So, you must ask the question,

iniquity spoken about here?

Where we can get a clue

which uses some
very interesting labels

to describe this
mystery of iniquity.

Let's take a
look and I'm quoting.

It says,

"Little by little,

at first in stealth and silence,

and then more openly as
it increased in strength

and gained control
of the minds of men,

"the mystery of iniquity"
00:03:28.87\00:03:30.21
carried forward its
deceptive and blasphemous work.

Almost imperceptibly
the customs of heathenism

found their way into
the Christian church."

Well, this
statement gives us a clue

that the mystery of
iniquity has something to do

with the customs of heathenism.

Now, let's read
a little further.

She says,

"The spirit of
compromise and conformity

was restrained for a time

by the fierce persecutions

So here you get another label,

the spirit of
compromise and conformity.

theories and traditions.

Under a cloak of
pretended Christianity,

Satan was insinuating
himself into the church

to corrupt their
faith and turn their minds

from the Word of truth.

Most of the
Christians at last consented

to lower their standard,

and the union was formed

between
Christianity and paganism.

Now here's another clue.

They consented to
lower their standard.

Although the
worship is a vital professed

to be converted and
united with the church,

they still clung
to their idolatry
00:05:19.08\00:05:21.98
only changing the objects
00:05:22.02\00:05:23.62
that they
worshiped to images of Jesus,

and even if Mary in the sense.
00:05:26.12\00:05:27.66
They simply changed
the labels on pagan idols.

The foul living of idolatry
that's bought into the church,
00:05:31.53\00:05:34.56
continued with by awful
work, unsound doctrines,
00:05:34.60\00:05:38.10
see this is right
idolaters' families
00:05:38.13\00:05:40.97
were incorporated
into her faith and worship.
00:05:41.00\00:05:44.74
And as the followers of
Christ United with her, ladies,
00:05:44.77\00:05:47.94
the Christian
religion became corrupted
00:05:47.98\00:05:50.25
and the church lost
her purity and power.
00:05:50.28\00:05:54.22
So we see another
clue that causes corruption
00:05:54.25\00:05:58.65
and a loss of power,
00:05:58.69\00:06:00.36
a loss of purity and power.
00:06:00.39\00:06:03.22
Now, if we put all
these labels together,

we get a very clear picture
of the mystery of iniquity.

We see that it involves at
least six of these factors.

Number one, the
customs of heathenism.
00:06:14.17\00:06:17.54
Number two,
compromise and conformity.
00:06:17.57\00:06:21.04
Number three, human
theories and traditions.
00:06:21.08\00:06:24.65
Number four, it
lowers standards.
00:06:24.68\00:06:27.75
Number five, it
causes corruption.
00:06:27.78\00:06:30.19
And number six,
00:06:30.22\00:06:31.55
it causes the loss
of purity and power.
00:06:31.59\00:06:36.36
So, we can see in
Paul's second letter
00:06:36.39\00:06:38.46
to the believers in Thessalonica
00:06:38.49\00:06:40.83
that he was showing them exactly
00:06:40.86\00:06:42.63
how the enemy of Christ
00:06:42.66\00:06:44.57
would deceitfully
work to gradually undermine
00:06:44.60\00:06:47.50
and overthrow their faiths.
00:06:47.54\00:06:50.61
Now, let's read verses 8 and
9 of 2 Thessalonians Chapter 2.
00:06:50.64\00:06:55.08
It says,
00:06:55.11\00:06:56.44
"And then shall
that wicked be revealed,
00:06:56.48\00:06:58.81
and the Lord shall consume
with the spirit of His mouth,
00:06:58.85\00:07:01.98
and shall destroy
with the brightness
00:07:02.02\00:07:03.72
of His coming:
00:07:03.75\00:07:05.55
Even him, whose coming
after the working of Satan
00:07:05.59\00:07:09.12
with all power and
signs and lying wonders."
00:07:09.16\00:07:14.43
So, Paul is saying
that in the falling away,
00:07:14.46\00:07:16.70
a power would arise
as an agent of Satan.
00:07:16.73\00:07:19.93
And this power
would use a combination
00:07:19.97\00:07:23.41
of the customs of heathenism,
compromise and conformity,
00:07:23.44\00:07:28.11
human theories and traditions,
00:07:28.14\00:07:30.08
to lower Christian standard
00:07:30.11\00:07:32.11
and cause
corruption of their faith,
00:07:32.15\00:07:34.25
and a loss of purity and power
to the followers of Christ.
00:07:34.28\00:07:38.42
And furthermore,
00:07:38.45\00:07:39.85
he would drive
this destructive process
00:07:39.89\00:07:42.42
by means of other powering
lies and deceitful delusion.
00:07:42.46\00:07:49.40
And Paul reveals even
more details when he says,
00:07:49.43\00:07:53.40
"And with all deceivableness
of unrighteousness
00:07:53.44\00:07:56.71
in them, that perish,
00:07:56.74\00:07:58.64
because they received
not the love of the truth,
00:07:58.67\00:08:00.71
that they might be saved.
00:08:00.74\00:08:03.11
And for this cause
00:08:03.14\00:08:04.71
God shall send
them strong delusion,
00:08:04.75\00:08:09.25
that they should believe a lie."

And verse 12 says,

"That they all might be damned
who believed not the truth,

but had pleasure
in unrighteousness."

So, in these
verses Paul hold that

both a promise and a warning.

The promise is that

the only ones will be deceived

will be those that receive
not the love of the truth

that they might be saved.

And note here Paul's
keyword, the love of the truth.

He wasn't just
talking about those

who said that they do hear it,

they did believe it,

and they
professed to receive it,

but even in spite of
their avid profession,
00:08:46.29\00:08:48.56
they don't love her
enough to make their God
00:08:48.59\00:08:50.53
and way of life.
00:08:50.56\00:08:54.63
They just seemed to be satisfied
00:08:54.66\00:08:56.13
with some kind of
intellectual ascent,
00:08:56.16\00:08:58.27
without saying any kind of need
to reform their way of life.

So that they profess
to receive the truth,
00:09:03.20\00:09:05.57
but they didn't love it enough
00:09:05.61\00:09:06.94
to make it their
God and way of life.

That's what he's
talking about here.

Not just those who
to receive the truth.

And above itself warns
about this kind of attitude

in James 1:22-25.

And we're going to
have to look at that text.

And it says this,

of the word and not

deceiving your own self,

Paul's warning
in verse 11 and 12

makes it very clear

that if a person professes
to be a believer in God,

but chooses to be
carelessly ignorant of his word,

and I'm not talking about those
00:10:19.35\00:10:20.68
who don't have
access to the Bible,
00:10:20.72\00:10:22.08
or can't read it.
00:10:22.12\00:10:23.62
I'm talking about
those who do have the Bible,

but choose to
ignore or neglect it.

Or worse, misinterpret
to fit their own opinions.

If people do that,

then the result will be

that God will not protect
them from believing lies,

lies that lead
to strong delusion.

Delusion so bad that damnation
and lots of eternal life

plain that his warnings

are incredibly serious matter,

not only for the
believers in Thessalonica,

but I believe God intended it

also for all believers today.

becoming ensnared by them.

make the evidence so clear
even a child can understand it.

Let's look at them again.

Which I feel as a
student of God's Word,

it should be no surprise

that the final
conflict in human history

and therefore the
basis of all delusions

can be expected to
center around three issues.

Number one, who we worship,

number two, how we worship

three, when we worship.

Now, when God wrote
the Ten Commandments

with His finger on stone,

He even gave us a hint

that the issue of how we worship

would arise right
there in the Ten Commandments

Let's have a look at this one.
