look at the Gospel of John.

take a look at how Jesus

was coming across a situation
at the pool of Bethesda

and He saw something
that wrenched His heart.

allow the traditions

of the religious
leaders to reach out

His hand and
touch someone in need.

Let us open up
to John Chapter 5,

"Now there is at
Jerusalem by the sheep

market a pool, which
is called in the Hebrew

tongue Bethesda,
having five porches.

In these lay a great
multitude of impotent

folk, of blind, halt, withered,
00:02:01.54\00:02:05.94
waiting for the
moving of the water.

For an angel sent down at a
certain season into the pool,

and troubled the water,

whosoever then
first after the troubling

of the water
stepped in was made whole

and whatsoever disease he had.

When Jesus saw him lie,

The text reveals
that Jesus was walking

through Jerusalem as
the feast was going on.

Walking alone apparently

as His custom was in
meditation and prayer

and He came upon a
scene of wretchedness.

A scene that so moved
Him, that He acted upon it.

Now, one thing I want you
say is that here the term,

the pool of Bethesda literally

could mean in the Hebrew,
00:03:19.26\00:03:20.62
house of olives
or house of mercy,

which should tell us that Jesus

came across a situation
00:03:29.29\00:03:31.79
and He was the true
merciful life giver,
00:03:31.80\00:03:36.20
healer of all and
He wanted to extend
00:03:36.21\00:03:38.50
mercy to a wretched situation.
00:03:38.51\00:03:42.07
I'm sure as Jesus
gauged upon this scene,

seeing so many that were sick
00:03:45.59\00:03:47.55
and especially this individual
00:03:47.56\00:03:49.58
who had been there for
thirty and eight years.
00:03:49.59\00:03:53.13
Can you imagine being
the creator of the universe,

never intending for sin to
touch and affect this planet,
00:03:55.69\00:04:00.37
this universe the
way it has and walking,
00:04:00.38\00:04:03.11
finally walking this
earth and seeing what Jesus saw.

Friends, I think the
reason why many of us
00:04:07.77\00:04:09.43
struggle so many times is that,
00:04:09.44\00:04:11.87
we don't see
through Jesus' eyes.
00:04:11.88\00:04:14.42
We see through our eyes
and we come across situations
00:04:14.43\00:04:16.76
and we're so desensitized.

Because sin has so corrupted us

and been a part of our fiber.

That when we come
across the situation

we just openly embrace it

and think that's life and go on.

How many have
gone to a foreign land,

India or some
third world country

and then you really
realize how good you have it.

I bet many have
been in that situation.

Now, notice in this story

one of the things that it said

is that there was a
custom during this time.

A custom and a tradition

that an angel would come down,

stir up the waters and as
the angel stirred up the waters,

the first one down would
be healed, first one down.

To me, follow me friends,

this sounds a little
satanic and I'll explain.

The Bible says

This is just
like Satan to come up

with some kind of faulty,

heretical tradition, so
that people are trampling

over one another like
animals to go get healed.

Completely disregard each other,

but only look and
focus in on themselves.

How many times I
don't know about you,

has a store had a great

that you watch on the news.

People are lined up at the store

The door, everyone is
lined up behind the doors

and as soon as they are getting

ready to open up the doors,

it's like a herd
of cattle crushing

everything in front of you

and then people are
fighting with one and other.

People are saying,
hey don't push on me

and they're getting
elbows back and so on.

That is the mentality
that Satan would have us

to have to disregard others

and this is the
tradition that was there.

Now notice, it goes
on "And the Savior came

across this scene
and He saw something

that others did not see."

Let me explain once again,

as He gauged upon
this wretched situation,

He saw an individual
00:06:59.89\00:07:00.98
who had been there for 38 years

with a terrible
disease and what He saw

is someone who was
hopeless and friendless.

And as He gauged upon this scene

I'm sure His heart was broken.

As His heart was
broken, Jesus would do

what He has always
done, extend Himself to fallen

humanity in their time of need.

It was Jesus who
showed Himself to Moses.

revealed Himself to Saul

saying, "Why do
you persecute me."

It was Jesus
coming to Peter saying,

"Feed my sheep."

Now its Jesus coming saying,
"Wilt thou be made whole."

There are times in our lives,
00:08:09.07\00:08:13.33
when we have no
friends and no hope.

When we are at rock bottom

and I know it's
crazy as this may sound,

that is the place where
God would have us to be.

Let me explain,
when we have no friends

and there comes the place

when we've almost out of hope,

Jesus reveals Himself

and we realize
that our true friend

and our true hope
comes from God and God alone.

There are many
times where we can get

our sense of strength
and hope from mommy, daddy,

our wife or spouse
or husband, or kids.

And yes they can be
used as instruments,

but not as crutches.

So many times if our
spouse is doing good,

we're good, if our
spouse have hope, we've hope.

What if our spouse
isn't doing so good,

do we still have that hope.

There are times
in our lives friends,

that no one can
help us except Jesus.

Let us turn to
the Book of Psalms,

Psalms Chapter 23 and
look at this famous verse,

"Yea, though I
walk through the valley

of the shadow of
death, I will fear no evil,

for thou art with me thy
rod and thy staff comfort me."

