My name is William Shea, 00:00:30.80\00:00:31.95 I am a retired seminary professor. 00:00:31.96\00:00:34.44 Welcome to Faith Chapel. 00:00:34.94\00:00:36.52 Our topic today is Christ 00:00:36.53\00:00:38.27 in the heart of the book of Daniel. 00:00:38.28\00:00:40.06 Let us pray. Loving Father, 00:00:40.07\00:00:42.89 we thank you for the messages 00:00:42.90\00:00:44.54 which you gave to your servants of old. 00:00:44.55\00:00:47.04 We thank you for that light 00:00:47.52\00:00:48.76 that it sheds on our pathway, 00:00:48.77\00:00:50.74 and we ask for Your Holy Spirit to lead us 00:00:50.75\00:00:53.01 and guide us now in your path, 00:00:53.02\00:00:55.51 in Jesus name, amen. 00:00:55.52\00:00:58.15 The book of Daniel divides in half. 00:00:59.09\00:01:01.49 There is a historical half that's Chapters 1 to 6 00:01:01.50\00:01:04.98 and a prophetic half that's Chapter 7 to 12. 00:01:04.99\00:01:09.04 If we think about the heart of the book 00:01:09.79\00:01:11.33 we look at the beginning of 00:01:11.34\00:01:12.85 the prophetic section Chapter 7, 8 and 9. 00:01:12.86\00:01:16.30 And that's what we're going to be studying today. 00:01:16.31\00:01:18.84 We're going to do them in reverse order. 00:01:19.52\00:01:21.28 We're gonna start with Chapter 9 and back up 00:01:21.29\00:01:23.47 to Chapter 8 and then end with Chapter 7. 00:01:23.48\00:01:26.49 And we'll do that for the reasons 00:01:26.50\00:01:27.86 which you will find out later when 00:01:27.87\00:01:29.93 we get further into our message. 00:01:29.94\00:01:32.87 Chapter 9 opens with Daniel the prophet 00:01:32.88\00:01:35.68 on his knees with the open word before him. 00:01:35.69\00:01:39.89 He has the scroll of Jeremiah and he is 00:01:39.90\00:01:42.50 looking at that's scroll and reading it, 00:01:42.51\00:01:44.56 and seeing what we would call Jeremiah Chapter 25, 00:01:44.57\00:01:48.18 which promise that the people of God would only 00:01:48.19\00:01:50.40 be in Babylonian captivity for seventy years, 00:01:50.41\00:01:53.11 and he has been there almost that long himself. 00:01:53.12\00:01:56.33 So he is praying for God to fulfill his word 00:01:56.34\00:01:59.26 to send his people back to their land, 00:01:59.27\00:02:01.81 to rebuild the city, to rebuild the country, 00:02:01.82\00:02:04.99 and to rebuild the temple. 00:02:05.00\00:02:06.89 God sends the angle Gabriel to him 00:02:06.90\00:02:09.49 and Gabriel brings him a message, 00:02:09.50\00:02:11.42 and the message basically is yes, 00:02:11.43\00:02:13.85 your city, your country, 00:02:13.86\00:02:15.75 and your temple will be rebuild. 00:02:15.76\00:02:17.82 But I am going to tell you more, 00:02:17.83\00:02:19.83 I am going to tell you what's going 00:02:19.84\00:02:21.49 to happen five centuries further down the line 00:02:21.50\00:02:24.87 because I am going to tell you what's going 00:02:24.88\00:02:27.13 to happen when the Messiah comes. 00:02:27.14\00:02:29.41 And so we have a messianic prophecy here 00:02:29.42\00:02:31.82 and I want to look at verse 24, Daniel 9:24. 00:02:31.83\00:02:35.73 Seventy weeks are determined upon your people, 00:02:36.71\00:02:40.35 and your holy city, to finish the transgression, 00:02:40.36\00:02:43.46 to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation 00:02:43.47\00:02:46.51 for iniquity, and to bring 00:02:46.52\00:02:48.21 in everlasting righteousness, 00:02:48.22\00:02:50.23 and seal up the vision and prophecy, 00:02:50.24\00:02:52.30 and to anoint the most Holy. 00:02:52.31\00:02:54.39 I want you to notice especially 00:02:54.40\00:02:55.93 the middle pair of these two statements 00:02:55.94\00:02:59.11 to atone for iniquity and to bring 00:02:59.12\00:03:02.08 in everlasting righteousness. 00:03:02.09\00:03:04.13 There was a problem in the Old Testament system 00:03:04.14\00:03:06.98 and the problem was that the people kept sinning 00:03:06.99\00:03:09.73 and so they would take an animal sacrifice 00:03:09.74\00:03:12.03 to the temple, and that would atone for that sin 00:03:12.04\00:03:15.94 but then they would sin again 00:03:15.95\00:03:17.27 they take another sacrifice and on and on, 00:03:17.28\00:03:20.16 this round of ceremonies went. 00:03:20.17\00:03:22.47 So they needed something greater, 00:03:22.48\00:03:24.82 they needed something more definitive. 