Welcome, you have been watching Families 4 Heaven. 00:00:04.46\00:00:08.14 We are talking with Pamella Simpson about the topic 00:00:08.17\00:00:11.82 The Vicious Rage of Suicide. 00:00:11.85\00:00:16.07 Pam your story is a delightful story even though it is 00:00:18.27\00:00:23.81 such a sad and painful story. 00:00:23.85\00:00:25.74 The reason why I use the word delightful, is that in the 00:00:25.78\00:00:30.22 midst of your pain, you anchored your faith somewhere. 00:00:30.26\00:00:34.66 Tell us where. 00:00:34.70\00:00:36.22 In God, I think everybody can understand pain, but when 00:00:36.26\00:00:45.67 you are able to see God respond to you in a personal way it 00:00:45.70\00:00:55.07 shows you that He does care. 00:00:55.11\00:00:58.30 Trials will come, but God is still in charge. 00:00:58.33\00:01:04.93 Okay, thank you very much. 00:01:07.07\00:01:08.61 Have you moved on? 00:01:08.65\00:01:10.28 Pam: oh yes! Alonzo: you have moved on, okay. 00:01:10.31\00:01:13.45 Dr. June, we have already established and the statistics 00:01:13.49\00:01:19.45 suggest that suicide is prevalent in our society. 00:01:19.48\00:01:26.80 However there are so many myths that are 00:01:26.84\00:01:32.04 bound about suicide. 00:01:32.08\00:01:34.63 So I'm going to share with you some of these myths. 00:01:34.66\00:01:39.40 I want you to react, or respond to them. 00:01:39.43\00:01:42.18 The first one I want to talk about is, this myth says, 00:01:42.22\00:01:46.77 people who talk about suicide, do not commit suicide. 00:01:46.81\00:01:52.82 As we saw in Pam's story, that people who say I'm going 00:01:52.85\00:01:58.83 to kill myself, are likely to do it. 00:01:58.87\00:02:02.42 And the first thing that a person who hears that needs to 00:02:02.46\00:02:07.84 do, is to indicate that obviously you are angry, 00:02:07.87\00:02:11.18 or obviously you are depressed, or obviously there 00:02:11.21\00:02:14.49 is a problem, let's talk about it. 00:02:14.52\00:02:16.78 But never under estimate a threat that a person makes 00:02:16.82\00:02:20.53 on taking their life. 00:02:20.57\00:02:22.26 Here's another one. 00:02:22.30\00:02:23.93 Suicide is related to social economic status. 00:02:23.96\00:02:30.99 That is as far from the truth as it is. 00:02:31.03\00:02:34.16 It is not about how wealthy you are or how poor you are. 00:02:34.20\00:02:39.17 Anyone who gets overwhelmed, or who thinks they are 00:02:39.20\00:02:42.17 unable to handle their problems and are trapped, 00:02:42.20\00:02:45.14 could commit suicide. 00:02:45.17\00:02:47.87 People who commit suicide are either mentally crazy, 00:02:47.91\00:02:53.56 insane, mentally ill, or something is wrong with them. 00:02:53.59\00:02:58.10 It is a myth that it has to be a psychotic person that 00:02:58.13\00:03:02.60 would take their life. 00:03:02.64\00:03:04.18 Now one could argue that clearly there has to be some 00:03:04.22\00:03:07.24 illness for a person to get so helpless. 00:03:07.28\00:03:10.66 On the other hand, even healthy people, or people who 00:03:10.69\00:03:14.38 appear to be healthy, could be at risk 00:03:14.41\00:03:17.84 to take their own lives. 00:03:17.87\00:03:19.63 People who threatened to commit suicide are only 00:03:19.67\00:03:25.83 seeking attention. 00:03:25.86\00:03:27.54 That is one of the biggest myths. 00:03:27.57\00:03:29.76 People don't go around saying I'm going to kill myself, 00:03:29.79\00:03:33.64 except they have had thoughts about killing themselves. 00:03:33.68\00:03:37.12 Now people who threatened, may not carry out the threat, 00:03:37.15\00:03:41.14 but there is some ideas going on and it is a sign that there 00:03:41.17\00:03:45.12 is a problem, so that person needs to get help. 00:03:45.16\00:03:49.42 Another myth that you hear people often say is, suicide 00:03:49.46\00:03:56.55 is painless if done correctly. 