is a vacuum, a chasm, a need

and a longing that only God
can fill. Jesus can satisfy that

longing anything else
can only pacify, let us pray.

much vacuum, a big vacuum,

the heart of every individual,

child, it's in the
mind of a man, a woman,

adult, and child, male and
female, there is a longing,

a thirst that only Jesus
can satisfy. Nothing else can

satisfy. I want to
share with you a story in the

scriptures. His name
was Zacchaeus, he lived and

worked in the city of
Jericho and he was the
00:02:57.20\00:03:02.03
chief tax collector. The
Jews hated him, even though
00:03:02.06\00:03:07.71
he was a Jew, he was a
religious outcast. In fact,
00:03:07.74\00:03:14.47
he was a social outcast
also when you come to the
00:03:14.50\00:03:20.67
Jewish community and was
probably disfellowshipped
00:03:20.70\00:03:24.71
from the synagogues.
The Bible tells us that

Zacchaeus was a rich man
and he became rich through
00:03:28.80\00:03:33.56
extortion, through
corruption and although
00:03:33.59\00:03:38.33
he had money he was
not joyful, something was
00:03:38.36\00:03:43.66
missing in him, something
he needed, some need that
00:03:43.69\00:03:48.25
had not been met. People
in his profession had the
00:03:48.28\00:03:52.60
reputation of collecting
more, more money in taxes
00:03:52.63\00:03:57.17
then they were supposed
to. People in his profession
00:03:57.20\00:04:01.45
were viewed as cooperating
with the Roman occupational
00:04:01.48\00:04:05.69
government to suppress,
to oppress the Jewish nation.

He was a symbol of the
Roman occupation, oppression,

and domination, and
among the Jews, Zacchaeus was

viewed as a traitor. He
was viewed as a snitch. He was

viewed as a friend of
the enemy, Rome. I do believe

he wanted to go to the
synagogues, but he could

not summon the courage to
do so. Maybe because of the

attitude he received,
maybe because of the judgment he

received from the people
who were in church. People
00:04:44.50\00:04:51.63
from all walks of life
came to John the Baptist, they

came and heard him preach
and teach about the Messiah,

about a new dispensation,
they came and heard him

talk, they came and
heard him preach, and they were

baptized. They were
baptized into the baptism of

repentance and the Bible
tells us in Luke chapter 3,

that then the tax collectors
also came to be baptized, and

said to him, "Teacher,
what shall we do?" And he said

to them, "Collect no more
than what is appointed for

you." Likewise the
soldiers asked him, saying, "And

what shall we do?" So,
he said to them, "Do not

intimidate anyone or
accuse falsely, and be content

heard John the Baptist,

all these things and it
was going on in his mind,

was going on in his mind and

Zacchaeus was aware that
Jesus had invited Matthew,

a fellow tax collector to
be one of his disciples. He

had heard that Jesus was
a friend to everyone. He did

not condemn them to
the extent where he did not

them. Yes, Jesus did not

condemn all the Sadducees
and Pharisees and everybody

with him. He heard and he saw,

he knew what Jesus had
done, he loved everyone

and had his ministry

that first verse he says
And he sought to see Jesus, who

Jesus was, but could not
because of the crowd, for he

was short stature. Let's
get the picture clear here,

Zacchaeus wanted to see
Jesus. He had longed to see

this man, no doubt he
must have heard from, it must

have been a talk in the
tax collection agency, Matthew

what Matthew was now
doing? Matthew may have

about his master Jesus,

the desire for Zacchaeus to

see Jesus and then one
day it was heard, he received

a good news that Jesus was
on his way to Jericho and he

wanted to see Jesus, the
Bible says, he was a man,

a short man, couldn't fight
and wrestle with the crowd,

he was lost in the
crowd, so he decided to respect

himself and climb on a
tree, lets get a picture here,

this was a city chief
tax collector, a social and

religious outcast
climbing a tree to see a Rabbi,

Zacchaeus had a need and
this great need pushed him

to do what a lot of
people thought was unthinkable,

all that would depreciate
his integrity and his ego

but Zacchaeus climbed
a sycamore tree to get a

look at the man whose
teachings he had securely

love and secretly loved
and had admired, Zacchaeus had

a thirst, money, his
money could not buy, or his

Zacchaeus had a need that

he knew that Jesus
could only satisfy, so in his

environment Zacchaeus knew

that his money, his
fame, his possession could not

that he wanted done, he knew

not satisfy that need and

had, if it meant climbing the

it. He gave up, he give up,

standing between him and

who deceive themselves by

they cannot get something that

know something is lacking.

until we are drunk cannot

pacify, smoking pot, my

sisters, smoking pot can only

hallucinate and pacify,
but it cannot satisfy, spending

money till you drop dead
or till the shops close cannot

only pacify, traveling around

the world and making
all kinds of influences can

and will not satisfy, eating

of the spirit, it can only

Lord Jesus Christ as the

Zacchaeus in his hostile

this and he did not mind his

and it says that when Jesus

he was going down the road

up and saw him, and said to

him, "Zacchaeus, make
haste and come down, for today I

must stay at home, I must
stay at your house." So he

made haste and came down,
and received him joyfully.

trying to find fault
with what Jesus was doing as

congregation, as we will find in

any group, people who are there
to look for fault and who will

find all the negative things
to talk about and to say, that

was the kind of crowd Jesus
was in. And the Bible tells

us as he was walking,
as they were walking and

suddenly hush.
Jesus stopped, looked up,

eyes around him went up,

Today, make haste, right away

man who is a sinner."

and said to the Lord, "Look,

goods to the poor and if

I have taken anything from
anyone by false accusation,

they are, religious leaders,

upset, complaining about the

decision Jesus had
made. They questioned his

decision to socialize
with someone they consider a

publicly perceived
sinner. Jesus did not fit into

into their little box of

righteousness and I'll
define expectations of a

righteous leader, they
complained, the Bible says

they left. I'd
supposed the party was over, no

more following Jesus,
Jesus lost some church,

I will say some cheerers
that day because he paid

attention to someone who
had been neglected for so

was seeking to be a better

was desiring a deeper

relationship with God.
The religious leaders left the

son of God, left
the Messiah, left their

religious leader
because he had reached out to

someone. The second
point is that because of their

prejudice, I suppose
they did not even see the

changes that had
taken place in Zacchaeus.

The passage says that
Zacchaeus was giving back,

he was given half of
the goods he has stolen, he

has forcibly accused people
and extorted from them, he

I wonder, how come nobody

were going on in the life

believe that Jesus wanted to

highlight the fact
that this man was thirsting,

deeper relationship with him,

this man wanted something

a better person in his life,

could it be that they were
blinded, that those who left

by their own prejudices,

perceptions against
tax collectors, they had

life of Zacchaeus and I wonder

how many people who
walk through the doors of our

churches today or who
come to our homes or those who

are with us at places of
work, where people who are

hurting, people who
are desiring a deeper

relationship, but do not
have a way to communicate.

Who is the tax collector
in our lives, who do you

represent and who do
you resent, who do you not

consider as a tax collector