00:03:24.83\00:03:27.70 And so they needed what we've called V atone, 00:03:27.71\00:03:30.33 with the capital T and a capital A. 00:03:30.34\00:03:33.13 That attornment came when Jesus of Nazareth 00:03:34.06\00:03:37.58 died on the Cross of Calvary 00:03:37.59\00:03:39.61 that was the great antitype of those 00:03:39.62\00:03:42.66 Old Testament sacrifices. 00:03:42.67\00:03:44.42 Those Old Testament sacrifices look forward 00:03:44.43\00:03:47.24 to the Cross of Jesus and the death of Jesus 00:03:47.25\00:03:49.66 as he made the great final atonement for iniquity. 00:03:49.67\00:03:53.52 And this happens within this 490 period 00:03:53.53\00:03:57.28 that we have of this prophecy, 00:03:57.29\00:04:00.43 and that brings in something else. 00:04:00.44\00:04:02.44 There is a result that flowed from the cross. 00:04:02.45\00:04:06.18 And it says to bring in everlasting righteousness 00:04:07.15\00:04:12.02 you see the righteousness that Jesus obtain on the 00:04:12.03\00:04:14.73 cross by His death and His atonement was not a 00:04:14.74\00:04:18.47 temporary righteousness, 00:04:18.48\00:04:19.76 like the Old Testament sacrifices. 00:04:19.77\00:04:21.97 It was permanently available and still is 00:04:21.98\00:04:24.91 available today 2000 years from the time 00:04:24.92\00:04:28.32 that Jesus died. It is still available 00:04:28.33\00:04:31.58 for you and me today. 00:04:31.59\00:04:33.54 This righteousness and its effects will go 00:04:33.55\00:04:37.09 on into eternity. So here is the first 00:04:37.10\00:04:40.20 two statements about the work of Jesus 00:04:40.21\00:04:42.51 in this prophecy. The next statement 00:04:42.52\00:04:45.21 comes in verse 25 which give us the date 00:04:45.22\00:04:48.30 for the coming of the Messiah, 00:04:48.31\00:04:50.21 and I won't work through the mathematics 00:04:50.22\00:04:52.02 of that for you. But are you perhaps 00:04:52.03\00:04:54.37 studied out the dates that we've used commonly 00:04:54.38\00:04:57.35 457 BC the time of Artaxerxes decree 00:04:57.36\00:05:01.18 in Chapter 7 of the book of Ezra reaches 00:05:01.19\00:05:03.82 to the beginning of the Jesus ministry in 27 AD. 00:05:03.83\00:05:08.26 And the word Messiah of course means 00:05:09.18\00:05:10.95 anointed one and Jesus was anointed 00:05:10.96\00:05:13.83 at the Jordan River by the John the Baptist 00:05:13.84\00:05:15.80 to begin his public ministry. 00:05:15.81\00:05:18.05 So the prophecy the third point about Jesus 00:05:18.56\00:05:21.62 in this prophecy is it gives the time 00:05:21.63\00:05:24.16 when the Messiah would come. 00:05:24.17\00:05:26.00 But then on a sadder note it tells us 00:05:26.01\00:05:29.10 what would happen to Him because he goes on 00:05:29.11\00:05:32.30 to say in verse 25 that the next event 00:05:32.31\00:05:37.53 in the prophecy is the Messiah would be 00:05:37.54\00:05:39.89 cut off, cut off in his idiom for to be killed 00:05:39.90\00:05:43.74 and you noticed the verb is in the passive, 00:05:43.75\00:05:46.06 somebody else was going to do this to him. 00:05:46.07\00:05:49.30 And so we have the fulfillment of this 00:05:49.31\00:05:51.40 as we look at the Gospels. 00:05:51.41\00:05:53.18 When we see the Roman troops 00:05:53.19\00:05:55.37 crucifying Jesus hanging Him on 00:05:55.38\00:05:58.47 the Cross of Golgotha or Calvary. 00:05:58.48\00:06:02.46 So we have the date, we have the event 00:06:03.67\00:06:07.03 the death of Jesus. He was not, 00:06:07.04\00:06:09.54 the Messiah was not to live out an ordinary 00:06:09.55\00:06:12.24 normal lifetime, His life would be cut shot by 00:06:12.25\00:06:15.94 the crucifixion. And so that was fulfilled 00:06:15.95\00:06:18.80 in the experience of Jesus of Nazareth. 00:06:18.81\00:06:21.71 Then when we come to verse 27 00:06:21.72\00:06:23.89 we have two more great acts. 00:06:23.90\00:06:26.26 He will confirm the covenant with many for one week. 00:06:26.27\00:06:29.67 That's the 70th week of this prophecy, 00:06:29.68\00:06:32.45 or the last seven years and is in the midst of 00:06:32.46\00:06:35.64 that week that Jesus was cut off. 00:06:35.65\00:06:38.19 Jesus was the messenger of the covenant, 00:06:39.51\00:06:41.80 He came to confirm the covenant. 