Amen. Good. 00:01:12.93\00:01:14.90 Just, you know, as a quick introduction, 00:01:14.94\00:01:16.54 we have with us Brandon Dent, 00:01:16.57\00:01:18.61 which is a retired business executive, 00:01:18.64\00:01:21.54 worked for a number of years in the automotive industry. 00:01:21.58\00:01:24.25 And now you're also, you own your own company. 00:01:24.28\00:01:25.85 That's right. 00:01:25.88\00:01:27.22 And it's good to have you, Brandon. 00:01:27.28\00:01:28.62 Dr. King, a pleasure as always, you are a clinical psychologist 00:01:28.65\00:01:32.59 as I understand, and you've also been 00:01:32.62\00:01:34.72 a trained theologian at one point as well. 00:01:34.76\00:01:37.59 And we are thankful for you. 00:01:37.63\00:01:39.96 Muta as well, praise God for you being here. 00:01:40.00\00:01:42.90 I know you work with a ministry called Elijah 3. 00:01:42.93\00:01:44.67 Yes. 00:01:44.70\00:01:46.03 That specifically deals 00:01:46.07\00:01:47.40 with ministering to urban youth. 00:01:47.47\00:01:48.80 Yes. 00:01:48.84\00:01:50.17 So we are looking definitely for insight today. 00:01:50.21\00:01:52.07 Young people face major challenges 00:01:52.11\00:01:56.11 in our world today. 00:01:56.14\00:01:57.61 As we talk about ministering to them, myself, 00:01:57.65\00:01:59.55 you know, I've pastored young people 00:01:59.58\00:02:01.35 for several years now. 00:02:01.38\00:02:03.18 And I know, I know the challenges 00:02:03.22\00:02:05.85 that they're facing right now. 00:02:05.89\00:02:07.89 Let's begin to have a dialogue, trying to, kind of, you know, 00:02:07.92\00:02:11.53 talking about these challenges, and then ways that 00:02:11.56\00:02:13.90 we can effectively minister to them today. 00:02:13.93\00:02:17.23 Dr. King, kind of give us a historical perspective, 00:02:17.27\00:02:20.04 if you would as relates to, you know, 00:02:20.10\00:02:22.50 ministering to urban youth 00:02:22.54\00:02:23.87 and the challenges that they face today. 00:02:23.91\00:02:25.24 Certainly. 00:02:25.27\00:02:26.64 You know, times have changed, the challenges that we had 00:02:26.68\00:02:29.24 growing up are very different today. 00:02:29.28\00:02:32.85 We're in the age of social media, 00:02:32.88\00:02:37.05 where there's all kinds of temptations 00:02:37.09\00:02:41.59 and devices that are easily accessible. 00:02:41.62\00:02:46.46 There's a whole issue of peer pressure of... 00:02:46.49\00:02:49.46 If youth has a peer group who's trying to get him or her 00:02:49.50\00:02:54.37 to pursue a certain course of action, 00:02:54.40\00:02:58.01 and that can be extremely stressful. 00:02:58.04\00:03:00.78 There's substance abuse issues. 00:03:00.81\00:03:03.14 I'm going to talk a little about that 00:03:03.18\00:03:04.65 later on in this broadcast, 00:03:04.68\00:03:06.48 just a variety of substances that are easily 00:03:06.51\00:03:10.79 and readily available. 00:03:10.82\00:03:13.12 There's issues with depression, 00:03:13.15\00:03:16.66 there's issues with bullying, 00:03:16.73\00:03:19.79 suicide, homicide, 00:03:19.83\00:03:22.33 and the list goes on and on and on. 00:03:22.36\00:03:25.37 It's never ending, it's never ending. 00:03:25.40\00:03:27.50 Absolutely. 00:03:27.54\00:03:28.87 We recognize that the same devil 00:03:28.90\00:03:31.17 that was there from the fall, 00:03:31.21\00:03:34.54 where Adam and Eve fell, is still here today. 00:03:34.58\00:03:36.95 And it seems that 00:03:37.01\00:03:38.35 he is doubling his efforts today, 00:03:38.38\00:03:39.91 especially as it relates to young people. 00:03:39.98\00:03:43.35 You know, even though they're facing 00:03:43.39\00:03:45.75 these challenges of magnitude proportions, 00:03:45.79\00:03:48.86 you know, we believe that 00:03:48.89\00:03:50.39 they still can be reached by the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:03:50.43\00:03:55.06 So let's kind of, you know, talk a little bit about, again, 00:03:55.10\00:03:58.50 these issues for instance, let's take for instance, music. 00:03:58.53\00:04:01.97 Let's start there, music is, 00:04:02.00\00:04:04.31 it moves you and, Brandon, I know you know this. 00:04:04.34\00:04:06.81 You have a musical background yourself. 00:04:06.88\00:04:08.78 Music has the power to move people, 00:04:08.81\00:04:11.41 you know, in a positive way, and also in a negative way. 00:04:11.45\00:04:15.02 How do you see music affecting our young people today? 00:04:15.05\00:04:19.32 Well, you said it, 00:04:19.35\00:04:21.22 music is a very powerful medium. 00:04:21.26\00:04:23.53 Once you are in its presence, 00:04:23.56\00:04:26.46 you really have no power to resist its impact. 