Do you throw out your good eating habits 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.86 when it's party time? 00:00:02.90\00:00:04.23 Stay tuned for healthy party food ideas. 00:00:04.27\00:00:06.67 Hello, I'm Marcella Lynch. 00:00:26.49\00:00:28.16 This is Food For Thought, 00:00:28.19\00:00:29.69 the cooking show that features God's eating plan 00:00:29.72\00:00:32.49 as unfolded through Scripture 00:00:32.53\00:00:34.46 and through an understanding of God's other book, 00:00:34.50\00:00:37.10 the book of nature. 00:00:37.13\00:00:39.23 Funny thing happens when people get together 00:00:39.27\00:00:41.80 to celebrate events and attitude takes over 00:00:41.84\00:00:45.31 that it's a party and anything goes. 00:00:45.34\00:00:48.31 For some reason people let loose 00:00:48.34\00:00:50.58 and serve all those choice tidbits 00:00:50.61\00:00:52.78 that are too rich, too fattening, 00:00:52.81\00:00:55.65 too high in cholesterol, 00:00:55.68\00:00:57.02 and too decadent. 00:00:57.05\00:00:58.99 Most people over eat, 00:00:59.02\00:01:01.32 then when the party's over they feel over indulged. 00:01:01.36\00:01:04.83 And it takes several days to feel normal again. 00:01:04.86\00:01:08.53 Today's class will feature a variety of healthful snacks 00:01:08.56\00:01:11.73 and party foods. 00:01:11.77\00:01:13.47 Now celebration is an important part of life. 00:01:13.50\00:01:16.44 Parties bring special memories and bonds 00:01:16.47\00:01:19.31 between family and friends. 00:01:19.34\00:01:21.81 When Jesus started His earthly ministry here on earth, 00:01:21.84\00:01:24.55 His first miracle was at a wedding party. 00:01:24.58\00:01:28.18 And it lasted for three days. 00:01:28.22\00:01:30.55 He turned water into wine. 00:01:30.59\00:01:33.05 I'm glad Jesus liked to have fun. 00:01:33.09\00:01:36.02 Being cheerful keeps you healthy. 00:01:36.06\00:01:38.36 It is slow death to be gloomy all the time. 00:01:38.39\00:01:41.56 Proverb 17:22, reminds us that a merry heart 00:01:41.60\00:01:46.10 does good like a medicine, 00:01:46.13\00:01:48.50 but a broken spirit dries the bone. 00:01:48.54\00:01:52.74 It seems evident from reading various passages of Scripture 00:01:52.77\00:01:56.98 that people in the Bible times 00:01:57.01\00:01:59.01 knew it was unhealthful and unwise 00:01:59.05\00:02:01.35 to overeat a delicious delicacies. 00:02:01.38\00:02:03.95 Found another interesting scripture here 00:02:03.99\00:02:05.82 in Proverbs 23:1-3. 00:02:05.85\00:02:09.72 And it says, "When you sit down to eat 00:02:09.76\00:02:12.29 with the ruler 00:02:12.33\00:02:13.80 consider carefully what is before you 00:02:13.83\00:02:16.93 and put a knife to your throat. 00:02:16.97\00:02:19.47 If you are a man given to appetite, 00:02:19.50\00:02:22.17 do not desire his delicacies, 00:02:22.20\00:02:25.07 for they are deceptive foods." 00:02:25.11\00:02:29.34 When we overeat a rich food, we are not clear minded 00:02:29.38\00:02:32.55 to discuss important matters and make wise choices 00:02:32.58\00:02:35.85 just as we are similarly affected 00:02:35.88\00:02:38.35 by alcoholic beverages. 00:02:38.39\00:02:40.92 There is one more text I like to share with you 00:02:40.96\00:02:42.96 in Psalm 141. 00:02:42.99\00:02:46.09 And it says, 00:02:46.13\00:02:48.10 "Do not incline my heart to any evil thing 00:02:48.13\00:02:51.50 to practice wicked works with men who work iniquity. 00:02:51.53\00:02:55.87 And do not let me eat of their delicacies." 00:02:55.90\00:03:00.08 The Apostle Paul as the health reformer, 00:03:00.11\00:03:03.11 he was a health reformer. 00:03:03.14\00:03:05.05 He said, "I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: 00:03:05.08\00:03:09.35 lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, 00:03:09.38\00:03:14.39 I myself should be a castaway." 