Welcome to Faith Chapel. My name 00:00:30.79\00:00:32.44 is Lynell LaMountain the speaker and director 00:00:32.47\00:00:34.20 of Life Ignited. Today, we are gonna talk 00:00:34.23\00:00:36.05 about how to overcome failure before we get into 00:00:36.08\00:00:38.39 our Bible study let's pray and invite God's presence. 00:00:38.42\00:00:41.17 Father in Heaven, I thank you so much for being here 00:00:41.74\00:00:43.33 throughout today and I pray that as we study your 00:00:43.36\00:00:45.43 word that you would open up new truth to us 00:00:45.46\00:00:48.55 about how to overcome that thing, which hold us 00:00:48.89\00:00:51.61 back so often which is failure. Lord you are the 00:00:51.64\00:00:54.79 solution for failure help us see that and find that 00:00:54.82\00:00:57.44 today in your word is our prayer in your name Amen. 00:00:57.47\00:01:00.68 This is a story about a man who failed his best friend 00:01:02.50\00:01:05.87 of a man who believed his denial of his savior 00:01:07.31\00:01:10.29 had put him forever beyond the reach of redemption. 00:01:10.51\00:01:12.77 This is the story for anyone who feels here 00:01:12.80\00:01:16.36 she has really blown it big time anyone who feels 00:01:16.39\00:01:20.69 broken beyond repair this is a story of people 00:01:20.72\00:01:23.77 who feel irredeemable. This is a story of the weakness 00:01:23.80\00:01:27.63 of man, the story of the greatness of Jesus Christ 00:01:27.66\00:01:30.47 and his grace. This is a story about a man 00:01:30.50\00:01:33.44 who thought he thrown away the chance of a life time 00:01:33.47\00:01:35.90 just when Jesus had needed him most. Peter failed him 00:01:37.13\00:01:41.41 not just failed him, but denied him. He was filled 00:01:41.44\00:01:46.20 with self loving, he was crushed by guilt, 00:01:46.23\00:01:49.20 he was haunted by regret, he was disempowered by a sense, 00:01:49.23\00:01:52.31 a deep sense, a profound sense, a haunting sense 00:01:52.34\00:01:55.47 of his unworthiness. Peter decides to go away and 00:01:55.50\00:02:00.19 think about it for a while he decides to go fishing. 00:02:00.38\00:02:02.83 The Bible says in John chapter 21 verse 3, 00:02:02.86\00:02:06.29 the first half of verse 3. Simon Peter said to them, 00:02:06.32\00:02:09.60 "I am going fishing." Some of the others thought 00:02:10.14\00:02:13.40 it was good idea, so they tag along they get out the 00:02:13.43\00:02:15.72 mothballs boat, the mothball fishing gear and they 00:02:15.75\00:02:18.09 shake out the seal, sails in the head of deep water 00:02:18.12\00:02:20.81 have you ever felt like putting a sign on your door 00:02:22.23\00:02:24.19 it's says gone fishing. There is something being 00:02:24.22\00:02:27.00 going so terribly wrong in your life that you just 00:02:27.03\00:02:29.21 got to get away while a dust settles. We all have 00:02:29.24\00:02:32.95 these moments, where we just feel like saying 00:02:32.98\00:02:34.66 hey we are out here for a while, don't know 00:02:34.94\00:02:37.06 when they will be back, but they were gone fishing, 00:02:37.09\00:02:38.64 going to sort things through. In John chapter 21 00:02:39.24\00:02:43.28 and verse 3 starting with the second half, 00:02:43.31\00:02:45.11 the Bible says they said to him, "We are going 00:02:45.23\00:02:48.05 with you also." So they went out and immediately 00:02:48.08\00:02:50.36 got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. 00:02:50.39\00:02:53.63 Their fear and discouragement and doubt took them 00:02:54.41\00:02:56.82 back to where they first started when Jesus was 00:02:56.85\00:02:59.23 calling them, it took them back where they first 00:02:59.26\00:03:01.44 started that was away from Christ empty, hopeless, 00:03:01.47\00:03:07.05 and nets they were also empty they were right back 00:03:08.64\00:03:12.41 to square one. That night on the water they remembered 00:03:12.44\00:03:15.85 the good old days with Christ long before who have 00:03:15.88\00:03:18.16 been crucified. Memories of him calming the storm 00:03:18.19\00:03:20.97 of him walking on water and of Peter joining him 00:03:21.21\00:03:24.23 for a few minutes before Peter took his eyes off 00:03:24.26\00:03:26.64 Christ and started plunging into the depths. 