00:04:26.49\00:04:31.67 And that's a very important piece. 00:04:31.70\00:04:34.64 When you are in its presence, 00:04:34.67\00:04:36.97 it does not ask your permission to enter your soul. 00:04:37.01\00:04:40.64 For example, I have been in the grocery store. 00:04:40.68\00:04:44.65 Now the Lord knows I'm only there to shop. 00:04:44.68\00:04:47.42 And they'll play some song from way back 00:04:47.48\00:04:49.95 when I was dating and while I was young, 00:04:49.98\00:04:53.56 and it will immediately bring back to the surface 00:04:53.62\00:04:57.39 and I'm sure Dr. King, can appreciate that 00:04:57.43\00:05:01.50 and why that happens. 00:05:01.53\00:05:02.93 I don't know why, he's the doctor but, 00:05:02.96\00:05:04.73 what I do know is it brings back 00:05:04.77\00:05:06.23 all those emotions, all those feelings 00:05:06.27\00:05:08.94 from way back then. 00:05:08.97\00:05:10.31 I don't even want to go there. 00:05:10.34\00:05:12.91 I have not asked to go there. 00:05:12.94\00:05:15.01 But because of the power of this medium, 00:05:15.04\00:05:17.08 it has taken me there without my consent. 00:05:17.15\00:05:19.58 So it's very powerful and the devil knows that. 00:05:19.61\00:05:22.18 As a matter of fact, 00:05:22.22\00:05:24.02 he was in charge of music in heaven, right? 00:05:24.09\00:05:26.89 So we know that he has a mastery there, 00:05:26.96\00:05:29.09 he knows its power, its impact. 00:05:29.12\00:05:31.29 It was designed to take heavenly beings 00:05:31.33\00:05:34.10 and raise their level of appreciation for God. 00:05:34.10\00:05:37.60 That's how powerful it is. 00:05:37.63\00:05:38.97 And so he uses that to take our young people 00:05:39.00\00:05:43.67 and take their emotions to places that 00:05:43.71\00:05:46.31 they're not supposed to go. 00:05:46.34\00:05:47.84 Yeah, that's powerful that you connected music 00:05:47.88\00:05:50.11 with the devil, especially Lucifer, 00:05:50.15\00:05:52.28 as it says in Isaiah 14, and Ezekiel 28, 00:05:52.31\00:05:55.32 because the Bible uses this word 00:05:55.35\00:05:57.99 for tabrets in the Hebrew that kind of gives you 00:05:58.02\00:06:01.29 the inclination that there was a pipe, 00:06:01.32\00:06:04.36 there were pipes, 00:06:04.39\00:06:05.73 little pipes built inside of the devil, 00:06:05.76\00:06:08.70 where he had this great musical ability 00:06:08.73\00:06:11.63 from the Hebrew sense of the word. 00:06:11.67\00:06:13.77 So we recognize that "Yes, 00:06:13.84\00:06:15.17 he's involved in music in this generation as well." 00:06:15.20\00:06:19.01 See, and you're absolutely right. 00:06:19.04\00:06:22.78 The subconscious mind is extremely powerful 00:06:22.81\00:06:26.75 as Brandon quite rightly said. 00:06:26.82\00:06:30.62 The power of music doesn't need your permission. 00:06:30.69\00:06:35.49 You know, there is a reason 00:06:35.52\00:06:36.86 why the advertising slots for the commercials 00:06:36.93\00:06:41.23 for the upcoming Superbowl are sold out. 00:06:41.26\00:06:44.83 So businesses are paying $3 million 00:06:44.87\00:06:50.71 for a 30 second slot just to get their message out 00:06:50.77\00:06:55.44 because they know if you're watching the game, 00:06:55.48\00:06:58.68 and you're tuned in, and you're focused, 00:06:58.71\00:07:02.25 all they need is 30 seconds 00:07:02.28\00:07:04.45 just to slip that message in there. 00:07:04.49\00:07:07.42 And music has also utilized that exact same avenue, 00:07:07.49\00:07:12.56 which is why a number of the rap stars 00:07:12.59\00:07:17.57 and rockers are so successful. 00:07:17.60\00:07:20.34 My son loves Kanye. 00:07:20.37\00:07:22.17 Okay. You know, he idolizes him. 00:07:22.20\00:07:24.81 He talks about his ability to put words together 00:07:24.84\00:07:28.71 in such a poetic and theatrical manner. 00:07:28.74\00:07:33.01 And he refers to him as a genius. 00:07:33.05\00:07:36.22 And I actually listened to one of his songs 00:07:36.25\00:07:38.59 and I had to blush. 00:07:38.62\00:07:40.29 A lot of that stuff 00:07:40.36\00:07:41.69 is going past the conscious mind, 00:07:41.72\00:07:44.33 into the subconscious mind. 00:07:44.36\00:07:46.43 Muta, can I talk about, from your perspective, 00:07:46.46\00:07:48.80 especially as you minister to urban young people 00:07:48.83\00:07:51.17 in your sphere of ministry, you know, 00:07:51.20\00:07:53.50 what has music done in their minds, 00:07:53.54\00:07:56.50 or in their own personal lives. 