00:06:41.81\00:06:43.85 He came to offer the covenant, 00:06:43.86\00:06:45.51 and the greatest benefits and blessings 00:06:45.52\00:06:48.96 that it could offer. And so if you look 00:06:48.97\00:06:52.11 at the Sermon on the Mount, 00:06:52.12\00:06:53.53 you can see how He says, 00:06:53.54\00:06:55.17 you have heard that it has been set of old. 00:06:55.18\00:06:57.74 But now I say on to you, 00:06:57.75\00:06:59.78 and He takes the commandments of 00:06:59.79\00:07:01.22 the old covenant and amplifies them 00:07:01.23\00:07:03.84 and puts the microscope on them 00:07:03.85\00:07:05.54 and shows that they are not just external actions 00:07:05.55\00:07:08.48 but there it go down deep into the heart. 00:07:08.49\00:07:10.99 And so Jesus is the messenger of the covenant, 00:07:11.00\00:07:14.03 who came to make that offer the covenant. 00:07:14.04\00:07:16.30 It's the last week, the last seven years of 00:07:16.31\00:07:20.12 the old covenant soon to be replace by 00:07:20.13\00:07:22.82 the new covenant beginning when Jesus 00:07:22.83\00:07:25.47 died on the cross. Then its says, 00:07:25.48\00:07:28.04 He will in the midst of the week he shall cause 00:07:28.05\00:07:31.90 the sacrifice and oblation or grain offering to cease. 00:07:31.91\00:07:35.87 There is a little bit of a problem here, 00:07:35.88\00:07:38.16 because when Jesus died the sacrifice 00:07:38.17\00:07:41.87 and offering in the temple 00:07:41.88\00:07:42.85 went on for another 40 years. 00:07:42.86\00:07:44.72 But now it was in the different category. 00:07:44.73\00:07:47.50 Now it was an empty round of ceremonies 00:07:47.51\00:07:51.01 because type of the Old Testament system 00:07:51.02\00:07:53.53 had met the antitype in the death of Jesus, 00:07:53.54\00:07:56.49 and the Old Testament sacrifices were no 00:07:56.50\00:07:58.61 longer necessary. And God showed that 00:07:58.62\00:08:00.94 if you remember by rending the veil in the temple. 00:08:00.95\00:08:04.18 Well we have six great facts here about 00:08:04.63\00:08:07.48 the Messiahship of Jesus of Nazareth. 00:08:07.49\00:08:10.26 It tells us that He would make the great atonement 00:08:10.27\00:08:12.64 for sin that would produce everlasting righteousness 00:08:12.65\00:08:16.34 that's available for us today. 00:08:16.35\00:08:18.32 It tells us when He would come, 00:08:18.33\00:08:20.83 it tells us that He would die. 00:08:20.84\00:08:24.16 And it tells us what would happen 00:08:24.73\00:08:26.38 to the sacrificial system and that He would make 00:08:26.39\00:08:29.68 the final offer of the Old Testament covenant. 00:08:29.69\00:08:32.79 If we summarize all this and put it into 00:08:32.80\00:08:35.57 one word picture, we can say this is the picture 00:08:35.58\00:08:38.84 in Daniel 9 of Christ as sacrifice. 00:08:38.85\00:08:43.14 Now lets backup and go to Chapter 8. 00:08:43.15\00:08:46.11 In Chapter 8 we have, we start of with two 00:08:48.04\00:08:51.72 animal symbols; first there is the Persia ram, 00:08:51.73\00:08:55.28 and this ram is identified in verse 20 as Medo-Persia. 00:08:55.29\00:09:00.06 And this is followed by the Greek goat 00:09:00.07\00:09:02.60 and that's identified as Greece in verse 21. 00:09:02.61\00:09:06.12 And so the Persian ram starts out doing 00:09:06.13\00:09:09.30 its conquest, and then the Greek goat does 00:09:09.31\00:09:12.59 its conquest, and then there is big clash 00:09:12.60\00:09:15.49 between the two and the Greek goat wins. 00:09:15.50\00:09:18.69 And the Greek goat has his first great horn, 00:09:18.70\00:09:21.69 and that first great horn of course, 00:09:21.70\00:09:23.20 we know so well is Alexander. 00:09:23.21\00:09:25.52 But Alexander did not live out a full life, 00:09:25.53\00:09:28.55 he too died at a very young age in his thirties. 00:09:28.56\00:09:32.10 And so his kingdom, his empire was split up 00:09:32.11\00:09:34.89 into four pieces, and those four pieces 00:09:34.90\00:09:37.82 were divided among the generals of Alexander, 00:09:37.83\00:09:40.66 one general took Greece, 00:09:40.67\00:09:41.82 one general took Asia Minor, 00:09:41.83\00:09:43.48 one general took Syria and Babylon, 00:09:43.49\00:09:45.49 and one general took Egypt. 00:09:45.50\00:09:47.43 And then there is the fifth horn as the symbol, 00:09:48.52\00:09:51.51 horn symbol is used that comes onto 00:09:51.52\00:09:53.20 the scene of action and basically 00:09:53.21\00:09:54.95 it picks off one by one, and picks off 00:09:54.96\00:09:57.09 all these pieces of the Greek empire. 