has, has intrigued and

motivated God's
people throughout time.

And it's also been
something that has been

a bit of
confusion among God's people
00:00:55.68\00:00:58.14
in these last days.
So, today we're gonna

explore from the
Bible, what the Bible says

about the work
of the Holy Spirit.

Let's pray and then
we'll dig into the word of

work of the Holy Spirit.

16, Jesus is discussing

about the fact that he is

leaving. In fact, there is a,

there is a long
discourse it actually begins

in about John 14. And
Jesus is, is telling his

disciples that he is
going to be leaving and,

he is telling them
that the Holy Spirit is

going to come
and the Spirit of God
00:02:01.40\00:02:03.84
is going to be there to
comfort them to minister
00:02:03.87\00:02:08.22
to them after
Jesus leaves. And then
00:02:08.25\00:02:12.02
John chapter 16
beginning in verse 8,

Jesus is speaking
about the Holy Spirit
00:02:15.01\00:02:18.26
and notice what he says, it says

in John 16 verse
8, "And when he comes,

he will convict the
world concerning sin
00:02:25.33\00:02:28.07
and
righteousness and judgment. "

When the Spirit of
God comes, the Bible says,

number one he is
going to convict the world

of sin righteousness
in judgment. Today,

we are gonna look at
three works of the Spirit

on the world and
three works of the Spirit

on believers. Okay, today again

we are gonna look at,
what the Spirit of God is

doing to the whole
world convicting of sin,

righteousness and
judgment. And then we are gonna

look at what the
Spirit of God does

in the life of
true believers. Okay,

so we read in verse
8, the Spirit of God

comes and convicts of
sin, righteousness and
00:03:06.71\00:03:10.22
judgment. Now, in
verse 9, the Bible tells us
00:03:10.25\00:03:13.72
why the Spirit of
God convicts of sin.
00:03:13.75\00:03:16.01
Verse 9, "Concerning sin,
because they do not believe
00:03:16.04\00:03:22.10
in me. " Now,
notice what the text in
00:03:22.13\00:03:25.43
scripture says, it
says, that the reason that the
00:03:25.46\00:03:27.80
Spirit of God
comes and convicts of sin
00:03:27.83\00:03:30.40
is because people do
not believe in Jesus.
00:03:30.43\00:03:34.46
So what we could say is
that when the Spirit of God
00:03:34.49\00:03:36.96
comes to the
whole world and convicts
00:03:36.99\00:03:39.53
individuals in the
world of their sin,
00:03:39.56\00:03:42.28
the Spirit is
actually trying to lead people

to believe in Jesus Christ.

And this is very
important because

what happens very
frequently in people's lives

is they begin
to study the Bible,

they begin to hear God's word,

they began to hear
the voice of the Spirit

convicting them and
when the Spirit of God is

convicting them of sin,
they begin to feel guilty

and frequently they
will say Oh! I don't

want to listen to you anymore.

I remember when
I was 18 years old,
00:04:14.86\00:04:17.37
I had left home after I
graduated from high school,
00:04:17.40\00:04:20.71
and I was living in
Wyoming, climbing rocks and
00:04:20.74\00:04:22.86
one day, on the
way home from Wyoming,
00:04:22.89\00:04:26.55
I decided to drive to
home to see my family,
00:04:26.58\00:04:28.69
I was driving across
Wyoming and there was,
00:04:28.72\00:04:31.77
there was nothing but AM radio.
00:04:31.80\00:04:33.89
And they had two
stations available in the
00:04:33.92\00:04:37.85
middle of Wyoming.
One was country music,
00:04:37.88\00:04:40.68
and which I wasn't
too fond of at the time,
00:04:40.71\00:04:44.02
and the other was Christian and.
00:04:44.05\00:04:47.25
So, I decided to
listen to the Christian
00:04:47.28\00:04:49.69
radio station, at the
time I was not a Christian,
00:04:49.72\00:04:51.99
I was actually an
atheist. So, I, I was just
00:04:52.02\00:04:54.18
listening on a whim
Or at least I thought
00:04:54.21\00:04:57.20
it was a whim at the
time, but it was really
00:04:57.23\00:04:58.92
the Spirit of God.
And I was listening and
00:04:58.95\00:05:01.40
I was listening I, I
was hearing a preacher
00:05:01.43\00:05:04.20
and who would have
ever thought at that
00:05:04.23\00:05:06.03
moment that I would
become a preacher someday.
00:05:06.06\00:05:07.82
I was listening to
the radio and as I was
00:05:07.85\00:05:10.62
listening to the
radio, I heard the preacher
00:05:10.65\00:05:12.39
preaching God's word. And
00:05:12.42\00:05:15.92
I began to sense
the Spirit of God