00:07:56.54\00:07:57.91 You know, especially, has it build them up, 00:07:57.94\00:07:59.61 or tore them down, 00:07:59.64\00:08:01.14 what's happening as related to music? 00:08:01.18\00:08:04.71 In our last episode, I believe, previous episodes, 00:08:04.75\00:08:09.32 we talked about mentorship, 00:08:09.35\00:08:11.42 and how there is a lack of men 00:08:11.45\00:08:14.76 in the lives of our young people. 00:08:14.79\00:08:17.26 Well, in one regard, yes, in another regard, no, 00:08:17.29\00:08:22.50 because now music has taken over as the mentor. 00:08:22.53\00:08:27.04 So a lot of these artists, 00:08:27.07\00:08:28.40 they may not be physically present 00:08:28.44\00:08:30.41 with these young people, but they're emotionally, 00:08:30.44\00:08:34.31 spiritually, and audially present with them. 00:08:34.34\00:08:39.35 And they're listening to them every day, 00:08:39.38\00:08:42.78 and they're being indoctrinated every day. 00:08:42.82\00:08:46.02 And so as they grow, the music now becomes 00:08:46.05\00:08:50.23 their teacher, their leader, their pastor. 00:08:50.26\00:08:53.53 Wow, wow, their pastor. 00:08:53.60\00:08:56.06 That definitely reaches. 00:08:56.10\00:08:57.43 You know, I'll never forget, you know, when I was... 00:08:57.47\00:08:58.90 My first year of college 00:08:58.93\00:09:00.37 before I really took the call to go 00:09:00.40\00:09:02.07 into ministry, I was at Tuskegee University 00:09:02.10\00:09:05.01 in Tuskegee, Alabama, and in the cafeteria, 00:09:05.04\00:09:08.18 they were playing, you know, this thing called the box 00:09:08.21\00:09:11.25 where it was music videos all day from breakfast, 00:09:11.28\00:09:13.95 you know, lunch, dinner, 00:09:13.98\00:09:15.52 they were playing music videos all day long. 00:09:15.55\00:09:17.82 And I'll never forget, you know, me sitting there, 00:09:17.85\00:09:20.39 not consciously remembering the words to the song. 00:09:20.42\00:09:24.53 But I was walking to class one day, 00:09:24.56\00:09:26.26 and I can hear in the faint distance 00:09:26.29\00:09:28.13 across the campus, you know, this beat, 00:09:28.16\00:09:30.20 this song that 00:09:30.27\00:09:31.60 I had not tried to learn the music 00:09:31.63\00:09:34.14 or the words to. 00:09:34.17\00:09:35.50 And as I'm walking across campus, 00:09:35.54\00:09:36.87 it's like, wow, I'm able to recite, 00:09:36.91\00:09:39.87 I mean, I shocked myself. 00:09:39.91\00:09:41.24 I was like, "Where did that come from? 00:09:41.28\00:09:42.61 How did I know the words to this song 00:09:42.64\00:09:45.25 when I did not sit down and say, 'Okay, 00:09:45.28\00:09:47.42 I'm gonna learn this song.'" 00:09:47.45\00:09:50.02 Music is so powerful. 00:09:50.09\00:09:52.29 And I think that, you know, 00:09:52.32\00:09:53.66 we need to give a word of caution 00:09:53.69\00:09:56.19 to our young people 00:09:56.22\00:09:58.16 that you don't want music to take you places 00:09:58.19\00:10:00.96 where God would not be pleased. 00:10:00.96\00:10:03.33 And I think that's absolutely critical for us to understand. 00:10:03.37\00:10:06.03 What are some of the other avenues 00:10:06.07\00:10:08.04 that are affecting our young people today? 00:10:08.07\00:10:12.37 Well, Dr. King really gave us 00:10:12.41\00:10:14.94 a pretty good introduction on some of those areas, 00:10:14.98\00:10:19.05 things like drug abuse, sex and sexuality. 00:10:19.08\00:10:23.28 Also, self-mutilation I call it, 00:10:23.35\00:10:27.52 and that's piercings, tattoos. 00:10:27.56\00:10:30.29 Devil gets them thinking that 00:10:30.33\00:10:31.66 it's cool to deface the image of God. 00:10:31.69\00:10:33.96 They're really into that, kids are getting into cutting. 00:10:34.00\00:10:37.20 And I don't, 00:10:37.23\00:10:38.57 I can't even begin to understand 00:10:38.60\00:10:40.00 why and how that happens 00:10:40.07\00:10:41.90 so it just doesn't seem pleasurable to me. 00:10:41.94\00:10:44.14 I'm glad we have a doctor on the program here, 00:10:44.17\00:10:48.34 who maybe can shed some light on that. 00:10:48.38\00:10:50.58 Because I've heard that from other parents too. 00:10:50.61\00:10:51.95 Yeah. 00:10:51.98\00:10:53.31 So when parents don't even understand 00:10:53.35\00:10:55.12 how or why someone would get into that, 00:10:55.15\00:10:57.55 they become unsuspecting. 00:10:57.59\00:11:00.06 Because if it doesn't make sense to me, 00:11:00.09\00:11:02.26 I just assume it won't make sense to my child. 00:11:02.29\00:11:04.83 So perhaps we could benefit 00:11:04.86\00:11:06.70 from better understanding that subject. 00:11:06.73\00:11:08.03 Yeah, yeah. 00:11:08.06\00:11:09.40 Sure, cutting is an activity that a number of youth 00:11:09.43\00:11:14.50 are engaged in for various reasons. 