00:03:26.67\00:03:28.62 Memories of him sitting in the boat with them teaching 00:03:29.40\00:03:31.64 the people lining the shore all of these memories came 00:03:31.67\00:03:34.40 back to them that night on the sea as they gotten away 00:03:34.43\00:03:37.51 from it all and fished. The hill upon, which the 00:03:37.54\00:03:40.15 5000 were fed wasn't far from where they were 00:03:40.18\00:03:42.77 and componium was on the other side of the lake, 00:03:42.80\00:03:45.43 but now they questioned there own future what once 00:03:45.46\00:03:49.39 look like a glorious future now seem it grimed, 00:03:49.42\00:03:52.39 it was dim, and it was black. The glimpse of the golden 00:03:52.42\00:03:57.54 morning burst through the blackness of the night 00:03:57.57\00:03:59.84 as midnight and noon trade it watch and Jesus was on 00:04:00.06\00:04:05.04 the shore. They didn't know it, but he was there 00:04:05.07\00:04:08.24 and he was watching. John 21 verses 4 and 5 00:04:08.87\00:04:13.51 in the new King James version reads But when 00:04:13.54\00:04:16.58 the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; 00:04:16.61\00:04:19.80 yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 00:04:19.83\00:04:22.44 Then Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any 00:04:22.89\00:04:25.93 food?" They answered him, "No." Something surprising 00:04:25.96\00:04:31.38 here to me is we actually find a group of fishermen 00:04:31.41\00:04:34.34 who tell the truth. Jesus asks them have you caught 00:04:34.37\00:04:37.49 anything and they say no, most of us would have said 00:04:37.52\00:04:40.63 yeah we have caught a lot, but we have it throw them 00:04:40.66\00:04:42.37 back but they answer honestly no we have nothing 00:04:42.40\00:04:45.72 our nets are empty. The second thing that strikes 00:04:45.75\00:04:49.09 me about this verse is a language Jesus uses 00:04:49.12\00:04:51.55 he just doesn't ask have you caught anything 00:04:51.58\00:04:54.05 and the Greek it reads have you caught anything boys, 00:04:54.56\00:04:58.02 got any fish kids. Not only they do not have any fish, 00:04:58.61\00:05:03.07 now as the stranger on the beach marking them 00:05:03.10\00:05:05.61 rubbing it in calling them children it is the only time 00:05:05.64\00:05:08.83 in the New Testament, where Jesus refers to them 00:05:08.86\00:05:10.68 as kids as boys, but I guess it's a third thing 00:05:10.71\00:05:14.86 about Christ question that makes me take notice 00:05:14.89\00:05:18.25 and it's this Christ question leaves them to 00:05:19.36\00:05:23.20 admit that they have failed, he wanted them to admit 00:05:23.23\00:05:27.76 the truth about themselves that apart from him 00:05:27.79\00:05:30.69 they had failed, apart from him their lives in their 00:05:31.84\00:05:35.67 nets would always be empty, so real question 00:05:35.70\00:05:40.22 to me go something like this. Find what are you 00:05:40.93\00:05:43.94 looking for boys so what he ask him that morning, 00:05:43.97\00:05:47.02 so what he asks me today, what he asks you 00:05:47.05\00:05:49.70 have you found what you are looking for it's your 00:05:49.86\00:05:52.60 life full is it satisfied, have you found what you 00:05:52.63\00:05:55.56 want. Jesus continues addressing them as children 00:05:55.59\00:05:59.68 by telling them what to do. In John 21 verse 6 00:05:59.71\00:06:02.72 And he said to them, "Cast the net on the right side 00:06:04.16\00:06:06.68 of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast, 00:06:06.71\00:06:11.55 and now they were not able to draw it in because of 00:06:11.58\00:06:13.64 the multitude of fish." This strange familiar voice 00:06:13.67\00:06:18.18 on the beach that goes across the water to them 00:06:18.21\00:06:20.26 try again if your nets are empty, try again, 00:06:20.29\00:06:23.75 so they put the nets down on the right hand of the 00:06:24.09\00:06:26.33 boat, which is interesting because that is the side of 00:06:26.36\00:06:29.28 the boat that was facing Jesus, the right side of 00:06:29.31\00:06:32.79 the boat, so they cast their nets and the text says 00:06:32.82\00:06:35.80 the nets were so full of fish that they could barely 00:06:35.83\00:06:38.39 pull them into the