working there, I didn't
know it was the Spirit of God,
00:05:18.04\00:05:19.95
but I began to
feel guilty, I began
00:05:19.98\00:05:21.94
to feel contempt, I began to
00:05:21.97\00:05:24.93
sense the reality of my sin.
00:05:24.96\00:05:27.45
And in a fit of
rage, I punched my radio
00:05:27.48\00:05:32.80
to turn it off.
I was experiencing
00:05:32.83\00:05:37.15
the conviction of sin
and I, I didn't really
00:05:37.18\00:05:39.46
understand what to
do with it at the time?
00:05:39.49\00:05:41.84
The Spirit of
God convicts of sin,
00:05:41.87\00:05:44.67
not just to make us
feel bad, not to make us
00:05:44.70\00:05:47.15
feel guilty, but to
lead us to the place
00:05:47.18\00:05:50.26
where we put our
confidence, faith and
00:05:50.29\00:05:52.50
trust in Jesus
Christ. The reason the Spirit
00:05:52.53\00:05:55.89
convicts of sin, it's
not to make you feel bad,
00:05:55.92\00:05:58.12
it's not to make you
feel guilty, it's not to,
00:05:58.15\00:06:00.80
to make your life uncomfortable,
00:06:00.83\00:06:02.60
but it is to lead
you to the place where
00:06:02.63\00:06:05.03
you put your
confident trust in Jesus Christ.

Who died for your
sins and rose again

the third day. Now,
the second work of the
00:06:10.62\00:06:14.47
Spirit here for the
world is found in verse,
00:06:14.50\00:06:19.55
verse 10 actually. It says, That
00:06:19.58\00:06:24.37
he will convict, no not
only convict of sin, but he
00:06:24.40\00:06:26.56
will convict of
righteousness concerning
00:06:26.59\00:06:28.90
righteousness in
verse 10, because
00:06:28.93\00:06:31.15
I got to the
Father, and you will see
00:06:31.18\00:06:34.08
me no longer. It's
quite the esoteric verse,
00:06:34.11\00:06:38.04
it's always for a
long time it confused me,
00:06:38.07\00:06:41.22
it says, he convicts of sin,
00:06:41.25\00:06:42.74
so they we'll believe and
he convicts of righteousness
00:06:42.77\00:06:44.78
because Jesus
isn't around anymore,
00:06:44.81\00:06:46.51
he's gone to the
Father. I always puzzled
00:06:46.54\00:06:49.22
over that verse, why
does the Spirit convict me
00:06:49.25\00:06:52.18
of righteousness because
Jesus isn't going around,
00:06:52.21\00:06:55.99
isn't around
anymore. And then one day
00:06:56.02\00:06:59.53
it hit me. Jesus
Christ was the perfect
00:06:59.56\00:07:03.52
embodiment of
everything that was right,
00:07:03.55\00:07:07.59
everything that was
righteous, and when he
00:07:07.62\00:07:08.98
went to the Father,
we no longer have that
00:07:09.01\00:07:10.71
living, breathing
human example of what it
00:07:10.74\00:07:16.47
meant to be righteous.
And so the Spirit of God,

he, he not only
convicts of sin, what I have
00:07:19.82\00:07:22.56
done wrong, but
the Spirit of God comes

into the life as a, as
a, as an example of what
00:07:24.60\00:07:29.24
right living really
looks like. Jesus says,