00:11:14.54\00:11:17.47 And for those who are watching, you know, 00:11:17.51\00:11:18.91 cutting is essentially using any sharp instrument, 00:11:18.94\00:11:22.68 it could be a knife, it could be a blade, 00:11:22.71\00:11:25.88 but anything that can create an incision 00:11:25.91\00:11:29.85 that will produce blood, as well as elicit pain. 00:11:29.88\00:11:34.12 That is the definition of cutting, 00:11:34.16\00:11:36.32 and a number of youth are doing that as I mentioned, 00:11:36.36\00:11:39.56 for various reasons, some of them are very angry. 00:11:39.59\00:11:42.10 And this is sort of a reaction to dealing with your anger. 00:11:42.13\00:11:47.57 If I can take the anger out on myself, 00:11:47.60\00:11:51.84 if I can feel it, then I can release it. 00:11:51.87\00:11:55.88 Also, it's their way of controlling the pain 00:11:55.91\00:12:00.32 that has been inflicted. 00:12:00.35\00:12:02.18 You know, that is within their control 00:12:02.22\00:12:04.32 to inflict their own pain on themselves. 00:12:04.35\00:12:06.96 And in a weird way, 00:12:06.99\00:12:09.76 it provides a measure of relief to them. 00:12:09.79\00:12:12.76 Wow. 00:12:12.79\00:12:14.10 The cutting is not a suicidal attempt, 00:12:14.20\00:12:17.27 although sometimes it can end up 00:12:17.33\00:12:20.94 as a suicidal attempt. 00:12:20.97\00:12:22.30 Wow. 00:12:22.34\00:12:23.67 And, you know, parents need to be aware, 00:12:23.71\00:12:26.11 they need to look at their teenagers, 00:12:26.14\00:12:28.18 look at their bodies, because quite often 00:12:28.21\00:12:30.98 those kids are suffering in silence 00:12:31.01\00:12:32.85 and parents don't know. 00:12:32.88\00:12:34.82 That's amazing. 00:12:34.85\00:12:37.59 I mean, these vices, and these things 00:12:37.62\00:12:40.56 that our young people are facing, 00:12:40.62\00:12:41.99 they seem challenging. 00:12:42.02\00:12:44.66 I mean, almost, to the point where it's like, 00:12:44.69\00:12:48.83 will they submit themselves to God 00:12:48.86\00:12:51.57 and allow God to take full control 00:12:51.60\00:12:53.97 or will they allow society to mold and to shape them? 00:12:54.00\00:12:57.44 You look at, for instance, basketball, 00:12:57.47\00:12:59.71 I mean, it seems as 00:12:59.74\00:13:01.38 if I can't tell you what year it happened but, 00:13:01.41\00:13:04.25 you know, every basketball player 00:13:04.28\00:13:06.21 with the exception of a few, you know, 00:13:06.25\00:13:08.02 they're tattooed up, you know, on their neck, you know, 00:13:08.05\00:13:11.62 across their face, you know, all over. 00:13:11.65\00:13:14.06 And, you know, in the church, 00:13:14.09\00:13:15.56 especially our young people are seeing these things, 00:13:15.59\00:13:18.06 they're being exposed to it. 00:13:18.09\00:13:19.43 And now, they have now almost a proclivity to say, 00:13:19.46\00:13:22.13 "You know what, 00:13:22.16\00:13:23.53 I want to experience this as well, 00:13:23.57\00:13:24.90 I want to test, you know, the same things 00:13:24.93\00:13:27.14 that's been exposed to in the world." 00:13:27.20\00:13:29.17 And I think, especially as parents, 00:13:29.20\00:13:31.51 and as we minister to black men, 00:13:31.54\00:13:33.94 we need to make a stand, you know, 00:13:33.98\00:13:36.04 and show them really God's way and show them, you know, 00:13:36.08\00:13:39.78 the best way to walk every step of the way. 00:13:39.81\00:13:42.02 I want to talk a little bit about a substance abuse. 00:13:42.05\00:13:45.09 Now I know that this is prevalent, 00:13:45.12\00:13:48.52 extremely prevalent in our world today. 00:13:48.56\00:13:51.63 And, Dr. King, I know you have some very practical things 00:13:51.66\00:13:54.83 you can share with our viewers today 00:13:54.86\00:13:56.43 as related to substance abuse. 00:13:56.46\00:13:58.23 But, you know, even before I do that, 00:13:58.27\00:14:01.50 marijuana is a frequently abused drug. 00:14:01.54\00:14:05.37 And we still don't understand or still haven't been 00:14:05.41\00:14:09.28 able to quantify the number of chemicals 00:14:09.31\00:14:12.51 that are contained in marijuana. 00:14:12.55\00:14:15.32 And I am oftentimes amazed 00:14:15.35\00:14:18.52 when I hear people campaigning for the legality of marijuana, 00:14:18.55\00:14:24.33 when I know that we don't even understand 00:14:24.36\00:14:26.56 some of the chemical compositions in marijuana. 00:14:26.59\00:14:30.23 Alcohol as we know is frequently abused. 