Well, the Protestant Reformation

was one of the greatest
events in world history.

By the mid 16th century,

this movement had swept
right throughout Germany
00:03:18.79\00:03:21.66
and was
advancing to Switzerland,
00:03:21.70\00:03:24.10
England, France, Austria,
and many other parts of Europe

and the Roman Catholic
Church was seriously concerned
00:03:29.27\00:03:33.14
because at this time they
had the Muslims waging war
00:03:33.17\00:03:36.11
against some of
their territories
00:03:36.14\00:03:38.31
and they had the Protestants
fighting them from within
00:03:38.35\00:03:41.25
and they were in trouble.
00:03:41.28\00:03:43.65
Not only was the
church in trouble
00:03:43.69\00:03:45.62
but the devil
was also in trouble
00:03:45.65\00:03:48.32
because here was
a Christian movement
00:03:48.36\00:03:49.96
calling for a
return to the Bible

and the Bible only.

The devil knew fully well
00:03:55.00\00:03:56.33
that if the Bible
were taken seriously,

there would be a
return to the commandments,

a return to the truths,
00:04:01.10\00:04:02.67
and a return to Jesus

as the only source of salvation.

So what was the solution?

The Roman Church
conscious of the truth
00:04:09.24\00:04:12.01
of some of the
Protestant claims,

they wanted to have
its own reformation.

So it started what it
called the Catholic Reformation
00:04:16.79\00:04:21.06
but which later became known
00:04:21.09\00:04:22.79
as the great Counter Reformation
00:04:22.82\00:04:25.66
because of it's preoccupation
00:04:25.69\00:04:27.70
with cantering the
advances of the Protestants.

While the Catholic
Church met together
00:04:32.17\00:04:33.67
over a number of years

in the northern
Italian city of Trent
00:04:35.07\00:04:37.64
and this commission of cardinals

was given the task
of institutional reform

that addressed
contentious issues
00:04:43.75\00:04:45.88
such as corrupt bishops
and priests' indulgences

and other financial abuses.

They also
instituted two main instruments

to counter the
Protestant Reformation.

The first of
these was to duplicate

the Spanish inquisition

and establish it
more fully in Italy

and other parts of Europe.

This ruthless suppression
effectively branded those

who didn't agree with the church
00:05:10.47\00:05:12.44
as enemies of the State
00:05:12.47\00:05:15.44
and caused a huge number of them
00:05:15.48\00:05:17.05
to lose their lives.
00:05:17.08\00:05:19.41
More than 100
million, more than four times
00:05:19.45\00:05:22.95
the population of
Australia were murdered
00:05:22.98\00:05:26.89
because they didn't
agree with the church.
00:05:26.92\00:05:30.33
But one of the biggest
weaknesses of the church
00:05:30.36\00:05:32.26
of that period was
their religious order.

No one really
took them seriously.

So the second major
initiative of the council

was to establish a
number of new monastic orders

with improved
education, clear purposes,

and more
responsible administration

and among these,

the Jesuits were
the most outstanding.

Organizing their
order along military lines,

that were characterized
by careful selection,

rigorous training,
and iron discipline.

The pioneer for the
Jesuits was Ignatius Loyola.

He was a Spanish man

who had been physically disabled

by a cannonball during battle.

Loyola turned to
religion with great fervor

and fanaticism
00:06:18.11\00:06:20.18
and he was a brilliant visionary

who would let nothing
stand in the way of his dream

and that dream was to
wipe out Protestantism

and reestablish the
one Holy Catholic Church.

The Jesuits grew
from just 10 members
00:06:33.19\00:06:35.36
to over 15, 000

and they spanned the globe
within the first 100 years.

Their induction ceremony

and oath of allegiance

make for
frightening reading even today.

It clearly demonstrates
their absolute determination

to destroy Protestantism

and all its
systems of government

so not just the religion

but also the secular government

that's based on
Protestant principles.