00:09:57.10\00:10:00.20 And Rome has taken the Eastern Mediterranean 00:10:00.21\00:10:03.76 basin and even it mentions the glorious land. 00:10:03.77\00:10:07.98 The Roman general Pompey arrived in Judea in 60 BC. 00:10:07.99\00:10:15.40 And he conquered the city after brief resistance, 00:10:16.14\00:10:20.27 and he merged in to the temple. 00:10:20.28\00:10:22.00 He wanted to see what the God of Israel look like, 00:10:22.01\00:10:24.20 what the statue, what the image look like. 00:10:24.21\00:10:26.91 The priest protested please don't go 00:10:26.92\00:10:28.74 in there you will contaminate our temple, 00:10:28.75\00:10:30.25 but he march in anyway and found to his shock 00:10:30.26\00:10:33.11 and surprise an empty room. 00:10:33.12\00:10:35.23 You may remember the Ark of the Covenant 00:10:35.24\00:10:37.02 had been hidden at the time of Nebuchadnezzar's 00:10:37.03\00:10:39.68 conquest six centuries earlier, 00:10:39.69\00:10:42.19 and it was not found or replaced 00:10:42.20\00:10:44.44 or put in the second temple. 00:10:44.45\00:10:46.33 And so Rome has taken possession of Judea 00:10:46.76\00:10:50.22 and Jerusalem and all of the Near East. 00:10:50.23\00:10:53.54 Now this phase of Rome then begins 00:10:55.97\00:11:00.08 and attack in a different direction, 00:11:00.09\00:11:02.26 it begins an attack on heaven. 00:11:02.27\00:11:04.50 And there we have the prince of 00:11:04.51\00:11:07.17 the host in heaven, and the prince of 00:11:07.18\00:11:10.23 the host in heaven is another symbolic 00:11:10.24\00:11:12.66 representation of Jesus Christ. 00:11:12.67\00:11:15.03 He is the leader of the host of the people of God. 00:11:15.04\00:11:18.52 And he previously in his earthly ministry 00:11:18.53\00:11:24.78 now has gone on through the ascension 00:11:24.79\00:11:28.19 to take His heavenly ministry. 00:11:28.20\00:11:30.64 And it says in Chapter 8 here 00:11:30.65\00:11:33.20 that the sanctuary belongs to Him 00:11:33.21\00:11:35.04 and the daily or continual ministry belongs to Him. 00:11:35.05\00:11:38.74 So it's a picture of a priestly ministry in heaven 00:11:38.75\00:11:41.97 and that's what, we have today. 00:11:41.98\00:11:44.05 We have heavenly sanctuary working on our behalf, 00:11:44.06\00:11:47.88 there Jesus and His Father minister on our behalf, 00:11:47.89\00:11:52.12 they send the angles, they send the Holy Spirit 00:11:52.13\00:11:54.35 pleading intersession answering our prayers. 00:11:54.36\00:11:57.43 This is the daily ministry that goes on 00:11:57.44\00:11:59.62 for the redemption of 00:11:59.63\00:12:00.94 the human race in the world today. 00:12:00.95\00:12:03.36 But this earthly power attempt to subvert 00:12:03.37\00:12:06.94 or direct people's attention away from 00:12:06.95\00:12:09.04 the heavenly sanctuary to earthly powers, 00:12:09.05\00:12:11.84 earthly experience, and so there is 00:12:11.85\00:12:14.22 this conflict and, how do you resolve 00:12:14.23\00:12:16.01 this conflict? You resolve 00:12:16.02\00:12:17.75 this conflict by judgment, 00:12:17.76\00:12:19.32 and that's what comes at the end of the prophetic 00:12:19.33\00:12:21.94 time period that's mentioned here 2300 00:12:21.95\00:12:24.88 evening, mornings which is mentioned 00:12:24.89\00:12:26.85 in verse 14 Chapter 8. And at the end of 00:12:26.86\00:12:29.81 the long time period which using 00:12:29.82\00:12:32.41 the rule of the day for year in prophecy bring 00:12:32.42\00:12:35.28 us to 1844 and then begins a 00:12:35.29\00:12:38.79 heavenly judgment to demonstrate the truth 00:12:38.80\00:12:41.53 or the plan of God salvation, 00:12:41.54\00:12:43.44 and the falsehood of human inventions 00:12:43.45\00:12:47.57 in contrast to it. Now if we ask 00:12:47.58\00:12:50.68 what kind of picture do we have of Jesus here, 00:12:50.69\00:12:53.38 is a picture of Jesus as priest. 00:12:53.39\00:12:56.91 He is the one to whom the sanctuary belongs, 00:12:56.92\00:13:00.40 He is the one to whom the ministry is given, 00:13:00.41\00:13:03.20 and He is the one who carries out that 00:13:03.21\00:13:04.85 ministry in that heavenly sanctuary. 00:13:04.86\00:13:07.56 So the second picture we have here is 00:13:07.57\00:13:10.61 of Jesus as priest. Let's keep these 00:13:10.62\00:13:14.22 pictures in mind, Jesus' sacrifice in Daniel 9, 00:13:14.23\00:13:18.93 Jesus as priest in Daniel 8. 