00:03:14.42\00:03:17.29 He felt that a responsibility rested upon him 00:03:17.33\00:03:21.26 to preserve all his powers in their strength 00:03:21.30\00:03:25.00 that he might use them to the glory of God. 00:03:25.03\00:03:28.97 Overeating is the sin of the age. 00:03:29.00\00:03:32.27 The Word of God places the sin of gluttony 00:03:32.31\00:03:35.34 in the same category with drunkenness. 00:03:35.38\00:03:39.41 It destroys a person's usefulness to others. 00:03:39.45\00:03:42.85 It weakens the body and the mind, 00:03:42.88\00:03:44.69 and brings ultimately sickness. 00:03:44.72\00:03:47.66 The digestive organs break down under the stress 00:03:47.69\00:03:50.43 and strain of the overwork. 00:03:50.46\00:03:53.16 When I plan snacks for parties, 00:03:53.19\00:03:54.76 I think of foods that are light, 00:03:54.80\00:03:56.43 and easy to digest, and refreshing. 00:03:56.46\00:03:59.40 And so today our class is on party foods 00:03:59.43\00:04:02.10 and we're getting ready to have a party here. 00:04:02.14\00:04:05.44 And Myrna is here to help me today. 00:04:05.47\00:04:07.74 And I'd like to say, Myrna, 00:04:07.78\00:04:09.64 that I have a lot of memories of you and I 00:04:09.68\00:04:11.38 doing parties together. 00:04:11.41\00:04:12.75 That's true. 00:04:12.78\00:04:14.12 We've actually known each other since our children were young 00:04:14.15\00:04:17.15 and we work together at the school 00:04:17.19\00:04:19.55 where we both work. 00:04:19.59\00:04:20.92 And so we do a lot of party planning. 00:04:20.96\00:04:23.19 So I'm glad to have your assistance here today. 00:04:23.22\00:04:26.06 This looks like fun. Let's get going. 00:04:26.09\00:04:27.76 Let's invite some of those kids that we have at school over. 00:04:27.80\00:04:31.03 I hope they will like it. 00:04:31.07\00:04:32.73 We have a whole array of things waiting to show you here. 00:04:32.77\00:04:35.84 And let's just start with what's here. 00:04:35.87\00:04:37.57 We have some wonderful vegetable relishes. 00:04:37.61\00:04:39.67 That's a really health food, isn't it? 00:04:39.71\00:04:41.81 That's from God's natural plant sources. 00:04:41.84\00:04:44.81 And we want to demonstrate first this dip here that 00:04:44.85\00:04:47.62 that's in the center. 00:04:47.65\00:04:49.38 This is the interesting dip that starts with tofu actually. 00:04:49.42\00:04:53.46 The tofu walnut-olive dip. 00:04:53.49\00:04:55.52 Now this recipe is not in our Cooking 00:04:55.56\00:04:57.83 by the Book cookbook. 00:04:57.86\00:04:59.19 A lot of our recipes, most of them are in the book. 00:04:59.23\00:05:01.13 But for today's class we've brought in 00:05:01.16\00:05:03.57 a few other recipes. 00:05:03.60\00:05:05.00 But at the end of the show, we'll give you some information 00:05:05.03\00:05:07.74 where you can order the book if you would like a copy. 00:05:07.77\00:05:12.01 Right, so we're going to talk about walnut-olive dip. 00:05:12.04\00:05:16.21 And let's first of all take a look at the ingredients. 00:05:16.24\00:05:19.85 Walnut-olive dip is: 00:05:19.88\00:05:21.95 So this is a very simple recipe. 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.20 And I just like to use the blender 00:05:38.23\00:05:39.83 because it's a very quick thing to do. 00:05:39.87\00:05:42.67 And then when we get all finished 00:05:42.70\00:05:44.24 mixing the mixture in the blender, 00:05:44.27\00:05:45.87 we will fold in two tablespoons of walnuts 00:05:45.91\00:05:48.21 that have been finally chopped, 00:05:48.24\00:05:50.38 and four teaspoons of black olives 00:05:50.41\00:05:52.35 that have been chopped. 00:05:52.38\00:05:53.72 This dip will make about one and three fourths cups 00:05:53.75\00:05:56.69 all together. 00:05:56.72\00:05:58.72 All right, so let's just... 00:05:58.75\00:06:00.56 This is a package of tofu 00:06:00.59\00:06:02.09 that we've drained the liquid off, 00:06:02.12\00:06:03.83 it always accumulates more as it sits. 00:06:03.86\00:06:06.93 So here we'll just put this one half pound of tofu 00:06:06.96\00:06:09.60 in the blender 00:06:09.63\00:06:11.17 and the other ingredients 00:06:11.20\00:06:12.53 will just go right here with it. 00:06:12.57\00:06:15.40 So we have the lemon juice. 