00:14:30.27\00:14:32.77 Prescription medication is readily available 00:14:32.80\00:14:36.60 in most medicine cabinets, 00:14:36.67\00:14:38.87 and parents need to be aware of that. 00:14:38.91\00:14:42.28 However, it seemed as though 00:14:42.31\00:14:43.65 we've entered into a new age of substances. 00:14:43.71\00:14:47.85 Some of them are actually sold at gas stations, 00:14:47.88\00:14:51.69 smoke shops, 00:14:51.72\00:14:53.25 and some of them are even contained 00:14:53.32\00:14:55.22 in our own household. 00:14:55.26\00:14:56.89 Let me give you a couple of examples. 00:14:56.93\00:15:01.60 You know what this is, right? 00:15:01.63\00:15:03.87 All right. This is just a dust remover. 00:15:03.90\00:15:07.67 And this is actually used to clean the keyboard 00:15:07.70\00:15:10.14 of a computer. 00:15:10.21\00:15:12.04 However, if you were to ingest this, 00:15:12.07\00:15:16.58 if you were to spray this up your nostril, 00:15:16.61\00:15:19.41 it goes immediately to your brain. 00:15:19.45\00:15:22.32 I actually had a client who did that. 00:15:22.35\00:15:25.12 And within seconds, he passed out. 00:15:25.15\00:15:28.09 Wow. And had to be hospitalized. 00:15:28.12\00:15:31.96 So parents need to be aware that this could be well, 00:15:31.99\00:15:35.50 actually, this is called huffing. 00:15:35.53\00:15:38.00 So this is a deadly device. Wow. 00:15:38.03\00:15:41.74 And what's amazing about this one is that, 00:15:45.44\00:15:48.01 I mean, this is just a spray that 00:15:48.04\00:15:50.51 you use to clean off your computer. 00:15:50.55\00:15:52.35 Absolutely. Just clean your keyboard off? 00:15:52.38\00:15:53.78 Innocuous. Pretty innocuous. 00:15:53.82\00:15:55.48 So most households have this spray? 00:15:55.52\00:15:58.95 Absolutely. Okay. 00:15:58.99\00:16:00.39 Absolutely. Okay. 00:16:00.42\00:16:01.76 And again, you do that, you can easily pass out. 00:16:01.79\00:16:04.56 Okay. Okay. 00:16:04.59\00:16:08.30 Here we go. 00:16:08.33\00:16:10.10 Energy brownie. Say it again now. 00:16:10.17\00:16:13.20 Energy brownie. Energy brownie. 00:16:13.23\00:16:15.17 And this was purchased at a local gas station. 00:16:15.20\00:16:19.24 It's not illegal, it's easily obtainable. 00:16:19.27\00:16:23.35 And if you're driving, 00:16:23.38\00:16:24.98 or you have to drive long distances, 00:16:25.01\00:16:27.22 it makes perfect sense, at least what one will think, 00:16:27.25\00:16:30.89 to stop at a gas station, 00:16:30.92\00:16:32.25 which we oftentimes do, 00:16:32.29\00:16:33.96 and we're looking for something to pick me up, 00:16:33.99\00:16:36.73 to get me to go that extra mile. 00:16:36.76\00:16:39.29 And if you're not aware, 00:16:39.33\00:16:40.90 especially if you like chocolates, 00:16:40.93\00:16:42.66 a brownie, you can easily purchase this stuff. 00:16:42.70\00:16:46.23 But when you read the fine print, 00:16:46.27\00:16:48.47 you know, it contains amphetamine type properties. 00:16:48.50\00:16:53.38 And, you know, sort of a layman's explanation 00:16:53.44\00:16:57.51 to that is some of the same substances 00:16:57.55\00:17:00.75 that are in marijuana, and that are in crack cocaine. 00:17:00.78\00:17:05.52 And so by eating this, what it does, 00:17:05.55\00:17:08.26 it can increase your heart rate, 00:17:08.29\00:17:10.76 it can elevate your blood pressure, 00:17:10.79\00:17:13.16 and it can give you a jolt. 00:17:13.19\00:17:15.63 And this can make you go hours 00:17:15.66\00:17:17.87 and hours without feeling hungry. 00:17:17.90\00:17:20.87 Wow. But it is also deadly. 00:17:20.94\00:17:23.07 If you take enough of this, it can cause confusion, 00:17:23.10\00:17:27.28 disorientation, paranoia, and even death. 00:17:27.31\00:17:32.58 Very simple, but it can be very deadly. 00:17:32.61\00:17:35.35 Wow. Now let me ask you a question. 00:17:35.38\00:17:36.89 Because, I mean, parents are thinking right now 00:17:36.92\00:17:39.55 that, you know, my child goes to the gas station, 00:17:39.59\00:17:42.19 and they may mistake a brownie, you know, 00:17:42.22\00:17:45.63 a little Debbie brownie for this energy brownie. 00:17:45.66\00:17:48.20 You know, just not knowing, I don't know, just not knowing, 00:17:48.23\00:17:51.00 is this something that you have to be 00:17:51.03\00:17:52.60 18 or 21 and older to purchase? 00:17:52.63\00:17:54.00 No. No, no, you can purchase this. 00:17:54.04\00:17:56.81 But if you read the fine print very carefully, 00:17:56.87\00:17:59.47 it says, "For adults only. 00:17:59.51\00:18:03.14 Not suitable for children." 00:18:03.18\00:18:06.41 But it's in the fine print. 00:18:06.45\00:18:08.02 But children can still buy it? Absolutely. 