boat and then suddenly knee deepen 00:06:38.42\00:06:42.92 fish again they realized who the stranger is 00:06:42.95\00:06:45.91 on the beach it was Christ, Christ their Lord, 00:06:45.94\00:06:50.62 it was his voice, it was his power, it was his method, 00:06:51.38\00:06:54.18 it was his way, it way his miracle, it was him 00:06:54.21\00:06:57.14 once again meeting them, where they were he had 00:06:57.17\00:06:59.66 found them, he had come looking for them. He had 00:06:59.69\00:07:02.62 especially had come to looking for Peter, 00:07:02.65\00:07:04.61 Peter was so excited, I mean he can't stand himself 00:07:05.16\00:07:07.72 when he realizes that is Jesus on the beach. 00:07:07.75\00:07:10.16 And he is right back, where he started. A net bursting 00:07:10.19\00:07:12.90 at the seems of fish after a fruitless night of fishing 00:07:12.93\00:07:15.78 except Jesus wasn't in the boat with him this time 00:07:15.81\00:07:18.46 like he was in Luke chapter 5. Christ is on the shore, 00:07:18.49\00:07:20.75 but now Peter who had been following Christ 00:07:20.78\00:07:24.06 up until the denial is over joy with the power and 00:07:24.09\00:07:27.07 presence of Christ on the beach waiting for him 00:07:27.10\00:07:29.54 to close the distance. Overwhelm by the grace of 00:07:29.92\00:07:34.54 Christ, Peter takes off his jeans, he takes off his 00:07:34.57\00:07:39.29 lucky fishing shirt that he doesn't wash and as he 00:07:39.32\00:07:41.45 leaps into the water he is gone fishing hat, 00:07:41.48\00:07:43.87 is caught in the wind and blows away. I am not sure 00:07:44.21\00:07:51.23 what Jesus was thinking as he saw Peter's splash 00:07:51.26\00:07:53.78 towards him in the water, but I have a hunch 00:07:54.07\00:07:56.69 he was hap py and that he knew in his heart 00:07:57.75\00:08:00.56 that the cross have been worth it even if it meant 00:08:01.14\00:08:03.63 bringing Peter back, bringing him back home, 00:08:03.66\00:08:06.48 it was grace that was bringing Peter back to him 00:08:06.51\00:08:08.51 without grace Peter would have been swimming away 00:08:09.26\00:08:12.12 from Jesus, without grace Peter would have been going 00:08:12.15\00:08:14.21 in the other direction, without grace Peter 00:08:14.24\00:08:16.21 would have been trying to put as much distance 00:08:16.24\00:08:17.98 between him and God as he possibly could. 00:08:18.01\00:08:20.16 Just as fast as he could, but grace was offering him 00:08:20.72\00:08:23.62 a second chance and in that moment when Peter realized 00:08:23.65\00:08:27.11 it was Jesus, he realized to something else, 00:08:27.14\00:08:29.12 he realized that his failure wasn't final, 00:08:29.15\00:08:31.22 there was hope for tomorrow not only tomorrow there is 00:08:31.76\00:08:34.39 hope for today. He is very patient, this Lord of the 00:08:34.42\00:08:38.42 second chance when you say he doesn't easily give up on 00:08:38.45\00:08:41.85 people in fact he never does, he has never given 00:08:41.88\00:08:44.61 up on you and he never will. Peter slashed his forth 00:08:44.64\00:08:48.87 from the water and he runs toward Jesus and he drops 00:08:48.90\00:08:51.27 to his knees in the sand out of breath hand 00:08:51.30\00:08:53.10 on thighs, but Jesus doesn't say anything to Peter 00:08:53.13\00:08:55.65 just yet he just starts a fire to cook breakfast 00:08:55.68\00:08:58.61 as Peter gazes into that charcoal fire as John 00:08:59.20\00:09:02.60 tells us, he remembers the other night and another fire, 00:09:02.63\00:09:07.08 a charcoal fire, where he denied Jesus three times 00:09:07.97\00:09:11.66 while warming his hands. Peter smells the charcoal 00:09:11.69\00:09:16.05 and he remembers, he gazes at the dancing flames 00:09:16.37\00:09:20.89 and he remembers, he sees the nail prints in Christ's 00:09:20.92\00:09:25.18 hands and feet and he remembers; he faces 00:09:25.21\00:09:28.56 the truth, he faces the truth about himself 00:09:28.59\00:09:30.44 and the truth about what he had done and he remembers, 00:09:30.47\00:09:32.64 he felt naked because in that moment as he is looking 00:09:33.42\00:09:35.75 to the flames Jesus Christ had removed his masks, 00:09:35.78\00:09:39.89 all the Peter's masks gone. He couldn't pretend to be 