as I've been here
living, I have been the
00:07:31.52\00:07:34.24
perfect example of
what right living, what
00:07:34.27\00:07:36.44
righteousness is? Now,
I'm gone, you don't see me
00:07:36.47\00:07:40.66
anymore, and so now
you have the Spirit of God
00:07:40.69\00:07:45.09
to convict you, to
show you what righteousness
00:07:45.12\00:07:48.89
really looks like. So,
the Spirit of God convicts you
00:07:48.92\00:07:51.40
of sin, what
you have done wrong,
00:07:51.43\00:07:53.07
it convicts you of
righteousness, what, what,
00:07:53.10\00:07:55.46
what right living
really looks like. And then the
00:07:55.49\00:07:58.01
third thing it
convicts you of is judgment,
00:07:58.04\00:07:59.88
and verse 10, verse
11 rather, it tells us
00:07:59.91\00:08:03.30
why the Spirit
convicts of judgment,
00:08:03.33\00:08:06.73
we'll read it now.
"Concerning judgment, because
00:08:06.76\00:08:10.54
the ruler of this
world is judged. "
00:08:10.57\00:08:15.96
Now, in the gospel of
John, the ruler of this
00:08:15.99\00:08:19.56
world is Satan. And
so it says, that we are
00:08:19.59\00:08:24.51
convicted by the
Spirit of God of judgment,
00:08:24.54\00:08:27.49
because the ruler of
this world is judged,
00:08:27.52\00:08:30.28
that is Satan is
judged and of course we know
00:08:30.31\00:08:33.31
he's judged
condemned. But why would God
00:08:33.34\00:08:36.43
convict me of
judgment because Satan
00:08:36.46\00:08:39.68
has been judged
condemned. Well, the answer
00:08:39.71\00:08:43.03
is very simple. It
goes something like this,
00:08:43.06\00:08:45.72
if Satan is judged
condemned for his sin,
00:08:45.75\00:08:50.00
how can his followers
expect to get off the hook.
00:08:50.03\00:08:55.18
You follow the
logic, in other words if, if
00:08:55.21\00:08:59.90
Satan has been
condemned for his sin,
00:08:59.93\00:09:02.82
how can we expect
the followers of Satan,
00:09:02.85\00:09:06.90
that is anybody that's
not the follower of the true
00:09:06.93\00:09:08.70
God to get off the
hook. So, follow what,

what Jesus has
said then. He says, the
00:09:11.73\00:09:13.75
Spirit of God comes to
convict of sin, righteousness
00:09:13.78\00:09:16.31
and judgment that
what he's doing to the
00:09:16.34\00:09:18.53
whole planet. He is
speaking to the hearts and
00:09:18.56\00:09:21.58
minds of every
human being on this planet
00:09:21.61\00:09:23.83
saying, you've
sinned, believe in Jesus,
00:09:23.86\00:09:27.89
he is taking care
of the sin problem.

This is what
righteousness really looks like.

This is what right
living really looks like and

the Spirit of God
says that he convicts of
00:09:36.11\00:09:39.25
judgment he says
that you will be judged

condemned just like
Satan was judged condemned,

if you refuse to
believe in Jesus.
00:09:44.37\00:09:47.41
And if you refuse to let
the Spirit of God teach you

what right living
looks like. You follow,

in other words he
convicts of sin, so you believe,

convicts of righteousness,
so that you'll know what's
00:09:56.67\00:09:59.32
really right and wrong,
and he convicts of judgment,

so that they will
actually make the decision.

So, that we will have
motivation to actually make

the decision to
believe in Jesus Christ.

So, the Spirit's job for
the world is to convict of sin,

righteousness and
judgment. Sin, so that they'll

believe, righteousness so
they'll know what's really

righteous inside
of God and judgment,
00:10:22.21\00:10:23.98
so that they know
the consequences of

refusing to believe
in Christ and refusing
00:10:27.46\00:10:30.92
to allow the Spirit to
give them a righteous life.

Convict of sin
righteousness and judgment,

but what happened
when somebody believes,

the Spirit of God is
working outside of you

convicting of sin.
So, that you'll believe,

what happens inside of
person once they become

a believer. Galatians
chapter 3 verses 2 through 6

clearly what happens when you

believe the
message of Jesus Christ?

Now, Paul goes through a
series of questions here.

And here they are,
let me ask you only this.