00:06:15.44\00:06:17.67 We have that little bit of sugar and salt here 00:06:20.94\00:06:23.14 that it mentioned. 00:06:23.18\00:06:25.71 It's nice that you've got these things all measured out 00:06:25.75\00:06:28.18 so nicely for us, Myrna. 00:06:28.22\00:06:30.02 It really does help to cook fast, does it? 00:06:30.05\00:06:31.85 Yeah. 00:06:31.89\00:06:33.22 I'll let you go ahead 00:06:33.25\00:06:34.59 and put these olives and walnuts here 00:06:34.62\00:06:35.96 and stir this dipped together 00:06:35.99\00:06:37.33 when I get this all whizzed up here. 00:06:37.36\00:06:40.40 This makes a nice creamy smooth mixture. 00:06:40.43\00:06:42.66 I like dips and recipes that are quick and easy. 00:06:57.55\00:07:00.82 And this seems to be one. 00:07:00.85\00:07:02.48 Let's just go ahead and mix in some of the olives 00:07:02.52\00:07:05.69 and nuts and that's it. 00:07:05.72\00:07:07.12 It's very tasty. 00:07:07.16\00:07:08.49 We were kind of like taken a sneak preview 00:07:08.52\00:07:10.43 just before the class. 00:07:10.46\00:07:11.79 That's true. 00:07:11.83\00:07:13.16 And this is exactly what we have right here 00:07:13.19\00:07:14.76 in the center. 00:07:14.80\00:07:16.13 And this is nice to serve with the parties 00:07:16.16\00:07:17.50 if you have chips, vegetable relishes. 00:07:17.53\00:07:19.93 These happen to be baked chips with no salt or fat on them. 00:07:19.97\00:07:24.47 And they're just really wonderful. 00:07:24.51\00:07:26.54 And then another fun idea, Myrna, 00:07:26.57\00:07:28.81 is this we have also a platter to show you 00:07:28.84\00:07:31.31 of dried vegetables. 00:07:31.35\00:07:33.05 I don't know if any of you are into dehydrating 00:07:33.08\00:07:35.95 fruits and vegetables. 00:07:35.98\00:07:37.32 But Myrna and I both do that. 00:07:37.35\00:07:39.39 And you can dry a lot of different kind of vegetables 00:07:39.42\00:07:42.06 and then when fresh things are not available 00:07:42.09\00:07:44.66 or they're more expensive, you can just use dried ones. 00:07:44.69\00:07:47.76 And so this is a different dip recipe 00:07:47.80\00:07:49.93 that we have with this one. 00:07:49.96\00:07:52.63 But aren't those lovely. 00:07:52.67\00:07:54.00 These are summer squash, 00:07:54.04\00:07:55.50 these are those little yellow summer squash. 00:07:55.54\00:07:58.24 And we have here some dried zucchini, 00:07:58.27\00:08:00.44 they make wonderful chips. 00:08:00.48\00:08:02.08 We have dried carrots, dried tomatoes, 00:08:02.11\00:08:05.55 and this is called dip called hummus. 00:08:05.58\00:08:07.98 And we're going to give you the ingredients 00:08:08.02\00:08:09.42 for this hummus recipe right now. 00:08:09.45\00:08:11.79 And this is kind of a Middle Eastern 00:08:11.82\00:08:13.66 kind of a dip starting with garbanzos. 00:08:13.69\00:08:15.79 But just whiz all of that up. 00:08:50.93\00:08:52.83 I guess we can just do that, 00:08:52.86\00:08:54.26 we can use this exact same blender right here, 00:08:54.30\00:08:56.77 and we'll just show you how that one goes. 00:08:56.80\00:08:59.50 We'll put the garbanzos... 00:08:59.53\00:09:00.87 This is one whole can. 00:09:00.90\00:09:02.77 We'll just put it right here in the blender 00:09:02.80\00:09:05.74 with the sesame tahini, we call this. 00:09:05.77\00:09:10.98 This is very nutritious, nut butter, sesame seed butter. 00:09:11.01\00:09:16.05 Marcella, I have to tell you that, 00:09:16.08\00:09:17.55 you know, when you're in kitchen, 00:09:17.59\00:09:19.05 sometimes we have to substitute. 00:09:19.09\00:09:20.82 Right. 00:09:20.86\00:09:22.19 Well, I didn't find the garlic today. 00:09:22.22\00:09:24.19 So I substituted with some garlic powder. 00:09:24.23\00:09:26.49 Garlic powder, well, that sounds good to me. 00:09:26.53\00:09:29.36 And what is this one, that looks like the cumin. 00:09:29.40\00:09:31.37 That's cumin. And this is the water. 