Hello, I'm Graham Weir. 00:00:26.29\00:00:29.16 And I want to welcome you to part 2 00:00:29.19\00:00:31.16 of The Reformation Revisited. 00:00:31.19\00:00:33.76 This is the six part dynamic series 00:00:33.80\00:00:36.10 dealing with the impact of the Protestant Reformation, 00:00:36.13\00:00:39.90 and its vital implications 00:00:39.93\00:00:41.50 for the survival of Christianity today. 00:00:41.54\00:00:45.07 And in this presentation, 00:00:45.11\00:00:46.44 we're going to take a deeper look 00:00:46.47\00:00:47.81 at some of the teachings of Martin Luther, 00:00:47.84\00:00:50.45 and the various denominations that rose after Martin Luther. 00:00:50.48\00:00:55.12 And we're also going to take a look 00:00:55.15\00:00:57.05 at how to tell the difference 00:00:57.09\00:00:58.42 between a true and a false revival. 00:00:58.45\00:01:02.59 So let us pray. 00:01:02.62\00:01:03.96 Loving Father in heaven, 00:01:09.00\00:01:10.33 we praise You and thank You once again 00:01:10.37\00:01:12.17 for the opportunity 00:01:12.20\00:01:14.00 to contemplate the great Protestant Reformation, 00:01:14.04\00:01:17.14 and the mighty heritage 00:01:17.17\00:01:18.51 that You've given us through that. 00:01:18.54\00:01:21.21 The journey from darkness into light 00:01:21.24\00:01:24.91 and the amount of light that arose piece by piece 00:01:24.95\00:01:29.35 with the Reformers that rose after Luther 00:01:29.38\00:01:33.46 that we might get an appreciation 00:01:33.49\00:01:35.79 for the emergence of Christianity 00:01:35.82\00:01:37.43 and want to discuss in these days. 00:01:37.46\00:01:40.73 So please bless us, 00:01:40.76\00:01:42.10 and once again give it to Easter here. 00:01:42.13\00:01:44.27 And I ask to see 00:01:44.30\00:01:46.17 and heart incline to do your work 00:01:46.20\00:01:49.67 because we are saying things in Jesus' precious name. 00:01:49.70\00:01:53.07 Amen. 00:01:53.11\00:01:54.44 Our text today is Proverbs 4:18. 00:01:57.81\00:02:02.88 And it says this, 00:02:02.92\00:02:04.25 "But the path of the just is as the shining light, 00:02:04.29\00:02:07.96 that shineth more and more unto the perfect day." 00:02:07.99\00:02:13.46 This tells us that the Christian journey 00:02:13.50\00:02:15.36 is the journey from darkness into light. 00:02:15.40\00:02:20.74 Have you ever walked out of a dark room 00:02:20.77\00:02:22.80 into blazing sunlight? 00:02:22.84\00:02:24.94 It really hurts, doesn't? 00:02:24.97\00:02:27.34 And we have to shield our eyes 00:02:27.38\00:02:30.18 until we have time to adjust to that brightness. 00:02:30.21\00:02:33.31 But for the same reason, 00:02:33.35\00:02:34.68 Christians emergent 00:02:34.72\00:02:36.05 from long years of spiritual darkness 00:02:36.08\00:02:38.19 were unable to receive the full light 00:02:38.22\00:02:41.26 that we have today until had time to adjust to it. 00:02:41.29\00:02:45.03 And this process took many years. 00:02:45.06\00:02:49.26 Well, after Luther refusal to attend at Worm, 00:02:49.30\00:02:52.40 he was on his journey home to Wittenberg. 00:02:52.43\00:02:55.37 When he was unexpectedly ambushed by a bandit men 00:02:55.40\00:02:59.24 who separated him from his companions 00:02:59.27\00:03:01.58 and galloped off into the North, 00:03:01.61\00:03:04.35 really disappear for many months. 00:03:04.38\00:03:07.08 And most people thought that Luther had been killed. 00:03:07.12\00:03:10.32 But what really happened 00:03:10.35\00:03:11.69 was that some of these worthy supporters 00:03:11.72\00:03:13.49 who didn't really trust 00:03:13.52\00:03:14.86 the king's pledge to keep himself, 00:03:14.89\00:03:17.36 arrange to have him taken captive 00:03:17.39\00:03:19.89 to Wartburg Castle 00:03:19.93\00:03:22.16 near the village of Eisenach in Germany. 00:03:22.20\00:03:24.63 You can go there today 00:03:24.67\00:03:26.00 and you can see where Luther was. 00:03:26.03\00:03:28.30 He was to be kept safe in isolation 00:03:28.34\00:03:31.21 where he could think and plan future direction 00:03:31.24\00:03:33.98 without anyone knowing really where he was. 00:03:34.01\00:03:37.38 I want you to think about that. 00:03:37.41\00:03:38.75 Sometimes when God allows what appears to be a setback, 00:03:38.78\00:03:42.62 He's really preparing for a great come back. 00:03:42.65\00:03:46.35 And this seeming setback for Martin Luther 00:03:46.39\00:03:48.72 was undoubtedly part of God's great plan 00:03:48.76\00:03:51.39 for the Protestant Reformation 00:03:51.43\00:03:53.53 because in this room, 00:03:53.56\00:03:55.83 Luther translated the entire New Testament 00:03:55.86\00:03:58.53 into the common language for the German people. 00:03:58.57\00:04:02.54 He had plenty of time to think and to study and to write. 00:04:02.57\00:04:07.11 Now, I'm going to show you a list 00:04:07.14\00:04:08.98 of some of the many long forgotten Bible principles 00:04:09.01\00:04:12.15 that he brought back into the lot. 00:04:12.18\00:04:15.15 The first one was holy clergy. 00:04:15.18\00:04:18.15 No more dishonesty or evil living. 00:04:18.19\00:04:21.86 He taught holy finances. 00:04:21.89\00:04:24.66 Money to be used properly, 00:04:24.69\00:04:26.16 not to be used to sustain evil lifestyles of corrupt priests. 00:04:26.19\00:04:31.23 He also taught that we should keep the commandments 00:04:31.27\00:04:34.04 to honor God, 00:04:34.07\00:04:35.57 not as a means of salvation, but to honor God. 00:04:35.60\00:04:40.64 He also taught that great principle 00:04:40.68\00:04:42.24 of the Protestant Reformation "Sola Scriptura". 00:04:42.28\00:04:45.41 It's the Bible and the Bible only as a foundation for faith. 00:04:45.45\00:04:51.02 He also taught the importance of studying 00:04:51.05\00:04:53.09 Bible Prophecy 00:04:53.12\00:04:54.56 in order to be prepared for the future, 00:04:54.59\00:04:57.63 in order to understand the future, 00:04:57.66\00:04:59.39 he knew we had to look to the past. 00:04:59.43\00:05:02.56 He also taught that 00:05:02.60\00:05:03.93 the Bible has more authority than the traditions of men. 00:05:03.97\00:05:07.44 And he taught that 00:05:07.47\00:05:08.80 great principle of justification by faith. 00:05:08.84\00:05:11.54 The belief that we are saved by God's grace alone, 00:05:11.57\00:05:15.28 not by any of our own good works. 00:05:15.31\00:05:18.75 He also taught that we need to confess directly to God, 00:05:18.78\00:05:22.42 not man. 00:05:22.45\00:05:24.25 It's not necessary to confess to a human priest 00:05:24.29\00:05:27.96 because he believed 00:05:27.99\00:05:29.32 the priest has no authority or ability to forgive sins. 00:05:29.36\00:05:34.33 But like the man emerging from a dark room 00:05:34.36\00:05:36.93 into a blinding light, 00:05:36.97\00:05:38.73 Luther was unable to see clearly 00:05:38.77\00:05:40.97 all the points of truths 00:05:41.00\00:05:42.77 that God wanted to reveal to the world. 00:05:42.80\00:05:46.37 In fact, he even believed 00:05:46.41\00:05:47.74 that some of the books of the Bible 00:05:47.78\00:05:49.14 really shouldn't be in it. 00:05:49.18\00:05:51.71 He wanted to tear out the books of Esther, 00:05:51.75\00:05:54.42 Hebrews, James, Jude, and then Revelation. 