00:13:18.94\00:13:21.68 Now let's go back to Daniel 7. 00:13:21.69\00:13:24.10 Daniel 7 has this picture of these four symbols 00:13:26.43\00:13:29.01 of these four animals. And these four animals 00:13:29.02\00:13:31.96 give us progressively a lion, a bear, 00:13:31.97\00:13:35.79 a leopard and nondescript beast. 00:13:35.80\00:13:39.54 And as we look at the fulfillment in history 00:13:39.55\00:13:42.75 we start off with Daniel's own time, 00:13:42.76\00:13:45.26 so the lion is Babylon and in deed on 00:13:45.27\00:13:48.85 the walls of Babylon the great entryway 00:13:48.86\00:13:51.59 we have depictions of lions, 00:13:51.60\00:13:53.49 and we have depictions of lions on 00:13:53.50\00:13:55.58 the walls of the palace as the exequatur 00:13:55.59\00:13:58.33 has found them in enamel colored 00:13:58.34\00:14:00.74 and enamel bricks, and these lions are 6 feet 00:14:00.75\00:14:03.59 about 6 feet long from nose to tail. 00:14:03.60\00:14:05.99 So we have beautiful depictions of the lion 00:14:06.00\00:14:09.42 of Babylon in Babylonian art itself. 00:14:09.43\00:14:13.25 Now the Babylonians had little different conception. 00:14:13.26\00:14:15.93 They thought of their God writing on 00:14:15.94\00:14:19.00 the back of this lion so they it was not just 00:14:19.01\00:14:22.39 that they loved animals, it was to show the truth 00:14:22.40\00:14:25.04 and power and strength of the God of Babylon. 00:14:25.05\00:14:28.06 But the God of the Bible was greater than 00:14:28.07\00:14:30.25 the God of Babylon as Daniel revealed to them. 00:14:30.26\00:14:33.67 And so Daniel now reveals that the lion of Babylon 00:14:33.68\00:14:37.36 and after this will come another kingdom 00:14:37.37\00:14:40.69 he tells king Nebuchadnezzar inferior to you, 00:14:40.70\00:14:43.55 the Persians came and conquer Babylon 00:14:43.56\00:14:46.15 and that we find right in Chapter 5 00:14:46.16\00:14:48.35 of the book of Daniel. 00:14:48.36\00:14:50.02 And so we have the first transition 00:14:51.30\00:14:53.11 from these first two symbolic beast 00:14:53.12\00:14:55.43 from the lion of Babylon to the bear 00:14:55.44\00:14:57.89 of Medo-Persia right in the book of Daniel 00:14:57.90\00:15:00.56 itself in Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 00:15:00.57\00:15:02.98 the book starts out Daniel's experience starts 00:15:02.99\00:15:05.70 out under the new Babylonian king, 00:15:05.71\00:15:08.21 and then he is taking to the court room of 00:15:08.22\00:15:14.30 king Darius the Mede. Who was the sub 00:15:14.31\00:15:17.28 governor of Babylon under Cyrus of Persia. 00:15:17.29\00:15:20.81 Then comes the Greek leopard, 00:15:21.48\00:15:23.20 it's the same Greek king Alexander 00:15:23.21\00:15:25.57 that we read about in Chapter 8 00:15:25.58\00:15:27.91 and Alexander of course now is represented, 00:15:27.92\00:15:31.41 or his kingdom is represented by the leopard 00:15:31.42\00:15:33.73 that has four heads, four horns on 00:15:33.74\00:15:36.09 the great Greek goat in Chapter 8, 00:15:36.10\00:15:38.31 four heads on the leopard in Chapter 7, 00:15:38.32\00:15:41.22 its the same Greek kingdom. 00:15:41.23\00:15:43.63 And then following that comes this dreadful 00:15:43.64\00:15:46.55 and terrible beast that represents Rome, 00:15:46.56\00:15:49.49 its called the nondescript beast 00:15:49.50\00:15:50.94 because it doesn't connected 00:15:50.95\00:15:52.64 with the specific animal, it has parts of various 00:15:52.65\00:15:56.06 animals for instances it mentions his teeth of iron 00:15:56.07\00:15:59.36 and you may remember then in Daniel Chapter 2 00:15:59.37\00:16:02.49 the legs of iron represented Rome, 00:16:02.50\00:16:04.97 the might and power the crushing power of Rome 00:16:04.98\00:16:09.32 as it conquered the Mediterranean world 00:16:09.33\00:16:11.60 and world's farther I feel on that 00:16:11.61\00:16:14.76 all the way through Gall or France onto England. 00:16:14.77\00:16:18.20 And so Rome is now in the picture here 00:16:18.21\00:16:21.61 just as it was in Chapter 8. 00:16:21.62\00:16:24.81 But Rome does not last forever either 00:16:26.58\00:16:28.90 and so there is ten horns that come up 00:16:28.91\00:16:31.95 spring up on the head of this fourth beast 00:16:31.96\00:16:35.10 representing the divisions of Rome, 00:16:35.11\00:16:37.14 and this came about through the barbarian 00:16:37.15\00:16:40.50 conquest of Rome in the 5th and 6th century. 