00:18:08.05\00:18:10.02 Wow. And it's perfectly legal. 00:18:10.05\00:18:11.82 Wow. 00:18:11.85\00:18:13.19 If you see the little image on there, too. 00:18:13.22\00:18:15.02 It's a cartoon, something that my son 00:18:15.06\00:18:17.76 would walk in and say, "Daddy, I want that." 00:18:17.79\00:18:20.86 So who are they marketing it to? 00:18:20.93\00:18:22.43 Wow. Absolutely. 00:18:22.46\00:18:23.80 Wow. Absolutely. 00:18:23.87\00:18:25.37 That's serious. 00:18:25.40\00:18:28.60 And then I've got a couple of good ones here for you. 00:18:28.64\00:18:31.94 This is the famous K2 00:18:31.97\00:18:35.84 and it looks like a little herbal seed. 00:18:35.88\00:18:40.92 We have found ways 00:18:44.09\00:18:45.42 of snorting this, crushing it up, 00:18:45.45\00:18:49.66 putting it on food, putting it in drink. 00:18:49.69\00:18:53.63 And contained in here... 00:18:53.70\00:18:55.96 This is what is called synthetic marijuana. 00:18:56.00\00:19:01.00 It is loaded with amphetamines. 00:19:01.04\00:19:04.27 Some of the same substances 00:19:04.34\00:19:05.67 that are contained in crack cocaine 00:19:05.71\00:19:08.74 and also marijuana. 00:19:08.78\00:19:11.11 And so if you snort enough of this or ingest it, 00:19:11.15\00:19:16.05 it can lead to confusion, 00:19:16.08\00:19:18.59 disorientation, and again, death. 00:19:18.62\00:19:22.52 This is highly addictive. 00:19:22.56\00:19:24.86 And what that simply means 00:19:24.89\00:19:26.23 is that once you get that first hit, 00:19:26.26\00:19:29.33 it feels so good. 00:19:29.36\00:19:31.13 There's almost no substitute for it. 00:19:31.17\00:19:34.77 But the catch is that you need to use more 00:19:34.80\00:19:38.54 to get the same effect. 00:19:38.57\00:19:40.38 And this is also sold online and in the local smoke shop. 00:19:40.41\00:19:45.15 It's called K2. 00:19:45.18\00:19:47.22 And then this is potpourri. 00:19:47.25\00:19:50.42 Potpourri. Potpourri. 00:19:50.49\00:19:51.82 Like house potpourri? But not household potpourri. 00:19:51.85\00:19:54.19 Okay. You may think it is. 00:19:54.26\00:19:56.59 It has the name and it looks very similar 00:19:56.62\00:19:59.56 and that's the catch. 00:19:59.59\00:20:00.93 So you may be tempted to purchase this and use it, 00:20:00.96\00:20:05.40 you know, to burn sort of like sweet smelling 00:20:05.43\00:20:08.24 incense in your bedroom at night. 00:20:08.27\00:20:11.17 But it is very addictive, and also produces 00:20:11.21\00:20:15.21 some of the same effects as K2 00:20:15.24\00:20:18.65 and contained in this little vial 00:20:18.68\00:20:21.48 also is another variation of K2. 00:20:21.52\00:20:27.02 The cost of this is $13.99, $14. 00:20:27.06\00:20:31.23 So once again, you can crush it, 00:20:31.26\00:20:33.80 you can snort it, you can drink it, 00:20:33.86\00:20:36.60 you can ingest it, 00:20:36.63\00:20:38.20 but you need more and more and more to enjoy the same high 00:20:38.23\00:20:43.77 that you get after the very first hit. 00:20:43.84\00:20:46.61 In 2010, in one state Poison Control 00:20:46.64\00:20:52.11 received 236 calls. 00:20:52.15\00:20:55.85 Halfway through 2011, 00:20:55.88\00:20:58.72 they had already received 251 calls of people 00:20:58.75\00:21:02.96 who became disoriented after ingesting 00:21:02.99\00:21:06.83 or using one of these substances. 00:21:06.90\00:21:08.73 Wow, wow, wow. 00:21:08.76\00:21:12.47 Dr. King, I mean, I'm, I'm, I'm... 00:21:12.50\00:21:14.94 As I'm seeing like, I'm blown away, 00:21:14.97\00:21:17.41 because I'm thinking to myself that, 00:21:17.47\00:21:19.87 you know, a parent that does not know, 00:21:19.91\00:21:22.38 you know, these facts 00:21:22.41\00:21:23.75 that you just shared with us and they walk into a bedroom 00:21:23.81\00:21:26.05 and they see potpourri, and they think to themselves, 00:21:26.08\00:21:27.95 "Oh, well, good, my child is, you know, trying to clean, 00:21:27.98\00:21:30.75 you know, make their room smell better," you know, 00:21:30.79\00:21:33.36 they may just put on the facade, you know. 00:21:33.42\00:21:35.82 I'm almost troubled, 00:21:35.86\00:21:37.19 what do we do right, at this stage right now, 00:21:37.23\00:21:40.76 you know, to educate ourselves and to prevent, 00:21:40.80\00:21:44.80 you know, as best as possible our children 00:21:44.83\00:21:47.07 from going down this track? 00:21:47.10\00:21:48.94 You know, sort of look like 00:21:48.97\00:21:50.34 what I did with a group of teenagers. 