00:05:54.45\00:05:59.62 He wanted to throw them out. 00:05:59.65\00:06:01.02 He felt they didn't have any part with the Bible. 00:06:01.06\00:06:04.63 But God knew the darkness 00:06:04.66\00:06:06.13 that Luther and the people of his time were emerging from. 00:06:06.16\00:06:10.17 In fact, the most prolific woman writer 00:06:10.20\00:06:12.30 in American history, Ellen G. White 00:06:12.33\00:06:15.14 summed up the situation very well 00:06:15.17\00:06:17.87 in an article she titled, 00:06:17.91\00:06:19.41 "Martin Luther, his character and early life." 00:06:19.44\00:06:23.24 This was published in 1883, 00:06:23.28\00:06:25.48 and take a look at what she said. 00:06:25.51\00:06:28.65 She said, "Foremost among those 00:06:28.68\00:06:30.49 who were called for God to break the chains of peppery, 00:06:30.52\00:06:34.09 and lead the church 00:06:34.12\00:06:35.46 into the light of a purer faith, 00:06:35.49\00:06:37.56 stood Martin Luther. 00:06:37.59\00:06:39.96 Though, like others in his time, 00:06:40.00\00:06:41.56 he did not see every point of faith 00:06:41.60\00:06:44.20 as clearly as we say it today, 00:06:44.23\00:06:46.47 yet he earnestly desired to know the will of God, 00:06:46.50\00:06:49.80 and he joyfully received the truth 00:06:49.84\00:06:52.27 as it was made plain to his understanding." 00:06:52.31\00:06:56.24 Well, besides Luther, other reformers arose 00:06:56.28\00:06:59.21 and a Protestant Reformation spread 00:06:59.25\00:07:01.15 throughout Europe and England. 00:07:01.18\00:07:04.85 But after it became established in several countries 00:07:04.89\00:07:07.69 something strange began to happen. 00:07:07.72\00:07:12.13 The English reformers 00:07:12.16\00:07:14.20 while renounced the doctrines of Romanism 00:07:14.23\00:07:16.90 had still retained many of its forms. 00:07:16.93\00:07:20.17 So although they rejected the authority 00:07:20.20\00:07:22.20 and the creeds of Rome, 00:07:22.24\00:07:24.17 a lot of Roman Catholic customs and ceremonies were copied 00:07:24.21\00:07:29.01 into the worship practices of the Church of England. 00:07:29.04\00:07:32.88 And the inclusion of these Catholic customs 00:07:32.91\00:07:35.28 tended to narrow the gulf 00:07:35.32\00:07:36.85 which separated reformed churches from Rome. 00:07:36.89\00:07:40.59 Their leaders justified these compromises by saying 00:07:40.62\00:07:43.79 that it would make the Protestant faith 00:07:43.83\00:07:45.69 more attractive to Roman Catholics. 00:07:45.73\00:07:49.13 But the church members, 00:07:49.16\00:07:50.50 while the church members 00:07:50.53\00:07:51.87 who were lukewarm and willing to compromise, 00:07:51.90\00:07:54.17 this reason seemed valid. 00:07:54.20\00:07:56.97 But there was another class who weren't so easily deceived. 00:07:57.01\00:08:01.88 The fact that this custom 00:08:01.91\00:08:03.35 tended to bridge over the chasm 00:08:03.38\00:08:05.45 between Rome and the Reformation, 00:08:05.48\00:08:07.68 or to their minds a conclusive argument 00:08:07.72\00:08:10.32 against retaining them. 00:08:10.35\00:08:13.89 Well, as the Church of England continued to compromise 00:08:13.92\00:08:16.36 their principles of Protestantism. 00:08:16.39\00:08:18.89 Then like the Roman Church 00:08:18.93\00:08:20.26 before them that gained the ire of the state, 00:08:20.30\00:08:23.40 and they started doing falsely doctrines by civil law. 00:08:23.43\00:08:27.94 That's persecution 00:08:27.97\00:08:29.30 and public punishment of dissenters 00:08:29.34\00:08:31.91 again emerged making the Protestant faith 00:08:31.94\00:08:35.18 no better than the Roman Church that it came out of. 00:08:35.21\00:08:39.48 Well, to preserve their freedom of conscience, 00:08:39.51\00:08:41.88 many were forced to flee to Holland, 00:08:41.92\00:08:44.32 a republic that allowed people to worship God as they chose 00:08:44.35\00:08:48.16 without fear of persecution. 00:08:48.19\00:08:51.03 And from there, 00:08:51.06\00:08:52.39 God putted some of them across the sea to a land 00:08:52.43\00:08:55.46 where they might stand for themselves the state 00:08:55.50\00:08:58.20 and leave to their children 00:08:58.23\00:08:59.80 a precious heritage of religious liberty. 00:08:59.83\00:09:04.31 Well, to get an insight into what was happening 00:09:04.34\00:09:06.14 to the Christian faith at the time, 00:09:06.17\00:09:08.58 we can get a clue from this painting 00:09:08.61\00:09:10.65 in the rotunda 00:09:10.68\00:09:12.01 of the United States Capitol Building 00:09:12.05\00:09:13.98 in Washington DC. 00:09:14.02\00:09:15.95 I lived there for a couple of years, 00:09:15.98\00:09:17.39 and I saw this painting on the wall. 00:09:17.42\00:09:20.26 In this painting, 00:09:20.29\00:09:21.62 we see Pastor John Robinson 00:09:21.66\00:09:23.99 praying for the pilgrims on the ship, the Speedwell. 00:09:24.03\00:09:28.23 On the day of their departure from Delft Haven in Holland 00:09:28.26\00:09:31.47 for the New World on July 22nd, 1620. 00:09:31.50\00:09:36.91 What he said to the pilgrims gives us a clear picture 00:09:36.94\00:09:40.31 of the condition of Christianity at that time. 00:09:40.34\00:09:44.21 Let's take a look. 00:09:44.25\00:09:46.18 Note carefully what he had to say to them. 00:09:46.21\00:09:49.15 He said, "For my part, 00:09:49.18\00:09:50.52 I cannot sufficiently bewail 00:09:50.55\00:09:53.02 the conditions of the reformed churches, 00:09:53.05\00:09:56.29 who are come to a period in religion, 00:09:56.32\00:09:58.83 and will go at present no farther 00:09:58.86\00:10:00.86 than the instruments of their reformation. 00:10:00.90\00:10:04.13 The Lutherans cannot be drawn to go beyond what Luther saw, 00:10:04.17\00:10:08.20 and the Calvinist, you see, 00:10:08.24\00:10:09.80 they stick fast 00:10:09.84\00:10:11.17 where they were left by that great man of God, 00:10:11.21\00:10:13.51 who yet saw not all things. 00:10:13.54\00:10:16.54 This is the misery much to be lamented, 00:10:16.58\00:10:19.65 for though they were burning 00:10:19.68\00:10:21.02 and shining lights in their time, 00:10:21.05\00:10:23.05 yet they penetrated not into the whole counsel of God, 00:10:23.08\00:10:27.12 but were they now living, 00:10:27.16\00:10:28.49 would be as willing to embrace further light 00:10:28.52\00:10:31.39 as that which they first received." 00:10:31.43\00:10:34.66 He said, "Remember your church covenant, 00:10:34.70\00:10:36.67 in which you've agreed to walk in all the ways of the Lord, 00:10:36.70\00:10:40.10 made or to be made known unto you. 00:10:40.14\00:10:43.57 Remember your promise and covenant with God 00:10:43.61\00:10:46.17 and with one another, 00:10:46.21\00:10:47.54 to receive whatever light and truth 00:10:47.58\00:10:50.68 shall be made known to you from His written word, 00:10:50.71\00:10:53.88 but withal, he says, take heed, 00:10:53.92\00:10:56.95 I beseech you, I warned you, I plead with you, 00:10:56.99\00:11:00.66 what you receive for truth, 00:11:00.69\00:11:02.82 and compare it and weigh it 00:11:02.86\00:11:04.49 with other scriptures of truth before you accept it, 00:11:04.53\00:11:08.90 for he said it is not possible 00:11:08.93\00:11:10.43 that the Christian world 00:11:10.47\00:11:12.13 should come so lately out of that thick darkness, 00:11:12.17\00:11:15.34 and that full perfection of knowledge 00:11:15.37\00:11:18.24 should break forth at once." 00:11:18.27\00:11:21.84 So you can see from this history 00:11:21.88\00:11:23.31 that the problem with Christianity at that time 00:11:23.35\00:11:25.81 was the fact that each group 00:11:25.85\00:11:27.32 would not advance any faster or further 00:11:27.35\00:11:30.95 than their leaders went 00:11:30.99\00:11:32.32 in their understanding of truth. 