00:16:40.51\00:16:43.82 And so Rome felt to the Herali in 476 00:16:44.34\00:16:48.22 and the Ostrogoth dominated 00:16:48.23\00:16:50.79 the Italian peninsula for century or so. 00:16:50.80\00:16:53.50 And so Rome as an empire was gone, 00:16:53.51\00:16:56.60 and that's represented in this vision by the horns 00:16:56.61\00:17:01.02 and its represented in Daniel 2 the great image 00:17:01.03\00:17:04.34 by the iron mixed with clay. 00:17:04.35\00:17:06.80 And then we have the religious face of 00:17:07.09\00:17:10.04 this beast represented by the little horn 00:17:10.05\00:17:13.15 who speak words against the most high 00:17:13.16\00:17:15.81 and who persecutes and so on and so forth. 00:17:15.82\00:17:18.95 Now we have an answer from God 00:17:20.72\00:17:23.41 and the answer from God is that the, 00:17:23.42\00:17:26.55 the answer from God is set in the heavenly court. 00:17:26.56\00:17:30.24 And that brings us to our key text 00:17:30.25\00:17:33.38 which I think we can display on the screen 00:17:34.13\00:17:36.14 Daniel 7, verses 13 and 14. 00:17:36.15\00:17:39.45 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, 00:17:40.94\00:17:42.89 one like the Son of man came 00:17:42.90\00:17:44.38 with the clouds of heaven, 00:17:44.39\00:17:45.92 and came to the Ancient of days, 00:17:45.93\00:17:47.56 and they brought him near before him. 00:17:47.57\00:17:50.30 And there was given to him dominion, 00:17:51.86\00:17:53.76 and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, 00:17:53.77\00:17:55.54 nations, and languages, should serve him: 00:17:55.55\00:17:58.57 his dominion is an everlasting dominion, 00:17:58.58\00:18:01.54 which shall not pass away, and his kingdom 00:18:01.55\00:18:04.44 that which shall not be destroyed. 00:18:04.45\00:18:06.81 We have a scene here set in the heavenly court 00:18:06.82\00:18:09.66 back in verses 9 and 10 we have the ancient of 00:18:09.67\00:18:13.28 days coming and taking his seat 00:18:13.29\00:18:15.58 the angelic host gathers around him 00:18:15.59\00:18:18.25 the judgment are set, and the books are open. 00:18:18.26\00:18:21.37 That's the beginning scene of the 00:18:22.36\00:18:23.81 judgment in heaven which take place after 00:18:23.82\00:18:26.79 these four kingdoms have risen and fallen, 00:18:26.80\00:18:29.26 and after the experience of the little horn. 00:18:29.27\00:18:33.95 Then the end of this judgment scene 00:18:35.01\00:18:37.28 in portrait in which the Son of man, 00:18:37.29\00:18:39.71 and we know from the Gospels as Jesus Christ 00:18:39.72\00:18:42.44 comes to the ancient of days God the Father, 00:18:42.45\00:18:45.15 and there he received the kingdom. 00:18:45.16\00:18:47.03 Now if I give you the kingdom that makes 00:18:47.83\00:18:50.17 you the king. If God the Father gives Jesus Christ 00:18:50.18\00:18:53.91 the Son the kingdom that makes Jesus the king, 00:18:53.92\00:18:56.68 so the picture we have here is of Jesus as the king. 00:18:56.69\00:19:01.31 Now one way to study the Bible is to look 00:19:01.89\00:19:03.91 for keywords and a keyword in Daniel Chapter 7 00:19:03.92\00:19:07.60 is the word dominion, dominion. 00:19:07.61\00:19:10.87 And the question is who has dominion? 00:19:10.88\00:19:14.13 You see Babylon had dominion for while, 00:19:14.14\00:19:16.74 but then Babylon lost it and pass it along 00:19:16.75\00:19:19.16 to the Persians, and the Persian had 00:19:19.17\00:19:21.28 dominion for a while, but they lost 00:19:21.29\00:19:23.12 and passed it onto the Greeks, 00:19:23.13\00:19:24.59 and the Greek had dominion for while, 00:19:24.60\00:19:27.06 and then they passed it along to the Romans, 00:19:27.07\00:19:29.02 and they had dominion for while but it wasn't 00:19:29.03\00:19:30.85 permanent for them either. 00:19:30.86\00:19:32.21 And so there is this constants human state 00:19:32.76\00:19:35.86 of affairs where we're under different rulers 00:19:35.87\00:19:38.67 or different kingdoms and usually 00:19:38.68\00:19:41.29 or commonly the next one is worst than the first. 