61\00:24:11.65 like nutritional yeast for example. 00:24:12.05\00:24:14.35 So these are things that are in peoples' diets... 00:24:14.55\00:24:17.49 All your oils - heavy oils - especially what are called 00:24:17.89\00:24:21.26 the industrial oils: corn, cotton seeds, 00:24:21.46\00:24:24.56 soy, canola... And especially when you're frying them. 00:24:24.76\00:24:28.13 I tell you: we could go on and on and on, but - yes - 00:24:28.33\00:24:31.90 I tell you we have... We have to do another program and 00:24:32.10\00:24:35.27 deal with some more of these issues because 00:24:35.47\00:24:37.44 this isn't enough time to really share all the things that people 00:24:37.64\00:24:41.04 are having to deal with with these lifestyle issues. 00:24:41.24\00:24:44.51 OK... so we have to wrap it up. You know, here's the point: 00:24:44.71\00:24:49.32 you want to make sure that as our good doctor has shared 00:24:49.72\00:24:54.02 with us, you need to be eating foods that come close 00:24:54.22\00:24:57.49 to the hand of God or have come from the hand of God 00:24:57.89\00:25:01.86 as we like to say. We're talking about your fresh fruits and 00:25:02.06\00:25:05.83 vegetables. We don't eat enough of those. 00:25:06.03\00:25:07.57 We need to do more of that. And how about water? 00:25:07.77\00:25:10.71 Drinking more water. You need fluid in the joints 00:25:10.91\00:25:13.38 to actually make sure that you are not having an inflamed 00:25:13.58\00:25:17.01 situation. So a lot of us are preferring to drink 00:25:17.21\00:25:19.75 sodas instead of drinking water. 00:25:19.95\00:25:23.28 So the things that God has provided: these are the things 00:25:23.49\00:25:26.65 that are going to actually keep us healthy. 00:25:26.86\00:25:28.99 Now until next time we'll see you again here on 00:25:29.19\00:25:32.09 From Sickness to Health. 00:25:32.29\00:25:33.80 Now, here is my admonition to you: 00:25:34.10\00:25:36.70 stay healthy! 00:25:37.00\00:25:39.27 It's good to know that we don't have to embrace illness 00:25:43.94\00:25:47.28 as some close companion. 00:25:47.48\00:25:49.61 Once we make healthier lifestyle changes 00:25:49.91\00:25:52.68 then we can truly embrace that Friend who sticks closer 00:25:52.88\00:25:56.92 than a brother... namely Jesus Christ, our Friend 00:25:57.12\00:26:00.06 and Savior. You know, Rico, this program has taught me 00:26:00.26\00:26:02.89 a lot about true friendship. 00:26:03.09\00:26:05.69 Whoa! That is excellent. Are you serious? 00:26:05.89\00:26:08.13 Yeah! That I have many friends like Arthur 00:26:08.33\00:26:10.50 and frenemies like you. You know, let's be honest: 00:26:10.70\00:26:12.73 people aren't going to make the necessary lifestyle changes 00:26:12.93\00:26:15.50 to get rid of Arthur. They treat Arthur like a friend. 00:26:15.70\00:26:18.31 They give him what he wants; they feed him what he wants. 00:26:18.51\00:26:20.64 Well I have to say that's kind of deep. 00:26:21.88\00:26:24.95 And think about if Arthur was a real person. 00:26:25.15\00:26:27.18 He'd have 60 million friends in America alone! 00:26:27.48\00:26:31.29 If he was on Facebook and Twitter and Foursquare 00:26:31.59\00:26:34.32 he'd be a popular guy. All right, OK, OK, I get your point. 00:26:34.52\00:26:37.06 But listen: Arthur-ritis is a lifestyle disease 00:26:37.26\00:26:41.93 that can be controlled and even reversed. 00:26:42.33\00:26:45.03 You know, as seekers of truth and people desiring to be 00:26:45.23\00:26:49.47 healthier we can do much better. 00:26:49.67\00:26:51.44 We don't have to have these lifestyle diseases. 00:26:51.64\00:26:53.61 Let's do what is practical and simple. 00:26:53.81\00:26:56.04 Let's heed the Word. That's our program for today. 00:26:56.34\00:26:59.31 I'm Rico Hill... and I'm your friend, the blue guy. 00:26:59.51\00:27:02.42 Friend? Fine... whatever. Frenemy. 00:27:02.72\00:27:05.72 And as always I like to end with III John 2: 00:27:06.02\00:27:09.66 "Beloved, I wish above all things 00:27:09.96\00:27:12.39 that thou mayest prosper and be in health. " 00:27:12.59\00:27:15.83 Maranatha! 00:27:16.33\00:27:18.13