00:11:32.35\00:11:35.22 And this is an error that we must avoid today 00:11:35.26\00:11:37.69 when every wind of doctrine blows. 00:11:37.73\00:11:41.06 It is absolutely essential for our growth as Christians. 00:11:41.10\00:11:43.90 And it doesn't matter 00:11:43.93\00:11:45.27 what denomination you belong to. 00:11:45.30\00:11:47.14 To study and examine for ourselves, 00:11:47.17\00:11:50.27 what profess it, takes you, say to us 00:11:50.31\00:11:53.38 and not just be satisfied 00:11:53.41\00:11:54.98 with accepting anything without question. 00:11:55.01\00:11:56.71 What do you say? 00:11:56.75\00:11:58.71 That should be the basis of the Protestant Reformation. 00:11:58.75\00:12:01.85 And this quote from Ellen White makes this very clear. 00:12:01.88\00:12:05.42 She said this, We must not think, 00:12:05.45\00:12:08.32 "Well, we have all the truth, 00:12:08.36\00:12:10.73 we understand the main pillars of our faith, 00:12:10.76\00:12:13.33 and we may rest on this knowledge. 00:12:13.36\00:12:16.03 The truth is an advancing truth, 00:12:16.06\00:12:18.27 and we must walk in increasing light." 00:12:18.30\00:12:21.77 And if you look back 00:12:21.80\00:12:23.14 at some of the main denominations 00:12:23.17\00:12:24.57 that arose from Luther's time to at our time, 00:12:24.61\00:12:27.68 we see the increasing light of truth emerging. 00:12:27.71\00:12:32.35 Let's take a closer look at some of the key doctrine 00:12:32.38\00:12:34.88 that emerged 00:12:34.92\00:12:36.25 during the climb out of the dark ages. 00:12:36.28\00:12:39.45 The Lutheran's restored the truth in Sola Scriptura, 00:12:39.49\00:12:43.12 the Bible and the Bible 00:12:43.16\00:12:44.49 only at the foundations for the faith, 00:12:44.53\00:12:47.36 and salvation by faith alone, not works. 00:12:47.40\00:12:52.03 The Anglicans restored the truth of no idols or images 00:12:52.07\00:12:56.50 and the worship of Christ, not Mary. 00:12:56.54\00:12:58.74 These are all essential points that we had to hear 00:12:58.77\00:13:01.88 to emerge out of darkness. 00:13:01.91\00:13:04.61 And the Presbyterians restored the truth 00:13:04.65\00:13:06.98 about practical Christianity, simple lifestyles, 00:13:07.02\00:13:10.42 and no formalism or displays in the churches. 00:13:10.45\00:13:14.52 And a good old Baptists restored the truths 00:13:14.56\00:13:16.69 about baptism by immersion, not sprinkling, 00:13:16.73\00:13:20.16 and that great principle of freedom and democracy, 00:13:20.20\00:13:23.26 the strict separation of church and state. 00:13:23.30\00:13:27.14 We have our freedom today, 00:13:27.17\00:13:29.54 our freedom to worship God 00:13:29.57\00:13:30.97 and freedom of conscience to the good old Baptist. 00:13:31.01\00:13:33.61 They started it, 00:13:33.64\00:13:34.98 and we can be grateful for that. 00:13:35.01\00:13:36.98 The Methodists restored 00:13:37.01\00:13:38.35 the truths about the need for obedience 00:13:38.38\00:13:40.35 to the Ten Commandments. 00:13:40.38\00:13:42.25 And look at this, as a response to salvation, 00:13:42.28\00:13:45.65 not the means of salvation, very important point. 00:13:45.69\00:13:50.39 This was the great principle that Martin Luther discovered 00:13:50.43\00:13:53.33 when God spoke to him 00:13:53.36\00:13:54.70 as he climbed those stairs on his knees. 00:13:54.73\00:13:58.03 And they also restored the truth of the importance 00:13:58.07\00:14:00.74 for standards of Christian behavior. 00:14:00.77\00:14:04.11 And the early Adventists, 00:14:04.14\00:14:05.47 I'm not talking about Seventh-day Adventists here. 00:14:05.51\00:14:07.71 They restored the truth about the second coming of Christ, 00:14:07.74\00:14:11.25 and the cleansing of the sanctuary. 00:14:11.28\00:14:14.15 I remember, they were the people 00:14:14.18\00:14:16.38 from many denominations 00:14:16.42\00:14:17.95 who suffered what we call today, 00:14:17.99\00:14:19.95 the great disappointment. 00:14:19.99\00:14:22.02 It's happened during the late 19th century. 00:14:22.06\00:14:24.89 I didn't understand until later that the scripture references 00:14:24.93\00:14:28.00 to the cleansing of the sanctuary 00:14:28.03\00:14:30.50 referred to the one in heaven, not the earth. 00:14:30.53\00:14:34.00 In those days, many people saw that the earth was a sanctuary. 00:14:34.04\00:14:37.27 And when the Bible said 00:14:37.31\00:14:38.64 that sanctuary was to be cleansed, 00:14:38.67\00:14:40.01 they thought it meant 00:14:40.04\00:14:41.38 the cleansing of the earth by fire. 00:14:41.41\00:14:42.74 It wasn't until later 00:14:42.78\00:14:44.25 that they discovered their mistake. 00:14:44.28\00:14:47.68 And finally, the Seventh-day Adventist arose 00:14:47.72\00:14:50.39 out of that great disappointment, 00:14:50.42\00:14:52.22 and they restored 00:14:52.25\00:14:53.59 the great truths about the Sabbath 00:14:53.62\00:14:55.12 being the seventh day of the week 00:14:55.16\00:14:56.49 and not the first day of the week. 00:14:56.52\00:14:58.56 And they also restored the truth 00:14:58.59\00:15:00.26 that identified the time of the investigative judgment. 00:15:00.30\00:15:04.63 And God's three final warning messages to the world. 00:15:04.67\00:15:10.47 Now something we need to notice 00:15:10.51\00:15:11.84 as we look at this story 00:15:11.87\00:15:13.94 is the fact that as the church fell away 00:15:13.98\00:15:16.08 into the Dark Ages, 00:15:16.11\00:15:18.51 they persuaded the state to enforce its doctrines 00:15:18.55\00:15:21.75 by civil law 00:15:21.78\00:15:24.52 was the result of millions of people 00:15:24.55\00:15:26.86 suffered great persecution and death. 00:15:26.89\00:15:30.79 Forcing some of them to risk a dangerous sea journey 00:15:30.83\00:15:33.93 to find a new land 00:15:33.96\00:15:35.60 where they could live without fear of persecution. 00:15:35.63\00:15:39.10 And these refugees eventually wrote a constitution 00:15:39.13\00:15:43.07 that ensured their new American states 00:15:43.10\00:15:45.57 would never make religious laws. 00:15:45.61\00:15:47.74 And I say eventually 00:15:47.78\00:15:49.11 because it didn't happen quickly. 00:15:49.14\00:15:51.48 Some of them even made great effort 00:15:51.51\00:15:53.42 to make their Protestant faith the law of the land. 00:15:53.45\00:15:57.05 And they too began to persecute those 00:15:57.09\00:15:59.42 who didn't agree with them. 00:15:59.45\00:16:02.06 In fact, religious freedom didn't really emerge 00:16:02.09\00:16:04.69 in the statute books 00:16:04.73\00:16:06.56 until the founder of the Rhode Island colony, 00:16:06.59\00:16:09.46 Roger Williams was the first person 00:16:09.50\00:16:11.63 in modern Christendom 00:16:11.67\00:16:13.44 to establish civil government 00:16:13.47\00:16:15.64 on the doctrine of liberty of conscience. 