00:19:41.30\00:19:44.32 And the question is how long is this going 00:19:45.10\00:19:47.03 to go on, how long are we going to endure this? 00:19:47.04\00:19:49.37 And the answer is God has an answer for us, 00:19:49.38\00:19:52.45 set in the scene in the heavenly court 00:19:52.46\00:19:55.07 because there at the end of this judgment scene 00:19:55.08\00:19:58.34 he decrease that the Son of man will be 00:19:58.35\00:20:01.64 the great eternal permanent ruler, 00:20:01.65\00:20:04.59 and his dominion is not going to be like 00:20:04.60\00:20:06.93 the dominion of Babylon, or Greeks, 00:20:06.94\00:20:08.52 or Medo-Persia, His kingdom is going 00:20:08.53\00:20:11.57 to go on forever and ever, and ever. 00:20:11.58\00:20:14.04 And we have the opportunity to enter 00:20:14.05\00:20:16.86 into the kingdom because we're right 00:20:16.87\00:20:18.42 in this Chapter, we're in verse 27. 00:20:18.43\00:20:20.80 The saints of the Most High will receive 00:20:20.81\00:20:22.81 the kingdom. But before we get there, 00:20:22.82\00:20:25.47 let's, let's notice a little bit more about 00:20:25.48\00:20:29.85 Christ as king. When He comes 00:20:29.86\00:20:33.08 to the ancient of days and He receives the kingdom, 00:20:33.09\00:20:36.24 He then comes to take possession of His kingdom, 00:20:40.04\00:20:42.74 that is not shown to us in this prophecy. 00:20:42.75\00:20:45.50 Our spiritual four bears and the Millerite 00:20:45.51\00:20:48.56 movement believe this was the depiction 00:20:48.57\00:20:50.87 of the second coming of Christ 00:20:50.88\00:20:52.58 that is not correct. This is not a depiction of 00:20:52.59\00:20:55.45 the second coming of Christ. 00:20:55.46\00:20:56.90 The second coming of Christ takes place 00:20:56.91\00:20:59.28 subsequent to this. This is the scene of a 00:20:59.29\00:21:02.74 transition which take place in heaven, 00:21:02.75\00:21:04.69 and then when Jesus receives the kingdom, 00:21:04.70\00:21:07.97 He comes to earth in the clouds as described 00:21:07.98\00:21:11.26 in Revelation 1 and Mathew 24 and so forth. 00:21:11.27\00:21:15.75 And then He takes possession of the kingdom, 00:21:15.76\00:21:18.30 the physical possession of the kingdom. 00:21:18.31\00:21:20.15 He is given the titled kingdom in heaven 00:21:20.16\00:21:22.75 and then he is given possession of the kingdom 00:21:22.76\00:21:25.43 when he comes for His saints from all the ages 00:21:25.44\00:21:28.39 and at the resurrection. 00:21:28.40\00:21:30.24 Now we have before us these three pictures 00:21:31.63\00:21:35.67 word pictures of Jesus, and let's summarize 00:21:36.35\00:21:40.38 Daniel 9 is a picture of Christ to sacrifice. 00:21:40.39\00:21:44.86 Daniel 8 is a picture of Jesus as priest, 00:21:44.87\00:21:49.02 Daniel 7 is a picture of Jesus as king. 00:21:49.71\00:21:53.56 But if you have followed the sequence carefully 00:21:53.57\00:21:56.58 you may notice there is a little problem here 00:21:56.59\00:21:59.79 and the little problem is they seem to be in 00:21:59.80\00:22:02.97 reverse order from the way we think, 00:22:02.98\00:22:04.87 and that's true. Modern European philosophical 00:22:04.88\00:22:10.54 thinking reasoning reasons from cost to affect. 00:22:10.55\00:22:13.57 We collect the data, we make a theory, 00:22:13.58\00:22:16.39 we test the theory and then it becomes 00:22:16.40\00:22:19.02 the conclusion. Now the ancients 00:22:19.03\00:22:21.40 could do that too, we have then 00:22:21.41\00:22:22.71 in the book of Daniel where they follow 00:22:22.72\00:22:24.07 this chronological order. but they can also do 00:22:24.08\00:22:26.91 it in reverse order for example in Daniel 9 00:22:26.92\00:22:30.61 and we look at the summary verse is in verse 24 00:22:30.62\00:22:33.95 and then the detail verses follow, verses 25 to 27. 00:22:33.96\00:22:38.31 Let me give you a simple brief illustration 00:22:38.32\00:22:40.46 of this on the words of Jesus. 00:22:40.47\00:22:42.21 Jesus said where your treasure is, 00:22:42.22\00:22:46.82 there your heart be also, is that correct? 00:22:46.83\00:22:50.84 Yes, yes correct, but that's not the way 00:22:50.85\00:22:53.67 we would put it, because we would say 00:22:53.68\00:22:56.92 where your heart is, where your motive is 00:22:56.93\00:22:59.70 that's where you would put your treasure, 00:22:59.71\00:23:02.22 that's reasoning from cost to affect. 