00:09:39.92\00:09:44.52 spiritually healthy not today there was distance 00:09:44.55\00:09:47.51 between him and God; distance that he had chosen 00:09:47.54\00:09:50.00 to put there so Peter kneels by the charcoal fire. 00:09:50.03\00:09:53.74 He acknowledges the truth about who he is 00:09:54.06\00:09:56.33 and what he is done. Jesus knew the truth about who 00:09:57.30\00:10:00.79 Peter was and guess what he didn't leave, 00:10:00.82\00:10:05.19 Jesus didn't abandoned Peter. Jesus stayed there, 00:10:05.76\00:10:09.42 he still loved Peter, he loved leader, He loved Peter 00:10:10.33\00:10:12.76 more than life itself in fact he loved Peter 00:10:12.79\00:10:14.85 more than death and he stayed. The others join Jesus 00:10:14.88\00:10:20.61 and Peter for a breakfast of fish sticks and after 00:10:20.64\00:10:23.03 breakfast has finished Jesus says to Peter got a minute 00:10:23.06\00:10:26.84 can we just talk for a little bit there is something 00:10:26.87\00:10:29.24 on my heart, something on mind, something I wanna 00:10:29.27\00:10:32.51 ask and Peter he must have felt like a guy waiting 00:10:32.54\00:10:36.32 the guilty verdict. The disciples are looking on, 00:10:36.35\00:10:38.95 the are listening, he can only imagine what's coming 00:10:38.98\00:10:41.56 next, he feels vulnerable, he feels uncertain, 00:10:41.59\00:10:44.16 and than Jesus asks him this question 00:10:45.18\00:10:47.46 in John 21 verse 15. Jesus says so when they had eaten 00:10:47.99\00:10:53.21 breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of 00:10:53.24\00:10:56.26 Jonah, do you love me more than these? And he said 00:10:56.29\00:10:58.92 to him, yes Lord you know that I love you. He said 00:10:58.95\00:11:02.70 to him Feed my lambs. Think of all the things that Jesus 00:11:02.73\00:11:07.49 could have asked Peter, he could have asked Peter 00:11:07.52\00:11:10.95 are you sorry for what you've done, he could have 00:11:10.98\00:11:14.10 said Peter do you promise to never let it happen again, 00:11:14.13\00:11:17.32 Peter do you promise to try harder next time, 00:11:17.95\00:11:20.58 no, Jesus doesn't ask any of those questions, 00:11:21.49\00:11:24.44 he just says Peter I've been wondering about something, 00:11:24.47\00:11:27.27 do you still love me more than these? 00:11:28.86\00:11:30.62 Now Christ's heart is on the line, he is a vulnerable 00:11:32.33\00:11:35.60 one because when you ask that question do you love me, 00:11:35.63\00:11:38.80 you leave yourself totally exposed. My wife and I met 00:11:39.43\00:11:43.52 in college and I remember telling her that I liked her, 00:11:43.55\00:11:45.79 and I wanted to be with her, and I asked her she like 00:11:46.68\00:11:50.21 me back? And I was kind of imagining and hoping that 00:11:50.24\00:11:53.62 she would say something like this, I'm so captivated 00:11:53.65\00:11:56.71 by your charm and your sheer animal magnetism 00:11:56.74\00:11:58.91 that is all I can do to keep from rushing into your 00:11:58.94\00:12:01.18 arms and that is pretty much what she said it just took 00:12:01.21\00:12:05.71 me six months to get it our of her, when you ever ask 00:12:05.74\00:12:08.73 someone do you love me you are putting your heart 00:12:08.76\00:12:10.42 on the line it's a vulnerable moment, this is Christ 00:12:10.45\00:12:14.48 question to you today and to me do you love me? 00:12:14.51\00:12:17.36 It's a question he asked Peter except the Peter, 00:12:19.49\00:12:21.40 so he doesn't use Peter's nick name Peter, he uses 00:12:21.43\00:12:24.82 Peter's surname Simon son of John, he says Simon 00:12:24.85\00:12:28.37 son of John do you love me? It says if Jesus is saying 00:12:28.40\00:12:31.53 I won't presume that you still want the old intimate 00:12:31.56\00:12:34.11 relationship that we want to enjoy it and I won't 00:12:34.14\00:12:36.90 presume that you are still Peter, so Simon son of John 00:12:36.93\00:12:41.04 do you love me, now listen carefully because I don't 00:12:41.98\00:12:45.32 want you to miss this, the word Jesus uses for love 00:12:45.35\00:12:47.82 is Agapao, it's a verb form from the word Agape 00:12:47.85\00:12:50.94 it's a highest form of love, it's love based on 00:12:51.53\00:12:54.04 intelligence, love based on reasoning, comprehension 00:12:54.07\00:12:56.29 coupled with a corresponding purpose, it's a love that 00:12:56.32\00:12:59.33 does not change no matter what's going on at the time, 00:12:59.36\00:13:01.67 it is unaffected by situations and circumstances, 00:13:01.70\00:13:04.51 it's a supreme love, it's the same word that used in 00:13:04.54\00:13:07.14 John 3:16 which says for God's who love the world. 