00:09:31.40\00:09:33.90 Let's wait and see how much we need to make. 00:09:33.94\00:09:35.64 This is the juice off the garbanzos 00:09:35.67\00:09:37.71 to make it the right consistency. 00:09:37.74\00:09:39.71 It probably will need a little of that. 00:09:39.74\00:09:41.54 That was working, wasn't it? 00:10:21.18\00:10:22.82 That's nice and thick. That's great. 00:10:22.85\00:10:25.45 I love this hummus if you've ever eaten 00:10:25.49\00:10:27.22 at a Middle Eastern restaurant. 00:10:27.26\00:10:29.19 I want to put this here where we can see it 00:10:29.22\00:10:31.56 a little bit better here. 00:10:31.59\00:10:35.56 I love this because it's so nutritious 00:10:35.60\00:10:37.90 and tasty. 00:10:37.93\00:10:40.70 I don't know if you've ever eaten those falafel. 00:10:40.74\00:10:44.11 Oh, I love them. 00:10:44.14\00:10:45.47 Pocket sandwiches, I make those too 00:10:45.51\00:10:47.68 and this is kind of a hummus dip, 00:10:47.71\00:10:49.81 that's nice for that. 00:10:49.84\00:10:51.18 So this the hummus dip. 00:10:51.21\00:10:52.55 And this is delicious. 00:10:52.58\00:10:53.92 I'll let you take this off. 00:10:53.95\00:10:55.28 That's exactly what we have right here in this tray 00:10:55.32\00:10:58.45 with the vegetable dip. 00:10:58.49\00:10:59.82 And it also could be used for the chips 00:10:59.85\00:11:02.19 and for all of the other dip type foods 00:11:02.22\00:11:05.26 that you might want to serve at a party. 00:11:05.29\00:11:07.56 So you can actually have the chips 00:11:07.60\00:11:09.20 and the dips at your party 00:11:09.23\00:11:10.57 without all the fat and the salt. 00:11:10.60\00:11:11.93 And it's really kind of a conversation piece 00:11:11.97\00:11:13.90 to have all these different vegetables, 00:11:13.94\00:11:15.44 especially the dried ones that are kind of unusual. 00:11:15.47\00:11:19.14 All right. 00:11:19.17\00:11:20.51 Now another thing that you see often 00:11:20.54\00:11:22.28 when you celebrate with friends, 00:11:22.31\00:11:23.78 especially in the patio in the backyard is kebabs. 00:11:23.81\00:11:28.48 We're going to make some vegetable shish kebabs now. 00:11:28.52\00:11:32.65 And let's see, 00:11:32.69\00:11:34.02 I don't think I need the blender. 00:11:34.06\00:11:35.39 Let's move that out of the way. 00:11:35.42\00:11:37.36 And I'll take this off. 00:11:37.39\00:11:38.96 You want to take those off 00:11:38.99\00:11:40.33 and then we'll bring back a little later. 00:11:40.36\00:11:43.13 We have one more tray that goes with this. 00:11:43.16\00:11:46.13 Okay, we'll talk about the recipe first. 00:11:46.17\00:11:49.44 The recipe is in kind of several steps here. 00:11:49.47\00:11:52.64 And mainly you just select 00:11:52.67\00:11:54.74 whatever kinds of things you want here. 00:11:54.78\00:11:57.38 This recipe is not in the book 00:11:57.41\00:11:59.31 and it's a little bit long to show you on the screen. 00:11:59.35\00:12:01.98 So I'm just gonna talk to you about it, 00:12:02.02\00:12:04.22 but we'll send you this recipe when you order the book. 00:12:04.25\00:12:07.22 So any of the recipes that are not in the book, 00:12:07.26\00:12:09.29 you're gonna get them if you order the book. 00:12:09.32\00:12:11.59 So you just make your selection 00:12:11.63\00:12:12.96 of some different colorful things. 00:12:12.99\00:12:14.56 And if you use some of the gluten meat, 00:12:14.60\00:12:17.53 the vegetarian meat 00:12:17.57\00:12:18.90 like we demonstrated in one of our last few classes, 00:12:18.93\00:12:22.34 or you can use that for the meat on your skewers, 00:12:22.37\00:12:25.44 or you could use tofu. 00:12:25.47\00:12:28.41 And here today we have the tofu 00:12:28.44\00:12:30.25 on our shish kebab sticks. 00:12:30.28\00:12:31.95 And here's what you do to the tofu. 00:12:31.98\00:12:34.18 First of all, you make a homemade teriyaki sauce. 