00:16:15.67\00:16:19.34 The public or the magistrates may decide he said, 00:16:19.37\00:16:23.28 what is due for man to man, 00:16:23.31\00:16:25.55 but when they attempt to prescribe 00:16:25.58\00:16:27.22 a man duties to God, they had a place. 00:16:27.25\00:16:30.85 And there could be no safety 00:16:30.89\00:16:32.72 because it is clear 00:16:32.75\00:16:34.09 that if the magistrate had the power, 00:16:34.12\00:16:35.99 he may decree one set of opinions 00:16:36.02\00:16:37.69 or beliefs today and another tomorrow. 00:16:37.73\00:16:40.86 And that has been done in England 00:16:40.90\00:16:42.46 by different kings and queens, 00:16:42.50\00:16:44.27 and by different popes and councils 00:16:44.30\00:16:46.07 in the Roman Church. 00:16:46.10\00:16:47.44 This is all happened before. 00:16:47.47\00:16:50.27 He said, "Eventually, 00:16:50.31\00:16:51.64 these great principles of freedom 00:16:51.67\00:16:53.48 were incorporated into the Federal Constitution 00:16:53.51\00:16:56.21 of the United States" with these words. 00:16:56.24\00:16:58.91 Note carefully what they were, 00:16:58.95\00:17:00.98 and every American will know what this is. 00:17:01.02\00:17:03.79 It says, "Congress shall make no law 00:17:03.82\00:17:06.69 respecting an establishment of religion, 00:17:06.72\00:17:09.56 or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, 00:17:09.59\00:17:13.19 or abridging the freedom of speech, 00:17:13.23\00:17:16.30 or of the press, 00:17:16.33\00:17:17.83 or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, 00:17:17.87\00:17:21.27 and to petition the government for redress of grievances." 00:17:21.30\00:17:26.47 So today we can give thanks to God 00:17:26.51\00:17:28.34 for this great principle of government. 00:17:28.38\00:17:30.58 And that grew out of the Protestant Reformation. 00:17:30.61\00:17:33.82 And I believe, 00:17:33.85\00:17:35.18 it's one of the biggest reasons for the freedoms of democracy 00:17:35.22\00:17:38.29 enjoyed by so many countries today. 00:17:38.32\00:17:40.19 What do you say? We can thank God for that. 00:17:40.22\00:17:43.99 And Australia among many other countries 00:17:44.03\00:17:46.73 sees the wisdom in such statements 00:17:46.76\00:17:49.43 and enshrined this principle in its constitution. 00:17:49.46\00:17:52.87 Let's take a look. 00:17:52.90\00:17:56.27 It says, "Religious freedom is safeguarded 00:17:56.30\00:17:59.54 by section 116 of the Australian Constitution 00:17:59.57\00:18:03.85 which prohibits the Federal government 00:18:03.88\00:18:05.51 from making any law establishing any religion, 00:18:05.55\00:18:09.98 imposing any religious observance, 00:18:10.02\00:18:12.89 or prohibiting the free exercise 00:18:12.92\00:18:14.86 of any religion. 00:18:14.89\00:18:16.96 Individuals are free to express a diversity views, 00:18:16.99\00:18:23.06 so long as they do not incite religious hatred." 00:18:23.10\00:18:29.04 And that clause was put in our constitution largely 00:18:29.07\00:18:32.64 because of the lobbying activities 00:18:32.67\00:18:35.14 of two Seventh-day Adventists. 00:18:35.18\00:18:38.11 It's important point to remember. 00:18:38.15\00:18:40.88 And it's also enshrined in the United Nations Charter 00:18:40.92\00:18:45.62 Declaration of Human Rights. 00:18:45.65\00:18:47.16 It says, 00:18:47.19\00:18:48.52 "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, 00:18:48.56\00:18:50.63 conscience and religion, 00:18:50.66\00:18:53.03 this right includes freedom 00:18:53.06\00:18:54.40 to change his religion or belief, 00:18:54.43\00:18:56.80 and freedom either alone or in community with others 00:18:56.83\00:19:00.44 and in public or private, 00:19:00.47\00:19:02.84 to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, 00:19:02.87\00:19:05.57 practice, worship and observance." 00:19:05.61\00:19:10.75 So, friends, we can thank God 00:19:10.78\00:19:12.45 for His hand on these early pioneers 00:19:12.48\00:19:14.75 who built the foundations of democracy on the principles 00:19:14.78\00:19:18.65 of the great Protestant Reformation. 00:19:18.69\00:19:21.56 And today we have an unparalleled window 00:19:21.59\00:19:24.53 of opportunity in democratic countries 00:19:24.56\00:19:27.66 to worship God in freedom of conscience 00:19:27.70\00:19:30.03 without fear of persecution. 00:19:30.07\00:19:31.43 That's great news, isn't it? Yes. 00:19:31.47\00:19:33.60 But the window is closing. 00:19:33.64\00:19:39.21 In fact, "We have come to a period of time in history 00:19:39.24\00:19:42.14 when the end of all things is fast approaching, 00:19:42.18\00:19:45.61 and many of God's people are not ready." 00:19:45.65\00:19:50.12 Ellen White studied it very clearly 00:19:50.15\00:19:51.75 when she said this, 00:19:51.79\00:19:53.82 "A revival of true godliness among us 00:19:53.86\00:19:57.66 is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs. 00:19:57.69\00:20:01.50 To seek this should be our first work." 00:20:01.53\00:20:06.87 So we asked the question, what is she talking about, 00:20:06.90\00:20:09.27 what is this revival 00:20:09.30\00:20:10.64 of godliness spoken about here? 00:20:10.67\00:20:13.31 How can we identify it or even tell if we have it? 00:20:13.34\00:20:17.78 Well, let's look more closely 00:20:17.81\00:20:19.15 at the dramatic effects of the Word of God 00:20:19.18\00:20:21.58 on people in the past. 00:20:21.62\00:20:24.35 Wherever the Word of God has been faithfully preached, 00:20:24.39\00:20:27.26 results have followed 00:20:27.29\00:20:28.62 that demonstrated its divine origin. 00:20:28.66\00:20:31.53 The Spirit of God accompanied the message of his servants 00:20:31.56\00:20:35.13 and the word with power. 00:20:35.16\00:20:37.80 Sinners felt their consciences quickened. 00:20:37.83\00:20:40.54 Deep conviction, 00:20:40.57\00:20:42.00 deep conviction took hold upon their minds and hearts. 00:20:42.04\00:20:45.91 They were convinced of sin, and of righteousness, 00:20:45.94\00:20:49.74 and of judgment to come. 00:20:49.78\00:20:52.91 They had a sense 00:20:52.95\00:20:54.28 of the righteousness of Jehovah, 00:20:54.32\00:20:56.28 and they felt the terror of appearing, 00:20:56.32\00:20:58.65 in their guilt and uncleanness, before the Searcher of hearts. 00:20:58.69\00:21:04.09 In anguish they cried out: 00:21:04.13\00:21:06.03 Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 00:21:06.06\00:21:10.90 As the cross of Calvary, 00:21:10.93\00:21:12.67 with its infinite sacrifice 00:21:12.70\00:21:14.47 for the sins of men, was revealed. 00:21:14.50\00:21:16.84 They realized that nothing 00:21:16.87\00:21:18.21 but the merits of Christ will be sufficient to atone 00:21:18.24\00:21:21.31 for their disobedient to his commandments. 