00:13:07.17\00:13:10.02 So, Jesus asks Peter, Peter do you love me with a 00:13:10.76\00:13:13.44 highest form of love more than these as you wants 00:13:13.47\00:13:15.89 so boldly claim that you did and Simon replies 00:13:15.92\00:13:19.53 yes Lord I am fond of you, instead of the word 00:13:19.56\00:13:24.79 Agape Peter uses Phileo instead it's the Greek word 00:13:24.82\00:13:28.51 for love that, that means fondness, affection, it's 00:13:28.54\00:13:32.48 a love that needs something return to actually keep 00:13:32.51\00:13:34.88 on going into exist or else with us and it's a totally 00:13:34.91\00:13:38.33 different word than Agape and these two words never 00:13:38.36\00:13:41.19 ever equal or equal in their meaning and this is a new 00:13:41.42\00:13:44.90 ones that is usually lost in most translations 00:13:44.93\00:13:47.47 and interpretations, Peter replies to Jesus 00:13:47.50\00:13:52.92 I am fond of you Lord, I have deep affection for you. 00:13:52.95\00:13:55.54 Now, if Jesus would have been like you and me 00:13:57.05\00:13:58.54 you know what he might have said just as I 00:13:58.57\00:14:01.61 thought you haven't changed at all, you are the same 00:14:01.64\00:14:04.11 old Peter, trader there is the door use it, 00:14:04.14\00:14:09.85 but Jesus isn't like us, halleluiah for that he is not 00:14:12.39\00:14:15.25 like you and he is not like me and that's good news. 00:14:15.28\00:14:18.07 He says to Peter it's okay feed my lambs then Jesus 00:14:19.16\00:14:24.61 asks him a second time in John 21 verse 16 00:14:24.64\00:14:27.93 He said to him again a second time, Simon, 00:14:29.28\00:14:31.42 son of John, do you love Me? He said to him, yes, 00:14:31.45\00:14:34.30 Lord, you know that I love you, he said to him 00:14:34.33\00:14:38.56 tend my sheep. What's missing this time, 00:14:38.59\00:14:42.11 what's missing in this question, the phrase do you 00:14:43.88\00:14:48.65 love me more than these, it's gone Jesus took it out. 00:14:48.68\00:14:52.49 Jesus removes a peer pressure of comparison 00:14:54.03\00:14:56.29 and says okay Simon forget the other people and the top 00:14:56.32\00:14:59.91 five priorities of your life, where do I fit in, 00:14:59.94\00:15:02.50 do you love me with the supreme kind of love in your 00:15:03.39\00:15:05.97 life am I near the top and again Peter answers 00:15:06.00\00:15:11.12 yes Lord I am fond, I am fond of you, Peter says 00:15:11.75\00:15:19.15 Jesus you are admonishing, you know everything, 00:15:19.18\00:15:21.58 you can read my heart, you can examine my soul, 00:15:21.61\00:15:23.79 you know beyond the shadow of any doubt that yes 00:15:23.82\00:15:26.48 I am telling the truth I am fond of you. 00:15:26.51\00:15:30.31 Jesus says okay Peter that's alright, that's an honest 00:15:31.58\00:15:34.23 answer and I can deal with it, feed my sheep. 00:15:34.26\00:15:38.19 Then Jesus asks Peter a third time, three times 00:15:39.87\00:15:42.46 Peter had denied Jesus three times he must confess 00:15:42.49\00:15:44.95 his love for him and Jesus asks in John 21 verse 17 00:15:44.98\00:15:48.66 he said to him the third time, Simon son of John, 00:15:49.86\00:15:52.51 do you love me, Peter was grieved because he had said 00:15:52.54\00:15:54.90 to him the third time do you love me and he said to him 00:15:54.93\00:15:57.29 Lord you know all things you know that I love you, 00:15:57.32\00:16:00.60 Jesus said to him feed my sheep. Why do think 00:16:01.06\00:16:06.13 Peter was so grieved at Christ asking this question 00:16:06.16\00:16:09.17 a third time because this time when Jesus asked him 00:16:09.20\00:16:13.62 if you loved him he use the same word that Peter 00:16:13.86\00:16:16.75 has been using the same Greek construction, he says 00:16:16.78\00:16:20.41 Peter are you only fond of me? Set of Agapao O Jesus 00:16:20.44\00:16:28.27 uses flare oh, Peter's grieved because Jesus is 00:16:28.30\00:16:32.54 questioning the authenticity of his fondness. 