00:12:34.22\00:12:36.92 Now the reason we home make so many things 00:12:36.95\00:12:39.25 is just because the teriyaki sauces 00:12:39.29\00:12:42.02 and all the other kind of sauces 00:12:42.06\00:12:44.39 are so full of vinegar and spices when you buy them 00:12:44.43\00:12:47.13 that we have found ways to make them very appetizing 00:12:47.16\00:12:50.33 with just natural things. 00:12:50.37\00:12:52.47 So the teriyaki sauce, 00:12:52.50\00:12:54.07 you can start with two cups of... 00:12:54.10\00:12:55.84 This is a humongous amount, 00:12:55.87\00:12:57.21 I'm not sure you need to make this much. 00:12:57.24\00:12:58.84 But it's two cups of soy sauce, one half cup lemon juice, 00:12:58.87\00:13:03.45 one half cup water, 00:13:03.48\00:13:05.45 one and a half tablespoons onion powder, 00:13:05.48\00:13:08.28 and one teaspoon garlic powder, and a half a cup of honey, 00:13:08.32\00:13:12.05 it's kind of that sweet sour. 00:13:12.09\00:13:13.89 So you just mix this together 00:13:13.92\00:13:15.26 and you get about three and a half cups. 00:13:15.29\00:13:16.83 And this is what you kind of marinate the gluten chunks 00:13:16.86\00:13:19.73 or the tofu chunks into so that the flavor is there. 00:13:19.76\00:13:23.10 And then you just put these on a cookie sheet 00:13:23.13\00:13:25.53 and you bake these in the oven at 350 for about 20 minutes. 00:13:25.57\00:13:29.70 So that's the way these have been done here. 00:13:29.74\00:13:32.37 And when you get that finish, 00:13:32.41\00:13:33.74 then you just start putting on some of your vegetables 00:13:33.78\00:13:37.65 right on to the sticks here. 00:13:37.68\00:13:39.31 And you can buy these wooden shish kebabs sticks 00:13:39.35\00:13:41.98 in most places. 00:13:42.02\00:13:43.35 We just found these very easily in the market. 00:13:43.39\00:13:46.49 Here I've got one just about ready to add 00:13:46.52\00:13:48.69 a couple more things here. 00:13:48.72\00:13:51.53 And there we have it. 00:13:51.56\00:13:52.89 And these are going to be baked in the oven. 00:13:52.93\00:13:58.27 And we don't have a cookie sheet here, 00:13:58.30\00:14:00.14 but this is a pie plate. 00:14:00.17\00:14:01.80 We have another sauce, 00:14:01.84\00:14:03.17 you might want to jot this down, 00:14:03.20\00:14:04.54 this is what we call our shish kebab sauce. 00:14:04.57\00:14:09.08 And let me just tell you what's in this sauce here. 00:14:09.11\00:14:11.48 So I think it's wonderful that you can get that sweet and sour 00:14:30.20\00:14:32.93 and all this nice flavor without the irritating things. 00:14:32.97\00:14:36.17 So what you do is you mix up the sauce here. 00:14:36.20\00:14:38.97 And as you can see, it's been sprinkled 00:14:39.01\00:14:40.88 right on some of these things 00:14:40.91\00:14:42.24 like you can just kind of like sprinkle it on 00:14:42.28\00:14:44.11 and kind of give it some more flavor. 00:14:44.15\00:14:47.75 And then these are baked in the oven. 00:14:47.78\00:14:50.79 And let's see, 00:14:50.82\00:14:52.15 the temperature for this part of it is also 350 00:14:52.19\00:14:56.39 and it takes 5-7 minutes. 00:14:56.42\00:14:59.16 And you put these on a sprayed cookie sheet. 00:14:59.19\00:15:02.56 So that's one of the items that you can make for parties 00:15:02.60\00:15:05.43 and they're very popular. 00:15:05.47\00:15:08.30 I'll just take this out and go and bake them a little more. 00:15:08.34\00:15:11.67 See if we can... 00:15:11.71\00:15:13.04 Good. That's great. 00:15:13.07\00:15:14.41 There's more exciting things here. 00:15:14.44\00:15:16.38 Excuse me. Right. 00:15:16.41\00:15:17.75 And while you're doing that, we're going to talk about 00:15:17.78\00:15:19.18 the next one we're going to show you 00:15:19.21\00:15:20.55 is tofu spaghetti sauce, 00:15:20.58\00:15:23.32 spaghetti balls with sort of a sauce, 00:15:23.35\00:15:25.45 a sweet and sour sauce over the top. 00:15:25.49\00:15:27.59 People like these finger foods, 00:15:27.62\00:15:29.16 you know, with that sweet and sour is kind of popular. 