No one, no one
except merciful, wonderful,

counselor, mighty
God, the Alpha and Omega,

the Prince of Peace,
the Keeper of my faith,

precious Redeemer, Savior,
the Amen and my salvation.

No one, but Him
will be there for me.

Now when we come to
the end of our resources

and we feel like the
whole world is against us,

the people around us look small

and God begins to look bigger.

Many times when
I'm in an airplane

and we're taking off
as we're on the ground

before takeoff you look around

every thing looks normal,
but as you begin the takeoff

and you begin to
reach that cruising altitude

and you begin to look
down the world looks what,

the world looks really small.

The world looks really small

and that's what
God would wants us,

how God would want
us to see the world.

He would want us to
view the world small.

He would want us to look
at the people in our life.

And when I say, small,
I mean spiritually small,

meaning that
they're not a crutch for us,

but that we have a
relationship with God

and that Jesus is our crutch.

Now notice Jesus says,
"Wilt thou be made whole."

Notice the individual,

the man with the infirmity
didn't even hear Jesus,

didn't even hear Jesus.

Notice what the
verse says in John 5.

John 5, verse 7,
"And the impotent man
00:11:47.36\00:11:54.01
answered him,
saying Sir, I have no man,

when the water is troubled,
00:11:58.64\00:12:00.42
to put me into the
pool, but while I am coming,
00:12:00.43\00:12:05.16
another person
steppeth down before me."

No one has, he didn't
even hear what Jesus said,

Jesus asked him if
he wanted to be made

whole then
automatically his eyes went in

and focused in on his situation
00:12:20.17\00:12:23.04
and what he was a
custom to thinking
00:12:23.05\00:12:25.99
how he could get
out of his situation.

Meaning the tradition had

that he had to
go down at the pool,
00:12:30.25\00:12:31.70
someone would have to take him
00:12:31.71\00:12:33.02
in there and no one would,

no one has been
there for him to be able

to take him down there.

And even if I've
seen some strange

coincidence,
someone thus show up,

he can't get down
there quick enough.

Yet Jesus said,
"Wilt thou be made whole."

We often follow the
pattern of this man.

Jesus is standing
next to us offering us

wholeness and we're
trying to get Jesus to help us.

Notice Jesus, once again said,

and the man said I have no one,

kind of dropping a little hint,

will you take me down there.

Jesus has great plans for us,

greater plans than
we can ever imagine,

but we begin to focus
entirely in on our plan

and on the
obstacle in front of us.

That is very difficult for

As I've shared in
the past, growing up

I felt that my
father did not love me.

That was my perception,

and it was a wrong perception,

but that's what I felt.

And sometimes
perception can become reality

if we focus in on
the fly on the wall.

I began to get in
to competitive sports,

football, basketball.

I was MVP of both
sports, through high school.

Graduated high school,

said I would
never play sports again.

Went to a football game
at the local junior college,

Sacramento City
college and got bite by the bug

went out for the football team,

made the local football team,
we are fifth in the nation,

I got hurt and I
realized very quickly

that there weren't too many

5 foot 7 Greek
white receivers in the NFL

and kind of gave up on football.
00:14:56.23\00:14:58.24
Then I got into
competitive bass fishing.

You notice the pattern here.

I am going from one competition
00:15:03.17\00:15:05.58
to the next, to the next.
00:15:05.59\00:15:07.16
I found out
very early in my age,

I found out that when
you compete it and performed,

that you had the admiration
and the flattery of others.

And I ate these,
sweet little morsels up

being filled up inside feeling

that everything was great

when I would perform
on the football field

or on the basketball field.

And then even later on

when I got into competitive
bass fishing, you know,

if you did good
and finished high

which I didn't
do too many times,

but when I did I
felt pretty good.

Until you realize
the whole in your heart

that you are trying
to fill for your father's

unconditional affectionate love

can only be filled
by your heavenly Father.

At times in high
school, I would go home

game winning free throw,

pass, or a kick off run.

And I come out of, I

of the stands and the fathers,

and the parents and the families

would pat on the back.

And my father wasn't there,

working and it felt good

So many of us are
carrying a pool around with us.

As a pastor I see
this many, many times,

many people in the church

are looking at the
pools in front of them.

They are looking at
the pool, some of us,

you know, that's the point,

that just came-- a
thought that came to me now

sometimes it's a pool
00:16:52.45\00:16:53.97
and other times
its multiple pools.

Some of us have more
than one pool in front of us.

We come to this pool or pools

and we're so
focusing on the pool

that we miss the great physician

and the healer
who wants to touch us.

I have done that
in my life many times

the experience
with my father was one.

The second time I
can share with you

as I grew up not
being a trusting person.

I didn't trust
any one, only myself.

I had an eye problem, I
couldn't see past myself.

I can only trust myself.

And so when I began to
have relationships with people,

friendships with individuals,

I was always looking

how someone was
going to hurt me.

I was always looking
around the corner wondering,

okay, what's
going to happen next.

I know something is
going to happen, it has to.

I was always looking
at the glass half empty

and not looking at it half full.

And these types of
scars can so paralyze us,

so paralyze us, they
can leave us in such a state

that not only
does they paralyze us,

but it hurts all
of those around us.

When Jesus came on earth,

in His disciples.

to go do ministry.

Some of them weren't even
fully converted at the time