00:21:50.37\00:21:53.07 I invited them over, 00:21:53.11\00:21:55.38 and just had a frank discussion with them about the products 00:21:55.41\00:21:58.68 that are available, 00:21:58.71\00:22:00.32 and how these different chemicals 00:22:00.35\00:22:03.15 can affect our brain functioning, 00:22:03.18\00:22:06.62 and can induce personality changes. 00:22:06.65\00:22:10.13 And just having a frank discussion with them, 00:22:10.16\00:22:12.66 because the more we try to hide, 00:22:12.69\00:22:15.10 or the more we try to deny, 00:22:15.13\00:22:17.37 the greater the problem becomes. 00:22:17.43\00:22:19.30 Okay. What do you say because... 00:22:19.33\00:22:22.84 For anyone that, you know, 00:22:22.87\00:22:24.34 is addicted to one of the things 00:22:24.37\00:22:26.68 that we've talked about so far, 00:22:26.74\00:22:28.08 whether it's music, whether it's peer pressure, 00:22:28.11\00:22:31.35 whether it's substance abuse or alcohol, you know, 00:22:31.38\00:22:34.32 we know the Bible says that we can do all things 00:22:34.35\00:22:36.89 through Christ who gives us strength. 00:22:36.95\00:22:38.69 But to the viewer that's watching right now, 00:22:38.72\00:22:40.56 what do we say to that viewer 00:22:40.62\00:22:42.52 who they know that their son or their daughter 00:22:42.56\00:22:45.49 is addicted to one of these drugs 00:22:45.53\00:22:48.23 or even has the proclivity to take these drugs as well, 00:22:48.26\00:22:51.77 or again, our music, 00:22:51.80\00:22:53.27 that's leading them away from God? 00:22:53.30\00:22:55.30 What do we tell a parent, you know, in this sense, 00:22:55.34\00:22:58.81 or a guardian for that matter? 00:22:58.84\00:23:00.91 I think that there is both clinical help that, 00:23:00.98\00:23:06.28 in many cases is needed, and spiritual. 00:23:06.31\00:23:10.72 Sometimes, as Christian folks, 00:23:10.79\00:23:13.12 we will take the latter path, 00:23:13.15\00:23:17.43 and not fully appreciate the need 00:23:17.46\00:23:20.50 for that practical path, practical clinical help. 00:23:20.53\00:23:24.47 I think we have to do both. 00:23:24.50\00:23:26.13 And get, start getting the things 00:23:26.17\00:23:31.27 in place in the child 00:23:31.31\00:23:32.64 so that they can start taking practical steps 00:23:32.67\00:23:36.34 towards recovery. 00:23:36.38\00:23:38.21 But the spiritual piece 00:23:38.25\00:23:41.65 has to kind of come in and replace. 00:23:41.68\00:23:45.69 Because if... 00:23:45.72\00:23:47.12 As you know, pastor, 00:23:47.16\00:23:48.49 there is a story in the Bible of a man 00:23:48.52\00:23:51.26 who was delivered of a demon. 00:23:51.29\00:23:54.03 And that demon goes out, finds no home 00:23:54.10\00:23:57.00 and someone else comes back, finds them clean, but empty. 00:23:57.03\00:24:00.44 Clean, that's a good thing. 00:24:00.47\00:24:02.17 Empty, bad thing. 00:24:02.20\00:24:04.11 And so it gets seven other demons 00:24:04.14\00:24:06.61 and repossesses the man. 00:24:06.68\00:24:09.21 So when we take practical steps to get clean, 00:24:09.24\00:24:12.68 we have to, at the same time, 00:24:12.71\00:24:14.05 be bringing in the spiritual peace to fill, 00:24:14.12\00:24:16.99 occupy that space with divine light, 00:24:17.02\00:24:20.29 because light and darkness cannot occupy the same space. 00:24:20.36\00:24:23.93 Absolutely. Well spoken. 00:24:23.96\00:24:25.79 Yeah, and I love how you said that. 00:24:25.83\00:24:27.20 I just want to say it again, 00:24:27.23\00:24:28.53 especially because that story is so powerful 00:24:28.56\00:24:30.53 that it's one thing to clean a house 00:24:30.57\00:24:33.30 and I think so many times 00:24:33.34\00:24:34.80 as we minister to young people, you know, whether we do it, 00:24:34.84\00:24:37.87 you know, intentionally or not, you know, we always say, 00:24:37.91\00:24:39.94 you know, "Get rid of it, 00:24:39.97\00:24:41.34 just you know that music is not of God, 00:24:41.38\00:24:43.81 take that music, throw it away." 00:24:43.85\00:24:45.28 You know, even when we had, 00:24:45.31\00:24:46.68 you know, parties at church where, 00:24:46.72\00:24:48.05 you know, we had big trash cans 00:24:48.08\00:24:49.42 and we have people throw their music away and say, 00:24:49.45\00:24:51.09 "You know what, that's not of God," 00:24:51.12\00:24:52.45 and we know that. 00:24:52.49\00:24:53.82 But in the challenge that you just spoke of, Brandon, 00:24:53.86\00:24:55.29 is that oftentimes 00:24:55.32\00:24:57.09 we don't have them replace the bad 00:24:57.13\00:25:00.96 when they swept the house with the good. 00:25:00.96\00:25:03.47 And we can do even a deeper injustice 00:25:03.50\00:25:06.63 if we don't replace, 00:25:06.67\00:25:08.30 you know the bad with the good 00:25:08.34\00:25:11.31 and ask what God really wants us to understand, 00:25:11.34\00:25:13.58 especially as we minister to urban youth. 