00:15:29.19\00:15:31.36 So we have found a way to make it very healthful 00:15:31.39\00:15:33.50 sweet and sour sauce. 00:15:33.53\00:15:35.26 And we're going to show you that one next. 00:15:35.30\00:15:37.87 And if you do have the cookbook, 00:15:37.90\00:15:39.80 the tofu spaghetti bowl recipe that we have here 00:15:39.83\00:15:43.17 is on page 128, 00:15:43.20\00:15:45.41 that we will talk about the ingredients 00:15:45.44\00:15:47.28 in case you don't have the book. 00:15:47.31\00:15:48.84 And I know we're reading recipes way too fast 00:15:48.88\00:15:51.11 for you to probably copy down 00:15:51.15\00:15:52.58 because we're crowding all of this into half an hour 00:15:52.61\00:15:54.92 and we're just trying to give you 00:15:54.95\00:15:56.32 as many ideas as we can. 00:15:56.35\00:15:58.29 But aren't these lovely kind of like non meatballs 00:15:58.32\00:16:01.72 made from tofu and other ingredients. 00:16:01.76\00:16:04.26 All right, so the ingredients 00:16:04.29\00:16:06.16 for the tofu spaghetti balls is: 00:16:06.19\00:16:09.23 Right. 00:16:38.09\00:16:39.43 Now you just take that and you make it 00:16:39.46\00:16:41.20 into the shape of the meatballs instead of 00:16:41.23\00:16:43.90 or you could fry these as patties, 00:16:43.93\00:16:45.80 and these are kind of nice for like veggie burger patties 00:16:45.83\00:16:48.97 for or like a hamburger patty also. 00:16:49.00\00:16:51.47 But we've just shaped them 00:16:51.51\00:16:52.91 and we brown these on a cookie sheet in the oven. 00:16:52.94\00:16:56.14 And if you do it in the oven, 00:16:56.18\00:16:57.58 then you just do it at about 350 for about 30 minutes. 00:16:57.61\00:17:02.78 And that's all you need to do. 00:17:02.82\00:17:04.55 And then these are nice 00:17:04.59\00:17:05.92 with the sweet and sour sauce here. 00:17:05.95\00:17:08.19 This is a nice sweet and sour sauce here. 00:17:08.22\00:17:10.66 It looks quite similar to the kind 00:17:10.69\00:17:12.29 that you would get if you went to eat 00:17:12.33\00:17:14.03 some kind of oriental meal. 00:17:14.06\00:17:16.26 And it's very nice. 00:17:16.30\00:17:17.63 I'm going to tell you about that now. 00:17:17.67\00:17:19.93 The sweet and sour sauce. 00:17:19.97\00:17:22.77 So here are the ingredients: 00:17:22.80\00:17:24.14 And what you need to do here is just to put it in a saucepan 00:17:43.59\00:17:46.96 over medium heat and stir it with a wire weapon 00:17:47.00\00:17:50.90 till it's thickened. 00:17:50.93\00:17:52.27 And then you can put this in a pretty bowl, 00:17:52.30\00:17:54.67 it's surrounded with your meatballs 00:17:54.70\00:17:56.71 and you can just serve these at a party for meatballs, 00:17:56.74\00:18:00.14 either cold or warm. 00:18:00.18\00:18:02.74 And this is a very nice way to get 00:18:02.78\00:18:04.88 a natural kind of the sweet and sour. 00:18:04.91\00:18:07.65 So you'll use the pineapple sweetness 00:18:07.68\00:18:10.42 and you use the lemon juice tartness 00:18:10.45\00:18:12.15 which is God's natural way. 00:18:12.19\00:18:15.02 So that's another quick one. 00:18:15.06\00:18:17.26 Now if I had somebody just magically make those, 00:18:17.29\00:18:20.06 I could throw a party quite often, couldn't I? 00:20:47.58\00:20:49.24 It just so happens that chocolate is not a health food. 00:20:49.28\00:20:54.68 Whoa, there it is. That's so pretty. 00:20:54.72\00:20:56.95 This is the carob pudding right here in the glass. 00:20:56.99\00:20:59.15 And these are some other cookies 00:20:59.19\00:21:00.52 we're gonna talk to you about those too. 00:21:00.56\00:21:02.69 But chocolate is high in fat 00:21:02.72\00:21:05.03 and chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine 00:21:05.06\00:21:08.13 which are irritating chemical substances. 00:21:08.16\00:21:12.73 And it's just more bitter. 00:21:12.77\00:21:15.00 And so it takes more sugar added to it 00:21:15.04\00:21:17.41 when they make chocolates in different ways. 00:21:17.44\00:21:19.57 Carob is not going to taste exactly like chocolate. 