00:21:21.34\00:21:23.85 This alone, they felt could reconcile man to God. 00:21:23.88\00:21:27.98 And with faith and humility, they accepted the Lamb of God, 00:21:28.02\00:21:31.22 that taketh away the sin of the world. 00:21:31.25\00:21:34.22 Through the blood of Jesus, 00:21:34.26\00:21:35.82 they had remission of sins that are past. 00:21:35.86\00:21:40.60 "And then so, brought forth, fruit meet for repentance," 00:21:40.63\00:21:43.77 as the Bible calls it. 00:21:43.80\00:21:45.93 They experienced dramatic changes 00:21:45.97\00:21:47.70 in their way of life. 00:21:47.74\00:21:49.44 Changes that demonstrated 00:21:49.47\00:21:50.91 that they're being filled with sorrow 00:21:50.94\00:21:52.47 for their past mistakes 00:21:52.51\00:21:54.58 and had somehow received a vision 00:21:54.61\00:21:57.15 of a bold new direction for their lives. 00:21:57.18\00:22:01.18 They believed, and they were baptized 00:22:01.22\00:22:03.89 and arose to walk in newness of life, 00:22:03.92\00:22:06.19 they were new creatures in Christ Jesus. 00:22:06.22\00:22:09.92 They no longer had any interest 00:22:09.96\00:22:11.53 in following their former worldly attraction. 00:22:11.56\00:22:14.60 But by the faith of the Son of God, 00:22:14.63\00:22:16.33 they now wanted to follow in His step 00:22:16.36\00:22:19.53 to reflect His character, 00:22:19.57\00:22:21.44 and to purify themselves even as Christ is pure. 00:22:21.47\00:22:26.07 The things they once hated, they're now loved. 00:22:26.11\00:22:28.61 The things that once loved, they're now hated. 00:22:28.64\00:22:32.35 The proud and self-assertive became meek and lowly of heart. 00:22:32.38\00:22:35.95 The vain and supercilious became serious and unobtrusive. 00:22:35.98\00:22:39.89 And the profligate became pure, and the drunken became sober. 00:22:39.92\00:22:46.59 The vain fashions of the world were laid aside. 00:22:46.63\00:22:49.90 "Christians sought not the outward adorning 00:22:49.93\00:22:52.20 or plaiting of the hair, 00:22:52.23\00:22:53.80 and of wearing of gold, 00:22:53.84\00:22:55.17 and putting on jewelry and apparel, 00:22:55.20\00:22:57.51 but the hidden man of the heart, 00:22:57.54\00:23:00.68 in that which is not corruptible, 00:23:00.71\00:23:02.94 even the ornament of a meek and a quiet spirit, 00:23:02.98\00:23:06.25 which is in the sight of God of great price." 00:23:06.28\00:23:09.82 And that was in 1 Peter 3:3 and 4. 00:23:09.85\00:23:15.36 Genuine true revivals brought 00:23:15.39\00:23:17.03 deep heart-searching and humility. 00:23:17.06\00:23:20.13 They were characterized by solemn, 00:23:20.16\00:23:22.10 earnest appeal to the sinner, 00:23:22.13\00:23:24.13 and by yearning compassion for the purchase 00:23:24.17\00:23:26.87 of the blood of Christ. 00:23:26.90\00:23:29.40 Men and women prayed and wrestled with God 00:23:29.44\00:23:32.87 for the salvation of souls. 00:23:32.91\00:23:35.21 And the fruits of such revivals were seen in souls 00:23:35.24\00:23:38.21 who shrank not at self-denial and sacrifice, 00:23:38.25\00:23:42.45 but they rejoiced that they were counted worthy 00:23:42.48\00:23:44.99 to suffer reproach for the sake of God. 00:23:45.02\00:23:49.02 Men beheld a transformation in the lives of those 00:23:49.06\00:23:51.59 who professed the name of Jesus. 00:23:51.63\00:23:54.06 The community was benefited by their influence. 00:23:54.10\00:23:57.33 They gathered with Christ, and they sowed to the Spirit, 00:23:57.37\00:24:00.50 to reap life everlasting. 00:24:00.54\00:24:03.74 And they made it very clear by the example 00:24:03.77\00:24:06.11 that there is no evidence of genuine repentance 00:24:06.14\00:24:09.28 unless it works reformation in the life. 00:24:09.31\00:24:12.91 What do you say? 00:24:12.95\00:24:14.42 No evidence of genuine repentance 00:24:14.45\00:24:16.69 unless it works a reformation in the love. 00:24:16.72\00:24:21.19 Now, I'm going to read you something, 00:24:21.22\00:24:22.56 and the commentary notes that I'm reading to you 00:24:22.59\00:24:25.49 were written in 1900. 00:24:25.53\00:24:27.96 So you might need to ask yourself the question, 00:24:28.00\00:24:30.87 are these comments still relevant today? 00:24:30.90\00:24:34.44 And please note also as I read through this material 00:24:34.47\00:24:37.01 which is bit heavier in places that it's not my purpose, 00:24:37.04\00:24:41.18 and it's not the purpose of this series 00:24:41.21\00:24:43.21 to put down any specific denomination or individual. 00:24:43.24\00:24:47.12 I'm simply reading the comments of historians 00:24:47.15\00:24:50.59 about religious movements or systems in general. 00:24:50.62\00:24:54.96 As you listen, you can decide for yourself 00:24:54.99\00:24:57.43 if they remain relevant in this age. 00:24:57.46\00:24:59.93 So let's continue, and I'm going to quote. 00:24:59.96\00:25:04.63 "But many of the revivals of modern times 00:25:04.67\00:25:07.14 have presented a marked contrast 00:25:07.17\00:25:09.10 to those exhibitions of divine grace 00:25:09.14\00:25:12.17 which in earlier days followed the labors of God's servants. 00:25:12.21\00:25:17.01 While it is true that large number of people 00:25:17.05\00:25:19.98 are attracted to these events, 00:25:20.02\00:25:22.45 and many of them profess to be converted 00:25:22.48\00:25:24.69 and join the movements, 00:25:24.72\00:25:27.12 nevertheless these outward signs 00:25:27.16\00:25:29.92 are insufficient evidence 00:25:29.96\00:25:32.03 that there has been a corresponding increase 00:25:32.06\00:25:34.33 of real spiritual life. 00:25:34.36\00:25:37.17 Often the flame of revival 00:25:37.20\00:25:38.80 which flares up for a time soon dies out, 00:25:38.83\00:25:43.17 leaving the darkness more dense than before. 00:25:43.20\00:25:46.84 So you can answer the question, is that still relevant today? 00:25:46.88\00:25:50.75 What do you say? Yes. 00:25:50.78\00:25:52.11 You think, it's irrelevant? 00:25:52.15\00:25:55.02 And we continue quoting, 00:25:55.05\00:25:56.99 "Popular revivals are too often 00:25:57.02\00:25:59.55 carried by appeal to the imagination, 00:25:59.59\00:26:02.86 by exciting the emotions, 00:26:02.89\00:26:05.13 by gratifying the love for what is new and startling. 00:26:05.16\00:26:09.30 Converts thus gained have little desire 00:26:09.33\00:26:11.93 to listen to Bible truths, 00:26:11.97\00:26:14.10 little interest 00:26:14.14\00:26:15.47 in the testimony of prophets and apostles. 00:26:15.50\00:26:18.91 Unless a religious service 00:26:18.94\00:26:20.28 has something of a sensational character, 00:26:20.31\00:26:23.24 it has no attractions for them. 00:26:23.28\00:26:26.21 A message which appeals to unimpassioned reason 00:26:26.25\00:26:28.98 awakens no response. 00:26:29.02\00:26:31.05 The plain warnings of God's word, 00:26:31.09\00:26:33.59 relating directly to their eternal interests, 00:26:33.62\00:26:36.16 are unheeded." 00:26:36.19\00:26:39.19 Is that still relevant today? 00:26:39.23\00:26:41.80 What do you say? Yes. 00:26:41.83\00:26:43.33 Yes. 00:26:43.37\00:26:45.57 I continue, 00:26:45.60\00:26:46.94 "With every truly converted soul 00:26:46.97\00:26:49.14 the relation to God and to eternal things 00:26:49.17\00:26:52.24 will be the great topic of life. 00:26:52.27\00:26:56.14 But where, in the popular churches of today, 00:26:56.18\00:26:58.91 is the spirit of consecration to God? 00:26:58.95\00:27:02.22 The converts do not renounce their pride 00:27:02.25\00:27:04.42 and love of the world. 