00:03:56.58\00:04:00.31 Unfortunately research shows that many people who attempt 00:04:00.34\00:04:06.19 suicide don't actually accomplish suicide. 00:04:06.22\00:04:10.05 In the process they are in agony, because sometimes the 00:04:10.08\00:04:14.97 methods they use don't work. 00:04:15.01\00:04:17.26 They are left either to be a quadriplegic, or to live 00:04:17.30\00:04:21.94 with this aftermath of whatever physical deficits they 00:04:21.97\00:04:26.57 now experience. 00:04:26.61\00:04:27.83 So it is not true that it is painless, it is clearly 00:04:27.86\00:04:32.68 taking your life is a painful and horrible thing. 00:04:32.72\00:04:37.50 Suicide is genetic. 00:04:37.54\00:04:43.43 That also is a myth, there is no gene that a person 00:04:45.47\00:04:49.36 possesses that will predispose you to take your life. 00:04:49.40\00:04:53.98 However, people who commit suicide socialize the people 00:04:54.02\00:04:58.56 around them to think that this is an option. 00:04:58.60\00:05:00.93 And it is said, or research shows that in families where 00:05:00.96\00:05:05.45 people commit suicide, other family members learned that 00:05:05.48\00:05:09.94 oh, this seems like an easy way out. 00:05:09.97\00:05:12.39 And they are at high risk to follow through on a suicide. 00:05:12.42\00:05:18.62 It is said that people who commit suicide, other family 00:05:18.66\00:05:24.82 members are high risks, why? 00:05:24.86\00:05:30.80 As I said before, they observe, they see and sometimes 00:05:30.83\00:05:35.80 get overwhelmed, they get depressed from having had this 00:05:35.84\00:05:40.78 experience in their families. 00:05:40.81\00:05:42.99 They just do not know what to do, much like the person 00:05:43.03\00:05:46.58 before them didn't know what to do. 00:05:46.62\00:05:48.65 Sometimes they keep it secret, when a suicide occurs 00:05:48.68\00:05:53.40 not often reported as a suicide, so the family itself, 00:05:53.44\00:05:58.12 as we said in our last presentation, 00:05:58.15\00:06:00.73 the family is a system. 00:06:00.76\00:06:02.77 A crisis in the family does not just affect the person 00:06:02.81\00:06:06.68 who is the victim, but the entire family is in crisis. 00:06:06.72\00:06:10.67 So the people who are left to mourn or to clean up the 00:06:10.71\00:06:15.12 pain of this horrific experience, are now prone to 00:06:15.16\00:06:19.51 depression and prone to just poor mental and emotional pain 00:06:19.54\00:06:24.62 and they could then do something as painful as a suicide. 00:06:24.65\00:06:29.69 There are some suicide preventions we should 00:06:29.73\00:06:32.95 share with our listeners. 00:06:32.99\00:06:35.12 Have an open discussion about suicide. 00:06:35.15\00:06:38.92 Talk to your children, talk to young people. 00:06:38.96\00:06:42.82 We should never take their threats of suicide lightly. 00:06:42.85\00:06:48.09 As a matter of fact, when someone threatens to commit 00:06:48.13\00:06:53.34 suicide, you should seek professional help. 00:06:53.37\00:06:57.82 It is not something that you should take lightly. 00:06:57.85\00:07:01.08 We trust, as you have been listening to this program, 00:07:01.12\00:07:05.38 that you understand that suicide is not an easy thing. 00:07:05.41\00:07:09.64 There is no easy way out. 00:07:09.68\00:07:11.72 There are some young people who think that I can do it 00:07:11.75\00:07:14.76 and that will be okay. 00:07:14.79\00:07:16.74 It is not going to be okay. 00:07:16.78\00:07:18.94 You must be strong no matter the challenge, no matter the 00:07:18.97\00:07:23.80 problem, you must be strong and you must understand that 00:07:23.83\00:07:28.62 suicide is never an option. 00:07:28.66\00:07:32.25 Have hope, have faith and keep living. 00:07:32.29\00:07:36.93