00:21:19.61\00:21:22.34 But it's a very nice alternative. 00:21:22.38\00:21:24.98 And so I buy the carob powder, it looks here like this. 00:21:25.01\00:21:29.02 It's just very brown kind, it looks like cocoa powder. 00:21:29.05\00:21:33.19 And you can buy this in natural food stores 00:21:33.22\00:21:35.76 and use it in place of chocolate, 00:21:35.79\00:21:37.46 you can make hot drinks for like a hot chocolate 00:21:37.49\00:21:40.23 with it only it's carob. 00:21:40.26\00:21:41.60 And you can use it 00:21:41.63\00:21:42.96 for all different kinds of cakes and desserts 00:21:43.00\00:21:45.23 and things like that. 00:21:45.27\00:21:46.60 And the nice thing about it is that it isn't irritating. 00:21:46.63\00:21:48.87 It's actually nutritious that has protein 00:21:48.90\00:21:51.21 and the B vitamins in it. 00:21:51.24\00:21:52.77 And it's sweet naturally. 00:21:52.81\00:21:54.74 So you don't have to add as much sweet to compensate, 00:21:54.78\00:21:58.31 and it's low in fat. 00:21:58.35\00:21:59.68 So it's a very nice product. 00:21:59.71\00:22:01.42 And if you've ever seen those trees 00:22:01.45\00:22:03.05 with those big brown pods, 00:22:03.08\00:22:04.79 they're the locust beans 00:22:04.82\00:22:06.15 that's what they make as carob out of. 00:22:06.19\00:22:08.39 Now, got to find a blender here. 00:22:08.42\00:22:10.93 And we'll just whiz this mixture up. 00:22:10.96\00:22:12.56 Let's take a look at the ingredients list 00:22:12.59\00:22:14.50 for the carob cream pie: 00:22:14.53\00:22:16.93 All right, we're going to take these ingredients, 00:22:43.63\00:22:45.56 and just put them in the blender, 00:22:45.59\00:22:47.00 and whiz them up. 00:22:47.03\00:22:48.36 That's an easy way to do it. 00:22:48.40\00:22:49.73 So here we have the milk. 00:22:49.76\00:22:51.10 This is tofu milk that we're using. 00:22:51.13\00:22:54.37 And we'll add the one half teaspoon vanilla. 00:22:54.40\00:22:57.07 If you get more, it's okay. 00:23:00.61\00:23:03.35 And we have that carob powder that we talked about here. 00:23:03.38\00:23:08.05 And the cornstarch will thicken it. 00:23:08.08\00:23:10.19 And you just cook this in the double boiler 00:23:10.22\00:23:11.85 and that cornstarch just gets real nice here. 00:23:11.89\00:23:14.82 I'm going to borrow this spoon right here 00:23:14.86\00:23:16.22 and see if we can get that honey out. 00:23:16.26\00:23:19.09 This is the sweetness. 00:23:19.13\00:23:20.46 And if you want to use the dates 00:23:20.50\00:23:21.83 instead for the sweet, that's fine too. 00:23:21.86\00:23:24.83 Cashews make it creamy and smooth. 00:23:24.87\00:23:27.60 And that's it. 00:23:27.64\00:23:28.97 Oops, a little tiny bit of salt here. 00:23:29.00\00:23:31.17 And here we go. 00:23:31.21\00:23:32.54 Let's just see if we can whiz that up smooth. 00:23:32.57\00:23:34.74 Okay, this is going to go 00:23:58.20\00:23:59.53 into the top of a double boiler. 00:23:59.57\00:24:01.40 Remember that when you use a double boiler, 00:24:01.44\00:24:03.61 you put a little water in the pan underneath 00:24:03.64\00:24:05.77 and then on the top we put the mixture. 00:24:05.81\00:24:08.48 And you put this over like medium high heat. 00:24:08.51\00:24:11.98 And you just stir once in a while 00:24:12.01\00:24:13.42 with your wire whip here. 00:24:13.45\00:24:15.25 And just keep working with it until it gets nice and thick. 00:24:15.28\00:24:17.99 You know, you can break cornstarch down 00:24:18.02\00:24:19.65 so that it's too runny. 00:24:19.69\00:24:21.02 So don't get on real high heat. 00:24:21.06\00:24:23.56 Hey, and then the cookies that we have here 00:24:23.59\00:24:26.46 are called kitchen sink cookies 00:24:26.49\00:24:28.46 because they have so many different things in them. 00:24:28.50\00:24:32.40 And the recipe is on page 226 here in the cookbook. 00:24:32.43\00:24:37.11 We can't take the time to tell you 00:24:37.14\00:24:39.41 the whole list of ingredients. 