00:16:32.57\00:16:35.20 He says yes Lord you know, you absolutely know you 00:16:35.23\00:16:38.44 can take it to the bank that I am fond of you, 00:16:38.47\00:16:41.55 I am affectionate, I am telling you the truth you 00:16:41.58\00:16:43.96 know this because you can read my heart. 00:16:43.99\00:16:46.00 Peter says I wish I could say I love you with the 00:16:47.69\00:16:50.88 Agape kind of love, but I can't, I can't do that right 00:16:50.91\00:16:56.14 now, the best I can do just to say I am fond. 00:16:56.17\00:16:59.81 I once said that I loved you with everything 00:16:59.84\00:17:02.14 that I had never you leave you, I had never deny you, 00:17:02.75\00:17:04.75 I had never depart from you, I want to claim that 00:17:04.78\00:17:06.33 I loved you with the highest form of love, 00:17:06.36\00:17:07.85 but I don't trust myself anymore, I can say that 00:17:08.63\00:17:12.66 because I failed you once, but I know for sure 00:17:12.69\00:17:16.66 that I am fond of you, I am affectionate towards you 00:17:16.91\00:17:19.13 you didn't count on that. Jesus didn't spare 00:17:19.46\00:17:25.17 Peter the pain of going through this and it hurt 00:17:25.20\00:17:28.95 and sometimes it hurts when Jesus takes the masks off. 00:17:29.13\00:17:31.98 When Peter denied Jesus he had denied all common 00:17:32.97\00:17:37.36 affection even for Christ and now Jesus 00:17:37.39\00:17:42.97 he asked the question whether or not that 00:17:43.89\00:17:46.59 affection is in Peter's heart, but Peter 00:17:46.62\00:17:49.30 understands what Jesus is doing because Peter 00:17:49.33\00:17:50.97 was right. Jesus did know that Peter had a heart 00:17:51.00\00:17:53.57 full of affection and fondness for him, but what 00:17:53.60\00:17:56.49 Jesus was doing in front of the other disciples 00:17:56.52\00:17:59.39 he was confirming and affirming that yes indeed 00:18:00.44\00:18:03.82 Peter had a heart for Christ and they needed to see 00:18:03.85\00:18:07.34 that, they needed to see Jesus forgiving Peter, 00:18:07.37\00:18:09.84 they needed to see Jesus restoring him, they needed 00:18:09.87\00:18:12.32 to see Jesus giving Peter a second chance publicly. 00:18:12.35\00:18:14.95 Before Peter's fall he was rash and he was always 00:18:16.13\00:18:18.36 speaking his mind and speaking out to turn, he was 00:18:18.39\00:18:20.82 impulsive from moment to moment. He was always 00:18:20.85\00:18:23.42 ready to correct others and ready to speak without 00:18:23.45\00:18:26.01 thinking, but this Peter the post-denial Peter 00:18:26.04\00:18:31.48 this was a very different man in grace was regulating 00:18:33.07\00:18:37.07 his zeal now and the disciples could see that 00:18:37.10\00:18:39.69 there was a decided change in his heart. 00:18:39.72\00:18:42.17 Three times over charcoal fire Peter denied Jesus, 00:18:43.23\00:18:46.19 three times he had failed and now three times 00:18:46.22\00:18:48.59 over another charcoal fire he confessed his undying 00:18:48.62\00:18:51.48 love for Jesus. This is Peter Story, but the fact 00:18:51.51\00:18:55.57 is it's everyone story, it's your story and it's my 00:18:55.60\00:18:58.59 story, it's a story of anyone, who has ever 00:18:58.62\00:19:00.62 stood by the fire and fail God. Jesus is saying to 00:19:00.65\00:19:04.75 us right now like he did to Peter, he is asking 00:19:04.78\00:19:06.79 he is saying whoever you are and whatever you have done 00:19:06.82\00:19:08.80 get back into the game, you are still called, 00:19:09.02\00:19:12.76 you still chosen, you've still being commissioned by 00:19:12.79\00:19:16.08 me, get off the bench, get back into the game. 00:19:16.11\00:19:18.61 Jesus comes to you and me right now today and he says 00:19:19.83\00:19:22.23 I am giving you a do over for that situation that you 00:19:22.26\00:19:25.02 can undo I am giving you a do over. Sometimes in life, 00:19:25.05\00:19:28.81 sometimes in our walk with God many times in our 00:19:28.84\00:19:31.66 walk with God, we failed and we do things that we 00:19:31.69\00:19:34.06 cannot undo. There are times