00:23:02.23\00:23:04.56 The Biblical statement of Jesus reasons 00:23:04.57\00:23:06.90 from affect where you have put your treasure 00:23:06.91\00:23:09.73 back to the cause where your heart is, 00:23:09.74\00:23:12.28 and that's what Daniel does here. 00:23:12.29\00:23:14.25 The first picture of Jesus is a Jesus as king 00:23:15.25\00:23:18.29 and in that picture we are supposed 00:23:19.27\00:23:22.55 to ask a question who is this, 00:23:22.56\00:23:25.31 where did He come from and how did He get 00:23:25.32\00:23:27.45 to be king? That takes us back to Chapter 8 00:23:27.46\00:23:31.31 because the subjects of the kingdom are 00:23:31.32\00:23:34.65 the ones for whom He is minister as priest. 00:23:34.66\00:23:38.08 Oh wait a minute, how did He get to be priest. 00:23:38.09\00:23:40.73 He got to be priest because He had a sacrifice. 00:23:40.74\00:23:44.64 Book of Hebrew says every priest has 00:23:44.65\00:23:47.79 to have a sacrifice to offer. 00:23:47.80\00:23:50.19 Jesus offered the sacrifice of Himself, 00:23:50.20\00:23:53.48 so we start out with the picture of Jesus 00:23:53.49\00:23:55.65 as king the result because He was the priest 00:23:55.66\00:23:59.93 who ministered for His subjects, 00:23:59.94\00:24:01.71 and that lead us back to the original cause 00:24:01.72\00:24:04.73 in the sacrifice that He gave of Himself. 00:24:04.74\00:24:07.50 So let summarize now, three pictures of Jesus, 00:24:07.51\00:24:11.79 Jesus as sacrifice, Jesus as priest, 00:24:11.80\00:24:15.17 and Jesus as king. Three works of 00:24:15.18\00:24:18.38 the plan of salvation with the atonement 00:24:18.39\00:24:22.26 of the sacrifice we get justification, 00:24:22.27\00:24:25.83 we are declared just because what Jesus 00:24:26.63\00:24:29.37 has done for us. His ministry for us 00:24:29.38\00:24:32.59 in heaven now give us all the benefits 00:24:32.60\00:24:34.89 that heaven can send to bring our life into 00:24:34.90\00:24:41.64 obedience to Christ, and that we call 00:24:41.65\00:24:45.00 sanctification, the picture of Jesus in heaven 00:24:45.01\00:24:48.99 now as He works for our sanctification 00:24:49.00\00:24:52.14 having saved us, He purifies us 00:24:52.15\00:24:54.73 and cleanses us, and that make us ready 00:24:54.74\00:24:58.38 for the kingdom to come. 00:24:58.39\00:24:59.63 And the picture in Chapter 7 is glorification, 00:24:59.64\00:25:03.94 three pictures of Jesus, three works of Jesus, 00:25:03.95\00:25:08.60 justification, sanctification, glorification. 00:25:08.61\00:25:12.96 Three time prophecies on different scales, 00:25:13.62\00:25:17.76 Daniel 9 five centuries 490 day years takes us 00:25:17.77\00:25:23.06 to the first century AD, Daniel 8 2300 days 00:25:23.07\00:25:27.49 that takes us to 1844 that's the intermediate 00:25:27.50\00:25:30.88 length prophecy to the beginning of the judgment, 00:25:30.89\00:25:33.55 but Daniel 7 takes us all the way into 00:25:33.56\00:25:36.07 the kingdom starts at Babylon finishes 00:25:36.08\00:25:38.94 in the kingdom, that's the longest prophecy. 00:25:38.95\00:25:41.50 Three pictures of Jesus, three works of Jesus, 00:25:41.51\00:25:45.45 three time prophecies on a short, medium 00:25:45.46\00:25:49.35 and long length scale, and three time tenses 00:25:49.36\00:25:53.64 are involved in this from our point of view today. 00:25:53.65\00:25:56.25 We look back to the cross, 00:25:56.26\00:25:58.29 we look up to heaven today, 00:25:58.30\00:26:00.42 and we look forward to the kingdom of God to come. 00:26:00.43\00:26:03.54 Now, this gives us a beautiful view 00:26:06.22\00:26:10.71 the plan of salvation as given to us 00:26:10.72\00:26:13.41 in the pictures of Jesus 00:26:13.42\00:26:15.19 in each of these three Chapters 00:26:15.20\00:26:17.00 in the heart of the book of Daniel. 00:26:17.01\00:26:18.65 But I want to tell you that this is not just 00:26:19.63\00:26:21.81 an academic exercise, not just something 00:26:21.82\00:26:24.39 you would teach in a seminary class, 00:26:24.40\00:26:26.37 this is personal, this is for you, 00:26:26.38\00:26:30.14 this is for Messiah, because as I look back 00:26:30.15\00:26:33.38 to the cross, I see Jesus as my sacrifice, 00:26:33.39\00:26:37.95 as my personal savior. 00:26:37.96\00:26:39.94 As I look up to him to heaven today, 00:26:39.95\00:26:42.60 I see him as the one who sends His angles 00:26:42.61\00:26:45.90 on the Holy Spirit to lead me on the road 00:26:45.91\00:26:48.70 to heaven to sanctify and purify my life 00:26:48.71\00:26:51.86 and your life.