00:24:39.44\00:24:40.78 But these are so healthy 00:24:40.81\00:24:42.41 because they have whole wheat flour, 00:24:42.44\00:24:43.78 soy flour, rolled oats, coconut milk powder, 00:24:43.81\00:24:46.85 carob chips, nuts, sesame seeds, 00:24:46.88\00:24:48.68 all kind of different things. 00:24:48.72\00:24:50.42 And they're very delicious, we've had a hard time 00:24:50.45\00:24:52.95 keeping our crew people out of these cookies this week. 00:24:52.99\00:24:56.32 So here we have a lot of these nice wonderful party foods here 00:24:56.36\00:25:01.36 that we've talked about today. 00:25:01.40\00:25:04.20 And we have lined them all up here. 00:25:04.23\00:25:07.40 And here's... 00:25:07.44\00:25:08.77 Oh yes, one more idea 00:25:08.80\00:25:10.14 that we have already to share with you. 00:25:10.17\00:25:11.51 We showed you how to make whole wheat pizza 00:25:11.54\00:25:13.64 in one of the other classes 00:25:13.68\00:25:16.14 and we have this cashew pimento cheese sauce recipe 00:25:16.18\00:25:19.61 that's back here on about page 50. 00:25:19.65\00:25:22.22 Oops, no it's 80, page 80. 00:25:22.25\00:25:24.52 And this is a whizzed up mixture in the blender 00:25:24.55\00:25:26.72 that takes the place of your cheese sauce, 00:25:26.76\00:25:28.82 your cheese in the recipe. 00:25:28.86\00:25:30.19 So you take some kind of a pizza sauce 00:25:30.23\00:25:32.99 and you put it over your English muffin. 00:25:33.03\00:25:35.70 We've kind of toasted these English muffins just a little 00:25:35.73\00:25:38.77 so that they're not real soft. 00:25:38.80\00:25:40.94 And then you put the sauce over it, 00:25:40.97\00:25:43.20 and you sprinkle some of this cashew pimento cheese on it, 00:25:43.24\00:25:47.74 sprinkle a little bit of onions, 00:25:47.78\00:25:50.21 or bell peppers, or something on it. 00:25:50.25\00:25:52.28 And you put these back on the cookie sheet 00:25:52.31\00:25:54.72 and you can toast these in the oven 00:25:54.75\00:25:56.22 just like you would make 00:25:56.25\00:25:57.59 your little English muffin buns. 00:25:57.62\00:25:59.55 And these are really, really nice 00:25:59.59\00:26:02.12 for individual sandwiches for the party. 00:26:02.16\00:26:05.33 And I think these are a hit with teenagers too. 00:26:05.36\00:26:09.03 I think so too. 00:26:09.06\00:26:10.40 And so again we have the walnut-olive dip 00:26:10.43\00:26:12.60 made from the tofu here with all the fresh vegetables. 00:26:12.63\00:26:16.30 I don't know if you're into eating fresh vegetables, 00:26:16.34\00:26:19.71 but they're really wonderful. 00:26:19.74\00:26:21.54 Chew them well and they digest beautifully. 00:26:21.58\00:26:24.01 And they're dried vegetables that we have here 00:26:24.05\00:26:26.28 with the hummus. 00:26:26.31\00:26:28.42 There is that garbanzo with the tahini, 00:26:28.45\00:26:30.62 sesame seed butter inside. 00:26:30.65\00:26:32.95 It is a very nice thing and a conversation piece. 00:26:32.99\00:26:36.42 This will be the conversation piece for your party 00:26:36.46\00:26:38.66 because not too many people serve dried vegetable chips. 00:26:38.69\00:26:43.03 And our shish kebabs, our vegetable shish kebab, 00:26:43.06\00:26:45.63 we haven't really baked these 00:26:45.67\00:26:47.00 and you would have these baked a little bit. 00:26:47.04\00:26:48.60 But these are really nice to have on a buffet table. 00:26:48.64\00:26:53.17 All right, and then we have our carob pudding 00:26:53.21\00:26:55.18 and our kitchen sink cookies here. 00:26:55.21\00:26:58.25 And lastly we have our lunch meats, 00:26:58.28\00:27:01.52 and our cheeses, and our other sandwich things. 00:27:01.55\00:27:06.19 And we're so glad that you could join us today 00:27:06.22\00:27:08.09 for our party. 00:27:08.12\00:27:09.46 And we hope that you'll try some of these things too. 00:27:09.49\00:27:11.66 We want to thank you for being here. 00:27:11.69\00:27:14.30 This program is sponsored 00:27:14.33\00:27:15.66 by the Three Angels Broadcasting Network.