00:27:04.45\00:27:06.39 They are no more willing to deny self, 00:27:06.42\00:27:09.02 to take up the cross, 00:27:09.06\00:27:10.39 and follow the meek and lowly Jesus, 00:27:10.43\00:27:13.03 than before their conversion. 00:27:13.06\00:27:15.50 Religion has become the sport of infidels and skeptics 00:27:15.53\00:27:20.54 because so many 00:27:20.57\00:27:21.90 who bear its name are ignorant of its principles. 00:27:21.94\00:27:27.14 Remember, the author was speaking generally 00:27:27.18\00:27:28.88 about certain types of religious movements. 00:27:28.91\00:27:32.15 Do you think your statement is still true today? 00:27:32.18\00:27:34.85 Yes. Yeah. 00:27:34.88\00:27:39.05 I'm continuing, 00:27:39.09\00:27:41.52 "The power of godliness 00:27:41.56\00:27:43.96 has well-nigh departed from many of the churches. 00:27:43.99\00:27:47.86 Personal display, lands and goods 00:27:47.90\00:27:50.87 and worldly occupations engross the mind, 00:27:50.90\00:27:55.10 and things of eternal interest 00:27:55.14\00:27:57.21 receive hardly a passing notice." 00:27:57.24\00:28:00.38 In those churches where Satan can bring 00:28:00.41\00:28:02.31 under his deceptive power, 00:28:02.34\00:28:04.88 he will make it appear 00:28:04.91\00:28:06.25 that God's special blessing is poured out. 00:28:06.28\00:28:10.05 There will be manifest 00:28:10.09\00:28:11.42 what is thought to be great religious interest. 00:28:11.45\00:28:14.79 Multitudes will exalt 00:28:14.82\00:28:16.19 that God is working marvelous thing for them. 00:28:16.22\00:28:19.29 When the work is that of another spirit. 00:28:19.33\00:28:22.93 "There is an emotional excitement, 00:28:22.96\00:28:25.53 a mingling of the truth with false 00:28:25.57\00:28:27.84 that is well adapted to mislead. 00:28:27.87\00:28:32.17 Yet none need be deceived. 00:28:32.21\00:28:35.04 In the light of God's Word, 00:28:35.08\00:28:36.54 it is not difficult to determine 00:28:36.58\00:28:38.51 the nature of false movements and revivals. 00:28:38.55\00:28:42.78 Wherever men neglect the testimony of the Bible, 00:28:42.82\00:28:46.82 turning away from those plain, 00:28:46.86\00:28:48.82 soul-testing truths 00:28:48.86\00:28:51.53 which require self-denial and disallowance of the world, 00:28:51.56\00:28:56.50 there we may be sure 00:28:56.53\00:28:57.93 that God blessing is not given." 00:28:57.97\00:29:01.70 Do you think that finding is still valid today? 00:29:01.74\00:29:04.81 Amen. 00:29:04.84\00:29:08.48 And by the rule 00:29:08.51\00:29:09.84 which Christ Himself has given, 00:29:09.88\00:29:11.95 in Matthew 7:16, 00:29:11.98\00:29:14.08 He says, 00:29:14.12\00:29:15.45 "Ye shall know them by their" what? 00:29:15.48\00:29:17.75 "By their fruits" meaning the evidence of their behavior. 00:29:17.79\00:29:22.42 And a lot of that 00:29:22.46\00:29:24.29 this commentary says 00:29:24.33\00:29:25.66 it is evident that these movements 00:29:25.69\00:29:27.76 are not the work of the Spirit of God. 00:29:27.80\00:29:31.67 In the truths of God's Word, 00:29:31.70\00:29:33.20 God has given to men a revelation of Himself, 00:29:33.23\00:29:37.11 and to all who accept them, 00:29:37.14\00:29:39.37 they are a shield against the deceptions of Satan. 00:29:39.41\00:29:44.45 And it is a neglect of these truths 00:29:44.48\00:29:46.45 that has opened the door to the evils 00:29:46.48\00:29:48.92 which are now becoming 00:29:48.95\00:29:50.29 so widespread in the religious world." 00:29:50.32\00:29:53.92 Is that true? 00:29:53.96\00:29:55.49 Yeah. Yeah. 00:29:55.52\00:29:57.46 I continue quoting, 00:29:57.49\00:29:59.69 "The nature and the importance of the law 00:29:59.73\00:30:01.76 of God had been, 00:30:01.80\00:30:04.07 to a great extent, lost sight of. 00:30:04.10\00:30:07.87 A wrong conception of the character, 00:30:07.90\00:30:11.31 the perpetuity, 00:30:11.34\00:30:13.41 and the obligation of the divine law 00:30:13.44\00:30:16.24 has led to errors in relation 00:30:16.28\00:30:18.41 to conversion and sanctification, 00:30:18.45\00:30:23.99 and has resulted in lowering 00:30:24.02\00:30:26.72 the standard of piety in the church. 00:30:26.76\00:30:30.03 He is to be found the secret 00:30:30.06\00:30:31.76 of the lack of the Spirit and power of God 00:30:31.79\00:30:34.13 in the revival to their time." 00:30:34.16\00:30:35.53 Does that make sense? Yes. 00:30:35.56\00:30:38.90 Let's try and summarize 00:30:38.93\00:30:40.27 this to make it more clear in today's language. 00:30:40.30\00:30:43.77 The author is saying here 00:30:43.81\00:30:45.14 that a misunderstanding of the divine law. 00:30:45.17\00:30:47.11 And we're talking about the Ten Commandments, 00:30:47.14\00:30:48.88 not the Old Testament Laws about sacrifices and offerings. 00:30:48.91\00:30:53.85 A misunderstanding of that divine law 00:30:53.88\00:30:56.58 has led to a misunderstanding 00:30:56.62\00:30:58.99 about the nature of Christian conversion 00:30:59.02\00:31:01.99 and the process of sanctification. 00:31:02.02\00:31:05.06 Let me repeat that. 00:31:05.09\00:31:06.96 A misunderstanding of the divine law, 00:31:07.00\00:31:10.00 the Ten Commandments, 00:31:10.03\00:31:11.37 the misunderstanding of it 00:31:11.40\00:31:13.80 has led to another misunderstanding 00:31:13.84\00:31:16.40 about the nature of Christian conversion 00:31:16.44\00:31:19.77 in the process of sanctification. 00:31:19.81\00:31:23.58 It's a very important point 00:31:23.61\00:31:25.88 because if a teaching or doctrine says 00:31:25.91\00:31:27.75 that the law was done away with at the cross, 00:31:27.78\00:31:30.79 then it will naturally result in a complete misunderstanding 00:31:30.82\00:31:34.26 about the true nature of conversion simply 00:31:34.29\00:31:37.19 because the Bible plainly says in Psalm 19 00:31:37.23\00:31:42.00 that the law of the Lord is perfect... 00:31:42.03\00:31:43.87 What is it doing? 00:31:43.90\00:31:45.53 Converting the soul. 00:31:45.57\00:31:48.84 Without the law, 00:31:48.87\00:31:50.21 men have no correct conception 00:31:50.24\00:31:51.84 of the purity and holiness of God, 00:31:51.87\00:31:54.94 or of their own guilt and uncleanness. 00:31:54.98\00:31:58.25 They have no true conviction of sin, 00:31:58.28\00:32:00.62 and they feel no need of repentance. 00:32:00.65\00:32:03.89 Not seeing their lost condition as violators of God's rule, 00:32:03.92\00:32:08.02 they do not realize 00:32:08.06\00:32:09.39 the need of the atoning blood of Christ. 00:32:09.42\00:32:12.36 The hope of salvation is accepted 00:32:12.39\00:32:15.03 without a radical change of heart 00:32:15.06\00:32:17.77 or reformation of life. 00:32:17.80\00:32:21.27 They may confess to being converted 00:32:21.30\00:32:23.27 but without a correct 00:32:23.30\00:32:24.64 understanding of God's law and the Ten Commandments, 00:32:24.67\00:32:27.21 that type of conversion will be little more 00:32:27.24\00:32:29.94 than an intellectual assent. 