00:25:13.61\00:25:17.65 I just wanted to sort of quickly go through the, 00:25:17.68\00:25:20.92 for the parent who may be suspicious 00:25:20.95\00:25:23.82 that a child has an addiction. 00:25:23.89\00:25:25.59 What are some signs and symptoms, 00:25:25.62\00:25:27.39 how do you know? 00:25:27.46\00:25:29.59 Glossy eyes, inappropriate laughter, 00:25:29.62\00:25:33.06 spots or sores around the person's mouth, 00:25:33.09\00:25:36.23 the child appears to be dazed or dizzy, 00:25:36.26\00:25:39.60 decreased appetite, excessive sleepiness, 00:25:39.63\00:25:44.77 sudden changes in personality. 00:25:44.81\00:25:46.17 And, you know, 00:25:46.21\00:25:47.54 that this is not the way your child is. 00:25:47.58\00:25:49.21 But there's just a sudden 00:25:49.24\00:25:51.75 inexplicable change in personality, 00:25:51.78\00:25:54.75 unable to account for large sums of money. 00:25:54.78\00:25:59.89 Paraphernalia around the house like blades, roach clips, 00:25:59.92\00:26:04.96 rolling paper, bottles, 00:26:04.99\00:26:07.76 or little cans, or little pipes, 00:26:07.83\00:26:11.07 depression, loneliness, isolation, 00:26:11.10\00:26:15.54 all those are classical signs that, 00:26:15.57\00:26:17.31 you know, something just is not right. 00:26:17.34\00:26:20.98 And so what do you do? 00:26:21.01\00:26:22.34 As Brandon quite rightly said, you seek help. 00:26:22.38\00:26:26.31 You seek spiritual help, 00:26:26.35\00:26:28.22 and you seek psychological help. 00:26:28.25\00:26:30.69 Help is certainly available, and parents must be willing 00:26:30.72\00:26:35.49 to reach out and ask for help. 00:26:35.52\00:26:38.63 Okay, okay. Where do we go? 00:26:38.66\00:26:41.00 If a parent wants to know like, "Right now my kid, you know, 00:26:41.03\00:26:44.57 has this alcohol problem, where do I turn to?" 00:26:44.60\00:26:48.94 There is a number of resources. 00:26:48.97\00:26:51.34 Unfortunately, 00:26:51.37\00:26:52.71 most of these are outside the church. 00:26:52.74\00:26:56.58 Community mental health agencies. 00:26:56.61\00:26:59.25 There's various substance abuse agencies 00:26:59.28\00:27:02.65 that are set up with the intention 00:27:02.68\00:27:04.42 of providing assistance. 00:27:04.45\00:27:06.99 There's various social work agencies also. 00:27:07.02\00:27:09.59 Okay. 00:27:09.62\00:27:10.96 The National Institute on substance 00:27:10.99\00:27:12.73 and Drug Abuse has a wide array of resources 00:27:12.76\00:27:16.67 that are available. 00:27:16.70\00:27:18.03 Okay, okay. 00:27:18.07\00:27:19.47 So we want parents to get help, and to do it right away. 00:27:19.50\00:27:23.91 Absolutely. This has been good. 00:27:23.94\00:27:25.27 I mean, our time is already up. 00:27:25.31\00:27:26.98 You know, amazingly, 00:27:27.01\00:27:28.34 I mean, time has just flown by extremely fast. 00:27:28.38\00:27:31.01 What I want to share, you know, 00:27:31.05\00:27:32.38 in the last 30 seconds or so, is this promise, 00:27:32.41\00:27:35.75 this text that God says 00:27:35.78\00:27:37.12 He will do for us in Ezekiel 36. 00:27:37.19\00:27:39.82 Bible says Ezekiel 36:25, Bible says, 00:27:39.85\00:27:41.89 "Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, 00:27:41.92\00:27:44.86 and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, 00:27:44.89\00:27:47.60 from all your idols, I will cleanse you. 00:27:47.66\00:27:50.23 And a new heart also will I give you, 00:27:50.27\00:27:52.80 and a new spirit I will put within you, 00:27:52.83\00:27:55.40 I will take away the stony heart of your flesh, 00:27:55.44\00:27:59.21 and I will give you a heart of flesh." 00:27:59.24\00:28:01.84 Amen. 00:28:01.88\00:28:03.21 My friends, the Bible says that God is the one 00:28:03.24\00:28:05.25 that would give us the new heart 00:28:05.28\00:28:06.88 and He is the one 00:28:06.95\00:28:08.28 that will take the desires away. 00:28:08.32\00:28:10.75 Trust Him. 00:28:10.82\00:28:12.15 But not only trust God but seek help 00:28:12.19\00:28:14.36 as well whether it be clinically 00:28:14.39\00:28:15.89 or in the church as well. 00:28:15.92\00:28:17.76 Let's make sure that we are effectively ministering 00:28:17.79\00:28:20.63 to our youth today. 00:28:20.66\00:28:22.13 Until next time, I'm Pastor William Lee, 00:28:22.16\00:28:23.90 sorry, time has run out, but we'll see you next time. 00:28:23.97\00:28:26.50 God bless you. Amen. 00:28:26.53\00:28:28.04 Welcome. 00:28:44.89\00:28:59.87