when the devil 00:19:34.09\00:19:36.40 would say to you after what you have done we will make 00:19:36.43\00:19:38.26 you think you are qualified to serve God. How can you 00:19:38.29\00:19:41.17 possibly follow him when you know the truth 00:19:41.20\00:19:42.82 about who you are you know that he knows too, 00:19:42.85\00:19:45.18 you are hopeless the devil comes and says to us. 00:19:45.21\00:19:47.67 Well maybe the devil is right, maybe he is right 00:19:48.60\00:19:52.69 about what we did just maybe we did deny Christ 00:19:52.72\00:19:56.84 not just once, but three times, maybe you messed up 00:19:57.36\00:20:01.77 so badly that you lie awaken bed and stare the ceiling 00:20:01.80\00:20:04.80 at night, maybe you are afraid to go asleep because 00:20:04.83\00:20:07.96 you are afraid that those dreams will terrorize you 00:20:07.99\00:20:10.64 and from those dreams you can't just wake up and say 00:20:12.60\00:20:14.61 aha it never happened because you know it happened. 00:20:14.64\00:20:19.06 Words can't be taken back, moments that can't be 00:20:19.74\00:20:22.08 relived, decisions that you can undo they hunt us, 00:20:22.11\00:20:25.58 but Jesus comes to us and he finds us and he says 00:20:25.86\00:20:28.19 would you like it do over, we have had those moments 00:20:28.22\00:20:29.19 would you like it do over, we have had those moments 00:20:29.20\00:20:32.56 where we stood by the fire, it made wrong decisions, 00:20:32.59\00:20:36.42 so how do you deal with failure, how do you deal 00:20:37.32\00:20:39.97 with those moments when you feel like you blown it 00:20:40.00\00:20:43.08 and you blown it for good. Is there something you 00:20:43.11\00:20:45.91 can do overcome failure to deal with failure. 00:20:45.94\00:20:48.15 Well indeed there is first John chapter 1 verse 9 00:20:48.76\00:20:52.93 gives us this promise If we confess our sins, he is 00:20:53.49\00:20:57.98 faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse 00:20:58.01\00:21:01.37 us from all unrighteousness. In addition to first John 1:9 00:21:01.40\00:21:06.57 that wonderful promise of forgiveness that we can 00:21:06.60\00:21:08.52 claim forgiveness even though we don't feel like 00:21:08.55\00:21:10.11 we are forgivable, in addition to that promise 00:21:10.14\00:21:11.89 is this promise in Romans chapter 8 verse 1 00:21:11.92\00:21:14.78 The Bible says there is therefore now no 00:21:15.53\00:21:18.27 condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. 00:21:18.30\00:21:20.59 Jesus tells Peter now you are beginning to see 00:21:22.73\00:21:25.61 why I went to cross in the first place, I went to the 00:21:25.64\00:21:28.51 cross and I arose from the tomb, so I could give 00:21:28.54\00:21:30.44 you Peter, so I could give you a do over, take it Peter 00:21:30.47\00:21:34.79 it's free my gift to you doesn't cost a thing. 00:21:35.48\00:21:41.26 It's the strangest thing about us, we read about 00:21:43.76\00:21:46.43 the cross, we talk about the cross, we sing about the 00:21:46.46\00:21:49.09 cross, but in a moment in times we need it most 00:21:49.12\00:21:52.84 and those moments when we failed and those moments 00:21:52.87\00:21:55.15 that we forget that the cross exists we forget that 00:21:55.18\00:22:00.47 there is a solution to our failure when we need the 00:22:00.50\00:22:03.94 cross most sometimes we forget it, we accept the do 00:22:03.97\00:22:07.55 over that Christ freely offers us and we get back 00:22:07.58\00:22:10.28 into game that's how we deal with failure. Hey, 00:22:10.31\00:22:12.65 we could not accept the forgiveness, we could not 00:22:12.68\00:22:15.25 accept the grace, it's a choice, it's a decision. 