00:32:29.98\00:32:32.31 There will be little 00:32:32.35\00:32:33.68 if any type of change of character or behavior. 00:32:33.72\00:32:36.45 What do you say? Do you notice that? 00:32:36.48\00:32:41.76 I continue quoting, 00:32:41.79\00:32:43.79 "There is a spirit of self-exaltation 00:32:43.83\00:32:48.46 and disregard for the law of God 00:32:48.50\00:32:50.87 that mark it as foreign to the Bible. 00:32:50.90\00:32:54.74 Its advocates teach that sanctification 00:32:54.77\00:32:57.04 is an instant work, by which through faith alone, 00:32:57.07\00:33:01.41 they attain perfect holiness. 00:33:01.44\00:33:04.91 "Only believe," say they, and the blessing is yours. 00:33:04.95\00:33:09.32 No further effort on the part of the receiver 00:33:09.35\00:33:11.49 is supposed to be required. 00:33:11.52\00:33:14.29 But at the same time 00:33:14.32\00:33:15.66 they deny the authority of the law of God, 00:33:15.69\00:33:18.56 urging that they are released from obligation 00:33:18.59\00:33:21.50 to keep the commandment. 00:33:21.53\00:33:23.80 But is it possible to be holy without coming into harmony 00:33:23.83\00:33:27.60 with the principles 00:33:27.64\00:33:28.97 which express God's holy nature and will." 00:33:29.00\00:33:31.27 What do you say? No. 00:33:31.31\00:33:32.64 It's not possible. 00:33:32.67\00:33:36.34 "The testimony of the Word of God 00:33:36.38\00:33:38.21 is against this ensnaring doctrine of faith 00:33:38.25\00:33:41.88 without works. 00:33:41.92\00:33:44.59 It is not faith that claims the favor of heaven 00:33:44.62\00:33:47.29 without complying with the condition 00:33:47.32\00:33:49.09 upon which mercy is to be granted, 00:33:49.12\00:33:51.69 it is presumption." 00:33:51.73\00:33:54.40 And the Bible makes it very clear 00:33:54.43\00:33:55.80 in the Book of James 2:14-24. 00:33:55.83\00:33:59.03 Let's read it. 00:33:59.07\00:34:00.40 We'll open our Bibles, and we'll read it. 00:34:00.44\00:34:02.87 James 2:14-24, 00:34:02.90\00:34:09.81 and it says this, 00:34:09.84\00:34:11.38 "What doth it profit, my brethren, 00:34:11.41\00:34:13.48 though a man say he has faith, and have not works? 00:34:13.52\00:34:16.65 Can faith save him? 00:34:16.69\00:34:19.72 If a brother or sister be naked, 00:34:19.75\00:34:21.46 and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, 00:34:21.49\00:34:25.69 'Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled,' 00:34:25.73\00:34:29.66 notwithstanding ye give them not those things 00:34:29.70\00:34:31.80 which are needful to the body, what doth it profit? 00:34:31.83\00:34:36.44 Even so faith, if it hath not works, 00:34:36.47\00:34:39.51 is dead, being alone. 00:34:39.54\00:34:44.38 Yea, a man may say, 00:34:44.41\00:34:45.95 Thou hast faith, and I have works, 00:34:45.98\00:34:49.08 okay, show me thy faith without thy works, 00:34:49.12\00:34:51.79 and I will show thee my faith by my works. 00:34:51.82\00:34:56.16 Thou believest that there is one God, 00:34:56.19\00:34:58.39 thou doest well, the devils also believe, 00:34:58.43\00:35:01.66 and they tremble. 00:35:01.70\00:35:04.53 But wilt thou know, O vain man, 00:35:04.57\00:35:07.04 that faith without works is dead?" 00:35:07.07\00:35:10.71 And there is more good news 00:35:15.74\00:35:17.08 from the inspired visions of Ellen White 00:35:17.11\00:35:19.21 who said that God revealed to her 00:35:19.25\00:35:21.28 that in spite of all 00:35:21.32\00:35:22.68 that devil's deceptively engineered false doctrine 00:35:22.72\00:35:26.09 and a widespread corruption of truth faith and piety, 00:35:26.12\00:35:29.42 there are still genuine followers of Christ 00:35:29.46\00:35:32.49 in these deceived movements. 00:35:32.53\00:35:35.86 And she said this, 00:35:35.90\00:35:38.47 "Before the final visitation of God's judgment 00:35:38.50\00:35:40.77 upon the earth 00:35:40.80\00:35:42.14 there will be among the people of the Lord 00:35:42.17\00:35:43.87 such a revival of primitive godliness 00:35:43.91\00:35:46.84 as has not been witnessed since apostolic time. 00:35:46.88\00:35:50.41 The Spirit and the power of God will be poured out 00:35:50.45\00:35:54.22 upon His children. 00:35:54.25\00:35:55.58 And at that time many will separate themselves 00:35:55.62\00:35:58.02 from the churches, 00:35:58.05\00:35:59.45 from those churches in which the love of this world 00:35:59.49\00:36:02.39 has supplanted love for God and His word. 00:36:02.42\00:36:05.59 Many, both of ministries and people, 00:36:05.63\00:36:08.76 will gladly accept those great truths 00:36:08.80\00:36:11.27 which God has caused to be proclaimed at this time 00:36:11.30\00:36:14.70 to prepare our people for the Lord's second coming." 00:36:14.74\00:36:19.64 That's good news, isn't it? Yes. 00:36:19.67\00:36:21.34 Amen. 00:36:21.38\00:36:22.71 "In visions of the night, 00:36:22.74\00:36:24.08 she says, representations passed before me 00:36:24.11\00:36:26.58 of a great reformatory movement among God's people. 00:36:26.61\00:36:30.42 Many were praising God. 00:36:30.45\00:36:32.19 The sick were healed, 00:36:32.22\00:36:33.56 and other miracles were wrought. 00:36:33.59\00:36:35.46 Hundreds and thousands were seen visiting families, 00:36:35.49\00:36:38.59 and opening before them the word of God. 00:36:38.63\00:36:41.96 Hearts were convicted 00:36:42.00\00:36:43.50 by the power of the Holy Spirit, 00:36:43.53\00:36:45.67 and a spirit of genuine conversion 00:36:45.70\00:36:48.17 with manifest. 00:36:48.20\00:36:50.01 On every side doors were thrown 00:36:50.04\00:36:52.04 open to the proclamation of the truth. 00:36:52.07\00:36:54.61 The world seemed to be enlightened 00:36:54.64\00:36:56.51 with the heavenly influence. 00:36:56.54\00:36:58.48 Great blessings were received by the true 00:36:58.51\00:37:00.92 and humble people of God." 00:37:00.95\00:37:02.65 Aren't you looking forward to those days? 00:37:02.68\00:37:04.65 Yes. Amen. 00:37:04.69\00:37:06.29 Well, it's already happening. 00:37:06.32\00:37:08.19 Right now I want you to watch this video clip 00:37:08.22\00:37:10.83 from the world headquarters 00:37:10.86\00:37:12.46 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:37:12.49\00:37:14.30 The General Conference 00:37:25.01\00:37:26.34 is watching a new visionary bold initiative 00:37:26.37\00:37:31.48 called Total Member Involvement. 00:37:31.51\00:37:35.35 I believe with all my heart that Jesus is coming very soon. 00:37:35.38\00:37:39.79 Every church member can do something. 00:37:39.82\00:37:42.12 That's what Total Member Involvement is all about. 00:37:42.16\00:37:45.96 The Lord has placed on my heart a huge burden, 00:37:45.99\00:37:49.50 a burden to help each of us realize 00:37:49.53\00:37:52.90 that we must be totally involved 00:37:52.93\00:37:55.57 in God's last day message, 00:37:55.60\00:37:58.24 and that has to do with everything 00:37:58.27\00:38:00.34 from speaking the word to living the word 00:38:00.38\00:38:03.55 following Christ's example in everything, 00:38:03.58\00:38:06.88 helping people physically, 00:38:06.92\00:38:08.28 mentally, socially, and spiritually. 