Did you receive the
Spirit by works of the law

or by hearing
with faith? Are you so

foolish having
begun by the Spirit,

are you now being
perfected by the flesh.
00:11:20.12\00:11:22.56
Did you suffer so
many things in vain, if

indeed it was in vain? Does he

who supplies the
Spirit to you and works

miracles among
you do so by the works

of the law, or by
hearing with faith,

just as Abraham
believed God, and it was counted

to him as
righteousness? Now, here Paul

is making a very simple point.

He is asking a
question, how does a person

receive the gift
of the Holy Spirit?

How does a
person get the Spirit?

And he asked the
question, do you get it?

By, by, by living a
certain way, or do you get it

by believing in Jesus
Christ. And the answer

is very simple that
when you believe you

receive the Spirit
of God. That when you

believe you
receive the Spirit of God,
00:12:09.48\00:12:12.07
but what does the Spirit
of God do once you believe.

We're gonna go to
Ephesians chapter 1,

go with me to
Ephesians chapter 1
00:12:18.93\00:12:22.53
and we are gonna
begin in verse 13.

We'll read 13 and
14. Again Paul makes the
00:12:25.02\00:12:28.38
point in him; you
also when you heard
00:12:28.41\00:12:32.45
the word of truth, the
gospel of your salvation,

and believed in him,
were sealed with the promised
00:12:36.91\00:12:41.57
Holy Spirit. Now,
notice what the Bible says

in verse 13 it
says, that after you hear

the gospel of your
salvation, you hear the

word of truth, the
gospel of your salvation

and you believe.
The Bible says that you

are sealed with the
promised Holy Spirit.

Now, we want to
understand this, this

very essential
point. The text says

that when you
believe the Spirit of God

comes in to the life.
We cannot miss that point.

My friends, the
moment somebody believes that

they're a sinner, and
that Jesus Christ died

for them on the
cross. When they believe

in the message of the
death burial resurrection

of Jesus Christ. The Bible says,

the Spirit of God
comes into that person

and seals them.
Now, what does that mean

that seal? Look in
verse 14, verse 14 gives us
00:13:35.25\00:13:40.20
the answer. It says, that
the Spirit is the guarantee
00:13:40.23\00:13:46.82
of our
inheritance until we acquire
00:13:46.85\00:13:50.79
possession of it, to
the praise of his glory.

So, it says, that the
Spirit is the guarantee

of our
inheritance until we acquire

possession of it, to
the praise of his glory.

What does that mean?
It's very simple and this

is the first work of
the Spirit for the believer.

The Spirit according to
this verse is the guarantee

of your
inheritance until you actually
00:14:15.44\00:14:19.07
get your inheritance.
Now, here your inheritance
00:14:19.10\00:14:22.95
is eternal life and
life with God and all of the
00:14:22.98\00:14:25.70
glory that goes along with it.

And it says that the
Spirit is your guarantee

of your inheritance.

Now, in the margin of
my Bible, in the margin of

many Bibles it says the
earnest of our inheritance

or the down
payment, now follow with me,

if you are gonna
buy something expensive.

Lets say you're gonna
buy a house, and let's say

the house costs a $100,
000, just to pick a figure.

And you are gonna buy
that house, but of course

you have to get a
mortgage to actually buy the

house, and you have to
fill all this paper workout etc,

etc, etc. Well, from the time
that you tell the seller that

you want to buy the
house until the time

you get all the mortgage and
the everything taken care of.

Let's say that that
period of time is a period of,

lets say three weeks.
Well, in between the time,

when you have
promised to buy the house.

And you actually
do buy the house;

you place a down
payment on the home.

And that down
payment lets the seller know

that you are absolutely
serious and absolutely

committed to
actually buying the house,

does that make sense?
In, in, in that way the

seller is protected from
you being dishonest with him.

And so, so the down
payment is, is the gift

seller as a guarantee that

Well, that's what the
Bible says the Spirit of God is.

Christ, and the Spirit of God

the Spirit is your guarantee

you. That's the first work

believer. For the unbeliever

of sin, you've sinned,

you should believe,
this is righteousness,

this is what right
living really looks like and

this is judgment, if
you refuse to believe,

these are the
consequences. So, when you

become a believer.
The Spirit of God comes in

He is the promise
that God is really gonna do