00:22:15.28\00:22:18.10 If you wanna deal with failure and overcome it 00:22:19.55\00:22:21.52 you accept the do over that Jesus Christ offers you, 00:22:21.55\00:22:23.65 forgiveness is a choice and Jesus has chosen 00:22:23.68\00:22:26.42 to extend it to you, to offer to you, and now you 00:22:26.66\00:22:29.22 can choose to accept it or to reject it. The thing 00:22:29.25\00:22:32.97 about the cross, the cross is for people who don't 00:22:33.00\00:22:36.86 deserve the cross, so if you don't feel deserving and 00:22:36.89\00:22:39.41 you don't feel worthy then guess what the cross is 00:22:39.44\00:22:42.00 especially for you that's why it's there and Jesus 00:22:42.03\00:22:45.68 is offering you new hope and a new chance and a do over 00:22:45.71\00:22:48.83 today. We hold ourselves back from coming to the cross 00:22:48.86\00:22:53.64 because we think we don't deserve to come to it 00:22:53.67\00:22:55.59 and that's the reason why it's there for people who 00:22:55.62\00:22:57.58 don't deserve it, people like Reyhan, Mary Magdalene, 00:22:57.61\00:23:00.13 people like King David and people like Peter, 00:23:00.16\00:23:02.27 people like you and me we need the cross. 00:23:02.61\00:23:04.78 Forgiveness what a sweet word restoration, 00:23:04.90\00:23:07.46 reconciliation, victory, healing for regrets, healing 00:23:07.49\00:23:11.52 for spiritual scars, healing for fractured hopes, 00:23:11.55\00:23:13.82 forgiveness. Forgiveness is for those who least 00:23:14.00\00:23:18.00 accepted and for the least deserving, so stop feeling 00:23:18.03\00:23:21.16 irredeemable because of your failures, stop feeling 00:23:21.19\00:23:23.78 that you have been disqualified to lead, 00:23:23.81\00:23:25.53 stop feeling that Jesus Christ is disappointed 00:23:26.04\00:23:28.05 in you and the God is only letting you in his family 00:23:28.08\00:23:30.50 because of a technicality, stop feeling like your 00:23:30.53\00:23:33.22 liability to Christ and to his cause. Jesus is saying 00:23:33.25\00:23:36.98 to you right now, I forgive you now get back 00:23:37.01\00:23:39.09 into the game, it's okay, it's alright you may, 00:23:39.12\00:23:44.30 you may have comprised your integrity, you may have 00:23:44.33\00:23:46.93 comprised your credibility, but Peter comprised both 00:23:46.96\00:23:50.01 his credibility and integrity, he betrayed 00:23:50.04\00:23:52.12 his Lord, he committed in a very real way spiritual 00:23:52.15\00:23:55.16 adultery and idolatry because he chose self over Christ, 00:23:55.19\00:23:57.90 but Jesus had the desire and the ability to restore 00:23:57.93\00:24:00.92 Peter to his rightful place as a son of God. 00:24:00.95\00:24:03.28 Sons and daughters of God, children of God are there 00:24:03.76\00:24:06.02 anymore beautiful words than these because if they are 00:24:06.05\00:24:09.47 I haven't found them. Peter dealt with his failure 00:24:09.50\00:24:12.77 through repentance, through confession and through 00:24:12.80\00:24:15.74 victory. Repentance, confession, and victory 00:24:15.77\00:24:18.13 restored Peter. You see Jesus loved Peter 00:24:18.16\00:24:20.40 just as he was and he met him there, but he loved him 00:24:20.51\00:24:23.19 too much to leave him there. Jesus loves you, 00:24:23.22\00:24:27.35 and he meets you where you are, but he loves you 00:24:27.38\00:24:29.24 too much to leave you there. Jesus Christ comes 00:24:29.27\00:24:31.55 to your life and he offers you a do over, a do over 00:24:31.58\00:24:33.80 that will lead to complete restoration. A do over that 00:24:33.83\00:24:37.05 will do it with all the failure that can be for, 00:24:37.08\00:24:39.11 he doesn't leave you in your failure, he leads you 00:24:39.14\00:24:41.34 unto victory and greater victory. We here Christ say 00:24:41.37\00:24:44.72 take a do over. Truth is if we could read each others 00:24:44.75\00:24:47.37 minds, forgive each others hearts to see all that we 00:24:47.40\00:24:50.18 have said and done and thought the past year, 00:24:50.21\00:24:51.90 we would loss creditability with each other instantly. 00:24:51.93\00:24:54.50 But Jesus Christ who knows us completely, who knows us, 00:24:54.53\00:24:56.73 where we have been, where we were going, 00:24:56.76\00:24:57.92 he comes to us and he sees our faults and our failures 00:24:58.31\00:25:00.54 and we can't fool him and he says take a do over, 00:25:00.57\00:25:02.45 get back into the game, if anybody should turn 00:25:02.48\00:25:04.65 his back on us he should be the one who knows the most 00:25:04.68\00:25:06.62 about us which is Jesus, but he doesn't he still 00:25:06.65\00:25:08.94 comes and he saves and he redeems and restores. 00:25:08.97\00:25:11.43 Warren Bennis writes about a promising junior executive 00:25:14.92\00:25:18.85 at IBM.