00:38:08.32\00:38:10.72 Thousands and thousands of lay people 00:38:14.89\00:38:16.76 are actively involved in praying for their neighbors 00:38:16.79\00:38:19.13 and giving Bible studies and distributing literature. 00:38:19.16\00:38:21.56 But whatever 00:38:21.60\00:38:22.93 we have done up until this point, 00:38:22.96\00:38:24.67 it is not yet Total Member Involvement. 00:38:24.70\00:38:27.67 One of the greatest challenges we face 00:38:27.70\00:38:29.74 is the devil's attempt to neutralize our mission, 00:38:29.77\00:38:35.24 endeavor and focus 00:38:35.28\00:38:37.05 because we don't have a relationship 00:38:37.08\00:38:39.65 with the Lord. 00:38:39.68\00:38:41.02 I'm reminded of what Ellen White said 00:38:41.05\00:38:42.52 in Desire of Ages, page 142, 00:38:42.55\00:38:45.35 "In order to develop a character like Christ, 00:38:45.39\00:38:48.09 we must work as He worked." 00:38:48.12\00:38:49.72 There is something about service, 00:38:49.76\00:38:51.53 something about ministry, 00:38:51.56\00:38:52.89 something about witnessing 00:38:52.93\00:38:54.60 that brings revival to our own hearts. 00:38:54.63\00:38:57.73 This is why I am so encouraged about Total Member Involvement. 00:38:57.77\00:39:01.74 There are so many examples all over the world 00:39:07.48\00:39:09.64 as to what God is doing through his members, 00:39:09.68\00:39:12.61 through those who are really committed to him. 00:39:12.65\00:39:15.02 There in Chitungwiza in Harare, Zimbabwe, 00:39:15.05\00:39:18.55 thousands of people involved in specific assignments 00:39:18.59\00:39:22.52 in reaching people with the precious message 00:39:22.56\00:39:25.76 whether they were visiting, 00:39:25.79\00:39:27.20 whether they were helping out in health expo, 00:39:27.23\00:39:30.80 whether they were doing Bible studies, 00:39:30.83\00:39:32.77 whether they were just welcoming people, 00:39:32.80\00:39:35.04 whatever it was, they were involved. 00:39:35.07\00:39:37.91 In Zimbabwe, itself, 00:39:37.94\00:39:39.37 there were over 918 meetings going on at the same time 00:39:39.41\00:39:43.08 all across that great country. 00:39:43.11\00:39:44.78 And in the end 30,000 people were baptized. 00:39:44.81\00:39:49.02 A beautiful example in San Antonio, Texas, 00:39:49.05\00:39:51.89 literally thousands of people involved 00:39:51.92\00:39:54.36 in reaching out to the community 00:39:54.39\00:39:56.29 of San Antonio. 00:39:56.32\00:39:57.69 Over 700 people were baptized. 00:39:57.73\00:40:01.40 One of the things that really amazed me 00:40:01.43\00:40:02.86 about San Antonio 00:40:02.90\00:40:04.23 in that year Best Pathway to Health 00:40:04.27\00:40:05.60 was that total involvement 00:40:05.63\00:40:06.97 1,500 people involved ministering to the needs 00:40:07.00\00:40:09.57 of over 6,100 individuals that came, 00:40:09.60\00:40:13.17 many of them stayed all night in line. 00:40:13.21\00:40:15.44 And as I watched what God did, it was amazing. 00:40:15.48\00:40:20.78 In Harare, Zimbabwe over 30,000 people 00:40:20.82\00:40:24.15 were affected through this special outreach 00:40:24.19\00:40:27.42 which God says is the right arm of the gospel. 00:40:27.46\00:40:31.39 One can praise the Lord and say, "Wow! 00:40:35.76\00:40:37.37 That's great. 00:40:37.40\00:40:38.73 It happened over there, 00:40:38.77\00:40:40.10 but what am I gonna do in my little place?" 00:40:40.14\00:40:41.87 What about the difficult parts of the world? 00:40:41.90\00:40:44.34 What about postmodern culture? 00:40:44.37\00:40:46.78 I know, there's some places are more difficult than others. 00:40:46.81\00:40:49.94 But if you don't believe that you can win people 00:40:49.98\00:40:53.55 for Christ in that setting, you won't win anybody. 00:40:53.58\00:40:57.39 I want to tell you the Lord has a job 00:40:57.42\00:40:59.65 for all of us. 00:40:59.69\00:41:01.02 And God is going to bless you 00:41:01.06\00:41:03.02 regardless of how small the operation or how large. 00:41:03.06\00:41:07.43 Doing something gives God an avenue to bless. 00:41:07.46\00:41:12.33 The real factor is your commitment to the Lord 00:41:12.37\00:41:16.71 and to following Christ's method alone. 00:41:16.74\00:41:21.68 How can I as a church member 00:41:21.71\00:41:23.11 become involved in Total Member Involvement? 00:41:23.14\00:41:25.85 The first thing that, I think, 00:41:25.88\00:41:27.22 is significantly important 00:41:27.25\00:41:28.58 is to get on your knees and begin to pray, and say, 00:41:28.62\00:41:30.89 "Lord, I am consecrating myself to you. 00:41:30.92\00:41:33.42 I'm giving myself to you. 00:41:33.46\00:41:35.62 What do you want me to do? 00:41:35.66\00:41:37.43 Whatever it is, 00:41:37.46\00:41:38.79 whether it's to be an intercessor in prayer 00:41:38.83\00:41:40.73 and concentrate on a prayer ministry, 00:41:40.76\00:41:43.23 whether it is actively involved in health ministry, 00:41:43.26\00:41:45.90 whether it's literature ministry, 00:41:45.93\00:41:47.84 whether it's children's ministry, 00:41:47.87\00:41:50.47 whether it's Bible study ministry of preaching." 00:41:50.51\00:41:53.68 I just feel an overwhelming burden 00:41:53.71\00:41:55.98 that all of us need to be involved. 00:41:56.01\00:41:58.81 Everyone has a job that the Lord can provide. 00:41:58.85\00:42:03.28 Everyone can be a missionary for Jesus, 00:42:03.32\00:42:06.72 no matter whether 00:42:06.76\00:42:08.09 you're in a sophisticated society 00:42:08.12\00:42:10.39 or in a simple setting, God can use each of us. 00:42:10.43\00:42:17.20 Jesus has given us a Great Commission to go, 00:42:17.23\00:42:19.70 and preach, and teach, and baptize. 00:42:19.73\00:42:21.30 The Commission is to you personally, 00:42:21.34\00:42:23.30 it's to me, no matter who you are. 00:42:23.34\00:42:25.51 When you get on your knees, and say, Jesus, 00:42:25.54\00:42:27.31 "I want to be an active witness for you. 00:42:27.34\00:42:29.54 I want to be involved, totally, 00:42:29.58\00:42:31.45 completely involved with the entire church 00:42:31.48\00:42:34.65 in Total Member Involved." 00:42:34.68\00:42:36.65 Good news? Yes. 00:42:45.59\00:42:47.43 You want to be involved? Yes. 00:42:47.46\00:42:49.16 There is no greater activity beside the kingdom of heaven, 00:42:49.20\00:42:51.87 what do you say? 00:42:51.90\00:42:53.23 Yes. 00:42:53.27\00:42:54.60 It's a great tool to help people 00:42:54.64\00:42:56.50 come to a knowledge of the truth. 00:42:56.54\00:42:59.04 And there are multitudes of sincere people 00:42:59.07\00:43:01.01 have been living and transgressing of God's law, 00:43:01.04\00:43:04.41 without realizing that the forbearance 00:43:04.45\00:43:06.35 and patience of God is about to end. 00:43:06.38\00:43:09.75 And now he and mercy is calling them to obey 00:43:09.78\00:43:12.82 its sacred precepts before it is too late. 00:43:12.85\00:43:17.33 The message must be given that all he will put away 00:43:17.36\00:43:20.23 their sins by repentance toward God and faith in Christ 00:43:20.26\00:43:24.33 are offered pardoned. 00:43:24.37\00:43:28.10 Friend, Jesus is about to return, 00:43:28.14\00:43:31.01 do you believe it?
